Karl Marx as a Religious Type · 1 of 2

The subject of this essay may cause puzzlement and therefore requires some explanation. It is my conviction that the defining force in a person's spiritual life is his religion—not only in the narrow sense, but in the broad sense of the word, that is, those highest and ultimate values which a person acknowledges as standing over and above himself, and the practical relationship in which he stands toward these values. To determine the actual religious center in a person, to find his authentic spiritual core—this means to learn the most intimate and important thing about him, after which all that is external and derivative becomes understandable. In this sense, one can speak of the religion of every person, equally of the religiously naive and of the one who consciously denies every definite form of religiosity. For the Christian understanding of life and history, it is moreover certain that real mystical principles possess the human soul and move history, and these principles are at war with one another—polar, irreconcilable. In this sense, religiously neutral people, strictly speaking, do not even exist; in fact, even in their souls the struggle between Christ and "the prince of this world" takes place. We know that there can be people who do not know Christ yet serve Him and do His will, and conversely, those who call themselves Christians but are in truth alien to Him; finally, even among deniers and religious hypocrites there are those who in spirit herald the coming impostor who shall come "in his own name" and find many followers. Whose spirit possesses this or that historical figure, whose "seal" lies upon this or that historical movement—such is the customary question one must ask when reflecting on the complex phenomena of life as it grows ever more complex. And it happens especially often that one must think and rethink this question as it bears on so complex, contradictory, and at the same time significant a current in the spiritual life of modern times as socialism, understood precisely as a manifestation of spiritual life, because the economic content of socialism's demands may not arouse disputes or doubts on matters of principle. The very historical flesh of socialism, that is, the socialist movement, can be animated by different spirits and belong to the kingdom of light or become the prey of darkness. A mysterious boundary separates light and darkness, which coexist intermingled and yet cannot merge with one another.

And in reflecting on the religious nature of modern socialism, one's thought involuntarily dwells on the man whose spirit impressed such a deep seal upon the socialist movement of modern times that he must be numbered among its spiritual fathers—on Karl Marx. Who is he? What is he in his religious nature? What god did he serve with his life? What love and what hatred kindled the soul of this man?

To give as definite and final an answer as possible to this fundamental and decisive question of Marxism was also a personal need for the author, who for several years was under the strong influence of Marx, who gave himself entirely to assimilating and developing his ideas, and who then freed himself with such difficulty and pain from the hypnosis of that influence. One wants to tie up loose ends, to check oneself one last time, and, leaving the old dwelling forever, to survey with a cool, critical gaze the object of one's passionate youthful fascination.

The reader, of course, does not expect to receive a trite and simplistic answer to the question posed, one capable of satisfying perhaps only zealous novice Marxists—namely, that Marx's soul was entirely woven of socialist feelings, that he loved and pitied the oppressed workers, hated the capitalist oppressors, and moreover believed wholeheartedly in the coming of the bright kingdom of socialism.

If all this were so simple, there would of course be nothing to talk about. However, it is both so and at the same time not entirely so; in any case, it is immeasurably more complex and intricate. And first of all, regarding Marx's personal psychology, as I perceive it, it seems to me rather doubtful that feelings such as love, immediate compassion, or in general a warm sympathy for human suffering played such a truly preeminent role in his spiritual life. Not for nothing did even his father, during Marx's student years, drop in a letter to him the phrase: "Does your heart correspond to your head, to your talents?" And so he too paused in doubt before this question. Unfortunately, in characterizing Marx's personality and the history of his life, we are faced with an almost complete absence of any documentary material. Almost equally absent are characterizations of his personality by a perceptive and competent observer that do not aim at producing a Social-Democratic "hagiography" at all costs (as the memoirs of Lafargue and Liebknecht do). Therefore in characterizing Marx there inevitably remains room for subjectivism. Judging by Marx's printed works, his soul was in general far more open to the elemental forces of anger, hatred, and vindictiveness than to the opposite feelings—true, sometimes holy anger, but often quite unholy. Marx deserves every sympathy and respect when he hurls thunderbolts at the cruelty of capitalists and capitalism, at the heartlessness of the present social order, but the impression is somewhat different when, alongside these thunderbolts, one encounters arrogant and malicious attacks against those who disagree, whoever they may be—Lassalle or McCulloch, Herzen or Malthus, Proudhon or Senior. Marx was drawn into personal polemic with extraordinary ease, and one must confess that this polemic is in general very unattractive, however much people try to deny it. Marx wrote three entire polemical books (to say nothing of minor pieces), and these works are now painful to read, and not only because polemic in general excites greater interest among writers than among readers. One of these books is directed against Vogt and is full of émigré squabbles and mutual accusations of the most unworthy conduct, particularly espionage; the second book is against Marx's former friend Bruno Bauer, whose dismissal from the University of Berlin supposedly caused Marx to abandon the idea of a professorship—it is full of mockery and for some reason was gratuitously given a blasphemous title ("The Holy Family"); finally, the third is the best known and most valuable book against Proudhon, though its tone also accords neither with the subject nor with Marx's recent relations with Proudhon. And how many of these polemical beauties, which were difficult to tolerate even during the period of greatest fascination with Marx, are found in the bibliographical notes of Volume I of Capital, how much firing of cannons at sparrows, unnecessary sarcasm, and even outright rudeness (how else can one describe, for example, the note about Malthus and the Protestant clergy and their excessive childbearing, pp. 516–518 of the Russian translation, ed. Struve). The recollections of some contemporary outsiders from neutral circles, consistent with this immediate impression, depict Marx as a self-assured, domineering character, intolerant of objections (one need recall Marx's struggle with Bakunin in the International and in general the history of its dissolution). It is well known what a sharp characterization of Marx, based on a number of verified facts, Herzen gives, though he did not personally know Marx. (In the new, legally published edition of Herzen's works, see Volume III, My Past and Thoughts, chapter: "The Germans in Emigration." Herzen recounts here how Marx accused Bakunin of espionage when the latter was sitting in prison and could not defend himself, as well as a number of attempts to cast a shadow of accusation on Herzen himself, whom Marx did not even know personally.) "Democratic dictator"—thus Annenkov defines Marx (in his well-known memoirs). And this definition seems to us to express correctly the general impression of Marx, of that impatient and imperious self-assertion which permeates everything bearing the imprint of his personality.

A characteristic feature of people with dictatorial natures is their blunt and rather unceremonious attitude toward human individuality; people become for them, as it were, algebraic signs, destined to serve as a means for one or another, even very lofty, purpose, or as an object for more or less energetic, even if most benevolent, influence. In the realm of theory, this trait will express itself in a lack of attention to the concrete, living human personality, in other words, in ignoring the problem of individuality. This theoretical ignoring of personality, the elimination of the problem of the individual under the pretext of a sociological interpretation of history, is extraordinarily characteristic of Marx as well. For him the problem of individuality, of the absolutely irreducible core of the human personality, of its integral nature, does not exist. Marx the thinker, involuntarily submitting here to Marx the man, dissolved individuality in sociology completely—that is, not only what in it is truly soluble, but also what is entirely insoluble—and this trait of his, among other things, facilitated the construction of bold and generalizing conceptions of the "economic interpretation of history," where a funeral song is sung over personality and personal creativity in general. Marx was not troubled by the revolt of Stirner, his contemporary, nor did it make even a noticeable impression on him, although Marx's teacher Feuerbach had suffered so severely at Stirner's hands; he safely passed by, also without any visible consequences for himself, the mighty ethical individualism of Kant and Fichte, whose spirit suffused the very air of Germany in the 1830s (as one feels this influence even in Lassalle!). Still less could Marx have envisaged the corrosive criticism of Dostoevsky's "underground man," who among other rights defends the natural right to... stupidity and caprice, if only to "live by one's own stupid will." In him there was not the slightest premonition of the rebellious individualism of the Nietzsche yet to come, when he was lacing life and history into a rib-breaking sociological corset. In Marx's eyes, people fall into sociological groups, and these groups decorously form regular geometric figures in accordance with laws, as if nothing occurs in history besides this measured movement of sociological elements—and this dismissal of the problem of personality and of any concern for it, this excessive abstractness, is the fundamental trait of Marxism, and it so suits the strong-willed, imperious temperament of the creator of this system.

In the memoirs of Marx's daughter (Eleanor) it is reported that Marx loved Shakespeare's poetry and often reread him. We cannot, of course, question the accuracy of this testimony—all sorts of whims of taste are possible—however, seeking traces of this fascination and of Shakespeare's tangible influence on Marx in the latter's writings, we must say that none is to be found at all. And this is not surprising, because one simply cannot imagine an element more alien and opposite to all of Marxism than the world of Shakespeare's poetry, in which the tragedy of the individual soul and its inscrutable destiny are central. Indeed, it seems that almost the only trace we find in Marx of Shakespeare is a quotation from Timon of Athens about gold and then the mention of Shylock, no less fitting for an economic treatise—but it is precisely the external character of these references that only confirms our thought that Marx has no inner contact with Shakespeare, and the music of their souls does not merge into one at all but produces a monstrous dissonance. Marx, despite his stormy life, is one of those people alien to all tragedy, inwardly calm, least akin to the tormented soul of Shakespeare.

The fundamental trait of Marx's personality and worldview that we have indicated—his ignoring of the problem of the individual and the concrete—largely predetermines his overall religious character and his relative insensitivity to the acuteness of the religious problem, for this is above all a problem of the individual. It is a question of the value of my life, my personality, my sufferings, of the relation to God of the individual human soul, of its personal, and not merely sociological, salvation. That unique, irreplaceable, absolutely unrepeatable personality, which flashed through history only once, for a brief moment, lays claim to eternity, to absoluteness, to enduring significance, which only religion can promise—the living "God of the living" of religion, and not the dead god of the dead of sociology. And it is precisely this problem, insoluble apart from religion and outside of religion, indeed incapable even of being accommodated without it, that gives religious consciousness, religious doubt, and religious experience in general such acuteness, burning intensity, and torment. Here, if you will, is individualistic egoism, but of a higher order—not empirical self-love, but the highest spiritual thirst, that highest affirmation of the I, that holy egoism which commands one to lose one's soul in order to save it, to lose the empirical, perishable, and tangible in order to save the spiritual, invisible, and imperishable. And this—not a problem but a torment of individuality, this riddle of man and humanity, of what in them is the only real and enduring, of the living soul—accompanies thought through all its twists and turns and does not allow a person to fall asleep in religious matters; from it, as from the seed of a plant, religious teachings and philosophical systems grow—and is not this need and capacity for "seeking the things above" clear testimony to man's otherworldly origin!

As we have said, Marx remains scarcely receptive to the religious problem; the fate of individuality does not trouble him; he is entirely absorbed in what is common to all individualities, consequently in the non-individual within them, and this non-individual, though not extra-individual, he generalizes into an abstract formula, relatively easily discarding what remains in personality after subtracting this non-individual element from it, or with a calm heart equating this remainder to zero. This is precisely what constitutes the notorious "objectivism" in Marxism: personalities are extinguished in social categories, just as the personality of a soldier is extinguished by the regiment and company in which he serves. Vl. Solovyov once said of Chicherin that his was above all a "directive" mind, that is, in the true sense of the word a doctrinaire mind—and it was precisely such a directive mind that Marx possessed. Therefore the true fragrance of religion remains inaccessible to his spiritual sense of smell, and his atheism remains so calm, untragic, doctrinaire. It never occurs to him that the sociological salvation of humanity, the prospect of the socialist Zukunftsstaat, may prove insufficient for the salvation of man and cannot replace the hope of religious salvation. The torments of Ivan Karamazov about the hopelessness of historical tragedy are incomprehensible and alien to him—his questions, dangerous to faith in the sociological salvation of humanity, about the price of historical progress, about the cost of future harmony, about the "little tear of a child." For the resolution of all questions Marx recommends one universal remedy—the "practice" of life (die Praxis); it is enough to deafen oneself with the din and noise of the street, and there, in that din, in the cares of the day, one will find a way out of all doubts. This invitation to cure philosophical and religious doubts with the "practice" of life, in which one has no time to breathe or think, as an escape precisely from these doubts (and not for the sake of some special independent value of this "practice," which I do not intend to deny or diminish)—this seems to me something equivalent to an invitation to drink oneself into insensibility and thus also become insensitive to one's spiritual pain. The invitation to wallow in the "thick of life," which has recently become the last word of street philosophy and a recipe for resolving all philosophical questions and doubts, also plays in Marx the role of the ultima ratio of philosophy, though not, of course, in such a naked and vulgar form. "Philosophers have sufficiently interpreted the world; the time has come to set about its practical transformation"—this is Marx's motto, not only practical but also philosophical.

Although Marx was insensitive to the religious problem, this does not at all make him indifferent to the fact of religiosity and the existence of religion. On the contrary, inner alienation, as often happens, evokes not indifferentism but outright hostility toward this alien and incomprehensible world, and this was precisely Marx's attitude toward religion. Marx regards religion, especially theism and Christianity, with fierce hostility, as a militant and combative atheist striving to free and cure people of religious madness, of spiritual slavery. In Marx's militant atheism we see the central nerve of all his activity, one of its main stimuli; the struggle with religion is in a certain sense, as will become clear in the further exposition, the true, though hidden, practical motive even of his most important purely theoretical works. Marx fights the God of religion with his science and with his socialism, which in his hands becomes an instrument of atheism, a weapon for liberating humanity from religion. Humanity's striving "to make a life for itself without God, and do so forever and once and for all," about which Dostoevsky wrote so prophetically and penetratingly, and which was the subject of his constant and agonizing thoughts, found one of its most vivid and complete expressions in Marx's doctrine. This inner connection between atheism and socialism in Marx, this authentic soul of his activity, is usually either not understood or not noticed, because in general little interest is taken in this side of him, and in order to show this as clearly as possible, one must turn to the history of his spiritual development.

What, properly speaking, was Marx's general philosophical worldview, and to what extent is it appropriate to speak of one at all? On this score an entire legend has been created, which states that Marx took his philosophical starting point from Hegel and was initially under his defining influence, was therefore in a certain sense also a Hegelian and belonged to the Hegelian "Left." Both Marx himself and Engels, apparently, were inclined to understand their philosophical genealogy in this way in later times. At least, that flattering self-characterization is well known which Engels gave in 1891 to German socialism, that is, Marxism (as Engels uses them, these are, of course, synonyms), in an inscription on his portrait: "We German socialists are proud that we descend not only from Saint-Simon, Fourier, and Owen, but from Kant, Fichte, and Hegel." Here a direct continuity between classical German idealism and Marxism is established, and the recognition of such a connection has become a commonplace of socio-philosophical literature.

Although biographical materials concerning Marx's youth are lacking, the clarification of the question about the actual course of Marx's philosophical development is now facilitated at least by the fact that through Mehring's labors we have a complete edition of Marx's older, hard-to-access writings, especially valuable because they belong to his early years and to the time when he had not yet become a Marxist, though he was already standing on his own feet, but had not yet worked out his own doctrine. And so, surveying Marx's literary and scholarly work in its entirety, from his philosophical dissertation on Democritus and Epicurus to the last volume of Capital, we arrive at a conclusion rather sharply diverging from the generally accepted one: no continuity between classical German idealism and Marxism exists; the latter grew on the soil of the final decomposition of idealism, consequently only as one of the products of this decomposition. If some connection, however weak, between socialism and idealism still existed in Lassalle, it was definitively severed precisely as a result of Marx's influence. The summit of German idealism ended in a sheer cliff. There occurred, shortly after Hegel's death, an unprecedented philosophical catastrophe, a complete rupture of philosophical traditions, as if we were returning to the century of the "Enlightenment" (Aufklärung) and to French materialism of the eighteenth century (to which Plekhanov traces the genesis of economic materialism, and this is in any case closer to reality than the opinion about Marx's Hegelianism).

The opinion about the significance of Marxism as the "outcome" or liquidation of classical idealism is refuted, in our view, above all by the fact that Marx himself remained alien to its influence, and although in his student days he made outward concessions to it—in the spiritual atmosphere of the University of Berlin in the late 1830s this was almost inevitable—he soon dispensed even with these. There are no grounds for classifying Marx as belonging to Hegel's "school" in the sense in which representatives of its "Left" wing belong to it—Feuerbach, Bruno Bauer, Strauss, and others. All of them truly grew up in Hegel's spiritual bosom and forever retained discernible traces of that spiritual closeness to him. Nothing similar can be said of Marx. His Hegelianism goes no further than a verbal imitation of the peculiar Hegelian style, which impresses so many, and a few completely incidental quotations from him. But what do we find in Marx that spiritually connects him to Hegel beyond this outward imitation?

First of all, the chapter on the form of value in Volume I of Capital is written "in the manner of Hegel"—to the terror of beginning readers. But Marx himself later confessed that here he was "coquetting" by imitating Hegel, and we will add that he did this completely in vain. Given the general meagerness of the intellectual content of this chapter, which is essentially superfluous for the exposition of the economic system of Capital, this deliberate pomposity is more likely to make one doubt the author's literary taste than to persuade one that the author is spiritually close to Hegel or has a serious knowledge of his philosophy.

They say, further, that the notorious "dialectical method" brings Marx close to Hegel. Marx himself wrote on this subject that "my dialectical method is not only different from Hegel's in its foundation, but constitutes its direct opposite." We hold the opinion, however, that one simply has nothing to do with the other, just as a degree on a thermometer scale does not "constitute the complete opposite" of a degree on a geographical map, but simply has nothing in common with it except the name. The "dialectical method" in Hegel is in fact the dialectical development of concepts, that is, above all it is not a method in the usual sense of the word, or a way of investigating or proving truths, but is the manner of the concept's inner self-unfolding, the very being of this concept existing in motion and moving in contradictions. Marx, however, has no special dialectical method at all of the kind he supposes himself to possess, let alone one different from Hegel's. But if one assumes that he understands it in the sense of one of the logical methods, that is, a way of investigating, of finding scientific truths, then such a method simply does not exist at the disposal of inductive, empirical sciences. What Marx (and after him his school) mistakenly called a method was in fact merely a manner of presenting his conclusions in the form of dialectical contradictions, writing "in the manner of Hegel" (a fondness for antitheses in general characterizes Marx's style). The contradictions of modern economic development are a conclusion drawn from the study of facts, and not at all a deliberately chosen method of such study.

A special "dialectical method" in Marx is in any case a sheer misunderstanding, whether one understands logic in the sense of Mill, that is, the methodology of empirical sciences, or in the sense of Hegel, that is, as metaphysical ontology. That is why the following tirade in the preface to the second edition of Volume I of Capital sounds so strange in Marx's mouth:

"I openly avowed myself a pupil of that mighty thinker, and even here and there in the chapter on the theory of value coquetted with the mode of expression peculiar to him. The mystification which dialectic suffers in Hegel's hands by no means prevents him from being the first to present its general forms of working in a comprehensive and conscious manner. With him it is standing on its head. It must be turned right side up again, if you would discover the rational kernel within the mystical shell."

As the reader sees, Marx declares himself here a pupil of Hegel, but in this one must see either a continuation of the same "coquetry" as in the chapter on value, or outright mockery of Hegel, or simply complete philosophical derangement—and certainly least of all any reverence for the "great thinker." Having declared a "mystification" all that actually made Hegel Hegel, and proposing somehow to "turn his system upside down," Marx at the same time declares himself his pupil and claims to defend his memory and honor against detractors. If one trusts only the immediate impression and, so to speak, purely artistic intuition, one can say that this very tirade in itself is the strongest proof of Marx's complete alienation from Hegel, and after this all further proofs of that alienation become superfluous.

Traces of Hegel's influence on Marx are finally discerned in his evolutionism. However, the idea of evolution in its positivist sense again differs from the dialectic of the concept in Hegel as profoundly as an external succession of events and states, even one governed by laws—an external fact—differs from the unfolding of inner, already given and complete content, which merely reveals itself in a series of successive and internally connected stages and states—an unfolding idea. Despite external resemblance, Hegel's dialectic and evolution in the sense of natural science and positivism represent a complete opposition. Of course, the idea of historical and, in particular, economic evolution could have appeared in Marx under the outward influence of Hegel, but it could also have arisen entirely independently, especially since it was generally in the air, appearing almost simultaneously in Saint-Simon, Comte, Darwin, L. Stein (though under Hegel's influence), and various socialists, both French and German (Lassalle, Rodbertus). Therefore, on the basis of Marx's evolutionism, his intellectual descent from Hegel cannot be established on anything like sufficient grounds.

One can say in general that a gifted student at the University of Berlin in the 1830s, remaining inwardly alien to Hegelianism, could have assimilated even more of its external features than we find in Marx. But internal, more serious signs of closeness not only to Hegel but to classical idealism in general—to Kant, Fichte, Schelling—the indelible marks of this philosophical school, are wholly absent from Marx, to an astonishing degree. It is hard to believe that, having come into contact with the problems and doctrines of classical idealism, one could remain so untouched by them; this can only be explained by an inner repulsion from them, a lack of affinity with these problems, so that one can only wonder why it became necessary to establish a nonexistent historical connection between Marxism and classical idealism. It is especially striking that Marx remained completely alien to any epistemological doubts and critical caution, was not at all touched by the epistemological skepticism and critique of knowledge in Kant, but appears as a pre-critical dogmatist and, like the most naive materialist, puts forward the following thesis as his fundamental position (in the preface to A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy): "It is not the consciousness of men that determines their forms of being, but, on the contrary, their social being that determines the forms of their consciousness." Or another thesis, in the preface to the second edition of Volume I of Capital: "For me the ideal principle is merely the material principle that has passed through the brain (sic!)." It is clear that these obscure and unintelligible propositions, full of such significant terms requiring explanation—being, consciousness, the ideal, the material—could not have come from the pen of a man influenced by Kant, whose critique represents the sole entrance to the edifice of all classical idealism. What continuity can there be in that case!

Marx speaks thus of the general course of his early scholarly studies: "My specialty was jurisprudence, but its study was subordinate to, and proceeded alongside, the study of philosophy and history" (preface to A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy). In later years, according both to Marx's own statements and to the content of his printed works, his studies focused exclusively on political economy (true, Engels, who firmly believed in the universality of Marx's genius, mentions his intention to write both a logic and a history of philosophy, alongside plans for natural-scientific, mathematical, and economic works; however, this statement by his devoted friend, unconfirmed and indeed contradicted by the facts, does not seem to us to rest on anything weightier than passing thoughts or distant dreams). In view of the fact that Marx's most intensive engagement with philosophy can only have occurred in his early years, it is in them that we must seek the key to understanding Marx's actual philosophical character. Unfortunately, we know very little about Marx's student years, but even in those years one cannot establish any significant closeness to Hegel. Marx spent one year at the University of Bonn (judging by his father's letters, with little to show for his studies), and from October 1836 to 1841 was a student in Berlin. The list of courses he attended here over 9 semesters (given by Mehring in his commentary to the edition of Marx's early writings) does not indicate that even then philosophy or history played a primary role: of 12 courses, more than half relate to jurisprudence, only one to philosophy, two to theology (!), one to literature, and not one to history.

Mehring tries to weaken the evidence of this list, which contradicts Marx's later statement about the course of his studies, by arguing that after the invention of the printing press, attending lectures had lost significance altogether. Of course, Carlyle's saying that the best university is books is true, but even now this is not entirely so, and in the 1830s of the last century, especially in the case of the professorial chairs at the University of Berlin, which attracted students from all countries, this was not so at all. And in any case, the choice of lecture subjects, given academic freedom, still testifies to the dominant direction of a student's interests. What did Marx do besides lectures? On this we have only one account, and a very early one—namely, Marx's letter to his father, written at the end of his first year as a student (November 1837). This letter is intended to justify Marx to his father, who reproached Marx for idleness, and contains a long, one might truly say colossal, list of everything read, studied, and written during that year. The general impression of this overly intimate letter is that although it testifies to the outstanding curiosity, diligence, and capacity for work of a 19-year-old student, written as it was in a particular mood, it should not be taken too literally, and indeed this is impossible. It tells of two systems of philosophy of law (one of them 300 sheets!), which the young author composed during that year only to immediately become disillusioned with them, of an entire philosophical dialogue, two dramas, poems for his fiancée (which Marx sent on several occasions), and so on. Moreover, it contains a very long list of books read and studied, for which even a gifted reader would have needed more than a year. Youthful ardor together with youthful self-admiration, great diligence but with a certain lack of focus, are vividly reflected here, but it is precisely this that makes us cautious about this letter—which, by the way, not only failed to calm old Marx but irritated him even more.

In any case, in this letter we see Marx with great aspirations but not yet settled tastes, in a Sturm-und-Drang period. Of Marx's later student years, apart from the list of lectures, we know nothing. In 1841 Marx receives his doctorate for a dissertation on a philosophical theme: "The Difference Between the Philosophy of Nature of Democritus and Epicurus" (published by Mehring). It differs little from the usual type of doctoral dissertations and offers little basis for judging the author's philosophical individuality and general philosophical worldview (we leave the evaluation of the specialized research to specialists in the history of Greek philosophy). Judging by the dedication (to his future father-in-law), Marx appears here as an adherent of "idealism," though it is not clear of what kind. Nor is Hegelianism discernible here (except perhaps in the preface, where Hegel's History of Philosophy is respectfully mentioned). In any case, one can say that those exaggerated expectations which might have arisen on the basis of the youthful letter were not fulfilled here. Marx dreams, however, at this time of a chair in philosophy, but soon abandons this thought in response to his friend Bruno Bauer's dismissal from the university for free-thinking. It seems to us, however, judging by the ease with which he abandoned the prospect of a chair, that the dismissal was rather a pretext, and the cause was undoubtedly his inherent lack of affinity for this kind of activity.

The vagueness of Marx's philosophical outlook, together with his vague, student "idealism," soon disappears, however, and in two or three years Marx emerges in his true character—that materialistic positivist and pupil of Feuerbach, under whose general influence he remained all his life. Marx is a Feuerbachian, who later somewhat modified and supplemented his teacher's doctrine. One cannot understand Marx without placing this fundamental fact at the center of attention. Marx himself never called himself a pupil of Feuerbach, as in fact he was, preferring for some reason to call himself a pupil of Hegel, which he was not. After the 1840s, Feuerbach's name no longer appears in Marx's writings, and Engels mentions him as an enthusiasm of the past and sharply sets himself against him. And yet, using Feuerbach's favorite expression, one must say that Feuerbach is Marx's unspoken secret, the true key to understanding him.

It is easy to understand that, having assimilated Feuerbach's worldview, Marx must have definitively and forever lost all taste for Hegel, even if he ever had any. The importance of Feuerbach's struggle with Hegel is well known, and this struggle is not at all a sign of further development of the system in the hands of a pupil who, though departing from the teacher, continues that same work, but a genuine revolt, a definitive denial of speculative philosophy in general, which was then personified in Hegel, a lapse into the crudest materialism in metaphysics, sensualist positivism in epistemology, hedonism in ethics. Marx assimilated all these traits as well, thereby putting an end to his philosophical past, such as it was. Between classical idealism and Marxism stood Feuerbach, and forever divided them with an impenetrable wall. That is why Marx's unexpected claim in 1873 to be one of Hegel's pupils is some kind of whim, perhaps coquetry, a historical reminiscence—nothing more.

We know that the central place in Feuerbach's philosophy is occupied by the religious problem; its fundamental theme is the denial of the religion of God-manhood in the name of the religion of man-godhood, a God-defying militant atheism. It was precisely this motif that found the greatest resonance in Marx's soul; amid all the abundance and variety of philosophical motifs that sounded in this epoch of the dissolution of Hegelianism into every possible tendency, Marx's ear singled out the religious motif, and specifically the God-defying one.

In 1848 Feuerbach's Das Wesen des Christenthums was published, and this work made such an impression on Marx and Engels (according to the latter's accounts) that both immediately became Feuerbachians. In 1844 Marx, together with Ruge, edits in Paris the journal Deutsch-Französische Jahrbücher, of which, however, only one issue (a double one) appeared. Here Marx published two articles: "Zur Kritik der Hegelschen Rechtsphilosophie" and "Zur Judenfrage," which are of enormous, indeed paramount, importance in characterizing his worldview. In both articles (as in Die Heilige Familie, belonging to the same period) Marx appears as an orthodox Feuerbachian. One can note perhaps only a peculiar nuance in his reception of Feuerbach's teaching on religion, which has, so to speak, two fronts. Feuerbach not only criticizes Christianity and all theism but at the same time preaches an atheistic religion of humanity, wants to be the prophet of this new religion, and even displays a peculiar "piety" in this role, which Stirner so mercilessly ridicules in him. This very "piety" of Feuerbach, his touching desire to bow before the sacred, even if it be the crudest logical idol, is completely alien to Marx's soul. He takes only one side of Feuerbach's teaching—the critical one—and turns the edge of his criticism against all religion, probably making no exception in this regard even for his teacher's religion. He strives for the complete and final abolition of religion, for pure atheism, in which no sun shines any longer either in heaven or on earth. But let us instead allow Marx himself to speak.

The article "Toward a Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right" begins with the following decisive statement:

"For Germany the criticism of religion is in the main complete (!!), and the criticism of religion is the prerequisite of all criticism. The foundation of irreligious criticism is this: man makes religion, religion does not make man. Religion is indeed the self-consciousness and sense of self of man who has either not yet found himself or has already lost himself again. But man is no abstract being standing outside the world. Man is the world of man—state, society. This state and this society produce religion, which is an inverted consciousness of the world, because they are an inverted world. Religion is the general theory of this world, its encyclopedic compendium, its logic in popular form, its spiritualistic point d'honneur, its enthusiasm, its moral sanction, its solemn complement, its universal ground of consolation and justification. It is the fantastic realization of the human essence (Wesen—Feuerbach's usual term), since the human essence possesses no true reality. The struggle against religion is therefore indirectly the struggle against that world whose spiritual aroma is religion. Religious distress (Elend) is in some people the expression of real distress, and in others a protest against real distress. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the sentiment of a heartless (herzlosen) world, and also the spirit of a soulless age. It is opium for the people.

The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is the demand for their real happiness. The demand to eliminate illusions about one's existence is the demand to eliminate a condition that requires illusions. Thus the criticism of illusions is, in essence, the criticism of the vale of sorrow in which religion is a phantom of holiness. Criticism has plucked the imaginary flowers from the chains, not so that man would bear chains devoid of fantasy and consolation, but so that he would throw off the chains and begin to pluck living flowers. The criticism of religion disillusions man, so that he may think and act, determining the reality around him as a disillusioned man who has come to his senses, so that he may revolve around himself and consequently around his real sun."

All this is an exposition of Feuerbach's fundamental propositions, set out almost in his own words. But in Marx the practical, revolutionary application of this "critique of religion" is expressed much more vividly.

"The critique of heaven," he says, "turns into the critique of the earth, the critique of religion into the critique of law, the critique of theology into the critique of politics... The weapon of criticism cannot, of course, replace criticism by weapons; material force must be overthrown by material force; but theory also becomes a material force as soon as it has gripped the masses. Theory is capable of gripping the masses if it is capable of demonstrating ad hominem, and it is capable of demonstrating ad hominem if it is radical. To be radical is to grasp the root of the matter. But for man the root is man himself. The obvious proof of the radicalism of German theory, and hence of its practical energy, is its adoption of the decisive, positive abolition of religion as its starting point (Ausgang). The critique of religion ends with the teaching that man is the highest being for man, and consequently, through a categorical imperative, overturns all conditions in which man is a humiliated, shackled, abandoned, despised being."

At the close of this article one hears the "music of the future," the fundamental motif of Marx's sociological doctrine: "The only practically possible liberation of Germany is liberation from the standpoint of the theory which proclaims that man is the highest being for man (i.e., Feuerbach's teaching!—Author). The emancipation of the German is the emancipation of man. The head of this emancipation is philosophy, its heart is the proletariat. Philosophy cannot be realized without the abolition (Aufhebung) of the proletariat; the proletariat cannot abolish itself without the realization of philosophy." The work of philosophy, that is, Feuerbach's teaching—namely the theoretical liberation of humanity from religion—and the work of the proletariat are here united into one whole—the proletariat is entrusted with the mission of carrying out in history the work of atheism, that is, the practical liberation of man from religion. Here is the genuine Marx, here the true "secret" of Marxism is revealed, its true essence!

This passage is usually quoted to confirm the supposed connection between Marxism and classical philosophy, which Engels too sought to establish. The reader sees, however, that nothing of the sort can be discerned in it. On the contrary, such a connection is rather rejected here, insofar as classical idealist philosophy was invariably associated with religious ideas of one kind or another, and insofar as, moreover, Feuerbach's teaching, which is actually meant here, fundamentally rejects idealist philosophy. In keeping with this worldview, in Marx's language "human emancipation" means at this time precisely liberation from religion. This point of view emerges especially clearly in the dispute with Bauer on the Jewish question. He points here to the insufficiency of purely political emancipation, because under it religion still persists.

"The question is this: how does complete political emancipation relate to religion? If even in a country with complete political emancipation we find religion not merely existing but flourishing, this proves that the existence of religion does not contradict the completeness of the state. But since the existence of religion is connected with the existence of a certain defect (Mangels), the cause of this defect must be sought in the very essence of the state. Religion no longer appears to us as the cause but only as the manifestation of nonreligious (weltlichen) limitation. We therefore explain the religious limitations of the citizens of a free state by their general (weltlichen) limitations.

We do not assert that they must free themselves from religious limitations in order to free themselves from their general (weltlichen) limitations. We assert that they free themselves from their religious limitations only by freeing themselves from their general limitations. We do not turn secular questions into theological ones; we turn human questions into secular ones. History has been dissolved in superstitions long enough; we dissolve superstition in history. The question of the relationship between political emancipation and religion becomes for us the question of the relationship between political emancipation and human emancipation... The limits of political emancipation manifest themselves precisely in the fact that the state can free itself from a particular limitation without man becoming free in this respect, that the state can become a free state without man becoming a free man. <...>

The members of the political state are religious owing to the dualism between individual and species-life, between the life of civil society and political life; religious insofar as man relates to state life, which is otherworldly for his actual individuality, as to his true life; religious insofar as religion is the spirit of bourgeois society, the expression of the separation and estrangement of man from man. Political democracy is Christian insofar as in it man—not man in general but every man—is considered sovereign, the highest being, and moreover man in his uncultivated, unsocial form (Erscheinung), in the accidental (!) form of existence, man as he is in life, man as he is corrupted by the whole organization of our society, lost, alienated from himself, given over to the domination of inhuman elements and forces—in a word, man who is not yet truly a species-being (Gattungswesen). The fantastic image, the dream-vision, the postulate of Christianity—the sovereignty of man, but of man as an alien being distinct from the real man—is sensuous reality in democracy."

It is not difficult to recognize here Feuerbach's idea of the Gattungswesen, of the human species as the final and highest authority for man. In Marx this "love for the distant" and for what does not yet exist turns into contempt for the existing "neighbor" as corrupted and lost, and Christianity is reproached for professing the equal worth of all persons, for teaching us to honor man in every man.

Here again Marx's characteristic disregard for personality surfaces.

The true man will appear only under the following conditions:

"Only when the real individual man takes back into himself (in sich zurücknimmt) the abstract citizen of the state, and as an individual man in his individual situation, in his individual labor, in his empirical life becomes a species-being; only when man has recognized and organized his own forces (forces propres) as social forces and therefore no longer separates social forces from himself in the form of political force—only then will human emancipation be accomplished."

So, when man abolishes his individuality and human society turns into something like Sparta, or an anthill, or a beehive, then human emancipation will be accomplished. With the same ease with which Marx generally passes over the problem of individuality, here too, in the name of human emancipation, that is, the destruction of religion, he is ready to dissolve this personality being emancipated in the dark and dense fog from which this "species-being" is woven, which hovered in Feuerbach's imagination and melts into air at every attempt to grasp it.

But this judgment also reveals the characteristic impotence of atheistic humanism, which is unable to sustain both personality and the whole at once, and therefore constantly falls from one extreme to another: either personality, by its revolt, destroys the whole and, in the name of the rights of the individual, denies the species (Stirner, Nietzsche), or personality is abolished by the whole, by some socialist Sparta, as in Marx. Only on religious soil, where the highest manifestation of individuality makes all kin and unites them in supra-individual love and a common life, only the union of people through Christ in God—that is, the Church, a personal and at the same time supra-personal union—is capable of overcoming this difficulty and, while affirming individuality, preserving the whole. But the idea of ecclesial or religious community is so remote from modern consciousness...

We cannot pass in silence over Marx's judgments on the Jewish question, in which his rigid straightforwardness and peculiar spiritual blindness manifest themselves with particular sharpness. With the same ease with which he drowns personal individuality in the "species-being" for the glory of "human emancipation," he abolishes national self-consciousness, the collective personality of a people, indeed of his own people—the most enduring and indissoluble amid the waves and hurricanes of history, the axis of all world history.

The Jewish question for Marx is the question of the usurer-“Yid,” which resolves itself with the abolition of interest. What Marx wrote on the Jewish question makes the most repulsive impression on me. Nowhere did this icy, blind, one-sided rationalism manifest itself in such a naked form as here. But let us instead cite Marx’s own judgments. “The question of the Jews’ capacity for emancipation turns into the question: what special social element must be overcome in order to eliminate Jewishness? For the capacity of present-day Jews for emancipation is the relation of Jewishness to the emancipation of the present world. This relation is necessarily determined by the special position of Jewry in the present enslaved world. Let us look at the real, ordinary (weltlichen) Jew, not the Sabbath Jew but the weekday Jew. What is the worldly foundation of Jewishness? Practical need, self-interest. What is the worldly cult of the Jews? Huckstering (Schachern). What is his secular god? Money. Therefore emancipation from huckstering and money, hence from practical, real Jewishness, would be the self-emancipation of our time. The organization of society which would abolish the preconditions of huckstering would make Jewishness impossible. Its religious consciousness would dissipate like a thin mist in the actual atmosphere of social life... The emancipation of Jewry in this sense is the emancipation of humanity from Jewishness. What was the basis of the Jewish religion itself? Practical need, egoism... Money is the jealous god of Israel, beside which no other god can exist... The god of the Jews has become worldly, he has become a worldly god. The bill of exchange is the real god of the Jew. His god is an illusory bill of exchange. What is present in the Jewish religion in abstract form—contempt for theory, art, history, man as an end in himself—is the actual conscious standpoint, the virtue of money-minded humanity (Geldmenschen)... The chimerical nationality of the Jew is the nationality of the merchant, of the money-man in general.”
