People’s Bearing [выправка: drill-bearing, straightening-out]
Almost eight years have passed since the beginning of the world war. But these are not years, this is — a century has rushed past. In July 1914 our continent immediately gave off an insane voltage, and within a month it was cut through by ranks, columns, trenches and dugouts.
The cannonade, it seems, turned Mont Blancs inside out. Scientists, writers, priests, engineers, workers, peasants — all went to work as in a typhoid fever. “Shells, shells!” — screamed the press and hummed the telegraph. Around Verdun alone the guns threw out as much metal as the whole of pre-war Russia extracted in the course of a year…
Forty million men stood under arms. And Europe and America were preparing a second forty-million shift…
Russia answered with revolution. And to the astonishment of many here, besides the singing of the Marseillaise and red flags, there rushed past a genuine black banner of dirt, soot, civil war, hunger, cannibalism.
The revolution, instead of rest, demanded still greater tension; it appealed to frenzy and to the rabidity [fury] of blows.
It fell to the lot of Russia to undergo the most nightmarish manoeuvres of war and the most frenzied manoeuvres of revolution.
The historical test of these eight years is marked for us by a record of death and a record of hunger.
History was taking its revenge. It is impossible in this century — calculated, verified, severely methodical — to continue our village idyll. It was impossible to doze and live from Easter to Easter, and after Easter — “to the homeland in Ryazan province.”
We even conducted our strikes in spring and summer. In winter we worked, and in summer… struggle… together with the home-leave to the homeland.
Meanwhile, whether we wished it or not, the revolution passed under an economic flag and, at first going as a great swell [wave], from strip to strip, approached ever more closely to economic methodicalness, to the “trifle,” to the “silent sap” [slow undermining] and to training.
The revolution proved experimentally, almost in laboratory fashion, that for spontaneous uprisings and spontaneous reactions in present times one will have to pay with a catastrophe of culture.
And when two years ago interest sharply outlined itself in the scientific organisation of labour, in “production propaganda,” “production ideology,” and then just as sharply subsided, these were those same strips [phases, bands], “in the Russian manner.” Here was our broad zeal, insofar as it touched the broad masses; here too was a helpless hothouse-quality, insofar as uncombed young men and romantically disposed maidens began to speak about these things.
Now with all this it has become quiet, quiet to the point of oblivion.
But nevertheless here there was a guess [surmise]. We have already reached the boundary, we are on the eve of a new epoch, when it will be necessary to speak not for a day, not for two, not even for years, but for a decade, and not only to speak, but to make a new culture, unseen until now — Labour Culture.
This will be a new social movement, this will be the style of our factories, our barracks, schools, special societies, popular festivities, theatres, manifestations. It will demand mobilisations, it will demand a peculiar partisanship [guerrilla-ness] and, finally, it will give a genuine labour army, which at present shows through only as the haze of a historical design.
Here in brief are the contours of this coming culture, with which our revolution must be crowned.
I. Acute Observantness
I. Острая наблюдательность
It is necessary to cultivate a petty [small-scale] alertness towards life, towards its most everyday manifestation, to drown these decomposing philosophical generalisations. You go along the pavement, and a peasant goes along a swamp path: look, are there not two different types of your gaits — the straight tread of the townsman, the sprung [leaf-spring] step of the peasant; explain why this is so and say which gait is acceptable for long marches. You come up to the machine-tool. Fix your attention only upon the cutter and the chip, and do the very same thing during slow running. And thus from day to day. Mint your impressions. On the morrow fix them, colour them with a repeated, verifying observation. One may be certain that out of observations even over the cry of market-women at the bazaar you will create a particular science or, in any case, you will construct the bazaar itself with an accounting of everything that takes place upon it. Observation must be taught to all schoolchildren, all sportsmen, all soldiers, all working youth, all workers and peasants, all citizens. And especially the observation of work, with the attempt to transmit it rapidly, to memorise it even if only in a tenth part.
II. Love for the Instruments of Labour
II.
Anything whatever: a factory cutter, a drill, an axe, a hammer, a spade, a pencil, a flail, a bit — all this must be acknowledged as our human treasure. The culture of the tool proceeded for centuries and millennia; it was created by the spontaneous inertia of all humanity. In our time it is necessary to study some carpenter’s axe just as biologists study blood, as physicists study the law of magnetism. In schools it is necessary to observe children, upon what tool their attention comes to rest, to consolidate this interest and to push towards inventions in this domain. Every small change gives an overturn in processing technique. A banal thought is very widespread, that soon tools will not be needed, that the machine will do everything. But here is a philistine misunderstanding. For all tools, all processing machines, are the intuition of the human body, of the human organism. Even if the machine triumphs triumphantly, the study of primitive instrumentation and of the mechanics of the human body will perhaps become still more attentive.
At present processing tools are little loved. And in factories they are hated. And so hopelessly have all these hammers, planes, axes frozen in their evolution.
It is necessary in our time to create a whole cult of tools, to create a serious new science of the laws of work with tools.
HE WHO KNOWS BUT CANNOT DO — THIS IS A MECHANISM WITHOUT A MOTOR
III. The School of Labour Motions
III.
Under contemporary culture, especially in Russia, the human organism finds itself in a pitiful position. It interests chiefly doctors, or, more precisely, medics [leeches], and interests them ex officio. Thus, much is said about forces being squandered, about the economy of labour. But our first task consists in occupying ourselves with that magnificent machine which is so close to us — the human organism. This machine possesses the luxury of mechanics — automatism and rapidity of switching-on [engagement]. Is it not this that is to be studied? In the human organism there is a motor, there is a “transmission,” there are shock-absorbers, there are perfected brakes, there are the finest regulators, there are even manometers. All this demands study and utilisation. There must be a particular science — biomechanics — which may be cultivated in a refined-laboratory setting [surroundings], and may also be set up in any domestic room, in the open air, on a ground, in any workshop. This science need not be narrowly a “labour” science; it must border upon sport, but a sport where motions are strong, dexterous and at the same time aerially light, mechanically artistic.
COMRADES! YOU NEED WILL, DARING AND HOLDING-OUT
IV. The Art of Working with the Least Expenditure of Force
IV.
The quantity of sweat secreted during work often speaks not of the fact that the work is hard, but of the fact that there is precisely no culture of labour. We often work like savages. We have not mastered a simple thing: how to install a convenient breathing during work; such an Installation [установка: also setting, set] is made by sportsmen and wrestlers; it is applied to an extremely limited portion of dabbling [self-indulging] humanity and is not applied to the working classes. Our breathing very often does not feed and does not lighten work; it obstructs work.
We are terrible barbarians in the distribution of our efforts. We “pile ourselves” upon the work or else simply “drag it out” [волынить: slack, go slow]. It is necessary to accustom oneself to a light distribution of our efforts.
And however strange this may be, we do not know how to rest. Can we lie down upon a bed after work so as to release all muscles at once and feel that the entire corpus [trunk] helplessly collapses downwards?
It is necessary to proclaim not only an academic, but an everyday, social science of the energetics of the labourer.
Why, why are mountains of books written about thermal energy, about fireboxes, boilers, steam engines, electricity, anthracite, white coal, electrification, and nothing is written about the energetics of the labourer?
Why are all fences pasted over with playbills about farces, while in factories there is not on a single wall, not on a single workbench, a single line on how to extract and how to expend living human energy? And this in a country which is called worker-peasant!
V. The Selection of Characters and Moods
The sorting of characters, the determination of the psychology of the working man and at least an approximate counsel (not, to be sure, fortune-telling) as to where and how to set [place] a man, must become the obligation of schools, military units and factories. With such a setting-up [постановка] even a cretin will find his place, and a madcap will find a suitable basin.
We must fight for the creation of particular graphs of working moods, the creation of particular curves of work, the creation of particular psychological grips [приёмы: techniques, methods] of how to “enter into” work.
Finally, every profession, every working operation, every labour grip must have its fitting mood, must demand its character.
VI. Training
VI.
But here is the genuine virgin soil, where the foot of neither scientist nor practitioner has stepped. Even if it has to be given birth to, this science of labour instructional trainings must be made. There is the training of the violinist, the dancer, the acrobat, the fencer, but there is no most principal training — that of genuine labour. It is necessary to spread across all our worker and peasant millions particular training recipes [prescriptions] — how to train, to educate, to instruct in the correct blow, how to learn the press quickly, how to learn to distribute pressure. Across the whole people it is necessary to spread cheap training models of labour exercises. If formerly “Müller’s gymnastics” was in the room of the little master or the amateur, training models must be not only in factories, but in every peasant hut. And let this new, genuine labour pedagogy move national culture just as some inoculation against epidemic diseases moved it.
VII. Economical Motions of Things and Men in Space
VII.
Our country, deeply rural, backwoods, where at times it seems whole districts vanish, where suddenly hundred-verst unregistered forest tracts are “discovered” — our country must be fenced round, must be urbanised.
The shortest line, the gain of space, the laws of motion of many bodies with different velocities and encounters along a limited quantity of lines, the planning-out and arrangement upon a tiny plot of a complex enterprise — here is the code of the new engineering science of the construction of motions. This science must be known by the soldier, the city head, the militiaman, the doorkeeper, the commander, the village elder, and not only by the builder of railways and the telegraph master.
Here is the complex of that culture for which our country must fight. If it does not assimilate this new engineering tone of the epoch, if from bottom to top the education of the whole people is not set up, if this People’s Bearing is not methodically inoculated [grafted], the townsman of Europe and America will go round [overtake] us — a townsman already far from so developed and knowing, but deftly portable and trained.
And however we may dispute about the order in which we now live, one thing is clear: its social content demands a new culture, saturated with work, energy, holding-out.
