From the heated disputes concerning education, upbringing and culture we approach training.
Culture — this is the sum of the habits of a people, its ability [skill] to labour, the sum of its processing [обработка: working-over of material] possibilities…
We — a country deprived of traditions. This is our fortune and our misfortune. Before us are opened boundless possibilities; behind our back there is no knapsack with traditions. We are not pressed down by the stability of culture, as it presses down the Englishman or even the American, but, on the other hand, we must be subject to innumerable cultural epidemics [поветрие: a wind-borne pestilence], we can be endlessly worn out [изнашивать: as a machine or a garment is worn out] by impromptu campaigns, we are often condemned to live as though in an endless “change of landmarks”.
The period of the revolutionary assault has ended. It is necessary to build. It is necessary to place upon the agenda the creation of elementary cultural habits, without which it is impossible to make a firm, new life. Russia is now not a bivouac. Russia has entered the strip [stretch, band] of work. Those work well who have passed through the stage of training or who receive it by inheritance.
Before all else, an elementary physical training is necessary to us. Our physical life manifests itself externally in motions. We must battle for the creation of a particular plasticity of motions. This science up until now has been scattered across the entire historical extent of mankind; among various peoples it assumed the most diverse forms. Now we can utilise the entire rich historical material which the army, sport and trade have given us, and create economical normals [standards] of motions. In a word, we must create an everyday [бытовой: of daily life, household] biomechanics. Every citizen, and especially he who studies in the school, in the university, passes through the ranks of the army — all must pass through the ordeal [искус: trial, temptation] of economical and dexterous motions. It would be possible even not to compose new textbooks, new manuals, and to utilise the rich material of military regulations, sporting societies, contemporary games, and to make the passing-through of all this an obligatory course in all schools and barracks. It is necessary to learn to command [possess] one’s body, it is necessary to liquidate elemental [stihiynyi: spontaneous, uncontrolled], physical looseness, when the whole body does not work, but helplessly strolls about. Speaking more simply, we need to create a breed of lucky [dashing] men, who command the principal types of motions.
Of course, the system of general motions must be complicated by specific labour-motions. We must achieve that the young men of the new Russia pass a particular examination of motions, and especially of labour-motions. If a man is not a cripple, then he must pass an examination in two types of motions — in striking and pressing. It is necessary to know how to strike correctly, it is necessary to know how to press correctly. The strike [blow] — this is a labour-motion, in the greater part of it conducted outside the object being processed, a rapid, sharp motion; the press [pressure] — this is a motion, the whole time brought into contact with the object being processed, a smooth motion.
The strike — this is pre-eminently an examination of force-loading, joined with dexterity. The press — this is an examination of the finest redistribution of efforts.
It would be possible not to demand that a man necessarily know some trade, but it is necessarily required to demand that every citizen exactly command the two fundamental manifestations of work — the strike and the press.
The creation of a plasticity of motions must be supplemented by the ability to look after oneself, after one’s body. It is time to take away from doctors the privilege of being oracles concerning the slightest incident in our organism. Let us not forget that in Western Europe first aid at the factory is given by the unskilled labourer [чернорабочий: literally black-worker] who issues the instrument [tools]; he gives it rapidly, without waiting for the doctor. Into the concept of physical culture must enter the ability to nourish oneself, not much, but fillingly, with a regulation of the schedules of food, even within the limits of the very poorest possibilities, strengthening or diminishing the quantity of salt, black bread and water. Our elemental gobbling [жранье: coarse, animal eating], our desire always to eat as though at the counter in a tavern, must be liquidated and replaced by a genuine philistine [мещанский: petty-bourgeois] dinner, to spite all the preachers of Russian trampdom. We advance further the idea of a training of breathing, of that training which is known to thousands of our sportsmen and which, unfortunately, our proletarians and our students do not know.
Perhaps, all this must be supplemented by a particular regime of behaviour, which contributes to the correct exchange of substances [metabolism] in the organism. Here again it is necessary to proclaim and rehabilitate that so beautifully cursed-out philistinism, which rises at a determined hour, lies down at a determined hour, opens the window-vents and, if only for five minutes, takes air at the open window (il prend de l'air).
We pass now to psychological training.
The purely psychological qualities, which are necessary to us before all else — these are the speed of reactions and the automatism of work. It is possible to conduct scientific disputes over whether the speed of reaction yields to training, but, in any case, the state of psychological alertness [wariness, being on guard], the absence of scatter-brainedness [растяпанность: the state of the bungler who lets things drop], the readiness immediately, categorically, to answer a question briefly — these qualities are necessary to us to the point of the knife [дозарезу: desperately]. Psychological looseness among us is often covered over by a philosophical phrase, by a muddled syllogistic loading, under which it is absolutely impossible to establish — yes or no, or both together. In the psychological relation we have everywhere the same pretension to originality as, for example, the uncombed heads of passionately convinced revolutionaries. One must set it as a rule for oneself that from a man one may not demand originality, but to demand from him a minimum of automatism is necessary. Men who object against automatisation — these are cranks [eccentrics], with whom one must converse on these themes precisely at that moment when they, with open mouth, fall under the wheels of a tram. Labour-training presupposes great patience and even severity. The demagnetised preaching of self-activity [самодеятельность: initiative from below], these constant strainings [потуги: labour pains, vain efforts] towards creativity of those men who do not possess the patience to carry one and the same thought through in several directions — are harmful and reactionary. In training there are possible not only a joyful mood, not only the so-called immediate interest, but direct violence over our own nature, which protests entire against system and regularity. Only a savage or only a child can manifest immediate interest in work or in play. For a cultured man not every atom of his work can be interesting. It is necessary to habituate oneself to work when one does not want to, to train when “there is no mood.” An orientation upon mood, an orientation upon the constant interestedness of children and adults, an orientation so popular among the pedagogues of the labour-school — inevitably leads to cultural collapse. Of course, one cannot preach corporal punishments, but, in any case, it is necessary without hesitation to set up a severe, patient training, not alien even to compulsion.
Psychological training passes directly over into organisational training, and the first examination of organisational training must be, of course, not planning or even directive [распорядительный: ordering, dispositive] work, but executive work. Let us say it just so, directly — “obedience.” Here will be verified the speed of reaction, automatism and the capacity to take on [perceive] a working mood, in which, as far as possible, every accidental domestic lyricism would be absent. Even to men who have completed higher education it is necessary to give a task upon the rapid planning-out of a table, the arrangement [composition] of a room, the tracking-down of telephones, the finding of addresses without lengthy explanations. These will all be exercises in space. Further will go exercises in time. Not a single commission [errand] without a term [срок: deadline], not a single assignment without measurement, and only then, when the given subject has passed through the severe school of organisational-executive training, only then will it be possible to admit him to directive, and all the more to planning, functions. And believe [us], that now it is far harder to make a personal secretary for some head of a department than, for example, to appoint a new chairman of an executive committee.
Upon the basis of all this there must take shape a particular science — the pedagogy of training. It is built painstakingly and pettily. In it everything is calculated and accounted for. In the pedagogy of training three stages can be marked out: general gymnastics, the imitation of work and, finally, real work. Gymnastics — this is the grinding [шлифовка: polishing, as of metal] of separate elements of work, precisely of those physical and psychological motions which can be taken outside the brackets [factored out] from the innumerable multitude of complexes of work. Let them not manifest particular nervousness and haste, so as to seize more quickly upon natural work. This is not calculating. This will be costly spoilage [брак: rejects, defective output]. Gymnastics — this is the pure technique of motions, in which there may not even be elements of everyday necessity, but only it, precisely it, is the school of real training. Imitational exercise has as its aim to habituate the man to loading [нагрузка: load]. And then, when we arrive at real natural operations, they must be consolidated [fixed, secured] by the most insistent, unremitting training in order to attain the naked automatism of work.
HABITUATE YOURSELF TO EXECUTE EXACTLY — YOU WILL MORE EASILY LEARN TO DIRECT
SYSTEMATIC TRAINING WILL SHORTEN THE TIME OF INSTRUCTION IN LABOUR, AND WILL MAKE LABOUR ITSELF LIGHTER
Training is precisely that which pre-decides [predetermines] automatism, and even more, that which pre-decides social automatism. This social automatism is the pledge of the wholeness and indestructibility of human culture at that moment when its material supports are collapsing. Questions of social discipline, questions of tempo, of the adjusted [налаженный: tuned, set going] functioning of society, are, of course, resolved by this social automatism. The question of the actual realisation of socialism, of communism, consists to a significant degree in accumulating such a sum of training-capital under which Soviet strong-acting means would not be needed.
Into training we have run up [уперлись: butted, come to a stop against].
