I. Elements of the New Will

A young country with an impassable stratum of taiga, with four-hundred-thousand-verst rivers, with boundless plains over which snowstorms race on furious stilts, a country barely emerged from the stage of nomadism — a Euro-Asiatic mass [hulk] — Russia, where Peter I got bogged up to his ears and nearly drowned in the swamp — this country has long called for a gigantic revolutionary gesture.¹

Молодая страна с непроходимым пластом тайги, с четырехсоттысячеверстными реками, с бескрайними равнинами, по которым на бешеных ходулях мчатся бураны, страна, чуть вышедшая из стадии кочевья, – европо-азиатская громада, – Россия, где по уши завяз и чуть не утонул в болоте Петр I, – эта страна издавна звала к гигантскому революционному жесту.

A gallery of great men went on, measuring out the centuries, the glows of revolts loomed before the people, until, at last, with zenith fire the greatest of all revolutions burned to ash the cowardly squelchiness [flabbiness] of gawkers and contemplators.

Power inspired by the revolution, the authentic child of social revolt, must set the task — how to process [work over] these masses risen in revolt, how to impart to them a new science of rapid self-processing. So as not only to conquer. But to be conquering continuously.

Вдохновленная революцией власть, подлинное дитя социального восстания, должна поставить задачу – как обрабатывать эти восставшие массы, как сообщить им новую науку быстрой самообработки. Чтобы не только победить. А побеждать непрерывно.

What, then, is to be thrown into the masses?

Что же бросать в массы?

What processing methods and what elements of processing?

Какие обработочные методы и какие элементы обработок?

— Above all, force.

– Прежде всего сила.

Force without quotation marks, the most genuine, elementary, physical force.

Сила без кавычек, самая настоящая, элементарная, физическая сила.

For long, too long, [people] lived in a sanctimonious negation of force.

Долго, слишком долго жили в ханжеском отрицании силы.

Force must be an element of the whole socio-cultural movement [motion]. It must be rehabilitated, made, cultivated, encouraged. Let all the masses learn to sense force, to breathe this force, to know its crude rapture.

Сила должна быть элементом всего социально-культурного движения. Ее надо реабилитировать, делать, воспитывать, поощрять. Пусть все массы научатся ощущать силу, дышать этой силой, знать ее грубый восторг.

Force must create work.

Сила должна создавать работу.

Methodical work of the musculature, the science of rest, the science of working mobilisation, of instantaneous immobilisation, work by an isolated sector, work carried through in the order of the compaction [condensation] of functions.

Методическая работа мускулатуры, наука отдыха, наука рабочей мобилизации, моментальной иммобилизации, работа изолированным участком, работа, проведенная в порядке уплотнения функций.

Dexterity — here is what must be the most important idea of culture. Dexterity is the art of constructing motions, an art which yields to practically boundless success, [and] is theoretically processed down to microscopic precision.

Ловкость – вот что должно быть наиважнейшей идеей культуры. Ловкость это – искусство конструировать движения, искусство, которое поддается практически беспредельному успеху, теоретически обрабатывается до микроскопической точности.

If we can treat force as a predominantly physiological function, work as physiology complicated by psychology (the art of regulating motions), then dexterity is dynamic psychology, the most important quality of the century in which classes step forward that wish not to die, but to battle.

Если силу мы можем трактовать, как преимущественно физиологическую функцию, работу – как физиологию, осложненную психологией (искусство регулирования движений), то ловкость – это динамическая психология, самое важное качество века, в котором выступают классы, желающие не умирать, а биться.

Out of all these elements there grows, quite inevitably, courage.

Из всех этих элементов вырастает совершенно неизбежно храбрость.

The delivery of a blow, in which it is necessary to overcome irresolution, the carrying through of a motion with confidence for every atom of work, minted [chased] accuracy — the social confidence of the class that has made the revolution. Further we note keen-sightedness, pathfinding [tracking], as the result of long socio-political exercises and strategic ruses, battles. Keen-sightedness is necessary of the simple, unmasked kind, such as the savage has, or the European brought up in Boy-Scoutism.

Нанесение удара, при котором надо преодолеть нерешительность, проведение движения с уверенностью за каждый атом работы, чеканная меткость – социальная уверенность класса, сделавшего революцию. Далее мы отмечаем зоркость, следопытство, как результат долгих социально-политических упражнений и стратегических хитростей, битв. Зоркость необходима простая, незамаскированная, такая, какая есть у дикаря или у европейца, воспитанного в бойскаутизме.

And, of course, it is insufficient to be a strongman and a dexterous-man [a quick-hand]; one must in our time have the quality of the mounter [монтёр], of a man capable of rapidly assembling, mounting, constructing, inventing, of being lightning-resourceful, of possessing a reserve of everyday-necessary fantasy and of shod memory.

И, конечно, недостаточно быть силачом и ловкачом, надо в наше время иметь качество монтера, человека, способного быстро собирать, монтировать, конструировать, изобретать, быть молниеносно находчивым, обладать запасом житейски-необходимой фантазии и подкованной памяти.

All these qualities create organisational knack, calculativeness.

Все эти качества создают организационную сноровку, расчетливость.

This is not that knack and calculativeness which the European or the American knows. No, this is something higher. There these qualities were cultivated in the setting of economic struggle against the background of certain settled norms. With us there proceeds an economic struggle demanding new orientations every minute, for the evolution of forms and organisations is non-stop.

Это не та сноровка и расчетливость, которую знает европеец или американец. Нет, это нечто высшее. Там эти качества воспитались в обстановке экономической борьбы на фоне известных отстоявшихся норм. У нас идет экономическая борьба, требующая ежеминутно новых ориентировок, ибо эволюция форм и организаций безостановочна.

It is necessary to create armies of physical, psychological and organisational strongmen.

Надо создавать армии физических, психологических и организационных силачей.

Along these lines it is necessary to cultivate, to train, it is necessary to make selections of labourers of culture.

По этим линиям надо воспитывать, тренировать, надо делать подборы работников культуры.

The recruitment [intake] of these armies must be given by the social lower strata [the lower depths], chiefly by the working youth, to whom a declaration must be thrown: be bolder, shoot further, into the most forbidden distances!

Набор этих армий должны дать социальные низы, главным образом рабочая молодежь, которой надо кинуть декларацию: будь смелей, стреляй дальше, в самые запретные дали!

II. In what form, then?

II. В какой же форме?

In the form of a new, peculiar Robinsonade. We must be colonisers of our own country. We — of course, we are a small handful in an agrarian wasteland — auto-colonisers.

В форме новой своеобразной робинзонады. Мы должны быть колонизаторами своей собственной страны. Мы, – конечно, нас небольшая кучка в аграрном пустыре, – автоколонизаторы.

We have an excellent freshness of ideas, we are young, but we have not the material might of the West and America, shackled in blindages [dugouts], rails and channel-beams. But live we must. We must rise from the dead, raise to unprecedented life an enormous continental stratum. And still more. The Asiatic peoples visibly gravitate towards us. They consider us tested brawlers in the struggle with the imperialist Plyushkins. We are the leaders of an enormous billion-strong mass of the people of Europe and Asia.²

У нас есть превосходная свежесть идей, мы молоды, но у нас нет материального могущества Запада и Америки, закованных в блиндажи, рельсы и швеллера. Но жить нам надо. Нам надо воскреснуть, поднять к небывалой жизни огромный материковый пласт. И еще больше. К нам явно тяготеют азиатские народы. Они нас считают испытанными забияками в борьбе с империалистическими Плюшкиными. Мы – вожаки огромной миллиардной массы людей Европы и Азии.

And at the same time we find ourselves in an unprecedented combat with a technically-armed cultural enemy — Europe and America.

И в то же время мы находимся в неслыханной схватке с технически-вооруженным культурным врагом – Европой и Америкой,

They are confident that they will crush us. Their confidence grows.

Они уверены, что нас раздавят. Их уверенность растет.

It is necessary to call to aid that which we can have: force, work, dexterity, courage, keen-sightedness, organisational knack. It is necessary to take the revolutionary lower strata onto magnets [to draw them in as a magnet draws].

Надо призвать на помощь то, что мы можем иметь: силу, работу, ловкость, храбрость, зоркость, организационную сноровку. Надо взять на магниты революционные низы.

And it is necessary to endeavour, even without technical material reserves, with these qualities to resolve our cultural problem. Precisely thus, and not otherwise, does the question now stand. The very birth of technics [technique, technology] we must place in dependence upon the work of the qualities enumerated above.

И надо постараться, даже не имея технических материальных запасов, с этими качествами разрешить нашу культурную проблему. Именно так, а не иначе теперь стоит вопрос. Самое рождение техники мы должны поставить в зависимость от работы перечисленных выше качеств.

In Europe and America there are phenomena, strokes [touches], which permit us to represent to ourselves more really the organisational expression of those qualities of which we spoke above.

В Европе и Америке есть явления, штрихи, которые позволяют нам реальнее представить организационное выражение тех качеств, о которых мы говорили выше.

Above all, sport.

Прежде всего спорт.

One need not argue about its forms, but only recognise that it is obligatory, like elementary literacy. Ten-thousand-strong crowds must look upon exhibitions of the body, of energy, of dexterity and of courage [manliness]. Circuses, races, contests, games, wrestling, juggling — all this must be accepted without pious ideological debates with an Orthodox whiff [taint].

Можно не спорить о его формах, но лишь признать, что он обязателен как элементарная грамотность. Десятитысячные толпы должны смотреть на выставки тела, энергии, ловкости и мужества. Цирки, бега, состязания, игры, борьба, жонглерство – все это надо принять без благочестивых идейных прений с православным душком.

Boy-Scoutism. A staggering idea of young Robinsons, inventors, severe players and ascetics [devotees], Boy-Scoutism was born as a synthesis of European culture with colonial savagery. It must be taken entirely whole, except for the sanctimoniously-patriotic and priestly elements.

Бойскаутизм. Потрясающая идея юных робинзонов, изобретателей, суровых игроков и подвижников, бойскаутизм родился как синтез европейской культуры с колониальным дикарством. Его надо взять весь целиком, кроме ханжески-патриотических и поповских элементов.

Interest in the primitive, in the everyday. This must be learned both from Germany (motorless aeroplanes) and from America (the simplification of production), but the true pathos [fervour] of this interest must be created among us. The hammer, the pincers, the wheel, the pencil, the match, the log — all this it is necessary to compel [people] to study from the point of view of discovering in them sensations of which the philistine does not even suspect.

Интерес к примитиву, к обыденному. Этому надо поучиться и у Германии (безмоторные аэропланы) и у Америки (упрощение производства), но настоящий пафос этого интереса надо создать у нас. Молоток, клещи, колесо, карандаш, спичка, полено – все это надо заставить изучить с точки зрения открытия в них сенсаций, о которых обыватель и не подозревает.

We must create particular “doers” [дельцы: operators, businessmen] of culture, not these writers of popular compilations about ideas with which the shops are now filled, but talented creator-mounters of practical systems along all lines of culture.

Нам надо создавать особых «дельцов» культуры, не этих писателей популярных компиляций об идеях, которыми наполнены теперь магазины, а талантливых творцов-монтеров практических систем по всем линиям культуры.

Love for labour, for the constructive lightness of physical work, of work neat, artistic.

Любовь к труду, к конструктивной легкости физической работы, работы опрятной, артистичной.

For the matter concerns an overturn [upheaval]. The matter concerns a never-seen new stratum of culture. The matter consists in this: that every citizen-child or even citizen-youth should in due time pass through (whether he entered school or not, it is all the same) a particular “call-up” to labour, analogous to military conscription. He must be dipped into a system of finely worked-out training. It is necessary to create a general-educational preparation, having which every adolescent could rapidly master any profession.

Дело ведь идет о перевороте. Дело идет о невиданном новом пласте культуры. Дело в том, чтобы каждый гражданин-ребенок или даже гражданин-юноша своевременно прошел (поступил он в школу, или нет, это все равно) особый «призыв» к труду, аналогично воинской повинности. Его надо окунуть в систему тонко разработанного тренажа. Надо создать общеобразовательную подготовку, имея которую каждый подросток мог бы быстро овладеть любой профессией.

This science will have a whole series of new disciplines, unseen, unheard-of, but extremely simple and at the same time culturally-revolutionary.

Эта наука будет иметь целый ряд новых дисциплин, невиданных, неслыханных, но крайне простых и в то же время культурно-революционных.

It is necessary to learn to strike dexterously, forcefully and accurately, to pass through the science of the blow. Undoubtedly, there will appear talented workers and professors who will write interesting books on this theme. It is necessary to learn to press; to cultivate the musculature and the psyche for fine pressing processings [workings]. Further will go methods of rotations, lifts, tensions, carryings over large distances, displacements, feeds and, finally, micro-feeds.

Надо научиться ловко, сильно и метко ударять, пройти науку удара. Несомненно, появятся талантливые рабочие и профессора, которые напишут на эту тему интересные книги. Надо научиться нажимать; воспитать мускулатуру и психику для тонких нажимных обработок. Далее пойдут методы вращений, подъемов, натяжений, переносок на большие дистанции, передвижений, подач и, наконец, микроподач.

We shall see then how, quite naturally, a social selection is formed: there will be created brigades of strikers, pressers, tight-fitters [packers-down], mounters; there will be organised sections of constructors, micro-motor-men and so forth. It is precisely here that the interest, saving us, in the primitive, in the trifle out of which miracles can be made, will be born. It is then that we shall create a mass institute of warriors [militiamen] of culture. Every warrior must have his own weapon, his own knapsack, his own necessaire of culture.

Мы увидим тогда, как совершенно естественно образуется социальный подбор: будут создаваться бригады ударщиков, нажимников, приплотщиков, монтеров; сорганизуются отделения конструкторов, микро-моторников и проч. Вот тут-то и родится спасающий нас интерес к примитиву, пустяку, из которого можно делать чудеса. Мы тогда-то создадим массовый институт ратников культуры. У каждого ратника должно быть свое оружие, свой ранец, свой несессер культуры.
