After a certain training armament [arming], it is necessary to lead the youth out into the air; it is necessary to place it face to face with the vital conjectures which real life knows. Those who have read the [little] books on NOT must be placed before a completely real peasant bast-shoe. The Psychologist-Laborant must be placed face to face, for the carrying-out of definite actions — before some renewal of icons. A youth, who has heard much about various wondrous machines, must be placed point-blank in the conditions of the taiga, frozen through for several arshins. This cultural-installational approach will be a genuine vital preparation, the value of which is cognised only in the economic-initiative feat [exploit].
После известного тренировочного вооружения нужно выводить молодежь на воздух, надо ставить ее перед лицом жизненных догадок, которые знает реальная жизнь. Прочитавших книжки по НОТ нужно ставить перед совершенно реальным крестьянским лаптем. Психолога-лаборанта надо ставить лицом к лицу для совершения определенных действий – перед каким-нибудь обновлением икон. Юношу, много наслышавшегося о различных чудесных машинах, нужно ставить в упор в условия промерзшей на несколько аршин тайги. Этот культурно-установочный подход будет настоящей жизненной подготовкой, ценность которой познается только в хозяйственно-инициативном подвиге.

We go to the village not with empty hands, not with an old tattered newspaper, which is so valued in the village… for “roll-ups” [hand-rolled cigarettes].
В деревню идем не с пустыми руками, не со старой истрепанной газетой, которую так ценят в деревне… для «цыгарок».
We go there with baggage.
Идем туда с багажом.
The baggage is small, but handy [dexterous], convenient and dearer than any gold. The baggage consists of the most genuine instruments, fixtures, drawings, reference-books, popular [little] books.
Багаж небольшой, но ловкий, удобный и дороже всякого золота. Багаж состоит из самых настоящих инструментов, приспособлений, чертежей, справочников, популярных книжек.
If during the reconnaissance there was perplexity, if the village then stunned [us] with its ineradicable inertness, then now we travel to the village confidently: the area of work is outlined, clear, holding-out is acquired, skill and methodics are present.
Если при разведке было недоумение, если деревня тогда ошарашила своей неизбывной косностью, то теперь в деревню мы едем уверенно: площадь работы очерчена, ясна, выдержка приобретена, уменье и методика есть.
The trial sets in, a genuine combat baptism [baptism of fire].
Наступает испытание, настоящее боевое крещение.
At once, on the very first steps, enormous tact will be required (not by brute rush, not by swoop), discipline and resourcefulness, and, the main thing, persistence and level [even] confidence.
Сразу на первых же шагах потребуется огромный такт (не снахрапа, не сналета), дисциплина и находчивость, а главное, упорство и ровная уверенность.
The village will not forgive phrase-making, insolence or importunity; the village will value even well-made wooden nails. And it is better to come to the village as an artless one even, but a spets [specialist] of a matter, a small one, but a necessary one. After this the village will understand that a school, and an agronomist, and good roads are needed.
Деревня не простит фразы, нахальства или назойливости, деревня оценит хотя бы хорошо приготовленные деревянные гвозди. И лучше в деревню прийти хоть незатейливым, но спецом дела, небольшого, но необходимого. После этого деревня поймет, что нужна и школа, и агроном, и хорошие дороги.
Thus, firmly knocked-together, well-prepared expeditions into the village must become the whetstone [touchstone] of organisation.
Итак, прочно сколоченные, хорошо подготовленные экспедиции в деревню должны стать оселком организации.
We must go there not as naked enlighteners, preachers, rote-readers [bookish dogmatists]. We must go as masters [foremen], mounters, Organizers.
Мы должны идти туда не как голые просветители, проповедники, начетчики. Мы должны идти как мастера, монтеры, организаторы.
Every victory, even a small one, must be taken into accounting. This accounting must not be irresponsibly-literary, but obligatorily of things [material] and documentary.
Всякая победа, хотя бы маленькая, должна быть взята на учет. Этот учет не должен быть безответственно-литературным, а обязательно вещевым и документальным.
The tool [weapon] with which you conquered, the fixture with which you created an effect, the plan which is accepted and carried through, documentary recognition, a book or manuscript, as an instruction created in the fire of victorious experience, must be given to an exhibition both in the city and in the village. In the city this is — a contagion for new agents, irresolute and timid; in the village — a contagion for the unbelieving.
Орудие, которым ты победил, приспособление, которым ты создал эффект, план, который принят и проведен, документальное признание, книга или рукопись, как инструкция, созданная в огне победоносного опыта, должны быть даны на выставку как в городе, так и в деревне. These exhibitions, and together with them the success of the expeditions — must be counted as the very best form of personal and collective contest.

Exhibitions and contests are open to all; there will trudge inventors, dray-horse-Organizers [heavy-haulage workhorses], nuggets [self-taught talents] and all those who wish to participate in this combat siege of the village.
Выставки и конкурсы открыты для всех, туда побредут изобретатели, ломовики-организаторы, самородки и все те, кто хочет участвовать в этой боевой осаде деревни.
§ 14. Organisation
§ 14. Организация
Comrades, who know one another well from production, party, trade-union [professional], co-operative, soviet, educational, military work, give a vow of unification. Large groups are not needed. It is better if at first they are small (fives, tens), but columns welded [soldered] together by discipline and friendship. Their task — severe preparation and exercise. This group forms a station of cultural Installation (a “u-station”) with an elected chief of the station.
Товарищи, хорошо знающие друг друга по производственной, партийной, профессиональной, кооперативной, советской, учебной, военной работе, дают зарок объединения. Не надо больших групп. Лучше, если они сначала будут небольшие (пятерки, десятки), но спаянные дисциплиной и дружбой колонны. Их задача – суровая подготовка и упражнение. Эта группа образовывает станцию культурной установки («у-станция») с выборным начальником станции.
The chief is in charge of the general organisational set-up [staging] of the affair; he is — the supreme setter-up of regime, training and mobilisation of forces; he is also the Organizer of the campaign. Besides the chief there must be a duty-man of the station, put forward by the general meeting and confirmed by the chief. The duty-man — is that comrade who carries out the general accounting of the work of the group; he is also the current consultant on various questions of the station and of life, on everyday mounting preparation, instrument, aids and books.
Начальник ведает общей организационной постановкой дела, он – верховный постановщик режима, тренировки и мобилизации сил, он же и организатор похода. Кроме начальника должен быть дежурный станции, выдвигаемый общим собранием и утверждаемый начальником. Дежурный – это тот товарищ, который осуществляет общий учет работы группы, он же текущий консультант по различным вопросам станции и жизни, по будничной монтажной подготовке, инструменту, пособиям и книгам.
The work of the station expresses itself chiefly in training.
Работа станции выражается главным образом в тренировке.
As indicated above, the training proceeds along three lines: regime, labour, organisation.
Как указано выше, тренировка идет по трем линиям: режим, труд, организация.
The chief expression of regime will be the time-card, then the planning of time placed upon its basis, nutrition, cleanliness, gymnastics, sport.
Главным выражением режима будет карточка времени, потом поставленная на ее основе планировка времени, питание, чистота, гимнастика, спорт.
Labour grips [приёмы: techniques, methods] for elementary, but well-executed metal-fitting [bench-work], joinery, elementary machine-tool knack and mounting, are set regularly — with the handing-in of a trial-piece.
Трудовые приемы на элементарное, но хорошо выполненное слесарство, столярство, станочную элементарную сноровку и монтаж, ставятся регулярно – со сдачей пробы.
Organisational knack with all its varieties: investigation (photography of the working day, surveying, planning), exact exposition and drawing, projecting [designing] and “exit from the situation,” — is acquired in special exercises, which the group organises for the investigation and partial improvement of workshops, shops, separate cells of organisation (without clamorous denunciations, modestly, without hindering the work). Into organisational knack will also enter the work on the acquisition of mounter’s baggage, the means for which are obtained from one’s own, even if meagre, earnings.
Организационная сноровка со всеми разновидностями: обследованием (фотография рабочего дня, съемка, планирование), точным изложением и чертежом, проектированием и «выходом из положения», – приобретается на особых упражнениях, которые организует группа по обследованию и частичному улучшению мастерских, цехов, отдельных клеток организации (без крикливых обличений, скромно, не мешая работе). В организационную сноровку войдет и работа по приобретению монтерского багажа, средства на который получаются от собственного, хотя бы скудного заработка.
All participants of the station — these are young mounters.
Все участники станции – это молодые монтеры.
The practice of training will soon, very soon, uncover characters.
Практика тренировки скоро, очень скоро обнаружит характеры.
The chief, with the help of the duty-man of the station, gradually accumulating observations over the young mounters, can establish [install] who inclines more towards what.
Начальник при помощи дежурного по стации, постепенно накапливая наблюдения над молодыми монтерами, может установить, кто куда больше склонен.
One will be a splendid, exemplary man of regime.
Один будет прекрасный, образцовый человек режима.
Another will predominantly reveal constructive capacities, labour knack; this will be a man of mounting.
Другой по преимуществу выявит конструктивные способности, трудовую сноровку, это будет человек монтажа.
A third, however, will prove to be especially orientating in space and time, a splendid planner and investigator. This, consequently, is a man of organisation.
Третий же окажется особо ориентирующимся в пространстве и времени, прекрасный планировщик и обследователь. Это, стало быть, человек организации.
Thus will be revealed the arrangement [lay-out] of the group, which, perhaps, will have to be re-formed.
Так и выявится компоновка группы, которую, может быть, придется переформировывать.
The Organizer — is he to whom, in the future expedition, the first word in orientation, investigation and plan will belong. It would be best of all if the Organizer coincided with the chief of the station. The regime-man, this is — in the future expedition — the reliable man of the very place of work, of its order, accounting, supply; it would be good if he coincided with the duty-man. And the mounter, in the fullest sense of this word, this is — he who will already have to unfold the work; this is — the builder.
Организатор – это тот, кому в будущей экспедиции будет принадлежать первое слово в ориентировке, обследовании и плане. Лучше всего было бы, если бы организатор совпал с начальником станции. Режимник это – в будущей экспедиции надежный человек самого места работы, ее порядка, учета, снабжения; хорошо, если бы он совпал с дежурным. А монтер, в полнейшем смысле этого слова, это – тот, которому придется уже развертывать работу, это – строитель.
The station, besides practical, regime, labour and organisational work, conducts also theoretical preparation, greedily sucking in everything there is along the three lines designated above. For the affair of mobilising such information, books, people with special preparation (for help), a secretary is detached.
Станция, кроме практической, режимной, трудовой и организационной работы, ведет и теоретическую подготовку, жадно всасывая все, что есть по намеченным выше трем линиям. На дело мобилизации таких сведений, книг, людей со специальной подготовкой (на помощь) выделяется секретарь.
Here, in general outlines, is the skeleton of the organisation. At the basis of recruitment and electiveness is laid record of service [стаж], the most real: the handing-in of a trial-piece, the execution of work, the accurate execution of regime, and in future — successfully conducted work on an expedition.
Вот в общих чертах скелет организации. В основу комплектования и выборности кладется стаж, самый реальный: сдача пробы, выполнение работы, аккуратное выполнение режима, а в будущем – удачно проведенная работа по экспедиции.
Our traditions were forged by our entire history, by the history of our revolution.
Наши традиции выковывались всей нашей историей, историей нашей революции.
Prison, penal servitude [каторга], exile accustomed us to the skill of making do with the very smallest quantity of means and of being comparatively tidy and tempered. War and revolution gave a second, and already mass, tempering to our active human material.
Тюрьма, каторга, ссылка нас приучили к уменью обходиться с самым небольшим количеством средств и быть сравнительно опрятными и закаленными. Война и революция дали второй и уже массовый закал нашему активному человеческому материалу.
The wilds of exile collided us face to face with absolute peoplelessness, with the polar circle, with horrifying destitution, yet not one hundred [i.e. many hundreds] of people proved to be splendid cultural installers of doomed places.
Ссыльные дебри сталкивали нас лицом к лицу с абсолютным безлюдьем, с полярным кругом, с ужасающей нищетой, но не одна сотня людей явилась прекрасными культурными установщиками гиблых мест.
Let us recall alongside this the bold ones — re-settlers, who departed from hungry Russia as paupers and proved to be splendid colonisers of the Volga, the Urals, Siberia and the North.
Вспомним наряду с этим смельчаков – переселенцев, уезжавших из голодной России нищими и явившихся прекрасными колонизаторами Волги, Урала, Сибири и Севера.
Before our eyes grow up the ranks of revolutionary economic big-wheels [воротила: one who turns things; a magnate]. They, personally or as a united collective, move great affairs. The coming years look upon us with a challenge.
На наших глазах вырастают шеренги революционных хозяйственных воротил. Они лично или дружным коллективом двигают большие дела. Грядущие годы смотрят на нас с вызовом.
