Since we have begun speaking of the factory, there is here such a splendid institute as the “installers” (or “adjusters” and “tuners”), about whom there is no literature whatsoever, but who are splendid mounters [assemblers] of machine-tools. They — precisely those cultural technicians who create the factory organisation. It is precisely thanks to them that it proved possible to unfold such factories as the Putilov [Works] and others, which in peacetime had some 10,000-strong load, in wartime up to 50,000 men. The installer can, by his mounting, attach to production enormous unqualified masses, who, thanks to bungling [slovenly] philistinism, still know nothing. The chief engineers of factories, upon whom lies the function of the bold unfolding of production, the precise manometric surveillance over this production; then — the chief mechanic, accustomed to guarding machine-tools and installations — these are all those who create the cultural Installation [setting] we need. Electrical mounters on telegraph and telephone wiring, accustomed to surveying enormous spaces and rapidly covering them with wires and insulations, duty-men at the electrical station, unremittingly watching the distribution board — these are splendid observers and guards of contemporary unfolding culture. The chiefs of large junction railway stations, ready at any minute to receive and dispatch loaded trains, to orient themselves among disorderly laid tracks, to create and conduct a complex railway timetable. Here is where one must learn abscissae and ordinates. The builder of an electrical station, of railway tracks, the track contractor — these are all men giving an example of economic resourcefulness, of the art of managing men and unfolding production. Masters [foremen] of mass assemblies, gangers [десятники] for the re-laying of tracks, for the transport of large mechanisms and for unloading. Here are the real mounters, from whom we must learn. The leaders of exploratory and scientific expeditions — from them we must learn how to unfold culture in virgin soil, how to manage to build, in the most savage, uninhabited place, within several weeks, a workers’ settlement, a factory or a station. A countless multitude of various operative labourers, agents in warehouses, in offices, in banks, in inquiry bureaux and, finally, enormous crowds of senior shop-clerks, who splendidly mount the commodity in small premises — here is where one must learn organisation, precise stowage [laying-out], splendid processing. Finally, the capacity to rapidly change one’s psycho-motor Installation we shall find in the aviator and the chauffeur, who every second throw themselves over from one Installation to another: from the steering-wheel to the brake, from the change of speeds to the feed of gas [the throttle], from smooth motion to alarm. Here is where real, living, and not dead psychology is. The physician-surgeon, with whom the knife or the lancet follows upon the diagnosis, the physician-orthopaedist, actually mounting man and attaching him to motion. Here is the rank of those volitional cultural installers, from whom we must learn and take the synthesis of that culture which we need.
We can scarcely enumerate this entire enormous scattered world of acute observers, of precise depictiveness [representational capacity], of worked-out regime-men, of portable mounters, of organisers, of resourceful men, of social installers. We bring forward this rank as an illustration, and wish to say that, evidently, it will be necessary to make cultural upbringing more operative, more vital, and not so ideological and stylisedly labour-like as the contemporary school gives it.
IN THE MACHINE-TOOL ALL IS CALCULATED AND FITTED. LET US LIKEWISE CALCULATE THE LIVING MACHINE TOO — MAN

§ 9. The routine of the school
Despite the fact that the contemporary school pre-decides [predetermines] a whole series of very everyday ideological impacts, it, of course, will not cope with that pressure of real culture which makes its noise around it. It is deprived, and will long yet be deprived, of organic connection with economic culture, which alone can resurrect it. However many years we may work intensively, we shall, evidently, achieve only a formal contact of the population with the school. The population will look upon this school as upon a duty-levy [повинность: an imposed obligation], and not as upon an economically-initiative workshop. All contemporary school reforms in the form of the introduction into it of labour processes, of laboratory methods of instruction, of connection with agriculture, will undoubtedly be hothouse ones so long as the serious mood of that rank which is indicated above is not introduced into the school — until then the school will be helpless and, apart from that routine literacy which the past school also gave, it can give nothing. Contemporary pedagogues may burst out laughing if one proposes to them to seek the best psychologists among detectives, the best mounters among sappers and firemen, the best organisers — among the chiefs of railway junction stations, teachers of will — among physician-surgeons and trainers, stewards [disposers] — among masters and under-hands [helpers, mates]. Despite the fact that we live in an extremely “labour” time, all these indications concerning the school may be taken for sheer eccentricity. — Not only here in Russia do teachers receive pitiful pennies, but even in the cultured countries of the West, as, for example, France, the rural teacher must make supplementary earnings in the form of the shoemaking trade. Into the contemporary school, by force of economic conditions and by force of that astonishing boredom which reigns in this school, only particularly untalented elements can go, who have nowhere else to go. We do not speak, of course, of individual persons. Among teachers and professors there may be splendid, talented and brilliant [genius] men. But these are, of course, exceptional heroes, sitting in the solitary cells of that prison which is called the school. In the mass, however, teachers are undoubtedly all that which has remained ungathered in our initiative-economic order. Everyone who has suffered failure in the struggle of life, who has not managed to pierce through the strata of life with fine observantness, clear depictiveness, ordered will, regime, a real and not a hothouse polytechnicism, splendid organisation, devilish inventiveness, social Installation — everyone who has suffered defeat in this domain will strive towards such corners of life as our school constitutes.
Evidently, it must be rebuilt, so as truly not to be merely a copy of that advanced thing which exists now in Western Europe.
§ 10. The popular movement
The further the economically-initiative energy develops in our country, the more unsuited to economic tasks our school will appear. And here what can help us is not the brilliant [genius] design of a supreme leader and persistent requests for credits. Sooner or later — already now — there arises a special line of social movement, which will be entirely constructed upon exercisability. Already such a movement as the Young Pioneers is a reaction against musty school-ism [schoolishness]. Already the factory-apprenticeship schools [FZU], despite their enormous shortcomings, are nevertheless a reaction against the first-stage schools, which are a splinter [fragment] of the old gymnasia, only with a new labour phraseology.
Clubs of various sorts, sportsmen’s circles, leagues, etc., they only testify that the school is not adapted to forging economy, quality, for which they fight. Evidently, in the school only tribute is paid to some sort of official conventionality. It is necessary to raise up the movement for economic initiativeness. It is necessary to raise up a struggle in which precisely those social elements would be brought up about whom we mentioned above. Necessary is the organisation of special societies, in which economically-initiative elements would unite. Only on the base of their economically-initiative unification does there arise a new, effective culture, [the one] needed by us. And, of course, a dry official report about any sort of victories in the unfolding of the Nizhny Novgorod fair, about the immeasurable difficulties which an expedition on Spitsbergen had to live through, the account of a captain of a risky voyage across the Kara Sea, will do far more than the most frightful book of Mayne Reid and, of course, far more than contemporary pedagogical methods in our schools. They will call forth an enormous quantity of imitators, they will summon towards uninterrupted economic victories, and the school, under the influence of all this, must gradually regenerate [be reborn], and bring up within itself all that organisational-volitional [thing] which exists in this economic organisation.1
1Mayne Reid (1818–1883), Irish-American author of frontier and adventure novels, enormously popular with Russian boys from the 1860s onwards.
§ 11. To the youth
Youth at the present time runs about with [fusses over] particular slogans. These slogans are clear to it only formally. Various sorts of NOT [Scientific Organisation of Labour], time, rapidity, family, etc. This may turn out to be the most soulless occupation, for it is impossible by a purely ideological path to create an organisational movement. It must be conducted, firstly, on the base of serious exercises, and entirely real ones, accessible to each and every one in our democratic country. Secondly, it must be connected with that cultural-economic work which is being conducted by our state. Therefore it is necessary for youth to unite in parallel with the economic unifications, into such corporations as would pose exercises, striving towards a definite economic victory, a risky economic manoeuvre, a most difficult organisational task.
Alongside abstract literature on the organisation of production, it is now necessary to set [them] before certain pages of our living history; it is necessary to show how in his time some Ivan IV had his Stroganov, who laid colonisational paths into Siberia. It is necessary to recall Yermak, who laid paths into unexplored wilds.
Peter I, Catherine II, … the Potemkins, the Demidovs and others must be placed before us as an example of colonisers. The whole of history must be shaken through. To recall that already under Catherine II a grandiose canal of the Siberian rivers was begun, to this day not yet finished. Attention must be turned to those summoning [rallying] attempts which ended in victory — in the creation of the Siberian route, and together with this to recall those enormous cadres of various Dutchmen, Germans, Frenchmen, Bulgarians, Greeks, who together with our masters occupied themselves with the colonisation of ruinous [god-forsaken] places. Our great self-taught men must be drawn in here too, who contrived simultaneously with the Western Europeans to invent the best steam engines, to give splendid technical systems. It is necessary everywhere to remind that our hard-labour [katorga], our exile, our gold-seekers — all this was an enormous chain of colonisers who created Siberia, who carried culture to the north of Russia and into distant Turkestan.
Perhaps here a certain [known] patriotism will also be needed, one which would point to the Siberian route, laid through impassable taiga by stubborn men, who attached to cultural life a country equal in its width to America! It is necessary to tell how here in the north, alongside the most savage bear, steamships of the latest American type magnificently live side by side.
In a word, among us there must begin a sort of revolutionary-economic romanticism, leading to the feat, leading to victory.
§ 12. Training
Working and studying youth must master the catalogue of cultural Installation; it must take it along with itself.
To take along with oneself is possible only by stubborn exercise, by training.
Training along three lines: regime, labour, organisation.
The regime Installation (everyday life) is closer and more accessible for everyone. The record (accounting) of expended time, the record of expended means will at once give a frame and accustom [one] to planning. Morning gymnastics will give the Installation for the day, as prayer once did among believers. With persistence in these simple things, like an automaton, the alimentary, respiratory and labour regime will arrive.
The labour Installation of working youth is given by the factory. Studying and other youth can take it at once, if they compose study-druzhinas [squads]. A couple of instruments and a knowing man will always be found in the contemporary labour environment.
The organisational Installation will already result from the first two. But it will be in need of vital fire.
The fire of trials, of vital training, we shall pose as the right to recognition, the right to life.
Cultural Installation must be placed under the enemy’s fire; then everyone will briskly tighten up [pull themselves together], then the surest count of hours and minutes will begin.
Our enemy — backwardness, destitution, costly inept production.
Our cities are called upon to be conductors of culture. But they are all still gaping idly. They cannot yet give a cheap commodity for the village and set it spinning upon the wheels of culture.
The moat [ditch] between city and village still gapes. By knack, organisation and will the village must be taken. Not to denounce it, but to go, to take, to attain.
Let us go into the village as revolutionary colonisers.
To go into the village does not mean that one must necessarily break through there, onto the land itself. One can also work in the city for the village. But only
in a special manner.
Go into the workshop, into the factory. Take there the simplest work, the least complex operation. And set up well within it the instrument, the fixtures [jigs], the rapid feed of material, and attain acceleration in the work. Count up your achievement, consolidate it and spread it already upon a broad base.
But it is necessary also literally to go into the village.
This campaign already exists, it has been declared.
But one must go there with armament. The armament is outlined by the programme. But what the village especially awaits from us is mounter’s [mounting] work.
The village, almost all of it — solid untouched virgin soil. Hot work in summer and stagnation in winter do not dispose the village towards feverish searches for culture and technique. But if a city man with knack [сноровистый: handy, deft] comes there, the village throws itself upon him.
A keen eye, shrewdness, labour habit and organisational knack in the village can perform miracles.
The setting-up of a smithy, the adjustment of inventory repair, the straightening of tools and instruments, the iron brace [clamp] in wooden equipment, the planning-out of the vegetable-garden and thousands of small but demonstrative affairs — here is the programme of mounting. Still more conclusive and instructive for the peasant will be works on the planting of culture in virgin soil, in empty, abandoned places or those that have got out of hand.
Here it will be possible to pass off as method every cleverly built stove, cupboard, press, a calculated weeding of the vegetable-garden, a watering. And if one can risk using the river for a dam and a small turbine, this will be the best seed-bed [nursery] of culture.
§ 13. Tactics
The summer journeys of studying and working youth must be made into reconnaissances in the village. And after the reconnaissance a close-knit small group in the city arms itself with small but valuable cultural-technical equipment and travels, let us say, the next summer again into the village, but already as colonisers.
The installers of culture must know precisely this: that they have two belts of time [time-zones]: one — preparation in the city, the other — the carrying out of the affair in the village.
There is nothing more gripping for youth than this city preparation for the campaign: the young man inoculates [grafts] himself diligently, day after day, with regime, he exercises himself in organisational knack if only within the limits of his room, his lesson, his barracks, his institution, his factory operation, he practically assimilates the ABC of labour abilities and of mounting, and along the way he arms himself with portable literature in the form of reference books.
This is the entire preparation for the trial, for the fire, for the battle with darkness and backwardness.
Labour — your force.
