Our Practical Methodology
If it were necessary to formulate briefly our combat tasks of influence [воздействие: action-upon], then they would have to be expressed thus: the inoculation [grafting] of Labour Culture; to express this quite popularly one can [do so] in the words: the transmission of labour holding-out [выдержка].
Russia differs from the West precisely in this, that she is either lazy or elementarily impulsive, her population on the whole yields little persistence, little labour stubbornness. This trait of character stands out most vividly at the dawn of human culture, in the epoch of the savage state, where as the inciting motive for labour there serves either immediate pleasantness, or hunger, or mortal danger.
We should like, to the measure of our forces, with our apparatus of influence to implant [drive in] the culture of labour as such, independently of its pleasantness; rather we should like to show that with this culture is joined a certain severity, a discharging [разряжение] of immediate satisfaction, that which may be called labour training.
Below we print the first specimen [sample] of such training agitation.
How to Work
Whether we work at the office desk, whether we file with a file in the fitters’ shop, or, finally, plough the earth — everywhere it is necessary to create labour holding-out and gradually to make it a habit.
Here are the first basic rules for every labour:
1. Before taking up work, it is necessary to think it all through, to think it through so that in the head there should finally take shape a model of the finished work and the entire order of labour grips [приёмы: techniques, methods]. If it is impossible to think everything through to the end, then think through the main landmarks, and think through the first parts of the work thoroughly.
2. Not to take up work until all the working instruments and all the fixtures [appliances, devices] for the work are prepared.
3. At the work-place (machine-tool, workbench, table, floor, earth) there must be nothing superfluous, so as not to poke about in vain, not to fuss, and not to search for the needed among the unneeded.
4. All instruments and fixtures must be laid out in a definite order, if possible installed [установленном: also set, fixed] once and for all, so that it is possible to find all of this blindly [наобум: at random, without looking].
5. Work must never be taken up abruptly, all at once, one must not tear off from the spot, but enter into work gradually [little by little]. The head and the body will afterwards get going on their own and start working; but if one sets about it all at once, then soon, as is said, one will both cut oneself down [зарезать: slaughter] and 'botch' [запороть: flog to ruin] the work. After an abrupt initial burst the labourer soon gives out; and he himself will experience fatigue and will spoil the work.
6. In the course of work it is sometimes necessary to bear down with intensified effort: either in order to overpower something out of the ordinary, or to take something jointly, as an artel [артельно]. In such cases one must not bear down at once, but first fit oneself in [adjust], all the body and the mind must be tuned [настроить: set], one must, so to speak, charge up [зарядиться: as a battery is charged]; further, one must lightly try out, feel for the required force, and only after this bear down.
7. Work must be as even as possible, so that there be no flood and ebb [tide]; work in the heat of the moment, in fits [attacks, bouts], spoils both the man and the work.
8. The seating [посадка: fit, as of a machine part] of the body during work must be such that it is both convenient to work and at the same time forces are not expended on the completely unnecessary holding of the body on the legs. If possible one must work sitting. If it is impossible to sit, the legs must be held set apart; so that the leg put forward or to the side does not tear from its place, a brace [укрепа: fastening, support] must be arranged.
9. During work it is obligatory to rest. In heavy work one must rest more often and if possible sit, in light work the rests are rare but uniform [evenly spaced].
10. During the work itself one must not eat, not drink tea, drink in an extreme case only for the quenching of thirst; nor must one smoke, it is better to smoke in the work breaks than during the work itself.
11. If the work does not go, then do not get heated, but better make a break, come to one's senses [think again], and set about it anew, once more quietly; even deliberately slow down, in order to hold oneself out [выдержать: hold out, restrain oneself].
12. During the work itself, especially when the business does not go, one must interrupt the work, bring the work-place into order, lay away the instruments and material carefully, sweep away the litter and set about the work anew, and once more gradually, but evenly.
13. One must not in work tear oneself away for another business, apart from what is necessary in the work itself.
14. There is a very bad habit, after the successful carrying-out of work, of showing it at once; here it is obligatory to 'endure' [вытерпеть: suffer it out], so to speak, to grow accustomed to success, to crush [crumple] one's satisfaction, to make it internal; otherwise another time, in the case of failure, there will result a 'poisoning' of the will and the work will become loathsome.
15. In the case of complete failure one must look lightly on the business and not become disordered [расстраиваться: literally fall out of tune, be upset], begin the work anew, as if for the first time, and conduct oneself as indicated in the 11th rule.
16. On the completion of work everything must be tidied away; both the work, and the instruments, and the work-place; everything put in a definite place, so that, setting about the work anew, it be possible to find everything, and so that the work itself not become loathsome.
