But what, then, is to be done with the theory of the treatment [curing] of narrow places [bottlenecks]?

We do not deny it, but it is a particular method of the application of forces within that general dynamic solution which suggests itself from our preceding propositions. Its elementary character and demonstrability will come only in the light of precisely that shining-through [transillumination] of narrow places which is given by the taut chains of those requirements that are inexorably dictated from the upper, subsequent links. But we wish to say more. The liquidation of narrow places must not always be achieved by the methods of direct unstitching [расшивка: clearing] of the narrow places themselves. If one looks at the flow from the standpoint of its dynamic force, then the liquidation of narrow places must come not at the cost merely of the direct unstitching of narrow places, but at the cost of an increase of the dynamic force of the flow. Speaking of this dynamics, we have in mind not the simple quantitative expression of the output or passage of production and semi-production through the links and cycles of the flow, but an increase of the organisational tension of this flow, a tension the force of which must inevitably break through and “unstitch” the narrow places. To suppose that the unstitching of narrow places is an independent method means simply to repeat that “heave-ho!” [навались: all lean on it] which manifests itself so primitively in the “diligence” and administrative zeal of many directors. When a subsequent cycle, in relation to a preceding one, by its requirements and constant verification strains [tenses] the energy of the preceding shop, [when] the organised introduction into this preceding cycle of servicing forces (great and small) sharply raises the entire culture of the shop, makes it more cultured, transfigures it — then indeed that which yesterday seemed a difficulty, a narrow place, is today resorbed [dissolved away] by the whole tension of this new culture: the shop gives a picture of the greatest organisational readiness, order, equipment.

From this we also draw the conclusion that, in the offensive against old forms, it is always necessary to prefer the subsequent cycle to the preceding one, and consequently the concluding cycle to the initial one as well. Of course, at the beginning of the offensive it is not great output that at once prevails [weighs]; what prevails is the well-formed [стройный: in-formation, harmonious] order of the flow’s course, while great output will appear as the result of the tension of the servicing forces, which place all the objective and subjective forces of the cycle before the fact of readiness: only by work, and no references to objective conditions!1

1довлеет is used here in the common early-Soviet sense “dominates, weighs upon” (strictly, the old word means “suffices”).

In the light of these propositions of ours, it will be a miss to take hold at once of the middle cycles. A short-lived success here will be equivalent to a “heave” [навал: piling-on] and to a loss of orientation in organisational dynamics: for one must work at once “on two sides” [diminutive in the Russian: little sides] — both demand from the preceding cycle and please the subsequent one — and all the same have no exact correlation of the one to the other, since the subsequent cycle does not yet dispose of exactly determined requirements.

The experience of work at CIT [ЦИТ, Central Institute of Labour] Factory No. 1, with its serial production, and at “Sharikopodshipnik,”¹ with its super-mass production, has demonstratively shown that our work in the final production cycle (the assembly one), creating in it a new organisational order, at once exerts its sucking-in influence upon the entire flow. The commander of the assembly shop is twice an administrator: he is the administrative power in his own shop, but he is also the bearer of dynamic power throughout the entire flow of cycles. Of course, the force of his administrative-technical influence upon the preceding cycles is the greater, the closer they are to his cycle, and the converse. Having occupied the positions of the 4th cycle, he acts more strongly upon the 3rd than upon the 2nd cycle, upon the 2nd more strongly than upon the 1st. But this diminishing progression of influence he can increase by achieving in the preceding cycles an increase of the servicing forces — small and great. The more strongly this servicing is expressed in the preceding cycles, the more freely, the more fruitfully his “counter-campaign” [встречный поход: oncoming march] will proceed in the direction of the offensive motion of the flow, the more tensely and productively the flow will move.

And so we have arrived at that moment of our exposition when it is possible to formulate, already in its full integrity [wholeness], the general picture of our organisational invasion [incursion] of the flow.

Giving the application of our organisational forces from the final cycle towards the initial one (the 2nd path), we first of all select in the final cycle, in accordance with the 1st path (selection of objects), a narrow strip [band] of application, mobilise towards it the small servicing forces (the 3rd path) and, unfolding the mounting-Installation [монтажно-установочный: assembly and setting-up] shop on the base of the auxiliary shops (the 4th path), begin partially to suck the 3rd cycle into the field of our action-upon [effect]. We obtain in the 4th cycle a certain parallelogram of forces in the direction of the further seizure of its width, conquering the entire thickness of objects (Fig. 6).

To the degree that we fortify our production positions in the 4th cycle, we begin in the 3rd cycle to unfold the same scheme of action-upon as in the 4th, exerting our sucking-in influence upon the 2nd; then the very same thing with the 2nd and 1st cycles.

And the general picture of our organisational effort will be a parallelogram of forces through the entire thickness of the cycles. Meanwhile we unfold the mounting-Installation shop ever more strongly and, hurling the auxiliary shops into action, strengthening the administrative regime cycle by cycle and, finally, over the entire flow of cycles, already set all the cycles to high speeds. The Bureau of Production Preparation, taking as its basis the CIT method of projecting [design], backs up all the graphs [schedules] of the flow with graphs of the work of the small and great servicing forces in relation to the cycles.

The application of forces and the fullness of the flow reach their apogee, and every further increase of energy will already depend upon new mounting-Installation means…
