The compact with the gods, or with God, is the foundation of the life of human societies of the old religious type. The whole world is regarded as a society, and therefore alliance with the strongest elements of the world-society — the rulers of the elements — is valued terribly. Laws and customs are hallowed not only by the compact between men but by the compact, the "covenant", of men with the deities. Religion is interwoven with real life inseparably. If society develops, if a upheaval is ripening in its depths, if it disintegrates into warring classes — all this must necessarily be reflected in the sphere of religion, must take on a religious colouring. The exponents of the contending tendencies in societies of a secular character are orators and publicists; in religious societies they are called prophets.
The prophet demands a revision of the compact with God, and such a revision is always also a revision of social relations. In the prophet there is expressed a new understanding of the truth about nature and society on the part of new, or grown and strengthened, elements of society. But prophets ordinarily appeal to the past; they call their reforms a return to the primordial truth, and the doctrines and customs they consider pernicious they try to depict as pernicious innovations.
Only at the higher stages of social development does tradition lose its charm and prophets begin to be conscious of the novelty of their truths and to speak of a new covenant. But even here a connection with the past is carefully established. Jesus said that he came to fulfil, and not to abolish, the law of the old covenant. Mohammed leaned on Moses and Jesus. The Eternal Gospel of the Holy Spirit, which arose in the thirteenth century, leaned on them too, though it claimed the role of the third, most recent covenant.[E19]
For a long time publicistic writing had the form of prophecy, both in the pre-Christian and in the Christian world. Here prophecy fell into two types: true and epigraphic.
The prophets were not in the proper sense foretellers; they were so in the same spirit as modern publicists and sociologists. The definition of the prophetic manner of predicting, given by Darmesteter, can be applied to Condorcet, to Saint-Simon or to Marx. "The prophet sees the future in its most general outlines, because, having created for himself a definite philosophical conception of history, he knows certainly the destinies of his people, according to the path that people enters upon. The general movement of facts and ideas with their necessary remote results — that is the only thing that interests him: the detail, the concrete fact, naturally escapes him; he leaves the prediction of those to charlatans." 18
But sometimes we meet in the prophetic books unusually detailed predictions: a sign that the corresponding book, or passage of a book, was written post factum, but for the sake of lending force to publicistic ideas was illuminated with the halo of prediction, and sometimes also with some ancient and great prophetic name. The great prophets always stand at boundaries, amid seething social struggle. They give it its watchword, generalise it, peer into the future with an eagle's gaze, scourge the enemies of their idea, console its supporters.
Two causes make the prophet a mysterious and hieratic personality: first, as we have already said, in a religious society no revolution or broad reform can take place which would not also be a revolution in the sphere of relations to God. Consequently the prophet is obliged to speak in the name of God. Social, political or moral demands put forward not as the demands of some mighty deity are unthinkable and impotent in a religious society; their appearance always signifies the fall of the theological foundations of society in general.
Secondly, the prophet psychologically perceives himself as an instrument of a higher will. Systematic thought and investigation are alien to man in his childhood and adolescence; man in that epoch does not think but poetically creates: conjectures, juxtapositions flash suddenly in his head; he takes by inspiration, by nervous exaltation. He does not think but sees trains of symbolic images; he does not teach but proclaims, sometimes sings. The state of nervous exaltation, of inspiration reaching to hallucinations and seizures, the state of clairvoyance, is above all else for the prophet: as by lightning there is illuminated before him at that time what had slowly ripened in his consciousness on ordinary weekdays. Poets still believe in inspirations as a kind of summons, or a kind of visitation — it is a fact of their inner experience; the publicists of the old society — the prophets — were recruited from poetic natures, not scientific ones. The phlegmatic scholar could not yet have had significance; hysterical-epileptic natures (all inspiration is a light epilepsy, a flooding of the brain with blood) were the leaders of young humanity. Inspiration is abnormal; it is a lofty disease. It is no wonder that the sick and the inspired were poorly distinguished by young man. 19
The prophets — publicists, teachers and revolutionaries — came out of the milieu that stood opposed to the official priesthood as popular, democratic bearers of truth; that milieu was made up of hysterics, charlatans, hypnotists, soothsayers and quacks, who went in crowds or singly from place to place. They predicted in a trance, spoke in enigmatic images, grimaced, played tricks, themselves but dimly understanding where their deception ended and where truth began. The common folk looked upon them as men of a higher order, to whom secrets were open. The priests looked askance at these usurpers of their revenues and their influence. When the popular masses, driven to despair or sensing their own strength, rose on their hind legs and came out under their own banners against the summits of the social pyramid — the God-possessed put themselves at their head, and out of their dark and pitiful milieu there emerged true prophets, political and spiritual leaders. Of course a prophet might emerge suddenly out of another milieu as well, but the marks of possession, the poetically inspired character, had necessarily to be proper to him. Poetic genius, the super-measure ability to synthesise, to unite vagrant new feelings, ideas and desires, to grasp the language of facts, the capacity to lend brilliance and heat to the new doctrine thus obtained — remains a necessary mark for the prophets of the new, secular society too; I mean for the great leaders — revolutionaries. But no longer believing in magism in social upheavals, having come right up to the understanding of reform and revolution as labour acts which for their success must rest upon cognition of social forces and tendencies, we put to our prophets not only the demands of passion, energy, the heat of love, poetic imagery of speech, the capacity to create watchwords — we demand of them also cold reflection, the restraint of the objective investigator. Can the two be united in one person? Yes. For we have been present at such a miracle: we were taught by the greatest prophet of the world — Marx.
The upheaval in prophecy is not limited merely to the preponderance of systematic investigation and reflection beneath the stormy inspiration. The self-criticism of the leader and the clear spirit of the new humanity do not permit us to see in the new prophet a mysterious and supernatural phenomenon. The leader, the genius, remains divine in the beauty and grandeur of his experiences, but we already know that he is not an instrument of God but the ripe fruit of humanity, engendered by the long efforts of thought and feeling and by a happy confluence of biologically favourable circumstances. Nor does the prophet need any longer to appeal to God, for the new society is no longer built upon compacts with him. On the whole, faith in the immeasurably highest value of the compact with God has definitively fallen; class calculations, class struggle and class agreements within society, and international ones outside it, either come forward directly in all their nakedness, or hide beneath the cover of reasonableness, purposiveness, objective rationality, the common good and the like.
But this does not mean that the great upheavals, the great ideas that reflect them, and the bearers of those ideas — the prophets — as also the masses they inspire, cease to be a religious phenomenon. Where self-sacrifice in the name of a great goal becomes an ordinary phenomenon — there the religious spirit hovers over men's heads, there reigns the spirit of the species, the striving towards the great conquests of the future, there individuals are bound to one another in the impulse towards the coming happiness and perfection, there man makes the effort to conquer his own limitation and to create God out of himself and his brothers.
Lassalle comes forward as a true prophet when he says: "There is nothing that could set a higher seal of dignity and morality upon a class than the consciousness that it is destined to dominion, that it must raise the principle of its class to the height of the principle of its age, make its idea the guiding idea of the whole of society and thus transform that society after its own image and likeness. Workers! the high world-historical honour of your destiny must take hold of all your thoughts. Neither the vices of the oppressed nor the idle amusements of parasites suit you any longer. You are the rock upon which the church of the present must be erected!"[E20]
And this cold positivist, Marx! Read the lines of his recently published letter to Meyer, that groan escaping from a great breast, the groan of a prophet's loving heart: "Why have I not written to you? Because I was on the edge of the grave. I had consequently to use every moment of working capacity to finish the work to which I had given my health, my happiness in life and my family. Are any further explanations needed? I laugh at the so-called practical men and their wisdom. Whoever wants to live the life of an ox can of course turn his back on the torments of humanity and concern himself with his own advantage. But I should count it the most impractical thing of all to die without finishing my book, at least in manuscript."[E21]
Religious are those moments when a man, or a crowd, or a class rises high above itself, in order to live in the ages, to live and die in the light of the desired future, as a soldier of a single army of conquering labour. A great epoch is being lived through; the proletariat is unfolding colossal revolutionary forces, and prophets will come to continue that long line of torches which from Moses and Zoroaster stretches in a series, lighting the separate stages of our species' difficult road and pointing in the distance to the majestic rainbow, the gates into the kingdom of reason, justice and beauty. Whatever the prophet's language, his superstitions, his errors — they are all made kin by a stately idealism and a hot love of life and of that truth for which life passionately thirsts.
The Moral Elevation of the Gods
The compact of man with God as an external and enormous force carries with it a mass of the irrational — sacrifices, fasts, absurd rites, sometimes rational long ago and now bereft of their meaning, sometimes arising from the very beginning out of some error. But the further we go, the more God recedes into the background as a miracle-worker, as a helper in the struggle for life, and the more he comes forward as the guardian of men's compacts among themselves. Clans merge into tribes, tribes into peoples, and the guardian of the compact and of the gradually unfolding legislation becomes this or that deity. The specific features of the sky-god, the sun-god, the thunder-god are effaced, while the features of the god of justice stand out brightly. Of a particular justice, of course — the legality of the given tribe. In progressing societies the laws are rationalised and acquire a constitutional character — that is, the character of a compact not only between the clans and tribes composing it but also between classes. This is perhaps not so much a compact as a compromise, a modus vivendi, in the name of avoiding upheavals, always advantageous to the ruling classes, but experienced by the other classes too as an order more bearable than the calamities of immediate revolt. The guardians of this order are the gods. They are proclaimed the source and the force of the state. They it is who stand on guard over morality — that is, over the system of rules summarising the common life in relations that do not fit into the laws. Class struggle, when it is at all conscious, always takes on the character of a struggle for justice, for justice is the political and economic order most answering to the interests of this or that class. If the aristocracy grows — it strives to violate the established order, and often comes forward under the banner of new gods, as for instance the Israelite aristocracy with its attachment to the lordly and luxuriously cultured god Baal.
In these cases the old order and the old god are idealised by the democracy; it works at elaborating its own justice, and the god acquires the lofty features of philanthropy and egalitarianism. The vacillating or directly hostile position of the priests of the old religion, who do not dare to take the side of the trampled people, leads the people to a contempt for the cult and to a purely moral and social — that is, "spiritual" — interpretation of the deity.
A growing democracy likewise violates the compacts and comes forward under the banner of new gods; then the aristocracy passes to the defensive and punishes "godlessness". The gods of democracy deny the old ways; they appeal to the feeling and reason of the strengthened man-worker, and therefore they are always a step forward in the sense of the spiritual purity of the deity, of freedom from rites and dogmas that have become senseless. Such a character had Buddhism and early Christianity. But very often democracy in its growth carries merely a purified interpretation of the old deities and interprets their will anew. All reformations had this character. If they went to the end, the break between the old and the new image of God became so deep that the deity disintegrated into two gods. The reformers of the thirteenth century set the Holy Spirit against Christ, just as the Christian reformation of Judaism barely covered over the antagonism of Father and Son. In the age of the reformation of Christianity connected with the name of Luther, the extreme democratic sects again brought forward both breaks — the Jewish Jehovah was even declared to be the devil, while at the same time others rejected Christ for the sake of the Holy Spirit, which bloweth where it listeth.[E22] Such phenomena prove the sharpening of the social struggle.
Democracy in its revolutionary periods most of all furthers the moral purification and elevation of the deity. Jehovah and the Christian God — the Good — were created by the popular masses in revolutionary struggle. The people's aspirations to freedom, equality and brotherhood, reaching to communism, become the promptings of God. God becomes the ideal of social justice. But it goes without saying that with the establishment of the new order the most revolutionary god is immediately transformed into a conservative or a moderate liberal. The new aristocracy, or the old one adapted, works over the god of the revolutionary period. A laughably clear example is the striving of the ideologues of the Italian monarchy to tame and make constitutional Mazzini's god, the god of the last Italian democratic revolution. The chief care of the adapters of revolutionary deities consists in rendering the ideal metaphysical of which the popular deity was the bearer, in replacing the ideal of justice on earth with justice in heaven. Simple and convenient. The deity does not fall morally; it happily reconciles itself to the injustices on earth: Justice becomes the crown of reward for him who more meekly bears the yoke of injustice during his brief earthly life. Thus the very moral height of God becomes a weapon in the hands of exploiters and swindlers.
As for the transition from polytheism to monotheism, in essence only monotheists themselves can feel reverence before that process. Monotheism is led to by monarchy, by the merging of peoples into one state and of states into one world-society. A tangled syncretism — a bazaar of the deities of the whole world, jostling and mutually excluding one another — on the one hand; and on the other the work of thought upon adapting this chaos to the relative unity of society and nature established by a widened experience: those are the roots of monotheism. One cannot omit from this the natural inclination of men of thought towards philosophical monism, and also national pride striving to proclaim its tribal god the god of all gods. The Jewish national god, thanks to an amazing confluence of historical circumstances, arrived in time upon the world arena of the gods — and moreover in the form of a democratic god, protector of the oppressed. For us, in this process, which we shall describe in more detail, it is far more important that the "one god" had these features than that he was "one". All the more since his unity did not hold for long.
Scientific monism in the study of nature is equally close to and equally far from monotheism and from polytheism. Polytheism passes easily into pantheism: the representation of nature as a host of spirits and gods is soon supplemented by the representation of fate reigning over the existence and the mutual struggle of these anthropomorphised forces of nature, of eternal necessity. This world-view gives as easy a transition to scientific monism — that is, to the conception of the world as unity in infinite diversity — as does monotheism, which makes the one world the creation of one God. This God is afterwards identified by scientific thought with the aggregate of the laws of nature, and then absorbed and dissolved by the world as an order immanent in it. Scientific monism is equally far from mono- and polytheism, in so far as the mysterious representation in general is alien to it. Even pantheism, if it gives moral, man-like features to the world-order, if it tries to depict it as a moral world-order, differs toto coelo from scientific monism. The concept of an iron Moira, or the deistic concept of God as a physical arranger of the world mechanism who has withdrawn from affairs once the building was finished, is closer to science than such pantheism. Thus from the standpoint of science monotheism is by no means a step forward. Nor is it a step forward in the moral respect.
Monotheism makes God solely responsible for the whole world, and consequently for the evil undoubtedly existing in it. This has tangled religious thought beyond measure. Repeatedly men have returned to dualism — now in the form of acknowledging a black god confronting a white one, now in the form of acknowledging the "evil will" of the free human spirit. All these are limitations of absolute monotheism: with pure monotheism a high human morality is utterly irreconcilable.
