One of the results of social differentiation (the division of labour first, the disintegration into classes afterwards) was the appearance of the independent figure of the priest. The priest takes upon himself intercourse with the gods, mediation between them and men. He knows how to transmit human entreaties to the gods in due form. And this becomes ever less possible for the layman, for the gods understand, or willingly listen to, only the ancient language, the language of the ancestors — for they are themselves our ancestors, or the ancestors of kings. The priest also knows how to bring sacrifice as it should be brought. The science of correct prayer and correct sacrifice, the knowledge of incantations and rites, constitutes a whole complex course of magism — that is, of direct influence upon the gods (the wills guiding nature) instead of feeble labour — influence, so to speak, upon the body of nature. Without faith in magism man would feel himself terribly helpless.
The magician always has a thousand loopholes for evading responsibility for the failure of his manipulations; but in case of success he can become a downright miracle-worker.
But originally the priests hold in their hands not only the magical experience of the tribe but also its hygiene and medicine, half rational and mixed with magism, and often the whole of young science. Thus the priest is the learned intellectual of olden time. The chief role of the priest in Egypt, India and Persia is that of the scholar, whose knowledge, however, is kept in corporative secrecy, mixed with superstitious rites, myths and dogmas, and hallowed by a special halo of super-rationality.
The priest early learns to draw profit from his advantageous position. Where the master's sword does not reach, there the priest's spiritual power still reaches. The master can hew bodies to pieces; the priest poisons the soul, educating man in habits of thought corresponding to the interests of his caste. He does not like to quarrel with the military caste; he submits to it as its honoured subject, or rules over it as over his strongest assistant.
If the priestly caste develops, if its intellect widens and its experience grows, the priest himself loses his reverent fear of tradition. He does not break with it only because he has no wish whatever to shake his authority, established over centuries and grown with tenacious roots into men's brains. But he himself puts into the dogmas, myths and rites a new content, one reconciling the contradictions he has noticed, better answering the knowledge he has acquired and the sharpness of his mind, refined in reflection. Thus the priests develop the esoteric, secret doctrine, where the garments of the old myths conceal new truths.
Esoteric knowledge sometimes breaks through its shell, flings open the tightly locked doors, and comes out into the streets of cities and the high roads with a new preaching. But reformers of this kind, traitors to their order, do not always succeed. The old priesthood rises against them as against renegades, while the laymen are often too little prepared to receive new truths. The reform of Zoroaster apparently had precisely this form… In part this may be said of Luther's reform too… In other cases the prophets drew widely upon the esoteric wisdom of the priests without belonging to their class, being the natural products of broad social displacements of forces. Examples: Buddha, Mohammed.
The splitting of the priest's religious service into the esoteric and the exoteric is already a kind of deception. To justify his conscience in it, the priest must have recourse either to a cynical acknowledgement of the purely political, self-interested necessity of keeping the common people, the lay folk, in darkness of ignorance and superstition, or, in the manner of the Grand Inquisitor, to assuring himself that superstition is the only food accessible to coarse minds, and that truth is hidden from them for their own good.
Indeed the esotericism of the priests can arrive at complete freethinking, atheism and blasphemy. But the priest continues to be conscious of the possibility of his social mission: to maintain order — that is, the unpunished exploitation of the labouring masses by the aristocracy and by the priesthood itself.
The priesthood of our own time has long since reached this stage of development in the persons of its sharpest minds. A whole series of popes understood perfectly the political abyss of Christianity, in which those popes did not believe a groat's worth. The more limited priests, sincerely believing in the truth of their dogmas and the power of their rites, are in this a weapon in the hands of a politicising church. Ruskin, a believing man and a Christian, wrote the following lines without hesitation:
"The whole essence of our national religion lies in the performance of religious rites and in the teaching of soporific truths, if not of downright lies, which keep the popular masses in their black labour while we live at our pleasure."
Needless to say, governments and ruling classes, even though they have long since ceased to believe themselves, value the priest for these services and by no means dare to undertake a complete unmasking of the "soporific truths". It seems the priests hate no one with such force as two freethinking Frenchmen — Voltaire and Renan. In the eyes of the orthodox these are servants of Antichrist. But while rejecting the very essence of the Christian religion, both of them upheld it as a triumphant social institution.
Voltaire says of this: "The true and chief reason why belief in God is necessary is, in my opinion, the conviction that for the common good a rewarding and punishing God is necessary. Without such a God we should remain in our misfortunes without hope, in vice without remorse. Whoever admits that belief in God holds even a few men back from crime admits that this belief ought to be accepted by all humanity."
To this let us add another reflection of the great freethinker: "The people are always coarse and dull; they are oxen, who need a yoke, a drover and fodder… It seems to me necessary that there should be ignorant people. If you were a landowner as I am, you would agree with the following proposition of mine: when the rabble begins to reason — all is lost."
And here are the opinions of the sweetest Renan, so ardent a defender of the freedom of scientific thought, expressed in the preface to his book The Apostles: "let us make use of the freedom of the sons of God, but let us beware of becoming accomplices in that lowering of virtue with which the weakening of Christianity would threaten our society. What should we become without it? What could replace such schools of seriousness and piety as Saint-Sulpice, such charitable brotherhoods as the Sisters of Mercy? How not to be horrified by the pettiness and narrowness of heart ready to flood the world. Intellectually we differ from the defenders of positive religion, but in heart we are with them."[E18]
One can only say that Voltaire is franker, Renan more skilful. If the priesthood is still strong even now, it is by no means through positive services to humanity — which did after all take place in the flowering of the Eastern priesthood and in the European Middle Ages — but exclusively through its service to the class summit of society.
So-called positive religion is at present nothing but an instrument of enslavement, and the churches are organisations of enslavement. While not permitting anticlericalism to be substituted for our broad social struggle, we Social Democrats must not for a single minute forget that the priest is an implacable and serious enemy of the proletariat, and consequently of all humanity — an enemy who has not even the justification of the bourgeois, the capitalist, who is after all still necessary for socialism as the force preparing its ground. The historical role of the priest has long been wholly harmful.
