The Significance of Primitive Religion for Man

Translated by S. Alexander Laurent

1) The peculiar fatalism, or harmonism, which supposes that all the facts of cultural history were rational for their time and necessary from the point of view of development, must be rejected as a kind of metaphysics. The social destinies of humanity unfold with the same blind purposelessness and wastefulness as purely elemental processes. Man's conscious governance of his own destinies is a matter for the future.

But of course, if by no means everything in human history was necessary in the teleological sense, if much was superfluous or even pernicious from the point of view of development, then to make up for it everything down to the minutest detail was necessary from the genetic point of view — that is, absolutely determined and inevitable. That is why there is nothing more naive than grief or approval concerning the past, and constructions of the history that ought to have been. Not only the religious problem itself but its theological solution were inevitable. Criticism in the proper sense of the word is out of place here! One can only lay bare the path by which men came to an error inevitable for them, and point out wherein this error in fact furthered and wherein it harmed man's development.

Nietzsche remarks that the imperfection of the sense-organs was on the whole advantageous for man. He explains this paradox by pointing out that the generalisation of the individual into a general concept became possible only thanks to the impossibility, for primitive man, of grasping the whole abyss of differences between one man and another, one tree and another, and so on. A somewhat vague general outline, an indistinct similarity, lay at the foundation of human logic. Otherwise the living being would have lost itself in the differences, which would have screened similarity from it, and it would not have worked out general reactions for a whole class of objects or phenomena at once. Whether this is so or not, errors and illusions undoubtedly often play a preservative role. Primitive man — a child — lived in a fairy-tale world; he peopled nature with man-like beings. Of course relations between people (of different tribes) were not such that the representation of a man-like being equalled the representation of a friendly being. And besides the "behaviour" of predatory beasts and implacable phenomena of nature at once suggested the thought that spirits and gods were far from good-natured beings, that they were rather inclined to torment man for guilt and without guilt. And yet with them a compact was possible, as with men of other tribes. The worship of the crocodile, the tiger, the wind, the sun, the thunder, was in essence a more or less systematised attempt to enter into a compact with these beings, to extend to these most mighty allies as well the network of mutual "covenants" that bound clans and tribes to one another.

The compacts often led to nothing; they were broken by the gods. But even here man was inclined to increase the capital of his hope, preferring gradually to assure himself that the gods very rarely, or never, break the compact with a pious, God-fearing man who performs all the rites. And the consciousness of the possibility of such a compact made life itself more possible; it hid, in man's infancy, from his already opening eyes the horror of his position, the horror of his abandonment amid blind and deaf, heartless and mindless, measureless elements.

The possibility of a compact — that is what followed from the mythically animistic interpretation of nature. This illusion led to a whole abyss of wild actions and absurdities, but it gave man confidence. Were it not for that, had man understood that what surrounded him was a desert alien to him, perhaps he would not at that time have borne the weight of that pessimism, and would have perished. The idea of losing the "covenant", of finding oneself outside the compact with the gods, always evoked in the mentally immature man a great horror. A compact with the gods is impossible as a compact of equals with equals: it is dependence. Therefore, approaching God and demanding something of him, men express by every sign their abasement and submission; besides which, gifts are made to the gods, tribute is paid, sacrifices are brought.

At first the relation to God is characterised by a certain simplicity still. A strong man is approached without bowing yet, asked without a tremor in the voice. In case of refusal a fight is perhaps possible. To the primitive mind of the savage of the commune, God appears stronger than man, but in the same way as, for instance, the crocodile or the tiger. Originally the spirit is probably a dead man, endowed, it is true, with many superhuman properties. If the representation of spirits other than human shades does arise, they are still thought of as fairly analogous. But society develops; chiefs appear, and at last kings. The society of spirits differentiates too — and there too appear spirit-kings, gods in the proper sense. Let them even be the ancestors of the reigning house: the distance between them and the king himself grows in proportion as the distance between the king and the aristocracy, and the aristocracy and the people, grows. There appears that "pathos of distance" which Nietzsche glorified and which is the vilest psychic trait of man, the most repulsive of all the socio-psychical diseases man has lived through.

The sacrifices become colossal. The old god was satisfied with food from the table — that was the hungry shade of a "dead brother". The new god, like the king, needs rivers of blood, hecatombs — more than that: to prove his submission further, man must sacrifice what is dearest to him; only then will the compact be firm. Self-castration and self-mortification before the face of God are constantly renewed, in token of one's devotion, for the sake of attaining favour. Of course the spread of this terrible custom beyond narrow sects would have led to the death of nations, and self-castration is replaced by circumcision, its softened sign. Long and widely the sacrifice of first-born children, of children in general, rages. The Jewish God, who has now turned into a silver-bearded loving Father of all, did not stay Jephthah's hand when he doomed to death the young daughter who knew not marriage. His ear was not softened by those songs she sang in the mountains with her friends, mourning her unwedded youth. How much blood and how many tears man drew from himself and from others in fulfilment of custom: the most majestic tragedy of the world, the Oresteia,[E15] has at its foundation the weeping, the sorrow and the wrath of the human heart around the sacrificial pyre of Iphigenia.

But the bloodthirsty kings and kinglets are outliving their time; an aristocratically constitutional or democratic order grows up again. Man gradually rises against the bloodthirstiness of the gods. He begins to value himself more, and the labour-power of another man, and human dignity in general. The gods are compelled to moderate their venality and gradually to exchange Isaacs for rams, rams for incense and flowers. The gods become vegetarians. They make a virtue of necessity, and the reform is ascribed to them themselves. But even here there are relapses. The Carthaginians in a difficult moment repented that they had fed the god on the flesh of slave children, and hurled hundreds of their own children into the glowing belly of Moloch.[E16]

But humanity has preserved an ironic memory of how it cheated the gods — in fairy tales. The solemn myths speak of an angel staying Abraham's hand, of Zeus's lightning on the heads of the man-eating Korybantes; but the fairy tale says something else. Formerly, at important buildings, compacts with the gods were renewed by human sacrifice. Afterwards it was decided that an animal was enough for the gods. And look — the bridges, towers and canals did not turn out the worse for it. The fairy tale substitutes Satan for God (Satan generally replacing the old gods in Christian fairy tales); about every old bridge, chuckling slyly, it tells of a hermit who bought from the devil the right to build a bridge for the first soul that should come to him; the hermit sent a great black cat across the bridge.[E16]

The Chinese and the Egyptians went further. The former sacrifice people… made of paper; the latter drew all their richest offerings… on the walls of temples and tombs. Thus man freed himself from the heavy tribute to the gods, but stubbornly preserved the very thought of the compact. And to this day they still promise to set candles before the saints and the Lord God, and burn incense. However, who knows? The great Pythagoras, who preached so divinely beautifully against bloody sacrifice, forgot, they say, his wise vegetarianism out of joy at the discovery of his famous "trousers" (the theorem on the right-angled triangle) and sacrificed a hundred bulls to the Muses. Do you think the nine beautiful sisters bathed in bull's blood or devoured such a mountain of roast meat? No, it was eaten in glory of the Muses — by the priests, those, as Nietzsche put it, "devourers of beefsteaks". If heaven now needs only a candle and some incense, it nonetheless loves those who sacrifice to the clergy and the monasteries more substantial goods. Sacrifices to the gods, sacrifices to the priests — all these are sacrifices made by man to an illusion dear to him and necessary to him in the early stages: the possibility of a compact with the almighty wills governing nature. But the first religious form (theology) does humanity good service not by this illusion alone. Though its other good services are paid for at a dear price.

2) The theory which derives the whole of religion from belief in the souls of the dead and from the veneration of ancestors seems to me one-sided. According to Lippert, for instance, it follows that the crocodile was venerated because it devoured corpses and was therefore a living grave. On this pattern he tries to construct all the veneration of animals, reducing to nothing the valuation of those animals as dangerous or useful forces. The sun, according to Lippert, is venerated only because the representation arose of the transmigration of the souls of ancestors into the sun. The strain is obvious. This does not, however, refute the fact that the veneration of ancestral spirits had an enormous influence on primitive religious consciousness. The spirit of a man, especially of a significant man, a man having power, could do much harm and much good. One must not forget his rights, or leave him after death without food and prayer; one must not transgress his commands either. Old men everywhere are naturally the guardians of customs and aptitudes, the living tradition of the tribe. The transmission of the experience of the clan, of the rudiments of technique and hygiene, was of course of enormous significance, especially in the absence of any somewhat perfected writing. The dead elders remained fantastic guardians of custom, and the properties of a spirit — omnipresent, invisible but mighty — made them more terrible zealots of worldly wisdom and of the primitive law than they had been in life. 16 The psychic accumulation and transmission of experience, as distinct from heredity, is a new, purely human force in the struggle of organic life with the environment. And originally it could not, without great harm, possess that mobility and flexibility which it possesses now. Custom is at first imperious, categorical, like instinct, though it is not innate. Custom is in the beginning, as it were, the instinct of the clan or tribe, which categorically commands individuals with the voice of the elders. Religion renders enormous assistance to the force of tradition, for thanks to it tradition becomes holy, sacred, mysterious: it teaches that the spirits stand guard over it, and that a man outside a compact with them is condemned to destruction. The bad side of this phenomenon is obvious at once. If tradition helps, and everything that strengthens it is useful, then on the other hand it also fetters new living forces. It shares the properties of physiological instinct: instinct, with which many animals are richly endowed at birth, greatly shortens painful experience — it is, as it were, ready-made hereditary capital — but it also leaves too little room for further development; whereas the human infant, far less rich in instinct and therefore utterly helpless at its birth, is by that very fact able to adapt itself infinitely more variously and flexibly to its particular environment. At the lower stages of development a religiously ossified tradition is, as it were, the instinct necessary for the stability of the commune; further on it becomes a clear obstacle to the rich mobility acquired along with social differentiation, and humanity has to wage a heavy struggle with the inheritance of its fathers: at first the dead man supports — then with his strong skeleton hand he seizes and holds the living.

But here too we observe a curious phenomenon, the same that was noticed in the development of sacrifice. Living needs compel new procedures of labour, customs, clothing, food — but man is afraid to break with the gods, to violate his compact with them; and so he preserves the old ways in his addresses to the spirit, declaring them sacred. All peoples bring the gods food long since gone out of use; the Egyptians strictly forbade burying the dead in any but the old garments — of linen and of a particular cut; in sacrifice they used stone knives, and so on. And even now the Orthodox priest wears, in the street and especially in church, courtly Byzantine dress, believing that this is more pleasing to the Lord God than a frock coat. Heaven is conservative with respect to dress as with respect to language. There they speak only dead languages. It was not always possible happily to circumvent ritual prescriptions ready to embrace a man's every step; the struggle is sometimes ferocious and bloody, the innovators perish, and if they do not conquer — the whole nation congeals and inwardly rots, until a neighbour who has outgrown it subdues it.

3) Even at the early stages of human experience, conflicts are possible between the commune and the instincts of the individual. With the further differentiation of society this possibility increases. Law is above all the expression of the centripetal force, of the interests of the commune. There is no doubt whatever that the commune with the wisest laws — that is, organising its inner life most purposively under the given conditions, the commune in which absolute obedience is the general rule — is the strongest one in the struggle with its enemies too. Public opinion, so-called morality, serves as a supplement to law. But what gives it particular might in the struggle with the centrifugal forces, with the individual's striving to violate the interests of his neighbour or of the whole commune for the sake of his own pleasure or advantage — that is religious sanction. The gods, guardians of compacts, stand invisibly on eternal guard. 17 The all-seeing one sits at the very top of the sky (Varuna, Uranios, Dios-pater) and hurls the smiting lightning at the breaker of oaths. The deeply implanted fear of nature and its forces is thus taken into police service — by way of a moral-mythical interpretation of natural phenomena. The sun all-seeing, the stars as eyes, the lightning that smites — all these are witnesses and judges, as are the hosts of spirits hovering around living men.

When society disintegrates into classes, the laws of the state become clearly unjust. Their wisdom can no longer come down merely to the purposive organisation of labour, marriage and military self-defence; it must further, while neglecting those aims as little as possible, secure the unpunished and widest possible exploitation of the lower by the higher. Religion in the overwhelming majority of cases (though, as we shall see, not always) takes the side of the law, even where the law is clearly a class one. The gods become the gods of the masters. They either despise the commoner and the slave and punish him for his offences with the same cold cruelty as the law, or they glorify the meekness and non-resistance of the slave as a virtue, promising reward for it in another world. Cementing class society and becoming a support of the ruling classes — religion becomes a counter-revolutionary force, sometimes fatal to society. "How shall I raise my hand against my master, is not the dazzling Marduk, father of his fathers, standing behind him, and with him all his angels?" so thinks the Babylonian commoner, adding a fictitious chain to his real ones, a chain more paralysing than all the rest.

"How shall I raise my hand against my master, is it not God's will that he should rule and I obey, and shall not he that endureth to the end be saved?" So thinks the Christian slave.[E17]

But religion is not always counter-revolutionary. Rebellious slaves may have a god of their own. It may be the god of their homeland, if they are an enslaved tribe, or some deity especially venerated by the lower strata of the people. By a peculiar confluence of circumstances, the Jewish God — Jehovah, Sabaoth — was for long predominantly the god of the rebellious lower classes in all the religiously coloured European revolutions. Even in the French revolutions (the Great one and the later ones) and in the Italian revolution, Jehovah, somewhat reworked by his latest prophets Rousseau and Mazzini, tried to put himself at the head of the revolutionary people. It is hard to doubt that the cry "God is with us!" was inspiring, and therefore intensified the onset of the revolt. Yet even the most revolutionary god, as we shall see below, brings with him his own great misfortunes.
