The Theory of Redemption

Translated by S. Alexander Laurent

Having become guardians of social justice, the gods — at first elementally ferocious — themselves become ever more and more just. They are transformed at last into a perfect and beneficent world-government. Polytheism is either hierarchised and receives a monarch, or yields its place to monotheism.

The joyful representation, elevating the human soul, of the gods or God as the best, most worthy, highest being that a given people in a given epoch can think out — the ideal beauty of God — must not and cannot be stained with responsibility for the evil and horror of life. God is just — that is the passionate postulate of a man who has fallen in love with himself in the person of his God, his own illumined reflection in the mirroring sky of fantasy. If man suffers despite God's justice — then he himself is to blame. Better to accuse oneself, as a real man, than God — ideal humanity. The most beneficent sovereign, the most perfect republic — they punish for offences and crimes, they inflict suffering as punishment. So: the evil of life, the sufferings of this world — these are punishment for sin.

Realistic Judaism, having stated the fact of suffering and death even of infants who had not managed to commit any sin, easily arrived at the idea of responsibility for the sins of parents. Two circumstances especially strongly supported this conception: the indubitable fact of heredity and degeneration, and the collective, clan responsibility for crimes. From of old the clan, and later the family, answered for the deeds of its member. Man was not yet regarded separately as a self-standing individual. And nature in reality too bound him firmly to his ancestors and descendants by the mighty law of heredity. So we are hereditarily sinful. The crimes of the fathers lie upon us, and we pile new "shameful deeds" upon them, for we are a spring infected at the source, our bodies are corrupted, we are fallen beings. The first man and the first woman committed the first terrible sin. 21[E23]

Still bolder and more beautiful is the thought of the fallen angels — pure and beautiful spirits locked up for their crimes in human bodies subject to torment. The earth is the hell of the angels, bodily man is the prison of an angel punished by the Lord for sin before his face.

To the weight of sufferings and hardships, to the weight of remorse for one's own offences before the face of one's conscience, the opinion of fellow citizens and the powers that be, there was joined the consciousness of the primordial sinfulness of the world; an enormous dark shadow of sin, self-abasement and shame lay upon the countenance of humanity — but in exchange the summits of the mountains rising into the heavens could burn the brighter, and at that price the unstained justice of the deities was bought.[E24]

But that is not all: with the doctrine of man's radical sinfulness, all the shortcomings of life, the limitedness of man's power over the elements, his fragility and sickliness, his inertia and poverty — acquired a purely moral character as well. All physical hardships are punishments; and if so, they will all cease, and life will turn into pure joy and the earth into paradise, when sin is redeemed. Attempts to create redemptive rites quickly led to disillusionment. No religion could of course devise a redemption that would really put an end to evil. The hopes had to be transferred to the future. At some time a redemptive act would be accomplished, an act of man's reconciliation with God and of the cessation of evil. Thus messianism is born. Sometimes this or that historical fact — the appearance of a great and pious king or an outstanding prophet — was taken by humanity, thirsting and craving salvation, for the onset of the kingdom of peace, good and truth. But new disillusionments followed. The supposed messiah was demoted to the rank of forerunner, or the hopes connected with him were transferred to his second coming. Of the special forms of messianism — Persian, Jewish, Hellenic and Buddhist — we shall speak in later chapters. For the moment let us note only the following. Humanity created a radiant deity of power, beauty, wisdom and truth. By this it in essence raised itself to the ideal; it grasped itself in its embryonic grandeur, expressed in a great theological myth life's aspirations towards full and exultant flowering, towards harmony and absolutely victorious might and eternity. But humanity did not enter into this illumined portrait of itself in all that was precious and beautiful in it. In such a God there is no place for suffering. To make the king and judge of the world, the ideal of might and blessedness, suffer would be to distort the glory of the victory, fantastically pre-imaged, mythically foretasted. But man had already, at a certain height of his development, recognised the value of suffering — namely the value of innocent and purposive suffering. Is man's capacity for self-sacrifice not divine? The capacity of the hero to live and die for his people, of the mother for her child. Two great sorrows humanity raised to the sky: the sorrow of the mother for her child, the sorrow of the hero for men and his suffering for his own kind. Humanity bowed down before the sacrifice of the mother and the sacrifice of the hero.

If humanity is ever forgiven, it will be for these two great sacrifices. The preserver of the species, the Great Mother in general, who in sorrows and torments gives birth to life and guards it, who mourns its sufferings and defends its rights — and the hero, innocently taking upon himself the weight of sin, the hero going to a deed of death — these are man's intercessors before the highest gods; these, we would say, are documents of nerves and blood testifying to man's divinity and permitting him to look, without blinking, into the face of God — the ideal, the sun of most luminous humanity in its apotheosis.

Osiris, Vishnu, Buddha, Adonis, Zagreus, Prometheus, Heracles, Baldr, Christ, Ali, Isis, Dea Mater, the Mother of God — Fatima, and others — are symbols of humanity in its redeeming, innocent and self-sacrificingly purposive suffering. And boldly humanity proclaimed: suffering heroism — that too is God. It seated its loving suffering, the torment of love, beside the throne of God, at the right hand of omnipotence.[E25]

But by this, in its own eyes, it emptied its own soul. All its best it raised to the sky; on earth nothing remained. Redeeming heroism became a stranger from the heavens, a hand stretched out from heaven, and not an impulse of the earth towards the heavens.

Where the redeemer remained a hero — he began to outgrow God and to cast reproaches at him for injustice and cruelty. Where he became a god himself — the tragedy of redemption threatened to turn into a monstrous tragicomedy: a God assuaging his own wrath by his own sufferings, a God forgiving men for his own merits, a God sacrificing to himself his own first-born. The marvellous myth of the highest life, thinkable in the period of the struggle for perfection, was distorted by contact with theological logic, and turned into a tangled, incomprehensible dogma.

And meanwhile the logic of common sense drove theological logic forward. Man raised his God ever higher. If an absolute, then an absolute. Before his glittering perfection everything vanished, nature became the work of his hands, and the religious contradiction began to cut the eyes. St Paul teaches with enthusiasm in the Epistle to the Romans: "The scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth." But suddenly a question arises: "Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?"[E26] What is the theologian to answer? "Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?"[E26] Will such an answer satisfy the proud heart of the new man? Where is thy justice, God? Thou art turning again into a capricious tyrant!

Monarchy, with its arbitrary self-will, its flattery, its prohibition on reasoning — has befouled the countenance of the Godhead. Instead of the ideal Father we constantly meet the King. But God the Father is unthinkable beside a world lying in evil, and God the King is unacceptable to the grown conscience of man.[E27]

"The gods are human feelings, placed by men into nature. When man noticed that nature does not have his feelings — the gods died. But their death is a sign that humanity no longer needs them." These are the words of the Belgian poet Verhaeren. They are deep. Humanity struggles in the nets of its theological riddle; so long as the gods are needed by it, it seeks a way out, it exclaims in semi-despair: Credo quia absurdum. Having lost God before the time, the heart bleeds away. A marvellous specimen of the poetry born of grief for a prematurely dead god are the poems and letters of Lenau. 22

But at last humanity can let the gods go in peace. They have served their time.
