Götterdämmerung. The Second Solution of the Religious Problem

Translated by S. Alexander Laurent

The fundamental cause of the dying of the gods is the growth of human self-confidence before the face of nature. The victory of thought is insufficient for the final defeat of prejudices. What does it matter that the thought of Democritus grasps the world without a creator, and the phenomena of nature without spirits hiding behind them? What does it matter that Epicurus founds a purely human morality, reducing it to the rules of the happiest personal life? What does it matter that Lucretius conquers the fear of death and utters the great words:

These lofty ideas remained the possession of a handful of philosophers. During the lifetime of the sages named, superstition raged; and after their death humanity still had to plunge headlong into a mysticism hostile to life. Only labour, and the philosophy of labour — natural science — durably destroys the age-old structure, because they simultaneously prove its logical fragility, its contradiction of the facts, and its uselessness, which is the chief thing. Man's growing labour, and chiefly industrial, urban labour, teaches man the lawfulness of nature. And not the mysterious succession of phenomena which the astronomer and the husbandman state, but mechanical lawfulness. The tools of the workshop, strictly calculated procedures of work, and a result always exactly foreseen — that is the pledge of a mechanical world-view. The world is a mechanism. That is the great discovery of handicraft labour, expressed anew by the lips of Leucippus, Democritus and Lucretius, and far more durably, with the rebirth and growth of manufactories and factories, by Gassendi, Descartes, La Mettrie, Holbach and the newest materialism, and finally by the energeticist philosophy of nature. But a "mechanism" torn away from labour has in it something even disconsolate. The world is a mechanism. What is good about that? "The king of heaven is overthrown, the thrones of earth totter, the world has become a republic, hierarchy is struck at the root, the fear of the supernatural which held men in chains has scattered like smoke" — rejoices the ideologue of materialism. "It has become dull, grey, hard, cold in the world," says the poet. "It has become terrible, senseless. We with our reason live in the maw of a soulless devil who will crush us with his indestructible teeth and indifferently decompose in his glowing belly into chemical elements our thought, our beauty, love and ideal. Terrible!" says the idealist.

But labour is not daunted. A "mechanism" bound up with labour acquires a quite different character. So the world is lawful; in it one can foresee; in it no incomprehensible forces lurk; one can count on it, and act confidently upon it, resting on cognition. To know the laws of the mechanism — does that not mean being able to control it?

And where the contemplative type saw despair, the active, economic type discerned its own coming kingdom. "If there is no God," it said, "then I can become one." — "The elements are mighty, but they are slaves of necessity; I am small, but reasonable. I shall subjugate space and time, making of swift-flying electricity my Mercury, my charioteer; Vulcan and Neptune will be my workmen; I shall conquer and order the earth, and perhaps stretch out a hand to the moon… And beyond? If I send my word across the ocean of water, why should I not conquer the ethereal ocean too? All is possible for labour resting upon cognition."

Similar exultation already rings from the pages of Bacon's New Atlantis. But a new enemy lies in wait for humanity. The progress of its royal power, the creation of steel slaves breathing steam and animated by electricity, was accompanied by the enslavement and ruin of millions of men. Greed, the merciless and cruel exploitation of man by man, the sudden squalls of crises, harmful competition, the all-powerful faceless stock exchange, the triumph of cotton, coal, steel and of their master gold over man — nearly killed the joyful impulse of the Mores, the Bacons and the Condorcets.

But Saint-Simon, giant of thought, great prophet before the face of humanity, calls forward just as loudly and joyfully. To the howls of the petty-bourgeois economists, to the curses against capital, he answers with a great answer — organise! Suffering comes from individualism, private property, the fragmentation of economy, egoistic strivings; the task of industry, agriculture and trade, the economic practical task of humanity, is to organise its forces fraternally. And Saint-Simon boldly called this commercial-industrial task a religious one. But that was already the dawn of a religion without God.

Labour grows. With it grow science and technology, as the understanding of the lawfulness of nature and the ability to make use of that understanding. With it grows socialism, as the understanding of the necessity of organising all-human forces for further victories, for further growth. The secrets of social disorder have been grasped. The old false procedures — appeals to enlightened monarchs and millionaires, the revolts of conspirators aiming at the seizure of power, the organisation of model communes — are abandoned: the enemy is naked, the fighter is armed, the true representative of labour, labour incarnate — the proletariat of all peoples — has taken the banner of the ideal into its own hands. With its victory the gods will die definitively, and man will ascend to Olympus to dictate laws to the world. Redemption will disclose its secret: it is the secret of labour, and of its international and classless organisation.

At a certain public debate, one of the outstanding representatives of the progressive clergy came forward as opponent against the present writer. In an extremely vivid speech, full of images, this priest developed his thoughts on the significance of religion for humanity. He ended approximately as follows: "Human life appears to me as a great chamber, into which air, warmth and light penetrate through several windows: the window of science, the window of philosophy, the window of art, the window of religion. They want to board up this last window. But I say — leave it; the more light, warmth and free air bursts into our chamber, the easier it will be to breathe, the more joyful to live. But they object to me: do you not hear that from the fourth window there blows no scent of garden or sea, that a putrid spirit penetrates through it? — That is true, I say, but look: there lies carrion by the window and is decomposing; take it away and healthy air will pour in through the window again. That carrion is slavish churchliness, the triumph of police religiosity, the kingdom of the deadening letter, the humiliation of the church before men of violence, all the filth of official vileness accumulated over the centuries. Take it away, but do not board up the window."[E28]

Answering the opponent, the author of these pages said among other things: "I too am a partisan of all four windows, and I too wish to help remove the corpse that has blocked the fourth window with its dead mass. But, with my respected opponent's permission, I shall express a thought that will perhaps shock him, perhaps be too bold for his ears, but is true for me. He was mistaken about the great dead man; he enumerated for us the worms swarming upon him: it is a dead god that lies at the window of religion; it is the idea of the deity that must be removed, so that through the windows the shining horizons of progress and the sun of the pure ideal may become visible. We almost agreed in defining the influence of religion as a system of feelings that raise man high above his everyday level, above self-interest, petty calculation, solitude and cowardice — up to that plateau where the wind of freedom blows, where hearts beat in unison and strain forward and upward, and the wings of creative dream grow, and hands grow strong as steel for the accomplishment of great things. But in one thing, essential and central, we differ irreconcilably: I do not accept God; he is not needed; this illusion, on the contrary, is harmful.

All the height of religion remains, but the world ceases to be a tyranny, as it also ceases to be an enlightened monarchy, for which they stubbornly wish to take it, despite all the torments of humanity. Humanity is left to itself. Man is God to man. Let us have no other gods; let us not bow down to them nor serve them."[E29]

Taking the floor again, the opponent declared that he did not wish "with his little cane to prop up Mont Blanc", that "much has already been said about the death of God, and he is alive and well", that "we shall long be gone, and God will still be alive".

The priest did well to refrain from propping up Mont Blanc with a cane, because the cane would of course have broken pitifully under the weight of the fatally collapsing Mont Blanc. And it is collapsing.

The appeal to God's tenacity is unconvincing. Against private property too they have spoken, it seems, for as long as it has existed, and it still binds humanity with its strong knots. But my respected opponent, it seems, is by no means inclined to infer its eternity from that. We have already spoken of the causes destroying faith in the deity. Opposite causes conserve it: the technical backwardness of the countryside, the extreme dependence of the husbandman on the weather with the weak development of meteorology as a science, and still more as an applied art. But the development of machine agriculture, the development of strictly scientific chemical fertilisation of the soil, a system of irrigation and, very possibly, the art of calling up and stopping rain, snow and hail (certain experiments with the use of artillery have already been made in this direction), or of completely paralysing the harmful consequences of uneven precipitation — all this will tear the husbandman too out of dependence on the caprices of nature, and make him too a real master of his production. The broad wave of culture, which will wash away the remnants of the wildness of the dark countryside, will complete the rest.

Another bulwark of the religion of God is woman, so long consigned to a closed life and ignorance, finding joy and the elevation of the soul only in the unhealthy atmosphere of the church and the confessional. She will be conquered by the new culture even more easily. Only the base desire of the bourgeoisie to keep woman in ignorance and prejudice, in order to possess her as a slave, and the reprehensible indifference of the majority of proletarians to the cast of mind of their wives — give the clergy the possibility of holding in their paws a woman's soul that thirsts for poetry, but stands ready to fling itself wide open to meet the new religion.

But the most important cause of the durability of mysticism is the economic disorganisation of society; it strikes the peasant, the small tradesman and the artisan alike, it creates the vicissitudes of fate for the middle, intermediate class, it rules even over the big bourgeoisie, and the proletariat itself scarcely overcomes it, resting on its clear understanding of the real causes of that dark "chance", fate, destiny and so on, which brings about great and small catastrophes in the ocean of social life.

Paul Lafargue explained excellently the cause of religion's durability — it is the elemental character of the phenomena of social life, not yet grasped and not yet regulated by man. I borrow from him the characterisation of the social mysticism of the bourgeoisie: "In the economic life of the bourgeois all is full of inexplicable mysteries, with whose insolubility the economists have reconciled themselves. The capitalist who has succeeded, thanks to his scientists, in making use of the forces of nature, halts in such fright before the incomprehensible actions of economic forces that he acknowledges them inaccessible to investigation, like his God, and counts it most reasonable to relate with submission to misfortune when it overtakes him, and with gratitude to good fortune when the latter comes. He speaks like Job: 'The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.' Economic forces appear to his fantasy as good and evil genii. The terrible uncertainty in the social world that surrounds the bourgeois, not letting him know why and how everything happens, meets him in his industry, his trade, his property, his well-being, his life. It frightens him as the incomprehensible in nature frightened the savage, exciting and inflaming his vivid fantasy.[E30]

Anthropologists ascribe primitive man's belief in witches, his belief in the soul, in spirits and in God, to his ignorance of nature; the same explanation can be applied to civilised man, whose spiritualist ideas and belief in God depend on his ignorance of the social world."

"Uncertainty as to the duration of his well-being makes the bourgeois, like the savage, acknowledge in advance the existence of higher beings who govern social phenomena at their whim, making them further or hinder, as was also declared by Theognostus and in the Old Testament. And in order to dispose them favourably towards himself, he gives himself up to the crudest superstition, lights candles before the images of the saints, and prays to the Christian triune God or to the single God of the philosophers."

A whole series of causes prepares in the proletariat the natural soil for unbelief, for the consolidation of a realistic world-view. Lafargue says:

"Work in the workshop at machines puts the worker face to face with such terrible forces of nature as the peasant has no conception of; but it is not they who rule over him — he controls them. The gigantic object of steel and iron that fills the factory and sets it in motion like an automaton, the object that sometimes swallows, maims and crushes him, nevertheless does not evoke in him a feeling of superstitious horror, as thunder does in the peasant; it does not touch him, does not frighten him; because he knows that the separate parts of this metallic monster were made and assembled by his comrades, that he need only shift a belt to set it in motion or stop it. Despite all its power and its marvellous productive capacity, the machine contains nothing mysterious for him. The worker at the electric station, who need only turn a handle to set the street trams in motion at a distance or light up the streets of the city, can say, like God in the first book of Moses: 'Let there be light!' and there will be light.[E31] He has never thought about fantastic wizardry, since this wizardry is for him something simple, quite simple, ordinary. It would throw him into great astonishment if he were told that God could at will stop the machines or put out the lamps. He would answer that this anarchic God is nothing but a broken part of the machine or a torn wire. Practical work in the modern workshop teaches the worker scientific determinism, although he has not undertaken the theoretical study of philosophy." Marx in the first volume of Capital sketched, in passing and briefly, but with genius clarity, the picture of the religious development of humanity.

"The religious world is nothing but the reflection of the real world. For a society in which the products of labour ordinarily take the form of commodities, in which, consequently, the most ordinary relation between producers consists in their comparing the values of their products, and under the guise of such a comparison of objects, in the reduction of their private individual labour to the measure of homogeneous human labour — for such a society Christianity, with its cult of the abstract man, and especially in its bourgeois development in Protestantism, deism and so on, represents the most corresponding form of beliefs. In the ancient Asiatic, antique and other modes of production, the transformation of products into commodities, and consequently the transformation of men into commodity-producers, plays a subordinate role, which, however, becomes the more decisive the more the communal economy approaches its dissolution. True trading peoples exist only in the crevices of the world, like the gods of Epicurus or the Jews in the pores of Polish society.[E32]

These ancient social organisations of production are incomparably simpler and clearer than bourgeois society, but they rest either on the undeveloped state of the individual man, who has not yet torn himself from the umbilical cord binding him by a natural clan tie to the other men of the commune, or on relations of direct domination and subordination. They arise and exist only where the productive forces of labour are still at a very low level of development, where consequently the social relations in the sphere of material life — both of men among themselves and of man to nature — are correspondingly very limited.

Such limitedness is reflected in thought in the ancient worship of nature and in other forms of popular belief. The reflection of the real world in beliefs can in any case disappear only when the conditions of labour and of practical life present to man clear and reasonable relations; only then will the world be freed from the mysterious fog wrapping it about, when life becomes the production of men freely united into a society, acting consciously and according to a definite plan. But for this society requires a definite material basis, or aggregate of material conditions of existence, which on their side are the product of a long and painful process of development."

Grown labour — that is the God-killer. But it is also the creator of the new religion, for it sets as its goal victory over nature, the removal of evil, the triumph of reason over the elemental, eternally growing might, the continuous perfecting of the species — that is, the fulfilment of man's primordial desires; and all this by way of an organisation that seizes hold of individuals, binds them in space and time, makes brothers and co-workers of a Chinaman and a Frenchman, of a man of the twentieth century and the bright descendant of the thirtieth. And the new religion requires self-denial too, but only free self-denial. It wants mercy, not sacrifice; it wants loving devotion to the species. Who, if not the proletarian — reared by broad cooperation and able to hope for success only by resting on broad international unions — who, if not he, is to become the bearer of the new religion?[E33]

The reconciliation of the laws of life and the laws of nature will come about through the victory of life by means of cognition and technology. Labour, broad sociality, a developed feeling for the species, hope in continuous progress — that is what gives religious consolation in our epoch. Such is the second solution of the religious problem. If there is a God here — then it is life and its highest representative, the human species. Service to science, labour and, for the present epoch, the struggle for socialism — a struggle all-sided, destroying both the decrepit order of society and the decrepit order of the soul, and creating a new society and a new soul — that is the religious task of the new man.
