The well-known investigator of the history of religions, Darmesteter, says in his book The Prophets of Israel: "On eternal Olympus only the dead are alive; the gods become matchlessly beneficent only after passing through the flame of Hades. A god with his retinue of priests, in the glory of the cult, is always an ambiguous despot, mighty alike for good and for evil. But for the gods of heaven and earth death separates the chaff and leaves the eternal grain. The gods of Homer were for the believing Greek a scandalous example: for us they are eternal teachers of beauty and joy, and the distant reflection of their halo shines in our souls. So too Jesus, the poor god, betrayed both before and after the cross, who wished the world so much good and caused so much evil — he will enter into his epiphany only on the day when in some remote village of Salzburg or Navarre the last priest finishes the last mass." 24 The beauty of the dead religions is great. Penetrating into the essence of their myths and dogmas, into their human essence, one is struck by the presentiment of its own destiny shown by the still mentally immature humanity that created them. In fanciful garments there appears to us the one and the same single human religion, which now finds its expression not in idealist philosophy, as Hegel thought, but in scientific socialism — which does not close history as an absolute, but on the contrary opens a new era, introducing at last, after a long and painful prologue, into the Divine Comedy the victory of reason over the elements once deified.
But the paradoxical veils in which infant thought wrapped the living religious instinct are often marvellously beautiful, and some, indeed very many, myths of the old religions, receiving a new meaning in the religion of labour, may — it seems to me — enter into the poetry of this new religion. What could be more beautiful, for instance, than the strange conjectures of primitive poets about the origin of sin. The primordial sin was after all thought up to justify God. But the daring thought of man, between the lines of pious legends, casts at the deity a reproach and a challenge.
To the tyrannical fate in the person of Zeus — ready, without shaking his mighty curls or knitting his Olympian brows, ruthlessly to destroy the human race, pitiful in his Olympian eyes — there is counterposed another, purely human deity: Prometheus. The God-universe and the God-man meet. If thou art so beautiful, Jupiter, and so much order reigns on thy white-and-rosy Olympus, and the children of chaos are driven so deep into the darkness — was it not Prometheus, was it not human cognition that created thee? The sun pierced the gloom with its arrows; but is it not dead without the rays of reason, the sun that illumines the cosmos with thought? But divine nature does not know what it owes to reason, and is ready to destroy the poor beggarly race of bipeds. Only their brother, their leader, Prometheus, took pity on them and stood up for them. He — cognition and labour, reason — gave them the possibility of subjecting to themselves the first element, fire, and opened distant paths before technology. The conquest of fire in the legend calls forth the fury of the gods. One feels that the conquest of fire will one day overthrow their divinity. He taught men agriculture, industry, the social compact. Seeing that they were mortal, he gave them, according to Aeschylus, blind hope — that is, the courage to live and struggle without assurance of victory; that hope, that boldness of carrying the torch into eternal darkness, forward and forward, which constitutes the essence of the new religious feeling. The offended Element destroys Reason; it chains him to the rock of dead matter; it sends upon him ever-renewed sufferings. But he is proud. He knows the secret of the gods. That secret says: the gods must perish. There will come one stronger than Zeus. Who is he? It is the man-labourer, Heracles; it is he who will strike off the chains of reason. The martyrs-seers, prophets, teachers, geniuses-sufferers will come down from the ledges of the rock of suffering, from their captivity, whence with a gaze undimmed amid trials they measured the misty distances and pierced the murk — they will come down, leaning on the mighty arm of the man of action, and Thought and Labour, Providence and Accomplishment, crowned with laurel and oak, will ascend together to Olympus — not as reconciled with Zeus (reconciliation was invented by pious cowardice, by an all too human timorousness) — no! — as conquerors.
Nietzsche strove in vain to belittle the greatness of Adam's sin — or rather Lucifer's — before the greatness of Prometheus's sin.[E34] However much the biblical poet bows before Elohim, however slavishly he kisses his hand, he seems with a kind of genius cunning to weave into the narrative of the first sin the features of a satanic revolt.
The elemental god wants to rule over man; he wants to hear only praise from his lips. For this man must not cognise, must not distinguish good from evil. Did not God, having created the world, say: "And behold, it was very good"?[E35]
And suddenly the worm he himself created begins to criticise the great master.
Yes, eternal criticism, the light-bearing force of reason, pushes Adam and Eve towards the forbidden fruit. And they have tasted. In horror the Elohim gather their council. "If man preserves eternity together with cognition — it is the end of us; truly men will be as gods, for the hope of rivalry with the elements, which crept quietly into the human heart, did not lie." And so there fall upon man exile into ungracious lands, penal labour, sickness and death. The punishing fist, the whistling whip, the slave-man kisses, and curses the tempter, and says to his own reason, glancing timidly about him — "be silent!" But the revolt goes its own way. The Cainites serve the Light-bearer. It is their descendants who will begin to build the eternal tower of culture in proud Babylon — a city, great, passionate, suffering, gigantic All-city of mankind! — And again fear and horror and confusion in heaven.[E34][E36]
If Adam was punished with exile to penal servitude, now they resort to provocation: they stir up dissensions among men, divide them into nations. What a profound view of the essence of man's weakness: to improve the technique of labour, so that bread need not be moistened with the sweat of the face; to overcome diseases; and, above all, to unite all humanity into one — then paradise will be taken back, and heaven will be stormed, and the curse of the Elohim will lose its force. Through ages and ages men — Cainites — will read with a tremor those cunning, seemingly submissive pages, and where the Sethite sighs in contrition, there the Cainite will fall into thought with a heart beating anxiously and joyfully, with a burning head, and the breath of the Light-bearer, the Great Slandered One, the Spirit of revolt, criticism, cognition, the Architect of the Tower of Babel — will sweep over him and stir the hair on his unruly head.[E36]
Anatole France in his The White Stone relates that precisely in the epoch of the first successes of Christianity and the twilight of the Olympian gods, many pagans expected a change of kings on Olympus; there was a belief current that, according to the true prediction of Prometheus, Jupiter would have to yield his throne to his son Heracles, the deified man. With his accession justice too would come into its own. Heracles is the god of labour. Only men of labour, active classes, could create this man-god in their fantasy. The force of labour and its great prospects had already become comprehensible to the human mind. Meanwhile among the elemental gods there was one fitted beyond all others to become the representative of deified labour — the sun-god. The sun could be worshipped in the most various respects: as light-bearer and symbol of the struggle of light — culture — with gloom — barbarism; as the source of warmth now beneficent, now killing; as the fertiliser of the earth, the great male of the world. The sun's movement across the sky — rising, zenith, setting; its struggle with the clouds; its power gradually growing from winter to summer and then its decline — all this gave abundant food to mythical creation. Man noticed that the sun is the great source of energy, that it is precisely it which continuously produces a series of changes in nature, and he grasped it as a labourer too.
Alongside radiant Apollo, Baal burning with passion, and the mysterious Osiris who dies to rise again, there arise solar deities who actively redeem man and labour for him, such as Mithras and especially Vishnu.
None the less, the Greek genius surpassed the significance of all solar myths, gathering them into a singularly beautiful bouquet around Heracles, whom, following a deep instinct, it turned from a god into a man-hero.
Labour, born on earth, at once meets enemies. The elemental serpents want to kill it while it is still helpless, in its infant cradle; but the child Labour succeeds in strangling them with the first exertion of its still unformed muscles. Young Labour is worthy of the royal crown and has a lawful claim to it, but false kings domineer over him and deceive him. A heavy road lies before him, from deed to deed. He struggles with wild beasts, gradually forcing them to retreat before man; he struggles too with greedy elements, draining the marshes, making them a field of grain, a garden; he cleanses morally and materially the dirty life of human settlements (the Augean stables). The enemies grow: in place of each severed head of the hydra of evil two new ones take their place, hissing with the same malice, belching the flame of hatred. But the hero is untiring. He liberates Reason, mighty in foresight but weak in struggle, groaning in chains. He summons death to battle; he descends into the mysterious depths of Tartarus to bring out from there the guardian of the kingdom of death — Cerberus — and over the graves of those dear to him he fights with Thanatos and snatches victims from the very teeth of death. And he suffers. He suffers from humiliations, enmity, cunning. They enmesh him in a poisoned garment that binds him more firmly than chains — chains he would have broken; the poisonous shirt eats his body, dries up his blood. He cannot bear this shirt of slavery upon his body: he prefers death in flame to slavery and slow torment. But lo, like the Phoenix, out of the flame of the death-struggle he comes forth for a new life, comes forth a conqueror, a god, and Youth — Hebe — hands him the cup of eternal joy, of eternal freshness, and becomes his wife.
Let all these facts be interpreted as myths that arose on the soil of solar phenomena — is there not here a great consciousness of the might of labour, of its royal right, a consciousness of its fate full of suffering, a consciousness of the necessity for it of casting itself voluntarily into the fire of a purifying catastrophe, a faith in its eternal victory? The kingdom of Heracles will come. We shall yet see a temple to the human genius, a place of reflection, of festivals and of spectacles, a place of the union of men among themselves and with art for the bright moments of the enthusiastic consciousness of the unity of the Species in time and space, and of its sufferingly joyful, tormenting and victorious destiny; and at the gates of the colossal, luminous temple the new man will be met by the gigantic figures of Prometheus and Heracles, of Reason and Labour, who have given each other strong hands above the beautiful, bright door of joy.
And Christ? In this legend there is too much humility, but even here a democratic feeling breaks through, and here too, in creating, it anticipates the future, catching the meaning of its own destiny.
Here too a man is proclaimed God. And who is he, and whence? The Messiah is expected from the four corners of the world, but not from the depths of the labouring people. Yet he came out of that Nazareth of which everyone said "what good can come from there?" He is not a king, nor a military commander, nor a rich man — he is a carpenter. But sitting in the temple among the wise, he already astonishes them, though with an unripe speech. Labour is quick to ripen, and it was not for nothing that Marx spoke of the gigantic children's shoes of workers' thought. The wisest of the wise will have to recognise in the still infant Labour — the Messiah. The noble Owen, the fiery Bakunin, the profound Marx — they bowed down before the manger of the nascent proletariat. His life is full of privations, but amid humiliation, walking in his coarse clothing by the brilliant temple of civilisation, he says, in proud consciousness of his greatness: "I can destroy this temple and build it again in three days." This consciousness, on Labour's part, of its creative and destructive force overfills with malice the hearts of his enemies, the guardians of the old temple. In outbursts of wrath, did Labour not try to drive the traders and bankers out of the temple of life, in which they had established themselves as predators?[E37][E38][E39] Did it not ascend the mount of Tabor, transfigured into the garments of its future, filling the world with the unexpected radiance of its usually dark and downcast face? Were not the great days of the Commune, of the Internationale, a Tabor of the proletariat? Why does the myth coincide with actuality? Because it divines in many things the very soul of history, expresses the aspirations of man — in this case precisely of the humiliated class of antiquity; and when the appointed times of its hopes draw near, events carry in them echoes of age-old expectations.[E39]
And a new Messiah ascends the mount of Golgotha; his blood flowed, they nailed him to the cross. And mocking, they said to him: "you, the liberator of the world — liberate yourself from penal servitude, prisons, and graves, into which we have laid you for your impulses." But Labour cannot be killed; it will rise again and continue its preaching, its heavy struggle; it will bear its cross again, from Golgotha to Golgotha, along a road lined with crosses, for truly the Saviour of the World does not die only once.[E40]
But that day will come. The vindictive genius of Michelangelo unfolded its wrathful beauty on the wall of the Sistine Chapel. Ah, you await the second coming? You expect the benign Christ in white robes, with hair and beard neatly combed to either side like a young priest's, with the fragile body of a weak idealist?! — No! — he is not like that, the prophet Buonarroti cries to you in his gloomy colours — he will come as a lightning-flashing Heracles, young, smiting, avenging, a shatterer of worlds, able in three days to overthrow everything and recreate everything. And the proud rulers, slanderers, exploiters, egoists and hypocrites will be hurled into the abyss through air trembling with the ringing brass of the dread archangelic trumpets. And out of their graves will rise the predecessors of the great day, for judgment before the face of the new humanity. Blessed is he who will be honoured, and he will enter the Pantheon of a grateful posterity. Woe to him who has stained the pages of human history with his deeds. They will be fixed in the memory of the Species as repulsive monsters in its family.[E39][E41]
The old myths, the old hopes, stretch out their hands to the new. Come, poets of the great movement, artists of tomorrow: breathe new life into the decrepit myths, create new ones — show man his clarified, his illumined image in symbols that shake the soul and seize it with delight; come to further the growth of all-human sympathy and solidarity; bind with the golden ties of art the past to the coming.
Once I heard a gifted philologist lamenting the pitiable fate of Eros.
For the ancient Greek, said the philologist, Eros was the dearest of the gods; he depicted him as a tender youth, shining with the supple beauty of a young body, already strong, already manly, with a brow full of thought, eyes full of calm love, lips full of sweet enchantment. And look what became of him in the late epoch of the ancient world: he turned into a plump little Cupid armed with a toy bow; his swan's wings, made for flights to distant heavens, turned into the wings of a dove, a dragonfly, a moth. A playful spirit of amorous intrigues and pleasures! And in the form of the roguish Putto he rises again during the Renaissance. Even now one can meet him: he serves to decorate the barbarous hall of a merchant's house, interspersed with "bouquets", sprawling awkwardly over the wallpaper and the ceiling. The degeneration of love. Christianity understood love, but differently. It was the love of self-sacrifice and suffering; its touching image was the bird Alkanost, tearing open its own heart with its beak to feed its beloved nestlings with its blood. But where is the symbol of love now? Has love not died?
No, answered the socialist to the philologist — no, answered him the author of these lines: love has not died, but it has moved down into the lower strata of society and has not yet found, alas, its artists and poets. Its symbol is rather crude, but no less touching and deep than the former ones. On the banners of workers' unions, on the walls of labour exchanges and people's houses, one may see the symbol of the new love: two strong working hands gripping one another firmly, and two hammers crossed. The Greek's love, his Eros, was an impulse away out of the world; the idealists of classical antiquity felt that the world did not answer the demands of the human soul, the demands of conscious life, and in their free fantasy they built another world — already finished, existing alongside and above — an ideal world: the dream of it, the yearning impulse towards it, they called their highest love. In self-sacrifice, in pity, in death for a friend the Christians found it, rejecting in life everything except the deed of mutual compassion, because they believed that the crown of happiness would be laid by the Almighty Good only on heads bloodied with the crown of thorns of martyrdom.[E42]
But the new man likewise builds in his love, in his imagination, an ideal of happiness and fellowship — yet he no longer sees it separated from himself by an abyss, no longer flies towards it on the bodiless wings of a mystical dream: his ideal is for him a plan, according to which he must rebuild the world. In labour, in technology he has found himself as a god, and has resolved to dictate his will to the world: with the hammer, the iron hammer, he will shatter the formless and the evil; with the same hammer he will forge his golden happiness. Blows will fall, rubble will fly, and out of the formless block there will look upon man the face of the beautiful new humanised world, freed by the hammer. But victory is possible only in cooperation. Let us cross our mighty hammers, let us grip one another's hands firmly. "In union is strength," says the new love. Not only to cognise but to remake the world, says the new love. The workers' union is truly the stone of the new church.[E43]
I am writing these lines and I see opposite me a strange inscription on a grey building: "Ufficio di Genio"! "The Office of Genius"… It means simply the engineering board. Almost funny. But think about it — it stirs the soul. Humanity has already come to know in technology the best fruit of its genius. Only let this great Genius move as quickly as possible under the vaults of the new church, let this Ariel cease to be a prisoner of self-interest and become a true and free friend of humanity. Not for nothing did Strauss, speaking of Christ as the prototype of humanity, allegorically acknowledge his miracle-working power; for before our eyes miracles are accomplished — the victory of reason and will over nature, the sick are healed, mountains move, the stormy oceans are crossed with ease, thought flies on the wings of electricity from one hemisphere to the other — and seeing the successes of the Genius, do we not say: who is this, that even the stormy seas obey him? Do we not sense how the god born between the ox and the ass grows strong?[E44]
Poets, artists, priests, heroes — understand that in the working class is concentrated the social, hygienic, economic salvation — the whole salvation of the species! Do not be troubled, but rejoice that it is young; bring it your gifts: the gold of pure science, the incense of inspired art, the myrrh of holy enthusiasm; it will take them and sow them and reap them and give back a hundredfold: a hundred talents for your talent.[E45]
