Nowhere in the world did the representation of pure spirit, as distinct from everything real and material, attain such a height as in India. Nowhere did it suffer such a terrible collapse.
A gifted, active race, which had created hosts of gods in its own image and likeness[E46], a race of warriors and poets, of broad natures — burst as a conquering flood out of the relatively cold lands into hot and luxurious India.
At the head of the white people went its prince of gods — Indra. He was a soldier from head to foot. All his joy consisted in battles and carousals: a drunkard, a womaniser, a glutton, a bloodthirsty man-slayer — such is this merry god, this unbridled nature, the god of those men whom Nietzsche aptly called Blonde Bestien (blond beasts).
They conquered the country, subdued the black-faced population with its wild religious representations, and became kings of the land of jungles, elephants, stately quiet rivers and burning sun beneath a bottomlessly blue sky. But gradually horror seized the valiant warriors. The risings of the pitiful black men, whose necks lay beneath the warriors’ feet, did not frighten them. But this oppressively hot air, this heavenly fire igniting in the blood an untiring thirst for pleasures, this invincible laziness, this sweet softening of the muscles, this deep inclination to oblivion, to sleep — frightened the warriors… Something firm, frosty, iron in them was melting, slowly dissolving in the hot, caressing, intoxicating atmosphere… Like a beautiful Circe the new burning nature kissed them, and they sank down; some terrible fall, some sleep that fettered their strength, came upon them. And alongside the poison of voluptuous phlegm, this fiery disc on the indigo dome sometimes ignited the soul with an impulse of frenzied passion that destroyed barriers, engendered fierce enmity between recent allies, tore like cobwebs the venerable, unshakeable laws of allied life — a passion that drove men to crimes.
The instinct of self-preservation called them to a severe life, but there was nothing to grasp at in this sea of warm fragrance. Every flower, as if quietly and sweetly laughing at the poor Aryan conqueror, censed him with poison. The northerner conquered the south, enjoyed it as an unheard-of beautiful, spicily sensual slave girl — and now he cannot rise, cannot straighten up: his bones are relaxed, his head swims, and again he falls on the soft bed, struggles in a half-sleep, calls on Indra, stretches a hand towards his heavy armour, while the slave girl, flattering, submissive, with a strange smile on her full lips, calls him again and again to pleasure.
By an impulse of will, a terrible wild impulse, the Aryan tore himself away. He cursed the sweet drink of life, but at a terrible price he achieved freedom. He could no longer live the life of a man, a warrior, a worker, a father. He rejected everything, in order not to perish. So as not to overeat, not to be drunk — he doomed himself to eternal hunger and eternal thirst. In asceticism he found salvation from life.
Renan's remark seems to us deep: "Voluptuousness and self-renunciation are akin. The ascetic, pursued by the horror of life, exhausting himself to be free of it, belongs to the same race that revels in the sensual legend of Krishna. Krishna — the incarnation of pleasures and sensual self-oblivion — the ideal of a people gentle but deprived of strength, given over as a sacrifice to all the seductions of nature — is in essence the brother of Sakya Muni. Krishna's feasts with the shepherd girls of Brindavan have something in common with the enervating asceticism of Buddhism." 25
Yes, sensuality and asceticism are two abysses into which falls weakness that has not the strength to hold on the crest of activity, struggle, labour.
With the most terrifying rapidity the ruin of the proud race showed itself in this, that sensuality called for sexual mixture with the black subjects. The race darkened in skin and in soul. That is why the laws of Manu establish caste partitions with severe force. A stubborn struggle for self-preservation begins. The guardian of racial purity becomes the intellectual aristocracy, the hereditary caste of sages, the keepers of the compacts with the old gods — the caste of the Brahmins. A grey-bearded sage with his Vedas and his sacrificial knife in his hands was placed face to face with the devil, the god of this corrupting land, who had set so many golden nets everywhere.
In the reverence for the Brahmin there showed itself the race's thirst to save itself. One must remember that the salvation of the race meant the preservation of its dominant position. The ruin of military superiority, as a result of the mixing of castes, would have been the ruin of the Aryan aristocracy. It rallied around the Vedas, the laws of Manu and their interpreters, the sages, as around a palladium. This gives a terrible power into the hands of the Brahmins. They grow extraordinarily in their own opinion. The rich imagination and keen thought proper to the Aryan tribe seem to swell and boil in the hot air of India; its immoderate vistas, the monstrously fertile power of its soil, the mirages of its trembling atmosphere, the horror of its black night full of sounds — all this gave food for insane mythological creation, all this hyperbolised every thought, every feeling. The Brahmin was proud of his exceptional position: keeper of the race, friend of the gods, physician and engineer — he looked down upon kings with their purple, their pearls and their sharp swords. What were those goods to him? He was king of kings. Soon he would become master of the gods themselves.
The legend of the struggle of the Brahmin and the king is characteristic. A certain king wanted to take a cow from a Brahmin, but the Brahmin enfeebled the hands of the king's servants with a glance and did not give up the cow. The king was offended. But feeling that ordinary weapons were blunted against the magic circle drawn by wizard power around the venerable elder, he resolved to take vengeance on him by attaining magical power equal to his. And so for a year the king fasted, tasting no food. And then, proud of his ascetic merits, he threw a spear, but it fell at the venerable feet of the elder. Enraged, the king fasts for ten years, taking neither food nor drink. From all lands pilgrims flock together and marvel at the saint sitting motionless beneath the sycamore. After ten years the king rose and threw a spear at the Brahmin. At the mighty blow the mountains trembled, but the spear lay obediently at the feet of the holy elder. In the impulse of his immeasurably passionate soul the king fasts for a hundred years, taking neither food nor drink and restraining his breath. Then earth and heaven were shaken. Indra summoned the gods to council. "Have you heard of the hermit?" asked Mahadeva: "he is now stronger than we are. The stars fall to adorn his sandals, the earth trembles with reverence: nothing is impossible for him." And the king rose and went to the Brahmin, embraced his knees and, hiding his face in his garments, whispered shamefacedly: "My father, forgive me my long anger, and show me a great mercy: receive me into the holy caste, as the last of the Brahmins."
Needless to say, there is no legend in world literature more full of unbridled priestly pride. Only the Brahmin knew how to bring sacrifice to the gods. A correctly brought sacrifice, as the proud priest asserted, is always mighty. No room is left for the caprice of the gods. To the entreaties sent up in the language of the Vedas at a correctly performed sacrifice — they are compelled to submit. This proposition, this dogma, drives the Brahmin's thought onward. He already feels himself master of the world. The elemental gods are his servants. He assures others of this, and himself too. He has subjected to himself the gods of heaven and earth by the power of other gods, the gods of sacrifice: Agni, Soma, Brahman. These three are therefore stronger than all the rest. The ritual gods are higher than the cosmic gods. Agni (fire) is mysterious and pure, he is akin to spirit. Still more akin to it is Soma (the intoxicating drink). Does not some strange and merry spirit enter into a man when he drinks this wondrous liquid? But most spiritual of all is "Brahman" — the word, the power of the incantation. The Logos is already being raised to the throne of the world. The word is a creative force. Despised labour lies somewhere far from us now: no — the divined word, mighty, magical — gives the key to power over the universe. The bearer of the incorruptible, spiritual, rational Brahman-logos is the bodily Brahmin — the priest. The Logos lives in him. Who then is he? Who is this that lives in the breast, or the head, of the sage who knows the incantations before which Indra trembles? It is not the pitiful body that dies and turns to dust. It is a part of the divine Logos, a particle of the almighty, undying spirit. Where is it, in what? It is atman, breath, the invisible principle of life, the I of my I — elusive, other, utterly different from thingness, pure thought distinct from every particular thought, as a bottle is distinct from the liquid: to grasp it one must pour out every liquid and leave the vessel empty: drive, drive out thought, so that thought may remain. Do not think about this or that, about anything — but think. This is outside life; this is no longer life. This is above life. This is essence without attributes, this is form without content. A later Indian philosopher formulates thus the logical operation by which a man hopes to grasp his religion of pure spirit, to catch the state that would make him master of the world and its seductions — an operation which in fact carries him with the force of a maelstrom into the abyss of nihilism and death:
"The sage rises above the idea of form; the idea of individual being disappears for him; he grasps that there are no differences; he arrives at the conclusion that there exists only infinity in space. And he stops."
"Having risen above the idea of space, he grasps it as a representation of the mind: all is the infinity of mind, he says. And he stops."
"Having risen above the idea of the infinity of mind, he arrives at the conclusion that nothing at all exists: All is nothing, he says. And he stops."
"Having risen above the idea of absolute nothing, he arrives at the conclusion that there is neither being nor non-being. And he stops."
"Having risen above the level of the absence of both being and non-being, he arrives at the end of the very idea and of every movement of the spirit. Here he stops."
But this terrible logical operation would have had no practical results if it had not been for the invincible weariness of living, struggling and thinking which had seized the Brahmanic aristocracy and the whole of India.
Nietzsche rightly notes, as the foundation of such a doctrine: "two physiological facts: first, an excessive irritability of sensibility, expressing itself in a refined capacity for suffering; secondly, a spiritual over-development, too long a life among concepts and logical procedures, under whose influence the personal instinct paled before the impersonal."
But Nietzsche is wrong to think that Buddhism was a reaction against Brahmanism. Nothing of the kind. The ultra-philosophical, ultra-nihilistic tirade quoted above stands precisely in the Buddhist book Saggiti sutta.
Nietzsche strove to raise Buddhism above Christianity, thanks to which he introduced into his book The Antichrist an enormous confusion of concepts and historical facts. In essence, however, his characterisation of early Christianity (the Christianity of Jesus, which he moreover forcibly severs even from the Gospels, constructs quite intuitively and declares equal to Buddhism) relates only indirectly to that religion, but explains as well as could be desired the psychological side of the metaphysical religions, whose logical side is disclosed by the above passage from the Saggiti sutta.
Nietzsche says: "We are acquainted with the state of morbid irritability of the sense of touch, which in this case shudders at every contact, at every touch of a solid object. Translate such a physiological habitus into the language of its ultimate logic — as an instinctive hatred of every reality, as flight into the 'incomprehensible', the 'inconceivable', as repugnance for every formula, for every concept of time and space, for everything solid, everything that constitutes custom, institution, church; as life in a world with which no reality any longer comes into contact, in an exclusively 'inner' world, the 'true' world, the 'eternal' world… 'The kingdom of God is within you' (Luke 17:21)[E47]…
The Brahmins reflected their philosophical conclusions and their whole extraordinary mood into the world and gave it a marvellous interpretation. The essence of the world — the god Brahma — is that pure spirit, that thought free of all content and thinking nothing, which the Brahmin found as the centre of his soul and as a refuge from the seductions of the world, from the too noisy and too bright bazaar of life that had wearied him. Thought is absolutely divine so long as it does not think; spirit is pure and calm so long as it does not dream, does not create, does not desire. But the great Brahma — that potential imagination — filled himself with real ideas and images. This is in essence the fall of Brahma. Brahma created the drowsy dream of life, the illusory, so-called real or material world. In this world, this mirage-maya, there is much that is beautiful, but its separate beauties make it still more pernicious; they do not let the human spirit notice in time the nightmare character of the whole dream, and with a terrible effort of will reject its supposed individual being, and wake upon the bosom of Brahma, in non-being. It is not by dying an ordinary death that one must do this — that is an act within the depths of the same dream — but by tearing oneself out of its bonds with thought: that is the victory. The sacred verse says of this:
When he is freed from every desire of the heart,
The mortal enters into Brahma here, on earth, already immortal.[E48]
But is this resurrection upon the bosom of Brahma not a complete rejection of life? Of course. The Brahmin thinks he is denying as evil only a part of life — passion, desires, emotions, sensations — but leaving his spirit, his pure reason, to live the more pure a life; yet he is mistaken. His philosophy is a far-reaching extension of the gospel proposition: "if one of thy members offend thee, cut it off and cast it from thee; for it is better that one member perish, than that thy whole body should perish." (cf. Matt. 5:29–30)[E49] The Brahmin found that all the members and all the faculties of his soul offended him; he cut them all off with the spiritual knife and psychologically cast them away. An immobile spirit, he said to himself — a bodiless spirit! But here precisely lies the error. It is life itself, in its passionate impulse, that errs. Seeing that happiness is bound up with moral downfall and with suffering both moral and physical, life in the image of the Indian sage, in search of pure happiness, substituted for it repose — even absolute repose; but repose is the negation of both happiness and life.
Life as it were set itself the goal of remaining itself — of freeing itself from the body and continuing to vibrate outside the organism, the nerves, the brain; whereas a bodiless spirit does not exist, as music cannot exist without a vibrating body. An immobile spirit, no longer agitated by anything, for every agitation has become pain. But an immobile spirit is its own negation. We call spirit precisely the highest form of our mobility. In a word, here there is a terrible aberration of organic life, trampled by the monstrous results of the unusual functions of its organs. The ideal becomes at last something wholly contemptible. Renan relates: "I saw in an Egyptian village, on the border of the desert, an Eastern saint. For twenty years he had remained there, on the sand, in a sitting posture, plunged in a sombre sleep, no longer seeing, no longer hearing. His legs were dry as the bones of a skeleton. The sun, devouring his skull, had dried up in him all consciousness; he deserved the name of living being far less than a reed or a palm tree."
"What is the Brahmin's god?" asks Oldenberg — and answers: "The great One, before whom every human striving falls silent, where all colours fade and all sounds die away. There is neither hymn nor prayer, nor hope, nor fear, nor love. Man's gaze is invariably turned inward and strives in the depth of his own being to disclose his I as something eternal, one; in a mysterious word full of deep meaning the thinker, from before whom the veil has been lifted, discovers the secret of the unseen seer, the unheard hearer, for the knowledge of whom the Brahmins leave their property, their wives and children, and wander as homeless beggars over the wide world."
It is hard to say how widely this doctrine penetrated into the masses, or whether it was widespread at all outside the Brahmin caste. In any case, by this creed only a Brahmin could be saved. Other men and animals had to attain by their merits the right — to be born again into the world in a higher form and at last as a Brahmin. The hierarchy of happiness coincided for Brahmanism completely with the zoological and social-caste hierarchy. Among the people, moreover, the Brahmins maintained all superstitions, pointing to sacrifice — rich, generous sacrifice — as the highest merit in the eyes of the gods. Wealthy people could be saved by sacrifices, Brahmins by knowledge of the Vedas and by reflection. For the rest the path of salvation was in essence closed; they were not interested in them. There was widespread, so to speak, an uncanonised conviction that even a sudra might rise high, but only at the price of unheard-of privations and self-mortifications.
The revolution of the Buddha was bound up with the rise of the self-consciousness of the middle and lower estates. 26

The Buddhists, adhering philosophically altogether to Brahmanism, first of all vulgarised this doctrine, made it fairly simple and comprehensible to everyone. The path of cognition ceased to be a privilege of the priests. Secondly, they rejected all significance in sacrifices: the path of salvation ceased to be a privilege of the rich. Thirdly, they rejected all significance in asceticism, in the mortification of the flesh: the path of salvation ceased to be a painful privilege of exceptional natures. They rejected superstitions. Far from being, as Nietzsche asserts, a fully positive religion, Buddhism nonetheless strove to fuse its metaphysical doctrine with the psychological experience of each.
As the path of salvation, leading to birth in new higher forms and at last to liberation, to nirvana, which replaced the return to the bosom of Brahma, there was recommended a poor manner of life and in general the struggle with one's own egoism.
The hierarchy of salvation ceased to coincide with the social hierarchy. On the contrary, everything was turned upside down. In his beautiful studies of Buddhism Renan says:
"The success of Buddhism is explained in particular by its attractiveness for the poor. The beggars saw in the new religion a means of livelihood. 27
27
The monk's garment raised them up and made their poverty respectable. In a certain comedy a gambler who has lost everything consoles himself with the possibility of becoming a Buddhist — "then I shall walk along the roads, holding my head high". Becoming a Buddhist, a slave obtained freedom. A whole mass of legends strives to prove that salvation is easier for the poor man than for the rich. Even the god laments his high origin: 'For the high-born salvation and the religious life are hard, for the low-born they are easy.'" 28
In essence the thought of the Buddhist philosophers went along the same path as the thought of the Brahmins. The pessimistic nihilism of the latter was almost surpassed:
"The hermit," says a Buddhist philosophical book, "the hermit, like a bird born in the egg, breaks the shell. I have attained immortality — deep, calm, luminous, beyond thought. Silent I shall remain in the shadow of the forests, in the depth of my own nature. There is no substance. Whoever knows the chain of causes and effects knows also that there is neither being nor non-being."
"Love, sacrifice, self-affirmation have no value whatever; this world does not exist, and the world to come does not exist either. There are no gods. Man is made of four elements; having lived his time, he gives earth to earth and water to water, fire to fire and wind to wind, while his feeling rises into the ether and disperses. Four men carry the coffin, five in all, and they burn the man according to the rites. The bones become white salt, and the body burns in the flame of the pyre. Ignoramus or sage, whoever asserts that something exists — after death you will be destroyed and annihilated."[E50] "The state of freedom resembles dreamless sleep." Hardly can such doctrines bear any other name than that of pessimistic nihilism. Nietzsche, however, finds Buddhism optimistic. On this occasion, incidentally, his opinion is not explained by his extreme subjectivism, for the same thing is striven for in his very interesting work by Prof. Oldenberg. 29
The point is that, having become widely spread, Buddhism lost its purity. The goal — nirvana — receded into the background, and the path of abstinence and altruism, granting calm of spirit and relative happiness, became everything. Buddhism acquired idyllic features that make it kin to Franciscanism. It lost its tartness and impetuosity, became a slow ascent towards that same nirvana, now gone far away — an ascent not devoid of pleasantness. Its hygienic elements conquered or somewhat pushed aside its metaphysics. In its doctrine that abstinence and the suppression of all excessive emotions, as also contempt for wealth and other worldly affairs, grant a happy frame of mind, Buddhism rested on psychological experience. It is this side of it that for a time conquered almost the whole of India, and it reigns to this day in Ceylon and Indo-China. But in India the simple and harmonious doctrine of the Buddha again receded before the pressure of the higher castes on the one side and of the spirit of superstition and the passion for infinitely tangled and brightly coloured myths on the other. The civilisation of the middle class, the democratic enlightened monarchy of Asoka, collapsed. With it there collapsed, definitively now, every hope of the social and political greatness of India. Incidentally, Asoka's moral dominion too was, as his edicts show, too little warlike and too little self-conscious for that time. Perhaps that is what ruined it.
The spread of Buddhism among the Mongols was accompanied by an astonishing distortion of it, upon which we shall not dwell here.
A good characterisation of moderate Buddhism, more or less accommodated to life, is the following page from Renan's book, already cited by us.
"The ideal of Asoka, that Buddhist Constantine, is a state religion in whose service there would be numerous officials governing the people for its happiness and instructing it. Respect for every life in general, the prohibition of killing — that is the basis of Asoka's morality. Absolute power is turned to the propagation of useful trees and medicinal herbs, to the planting of gardens to provide shade and rest for men and animals, to the digging of wells and ponds along the roads. The aim of the government is the happiness of men and animals. It is summarised in one of Asoka's stone edicts as follows: 'Thus speaks King Piyadasi, beloved of the gods: religion is excellent. But what is religion? The diminution of evil, the increase of good, piety, charity, truthfulness and purity of life.' Earthly happiness is not despised, though eternal salvation is preferred to it. In any case no rupture is recognised between them: what gives a calm and happy life on earth serves salvation too. In this lies the strength of moderate Buddhism, as of moderate Christianity. But both religions in their moderate expression are nonetheless deprived of creative energy, of any fighting spirit. They are religions of human defence, not of advance. The place of labour is taken by morality — and not the morality of expanding life, but of moderation and mutual pity. Nietzsche's striving to give Buddhism the advantage over Christianity could not lead him to the truth. Christianity even became more active than Buddhism, accommodating itself to the needs of more active races.
Indian philosophical-religious thought created, and brought to the highest purity, a peculiar device for struggling with evil by diminishing man's demands. Later a similar doctrine could be recommended as a moral-hygienic system by the Cynics and Epicureans, with no relation to religion at all. But Indian cynicism is higher and nobler than European cynicism, and more attractive to the human heart, precisely in that it is a religion. And it is not the presence of a deity (Brahma) that matters here. In pure Pali Buddhism God plays absolutely no role. What matters is nonetheless the victorious reconciliation of the laws of life and the laws of the universe. Let life have crippled its ideal by substituting repose for it: in any case the moral law of life — self-redemption, self-liberation, self-purification — is proclaimed in Buddhism the single law of the world. What is the world? — A heap of souls in various stages of salvation, at various distances from luminous repose. Deprived of this metaphysics, Indian philosophy turns into that vulgar hygiene of personal well-being by renunciation of every ideal, which is what cynicism and its forms amount to. The pessimism of Ecclesiastes, the representation of the world as vanity of vanities (Eccl. 1:2; 12:8)[E51], adjoins the philosophy of the Indians only on one side; the latter is deeper. It is after all not simple senseless vanity, but a process of self-purification. On the later philosophy of the Greeks (the Neoplatonists and Neopythagoreans) there are perhaps visible direct Indian influences, though of course the same results might have come about through independent work of thought in the terrible setting of the disintegration of the ancient world. The features of an anticosmic religion of redemption are very noticeable too in the complex and changeable physiognomy of Christianity, especially in some interesting branches of it, such as Manichaeism. The so-called pessimistic philosophy, which found its head in Schopenhauer, is in many respects modernised Buddhism. In general, metaphysical religiosity in our sense of the word raged widely among humanity.
Summing it up briefly, one may say — it was the product of despair of transforming the real world, and therefore an impulse to free oneself from it, to save the purest part of life, called spirit, and to migrate with it by all manner of devices into another world, a world absolutely adapted to the life of this pure spirit — a world called nirvana, or by the old name of God.
But it is hard for a man thirsting for living life to hold himself at the height (doubtful, incidentally) of pure spiritualism. Mongrels are born: the striving to preserve the innocence of pure spirituality and to acquire the capital of bodily pleasures. Certain of the gifts of Mammon they wish to carry over to the bosom of God — the Spirit.[E52] This is merely a fall from the height of the religious-philosophical representation of salvation to the level of the vulgar representation: the other world must resemble the earth; it must be a "rose without thorns". And by thorns they count not only sufferings and privations but also labour, struggle, effort, creation: a "rose without thorns" is perfect blessedness. Not long ago I heard an Italian Stenterello (Punch) formulate his ideal: "mangiare bene, bere meglio e fare niente" — "to eat well, drink better and do nothing". Not only the Christian bards of paradise — such as Irenaeus and Lactantius — come close to Stenterello; not only did Mohammed develop and supplement this vulgar ideal; the newest and most refined mystics and spiritualists adjoin it too — Mr Berdyaev, for instance. True, they do not trouble themselves about drink and food, but earthly pleasures in the shining heavens of salvation they are not averse to. "Metaphysics — teaches Mr Berdyaev in his new book 30 — can teach us the consciousness that world-being must be freed from the bonds of 'matter', from the oppressive lawfulness of 'nature', that space and time must disappear like a nightmare. And this fully coincides with the very latest, the most important and most mysterious idea of religious consciousness — the transfiguration of the 'earth', the transfiguration of the 'flesh'. The age-old battle goes on against primary enslavement, enserfment, which we call 'matter', against the limitedness of all space and time — but not against 'earth', not against 'flesh'. There will be an 'earth' transfigured, not shackled by material laws, liberated, timeless and spaceless; there will be a 'flesh' transfigured, not physical but full-blooded, sensuous, mystically voluptuous and eternal, freed from all material bounds. By metaphysics this mystical presentiment may be justified, but it is only in religion that this mystery is grasped. Excellent! Matter is not wanted, but let the flesh remain. Immaterial, unfleshy flesh! Mr Berdyaev is ready to renounce the body, but not sensuality; he even wants to be full-blooded, spacelessly full-blooded!… Apart from the fact that all this is nonsense at which Stenterello himself would have had his ears wither, it is very typical: we have before us the first sign of human parasitism, for the religion described above, striving to tear spirit from matter, is a symptom that, one way or another, nature has killed in these people their human-labour capacity, has made them parasites. The first sign: a rose without thorns — idle blessedness; sensuality is preserved, and very carefully, but about creation, about the growth of forces, there is silence: it will be the life of an animal (spaceless, to be sure, but very fleshy), for whose well-being the master will provide. And the very transformation of the world into a "rose without thorns" will likewise come about apart from human labour. Man's role in it is negligible.
"For man himself, torn from the Absolute Source of being, it is impossible to attain the transfiguration of the 'earth', its liberation from spaces and times, from shacklement and necessity, and the transfiguration of the 'flesh', the affirmation of its eternal, incorruptible, individual being. But for God all things are possible." (Matt. 19:26)[E53] God will take care of everything.
We shall dwell on the mongrel of metaphysical religion and historicism — on liberal idealism — elsewhere; for now let us pass to another religious representation, the ancestor of more noble modern currents.
