Mazdeism

Stenterello's ideal — "to eat, drink and do nothing" — is a vulgar ideal; it is not only, as anyone would say at first glance, an animal ideal — it is far lower than the ideal of a normal animal; it is the ideal of a parasite. There is no doubt that needs, and precisely animal needs, give rise to the movement of that higher spirit of which the spiritualists speak so reverently: needs move progress.

But the needs of a healthy animal organism by no means come down to hunger and thirst. An animal in the happy conditions pictured by Punch's imagination, receiving food and drink in abundance, would find a source of unhappiness in the third condition — doing nothing. A well-nourished organism strives to function widely and freely. If there is no necessity to work, the animal frolics, plays. The expenditure of energy accumulated in potential form becomes a direct necessity, a question of life; fatness and degradation await whoever has not solved this new task of life.

The organs of the body are elaborated as instruments for the continuation of life. If life is secured without labour, the organs must still exercise themselves; therefore play is always an imitation of the hunt, of struggle, of labour and so on. Play is pleasanter than labour because there is in it no element of compulsion; it is elaborated according to a plan corresponding to the need. Yet even light fatigue, and sometimes even danger to life, are experienced as a need by an organism armed by heredity for struggle and not struggling. Recall all the forms of modern sport, and the enormous role it plays in the life of the classes freed from labour, or of those given over as a sacrifice to excessively one-sided labour.

Only a parasite, only an animal already degraded, which like an aphid is gradually deprived of its mobility and even of its organs, having turned into a "pure stomach", feels no need of activity. In the ideal of the harmonious man, activity enters as an element of the first necessity.

If play is higher than labour in its organisation, in its correspondence to given needs (for instance gymnastics), then labour is higher than play in its result. Purposive labour is evidently directed towards the attainment of some good, in general towards improvement. The attainment of a goal determined beforehand as a good gives man (and the animal too) a feeling of deep satisfaction. This feeling is also a weapon in the struggle: the moments of the joy of creation, of the joy of struggle, gradually eclipse with their radiance a multitude of other joys which man has justly called "lower". Successful labour is a source of joy that is durable, healing, developing. The thirst for creation can be erased from the human soul only by degrading man even as an animal. Man is a being armed for struggle, valuing everything as a good for himself or an evil, as something easily and pleasantly assimilated (beauty) or the contrary (ugliness). In the joy before the positive, in his capacity to exult before the good and the beautiful — that is, in the last analysis, before what furthers the growth of that same life and what testifies to a high degree of that development — life has a marvellous weapon, a constant stimulus to struggle and creation. And in the capacity to struggle and create lies the pledge of ever new joys. How far the aesthetic feeling of rapture before beauty, strength and richness is developed in man is evident from the cry of the Roman mob: "Panem et circenses!"

But here the voice of the parasite is already audible: both must be given to him. The worker and the artist want to create both for themselves and for others.

So life, animal life, the organs of our body, already sketch before us in the unclear voices of their demands the ideal: nourishment, exercise, creation, rejoicing. But there is no possibility of forgetting among the other needs the need of reproduction. "Love and hunger move the world," said Schiller.

In the philosopher of mystical parasitism there has remained of love only a mystical voluptuousness, pure physiology in its crudest form, despite the addition of the little word mystical. It is the ideal of a kind of onanist. The need of reproduction is infinitely broader. Take an ordinary animal and look: it is the need for closeness with a being of the other sex, the need to please it, to conquer rivals before it, to show off in its eyes; then it is love for offspring, the maternal and in general the family feeling. It would be superfluous to give examples here. Whoever does not know them, let him read Darwin's Sexual Selection.

How much physical and spiritual beauty does the sexual passion generate. It creates the greatest feeling of organised matter — love in all its ramifications: unsatisfied passion, married love, fatherly and motherly love, filial, brotherly, love for offspring, for kindred, for humanity. It is the first thing to outgrow the individual: passion is stronger than the instinct of life; maternal love, and later love for offspring and for the tribe, likewise conquer egoism. If voluptuousness suffices for the parasite, then the harmonious man needs all the branches of love. Simon, the mysterious rival of Christ, said of God: He is father and son, husband and wife, brother and sister, he is himself and friend.

Love for offspring is especially important in the religious respect. It opens distant paths to another, marvellous, and of course wholly "animal" feeling — hope. If I was not happy, then perhaps my son will be, my grandson. If I did not conquer, then a conqueror will rise out of my seed. This loving identification of oneself with the kindred, this we that conquers death and time — was especially proper to the Jewish people. It lived in them with such force that the Jew at first passed by another possibility of consolation and hope — the idea of personal immortality, of another world, an idea flowing from badly interpreted facts, hallucinations and dreams.

"We are saved by hope," says the Apostle Paul. (Rom. 8:24)[E54] Two peoples expressed this truth with enormous force — the Israelite and the Persian. Both pictured this hope as realised by distant descendants. To this day they dispute which of these two great peoples, so closely bound by love of ancestors and descendants, is the true creator of messianism, and with it of the philosophy of history. We shall have to recall the distinguishing features of the historico-religious conception of each. The Jews undoubtedly possessed a more solid feeling for the species. This is proved by the fact that there was no people more indifferent to the life beyond the grave. Amid all his sufferings the Jew looked forward and was consoled by the radiant destiny of his grandson. To die was not terrible to him. "He died, sated with life" (cf. Gen. 25:8; 35:29)[E55] — the constant end of ideal Jews. The Bible is the best illustration of the new ideas of the esteemed Professor Mechnikov. But to die childless was terrible to the Jew. A more terrible punishment he did not know. The Persian was evidently far more individualised, religiously egoistic. He did not pass by the convenient possibility of transferring the solution of the painful questions of life — into another life.

But the very proclamation of the illusion of existence beyond the grave as an "indubitable fact" takes on a different character among metaphysical peoples and among practical peoples.

Discouraged by the overwhelming nature of the conquered land, the Indian withdrew into himself. Another world, another life he proclaimed the only real one, and living, genuine life a mirage. The Persian counted reality the centre of the world. The conquest of nature, the transformation of blessed Iran into a flowering garden of joy, did not seem to him unattainable. He loved labour. He valued his brother — man, and his descendant, as a labour-force, as co-workers in his building — and therefore he used the life beyond the grave only as an instrument of morality and discipline: he who laboured, loved and was truthful will be happy after death; the liar, the idler and the man of violence will be punished. In beautiful images the author of the twenty-second Yashta depicts his ideal and with it his faith in retribution beyond the grave: "At the end of the third night (after death), when it begins to grow light, the soul of the believer seems to see his own conscience coming to meet him in the form of a luminous maiden, in white raiment, strong, slender, noble, with a proud bearing and as beautiful as one can possibly imagine.

And when the soul of the believer turns to her with the question: 'Who art thou, maiden, most beautiful of all that I have ever seen?' she will answer him: 'O thou youth who thoughtest only good things, who spokest and didst only good and pious things, I am thine own conscience. All loved thee for thy greatness, goodness, tenderness, victorious strength and freedom from sorrow; as such I appear to thee. When thou sawest a man mocking (holiness) and practising idolatry, or pushing away the poor man and shutting the door on him, then thou didst sit singing psalms and glorifying the son of the Lord, and gladdening with alms the neighbour and the stranger. They loved me — thou madest me lovelier; I was beautiful — thou madest me more beautiful still by thy good thoughts, good words and good deeds. And from henceforth men worship me.'"

But the peculiarity of the Persian was the harmonious fusion of the religion of progress and the religion of immortality. Labouring and warlike progress must end in complete victory. So unshakeably did the Persian believe in the flowering season of his civilisation. Then both heaven and earth and all the laws of the world will be changed to the root. Death will be destroyed. All the dead will rise again. They will rise not in spirit but really, in the body, which will have become eternal. The Persian did not look upon matter, upon flesh, as something base. If he thirsted for a new life, it was for a real one, not a phantom one, and he created the beautiful idea of resurrection from the dead in the flesh. The Jews and the Christians undoubtedly borrowed this idea from the Persians. Universal immortality became the reward for labour. Take self-sacrificing part in the common building, and you will rise in the flesh to make use of the fruits of your hands. You build for yourself. And note — not in the heavens, but on earth.

Everything that furthered the building: unions, methods of labour, tools, useful animals, land, sun, rain and so on, as also all the virtues of cooperation — discipline, industriousness, truthfulness, justice, knowledge and so on — was naturally declared good; everything in the order of nature and morality that hindered labour and building was declared evil. The whole world was taken as a struggle between good and evil. Both were fixed by the Persians in hosts of spirits surrounding the luminous Ahura Mazda and the black Ahriman. Divine help was assured to the labouring man. But feeling deeply man's leading role in this struggle, the Persians made the true commander of the good, of the beneficent forces of earth and heaven, in the days of the decisive battle — man — the Saviour, the personification of the forces and capacities of generations to come.

Following the victory, all rise again — all are forgiven. Evil is utterly annihilated, drowned, disappears in the ocean of light. Not only men are forgiven but the evil spirits too. They are not killed — that would be half a victory; beneath the feet of those blessed in paradise no prison of hell shudders with groans and convulsions — the evil spirits are turned to good. Only Ahriman dies. For he is the absolute minus, absolute nothing, death; he lived a phantom life so long as he could destroy, but now being, life, triumphs everywhere, and there is no corner left for darkness. Nirvana itself, so dear to the Indian, is declared phantom and definitively expelled from the universe. Maya itself — living, rosy, smiling, sweet — triumphs everywhere.

The doctrine of reward and punishment beyond the grave, developed in detail by the Persians, was evidently necessary, or at least useful, for broad social cooperation. It maintains discipline by acting on the imagination of the most vicious members of society. In our modern view this doctrine, which forms an important side of the Christian religion too, is one of the very lowest sides of religious world-feeling in general. In it we see not the flight of fantasy of a suffering man thirsting for happiness, but a calculating construction meant to paralyse vices by physical fear and the promise of reward — and incidentally to paralyse individual freedom too. The destruction of the representation of hell and paradise marks a great step forward in the development of man's inner freedom. The strengthened feelings of rejoicing before the good created wholly or partly by man's efforts, and of grief over the evil done to life and development — these prove sufficient forces; a man is deeply insulted to hear that he is to be rewarded for the first and punished with unheard-of, barbarous cruelty for the second. God the judge, God the policeman, God the executioner becomes unnecessary and at the same time repulsive.

Persian thought itself conquered this construction by its own higher idea of the resurrection of living flesh into eternal life and of the forgiveness of sinners.

Mazdeism in this case is positively and indisputably higher than Christianity. It still supposes a purgatory, as a kind of bath of almost voluntary suffering to wash the filth of vice from the face of the sinner, so that he may walk without shame beside his luminous brothers the righteous; but the idea of an eternal torture-chamber Mazdeism resolutely casts aside. The loving lips of Jesus, if we believe the Gospels, uttered mercilessly cruel, bestial words about "the fire that is not quenched, the worm that dieth not" (Mark 9:48)[E56], about "gnashing of teeth" (e.g. Matt. 8:12)[E57] for eternal ages. And all this will be done by the will of the Father, whom we are to imitate[E58]. Imitating him as far as we can, we weak mortals could only roast heretics alive and boil soup from witches. The loving father was logically transformed in the Calvinists into a capricious and inexorable tormentor. Ormuzd torments no one. He leads all to the good, to happiness, to the light. If there is suffering on the way — it is because the power of evil outside oneself and in oneself must be overcome. Suffering is the purification of the world. Ormuzd himself suffers for his children and himself struggles — but he is truly good.

But the idea of personal resurrection too does not fit within the framework of the modern scientific world-view. For modern consciousness, the promises of religion that clearly contradict science, or are infinitely different from its language and its assertions, prove too fragile and light-weight. No educated man, strictly speaking, believes in personal resurrection, even if he tries to assure himself and others that he does. If he builds the edifice of his religion on this sand[E59], then in moments of sincere reflection, seeing how the edifice sways and creaks under the pressure of the cold waters of thought, he will live through torments worse than death — the torments of parting with a phantom of eternal life, and not with a brief life. Let us not wish those torments of poisonous doubt even on the bitterest enemies of truth.

But if faith in personal resurrection is already impossible for the sceptical soul of modern man, then on the other hand it is also not necessary. The genius of Mazdeism reckoned with the organism's thirst to prolong indefinitely its own existence and to foretaste the coming sweet fruits of its labours, ripening at some time, awaiting him personally as pleasures. But the Jews, right up to their acquaintance with Persian religiosity, dreamed only of happiness for their descendants. Tribal egoism is now melting away; the international idea of the brotherhood of all men has been proclaimed by Christianity, by science, and by the grown feeling of sympathy. The coming humanity will replace the coming Jewry. The chief thing is the gradual growth of the feeling of the connection of the whole species. This feeling goes parallel with the feeling of collective building. An English proverb says: "have a child, or write a book, or plant a tree." That is the new immortality.

In all strong communities (among the Greeks, especially among the Romans) the personality went deeply into national building, sacrificed itself for the whole, for the future, for the City, the Empire, without effort and joyfully; our future was experienced as one's own, because the "I" was acknowledged a part of the whole. Plato, a child of decadence, despite his doctrine of the immortality of the soul, said that a noble man must leave a trace of himself either in the memory of friends or in a book. The thirst for personal immortality, the overvaluation of one's own I, grows with the decline in strength of this or that community dear to man. Individualism is the offspring of social decadence. In its great epochs, art developed organically. Artists knew how to subordinate their individuality to the common aim and elaborated a great style. The epoch of the Renaissance is considered deeply individualistic.

Its best fruit was art: and here we see two signs of the capacity to detach oneself, not to seek originality at any cost (the vice of our art), but in collective work to be able to take one's own note harmonising with the whole choir — two signs: the existence of successively developing schools, and great architecture. The artists of the Renaissance consciously begin where the preceding generation ended; helping one another, they seriously and at times deeply self-sacrificingly concern themselves with the development of the object, of art. Beginning with Petrarch, the thirst for immortality decisively acquires the character of a thirst for glory, for good memory among posterity.

At the present time only science really progresses; art is living through a time of discord and decline. And in science we see the same succession, the same building; and among scholars there is the greatest number of men selflessly believing in progress, living the life of their object, of science.

Love of the far-off and love of phantoms — that is what Nietzsche proclaimed. By phantoms he understood not chimeras in general but those super-individual beings which in the eyes of the egoist, the individualist, are phantoms, and in the eyes of the true man are essence. To live for science, art, technical progress and so on means to find one's immortality in building. Where thy treasure is, there will thy soul be also. (cf. Matt. 6:19–21)[E60] Leave then the true treasure on earth: your soul will remain on earth with it. Building the wondrous palace of culture, I commune intimately with past and future generations. Cooperating with them, I remain with them so long as their work continues. And already in this life I feel this my immortality. Think about science, its future, the theoretical and practical prospects it opens, and eternity will illuminate your soul for a moment; you will be fused really for one minute with the cognising reason and the creative building of divine humanity. That is why, with the growth of collectivism and of the collectively creative principle, the cult of the future will be cleansed of the egoistic admixture, of the fable of personal resurrection. The new religion of humanity must be free of fantastic postulates; the real prospects of science and of creation, if one enters into them, are more luxurious than any fantasy. Let us be fused with the species, let us struggle for its perfection and its immortality. It — that is thou!

As useful as the idea of hell and paradise and of personal resurrection was for still weak humanity, so was the idea of the help of the gods. The clear and practical mind of the Persian was equally far from cosmism, which absorbs man and subordinates him to nature, and from a harsh spiritualism that tears the universe into spirit and matter. The Mazdean Persian loves nature, reveres it, finds in it his brothers, patrons and allies — but in it too he finds evil, hostile forces. Likewise in the sphere of spirit he acknowledges as something primordial both the virtues and the vices. Of course fetishism, which exalted this or that phenomenon of nature to the rank of deity, distorted experience and the procedures of labour, abundantly mixing myths and magical practices into them. All that has definitively outlived its time. But apart from this natural distortion, faith in mighty luminous and beautiful allies, with the mysterious, loving and holy Ormuzd at their head — strengthened the confidence of warlike and agricultural Iran in its own forces in the struggle with the elements and the nomads of the country.

Mazdeism was the religion of labour in embryonic form; this religion could not fail to be born in the membrane of mysticism. Later man will become convinced that if among the phenomena of nature there are some useful to man and some harmful, some beautiful and some ugly, then there are neither good nor evil ones, for they harm and help without any feeling and calculation. Therefore one cannot revere them, thank them and so on. Fetishism was evaporated out of the human world-view by science. But while the help of the gods was needed, such an expulsion of spirituality from earth, sun, stars, wind, sea, seemed hard and sad. Only when man's own strength began to inspire him with confidence, only in the advanced strata of present-day humanity, did the gods definitively cease to be needed and receive a clean discharge.

Christianity is undoubtedly lower than Mazdeism in the cultural respect. Not for nothing did the emperor Khosrow pour contempt on the Christians. For him these were haters of labour and lovers of idleness, people wallowing in filth, exhausting the flesh by abstinence from the satisfaction of natural needs, turning their life into a petty war with the petty demons that tempted them. To deny that in pure Christianity there is a condemnation of labour, of well-being, of earthly progress — only hypocritical saviours of religion can do that.

All these typical Marthas, spiritual and secular[E61], exhaust themselves to reconcile Christian world-denial with their philistinism. They deprive labour of religious character, constantly raising their eyes on high and observing that of course the heavenly treasure is higher than the earthly one[E62]; and they cripple Christian consistency for the sake of the practical tasks of life. What is labour, wealth, cares, accumulation, economic activity, if it is not illuminated by the higher idea of movement towards the perfection of the species, towards widened creation, towards freedom, towards a flowering, beautiful, upright life? What are all the labours of man on earth, if they are not understood as building, as the re-creation of the world on the principles of reason for the infinitely widening enjoyment of the beautiful, strong, confident, bold, rational being that man is becoming? Outside these prospects, outside a religious-philosophical understanding of economy — they are only service to Mammon[E63], only vanity of vanities. (Eccl. 1:2; 12:8)[E64] But the angel-like Marthas are afraid to acknowledge labour and wealth as solely saving, because then labour would say: if I alone save, and the goal is in wealth — that is, in the possibility of widely satisfying needs and growing mightily, resting on goods already acquired by labour — then I am master, and wealth belongs to labour, and labour must take it for itself, this its only earthly reward.[E65] "No, no," write the pastors, the professors and the other Marthas: "above all are virtue, modesty, patience, moderation, obedience; for these you will find an incorruptible crown. (cf. 1 Cor. 9:25)[E66] And labour — that is neither here nor there, a temporary occupation in the brief moment of earthly life. One must labour not in order to become rich, to enjoy and to grow, but in order that heaven may be pleased with you. There the spirits will pay. Wealth — it is even harmful. Oh! let us pity the poor millionaires… however will they get into the kingdom of heaven?[E67]" Pitiful Marthas, busied about many things, but timidly glancing sometimes at Christ, now and then running up to him with a kindly word or a complaint against lazy Mary.[E61]

But the labouring man contemptuously thrusts aside the half-hearted botching of Martha and passes by the ecstasies of the exalted Mary[E61]: he builds solidly, broadly. In the labour of building he finds his enjoyment. From the sorrow of life he flees to work, and laying stone upon stone for the royal palace of the divine grandson, his own dear, beloved scion, he says, admiring what is already done and ecstatically completing in fantasy what remains to be done: "If not I, then thou." How much that is sorrowful, dirty, infirm will pass into history when you enter life, radiant new man. But remember that your beauty grew upon my suffering. So do not rest, do not settle upon your laurels, go forward, dream of the most beautiful. There is no limit to our desires. Grow, life; let there be God in the world; let us raise the infinity of the rationally sovereign spirit before the infinite diversity of nature; let there rise upon the beautiful, unimaginable pedestal[E68] of the universe and of the past the shining figure of the man-god, whose beauty only faintly glimmers in my imagination, sweetly stirring my soul — the soul of a half-animal, the soul of your ancestor, poor, infirm, but strong in his faith, equal to you, mighty, harmonious one, equal to you in his longing for the ideal and in his self-sacrificing cry: "Ever forward!"

No religion came so close to the nascent religion of labour as Mazdeism. Zoroaster is one of the greatest prophets of humanity. But the most precious thing in his doctrine was by no means inherited by the impostor Zarathustra;[E69] he will not replace with his beautiful and tragic coquetry the stately image of the Persian who looked far ahead, who was the first to see a new earth, a new heaven, and man as king between them[E70].

To find again that same thread, lost with the fall of Persian culture, one must pass by both marble Hellas and iron Rome and the dark Middle Ages and the restless Renaissance, and only in the New Atlantis of Bacon of Verulam, one of the founders of empirical science, shall we find a reflection of faith in labour and progress. Then — Condorcet, the great Saint-Simon, Marx.[E71] Growing faith in labour, in proportion as technique grows. A new posing of the question of wealth and justice. The first chord of the finale of the painful overture humanity has lived through.

The path of progress is broken and undulating. But shall we really, once again at the threshold of the promised land, which our Moseses already see from the mountain, have to turn back into the desert for a new age-long wandering?[E72] Let us be watchful, let us be bold, let us be active. We were born to live in a critical time. In this is our curse, in this is our happiness.
