Chapter IV. Anthropologism and Cosmism in Religion

Ludwig Feuerbach draws in his Essence of Christianity a curious parallel between the religious character of the Greeks and the Jews.

It is usually accepted that Jewish monotheism is the highest expression of mystical spiritualism: it is God the Spirit, in all absolute qualities infinitely different from limited humanity. The one God, at least in his later understanding among the prophets, is the least anthropomorphic God. On the contrary, who does not know that the Greek so assimilated the gods to men that the strange adventures and unpardonable weaknesses of the Olympians were a source of scandal to even slightly elevated minds. And yet the true representative of the anthropological type in religion, the creator of a purely human religion, was rather precisely the Jewish people; while behind the most anthropomorphic deities of Greece, as behind its later Platonic and post-Platonic God the Spirit, there was hidden in essence the same old cosmos. The Jews worshipped in their all-embracing, incomprehensible Sabaoth — human nature; the Greeks worshipped in their man-gods the laws of non-human nature. The Greek religion is in form almost man-worship, but in essence it is further from man-worship than Judaism. Judaism in form is the religion of the slave-man, a man-debasing religion, but in essence it is the first form of a purely human religion.

In Feuerbach we find the following thought: "The study of nature is the adoration of nature — idolatry in the sense of the Israelite and Christian God; and idolatry is nothing other than man's primary contemplation of nature. The Jews, however, rose above idolatry to the cult of God, above the creature to the contemplation of the Creator — that is, they rose above the theoretical contemplation of nature, which enchanted the idolater, to a purely practical contemplation, subordinating nature to the aims of egoism. 'When thou lookest up to heaven and seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, the whole host of heaven, fall not away from the Lord nor worship them, which the Lord thy God hath bestowed upon all nations on earth' (Deuteronomy 4.19)[E73]. Only in the unattainable depth and might of Jewish egoism was there born also the idea of the creation of the world out of nothing, the idea of creation as a simple imperative act; it contains and expresses nothing other than the command to turn nature not into an object of thought and contemplation, but into an object of use and enjoyment."[E74]

Let us leave aside for the present the form of either religion, and attend only to the inevitable conclusion from each. Judaism is the expression of a practical need; in it man expresses such a postulate: the rational spirit must reign over nature, mightily changing it according to its will, enjoying it. Hellenism is the expression of contemplative rapture, and its practical conclusion inevitably sounds: nature is beautiful and mighty, it is its own end, its laws are sacred and invariable, man must reverently bow before them, his happiness consists in voluntarily submitting: fata volentem ducunt, nolentem trahunt. 31

Throw out the form, the deity, the theology — and what will remain?

Pure economism with the formula: the subjection of nature to man — for Judaism; scientific fatalism with the formula: the subjection of man to the laws of being — for Hellenism. The revolutionary faith that all that is rational will become actual — for Judaism; the conservative proposition that all that is actual is rational — for Hellenism.[E75]

So: haughty claims to kingdom and divinity — for the first; humble acknowledgement of oneself as a dependent part — for the second. Feuerbach understood this. But carried away by his love for luminous Hellas and its enormous cultural advantages, and perhaps too by his hatred of the dominant religion, the daughter of the Jewish religion, he extremely unjustly belittled Judaism before Hellenism. Here is a talented page in which an instructive parallel is drawn between them, allowing one to look deeply into the heart of both religions: "The author of the Book of Wisdom (ch. 13) says rightly that the heathen, through their wonder before the beauty of the world, did not rise to the concept of its creator.[E76] For whom nature is a beautiful being, for him it appears as its own end; he finds the cause of its being in itself, and in him the question does not arise: why does it exist? The concepts of nature and of deity are identified in his consciousness, in his world-view. Nature, as he contemplates it, has for him arisen, has formed itself, but is not created in the proper sense, in the religious sense: for him it is not a product of arbitrary will, a handiwork.

The creative force is for him the first force; the ground of nature he considers the force of nature itself; the force that exists, that visibly acts before his eyes, he considers the cause of all things. So thinks the man who relates to nature aesthetically and theoretically (for theoretical contemplation is originally aesthetic contemplation; aesthetics is prima philosophia), identifying the concept of the world with the concept of the cosmos, of the glory of divinity. Only where such a view animated man could such a thought as Anaxagoras's — that man is born for the contemplation of the world — arise and be uttered. The starting point of theory is harmonious union with the world. But where man takes the practical standpoint and looks at the world from it, there he diverges from nature and turns it into the obedient serving-maid of his personal interests, of his practical egoism. The theoretical expression of this egoistic practical view, which acknowledges nature in itself as nothing, is this: nature or the universe is created, made: it is the product of a command. The Lord said: let there be light, and there was light (Gen. 1:3)[E77] — that is, God commanded, 'let the world be created,' and it was at once created by his command."

"Utilitarianism, usefulness, is the governing principle of Judaism."[E74]

If it is evident that between the Jewish force of will and faith in will as an absolute force, and the Hellenic faith in law as an inflexibly sovereign force, a synthesis must be found (and this is what scientific socialism is working out), it is nonetheless clear too that the essence of the religion of the grown man, of the religion of the revolutionary and the labourer — the proletarian — will be closer to anthropologism than to cosmism. One may even say with confidence that the conservative classes must sooner or later seize upon cosmism, in order to counterpose to the revolutionary will of the labouring man the appeal to invariable laws; to the beauty of the ideal of might, solidarity and justice — the beauty of eternal order; to the untiringly active spirit — the poetry of rapture and contemplative self-renunciation.
