The Tendencies of Judaism

Feuerbach considers the cause of the Jews' absolute monotheism to be their tribal egoism:[E74] "God, according to Philo, granted Moses power over all nature; everything obeyed him as its lord. The needs of Israel constitute the almighty world-law; they determine the destiny of the whole world. Jehovah is Israel's acknowledgement of the sanctity and necessity of its own existence — a necessity before which the being of nature and of other peoples is nothing. Jehovah is the good of the people (salus populi), the salvation of Israel, to which everything must be sacrificed; he is exclusive monarchical egoism, the all-destroying fire of wrath in the flaming eyes of vindictive Israel. In a word, Jehovah is the I of Israel, which has acknowledged itself the final end and lord of nature. Thus, glorifying nature, Israel glorified the might of Jehovah and the power of its own self-consciousness. 'Praise God. He is our helper God. God is our saviour. Jehovah, God — my strength.'" (cf. Ps. 68:19–20; Hab. 3:19)[E78]

Undoubtedly this is to a considerable degree so. The enormous self-consciousness, the almost supernatural force of life of the Jews, which has made them an eternal people despite the persecution of fate — this instinct of life, elaborated by a living tribe amid measureless deserts, unfolded in holy wars for fertile land with the settled Chaldeans, tempered under the terrible blows of conquerors — this strong, tenacious instinct of a great little people expressed itself in the monstrous form of Jehovah. The lower the people fell in reality, the higher it raised itself ideally, in its God.

But it is not only a matter of egoism. The Semitic nomad, the man of the desert, created his gods amid a monotonous nature, neither variegated nor full of sap. The broad dome of the sky, full of solemnly moving luminaries, embracing the monotonous plain — that is the most marvellous thing he sees. And the stars are only the bright army of the god, for behold he rises, and his flaming countenance reigns majestically, alone. The sun — Baal, Moloch, Melkart — suppresses the other gods by its presence. Jehovah is their brother. A profound connoisseur of the Eastern religions, James Darmesteter, says: "Aryan and Semitic religions form two distinct groups. In the first we find everywhere, under various names, a god of the sky and a goddess of the waters; everywhere a rich polytheism, the deification of all the forces of nature; dualism, the struggle of the gods with demons, which the phenomena of the storm nourish; everywhere whole hosts of graceful or dangerous spirits. On the other side, the peoples of Semitic speech strive towards a strict unity. Everywhere Baal, Moloch or Jehovah, suppressing the rest of nature by his flaming brilliance." 32

That Jehovah faintly resembles a sun-god proves nothing. Monotheism was created out of a broad and faceless animism. The spirits of the desert have no sharply defined individuality — they are elohim in general, the spiritual element in general, finding their lord, like the other spirits, in the phenomenon that infinitely surpasses all others — the sun. The majority of the Semites stopped at sun-worship. But the tribe that lived at the foot of Sinai (the Kenites) replaced in its religious fantasy the terrible but calm deity with another, no less majestic but more living one. Among the spirits there emerged for them the one who thunders in the terrible storms of Sinai and sends the lightning.

The "El" of Mount Sinai, the thunderer Yahu, the Existing One[E79] — was summoned as witness to the compact between the twelve Hebrew tribes. From that time he became the god of national unity. He inherited the majesty of the one God, acquired still more dread and living features, and became the god of the people as distinct from foreign gods and from the gods of families and clans. Jehovah's struggle for predominance would be the struggle of the principle of unity and independence of the newly formed union, of the people, against foreign and separate gods. We shall trace Jehovah's further destiny in the next chapter. For the present, what has been said suffices to clarify the primary causes of monotheism — those supports which helped Israel rise to such a conception: a spirit close to us, like us, loving us, our ally — above all the forces of nature, he can do everything. So it was necessary to glorify the god of unity; political necessity demanded it, the very life of the people. Every victory and success the Jehovists ascribed to their god, but in failures they blamed the people. The whole history was turned into a legend for the sake of saving Jehovah's might. Thus Israel elaborated a faith astonishing in its passionate intensity — that the spirit, after the image and likeness of our spirit[E80], is stronger than the elements that are alien and incomprehensible to us, that it is the creator and lord of nature. And this consoling and proud position the peoples of the world received as a gift from Israel. "What a contrast," exclaims Renan: "instead of a nature animated and living, Judaism elaborated the representation of a nature somehow dry and barren, if I may so express myself. What an enormous distance separates the harsh and simple representation of a single God torn away from the world, and of a nature created by him as a pot is by a potter[E81], from the Indo-European theogony, which animated and deified nature and understood the universe as eternal changeability."

True, this assurance of the victory of reason, of the absolute might of spirit and will, was bought at the price of its estrangement from man. Could the man of that time speak of his own reason, his own will, as of divine and sovereign super-elements? Evidently not. A myth had to be created of a super-will, a super-reason, a super-man. But it was only an enormous shadow of man cast upon the sky. And moreover in all the purity of his spirituality, his most human quality[E82], his will to might. "Israel was of course not God's chosen one," says Darmesteter: "he himself, in the sweat of his brow, created him for himself[E83]." As we shall see later, the will to might received, thanks to Israel's historical destiny, a supplement in the shape of a "thirst for justice." And here the same process took place, and Darmesteter rightly observes: "The prophets spoke in the name of Jehovah; the new world speaks in the name of human thought; but Jehovah was only the apotheosis of the human soul, the human conscience projected upon the heavens."

From all that has been said it is already evident that the belittling of Judaism in comparison with Hellenism, which is brightly evident in Feuerbach, cannot be acknowledged correct. It must be noted further that the force of life of the Israelite tribe showed itself not only in tenacity and in the will to might expressed in Jehovah, but also in a profound realism. Only the later, decadent, so to speak, Judaism was partly imbued with the mysticism of other Eastern religions. Into Christianity mysticism poured in a broad wave, among other things precisely out of joyous Greece. "Joyous" Greece began to decompose considerably earlier than the fatal wars of Athens and Sparta; it created, partly borrowing from the East, a cult of the life beyond the grave, even a cult of death as deliverance. We know that in this too there shows itself the thirst for life — refracted, dispersed, disfigured. But Judaism, so untiringly logical in developing its fantastic representation of the Almighty, was deeply realistic in its conception of life. The distinction of soul and body was very vague for the Jews, and the life of the soul outside and after the body did not interest them at all. And yet this was the most religious people on the globe and in human history. Renan rightly says of Judaism:

"A mighty tradition of idealism and of some paradoxical power of hope — a religion whose confessors went to every kind of sacrifice, while it promised them nothing beyond the limits of earthly life."

And the Jewish religion conquered the world in its own peculiar way. Noting the Jewish origin of Christianity, Darmesteter continues:

"Mohammed, who came out of the school of the Jews and of the Jewish Christians, founds Islam, whose dogma coincides with the Jewish dogma but is lowered in accordance with the narrower mind in which it was reflected. The mythology of Islam too is rabbinical and Judaeo-Christian. Thus, beginning with the seventh century A.D., two Jewish colonies populate the region of human thought — colonies struggling with the metropolis, cursing and denying it. They not only persecute the followers of the mother religion, but — what is far worse — each distorts its principles in its own way: the Christian West retained its mythical spirit, introducing dogmas into it and thereby forcing science to silence or to blasphemy; the Arab East turned God from a law of reason into a royal arbitrary will, which soon led to passivity and ignorance."

Darmesteter decidedly disagrees with the claim that Jewry has outlived itself, that its historical mission ended with the birth of Christianity. He notes the enormous services of Jewry in the Middle Ages. It was they who preserved for us, in the fully tolerant environment of Moorish culture, the best possession of ancient thought. Their living thought stood against dogma. Darmesteter vividly depicts the fate of Jewry after the dispersion and speaks of the position of the Jew as bearer of the mother religion among Christians:

"The hatred of the peoples for the Jews was to a considerable degree brought up by the church, but the church also tries to protect the Jews from the storms it has itself raised. And that is because it fears the Jew and needs him: for Christianity is founded on his book — and is it not terrible that he possesses the secret of that book, that he may be the judge of the faith of his judges? Sometimes by a smile, an accidental word, he lets it be understood that he condemns it, and considers himself able to point out its defects and errors. He is a demon holding the key of the sanctuary. Hence the priest's great dream: not to burn the Jew, but to convert him."

The historian Froissart naively relates of Louis the Saint:

"A great folly he (St Louis) committed in instituting disputations; for before those disputations ended, many Christians were shaken in the faith, being unable to disentangle themselves from the objections of the Jews. Then the king said that no one but learned clerics should dispute with a Jew; a layman, when he hears a Jew censure the faith, should not defend it with arguments, but with the sword, thrusting it into the Jew's belly as far as it will go."

A living faith would not have come to such treatment of a dead faith.

But Jewry, which had separated off from itself the branches of Christianity and Mohammedanism — two syntheses with initially alien spiritual currents — did not stop in its religious creation, astonishing the world. Spinoza was the creator of a new great religion.

How could it happen that the founder of the highest form of pantheism, the first true monist, was a Jew? It seems to me that here too James Darmesteter penetrated deeply into the connection of ideas: he notes the inclination of the Jews to pantheism; every Jewish philosophy, having freed itself and outgrown belief in a personal God, arrives at pantheism: the Kabbala, Spinoza, Maimonides. "Monotheism naturally turns into naturalistic monism with the falling away of God."

Spinoza took an enormous step in two directions: in cleansing the heavens of the phantom born of human fantasy, and in reconciliation with nature. Causa sui was placed above the will, as caprice, as changeable arbitrariness. God's will was declared lawful. With this proclamation magic, myths and prayers fell away, the miracle was expelled: there remained the law, which can be known, and the labour of man thirsting to avoid evil and striving towards the good, which according to Spinoza is the same life in its expansion.

Nature became a part of God — not his handiwork, not his garment, but his body, his lawful side (an attribute). God was, so to speak, made lawful, and nature deified. But in Spinoza there remains still the acknowledgement of the moral character of substance; it is beneficent, and one must revere it. The identification of God's will with the laws of nature brought Spinoza's Judaism closer to cosmism. His religion is penetrated with a calm love. Man kisses the hem of the robe of the god-substance; he must know his place. The Jewish and the Hellenic reverences merge.[E84] The Jewish postulate of the triumph of the living spirit is thrown out, and so is the revolt that broke through among the Greeks from time to time.

The doctrine of Marx appeared as a still higher synthesis. It was the fifth great religion formulated by Jewry. In scientific socialism the Jewish realism found expression again, and with enormous force. In it there are not and cannot arise any transcendent representations. It is the religion of the development of the species, of striving towards might by way of organisation, science and technology. But the goal of life is seen not in the contentment and utility of Bentham with his bookkeeping of advantages and disadvantages, of which Marx spoke so contemptuously[E85], nor in well-being, but in conscious furtherance of the development of humanity.

In the end, in the eyes of scientific socialism there is nothing higher than the human species. Its successes are furthered consciously or unconsciously by the progressive classes, and individuals likewise, consciously or unconsciously, are taken up by their classes. Classes and nations are, as it were, organs and modes of all-human society, in their struggle determining its destiny; individuals are modes, living manifestations of their classes, receiving from them their mental cast, and by and large determined in their own destiny by the destiny of those classes.

That practicalism which Feuerbach detected in Judaism and condemned constitutes the essence of scientific socialism. "To make nature a serving-maid" — that precisely is the programme of socialism! The struggle of reason with the elements — that is, planned labour — is the essence of history according to Marx. Humanity at last becomes conscious of the saving significance of labour and will conduct consciously and in organised fashion that struggle which it conducted half-elementally, in disorder, at war with itself.[E86]

We shall see further that Marx in a certain sense proved the continuer of the prophets' work also as the proclaimer of the thirst for justice. 33

But Marx was far from being a pure Jew, nor could he have been one. The labour conception of life does not permit a contemptuous attitude to nature. Natural science ceases to be reverent admiration, but it loses not a hair's breadth of its theoretical depth and of the beauty of its conquests and bold constructions from the fact that it becomes conscious of itself as the daughter and vicar of labour, and gives the practical man primacy over the theoretical. Reverent natural science cannot free itself from mythological principles, from fantastic hypotheses; only practical natural science, understood as the need to orient oneself in phenomena in order to dominate them (as Ernst Mach teaches), arrives at a true realism, eliminating from science all subjective admixtures, arriving at a world-view founded on pure experience (Avenarius).

In the labour process, unlike magic, nature plays an enormous role. Not only must one understand it in order to be able to struggle with it and conquer it; one must also come to love it. For to love nature means being able to extract from it the maximum of enjoyments — not only the necessary though lower ones of a purely physiological kind, but also those of a purely aesthetic order. Man the master wants the earth not only economically well-ordered but beautiful. The acknowledgement of it as man's sole arena, and of the life of this our body as the only life, entails love for the earth and the body — a tender love, full of the thirst to adorn and develop. If theory in the socialist acquires a more practical character than in the idolater (that is, in the cosmic contemplator, the pantheist), the same must be said of his aesthetics: it is not the self-sacrificing love of a sigher, but the hot love of a lover, a husband. "Man is born to contemplate the world," says Cicero in his work De Natura.

Is that not the pitiful note of a slave sitting at the threshold of his mistress's dressing-room, present at her toilet, her play, her exultation in her own beauty, and in slavish admiration not daring even to think of real love or of an attempt to win reciprocity. But Marx teaches: "not to interpret the world, but to remake it."[E87] That is the language of a man. Treacherous, soulless, mighty, brilliantly beautiful, intoxicatingly rich nature, you will yourself be an obedient slave; in you man will find his bottomless happiness, and the very explosions of your revolt, and the depth of your fatal soullessness, your treachery as an unreasoning being, lovely great goddess, the dangers of love alone with you, will ravish the masculine heart of man. It was in distance from the slave, from the humiliated brother-man, that unfortunate Nietzsche sought his pathos. This pathos will be drawn from the consciousness of the greatness of reason over what is immeasurably stronger but not rational, and therefore lies at its feet. Woman, as sister, mother and comrade, Nietzsche wanted to turn into a "dangerous plaything". No, woman will sit beside him on the throne of dominion, and the dangerous plaything, terrible and delightful, will be the universe, luxuriously spread out around the divine human pair.

But the most important synthesis, which it was necessary to accomplish, grew out of the yawning contradiction between the Jewish affirmation of the freedom of the spirit and its royal rights, and the Hellenic affirmation of the limitedness of the spirit and the dependence of consciousness on being. Here beats the heart of scientific socialism. "It is not consciousness that determines being, but being that determines consciousness." — Previous philosophical systems strove to interpret the world; the new ones set as their goal to remake it.[E88] Whoever has found how these two propositions are harmoniously united in scientific socialism has penetrated to the essence of Marx's philosophy of history, of Marx's religion in my terminology. But this question is so vast, and so important in the purely practical respect (as in many ways conditioning instinct), that it demands separate treatment. The opposites — individual and society, progress and justice, freedom and determinism — were reconciled by the mighty thought of Marx.

But occupied with seething publicistic activity and with the great task of a deep and subtle analysis of the dominant phenomena and tendencies of the epoch we are living through, Marx only cast a ray of light over the whole region of religious philosophy; he concentrated wholly on the titanic work of the genius's vivisection of capital. This work gives scientific socialism a basalt foundation. The plan of the building itself was sketched by the hand of the great teacher. The pupils must industriously and thoughtfully work over all the parts of the harmonious whole which is still being built. And let true love for Marx, enthusiastic wonder before his genius, not hinder his cause from growing. The last great religion, given by a titan-Jew to the proletariat and to humanity, cannot congeal into a dogma.
