Chapter V. An Outline of the Development of Jewish Religiosity

The Jewish people was by general admission the most religiously gifted of peoples. For us this means: the people of the highest solidity of the instinct of life. The heavy conditions in which Israel was placed compelled it, for the sake of preserving its existence and self-consciousness, to embark upon peculiar and grandiose speculations, to separate its life from itself, to send it up to the heavens and magnify it there in proportion to its own humiliation, each time taking upon itself the guilt for its sufferings and clearing its god of it — that god being the law of coming, better days.

Since Jewish political and externally cultural life was crushed by the neighbourhood of the great conquering powers, the intellectual and moral leadership passed to the revolutionary or semi-revolutionary leaders of the petty-propertied common people that struggled against culture. The sin that ruined Israel was indisputably acknowledged to be the attempts of the aristocracy to go along the path of secular culture, inseparably bound up for that time with the predatory accumulation of wealth and exploitation. If God ever forgives his people, it will be only perhaps for the merits of the poor man, his long-suffering and faithful slave.

Jewry not only created out of its life-instinct a deity unheard-of until then in its might; it not only turned it into a God who punishes sins but intends one day to forgive and console poor, guilty humanity — it further gave him the features of a partisan of democracy, of the poor. All this made of Jehovah the ideal god of the suffering "common herd" of the whole world. And he became that after the Christian paganisation, the Christian accommodation of Judaism to the concepts and feelings of the Helleno-Roman world. And the common herd proved strong enough to impose its religion on the masters. The masters, alas, proved strong enough, having colluded with the priesthood of the new religion, to twist out of it a new rope for the poor man. Wolthat wird Plage[E95]. All this history presents a profound historical and religious interest. The enthusiastic praises of some and the abuse of others directed at the creation of the great Jordan prophets already prove its cultural importance.

Volthat vird Рlage.

Characterising Judaism, Darmesteter says: "They (the prophets) proclaimed right to be a force; they made the idea a fact before which all other facts retreat. They found pity for all the dispossessed, vengeance against all oppressors, peace for all peoples. By the force of their faith in justice they gave birth to its movement in the history of humanity."

And elsewhere still more enthusiastically: "They (the prophets) taught men to live without appealing to paradisal hopes. They taught that without an ideal the future hangs before a people like a rag, and that this ideal is not conquest, not might, but height of soul and the example of the best morals and laws. Amid the storms and tempests of the present they drew upon the sky the rainbow of a gigantic hope, the radiant vision of a better humanity, free from evil and from premature death, knowing neither wars nor oppression: then divine knowledge will fill the earth as waters fill the basin of the ocean.[E96] A dream that has now become the dream of many scholars."

On the other side Nietzsche thunders against the Jews: "In order to be able to say 'no' to everything that on earth represents ascending movement of life, success, might, beauty, self-affirmation, the instinct of ressentiment become genius had to invent for itself another world, from which this affirmation of life would appear to us as evil, as worthless in itself. By psychological reckoning the Jewish people is the people of the most tenacious life-force, which, having been placed in impossible conditions, voluntarily, out of the deepest prudence of self-preservation, takes the side of all the instincts of decadence — not as subject to them, but because it divined in them a might by whose help it could hold its own against the 'world'."

Both characterisations are partly right and partly not. The Jewish prophets did indeed put forward the ideal of justice with incomparable force. But the ideal of justice was in fact never "a fact before which all other facts retreat", nor a force in general: it was merely the banner, the ideology, of a definite force — namely of the oppressed, or of the classes that felt themselves oppressed. And moreover precisely of the small property-owners, since the prophets expressed mainly their interests; they never reached communism, to which the propertyless naturally incline. The prophets supplied slogans and belief in God's support to petty-bourgeois revolutionaries. Justice was a force in so far as the small property-owners themselves became a force. It of course helped them, as every ready-made, elegantly and beautifully elaborated, and moreover centuries-hallowed ideology helps.

The ideology of the prophets consisted in the assertion that there exists a God-Justice, who is also God-Omnipotence, who unconditionally grants men complete earthly happiness if they will live according to truth — that is, on the principles of economic and political equality. But Nietzsche is right too in noting the antiprogressive character of prophecy. Progressive from the democratic standpoint, it was reactionary from the economic standpoint, and consequently from the cultural one too. But such is the position of the small property-owner, and for a Marxist there is nothing surprising or unexpected in this fact.[E97]
