The biblical spirit in history has come forward more on the side of the thirst for justice hidden within it than on the side of the thirst for might. God is justice, he is the opponent of the predatory rich, the partisan of the poor proprietors, the friend of equality. Therefore he grants victory to the well-behaved, moderate and industrious representatives of the lower strata of society over the depraved, magnificent, proud upper strata that have forgotten God. This conception repeatedly made Sabaoth the leader of the revolutionary peasantry. Through the whole Middle Ages there stretch individual attempts at protest against the arrogance of exploiters, both ecclesiastical and secular. In the seething and many-shaped movement of the Reformation we see numerous sects resting on biblical traditions and going further than the servant of princes, Luther.
Thomas Münzer is a true descendant of Elijah, an undoubted and genuine prophet. Of course the propertyless do not find in the Bible the support that the small property-owners find. They turn with great love to the communism of early Christianity[E153]. So it was too during the great Puritan movement. But the main mass of the revolutionary forces of England drew its inspiration wholly from the prophetic ideology. Jehovah rose against the rich and the noble and smote them. Yet no less sharply did he deal with the communist Levellers.[E154] Jehovah is the god of the justice of the small property-owner.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau too was a prophet in the spirit of the Bible. The thirst for justice is the centre of his social-philosophical thinking. He thunders against culture in the manner of Elijah; he establishes popular sovereignty, in which Salvador, a Jewish philosopher of the nineteenth century, rightly finds echoes of the Jewish "ideal" democratic constitution as it was expressed in the institutions of Moses. (The popular assembly, voluntarily accepting or rejecting even the proposals of God himself, which after acceptance become a categorically binding law.)[E155] Not culture but morality; not the progress of the sciences and arts but equality; not the usurer's property, growing like a snowball, but the labour property of a peasant drawn in pastoral outlines.
The Great Revolution was far from being only the revolution of the industrial and commercial bourgeoisie, stretching its grown limbs, numbed on the Procrustean bed of the old regime; it was a petty-bourgeois revolution, and above all a peasant one. The Jacobins, though they loved after the manner of the Girondins to show off in the togas of Roman tribunes, could not cover their prophetic garments with their purple. Robespierre could not forget Jehovah. Even the merciless spirit of the Terror bore in itself the features of biblical fanaticism: destroy, destroy the sinners, says the Lord, that my people may be saved.[E156]
Jehus and Jonadabs, Rechabites, harsh fire-flaming Elishas, [E157]came alive again under clothing à la française. The already mentioned Salvador not without grounds sees in the principles of the Revolution the triumph of Jewish prophecy. "For long the prophets struggled with the Baals, with Zeus, with Christ — at last they see the approach of their ideal. To great Paris unhappy Jerusalem stretches out its hand."
Incidentally, it was still far to the realisation of the ideals. As always and everywhere, the equalising use of land, the egalitarian parcelism which the zealots and the righteous were inclined to demand, did not take root. The peasantry itself would not go in for it — at least the prosperous part of it. The element of capital, which had never before had such alluring horizons as now, which had never felt so much living force in its muscles, stepped over the heads of the zealots, and Satan with his watchword — "enrich yourselves, rise, conquer" — again conquered the god of justice.
The old prophetic form ceased even altogether to express justice. The ideals of Deutero-Isaiah cannot satisfy the democracy of an industrial society, for they are the ideals of an agrarian democracy.
But in its essential mutual relation the matter seemed not to have changed. The socialism of the first decades of the nineteenth century gladly bound itself to the Gospel of Luke[E158], and consequently to the biblical spirit.
Socialism demanded justice at any cost. The apologists of capital answered with the word "progress". "A fine progress yours is," repeated both the pure supporters of the petty bourgeoisie like Sismondi, and the first socialists of the new type like Leroux and others. "Your progress brings ruin, exhaustion, degeneration." "And your justice will halt the forward course of the development of humanity's forces," answered the economists.
This was the last phase of the struggle of Satan with God. The principle of Satan, beginning with the story of the apple, continuing with Cain and his tribe, with Nimrod and his tower[E159], with Solomon, with Ahab, with the Hellenic aristocracy of the spirit, the Roman aristocracy of the judgment seat and the sword, the divine Augustus, Lorenzo the Magnificent and the Borgias, down to the millionaires and machine-builders of modern capital — the principle of Satan, we say, was: wealth, might, beauty, science. Listening to him, man rose by trampling the backs and heads of his brothers, flourished and strove higher, drinking in with his roots the juices of the exploited mass's hearts and brains.
The principle of God was: the bonfire lit by Savonarola; the condemnation of vanity; the cold virtue of Robespierre. God spoke through the lips of Elisha when he ordered Jezebel to be given to the dogs and the foul luxury of the unbelieving Phoenicians to be burned with fire.[E160] God spoke too through the lips of the judge Dumas when, in reply to an enumeration of Lavoisier's scientific services, he answered: "We have no need of scholars; we have need of good citizens." The weak took their stand under God's protection, putting forward the super-earthly principle of justice against the "earthly" principle of aristocratic progress. In fact the "super-earthly principle" meant the equality of men in poverty, the inertness of mind and feeling, the kingdom of pitiful, self-satisfied petty bourgeois who had renounced the power of cognition, beauty and creation for the sake of animal well-being, for the sake of a paradise with its tree of life and its prohibition on thinking[E161]. How should Adonai 38 not have striven towards this? A slavish spirit, a thirst for repose, the belittlement of man, the acknowledgement of his being for ages dependent on God — that is, on nature — lay hidden in the revolutionary in form, democratic, popular programmes of the men of justice.
The consciousness of the height of human nature, the eternal striving towards might, knowledge and beauty, was proper to the best epochs of the aristocratic order. The master was more of a man. When the very hearers of the god of the poor became proud and glittering masters in purple and gold, the thought of the poor classes arrived at strange heresies which suspected the victory of Satan in the world and his imposture. The God who created this world ungracious to the poor, in which there is no justice, is not the real God at all; he is the Demiurge, who is also the Devil, who rebelled against God and became the prince of this world[E162]. And God? Why does he endure all this? Why does he not come to the rescue? Perhaps he is himself in captivity, conquered by evil? Is not the one of whom they said that he is Satan, he who languishes in hell — the Great One, the Slandered? Is not this the temporarily rejected god of justice?
Firm was the faith in divinity, in justice, and in the accursed vileness of the "pride" of the rich, the wise and the noble.
Justice acquired a reactionary character, progress an exploitative one.
In the controversies of the Sismondists and the Ricardians the same old dispute poured itself into new forms. "Progress of wealth, even at the price of the poor man's suffering," said the Ricardians coldly. "Justice, even at the price of universal poverty," answered the Sismondists.[E163]
Into this dispute intervened the greatest of the prophets — Karl Marx. He took the side of Satan. He rejected justice, acknowledging in it neither an ideal when it is deprived of wealth, nor a realisable programme. He acknowledged the growth of the economic forces of humanity as the most important thing, the all-justifying thing, the only path. But he proved that this path would lead precisely to the triumph of justice, to the triumph of the human spirit in both its postulates: the thirst for might and the thirst for justice.[E164] The proletariat did not reject progress after the example of former democracies; it set a high value on technology, on science and on true art. Now, on the contrary, the ruling classes try to proclaim the bankruptcy of science and are noticeably sinking into superstition and mysticism. Their progress is already turning against them; of the force of the strong, of the joy of life, of the greatness of science the proletariat speaks; of right, of heavenly reward, of the vanity of earthly things the bourgeoisie begins to mutter — and no longer only as before, for the sake of deception, but ever more sincerely, seeing the approach of death, seeing how the taut golden reins of the elements of progress are torn from its hands. Satan is placing himself at the head of the democratic columns. The new poets — Byron, Shelley, Carducci — already testify to this. Will not the last refuge of the aristocracy of money before the storm of revolution be the idea of right, of justice, the proclamation of divine providence as distinct from the vain thirst for pleasures? Will not Adonai settle definitively in the camp of the social summits? They have done so much for that! Are they not long since democrats, are they not Christians, are they not benefactors, are they not moralists? The collapse of the psychology of the masters! The best that was in that psychology the proletarian has inherited: faith in himself and in life, the thirst for progress, the consciousness of the dignity of human nature, the bold glance into the sky that discloses the phantom nature of its mythological population.
Adonai and Satan, with all their infinitely changing masks, begin at last to merge, and prove to be two cripples — or rather two wings of the unshod genius of humanity[E165]: now he receives both wings — the genius of humanity stretches them from edge to edge of the sky — the wing of the thirst for justice and the wing of the thirst for might.
Wealth is recognised as a means to the eternal progress of the species. The thirst for wealth, even in its low forms, is recognised as an elemental engine of progress in the twilight of human unconsciousness. Justice is recognised as the highest form of the organisation of labour — unhappily attainable only after a painful process of humanity's preliminary, half-conscious development of its economic forces.
Progress and justice are reconciled. The last prophet who came out of the womb of Israel, for all his enmity towards the acquisitive, historically justified them, for he valued that Babylonian tower of culture[E166] from which his distant predecessors turned away in indignation. The building was painful. On its stones is imprinted the blood of some — the baseness and brutality of others. The building is difficult even now. But outside this building there is no other path. The road to equality and brotherhood goes through exploitation and enmity; the road to freedom through slavery. Let us accept this courageously, without ridiculous, superfluous jeremiads. For this road was not laid out by any rational and just engineer. It is the road of a weak animal's struggle against a soulless element. Man walked as he could, stumbled, fell, tore himself on sharp stones, tumbled again from above into the abyss, and again began his labour of Sisyphus. And there are still cliffs, gorges and torrents before him. But the bright summit of the mountain is already visible. What zigzags the path took, how many superfluous torments! But it was dark within and without; he walked by groping, at first not even conscious of the goal, then conscious of it dimly. It is on the whole a terrible tale. Though with a good ending. If its author had been God — we should have forgiven him for it, for the sake of its ending. But… it has no author. Only blind necessity, which there is no point in cursing, and the instinct of life, which secured its good ending. The new philosophy of history is closely bound up with its first religious form.
