Is mythology, that marvellous interweaving of graceful tales, a religion? The freedom with which the poets formulated the myths, and the strange, now piquant, now comic, and sometimes scandalous character of certain myths — speak against mythology's being able to be an object of religious reverence. Yet a religious character is proper to it, only in an extraordinarily peculiar form. How did there arise the basic fund of myths common to all Aryans, which the Greeks so enriched?
Features of a deep interest in the phenomena of nature were undoubtedly proper to the Aryan. Sky, earth, water, sun, clouds interested him extremely. He, lively and impressionable, loved to convey what he saw on earth and in the sky. His language mastered the content and helped the narrator in such a way that in place of retelling there appeared creation. The Aryan's language is built entirely on analogy with the labour actions of man; every sentence has an acting subject and an action.[E167] One cannot express that the sun has as its property the radiation of light: the language says — "the sun shines". In the imagination there is immediately drawn a sun which acts, works, wants to shine. And so everywhere. All the phenomena of nature turn out to be actions and interactions of beings. But language has yet another peculiarity. Having developed out of the phenomena of human society, it created nouns possessing gender. The feminine and masculine gender, often purely accidentally, grammatically attached to this or that cosmic being, endowed it with an important human property — sex. This peculiarity of language furthered in the highest degree the development of cosmic animism. The gods very early acquired the character of man-like beings possessing sex, performing a series of actions against one another, standing in the most various relations to one another. The whims of language were transferred in the form of real representations to cosmic objects. At the root lay certain observations; the rest was poetic creation, inspired, so to speak, by the creative force of speech. And for a long time in Hellas such creation continued, often resting moreover on simple assonances. The unification of regions, the drawing together of kindred deities bearing different names, the heaping up of contradictory legends of different tribes and the attempts to reconcile them — all this gave food to fantasy and turned the cosmic animism of the ancestors into an infinitely ramified novel, into a dense forest of images.
But amid all this poetic disorder one process advances unswervingly: the constant individualisation of the gods. Among the Indians the gods still merge and part easily, and a single deity turns out to be trine or sevenfold and so on in persons. Among the Romans too, for a very long time, their deities, though they had will and could act, nonetheless merged with the very phenomena of nature in their reality. The Greeks went further than all others in their anthropomorphisation of the cosmos. Speech and myths ascribed to the gods so much that was human and did not cohere with the sun, the sea, the mountain as such, that the real object and its verbal, poetic reflection tore apart. Where among the Semites there developed the representation of an indefinitely spiritual principle living in the phenomena of nature and at the head of the elements — Elohim — among the Greeks there developed the representation of an immortal and mighty man-like king in charge of each given kind of phenomena.
Cosmic animism turned into anthropomorphic polytheism. When two deities of the same order collided in the imagination and one of them conquered, the other with all the retinue of its myths took a subordinate position, or turned into a great man, a hero, and the myths accordingly received a more realistic imprint. Renan observes on this point: "Greek mythology from one end to the other is the fruit of a continuous misunderstanding, thanks to which the gods, arising out of ancient man's admiration before the face of nature, turned into concrete individualities. And yet this continuous misunderstanding had an enormous religious significance. It led to the acknowledgement of the deep kinship of men and gods."
Thus from a single root come both the gods and mortal men.[E168] Or, as a later pagan theologian expressed it, "God is an immortal man, man a mortal god." (Corpus Hermeticum X.25)[E169] In this lies the colossal service of Greek mythology to Man. Instead of animals or monstrous forms, the gods acquire the pure form of man. "To the ancient question of the Sphinx — what is a deity? — the Greek Oedipus answered: man." So says Hegel.[E170] And that is of course true, though unfortunately with great and important reservations.
The Greek deified, after all, not man but nature. But he deified it not for its might, terrible to him, as the barbarian did, but for its loveliness. The marvellous climate of Greece contributed to this, and the relative well-being attained by Greek culture and a certain degree of economic independence from nature.
Nature is beautiful. That is the Greek's first symbol of faith. Perhaps it is often unkind, even cruel, but it is beautiful. But what is the beauty of nature? Perhaps nowhere does its purely human essence stand out so clearly as in ancient mythology. For the Greek explained the beauty of nature by translating it into human language.
"Before the face of the sea, for example," says Renan, "its brilliant or dark colours, the indefinite mood of sadness, infinity, terror and living loveliness rising in the Greek's soul, opened before him a whole cycle of melancholy deities, capricious, elusive shape-shifters. Other impressions and other gods are proper to mountains, earth, fire, volcano, the atmosphere and its various phenomena." So nature awakens in man purely human emotions: does the sea grieve? grow angry? caress? No, of course not. But interpreting its movements by analogy with human gestures and sounds, man endows it with his own consciousness and his own emotions. It seems to him that he has penetrated into the soul of the sea, but in fact he has endowed the sea with the riches of his own soul. We new men stop at this. Speaking of a solemn and sad sunset, we give ourselves wholly up to it.
We forget, just as the Greek did not know, that a sunset neither grieves nor triumphs, that this phenomenon is in its essence very far from the appearance we observe — simply the turning of the earth, our point of observation finding itself at a certain angle to the sun's rays; we forget, just as the Greek did not know, that all the poetry of a sunset is the unconscious creation of our nervous-cerebral system. But in exchange the Greek saw his own reflection in the phenomenon more clearly than we do. Out of the red conflagration a suffering face looked towards him — the face of a man burning himself, who had voluntarily and solemnly ascended the funeral pyre. With exultation the Greek would greet his resurrection, when in the joyful rays of the rising sun the same man would smile at him with the smile of regained youth and resurrected happiness. All the sensuous beauty of nature man creates by his sympathy. If nature lives, plays, suffers, that means that man is already rich, that he can already strew it with the diamonds of his soul.
The Greek felt so vividly these moods which he had put into nature that nature gave them back to him in the image of illumined human beings. So, deifying nature, the Greek humanised it; it was for its humanity that he deified it. And thereby he deified humanity itself. But how? Nature helped him to grasp the human in its ideal development. A man-like being whose anger expresses itself in a storm at sea or a tempest in the sky is of course infinitely mightier than the man of earth: what an enormous grandeur of strong life, but still human life, does Homer draw when he says: and in token thereof Zeus nodded with his dark brows; and the fragrant locks rose swiftly upward about the Cronian's immortal head, and he shook many-hilled Olympus. (Homer, Iliad 1.528–530)[E171] In exactly the same way the beauty of the deity hiding behind the dawn, behind spring, behind the love that pervades the world, and the wisdom hidden behind the uniform motion of the luminaries — must surpass the beauty and wisdom of earthly man. Nature, by the grandiose sweep which it gave through its manifestations to the humanity put into it, helped men to create the representation of humanity in its highest potency, to create the ideal of humanity and the great, joyful morality: "imitate God" — which for the Greek meant: develop.
But the beauty of nature has yet another side. For man to be able to perceive at all, and still more to perceive easily, a complex multiplicity — and nature is extremely complex in its multiplicity — there is needed the presence in that multiplicity of a unifying principle. Only order is experienced as beauty. The Greek deified the force of the elemental parts of nature, the brightness and purity of their manifestations, because he sympathetically felt the happiness of a full, elementally strong life. But he deified order in nature too, having called it a cosmos already in deep antiquity, having early likened it to musical consonance — harmony. Having succeeded in discerning order in nature (to a considerable extent again introduced by himself, in his thirst to grasp and aesthetically embrace his surroundings, for the Greek's cosmos was little like our scientific universe; it was an artistic simplification of the universe) — the Greek deified it for the possibility it disclosed of admiring that marvellous multiplicity. He deified it also because the representation of order awakened in him the representation of a stately repose, of the passionless, painless existence of the gods. Disorder — that is evidently struggle, torments, convulsions, imperfection. Order — repose, blessedness, perfection. The more the idea of the cosmos grew, the further receded the passionate gods of Homer, beautiful in their strength, and the more the features of their repose were deified.
The Olympians became passionless, mightily rational, strong — but having already solved all their problems, frozen in a solved perfection. The storms of the world, the sufferings of organisms remained at the foot of Olympus. They are the result of the imperfection of matter, a principle of course alien to divinity, a principle of disorder not yet entirely slain, though shackled by the forces of order.
Imitate God[E172] — came to mean: raise yourself above the passions, value order above all, subject to its eternal laws the by no means divine movements of your infirm, all too human heart. The religion of harmony, the aristocratic religion of conservative plannedness and of a beautiful voluntarily accepted hierarchy — triumphed with Apollo, a god from elsewhere, but transformed and beloved by the aristocratically conservative Dorians.
Thus from the romantic cosmism of storm and onslaught, of the infinitely passionate and valorous humanised elements — gods — Hellas passed to the classical cosmism of gods — laws of order, gods the guardians of the world. The free development of the rebellious man was compressed into the beautiful, cold, marble chains of a stable ideal. But it was not enough that man was declared dependent, and that in moderation — that is, in submission — his highest good was found (Plato in the dialogue Philebus says that the first condition of the highest happiness consists in the observance of measure, the second in a beautiful proportion making a man self-sufficient)[E173]. The Greek did not conceive even deified humanity as free: the gods depend on some faceless fate, which is sometimes identified with chance. Plato, with one side of his genius already stepping beyond the framework of the genuinely ancient world-view, with the other side adjoined it closely, and his mythical illustrations to the dialogues are often characteristic. In the famous myth of the souls striving to gaze upon the ideas in their eternal and pure beauty, in the dialogue Phaedrus, he declares that the original movement of souls proceeds from perfection to imperfection. But why? Why do the good, rational and mighty Ideas not change this sad order, not prevent the fall? They cannot! It is a law of nature, a fatality (θεσμός νόμος 'Αδραστειας), it is at last all-powerful chance (σὺν τυχα τινί).[E174] So even in Plato, whose deities have attained the highest spirituality, they stand infinitely far from the almighty Yahu, the God — will that knows no limits for itself. But if such a God enslaves, he is also the pledge of the unbridled love of freedom of his creators, the pledge of a boundless will to might. Whereas the Greek instinct to limit even the gods by a sovereign fate and to enmesh them in law — was the expression of a contemplative, acquiescent spirit.
This is felt too in another line of thought which might have led to a pure religion of humanity, but froze at its threshold.
