The Myth of the Superman

Translated by S. Alexander Laurent

Many peoples who reverently worshipped the elements or their creator were at the same time characterised by wonder before humanity itself. In its mature age humanity would express this wonder even through the lips of that very Sophocles who was the prophet of peace, as the pledge of the peace of the gods: There are many mighty powers in the world, But stronger than man There is nothing on earth. (Sophocles, Antigone 332–333)[E175]

The consciousness of the greatness of man's role in the world was one of the stimuli for the creation of the myth according to which man would one day render the gods the help they needed in their struggle with the forces of darkness.

It is curious how differently this luminous myth was reflected in the psyche of different peoples. In the greatest purity we see it among the Persians. Here the gods divide sharply into good and evil, and the man Saoshyant, resting on the help of the good deities, will save the world. Among the Indians man outgrows the gods still more sharply and definitely: to the saviour — Buddha Gautama — the gods bow down humbly. He conquers the devil. But how? Not by granting victory to life, but by annihilating life at the very root. That is a pessimism to which man said "yes", and which thus turned into a decadent optimism. Among the Germans we see in their interpretation of the myth a terrible and morbid pessimism. Cast upon the misty and cold north, the Scandinavians do not believe in the victory of the gods of light. Why then did man not help them to win it? A vague sense that he had gone along a false road, degenerated, lost his way, is expressed in the myth of Siegfried's betrayal of his true goal — beauty, wisdom, victory — Brunhild. The saviour of the world died; he saved no one. Darkness prevails. Among the Greeks we find only broken parts and memories of the myth, but these are extremely interesting.

It is asserted that the gods have already done battle with the darkness (the Titans) and conquered, thanks to the help of man — Prometheus. But there they stop. Vaguely sensing that the injustices of fate continue to reign over the world, they turn Zeus himself into a tyrant, proclaim Prometheus's revolt against him, and out of the saviour of the gods make him their enemy. And again they promise a man-saviour, now a different one, who will come and conquer the gods, saving not them but the human race from them. Then again, frightened by their own boldness, they invent a way out. The conqueror of the gods would be the son of Zeus and Thetis. Zeus learns in time of the danger threatening him and gives Thetis in marriage to a mortal: a degenerate offspring is born — Achilles. Of course he is stronger and more beautiful than all men, but how should he, short-lived, encroach upon the throne of the gods? Prometheus goes to make his submission. Achilles, after a brief brilliant period, descends into Hades and grieves there amid the murk of the kingdom of death. A complete renunciation of the struggle against the gods. And the banner of revolt had already been raised.

The same with Heracles, who has many points of contact with the original Aryan saviour — man: though he liberates Prometheus, though he triumphs over the elements and over death itself, he penetrates Olympus only in the capacity of a kind of serving-man. Only vague rumours wander about that he will one day inherit the Cronian's throne. By the majority these rumours are rejected with indignation. Thus the reconciliation of man voluntarily bowing before the law triumphs. This is the religion of the aristocracy, of a consolidated, legalised society. The democracy was evidently unable to set against it an active, living religion.

Yet within the limits we have indicated the Greeks developed the highest type of man (the classical), harmonious and beautiful, though all too reconciled and "self-sufficient". In the history of Greek religiosity down to the apogee of the aristocratic tendency's ideal — Apollo and Diana — we see the history of man's growth.

Apollo was originally a god from elsewhere, but his original features — god-warrior, god-seer, god-light — gave food to purely Greek creation. In the sixth century the Delphic Greek corporation — the bearer of Apollo — in alliance with Sparta, which found in him its ideal, triumphs in the religious world. The gods finally lose their elemental character, become ideal gods, gods of a ripened Greekness. 39

"What is Apollo if not the incarnation of the Dorian genius?" says Renan. "In his cult there is nothing mystical, nothing orgiastic, not a drop of that wild enthusiasm which distinguished the Phrygian cults (Dionysus). The enemy of the agricultural and artisan gods of the Pelasgians (or perhaps simply of the democratic ones? A. L.), this ideal Dorian type considers his sole task: vengeance, protection, punishment — those are his labours; others are beneath his dignity. What is his sister, Artemis, beside him, if not the feminine incarnation of the same genius? She is a Dorian girl who has become equal to man thanks to a masculine upbringing, pure, proud, mistress over herself, desiring no other protector or master." "Physical phenomena," Renan continues, "remain only the canvas: humanity has definitively gained the upper hand."

For the aristocrat it was of course comparatively far easier to arrive at the religion of the self-sufficient harmonious man. In the flowering epoch he was conscious of himself as the rightful leader of his state; in the life of the state he found a force diverting him more or less from thoughts of death. But these thoughts were bound to kill in his soul everything strong, in proportion as his hopes for a social cosmos collapsed. The questions of the immortality of the personal soul were then bound to come to the fore.

If the slaves did not yet speak their own religious language, then most probably it was the middle class — the farmers, the free citizens of "democratic states" like Athens — that inclined away from Apollo towards another religious system borrowed from the barbarians. "The Olympian gods," says Renan, 40 "were good only for the aristocrat. Not a wrinkle on their brows, not a ray of sadness; human nature considered schematically from its noble side; grief is not taken into account. But those who suffer want their god too to suffer with them."

The appearance of the god of longing life, the god of the drunken dithyramb, the strange Bacchus-Dionysus, caused confusion in the Greek cultural world. But he drew hearts too strongly; they had to be reconciled. Incidentally, Rome at home broke the Bacchanalia by savage mass executions of "conspirators".

The religion of Dionysus was rich in "mysteries". Here was promised the fusion of mortal man, if only for a short while, in the ecstasy of the orgy with immortal nature, beating with mad forces. Here men began to speak of purifying suffering, of another life. In the mystery of the sprouting vine they saw the pledge of immortality. The strong old wineskins of Olympian culture barely withstood the pressure of the fermenting young "spiritual wine".[E176] Despair mingled with vague joy; death struggled with life. These principles in their further development ruined Olympus — ruining also their original bearers: Apollo and Dionysus were alike declared devils.
