The Rupture of Harmony

Translated by S. Alexander Laurent

In the most ancient period the Greeks, who loved life so much, related to death with a natural fear which did not, however, in the least paralyse their military courage. Homer has preserved numerous testimonies of the primitive hell of the Greeks. It greatly resembles the Sheol of the Hebrews — a disconsolate, tedious place where there is no life, but only a vague, nightmarish vegetative existence of souls. Achilles asserts that it is better to be a shepherd under the sun than a king in Hades.[E177] The souls themselves are something very pitiful: they are crowds of ghouls, to whom a little food must be given so that they do not harm men. With such pitiful colours Homer describes them:

Hermes the while, the Cyllenian god, the souls of the slain Summoned forth from the senseless bodies; and holding in his hands his Golden wand — which at his will brings upon the wakeful Sleep, and opens the eyes that sleep has closed: With it he waved, and gathering together the shades flew after Hermes With a squeak, like bats in the depths of a deep cave, Clinging in a chain to the walls — if one, breaking loose, Falls to the ground from the cliff, they squeak, fluttering in disorder,

So squeaking flew the shades after Hermes, and he led them Hermes, in woes the protector, to the limits of mist and corruption. (Homer, Odyssey 24.1–10)[E178]

But now a ray of light begins to penetrate the dark kingdom. Above all it was in this direction that the thought of priests and legislators worked: to make the secrets of the life beyond the grave a source of the force of laws and morality, to extend the power of the gods, guardians of the foundations of state, society and family, to existence beyond the grave — such was their aim. The theory of retribution began to develop. Plato, who repeatedly dwells on this belief, everywhere calls it "an ancient myth". The second force that impelled, so to speak, towards a reform of the afterlife was the thirst for immortality, developed above all among people and classes deprived in this life: this thirst for immortality developed the more strongly, and the more captivated the hearts of the aristocracy itself, the more the foundations of society were shaken, the less satisfaction could be found in the life of the political whole. The third force was the strengthening representation of the soul as the mistress and disposer of the body, of a purely spiritual, rational, lofty and harmonious principle — and of a lower, inert, and finally even primordially vicious body. This representation was elaborated with love by the aristocracy, since it was in itself aristocratic. Plato likens the higher soul, the true soul in man, to the philosophers and rulers of the state; and the vicious body of the state, inclined to revolt, incapable of initiative but alas capable of base resistance — that is the demos.

All these forces contributed to the fact that the cult of the chthonic deities — that is, the gods of the earth — originally pushed aside by the Olympians, afterwards revived with enormous force. Dea Mater — the fertility of the earth; Persephone, Hades, Hermes, gods of the earth's depths; and Kore, Triptolemus, Dionysus — gods of the sprouting of plants — had long since and naturally bound together with an indissoluble bond the agricultural religion and the religion of death.

The earth grants life; to the earth the dust returns. The earth is our mother and our grave. But the seed thrown into the earth, buried, rises again under the sun for a new, intensified life.[E179]

That is why Demeter, who revealed to men the benefits of agricultural culture, the gentle goddess to whom man owes his whole civilisation, the true mother of all that is good, our nurse — opened our eyes at the same time to a great mystery: namely, that death is only a temporary state, a passage into another life. And it is evident that this other life will be good or bad according as we have honoured in life the covenants of the gods. Here are the rudiments of a very serious cultural religion. Apollo himself (that is, Delphi) did not venture to reject it. Its height was acknowledged by the best minds. Sophocles exclaims: "Thrice blessed is he who descends to Hades having seen the sacred rite. He alone lives in that darkness; for the rest only torments are appointed." (Sophocles, fr. 837; Plutarch, Moralia 21f)[E180]

Evidently by the "sacred rite" are meant the Eleusinian mysteries, to which the whole of Orphism strongly held — that is, the whole current that strove to transfer the centre of gravity of religion to hopes beyond the grave, using them at the same time to moralise earthly life. What then were these mysteries? They were the unfolding of the cult of Demeter in all its depth, by means of a peculiar symbolic spectacle in which a great crowd of the initiated took part.

Many investigators believe that we have here to do with a genuine mystery. The Greek union and the Orphics in general are compared with the Freemasons. It is said that the secret was kept with such reverence that only Christian writers dared to disclose it — distorting and profaning it, of course.

As it seems, the matter was not so mysterious nor so solemn. With certainty one can say only one thing: it was a very poetic cult, accompanied by alternations of frenzied grief and stormy joy, a direct contradiction of Apollo's equipoise; here man wept over the sorrows of life and consoled himself with hope; it was in the full sense of the word a tragic religion, reflecting real life with its uncertainty, with its impulses now of despair, now of proud joy. It seized the soul. But at the same time it introduced into life a mystical principle. The terrible vice of Orphism consisted in this, that it set out along the metaphysical path and not along the historical one; it taught individual salvation and not the victory of the species through labour: this idea, so proper to the Persians, which in a more distorted form became the centre of Judaism (not labour but virtue), was utterly alien to the Orphics.

The central myth of the Eleusinian mysteries is very rich: on one side it is a purely Greek individualisation and dramatisation of the phenomena of nature. Hades, the earth's depths, abducts the lovely "Kore of the broad hips" — that is, the fertile force. She would have dwelt there forever, in the dark and terrible depths of the earth. But Kore's mother, Demeter, another, more general personification of fertility, in terrible grief seeks her daughter. She learns that she is in Hades, and between the world below and the world above a compact is established: Kore will live part of the year in the depths, and the other part of the year will ascend to her mother, who sends light and moisture and warmth upon the fields and meadows; Kore will smile at her heavenly mother with the flowers and fruits of the earth. The heavenly and the earthly, height and depth, are bound together in the mystery of generation; plants strain towards the sky which sowed them — from the earth which raised them. During her wanderings Demeter found shelter and help with the king Triptolemus, in the little town of Eleusis: it was he whom she taught how man may further germination, and thereby laid the foundation of the highest form of culture.[E181]

The other side of the myth, artistically merging with the first, is more mystical: the souls of men too are the offspring of the heavens; death locks them up, abducted into the prison of the grave. But the sky calls them to itself; by the power of the sky they, heavenly-earthly, will be summoned to a new life, better according to their merits. Longing on earth, men send up to the sky, like flowers, the fragrance of their prayer; they too bind depth and height. In the eternal circulation of life, she, the soul of the universe, loses not a single soul — daughter, cares for all, calls all back to herself; death is only a passage, something apparent.

In all this there is as yet no denial of matter in the name of spirit. But later, when life satisfies both the lower and the upper strata of Greek society less and less, the longing for a wholly different order of life will grow stronger in both — though for different reasons. Orphaned, forgotten, given over to the power of elements alien to him, man will feel himself; and he will introduce a new meaning into his myth: the soul is a heavenly seed; hell is no longer death — no, it is life itself; the earth — that is hell; the body — that is the grave. A righteous life allows the soul to purify itself of the body; death will then be the deliverer; the body is a vile caterpillar, the coffin a chrysalis, the new free soul a lovely butterfly.

Pessimism had already struck too deep roots here: men began to renounce the joys of life in order to escape its sorrows, and they pictured the life beyond the grave the more radiantly the less bright the term of real life became. This was the beginning of the twilight of the gods of beautiful, equipoised life, the dawn of Christianity, hostile to life and destroying every equipoise. Longing conquered contentment. And that would have been well, had it not led man — having freed him from the closed circle of ancient Greek culture — along a wholly false road into infinity. It had not yet succeeded in entering upon the path of the progress of labour. It entered upon the path of the dream, then of dogma, and finally of a pitiful magism.

Renan, relying on German investigators, depicts the mysteries themselves rather vividly. It will not be superfluous to give this description here, since in it the above-mentioned connection of Orphism with Christianity is beautifully noted. "It was above all a long procession, interrupted by noisy scenes, purifications, vigils, fasts and explosions of joy, a nocturnal run with torches amid the darkness, terror and suddenly bright light. The profiles of a temple opened; the participants were at last led into a place of delight; voices were heard. Theatrical machines produced symbolic miracles; declamation, dance and music found their place here. They bowed before the statue of the Mater Dolorosa.

Renan continues. "It is indubitable that the Eleusinian mysteries had a considerable moral and religious influence; they consoled in the present life, promised a future life, and promised reward not only for piety and purity but also for justice." If consolation in this life, the promise of another, and the preaching of reward, as also the cult of the mother mourning the death of her child, were already included in the Eleusinian mysteries, then no less remarkable features do we find in the mystery of Adonis.

Renan speaks of this cult: Adonis is the sun, passing six months through the higher signs of the zodiac and six months through the lower; the boar that killed him is a symbol of winter; Adonis also, on the other hand, means vegetation and the periods of its withering and flowering. But what made women come running in crowds to the festival of Adonis? The desire to mourn the young god, too early snatched away by death, to see him on his deathbed, in flowers, with his beautiful head helplessly bowed, to touch him with their hands, to tear out their hair in token of grief, to groan — and then to rejoice at his resurrection.

Renan rightly stresses the sensuous side of the rite, but leaves aside its connection with its mystical content: at Adonis's bier man mourns his own mortality and rejoices in the illusion of his own immortality.

"Profound researches," Renan continues, "show that everything in Christianity that is not evangelical is taken from the mysteries of paganism."40a But here too Renan stops half-way. No, much that is evangelical and Pauline is taken from the mysteries: can it really be that the early death of Adonis, his descent into hell and his resurrection have simply no relation whatever to the Gospel? At Christmas and at Easter, by an ancient tradition, pious Christian women are present at the celebration of the birth, death and resurrection of Adonis, themselves not knowing how close they are to their ancient sisters. To this must be added that Adonis's own brother — the sun-god Mithras — not only rises and dies but is the redeemer of humanity. The analogies between Christianity and the Mithraic mysteries were so striking that the Fathers of the Church could explain them only by a cunning anticipation of the Christian cult on the part of the devil.[E182] Let us note one more purely Orphic myth, which will at one and the same time show us one of the summits of Orphism and a new remarkable coincidence with Christianity. We are speaking of the myth of Zagreus.

The Orphics struggled very energetically against bloody sacrifices. Evidently they had to wage no small struggle also against human sacrifices. The myth of Zagreus is, first, a ritual myth, symbolically fixing in men's minds the decline of human sacrifice. But men did not renounce bloody sacrifices without difficulty: by bringing them they became table-companions of the gods, partook of their life, their greatness. Cannibalism had much that was mystical in it: not to speak of the fact that it was the most ordinary food for the gods, especially if what was sacrificed to them was the dearest and tenderest — for instance, one's first-born — a man who has eaten the heart, the brain and other organs of another man acquires, according to ancient belief, the valour of the devoured. Hence the cannibal desire to eat, together with one's gods, someone valiant and beautiful from the camp of the enemies. Hence the boast: my god ate your god, as I, the son of my god, ate you, the son of your god. But if my gods ate another god, they have assimilated his greatness. As a table-companion of the gods, man gives them his food, they give him theirs — and man, if fortunate, can become, like his deities, a God-eater. This was a great happiness for him. He would partake of the might of the god he had eaten. Thus too the Korybantes — those half-gods, half-men, half-monsters — seized the young and lovely son and favourite of the god (Zeus), Zagreus, and devoured him. But Athena, goddess of wisdom, morality and the new culture, was horrified on seeing the feast of the Korybantes from the height of many-hilled Olympus; she turned Zeus's gaze in that direction. Zeus in an instant punished the Korybantes with a blow of consuming lightning. Of dear Zagreus there remained only a heart.[E183] But Zeus took that still-throbbing heart, warmed it on his bosom, and out of it there grew a new, beautiful and young god — the heart of the universe — Dionysus. Out of the corpses of the Korybantes there arose our material world. For, as the philosophical interpretation of this ritual myth holds — a myth that originally had only a meaning akin to that of the myth of the sacrifice of Isaac[E184] — the Korybantes are the dark elements that swallowed up the luminous and beautiful emanation of the deity — Zagreus. We therefore derive our bodies from the accursed "God-eaters", the Korybantes. That is why we are accursed. But as "God-eaters" we contain within us particles of the body and blood of God — that is, sparks of the spirit.[E185] It is they who yearn sadly back towards their radiant heart, towards Dionysus. That is why in moments of oblivion of worldly desires, in moments of the highest despair, we love Dionysus so, we strain so towards him; and he, the god-sufferer, the god with the bloodied and flaming heart in his breast, the god who from the place of torment ascended to God the Father — he loves us too, for he too feels himself kin to us, to men. He smiles amiably upon our souls, intercedes for us when, under the influence of the criminal body, the soul grows dim and sins. He will one day gather all to himself — the god blood-kin to us — and the crime of our ancestors, their deicide, will prove to be the redemption of matter, its partaking of the spirit: perhaps it too will one day be illumined; perhaps it will not be pure spirit alone that ascends up there, to the heights, but Dionysus will grant a new being to the flesh itself, grown akin to the spirit, when through suffering it is exalted.

So too St Paul wavers between the direct cursing of the flesh and the dream of its transfiguration. It is terrible, and the soul must be torn out of its prison — and yet it is a pity to leave it altogether.[E186]

In general, the analogies hardly need underlining. Like every dying and rising god, Zagreus has of course a connection with the sun, burning on the evening pyre and swallowed by the waves of the sea, to shine forth again in the sky.

Recall the marvellous hymn of Hauptmann's Heinrich: "O sun, ancient forefather." Like a prodigal son, man must strive towards it.[E187] And so: Master Heinrich did not know how right the parallels he drew between the religion of the sun and the religion of the Risen One were.

But the interesting theme of Christ as the last solar deity cannot be developed here. I hope to devote a separate study to it.

Orphism is the rupture of harmony. It is very possible that it had a more or less democratic origin, as its offshoot — Christianity — proves. This was perhaps originally the religion of peasants, of poor farmers. But the aristocracy went to meet it and developed, resting on Orphism, a lofty and peculiar religious philosophy.
