When the matter concerns so complex a phenomenon as religion, a definition becomes a rather conventional thing. A definition that would embrace all sides of so diverse and changeable a stream of feelings, thoughts and deeds would itself be complex. We can demand of it only that it single out what is most essential and characteristic in religion. And here in essence there reigns almost arbitrariness. The purpose for which definitions are sought intervenes, and accordingly stresses now this, now that. The enlightener, fighting against the harmful forms of a religion that has become a reactionary force, readily makes it the essential mark of religions precisely that in them whose harmfulness or decrepitude can be easily proved. He often clutches at the external marks of religion, at its mythology and dogmas, declares these to be the soul of every religion, proves their contradiction with science and progress, and sentences "religion in general" to inevitable death.
A man with a strong sense of historical continuity, thinking and feeling less rationalistically, inclines rather to the thought that the essence of religion may and must outlive its forms. It seems strange and improbable to him that a whole region of the spirit should die out, that the whole order of feelings and thoughts which served as the axis of the psychic life of nations should collapse without trace. Behind the forms of religion he seeks the needs that gave birth to it, and asks himself — are those needs satisfied, or have men renounced them, condemned them, so that they have atrophied? And if not, how are they satisfied now? And that which satisfies them — has it not deep analogies with the old forms of religion, despite the fundamental difference — precisely on the side of form? Such an investigator will want to catch in his definition of religion those features of it which constitute the very depth of its spirit — precisely its relation to the fundamental needs, the fundamental demands of man.
Of course the question then arises: granted that the new system which satisfies the same demands is to that extent connected with religion — but can the old name be retained for it, when a fundamental formal difference is admitted? Pantheism is of course still a religion, but can one call a religion — well, at least the religion of humanity of which the positivist Comte dreamed?
I would say that here too everything comes down to where we put the emphasis — on the form, on how religion answered, or on what it answered.
But that is not all. Even among the supporters of what I would call the bio-psychological definition of religion (as distinct from the rationalist one) a fundamental disagreement is possible. For to the question "to what fundamental demands of the human spirit did religion answer?" various answers may be given. For some, closer to rationalism, these demands reduce to the striving to penetrate the "secrets of the world". They will therefore regard every metaphysics as a continuation, a new phase, of religion, and will proclaim metaphysics undying. Others, closer to economism, voluntarism and biologism, will see the essence of these demands in the problems of happiness, justice, perfection, might and immortality, and they will regard a new, deeply realistic and enthusiastic idealism as the new phase of religion.
All these disagreements will become clearer to us if we make even a cursory excursion into the Social-Democratic literature on this question, an excursion that makes no claim whatever to completeness of survey.
