The author's abiding interest in the religious and artistic expressions of man's inner life — an interest that had shown itself since childhood — could not fail to grow to the dimensions and significance of a real problem of life after his enthusiastic "conversion to Marxism". He never apprehended Marxism as a "dry" economic theory, as an objective factual investigation and nothing more. Of course the presence and importance of those elements in scientific socialism were clear to him; but scientific socialism was above all, for him, a synthetic philosophy which harmoniously united ideal and practice, and which realistically and revolutionarily crowned the grandiose, deeply soul-stirring impulse of thought of Marx's teachers — the great German idealists.
What Hegel, and later Feuerbach, were for Herzen and his friends, Marx was for our generation. His deep practicality, his objectivity, his iron logic, his almost always deliberately sober, almost dry language — all this did not hide from us the warmth and light of the heart of his system.
Another giant of thought, "the master of the Vladimir leather-goods factory", Joseph Dietzgen, answered Marx's "revelation" in a fervent letter: "You have for the first time expressed in clear, irrefutable scientific form that which will henceforth become the conscious tendency of historical development — namely the tendency to subject to human consciousness the natural force of the social process of production, which has hitherto been blind."[E1] It was precisely this side of the matter that struck and attracted us as well. And the dizzying horizons which the great prophets of humanity's productive forces, from Bacon of Verulam to Saint-Simon, opened before the imagination, made intelligible the "aesthetic and religious weight" of human labour. "The philosophers of the old schools knew the world; the task of the new philosophy is to change it."[E2] But at the same time it seemed to the present writer that no one had sufficiently stressed this aesthetic and religious value of the new world-view and of the workers' movement itself. It was understandable too why this had happened. Marx's and Engels's task was to illumine actuality from the angle of necessity — that is, of scientific cognition. The task of valuation was quite rightly held by them to be secondary, perhaps tertiary.
But the fullness of man's relation to the world is obtained only when its processes are not merely cognised but also valued. Man is a cognising and valuing being, and action flows only out of cognition and valuation. Let the task of defining the foundations and character of the new proletarian world-valuation, and of clarifying its place among the other world-valuations of past and present, be considerably less important than the task of grounding the scientific proletarian world-view — from this it still does not follow that it is unimportant.
There began to take shape in the author's mind something in the nature of a system of aesthetics, taken in the broadest sense — that is, as the science of human valuations in general. This thought must be dwelt upon in the present preface. Valuation is above all a psychological fact. All valuations whatsoever, from the crudest to the most all-embracing ideal, have at their basis the psychological fact of pleasure and aversion. The organism not only senses, but its sensations appear to it to be coloured in these two psychological hues, in the most varied degrees and nuances. The physiological basis of this psychological fact is fairly clear. Avenarius's physiological explanation of this colouring (the theory of the affectional) still seems to the author unshaken. The most primitive fact — the striving to prolong a pleasant sensation useful to the organism, and to interrupt a harmful one, as an act of the organism's self-preservation — that is the seed out of which the whole wealth of feelings, affects, emotions and strivings has unfolded; at first this unfolding has a predominantly biological (zoological) character, and afterwards an ever more social one.
Just as human cognition and human labour, so too man's valuations developed under the direct influence of the cosmic environment, and still more of the social environment; and the laws of that development can be discovered only by means of the same historical-materialist, or monistic, method.
That whole part of aesthetics which considers "valuation" as a biosociological fact, and finds its place among the other manifestations of the species-life and the individual life of man, may be called "biological aesthetics", including sociology within the concept of biology as its more complex manifestation. But aesthetics cannot confine itself to this. Let us recall that cognition itself can be the object of biosociological study — that is, science can seek the place of cognition itself and explain its significance among the other manifestations of individual and social life. The result of such a study of cognition (whose new foundations were laid in particular by Avenarius in his Critique of Pure Experience) is inevitably the conviction of the profound relativity of the fruits of cognition. The present state of science, the present world-view, ceases to appear as an exact reflection in "reason" or the "subject" of matter, the world, or the object, and becomes one of the stages in man's development through labour, in his slow striving — conditioned by the peculiarities of his organism — to get the external, the environment, into his head and to humanise it: the whole human world is a labour-product, the result of man's contact with the elements through social labour, in the broad sense of the term. Thus what we call "our world" is only the relative equilibrium of the "social brain" and external forces. This creates the possibility, indeed the necessity, of representing to oneself other, higher (as also lower) world-perceptions and world-views. Yet a profound awareness of the relativity of our world-view does not prevent us from starting out from the data of our science as from something unshakeable, from building theories about the past and future of the world, from building the history of our own cognition. And this is the only correct behaviour. One must not lose sight of the relativity of all principles, laws, even axioms. But so long as they do not in practice lead to contradictions and cannot be replaced by better ones, we must strive precisely by their light to illumine the world, and precisely with their help to widen the limits of what man has cognised.
The same is repeated with valuation. Biological aesthetics cannot but lead us to the conclusion of the relativity of all valuations whatsoever. And that which discloses itself to us alongside the new proletarian world-view, as the new proletarian world-valuation, is likewise of course a relative, transient and in any case purely human subjective form of feeling. But for us, within the limits of our epoch, we can start out from this valuation, not only as from something established but — what is far more joyful — as from something establishing itself for "tomorrow". And this is what makes possible the creation of a "normative aesthetics" — not, of course, an absolute one.
Our normative aesthetics, in establishing the criterion and the norms of valuation, does not suppose that it is discovering objective laws of value, but strives only to introduce order into existing judgments (into the concepts of good and evil, beauty and ugliness and the like), as these are created in our epoch of the change and struggle of two worlds: the bourgeois-individualist and the proletarian-socialist. Here it is necessary to mention only that fundamental criterion which, as it seems to the author, lies at the basis of aesthetics: the concept of the maximum of life, of the greatest possible vitality. The principle of unity in diversity, or of the fullest possible unity with the greatest possible wealth of elements, expresses at bottom the same thing, but, like every "harmonic" principle, it does not sufficiently stress the dynamic side of what is held to be positive. Moreover, the criterion of the maximum of life, when one penetrates to the biological and social essence of this ideal (for it is both a criterion and an ideal), is a highly social principle and coincides with the principle of the perfection of the species — a principle which Marx too openly proclaimed.[E3] Normative aesthetics arranges all the values of the world (of nature and of life) systematically around this ideal. Biological aesthetics not only clarifies the biological essence of this ideal but also serves it as a mighty support, disclosing precisely its development, its embryonic forms in other ideals and other criteria, and showing clearly that deviations from it and contradictions of it, if they are not stages of its own development, have a biologically and socio-economically morbid and regressive character. Biological aesthetics reveals that the ideal of the maximum of life, of the perfection of the species in man, of the might of the species, of the victory of reason over the elements (expressions of one and the same essence) is the psychic expression of what is in fact the mightiest progress of physiological and socio-economic life; it reveals also how and why the ideal is in its turn a force heightening the energy of individual and social development.
Here one must confine oneself to these most general strokes. So far the author has succeeded only in sketching a general outline of positive aesthetics, printed in the symposium Outlines of a Realistic World-View. That outline stands greatly in need of additions.
The reader will understand how timely these ideas must have appeared to the author when there began that advance, so energetic at first, of the ex-Marxists who had "turned idealist". They seemed to proceed from the same need. Mr Berdyaev formulated the task clearly: according to Marx, socialism is a sociological necessity — but does it follow from this that it is a good? According to Marx, socialism is the class cause of the proletariat — but does it follow from this that it is also the cause of all humanity, with the exception of the self-seeking? In a word, can one not prove that socialism is the highest social ideal conceivable at present, irrespective of the interests of this or that separate class and independently of the question of the inevitability of its coming. Many orthodox Marxists simply did not see the question and the task where Berdyaev saw them. They even asserted at times that the ideal can only be a class ideal, and that the task of proving its unconditional height, its objective advantages, is an empty task. Two propositions suffice: socialism is advantageous to the proletariat; socialism will come by the laws of the development and disintegration of capitalist society.
This was a narrow judgment. True, those who held it said: whom do you intend to catch with your objective proofs of the height of the socialist ideal? Socialism is not a faith thirsting for proselytes outside the proletariat, but a purely class task of the proletariat. They even added that allies from other classes are not merely unnecessary to it but harmful. I repeat — this was a narrow judgment. The natural preparation for the dictatorship of the proletariat is the ideological hegemony of the proletariat. One may perhaps deny the usefulness of admitting allies from the intelligentsia and the petty bourgeoisie into the Social-Democratic party; but the importance of broad sympathy for the proletariat and its banner among all forward-looking people and all the dispossessed can be denied only by a blind man. For it is already absolutely clear that the proletariat will not conquer and will not hold the dictatorship against everyone. That is why the ideological propaganda of socialism is an important thing. And the demonstration of the objective height of the socialist ideal — not only for the wage-worker but for every thinking and feeling person not spoiled by class egoism or prejudice — is a direct road to winning sympathies, often a far more correct road, leading to more durable results, than the parliamentary services rendered by Social Democracy to various non-proletarian groups in various particular cases.
Besides, the fighting capacity of the proletariat rises when it sees its cause as true in the light of science, and lofty in the light of the ideal.
But Mr Berdyaev set about solving the question in the most unfortunate manner.
He came down hard on the Russian school of the subjectivists, in order to fence himself off from it. For the subjectivists, the subjective human ideal — an ideal elaborated by rational, critical personalities — was itself an independent and mighty force, capable of standing up in single combat against any objective laws of history whatever. Historical fatum was reduced almost to nothing; the conscious will of active groups was raised to the rank of arbiter of destinies. A false doctrine, a superficial view. Mr Berdyaev criticised it, pointing to the insignificance of subjective ideals in the struggle with actuality. No, he does not want to build his concept of the good, to ground his values, on the shaky supports of personal and group likes and dislikes. Ideals created by men are only the desires of various groups; the battle is decided not by the beauty of banners but by the number and social weight of the fighters. But above the struggle of men and their group and class ideals shine the eternal stars of objective, binding values. These moral truths were not known and clear from the beginning, any more than the a priori laws of logic. But like the latter — they are not invented. They are discovered; like the latter, they are formally binding upon moral thinking, feeling and behaviour. It is entirely natural that Mr Berdyaev, having clutched in his first book at Kantian objectivity in order to climb out of the "swamp" of the humanly relative, should afterwards have rolled down the inclined plane like a stone down a mountain, bouncing over the potholes, and rolled as far as open mysticism, with a personal God as the magnificent, reliable guardian and source of objective truth — of moral truth first of all, of course.
The subjectivists were wrong to counterpose heroes to the crowd, ideas-forces to the elements. But to correct their mistake was not so difficult. However it may be, man is himself the maker of his history, said the subjectivists. And that is true.[E4] But man makes his history, first, in the struggle with nature; secondly, blindly and unconsciously; and thirdly, divided into hostile nations, classes and so on. Of course the social process becomes ever more conscious, but it is still very far from consciousness acquiring in it a decisive, or even a very influential, role. And so it will be right up to the abolition of classes. Even in the proletarian struggle, consciousness plays the modest role of a midwife at a birth — it eases what is accomplished apart from it, and what in its essentials cannot be changed.[E5] Marxism foresees an epoch of the triumph of rationality, but for capitalist society it establishes the indubitable dependence of man upon the objective laws of economic development — which happily lead to the doors of a new life, to the kingdom of freedom.[E6]
In the struggle, whose forms are dictated by life, men create for themselves ideals that reflect their social position in a society not determined by them but spontaneously imposed upon them by the whole past. These ideals express the aspirations of peoples, groups and classes; their root is the social position of those who bear them — the social maladies from which they suffer. But classes may occupy various positions in society. They may be progressive or stagnant; that is, their interests may or may not coincide with the progress of technique and with the upheavals which that progress must bring about. In exactly the same way, the whole of society may be undergoing decline, stagnation or development, and may even be undergoing a stormy development of technique. It is here, in this objective fact — in so to speak the social physiology, in the progress or regress of technique, in economic development or economic disintegration, in the approach to dominion over nature or the retreat from it — that the objective criterion for the valuation of ideals lies for the Marxist. For the economic materialist, the highest ideal must a priori be the ideal of the most advanced class in a society developing as rapidly as possible. Or: the advanced class of an economically flourishing society is the bearer of the most vital, strong and luminous ideal. The objective position of the proletariat says a priori to the economic materialist that it is the bearer of the most living, energetic and brilliant ideal of life — or must become it, for "being determines thought"[E7].
Such a class, since the future is its own, has no interest in self-deception or in deceiving others; it dares to look actuality straight in the face, and therefore its ideal will be the most scientific, or the closest to actuality: it will be an anticipation of the real development of society. And in so far as this is so, in that measure it is naturally able to attract to itself the sympathy and cooperation of all that is alive, all that is buoyant, all that is discontented with the present, all that can rise up only with the destruction of the frames that have squeezed the development of humanity's forces. So an ideal can prove its beauty and vitality, its capacity to triumph, only by reference to those objective forces of which it is the reflection — by reference to its physiological, that is socio-economic, lining.
The reader already sees here the incomparable harmony of scientific socialism: as science and as ideal it is of one piece. The socialist ideal and socialist science prop each other up like the two halves of a magnificent arch.
Mr Berdyaev disdained this path. He did not wish to translate the "subjective" language of ideals into the objective language of facts. His metaphysical objectivity is far worse than the eclectic subjectivity of the Narodniks. It was water on the mill of those who strove to tear Marxism apart, to extract the ideal from it and send it off to heaven, and to leave for the earth the creeping realism of reformism. In a whole series of articles, afterwards collected in Studies, Polemical and Critical, the present writer fought against that tendency. But in them he could offer something positive only in passing. Meanwhile the idealist heresy, which gradually and finally detached its former defenders from Marxism, its relative success, the confusion into which it led many — all this proved to the author more clearly than before the necessity of disclosing in a special work the great ideal treasures hidden in Marxism, treasures beside which all the enthusiastic and highly scientific fabrications of the idealists pale. These fabrications are at bottom nothing but the excavation of metaphysical and religious graves through and through. Whereas scientific socialism has taken into itself everything living and beautiful that gave spirit to the dead whom those fabrications disturb. Thus the importance and timeliness of the projected Aesthetics as the Science of Valuations grew in the author's eyes. But its most important part — at once preliminary and crowning — is naturally the philosophical history of religion, including within it the great religious-philosophical systems of modern times and scientific socialism itself.
The history of world-valuations coincides in its essentials with the history of religions and of religious-philosophical systems. That is why such a work is preliminary with respect to aesthetics. It is the working out of perhaps the most important part of "biosociological aesthetics". But at the same time, to place scientific socialism in a definite connection with the history of human religiosity means arriving at the most important of all the results of the whole work.
The author does not renounce the idea of working out the whole Aesthetics as the Science of Valuations, but for the present the form given to the present work seems to him the most suitable.
Scientific socialism has an ideological struggle ahead of it in Russia, as the Social-Democratic party has a political and economic one. And what is at issue is not only the widening of its influence but also self-defence. If Cadet idealism does not take at all with the proletariat, the same cannot be said of the various forms of Christian socialism. For the moment the danger from its arrows seems negligible, but I think it is time to prepare weapons against it, since by many signs, with the further victories of revolutions, the sharp operators of reformism and gradualism will seize upon it outright (from the side of the bourgeoisie, of course) and will find allies in the hazy enthusiasts who have not yet shed the swaddling-clothes of "faith", and above all in the prejudices of the less enlightened strata of the proletariat itself, especially the rural. In my book, therefore, particular attention is paid to Christianity. Its origin, its essence, and the criticism of its spirit in all its transformations occupy perhaps more space than economy would have allowed under other circumstances. Those are the preliminary remarks which I considered it necessary to make.
