Hellas surrounded its prophets with no less veneration than the Jews, and wrapped them in an even more mystical haze. The great philosopher and partly Pythagorean Empedocles sang of Pythagoras: "There was a man of great knowledge, of broad and mighty mind. When he strained all the forces of his spirit, his gaze penetrated far ahead; he saw innumerable things and the destiny of twenty generations." (Empedocles, DK 31 B129; Porphyry, Life of Pythagoras 30)[E191] The learned Porphyry says that Pythagoras was something intermediate between men and gods, and perhaps even an incarnation of Apollo the Pythian or the Hyperborean. The ground for proclaiming the last prophet from the banks of the Jordan as the son of God was prepared by this inclination of the Greeks to honour their prophets highly.
No fewer legends circulated about Plato. The majority of the ancients were certain that he was the son of a god. One Christian writer even asserts that Plato, according to the belief of the pagans, was the son of a god by a virgin.[E192] But the prophets and Jesus himself were ideologists of an oppressed democracy; the Greek prophets — of an aristocracy disintegrating under the onslaught of the popular masses.
To the end of his days Plato penetrated ever deeper into the doctrine of Pythagoras. One may say that, having begun as a Socratic, he ended as a Pythagorean. But the foundations of his original doctrine are even more evident than in Pythagoras. The springs that moved his brilliant thinking were the biological instinct (which may be called the aesthetic) and social interest.
Biological instinct in thinking. By Plato's time the laws of human thinking had become an object of observation for the human mind. The self-criticism of the mind had been begun by the sophists. Logic, dialectic and mathematics were beginning to be defined. One must remember, however, that they arose by no means simply empirically. The nervous-cerebral system is so constituted that it strives to work with the least expenditure of energy; it has its own law of motion, it has a tendency to correct functioning, like the heart, the stomach and so on. Life sets this little machine, which has its law in its own structure, tasks that compel it often to work incorrectly — that is, with an enormous expenditure of forces. When the mind, paying no attention to facts and using only the already "got-into-the-head", so to speak, part of them — that is, concepts — functions according to its own law, it plays and creates systems that greatly please it, perceived by it as something intelligible and gratifying. — But alas, these systems do not live together with the chaos of facts. When the mind, forgetting its rules, reflects facts like a mirror, not trying to get them into its head — that is, to introduce its own order into them, to systematise them — no system results, and the mind sadly states that the world is alien to it, capricious, accidental. Science lies in the middle. The thinking mechanism must become finer and more flexible, must embrace the diversity of facts without losing itself in that diversity, must establish in them the unity of its vital need — systematicity, regularity.
Such is the enormous biological task of the brain. Lightening his thinking, man easily creates such simple representations and concepts as a body identical with itself and stable, a straight line, a point, a regular circle, equal magnitudes, and so on and so forth. All this proves the original coarseness of the senses, which did not notice changes, irregularities and inequalities where they actually existed but "did not catch the eye". It proves too the coarseness of the reason, which could reflect the world only approximately, in simplified, so to speak stylised, forms. But Plato did not think so. Obeying a strong biological (aesthetic) instinct — the joyful feeling experienced when the reason contains concepts simple and pure, when the brain functions correctly, and the bitter feeling on stating the "confused, dark, accidental" course of things — Plato proclaimed the law of his imperfect life, of his imperfect mind, to be the law of being. He might have said, had he examined himself: "I want the laws of my thought to become the laws of nature."
And since he could not achieve this, he, saving his life-instinct, loudly declared that this confused nature is not the real one, that there is another, real nature — the nature of ideas, whose laws coincide with the laws of the mind, and that the world is only its distorted reflection. Plato was right: the human mind must achieve the coincidence of its laws with the laws of being. He stood infinitely higher than those who renounced this religious task (the reconciliation, in this sphere, of the laws of life and the laws of nature), but the process of that reconciliation was terribly complex. It is performed by science, which, so to speak, makes facts lawful without trimming them and without cursing them when they do not lie on its Procrustean bed — instead modifying the bed itself, yet in such a way that it does not thereby lose its humanly rational character. Colossal experience has shown that, going along this path, man arrives at a firm consciousness of reality. Platonism was an aberration of the life-instinct. Striving towards the beauty of thinking, it lightened its task by substituting a world of phantoms for the real world. The imperfections of its own too rectilinear, compass-like reason it declared sacred, and transferred the accusation to the facts.
All metaphysics is a similar aberration. It is right in the depth of its instinct: "I want the coincidence of the laws of reason and of the world, the transparent intelligibility of the world for reason, its rationality." But it is not right when it childishly scolds the world for being unintelligible, and having invented another, simpler and easier one, with the haughtiness of a king from a madhouse decrees it the title of a higher world.
We know that the philosophical thought of Hellas before Plato went by a more correct path. The Ionian school naively believed in the identity of reason and being. The Ionians did not feel the rupture; the world was whole for them. It does not yet occur to Pythagoras to construct another world and transfer his cognition from the world of real being into the world of being (of supposed being) that is ideal. For him the world is one, but it has noble parts (the luminaries), where the laws of mathematics (harmony) are easily applicable, and ignoble ones, where pure mathematics is powerless. But by way of the musical education of man, by the introduction of music — that is, of rhythm — into the life of society, Pythagoras hopes to help the mathematisation of the so to speak "vale of sorrow". This is because Pythagoras still makes heroic efforts to subordinate the social chaos (the demos) to order (the aristocracy). But Plato is utterly without hope in this respect. In this world he, the ideologist of a class evidently being squeezed out of life, has nothing to do: why spend efforts on attaining an ideal — let us turn our gaze to that shore, let us inquire about our lot beyond the grave.
Biological instinct in sensation and movement. In the Laws Plato says that every animal can move, play, develop — but to man alone is given the power to introduce rhythm and plastic beauty into his movements: to dance. Every animal loves to cry out, to wail — but man introduces rhythm and purity of sound here too: he sings. And when he sings and dances — he rejoices.[E193] The point is that not only the brain but the whole organism has its own laws, dictated by its very structure. It lives by adapting to the influences of the environment and at the same time not violating its own planned organisation. A perfect organism, developed somewhere in a world of the gods, outside the pressure of living facts, would be destroyed upon entering the life of our planet. An organism passively adapting to the environment would cease to be an organism. So Plato is right when he says: a beautiful dance and a beautiful song — those are the true gait and the true speech of men. But from the fact that in life one cannot sing and dance all the time, making song and dance a glorification of virtue, which for Plato is identified with the highest deity, Plato drew the conclusion that man has lost his way in some world alien to him. Plato despised labour, effort. Labour degrades and cripples man; it is unworthy of a free man to labour. "I want the laws of rhythm and plasticity to subjugate life to themselves." And rightly so. For us this means: to make labour pleasant, creative, a true enjoyment, and to throw purely mechanical, blunting work onto the steel shoulders of machines.[E194] But that is a whole enormous programme. It is technology that now occupies itself with this religious task (the reconciliation of the laws of life and the laws of the environment). Plato solved the task to a certain degree by dividing men into classes and throwing the economy and labour (the handicraft) onto the metics and slaves. He apparently did not notice all the monstrousness of such a solution of the task in the light of an ideal representation of human dignity. But even an aristocratism à l'outrance did not save the "master" from cares and unpleasantnesses. No, the earth was not created for blessedness.
The organs of perception likewise have their own laws; they too take pleasure only when they function correctly — hence the loveliness of beautiful lines, colours, sounds (easily perceivable elements). Besides which, man perceives not only with eye and ear but with his whole being, sympathetically reliving what he contemplates: hence the enjoyment of animal beauty and strength, health, intelligence, grace and so on. But does the earth favour us with the contemplation only of beautiful things? Not to speak of the deformities, old age, disease, motleyness and cacophony met with everywhere — does the most beautiful thing on earth fully satisfy us? The humanly beautiful only awakens the thought of the divinely beautiful. There is no perfection on earth — that is, we bear in our organs and nerves an ideal, not yet achieved by anyone anywhere, of the luxuriantly unfolded life of a beautiful earth. "Is this not my memory of something better once lived through?" says Plato. And if so, then this pitiful world is not worth loving, and one must concern oneself only with making it possible to penetrate into the higher world.
And Plato joyfully clutches at the metaphysical religiosity of Orphism, at the promise of a life beyond the grave.
Where we see a programme for the re-creation of the world, Plato saw only a condemnation of the real and a hope in a ready-made ideal hovering somewhere. Thus this was an aberration of life. To go along the path of creation, cognition and labour, having so high an ideal and feeling so clearly the defects of reality, is possible only with a deep faith in the might of man, in the force of labour, in progress. The withering aristocracy did not have this faith. There remained one way out: the detached idealism of declaring the dream the most actual actuality, and actuality a mirage.
Social interest. It would be wrong to say that Plato resolutely and at once gave up the real world in despair. True, in depicting his Republic he declared outright that this is a state situated in the heavens, which men ought to imitate as far as they can.[E195] Yet in the Laws he created another, no less aristocratic order, of which it was said that it is adapted to the imperfection of the earth but is not far from the ideal.
He even promised a third order, the last child of his opportunism. As a pure utopian he dreamed of a philosopher-tyrant who would forcibly drive men into the ideal order. Hating tyranny (see for instance book 9 of the Republic, where it is said that the tyrant is a consummate villain), he nonetheless travelled repeatedly to Sicily to the elder and the younger Dionysius. These journeys ended deplorably. Once Dionysius, in a rage, even sold Plato into slavery. Pythagoras's attempts are majestic and tragic; Plato's attempts are comic. As is well known, it is always so in history.
Plato's social ideal almost coincides with Pythagoras's: the rule of sages, communism for the aristocracy, complete stagnation and absolute obedience. Not for nothing are there so many striking analogies between Pythagoreanism and China, even in the philosophical respect. To consolidate order at any cost — that is, to put an end to all development; "every change is bad in itself"[E196], our philosopher teaches. To fix the inequality of men by indicating to each his place. For this one must set in motion both the fables of the sages (the pious lie of specially invented myths) and the sword of the warriors.
This time Plato's ideal has nothing in common with our ideal. We are men of progress and equality. Plato would have rejected our ideal. Progress and equality are human ideals. Plato was first of all an Athenian eupatrid, and only afterwards a man.
But at least in his ideal there remained something living: sociality, first — organisation as distinct from anarchic individualism, though an organisation distorted, since it was based on principles of inequality rather than on a brotherly division of labour; the high role of cognition, secondly — though a distorted cognition, since the speculative method was acknowledged the only fit one; the instinct of conquest, thirdly — though in the crude primitive form of colonial wars rather than as an illumined thirst to subjugate the elements; economic concern, fourthly — though it was acknowledged to be lower.
In the later idealists even these last elements, or their shadows, disappeared.
The essence of Plato's religion is the longing for perfection. Perfection is the world of Ideas, inaccessible to the body, accessible only to the soul — the aristocratic principle in us. The soul no longer strives, as with Pythagoras, to master the body; it hastens to throw it off. But as an aristocrat not yet fallen wholly into decadence, Plato preaches only moderation, not the mortification of the flesh. Health, strength and beauty still seem to him steps upward. But the decadent idealists and democrats, infected with the same decadence, by a head.[E197] Plato is still a cosmist, though his cosmos is already definitively a humanised, idealised reflection of actuality, exalted above the latter. He already idealistically triumphs over actuality, already proclaims the ideal higher than reality — but the ideal itself reflects in him the real cosmos, with the representation of man as an enormous part of the whole entering into that concept. Plato's God is still the world — but the world as Plato's aesthetic and social instinct demanded it.
Plato kindled longing in hearts, broke the shackles of the beautiful cosmos — of nature — but only in order to put upon man the imaginary shackles of an ideal cosmos.
The God of Israel is not the world at all, but spirit, and above all will — the Will to might and to justice. In this the God of Israel is higher than Plato's God. Ancient cosmism says: I bow before the world and its laws. Plato says: I do not accept the world, I build another, better world in dreams, I worship it, I reject life for the sake of the dream, I proclaim it the sole actuality.
Israel says: I do not accept the laws of the world; over the world there must reign a mighty, living, man-like will, leading it towards illumination and justice.
Let us note here that Christianity will mix both the last theses to the great detriment of each, and will then begin extricating itself from its own unbearable contradictions. The religion of labour says: accepting the world as material that ought to be worked over, we accept the ideal too as the plan of re-creation. Will and justice — or the kingdom of organised humanity — will come; but for the present it is not yet here, it is only being born in torments.[E198]
So: is Platonism progress compared with cosmism? Yes and no. And so it goes further on as well.
