Pythagoras's central idea consists in acknowledging the sublunar world — the whole "heaven", the cosmos minus the earth — as an absolute order. This beautiful, absolute order serves as a contrast to the disorder of the earth. The task of society is to divine the law of the higher order and to bring earthly life nearer to it, to harmonise the personal and social life of man with the eternal laws of the cosmos, as far as is possible for that lower belt of life which has fallen to our lot.
Being an aristocrat to the marrow, Pythagoras could not fail to discern dualism in nature, for the social struggle of terrible "anarchy" and beautiful "order" struck his eye too vividly, echoed too painfully in his heart. As in society there exists a tendency to disintegration, chaos, and, so to speak, raw human material, so does it exist in nature too: this is τὸ ἄλλο, the changeable, τὸ ἄπειρον — the infinite, that is, the unfinished. The principle of order is finishedness — πέρας, and its highest form is unity.
The One, the unit, is the heart of the cosmos, its centre, full of living fire; it is its most divine part. But the One has conquered the whole world; it embraces the whole of it; it is both its centre and its outermost periphery, the flaming wall of the universe. Yet the universe is not simply a uniform divine sphere, as the Eleatics later taught. Between the flaming wall and Hestia, the hearth — the heart — lies a broad band in which the luminaries revolve in planned order, sounding in harmonious chorus. The last among them is the earth. It too revolves around Hestia. The idea of the central position of the earth Pythagoras rejected: how should it, steeped in sin, be at the centre? We do not even see the marvellous Hestia, for, as we revolve, we constantly turn towards her, so to speak, the earth's back, its underside, where there is nothing living. The sun is a mirror reflecting the rays of Hestia, and it is by that reflection that we live. So did Pythagoras magnify the world — yet he did not for a moment counterpose to the real world an otherworldly one. How then did this intermediate belt arise, in which a gradation from low to high reigns? Like this: the One, the fire of the universe, breathes; it draws into itself matter — that is, the nothing surrounding its sphere; this nothing, penetrating the sphere, mingles with the unit in various proportions. Some of these proportions are beautiful and luminous, others worse. The key to the proportion between the finite and the infinite, and consequently the essence of every given proportion — that is, of every thing — is number. The odd numbers are closer to the unit: they are finished. The even are further: they resemble ἄπειρον more, the unfinished. The decad (10) is also the unit in another of its manifestations: as one it generates all numbers, as ten it embraces them. So the substance of the world is numbers — that is, the law of the proportion of perfect unity and non-being; multiplicity is the offspring of number, the union of the one and the nothing. There is no evil in the world. Beyond the world is nothing; within the world everything is ensouled by numbers, and every number is holy — but in the world there is a gradation of perfection. The earthly vale is governed by the worst numbers, the proportion is most unfavourable: hence everything here is destroyed, everything is short-lived, hence here there is a confusion of movements instead of the beautiful regular geometry of the heaven. The soul of man is a number, a harmonic proportion of unity and parts. What in it is kin to unity — is immortal.
Such is the harmonious doctrine of Pythagoras.
Here the characteristic striving is visible: having acknowledged dualism, to fuse it in unity. Spirit has entered matter, but its foundation lies outside it; it has no wish at all to escape from its tenacious embraces (as in Plato); it does not look upon its marriage with non-being as a fall; it breathes it and creates with it beautiful proportions, harmony, cosmos. So too on earth the aristocrat has no need to despair and pine for death and the afterlife, for an ideal beyond the stars; he must be able to create a beautiful proportion out of society, harmoniously governing it. Then he will be a fellow-worker of the god-unit, the god-monad; he will raise his own soul too and will naturally rise in the scale of beings on the wings of the realised harmony of his soul, and draw near to the heart of the god-world.
The second extremely characteristic feature of Pythagorean aristocratic idealism is the glorification of finiteness and closedness as something higher than infinity. The aesthetics of development is utterly alien to Pythagoras, as is the aesthetics of the boundless: perfection is equal to itself and occupies a definite, limited space. This is an apotheosis of limitedness, in complete contrast with the reverence before the beauty of the boundless which is proper to the modern soul. Pythagoras's idealism remains still immanent, and that is good. It does not yet break the shackles of limitedness — that is bad. Plato will go further in both respects, unconsciously paving the way for Christianity, from which he would probably have recoiled in horror.
A short exposition of Pythagoras's religious philosophy cannot give a correct idea of the greatness of his religious attempt. One must see the divine man in his political practice.
Dicaearchus depicts Pythagoras as follows at his appearance in Croton: "He was a man of about forty, tall, full of grace, with a dignified manner of speaking; his figure and face were truly beautiful, so that he was at first compared, and afterwards identified, with Apollo the Hyperborean. He was always gravely serious and permitted himself neither to jest nor to smile.
Eloquent, inspired, deeply learned, he was filled with experience gathered in travels and in conversations with the greatest sages of the whole world."[E188] At the beginning of his activity in Croton Pythagoras sought a broad influence on the masses — he shook the crowd, the effect of his speeches was magical. After his first sermon he acquired two thousand ardent adherents; the aristocratic council of a thousand, which already had to struggle with the demands of the demos, scented in the new prophet a great ally. On the proposal of the authorities Pythagoras delivered speeches to the young men, then to the women. The youth and the women of the aristocracy generally became self-sacrificing, enraptured adepts of the new doctrine. The authorities offered Pythagoras the post of chairman of the council. He declined this proposal and preferred to remain outside power and above it.
His ideal was a moral state founded on blind obedience to the aristocracy. But the aristocracy had to be re-educated on new principles. Concluding an alliance with the existing aristocracy, Pythagoras was preparing a new one among the young, organising the chosen youth into a special educational and philosophical brotherhood. Unfortunately we cannot dwell here on the rules of the brotherhood. We can only say that it produced hardened and highly disciplined characters. To create a complete unity of temper among the elect, Pythagoras not only restored the Dorian aristocratic syssitia, the common meals, but recommended community of property — an aristocratic communism. Thus he created a terrible, half-secret force, something like a spiritual order, to which in his dreams he assigned the role of leader of humanity.
At the same time, as a subtle politician, Pythagoras persuaded the ruling class that the reforms he was introducing by degrees were an ancient tradition. The Pythagorean Democleides, rejecting the demands of the demos for a series of reforms, called for living according to the precepts of the fathers.
And to influence the coarse minds of the unenlightened masses, Pythagoras did not disdain cunningly staged sham miracles. Branches were established everywhere: not only Croton, but Tarentum, Heraclea, Metapontum, Sybaris and Acragas were already more or less in the hands of the aristocratic sect, terrible in its conviction and consistency.
Meanwhile the Greek world was splitting. The expulsion of the Peisistratids gave a new impulse to the democratic movement. Pythagoreanism spread in circles from Croton, democratism from Athens. The waves met. Which would conquer? The Greek love of freedom, or the Greek love of order? The democrats rose in luxurious Sybaris. Taken unawares, the Pythagoreans fled to their centre, Croton. Pythagoras understood that the decisive moment had come. A huge army of enraged Sybarites demanded the surrender of the five hundred fugitives. Croton was not ready for war. But Pythagoras staked everything. He brought into play all his influence, all his unearthly eloquence, and persuaded them to answer the rebellious rabble of Sybaris with a proud refusal. The small army of the Crotonians, under the command of the ideally handsome and strong Milo, Pythagoras's son-in-law, routed the Sybarites utterly. The victors entered the city and, in order to instil terror in all the enemies of the divine order, with the fury of fanatics destroyed the flourishing colony to its foundations.
The Pythagoreans reached the apogee of power. Now they no longer concealed their plans and took the Crotonian people too in a tight grip. Their arrogant fanaticism seemed unbearable. The adroit orator Cylon, not admitted by Pythagoras into the order, put himself at the head of the democratic movement. The accusation he flung against the order at a huge assembly he had convened is extremely curious: "they lovingly repeat Homer's verses about the shepherd of the people," said Cylon, "the people are for them a senseless flock; only they are men, half-gods." He accused them of tyranny from behind a corner, of having ceased to convene the popular assembly. The people trembled with wrath and would not listen to justifications. All the pride of the free Greek rose against the thought of a commandment of unquestioning obedience to a higher breed of men. The storm was so strong that Pythagoras tried to calm it by condemning himself to exile. The order, with Milo at its head, deliberated by night, preparing a bloody suppression. But Cylon knew his enemies. He forestalled them himself, attacking Milo's house while the forty highest minds of the order were deliberating there. The Pythagoreans defended themselves like lions. They were locked in the house and burned. Then the slaughter of the rest began. For a decade there reigned in Croton that "storm of violence" which Pythagoras so hated — and it reigned thanks to him.
He himself withdrew to Locri. The Locrians received him with honours and with fear, and informed him that they had no need of new laws, and begged him, a dangerous prophet, to leave the city. The great old man set out for Metapontum.
There he entered the temple of the Muses and sat upon a tripod — tall, beautiful, thoughtful and silent. The Metapontians timidly approached the entrance and looked at the motionless philosopher. When hunger and thirst had weakened him, he leaned against a column. And he sat, plunged in divine arithmetic and geometry, so long as his thought worked. And then death came. The great attempt to spread the Apollonian, Dorian-aristocratic principles, in an illumined philosophico-religious form, over the whole of Hellas — collapsed. The aristocracy begins to pine, to tear the chains of cosmic harmony, to dream of another world. The immortality of the soul was understood by Pythagoras in a peculiar way: the soul is the proportion of the body; after the death of one body it passes into another, and may rise or fall in the process. Pythagoras knows neither a pure soul nor pure matter. He accepts Orphism, which fits beautifully into his philosophy — but only the later Pythagoreans would speak of the salvation of the soul or of the body, would tear form and matter apart. For Pythagoras, number (the soul) is substance, matter is simple nothing, the bodily man an external manifestation of the number that transmutes non-being into being. The proportion is imperfect — therefore the body changes, ages, disintegrates, and the soul is compelled to create for itself a new young body, having improved or worsened the proportion according as the previous life turned out. In the golden verses, a kind of commandments of the Pythagoreans, it is said: "Purity of life will prepare you for the understanding of God and of man; you will come to value things rightly. You will see how often man runs towards danger, how often he does not see the happiness placed by the gods quite close by, does not know the medicine for his sufferings. Men are the playthings of chance." (Pythagorean Golden Verses 45–58)[E189]
Such is the result of a bad proportion. But still the divine number, the reflection of the one, lives in us, and therefore "believe in yourself, be courageous, for man belongs to the race of the gods." (Pythagorean Golden Verses 63)[E190] He has hope, he has a path to true freedom — that is, to a firm place in the divine order. Diogenes Laertius transmits this Pythagorean doctrine: the moral life frees the soul from the chains of passion and grants freedom — that is, the triumph of the laws of its thinking and its movement.
Freedom is the triumph of the higher law; slavery is the freedom of human passions.
Freedom is the triumph of the absolute aristocracy; slavery is the triumph of democracy.
Plato will say the same, but will declare the ideal unattainable, and death alone the deliverer.
