The Materialists
The shadow of God lives on in deism and in pantheism. But the materialists finally take the decisive step. A social motive impels them toward it. The revolutionary aspirations of the French bourgeoisie, its hatred of the feudal aristocracy and especially of the clergy, the intolerable grip of the old regime upon its growing youthful forces, overcame, in a considerable part of it, its fear of the people’s Acheron. In religion, in the dualism of spirit and body, they sense both a reflection and a support of the old authoritarian order, the dualism of masters and servants, among the latter of whom the bourgeoisie still finds itself. It is necessary not merely to recognize the law-governed nature of the world’s mechanism for the purpose of gaining economic mastery over the forces of nature; it is also necessary to proclaim the complete intelligibility, the rationality, of everything that exists, in the sense of its being accessible to reason in its entirety. This immediately put the ideologists of the bourgeois order, the secular intelligentsia, in the place of the idealists of the old order, the clergy. But this was not all: there was a desire to exalt matter, for in philosophy it was the symbol of the ‘roture,’ the commonalty, just as spirit was the symbol of the two ruling estates. Sieyès would say: ‘The third estate has been nothing; it wishes to be everything.’ The same thing is expressed in the materialists’ cry flung in the spiritualists’ faces: for you matter is nothing, prope nihil; for us it is everything.
The revolutionary position of the materialists gave their thoughts a brilliant sweep. The upper classes upheld the image of God, created in the image and likeness of unlimited earthly power; it was easy for the materialists to discover a tyrant in him and strike at him precisely from this angle. Diderot exclaims:
> “Judging by the image of the supreme being presented to me, by his inclination to anger, by the severity of his vengeance, by the multitude he allows to perish compared with the few to whom he deigns to extend a saving hand, the most righteous soul might wish that he did not exist.”
And with every further step materialism drives God out. Nor does it accept pantheism, for it senses in it a restriction upon reason, upon a reason that thinks mathematically and mechanically, striving to explain everything from a single principle, and an elementary one at that. Pantheism complicates nature, supposing behind its forces some further unknown and unprovable depths. Materialism simplifies nature; for the sake of clarity in the picture, it ignores, discards, and denies a great deal. It is ready to deny ‘spirit’ even within itself; it is ready to mechanize even itself, the thinking and willing human being, for the sake of the coherence of its militant worldview.
Determinism, in the form dictated by a fully developed mechanistic worldview, undoubtedly denies freedom of the will, denies it outright, turning the will into an illusion and something wholly unnecessary in a true picture of nature. While one of the early materialists, Hartley, in advancing the proposition that thought is the product of a mechanism operating necessarily according to the laws of the material world, expresses a certain horror at his own conclusion and says that he reached it only after long investigations and a long struggle, Hobbes, resolutely accepting the same standpoint, seems unaware of its deadening, humanly degrading significance.
But we see the true triumph of determinism in the writings of the French materialists. The System of Nature emphasizes in every way the necessity reigning over humanity. According to it, the individual moves during social movements with the same necessity as particles of dust swept up by a storm. The individual is regarded as something essentially passive. And indeed, where is activity to be sought in a world of necessities?
> “In the terrible convulsions which sometimes seize political societies and often bring about the overthrow of the state, there is not a single action, a single word, a single thought, a single movement of the will, or a single passion in the actors participating in the revolution, whether as destroyers or as victims, that is not necessary, that does not act as it must act, that does not inevitably produce the effects it must produce in accordance with the position occupied by the actors in this moral storm. This would be clear to a mind capable of understanding and assessing every action and reaction taking place in the spirit and body of the participants.”
Everything is moved from without, everything is something moved, and in the end there is nowhere any mover. A strange paradox results: a dead perpetuum mobile. Each separate part of it cannot but be conscious of its absolute dependence on the whole, of the illusory nature of its independent existence. Diderot says:
> “Circumstances, the general current, carry one person onto the path of glory, another onto the path of disgrace. Shame and remorse are childish inventions born of the ignorance and vanity of a being that claims credit or blame for a compelled moment.”
So, away with ‘vanity’: let us acknowledge ourselves as a ‘compelled moment,’ and nothing more. But if every moment and every particle of nature is compelled, then nature as a whole is dead as well, for materialism recognizes no hierarchy of some parts and moments over others! All the parts of the universe are slaves, and so is the universe itself. Whose slave? The slave of an empty formula, of mechanical law, of a necessity that exists nowhere and reigns everywhere.
Nor is this all: nature is further broken up into an innumerable multitude of atoms; it is their mechanical combination. The motion of each atom is determined entirely by the motion of the whole immeasurable mass of atoms surrounding it. Not one of them is a center of forces; each merely receives impulses and passively submits to them. Consequently there is submission everywhere, submission not to anything higher, but to a blind, faceless multitude.
By consistently developing this worldview, thinkers such as Le Dantec came up against the bleakest pessimism that has ever existed.[18](#note-18)
Is it any wonder that the young Goethe greeted the central book of this school with a feeling of contemptuous disgust?
> “How dreary and empty we felt in this mournful atmosphere of atheistic midnight, in which both the earth with all its creatures and the heavens with all their constellations disappear. There is supposed to be matter moving from eternity, and this matter, by moving right and left and in every direction, is supposed, without further ado, to produce the infinite phenomena of existence. We could even have been content with all this if the author had actually constructed a world before our eyes out of his moving matter. But he knows as little about nature as we do, for, having established a few general concepts, he immediately abandons them in order to turn what appears above the natural, or as a higher nature within nature, into a material, heavy nature which, though admittedly in motion, is nevertheless without direction or form, and he imagines that he gains a very great deal by this.”
He calls Holbach’s book ‘the quintessence of senility,’ and will not even allow that it could be harmful.
But Goethe was mistaken: everything he said is fully applicable only to the kind of ‘thoroughgoing mechanism’ developed by certain contemporary bourgeois thinkers.
Atomism and necessity are, of course, genuine products of the bourgeois order, in which every individual (the Latin individuum is equivalent to the Greek atomon) feels isolated and, in his isolation, powerless before the elemental forces of an anarchic economy that play with him like a toy. But the revolutionary-minded bourgeoisie of the eighteenth century had not yet managed critically to uncover the full horror of the worldview that fits the horror of the capitalist social order like a glove. The worldview of contemporary materialists of Le Dantec’s type is pessimistic, whereas that of Holbach and Diderot, the authors of the System of Nature, was optimistic. More than that: eighteenth-century materialism was religious in its own way! First, however much it drives God out, he returns: the word ‘nature’ is put in place of the word ‘God.’ The laws of nature were by no means regarded as mere results of the spontaneous movements of being, but as its rational foundations; above all, faith in the goodness of nature was strong. What saved them was the idea of the rationality of existence inherited from the deists, this last form of reverent faith; what saved them was ignorance of the true essence of the rational-individualistic social order for which they were fighting. It still lay ahead and aroused lively hopes.
The very title of the book read: ‘System of Nature, or the Laws of the Physical World and the Moral World.’
Nature is the totality of laws according to which eternal matter moves eternally. The quantity of matter and motion is unchanging; nothing disappears, nothing arises from nothing. Nature is a great whole; man is a part of it and subject to its influence; his moral being is merely a particular aspect of his physical being. Everything can be understood by reason, formulated precisely, and predicted in advance. Once this is grasped, life’s misfortunes and fantastic fears will dissipate. What faith breathes from the words: ‘Man is unhappy only because he knows nature poorly.’ Materialism preaches liberation from the fetters of prejudice, unwaveringly trusting that truth is beautiful and consoling.
> “From error come the shameful fetters that tyrants and priests have everywhere succeeded in placing upon nations; from error came the slavery under which nations have languished; from error come the horrors of religion, which have caused people to grow dull with fear or, in their fanaticism, to kill one another over chimeras. From error come deep-rooted malice and cruel persecution, continual bloodshed and outrageous tragedies of which the earth has had to become the stage in the name of the interests of heaven. Let us therefore try to dispel the fog of prejudice and inspire man with courage and respect for his own reason. Whoever cannot renounce his dreams may at least allow others to fashion their views in their own way and cherish the conviction that, for the inhabitants of the earth, the chief business is to be just, benevolent, and peaceable.”
Thus, by looking nature straight in the face, we can attain courage and self-respect. Do the authors of the System of Nature mean by this that life will immediately and naturally flow on, filled with justice and peaceableness? Apparently, such is their faith. The order of nature is beneficent. At the same time it is an entirely objective order, independent both of man and of a manlike God.
Of this order Baron Holbach writes:
> “But since everything in the world is equally necessary, nowhere in nature can there be a distinction between order and disorder. If we nevertheless wish to apply these concepts to nature, order can mean nothing other than the regular succession of phenomena brought about by the inevitable laws of nature. Disorder, on the contrary, remains a relative concept, embracing only those phenomena that disrupt the form of a particular being’s existence, whereas, viewed from the standpoint of the great whole, no disruption exists. There is no order or disorder in nature. We see order in everything that accords with our being, and disorder in everything opposed to it.”
But does this not itself acknowledge the existence of two orders: order according to human criteria, and order as the inexorable succession of elemental processes? Can it be maintained that these two orders do not clash? Can it be maintained that the ideals of particular people, nations, groups, and especially classes do not contradict one another? The materialists unambiguously call for subjective conceptions of order, that is, human ideals, to be cast aside, and for life to be subordinated to objective order. For them this meant, of course, being revolutionaries, since, taking their stand on the order of nature, they strove to destroy the absurd order built on prejudices. But later the understanding of the laws of nature and morality as something absolute, dictated to man from outside, was bound to reveal its anti-revolutionary character. Rousseau foresaw this, fiercely attacking the Encyclopedists for debasing man before his environment.
In an appendix to the System of Nature bearing the characteristic title ‘Code of the Laws of Nature,’ Diderot enthusiastically sings the praises of the sovereign mistress, Nature. The author places in her mouth the demand that humanity follow her laws and thereby enjoy happiness. Diderot’s religious optimism is beyond doubt, and here we still see a religion that calls upon man to bow before external forces. For Diderot, Nature is the sole deity ‘to whom it is lawful to burn incense and bow down.’ If Truth, Reason, and Virtue are proclaimed goddesses, they are at the same time declared to be ‘daughters of Nature.’ Indeed, for Diderot truth is merely nature as known, reason the very capacity to know her, and virtue the capacity to follow her commands unquestioningly.
Entirely alien to the eighteenth-century materialists is the conception that nature is ‘une lutte universelle,’ a universal struggle, in which these very organisms, species, and societies are streams of processes more or less harmonized internally, striving to adapt everything around them to their own form of existence, to assimilate, draw into their own current, and organize in their own image and likeness or for their own use the elements of their environment, that is, other streams of the same kind.
Insofar as Holbach approached such a view, he stopped at self-preservation alone:
> “To be means nothing other than to move in a certain individual manner; to preserve oneself means to impart or receive such motions as determine the continuation of individual existence. A stone resists destruction through the simple cohesion of its particles; organized beings do so by more complex means. The striving for preservation is called inertia in physics and self-love in morality.”
But for the higher forms of being, to be means not merely to preserve oneself, but also to grow, reproduce, and wage an offensive war. And here it becomes clear that human society, and above all its progressive classes, has not the slightest reason to bow before the rationality of its environment and submit to it. Man familiarizes himself with the properties of his environment and its order only in order to overcome it; the human order, the ideal of society’s advanced classes, must be realized, must come to reign over the elemental order. Therefore nothing can stand higher for man than man, if we are speaking of man in general. The concrete human being, the individual, does have something to value more highly than himself: the element to which he belongs, human society in its historical development, the human species laboring and perfecting itself.
Robinet stands out among the other materialists for the clarity with which he poses the question of free will. He does not break with the mechanical determinism characteristic of the other materialists, but he ingeniously combines external determinism and internal freedom, following, in this, Leibniz and Spinoza:
> “The movement of my hand is voluntary because it follows my will. Considered from outside, the arising of this will is as naturally necessary as its connection with its effect. But for the subject this natural necessity disappears, and freedom alone appears to exist. Subjectively, the will follows only its own motives of a spiritual kind, but objectively these in turn are conditioned by necessary processes in the corresponding fibers of the brain.”
The question arises, however: would anything in the processes of life change if consciousness were absent?
Contemporary parallelism has four branches.
1) Materialist parallelists say: the physiological process of life is essential and fundamental; certain parts of this process are accompanied by an epiphenomenon, consciousness. There is no point asking why this is so: it is so, and that is the end of it. Even if the ‘epiphenomenon’ did not exist, nothing in the world would change; it is merely a strange accompaniment, an unnecessary luxury of nature.
2) Spiritualist parallelists regard the spiritual process as fundamental, and physiology as its necessary expression. Extending their parallelism to all life and all nature, declaring that all matter in general is the external manifestation of spirit, they can nevertheless still be considered orthodox Spinozists, because in this case Spinoza can be turned either way.
3) Monists of the old type expressed parallelism thus: physiological and psychical processes are parallel expressions of some third, unknowable thing.
4) The new monists, such as Plekhanov, are most faithful to Spinoza’s spirit and already go beyond Robinet’s standpoint. They hold that talk of a third, unknowable thing should be forgotten, and disputes about the priority of psyche or physiology ended: these are parallel phenomena of equal importance, linked by functional interdependence, and nothing more. According to this view, to speak of the absence of consciousness where organic life is present is as absurd as to speak of the right-hand side of a sheet of paper while denying the existence of its left-hand side. Acts of consciousness do not seem to the new monists to be something superfluous, a luxury. On the contrary, their role in the economy of life is enormous, like that of their organ, the nervous and cerebral system. This system is understood not as a simple mechanical transmitter from external stimuli to reactions, but as a living organ of memory, comparison, and the plastic development of new combinations of reactions.
Certain energeticists go further still: for them the brain is a living apparatus that creates a new form of energy, psychical energy, out of chemical, electrical, and other energies. This new form of energy proved so important an adaptation for the organism that its appearance in minimal quantities in the most complex processes occurring in protoplasm was immediately taken up by selection and developed with enormous richness and power. The electric eel or ray has the ability to produce electrical energy; if this ability were as important and advantageous for life as the ability to be conscious of one’s surroundings (to perceive, to feel with the coloring of pleasure and displeasure, to remember, to combine sensations and representations, to direct the stream of living energy one way or another and thus modify one’s reaction), we would undoubtedly have developed an elaborate organ for transforming the energies we absorb into electrical energy. In the opinion of the adherents of this view, Ward, Jennings, and others, psychical energy is related to and commensurable with all other energies, the sole difference being that motion, heat, and electricity occur apart from organisms as well, whereas psychical energy occurs only in connection with them. Science, however, has no objective proof of the existence of a psychological form of energy.
In any event, none of the contemporary positivists, of course, defends metaphysical finalism, that is, upholds the existence of purposes arising without a cause. Acts of willing, desires, purposes, and ideals undoubtedly arise from the phenomena that condition and precede them. But this does not prevent them from being forces, forces that direct our motor, neuromuscular energy and, through it, humanity’s technical forces, and thus influence the configuration of the world.
The rejection of finalism, the recognition of the will as a phenomenon that is conditioned and subject to conditioning, yet at the same time significant, valuable, and itself a conditioning factor, makes the following thought of Holbach’s eminently acceptable.
> “If, relying on experience, we knew the elements that form the foundations of a person’s temperament or that of the majority of individuals in a nation, we would know what suits their nature, the laws they need, and the institutions beneficial to them. In short, morality and politics could derive from materialism a benefit that the dogma of the immateriality of the soul can never give them, and that it prevents us from even thinking about.”
Marx’s historical materialism elucidates precisely those elements under whose influence the personality is cast into one characteristic form or another.
In general, modern thought, and especially socialist thought, takes from materialism everything in it that is active or can serve as a support for activity, and discards everything passive, narrow, and one-sided. We shall be convinced of this by carefully examining Marx’s and Engels’s attitude toward eighteenth-century materialism.
