The main impetus to the development and triumph of the mechanistic worldview came, as we have already said, from the progress of industry. In England and France this took different forms. In England, the fortunes of industry and exact science were taken in hand by a nobility that had become bourgeois or risen from the bourgeoisie. It had no reason to wage war on the clergy, no need to rely on the masses and free them from their prejudices. It was by no means revolutionary. The politically revolutionary middle class of that time, the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, was, in its bulk, rather reactionary economically and culturally. The flowering of art, and especially of science, during the English Restoration stood in sharp contrast to the mores prevailing during the revolution. Macaulay characterizes the age of Charles II in the following words:
> “Trade and industry rose to a height that earlier times could not even have dreamed of. Communications were improved, long-abandoned mines reopened, all with the energy characteristic of periods of material enterprise, which, wherever it is strongly aroused, favorably affects energy and the spirit of enterprise in other respects as well. At this time England’s great cities began to spring from the ground or to grow to such gigantic proportions that, in less than two centuries, England became the richest country in the world.”
The king himself studied physics and had a laboratory.
> “Lords, prelates, and jurists devoted their leisure hours to hydrostatic investigations. Barometers and optical instruments were manufactured for the most varied uses; elegant aristocratic ladies spent their time in laboratories and had the tricks of magnetic and electrical attraction demonstrated to them. The aristocrats’ aimless curiosity and vain dilettantism combined with the specialists’ rigorous and thorough study, and England set out along the path of progress in the natural sciences, as though vindicating Bacon’s predictions.”
The philosophical tendencies of these people had already been expressed by Hobbes, who declared that God bore witness to himself only through nature and the state. Nature, according to Hobbes, gets along quite easily without the hypothesis of God, whereas the state clings tenaciously to it for frankly police purposes.
The great scientist Boyle expressed the philosophy of deism with the greatest clarity: for him the world is an enormous mechanism, something like the famous Strasbourg clock with its many ingenious automata; but the world is far more complex and ingenious even than the Strasbourg clock, and it would be absurd to suppose that it had come into being without a clockmaker, and a most ingenious and powerful one at that. Having made his clock, the universe, God apparently settled into everlasting repose; the clock runs on by itself and has no need of his intervention. To suppose that anything in it needs repairing, cleaning, or altering is blasphemy and distrust of the clockmaker’s genius. This was logical and convenient. Newton held almost the same position: God seemed to him necessary in order to give the world its first impulse; having given this impulse, God retired to rest.
Toland goes further still. A deist in the works he signed, in the anonymous Pantheisticon he maintains that matter is itself capable of generating motion, that materiality and motion are inseparable, that spirit itself is inherent in matter, and that matter unfolds according to its own laws. He could have subscribed to Bruno’s words:
> “The infinity of forms in which matter appears is not received by it from something else and, so to speak, merely externally; rather, it produces them out of itself and gives birth to them from its own womb. It is not that prope nihil which some philosophers have wished to make it, thereby contradicting themselves; it is not that bare, pure, empty capacity without efficacy, perfection, or action. If in itself it has no form, it is not deprived of form as ice is deprived of it by heat or the abyss by light; rather, it resembles a woman in childbirth bringing forth the fruit of her womb.”
The deists, however, do not relinquish God, and even in Toland matter is ‘God-matter.’ Clearly aware of the advantage of preserving religion for disciplining the masses, the deists followed two paths in order to save religion from disintegration. The first was the path of rational reform, of reconciling faith and reason. Locke, for example, maintained that Christianity was wholly rational in essence, that this gold of reason must be separated out and the dross of superstition discarded. Tindal went further: in his view there is only one rational religion, professed by the wise in every age, namely pure deism, the belief that God created a law-governed world, establishing at the same time, immutably and forever, the laws of reason and the laws of conscience.
Just as the enlightened diplomats of integral Catholicism in our own day criticize contemporary Catholic modernists, so far-sighted men such as the brilliant statesman Lord Bolingbroke criticized the deist reformers. With great subtlety this theologian demonstrated that in Christianity, as in all positive religions, what is irrational, even absurd from the standpoint of pure thought, occupies the central place and constitutes its soul. Reason must not touch the truths of faith; otherwise, however cautious it may be, it will destroy them. And, smiling slyly in the direction of his aristocratic friends, the noble lord turned a pious face toward the crowd and solemnly taught: faith is a matter of the heart, and nowhere does it clash with reason; just as sunlight cannot accelerate or retard the movement of masses on earth, or alter the character of sounds, so reason is powerless to influence the mysterious stirrings of the believing soul and the prayer of trust rising to God.
The saviors of the faith in our day attain their highest virtuosity when they combine the methods of Locke and Tindal with those of Bolingbroke.
The most destructive, subtle, and powerful mind of English deism, the great skeptic Hume, that restless child of the chaotic, rapidly changing, insecure capitalist order that was beginning to lay its hand on all of life, several times directed the force of his audacious thought against the concept of God. His criticism of the scholastic proofs of God’s existence is almost as destructive as Kant’s. But, like Kant and like Voltaire, Hume stopped short at the decisive moment. What F. A. Lange says of Voltaire and Kant applies fully to Hume:
> “Voltaire did not wish to be a materialist. Evidently, an undeveloped, unconscious germ of Kant’s fundamental standpoint was fermenting within him when he repeatedly returned to the theme most sharply expressed by the familiar words: ‘If God did not exist, he would have to be invented.’ We postulate God’s existence as the foundation of moral conduct, Kant teaches. Voltaire thinks that if Bayle, who considered an atheist state possible, were given five or six hundred peasants to govern, he would immediately have the doctrine of divine retribution preached to them. This expression can be stripped of its levity, and Voltaire’s actual view will then amount to this: the concept of God is necessary to uphold virtue and justice.”
In our view, precisely what the idealist Lange considers Voltaire’s ‘levity’ possesses real depth and affords a glimpse into the realm of concealed class motives. We do not mean by this that Hume, Kant, and Voltaire were simply being deliberately dishonest, simply lying. No: horror at the senseless, uncontrolled course of life; its glaring insecurity, increasing with the progress of capitalism; profound distrust of the bourgeois individual who was beginning to break his fetters and display his wolfish egoism; fear of the downtrodden masses, who were beginning to shake the edifice of culture resting on the bent shoulders of the starving Atlases of labor: all this aroused in the souls of the bourgeoisie’s foremost ideologists that passionate desire to preserve a fixed and all-restraining pole which compels their present-day epigones to cry out for the same thing ever more fearfully and desperately amid the gathering twilight of bourgeois society. But the river of time is violently carrying away the great idol.
