Political life and its tasks powerfully influenced the philosophizing of the great German idealists. In his youth, Hegel was more or less close to Fichte’s revolutionary disposition, but he quickly changed his way of thinking. A profound mind and a balanced character made him turn contemptuously away from the people of ‘Storm and Stress,’ those exceedingly noble-hearted rebels who threatened to turn the world upside down, discoursed at length about feeling and personality, invoked Rousseau and Fichte, yet were so powerless before the elemental forces of society. Hegel regarded the fussing of the ‘critical personality’ with contempt; he considered it a pitiful renegade from objective spirit, whose creativity manifested itself in the slow progress of the masses.
Hegel mercilessly ridiculed subjective, individualistic idealism. But he did so by no means in the name of conservatism, by no means joining the other romanticism, the aristocratic and royalist conservatism of the de Maistres, the Bonalds, and the Chateaubriands. For Hegel, the spirit manifesting itself in history progresses eternally and in accordance with law. It is equally absurd to try to push it forward with the individual’s feeble powers or to hold it back by any measures whatsoever. Hegel is an objectivist in this sense. Everything that exists thereby proves the necessity and rationality of its existence from the standpoint of spirit’s creativity. But the collapse of what exists is likewise proof of its irrationality and unfitness. This is a justification of history both in its inertia and in its movement, or rather in its organic, gradual ascent. Hegel says:
> ‘World spirit had the patience to pass through these forms over a long period of time and to take upon itself the immense labor of world history, in the course of which it poured into each of these forms all the content of which that form was capable.’
Or, as Engels puts it:
> ‘The place of dying actuality is taken by a new, viable actuality: peacefully if the old is sensible enough to die without resistance, violently if it resists this necessity. Hegelian philosophy showed once and for all how absurd it is to attribute an eternal and immutable significance to any results whatsoever of human thought and action.’
Because of this, Hegel can be invoked equally in defense of the existing order and of revolution. If a conservative and a revolutionary were to argue before Hegel, he would say to them with an enigmatic smile: ‘Whichever of you wins will thereby prove both that he is right and that his convictions and actions are rational.’ Unfortunately, this wisdom is somewhat like the owl of Minerva, which flies out only at night and passes judgment after the fact.
The revolutionaries, including Heine and Engels, nevertheless seem to have greater justification in relying on Hegel: indeed, in the spirit of his philosophy, every order must sooner or later exhaust itself and be replaced by a new one. Yet Hegel himself, contrary to this inexorable historicism of his philosophy, was inclined to see the end of world history in his own system and in the Prussian state order of his day. Engels is right, however, when he locates Hegel’s revolutionary character in his method, the soul of his philosophy, a method that considers each phenomenon in its inseparable and necessary connection with the phenomenon that gave rise to it and the one that develops out of it, while locating his conservatism in his cumbersome and rapidly outdated system.
Hegel’s views on the evolution of nature, while differing from Schelling’s in many particulars, agreed with them in the main. In his encyclopedia he says:
> ‘Nature must be seen as a system of stages, each of which proceeds from another… but not in such a way that one is naturally produced by another; rather, this occurs through the inner idea that forms the basis of nature. Metamorphosis belongs only to the concept as such, since only its application is development… The thinking observer must rid himself of such essentially vague notions as the so-called origin of plants and animals from water, and then the origin of developed animal organisms from lower ones, and the like.’
Thus Hegel too perceived a gradation and a gradual elevation of spirit in nature, but did not allow movement, real progress, here, although one might have expected him to do so.
In history, however, Hegel approaches Fichte and regards it as a gradual ascent toward freedom taking place in time. Only where Fichte has spirit’s constant struggle with the nonspiritual, Hegel has the orderly dialectic of spirit itself, overcoming itself and unfolding from itself.
Let us briefly compare Hegel’s philosophy of history in its principal tenets with the basic principles of the Marx-Engels philosophy of history.
First of all, the evolution of nature is a real process for Marxism, which accepts the modern evolutionism of Darwin, Spencer, and others in the field of natural science; higher stages are actually and really generated by lower ones. The same holds in human history.
For Hegel, unfathomable spirit carries within itself the law of its development, the dialectic of the concept; for Marx, history is the concrete struggle of human groups with nature and with one another. The driving force of history is the struggle of classes, whose way of life, interrelations, and powers are determined by the degree of humanity’s mastery over nature, by changes in its productive forces and, with them, in the modes of production.
If the introduction of the real factor (the methods and instruments of production and their evolution) already considerably changes the character of the philosophy of history, the introduction of the concept of class struggle, or rather the establishment of the existence of this fact, changes the entire character of the worldview still more. Marx, of course, shares Hegel’s objectivism; for him too, a social order grows, falls, and is replaced by a new one because of profound causes that no arbitrary human will can alter. He too ridicules the romantics of revolutionary subjectivism and the romantics of musty conservatism. But for him the new growing within the old, the young forces destined to shatter the worn-out framework, the antithesis, is really embodied in people, namely in the representatives of the class that the objective course of things has prepared for domination. The movement of spirit becomes a real struggle of one human group against another; the objective factor, society’s forward movement, merges with the subjective one, people’s striving actively to move society forward. Only, of course, for Marx the subject of activity is not the ‘hero’ but the class.
Marxism is close to Hegel insofar as Hegel, like Fichte, places the collective above the individual:
> ‘He praised those peoples and those times when human beings devoted themselves entirely to great social ideas that disclosed to them the very kernel of being. In Hellenism and Christianity he saw cultural forms each of which separately exhibited this characteristic. Here the separate individual did not feel himself a member torn away, cut off from the whole; he did not come forward with criticism of the whole, but was inspired by it and lost himself in it.’
But Hegel overlooked the economic antagonism that, in a society founded on private property, fatally produces discord and even the atomization of the collective. Hegel was unaware of this evil and never rose to Fichte’s halfway form of socialism. His philistine, gradualist liberalism prevented him from doing so. Marxism, by contrast, places an infinitely high value on the peace, concord, and harmony of the collective, but only for socialist society; in present-day society, a collectivist world-feeling is possible and desirable only within the proletariat. Here, however, internal concord and discipline are accompanied by intense hostility, by militant hatred toward that part of society which defends what is dying away.
The constructions of the great German idealists occupy an important place in humanity’s cultural development. They focus attention on the fact of progress and attach primary importance to it, so that in the doctrines of Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel we see varieties of a philosophy of progress. All these great philosophers call on the human individual to understand and joyfully accept himself as a link in the majestic development of spirit, or the spiritualization of nature. Setting aside Hegel’s attempts to reconcile his philosophy with a philosophically dissected Christianity, we cannot fail to recognize elevated qualities in his philosophy of religion. He established the fact that religious systems are interconnected and understood them as a ladder of humanity’s knowledge of the world and of itself. What, then, appeared to him as the highest rung of this ladder? Hegel places the consciousness of infinity at the foundation of his religion, but this infinity, outside which nothing finite is conceivable for him, is in no sense a God separate from being: for Hegel, infinity manifests itself only in phenomena finite in both time and space. On the other hand, neither is this a universe governed by immutable mechanical laws, in which spirit is something accidental, almost pathological; no, for Hegel, the feeling and thought we find within ourselves are merely the highest expressions of the infinite, which passes through a long series of degrees of perfection, identical with itself in essence and diverse in form. Above individual feeling and thinking, however, stands cultured human society, creating all the higher forms of social life. The rational connection of the individual with the universal, in which freedom and necessity coincide ever more closely as humanity’s knowledge of the world and its powers increase, is the central fact; the meaning of religion lies in this alone: knowing and feeling this connection and acting in accordance with it. The human and the human-social were thus naturally placed by Hegel above the cosmic. It remained to single out within human society those elements that bore the future and thereby give the whole religious construction a practical-political character. Hegel did not do this. But even that would not have been enough. It would still have remained to discern the connection between political and philosophical development, on the one hand, and the fundamental driving force of human development, the evolution of labor and cooperation, on the other. This too Hegel was unable to do.
Thus, under favorable social conditions, the way beyond Hegel was bound to be a philosophy of practice, a practical conclusion drawn from the acquired consciousness of progress and its value. The advanced bourgeoisie, particularly in the person of Feuerbach, tried to outline this way forward. Feuerbach greatly humanized Hegel’s religious philosophy, but he was not able to introduce the two most important practical elements: recognition of the proletarian class as the bearer of the highest form of society, and recognition of the economic basis of culture in labor. This was done by the great thinkers of the proletariat, which became the heir of idealist philosophy.
> ‘It goes without saying that correct and practical conclusions compelled them to reconsider the premises as well, and to put Hegel on his feet instead of his head. Only this brought the matter closer to the genuine unity of the universe, which Hegel had not achieved, for in his philosophy, despite all his efforts, as Feuerbach rightly observed, a shadow of actuality hovers above the concrete world: namely, the idea unfolding from itself according to a plan.’
Here an important question arises before us: in what sense is scientific socialism the heir of the religious philosophy of Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel? Merely insofar as it succeeds that philosophy? Insofar as it adopts the concept of progress that this philosophy shares with all evolutionists? Or did scientific socialism also adopt, all too tacitly, unfortunately, certain elements of the great idealists’ disposition, their world-feeling?
We prefer to examine this important question in detail after expounding Feuerbach’s religious-philosophical views in connection with Engels’s criticism of them. It will then be clear to us how the transition from idealism of the old type to ‘dialectical materialism’ took place.
But in our eyes Feuerbach is already a synthesizer. In his doctrine, certain principles of Hegelianism merged with tendencies of a materialist character. We must therefore return to the materialists of eighteenth-century France, to whom Engels attached no less importance as predecessors than to the idealists of Germany.
If Spinozism was the synthetic religious philosophy closest to the extreme represented by the idealists, English deism played the same role in relation to the flourishing materialism of the eighteenth century.
