(8) That is, until you have learned that true being is often bound up with death, you are only a tedious guest upon the dark earth.

(9) As he had done before, but irresolutely, that is, on the defensive and as though sheltering behind royal power.

(10) See also my study ‘Henrik Ibsen and Philistinism’, in Education, 1907, and my article ‘Philistinism and Individualism’ in the collection Essays on the Philosophy of Collectivism (note of 1909). Both these articles have appeared in the recently published collection Philistinism and Individualism (note of 1924).

(12) I have republished these remarkable pages by Marx, with my commentaries, in the collection Against Idealism, which appeared this year. (Note of 1924.)

(13) The mistake of the later idealists was that they presented the development of ‘spirit’, that is, simply, consciousness and conscious will, as absolutely free and independent of ‘nonspiritual’ principles, that is, matter. In fact, ‘free spirit’ initially develops almost entirely spontaneously, driven by necessities lying outside it, and thought gradually acquires an organizing character, preparing Engels’s ‘leap from the realm of necessity into the realm of freedom’.

(14) ‘The Course of Development of Kantian Ethics’.

(17) ‘In fact, however, Schelling did not attain monism. He actually remained with the polarity of the world, God, in which there prove to be two elements: inertia and activity, or, equivalently, spirit and matter’ (note of 1924).

(19) It would be very good if Comrade Sarabyanov would take this to heart. He would then have no need to attack my supposedly incorrect idea that every idealism is dualistic.
