Dietzgen

We have already seen that Engels’s definition of materialism fully encompasses all varieties of critical realism and includes Plekhanov’s Holbachian materialism as a particular case.

Dietzgen’s independent achievement was to emphasize, with particular vividness and in a readily graspable form, the enormous breadth of the new materialism compared with the old mechanical atomism.

Engels writes:

> ‘It is remarkable that we were not the only ones to rediscover materialist dialectics, which for many years was our best instrument of labor and our strongest weapon: the German worker Joseph Dietzgen discovered it independently of us and even independently of Hegel.’

Engels could not have been unaware of Dietzgen’s definitions and thus indirectly approved them. Here is how Dietzgen defines materialism:

> ‘By “matter”, socialist materialism understands not only what has weight and can be touched, but everything real, everything contained in the universe; and everything is indeed contained in it, for everything and the universe are merely two names for the same thing. Socialist materialism seeks to encompass everything within one concept, one word, one class, regardless of whether this universal class is called actuality, reality, or matter.’

And elsewhere:

> ‘If the generalizing word “matter” troubles anyone, let him say “phenomenon” instead. A corporeal, physical, sensuous, material phenomenon is the name for the general category to which all existence belongs, the ponderable and the imponderable, bodies and spirit.’ > > ‘We physically feel within ourselves the presence of the thinking mind, and in exactly the same way, through the same sense, we perceive outside ourselves stones, clay, the sky, and bushes. And there is little difference between what we perceive within ourselves and what we perceive outside ourselves. Both belong to sensuous phenomena, to empirical material.’

But Dietzgen’s attitude to that ‘All’ or Universe which he places at the foundation of his philosophy is not without aspects that bring him closer to Spinoza than to Marx. Starting from Feuerbach’s philosophy, Marx brilliantly developed a philosophy of human practice, all-embracing and integral. Dietzgen, by contrast, seems to seek to unfold Feuerbach’s conception of nature. Despite all his qualifications, the primacy of the universe over man, as of the whole over the part, is beyond doubt in his thought. The feeling of merging with the universe is no less strong in Dietzgen than, for example, in Schleiermacher.

Dietzgen is a universalist with his whole soul, and it is doubtful whether his thoroughly religious attitude toward the ‘whole’ can blend entirely harmoniously with Marx’s spirit.

It is not difficult to prove the presence of a distinctive religious element in Dietzgen’s universalism, since he essentially makes no attempt to conceal it. Let us give a few quotations, if only from his ‘Letters on Logic’:

> ‘To establish the universal meaning, you must work toward the knowledge that the universe contains within itself everything relative, while in the whole is embodied the absolute or edifying deity’… > > ‘Every difference possesses one essence, universal, supremely exalted, all-encompassing, absolute, divine, and this absolute world-essence is edifying in the highest degree, for it contains all other essences and is the alpha and omega of all things. But does this world-god not amount to a bare concept? No, it is truth and life! And it is extremely interesting to note the fact that the so-called “ontological proof of the existence of God” fully applies to the world-truth which I permit myself to place upon the tabernacle of logic. Originally this proof was attributed to Anselm of Canterbury. Be that as it may, one thing is known: Descartes and Spinoza are the chief defenders of this proof. They argued that “existence necessarily belongs to the most perfect essence, for otherwise it could not be the most perfect essence”… > > “This argument is as clear to me as sunlight, and should fully convince you not of the existence of absolute, overblown idols, but of the truth of the absolutely perfect world-being”… > > “The absolute concept is the concept of the absolute or the highest; associated with the latter is not only the true, the beautiful, and the good that are attributed to God: it is also the essence that gives all thought its necessary logic, solidity, and true form”… > > “The good” is precisely not any special institution, but must be sought in the universal interconnection of the whole world. Only the absolute, indeed, is absolutely good’… > > ‘You must nevertheless recognize the world-spirit not as a monster, a miraculous spirit, but as the corporeal universe, which, despite all its changes and transformations, is eternally one, true, good, rational, supremely real, and highest.’

For Marx all the ‘accursed questions’ find their resolution in revolutionary practice and in it alone. He seeks no answer in any grand interpretation of the universe. To say nothing of a transcendent deity, he is by no means inclined to recognize the immanent divinity of the world, a position to which Dietzgen comes very close. Quietism lurks at the bottom of every pantheism. Every pantheism accepts the world as finished. We know very well that there are magnificent and profound evolutionary-pantheist conceptions. They have been reawakening with great force lately. Unable in this book to undertake a critical analysis of the remarkable works of Bergson (L’évolution créatrice) and William Stern (Person und Sache), we can only say that they nevertheless remain far behind scientific-socialist materialism. This is so not only in the logical sense, but also in that pragmatic sense so especially dear to the authors we have mentioned, who are undoubtedly close spiritual kin to pragmatism.

Indeed, evolutionary pantheism has to be conceived as development from amorphous matter toward the complete triumph of form, toward freedom and spirituality. The divine here appears as a world-soul gradually taking possession of its amorphous body. In James, Giran, and other pure pragmatists, the dualism involved is obvious: they stand on the boundary between pantheism and deism. Evolution proceeds according to the plan of a conscious deity, which works through the forces of the world, including through us. We are thus participants in the divine company, something like living pawns in a game of God and the devil whose overall plan is beyond our grasp, while James and his school insist on the necessity of believing in God’s victory. It is assumed that such a position must enormously strengthen our energy. This worldview can serve as an excellent support for liberalism: one must keep in step with events, try as best one can to understand one’s mission, the will of the one who sent one, while to the cries of the victims and the shouts of the impatient one may reply: ‘We are not to blame for the agonizing slowness of progress; it is sacred and rational, it is the will of God, who makes no mistakes!’ Naturally, some of our Cadets tried to ‘create’ a liberal mysticism of this sort, Sergei Trubetskoy, for example.

More resolute are those pantheists of our time who do not accept any divine soul apart from the forces immanent in the world. For them, the world is not a gradual transformation into God. But it must be one thing or the other: either the collective of all humanity, which is becoming organized before our eyes, is the highest manifestation within our field of vision of the world’s tendency toward harmony, while all the remaining forces of nature represent stages already passed through and have meaning only as the material of the maturing, conscious constructive activity of all humanity; or human will in this latter sense is not the summit of development already attained, but only a part of the universal concert of the world, a part infinitely smaller than the whole. The first conception is confirmed by all our experience; it postulates no unprovable good and leaves the world in tragic half-darkness, for humanity, this vanguard of pioneers, proves to be left to its own powers and understanding, with nothing guaranteeing its success: such is Marx’s conception. The second conception postulates a highly organized divine will surpassing the reason of all humanity, something unprovable and very precarious; it provides a greater guarantee, albeit an imaginary one, and assigns man a smaller and less responsible role. As we have seen, Dietzgen inclines toward this.

Judge for yourselves: which of the two conceptions is more capable of arousing energy?

Here we think it appropriate to touch on one exceptionally important aspect of the matter. We have already pointed out in passing a certain resemblance between the psyches of Dietzgen and Schleiermacher. In both there is a strong, living religious need: to feel deeply and ardently their oneness with the universe.

Whereas Spinoza, by nature more of a rationalist, gave his love for God-nature a purely intellectual character, Schleiermacher introduced into the feeling of unity with the cosmos, which he regarded as the soul of every religion, much genuine Romanticism, emotional excitement, almost passion. And when reading the eloquent pages Dietzgen devoted to the universe, one cannot help recalling the fervent tirades of pantheists and mystics.

This human need to find happiness in the consciousness of being part of a great whole, this striving to raise and enrich one’s life through an experience of a wholly special kind, in which the boundaries of personality collapse, vital energy seems to overflow the bodily vessel, and the great power of an element intimately akin to oneself and boundlessly loved flows into the heart, this need, which has always played an enormous role in religious emotional life, is entirely legitimate and fruitful, and is destined to develop.

The isolated human individual is joyless. He is a part, and without a corresponding whole he has no meaning. But where is this whole for which the individual, limited in space and time, yearns so sorrowfully? Is it God? But God was created precisely so that this need might seem immediately satisfied, so that everything existing could be conceived as more or less akin to us, as something, to use Guyau’s profound expression, sociomorphic. The more distorted the human social order, distorted by domination, hostility, and fragmentation, the more monstrous is the world of gods through which man idealizes the universe and draws it closer to himself. God the Father, whose sons we are on equal terms, corresponds to the ideal of a just and democratic empire; God the Universe, whose parts we can joyfully feel ourselves to be, corresponds to the ideal of a just republic. But all these are merely illusory projections of human society onto nature, which thereby acquires the deceptive appearance of a society more ideal than the human one. Yet the time of realism arrives, everything is put in its proper place, and the highest thing in nature proves to be human society itself, of course in its development and its potentialities. Does it follow that the need we have been discussing must henceforth remain unsatisfied? By no means; on the contrary, in this respect the entire religious past was merely an instinctive search for what has now almost been found, outside the bounds of any religion whatsoever.

The ties connecting the soul of the modern, collectivistically minded individual with humanity are manifold. There is the feeling for the species and for history, which enables us to regard ourselves as a living link in the unfolding drama of life, so rich in colors, so stunningly magnificent, so agonizingly majestic. There is the feeling of solidarity, which makes us kin to the people not only in their heart-rending martyrdom, but above all in their bright and courageous awakening, in their struggle, whose bearer is the proletariat. There is the feeling of joy in growth that seizes us at the sight of new achievements in science, technology, and social tactics, for all these are like unfinished melodies and barely sketched harmonies, or the beginnings and scattered parts of beautiful buildings slowly taking shape out of a chaos of materials; and all that is growing and coming together already gives us, in a distinctive reverie, a fore-echo of the majestic music of the future. Those who themselves contribute to the construction, however slightly, are many times more sensitive to the full breadth of the emerging song of the culture to come. Solidarity, it seems to me, when it is courageous and healthy, is incomparably more a sharing in the joy of growth than a sharing in suffering. I do not thereby deny compassion, because suffering cannot be denied. While I do not believe the symphony of life to be fated to be written in a minor key, neither do I suppose that it could ever flow forth boundlessly and forever in a cloudlessly radiant C major.

Is it not surprising that, when seeking a vivid illustration of the ‘social emotion’ of our day, one has to turn to the ultra-individualist Nietzsche and to Gorky, who was himself an ultra-individualist so recently? Truly, we observe here a passage into the opposite, explained to us by Guyau’s law of the transition from an extreme degree of individual intensity of life to its social intensity. I know of no page that characterizes the emerging historical feeling more vividly than the brilliant passage from The Joyful Science which I have quoted more than once. It must be reproduced here too:

> ‘When I look at our century through the refined eyes of the future, the most remarkable thing I see in contemporary humanity is something young and great called the “historical sense”. This is the beginning of something new and unprecedented in history: if this seed is allowed to develop for several centuries, it may grow into a marvelous plant with a fragrance so intoxicating and strange that life on earth will become much better. We modern people are beginning to forge the chain of a new, powerful feeling, link by link, scarcely conscious of what we are doing. It sometimes seems to us that what is taking place is not the formation of a new feeling at all, but the atrophy of old ones: the historical sense is still so poor and cold that it affects some people like a chill, making them colder and poorer than they were. To others it appears a sign of approaching old age: our planet seems to them a gravely ill person writing the history of his youth in order to forget his present. Indeed, there is this shade in the new feeling too: whoever can feel the whole of humanity’s past as his own past feels the terrible sum of the bitterness of the sick over their lost health, of old people recalling their youthful dreams, of lovers deprived of their beloved, of martyrs who died for their ideas, of heroes on the evening of a battle that decided nothing but cost wounds and the loss of friends. To comprehend the monstrous weight of this varied bitterness, to be strong enough to bear it and remain a hero greeting the dawn and his own happiness with the beginning of a new day of battle, to be a person with a horizon of millennia behind and before him, to be the heir of all the nobility of departed spirit, the responsible heir to the noblest of ancient lineages, to absorb into one’s soul all humanity’s ancient and new disappointment, hopes, conquests, and victories, to contain all this in one soul, in one feeling: this is a happiness hitherto unknown to man, the happiness of a god full of strength and love, full of tears and laughter, a god who, like the evening sun, gives continually from his inexhaustible treasury and, casting gold into the sea, does not feel rich until even the poorest fisherman rows with golden oars! And this divine feeling is called humanity!’

And surges of love for the distant, radiant great-grandchild have been portrayed most powerfully by those same ultra-individualists, either having arrived at socialism or being close to such a transition. I mean Verhaeren, Dehmel, and Scharf. It would be a great service to collect and publish an anthology of such poetry of the future.

Humanity has the greatest possible interest in developing and strengthening this feeling. For the great struggle for life and power which life itself is, humanity must merge almost organically into an integral unity. The living connection of cells within an organism can be achieved in the social superorganism only by psychological means. The individual is far more complex and independent than a cell; the social superorganism is a synthesis incomparably subtler than the organism, and its ultimate purposes are achieved not through the complete subordination of its elements and their transformation into specialized instruments, but through the many-sided development of all their powers, with a free and flexible choice of their particular application. The organism negates the individuality of its elements; the superorganism presupposes and strengthens it. Neither a mechanical or chemical bond nor the bond of unconscious instinct will weld people into humanity, but a psychological, consciously emotional bond. This bond is the feeling of which we speak, and if we supplement it with practical idealism, that is, the striving to subject the laws of nature to the laws of life through knowledge and labor, we shall have an integral, objective worldview in its full stature, in its genuine, undistorted beauty.

The great figures of the French Revolution and the French revolutionary masses understood this perfectly. I shall give several relevant quotations from Julien Tiersot’s book Music and Festivities in the Age of the Great French Revolution.

> ‘Never has the popular imagination unfolded so widely. Revolutionary mise-en-scène sometimes arises from the inspiration of the masses, sometimes it is deliberately organized, but it is always extraordinary and filled with powerful vitality… On these occasions the people are no longer an abstraction; they are a living and active being, their thousands of voices merge, their thousands of hearts beat together, they are wholly seized by one feeling, one passion, lofty, ardent, and sincere… Every event of any significance was consecrated by popular demonstrations organized so as to impress it deeply upon consciousness.’

Tiersot gives its due place to the festival, that fundamental pillar of democratic aesthetics and at the same time a support of collective feeling; and the soul of these festivals is the art that is most collective, music.

> ‘Music is the only art that simultaneously fulfills both purposes pursued by popular festivals: it lends them outward splendor and expresses intimate feeling. The resonant and triumphant song of trumpets, stirring marches, majestic or joyful songs lend the festivals movement, brilliance, and life. But now the ceremony assumes a lofty character, souls merge in a single thought, striving to rise toward an ideal that may be obscure and unattainable; music then soars above everyone, expressing the shared feeling, formulating in its commanding chords the universal aspiration that lives in every heart.’

This book is appearing in years that have far surpassed the French Revolution in the scope of collective will. Whatever may be said about the excessively intellectualist tendency of our revolution, in its conscious manifestations it is full of ardent feeling as an element of that same Marxism which, as a doctrine, is unquestionably its dominant force. Yet enemies or outsiders sometimes still accuse Marxism of dryness and coldness. This book seeks to offer an outline of Marxism as an integral world-feeling. It seeks to make the reader feel the unsurpassed depth and richness of the emotions that naturally animate the consciousness of an active Marxist. For this purpose I have used chapters from an old work of mine, correcting them in certain places, and I have done so precisely because I consider these pages wholly contemporary. It is very possible that they will encounter more or less bitter criticism, but in the end the relative value of this approach too will be understood.
