General Characteristics
The philosophy of the modern age consists not merely of speculation on themes supplied by the positive religion of one church or another, to which philosophy in the Middle Ages was almost entirely reduced, but of a genuine search for a new worldview, the creation of new philosophical systems. Most of the great philosophers of the seventeenth, eighteenth, and early nineteenth centuries admittedly did not reject Christianity, but supposedly sought only to interpret it anew; yet these interpretations could hardly have benefited Christianity, and what we see here is rather something resembling the ‘double bookkeeping’ of freethinking scholastics. The philosophical teachings of Spinoza, Leibniz, Kant, Fichte, and Hegel were new philosophical systems; the teachings of Holbach, Diderot, and Feuerbach were new integral worldviews that categorically rejected all religiosity. Marxism, as a philosophy, is the latest system, profoundly critical and at the same time synthetic.
Formally, the difference between the old positive religions and philosophical systems of the same type lies above all in the fact that the old religions put forward revelation, a mysterious, irrational dogma, as their foundation, established in the clergy a class of intermediaries between God and human beings, and sought to create a rigid and hierarchically organized church. The philosophical systems of the modern age, by contrast, acknowledge themselves to be the fruit of the efforts of human reason; this alone cuts away the ground from dogmatic pretensions. Worldviews are cleansed of the superstition of divine self-revelation, which stifled all criticism. God was no longer the author of books. Everything in the new systems is human; everything is open to criticism. In its inner content, the succession of philosophical systems constitutes a gradual purification of the human worldview and world-feeling of mystical and metaphysical elements. The question of the individual, the species, and the cosmos, of life and the elemental forces, is placed on an increasingly real foundation. God diminishes; first the world and then the human being grows at his expense. The sense of human freedom shines through ever more brightly; the causes of human enslavement are understood ever more clearly. Dependence on phantoms ceases, and dependence on nature and on the instruments of production that impose a tormenting social order on human beings gradually diminishes. A growing belief in progress and a sense of the value of progress as such are also important characteristic features of the new philosophy.
No religion, however fantastic and mystical, can detach itself from economics. This is true not only in the sense that it is the offspring of a given economic way of life, of given internally contradictory conditions and relationships, but also in the sense that its entire system of promise, expectation, and evaluation is bound up precisely with economics. Religions address questions of justice and happiness, regression and progress, and all these are ultimately economic terms. The meaning of justice reduces entirely to the question of the distribution among human beings of life’s burdens and pleasures, of the expenditure of living energy and its replenishment and enrichment. However subtly happiness is interpreted, it always has a purely economic meaning, since in its very essence it is a definite physiological state of the organism’s highest satisfaction. And the very type of happiness, the question being which particular systems of the organism are accorded the greatest importance in their growth or equilibrium, bears the indelible stamp of belonging to one class or another, that is, of occupying one position or another in the process of production. The golden age or paradise, whether ahead of us or behind us, is an economic ideal. Its character and its location are determined by economic conditions, while it invariably consists in some picture of well-being. The economic character of paradise is not diminished when, instead of, for example, the paradise of a hunter who always finds an abundance of game, it becomes the paradise of a parasite who supposes that there will be no need even to eat, but only to enjoy endless bliss in the languor of sweet contemplation of the master.
Modern philosophy, insofar as it constructs an integral worldview, likewise constitutes a philosophy of human economics.
What, then, is the fundamental fact that impelled human thought onto the path of a new philosophical search for a worldview and was reflected in it?
That fact is the growth of handicraft and manufacturing techniques, the expansion of trade, and the growth of towns and their importance at the expense of the village and the castle.
Even at the highest stages of its development, agricultural technology left human beings dependent on the heavens. And not merely on the heavens of calculable regularity, the astronomical heavens already studied by the Chaldeans, which so greatly influenced the form of the great religions of ancient civilizations, but also on the meteorological heavens, whose storms and frosts, downpours and fair weather seem sheer whims of an invisible will. Diseases of crops, locusts, and similar calamities also seem impossible to reckon with. There was consequently no basis here for determinism, and hence for assured mastery over phenomena. The regularity of the starry and planetary heavens suggested a world of immutable laws. This world even became an ideal or a desired place of repose, especially for the classes establishing social order and the immutability of the law of the state. But poor earth, the earth of purely human, economic relationships, remained a vale of disorder. The natural way out of the antinomy between acknowledging beneficent deities and the existence of evil in nature was to regard natural evil as punishment for social evil, for departures from the laws of the state, morality, and religion, for human sins.
But the urban middle class came to the fore with the growth of handicraft techniques, and things began to change, especially as the field of application of mechanisms and precisely predictable chemical processes expanded. The regularity inherent in the stars and in ideas, in the domain of mathematics and pure logic or the old dialectic, gradually proved equally strictly inherent in the earth’s mechanical and chemical phenomena, once these had been sufficiently analysed. This discovery astonished the minds of the first great empiricists. Divine law proved to reign unwaveringly in the sublunary world as well: not the capricious, changeable will of a deity, but the eternally unitary law of a God always and everywhere identical with himself.
For the great Leonardo da Vinci, necessity and the will of God are one and the same. He writes veritable prayers to the ‘Prime Mover’; the regularity he discovers everywhere is perceived by him as something sacred and at the same time beautiful. A powerful aesthetic feeling, scientific and artistic in character, consoles him amid the disadvantages of personal life and the ugliness of social life.
> ‘O surpassing magnificence of the things created by God,’ he exclaims, ‘how can I praise you, how express your nobility? What genius, what tongue will describe your processes, O eye, the human window through which the soul delights in the beauty of the world and finds consolation in its bondage? Without that beauty its bondage would be nothing but torment!’
Social life remained a torment and a riddle, while nature shone with a new beauty. The heavenly and the earthly merged mystically. And as navigators and bold merchants embraced the earth in their journeys, they gave an indirect impetus to the great discoveries of Copernicus and Kepler, which embraced the world. The earth finally took up residence in the heavens; the heavens ceased to be alien and became filled with earthlike bodies and, in Bruno, with humanlike beings. Bruno’s majestic cosmic vision opened not only infinite horizons in space and time, but also the primordial unity of the entire infinity of the universe.
A new confidence in the law-governed character of everything that exists, never before manifested so vividly, opened the possibility of unprecedented power over nature. God receded into the immeasurable distance; there remained only nature, bound by necessity, and the human being, capable of knowing and combining phenomena. ‘Having understood the causal connection of natural phenomena in all its necessity, man will build upon this foundation the edifice of his well-being and power,’ wrote Bacon of Verulam. The new technology made it possible, and then passionately desirable, to solve the task of ‘knowing nature as a necessary, law-governed interconnection of phenomena.’
And the human being? Is he not also part of nature? If nature is a great mechanism, is he not part of this mechanism, subject to the same regularity? Thought was bound to reach this conclusion and encounter resistance along the way. The obstacles were of two kinds. First, human beings did not feel themselves to be automata. Descartes, the typical philosopher of the awakening and strengthening self-consciousness of urban manufacturing society, proceeding from mathematics and mechanics and pursuing the fundamental task of the age dictated by economic requirements, that of understanding nature as a mechanism, declared all living creatures to be automata. Yet in his theory of knowledge the same philosopher took as his starting point the immediate fact of self-awareness, the thought cogito ergo sum. The subjective standpoint could only be spiritualistic; the objective one could only be mechanical. The human being united within himself spirit, absolutely unlike anything else, a vivid, independent primordial fact, consciousness, and a material machine. Hence the fatal dualism. It seemed absurd to acknowledge the human being as an automaton: instead of explaining anything, this introduced confusion and made one dizzy with its manifest absurdity and contradiction of living everyday experience.
We must remember, however, that the economic task, the task of increasing human power and wealth, is not reducible to productive technology alone, but is intimately connected with questions of politics and conduct. It is enough to name Machiavelli, Grotius, Vico, and Hobbes to show how intensely thought was working in this domain. But to solve the great problems of the social order, one had to take human beings as living experience presented them, to speak of their good and bad inclinations, of their psychology. How far would Machiavelli have got if he had replaced his psychological standpoint, his profound knowledge of the human ‘soul,’ with that of materialistic automatism? Even in our own time, extending a purely physiological standpoint throughout sociology is a comically thankless undertaking. Recall works such as the sociology of former governor Lilienfeld.[1](#note-1)
Thus experience was split not merely by the continuing struggle between Catholic tradition and the findings of the new science, but by its own objective duality. How could it have been otherwise? Astronomy, mechanics, and chemistry were already beginning to subordinate the apparent contingency of existence to the idea of mathematically expressed lawfulness. This testified to the breaking dawn of capitalism with its mechanical productive power; it meant that humanity was setting a firm foot on the path of knowledge and labour, leaving behind the path of myth and magic. Yet capitalism did not, and could not, bring with it a clear and unified order of cooperation. The forces it had nurtured, the methods of the new, modern, scientifically equipped industry, were still to become humanity’s most terrible tyrants. In place of the somewhat retreating elemental forces of nature came the elemental forces of a fragmented, anarchic social life. The time had not yet come to master the social element by reason. Attempts to force humanity and society into the framework of the new mechanical worldview foundered, sometimes provoking a reaction in the form of a return to Catholic or generally semi-Christian mysticism. The opposite attempts, to create a unified worldview of the idealistic type, offended the realistic, soberly practical spirit of the manufacturing and trading man who set the tone. Nevertheless, both kinds of attempt recur, as do attempts at synthesis.
We shall pause briefly at only two attempts of a synthetic kind that are important to us: Spinoza’s pantheism and seventeenth-century English deism. We shall then proceed to analyse the religious and philosophical thought of the great idealists and the great materialists of the eighteenth century, who contributed in almost equal measure to the subsequent emergence of the greatest synthetic system the world had seen: the system of scientific socialism.
Spinoza and the Spinozists will naturally lead us to the German idealists; the exposition of deism will serve as an introduction to French materialism.
