Outside the walls they stand and wait,at the junctions and the crossroads.Returning to their former homesthey wait beside the door posts.

But when lavish food and drinkof many kinds is set out,no one remembers them at all, because of those beings’s deeds.

Pahūte annapānamhi,khajjabhojje upaṭṭhite;Na tesaṁ koci sarati,sattānaṁ kammapaccayā.

That’s why those who have compassiongive to their relativesfood and drink at the right time, that’s clean, delicious, and suitable.

Evaṁ dadanti ñātīnaṁ,ye honti anukampakā;Suciṁ paṇītaṁ kālena, kappiyaṁ pānabhojanaṁ.

“May this be for our relatives!May our relatives be happy!”Those ghosts who have gathered there, the departed relatives who have come

Pahūte annapānamhi, sakkaccaṁ anumodare;Ciraṁ jīvantu no ñātī,yesaṁ hetu labhāmase.

who have given honor to us,it will not be fruitless for the donor.”There is no farming there,no cow pasture can be found;

Amhākañca katā pūjā,dāyakā ca anipphalā;Na hi tattha kasī atthi, gorakkhettha na vijjati.

likewise there’s no trading, and no commerce in gold coin. The departed, the dead in that placelive on what is given here.

Vaṇijjā tādisī natthi, hiraññena kayākayaṁ;Ito dinnena yāpenti, petā kālagatā tahiṁ.

Just as water that rains on highflows down to the plains,so too what is given hereaids the departed ghosts.

Unname udakaṁ vuṭṭhaṁ,yathā ninnaṁ pavattati;Evamevaṁ ito dinnaṁ,petānaṁ upakappati.

Just as the rivers fullswell the ocean seasso too what is given hereaids the departed ghosts.

Yathā vārivahā pūrā,paripūrenti sāgaraṁ;Evamevaṁ ito dinnaṁ,petānaṁ upakappati.

Thinking: “They gave to me, they did for me,they were my family, friend, comrade”,give offerings to departed kin, remembering past deeds.

Adāsi me akāsi me,ñāti mittā sakhā ca me;Petānaṁ dakkhiṇaṁ dajjā,pubbe katamanussaraṁ.

For neither tears nor griefor other lamentationsare of any use to the departed,so long as their relatives stay like this.

Na hi ruṇṇaṁ vā soko vā,yā caññā paridevanā;Na taṁ petānamatthāya,evaṁ tiṭṭhanti ñātayo.

The relative’s duty has now been shown:how high honor to departed is performed, how the mendicants can be kept strong, and how no little merit is produced by you.

Kp 8 · A Treasure Trove

Kp 8 · Nidhikaṇḍasutta

A person stores away their savingsin a deep trove by the water’s edge:“When need arisesit will be there to help

Nidhiṁ nidheti puriso, gambhīre odakantike;Atthe kicce samuppanne, atthāya me bhavissati.

free me from rulers if I am slandered,or from bandits if harassed,or to release me from debt,or in case of famine or losses.”What the world calls savingsget stored away for such reasons.

Rājato vā duruttassa,corato pīḷitassa vā;Iṇassa vā pamokkhāya,dubbhikkhe āpadāsu vā;Etadatthāya lokasmiṁ,nidhi nāma nidhīyati.

But no matter how well stored away they arein a deep pit by the water’s edge, all their savings will failto aid them all the time.

Tāvassunihito santo, gambhīre odakantike;Na sabbo sabbadā eva, tassa taṁ upakappati.

For perhaps those savings shift from there,or they forget what marks the site,or dragons make off with them,or spirits carry them away,

Nidhi vā ṭhānā cavati,saññā vāssa vimuyhati;Nāgā vā apanāmenti, yakkhā vāpi haranti naṁ.

or unloved heirssecretly unearth them. When their merit is used up,all of that will vanish.

Appiyā vāpi dāyādā,uddharanti apassato;Yadā puññakkhayo hoti,sabbametaṁ vinassati.

But by giving and morality, restraint and self-control,a woman or mankeeps their savings safe.

Yassa dānena sīlena,saṁyamena damena ca;Nidhī sunihito hoti, itthiyā purisassa vā.

At a shrine or with the Saṅgha, with mother or father,or else an elder sibling,

Cetiyamhi ca saṅghe vā,puggale atithīsu vā;Mātari pitari cāpi,atho jeṭṭhamhi bhātari.

those savings are kept safe, they stay with you, undecaying. We must go on leaving all behind, only this you take when you go.

Eso nidhi sunihito,ajeyyo anugāmiko;Pahāya gamanīyesu,etaṁ ādāya gacchati.

You don’t have to share it with others,no thief makes off with your savings. An attentive one would make merit, the savings that stay with you.

Asādhāraṇamaññesaṁ,acorāharaṇo nidhi;Kayirātha dhīro puññāni,yo nidhi anugāmiko.

Such savings grant every desireof gods and humans too.Whatever it is that they wish forthrough this they have it all.

Esa devamanussānaṁ,sabbakāmadado nidhi;Yaṁ yadevābhipatthenti,sabbametena labbhati.

Good looks, a sweet voice,a good shape, and good appearance, leadership and followers:through this they have it all.

Suvaṇṇatā susaratā,susaṇṭhānā surūpatā;Ādhipaccaparivāro,sabbametena labbhati.

Sovereignty of a local kingdom, the happiness of a Wheel-Turning Monarch, even kingship in the heavens:through this they have it all.

Padesarajjaṁ issariyaṁ,cakkavattisukhaṁ piyaṁ;Devarajjampi dibbesu,sabbametena labbhati.

Human success, heavenly delight, attaining extinguishment:through this they have it all.

Mānussikā ca sampatti, devaloke ca yā rati;Yā ca nibbānasampatti, sabbametena labbhati.

Relying on having good friends, rational application of effort, mastery of knowledge and freedom:through this they have it all.

Mittasampadamāgamma,yonisova payuñjato;Vijjāvimuttivasībhāvo,sabbametena labbhati.

Analytical knowledge, the liberations, the perfections of the disciple, the plane of an independent Buddha:through this they have it all.

Paṭisambhidā vimokkhā ca,yā ca sāvakapāramī;Paccekabodhi buddhabhūmi,sabbametena labbhati.

This accomplishment in meritis so very beneficial. That’s why the attentive and the astutepraise the making of merit.

Evaṁ mahatthikā esā,yadidaṁ puññasampadā;Tasmā dhīrā pasaṁsanti,paṇḍitā katapuññatanti.

Nidhikaṇḍasuttaṁ.
