Uniting in himself the virtues of the sages and saints who preceded him, Confucius, in the words of Mencius, was more capable than any of them of adapting himself to every circumstance. It was precisely such a man that was called to accomplish the necessary compromise between the abstract principle of Chineseness and the practical needs of the national life. His task consisted in restoring the national antiquity in a new, broader, more harmonious and more enlightened form. Ancient religion and the new social and political life he brought into one system of moral and practical order, traditional and conservative in essence, rational in form. To the Chinese cult of the past he imparted a more moral and more reasoned character, establishing it upon the fundamental virtue of filial piety, and this same moral principle he made the cornerstone of the whole social and political structure of the Chinese empire.

Although Confucius was a thoroughly typical Chinaman and acted in a purely Chinese spirit, his work could not but meet with resistance. It came from three sides. In the first place, against the Confucian compromise stood the strict "ideologists" of Chineseness, and above all the great Lao-tzu himself. Confucius was his younger contemporary and once journeyed to him to pay him homage. The old mystic treated the practical philosopher rather contemptuously and declared his whole activity to be completely barren, while Confucius modestly confessed that for him the preacher of absolute indistinction was like a dragon which it is impossible to overtake. Of another kind were the opponents Confucius was bound to encounter in the person of simple folk, supporters of the unconditional status quo, adherents of every particular and accidental tradition and superstition. For them Confucius, for all his conservatism and old-faith devotion, was nevertheless a reformer and an innovator, for in bringing the ancient tradition into order and making of it a rational system, he thereby modified it. Finally, against Confucius there rose up the representatives of state despotism, who were unwilling to subject their arbitrary will to the requirements of the moral order. During his lifetime Confucius wandered without success from one appanage court to another, finding sympathy nowhere, and 250 years after his death the emperor Ch'in-shih-huang-ti ordered the chief Confucian books to be burnt and put to death as many as 400 learned followers of Confucius. After this trial, with the accession of a new dynasty, Confucianism became the state religion and philosophy of China, and this significance remains with it to the present day.

As a typical Chinese man, Confucius is first of all an admirer of antiquity. "The sage said: I interpret, I explain the ancient books, and do not compose new ones. I believe the ancients and love them". "I was not born a scholar, but I loved the ancients and employed every effort to acquire their knowledge". "My way of teaching is very simple: I adduce examples of the conduct of the ancients, I recommend the reading of the chings (the sacred books) and I require that my disciples should accustom themselves to reflect upon the instructions read out of the chings." – "I require," says Confucius in another place, "only that which ought to be required of men. My teaching is nothing other than the teaching which the ancients delivered and left to us; to this teaching I add nothing and take nothing away from it, but transmit it in its original purity. This teaching is unchanging, – Heaven itself is its author." – One day Confucius was walking along the bank of a river and from time to time stopped to look at how the water flows. When he was asked what he found curious in the flow of the river, he answered: "The flow of water in a channel natural or dug by the hands of man is a very simple thing, and everyone knows its grounds; but what no one knows is the analogies between flowing water and the ancient scholar. The waters of the river flow without stopping, flow day and night, until they reach the spacious sea, – and the holy teaching of Yao and Shun (the ancient sovereigns) flowed without stopping down to us; let us then further its flow and hand it on to our descendants, who in their turn will hand it on to their descendants, and so to the end of the ages."

In the ancient teaching Confucius did not find that idea of absolute indistinction to which Lao-tzu had thought his way and in which he had immersed himself. The starting point of the Confucian world-view is the "division of the way", – that dualism of the active and the passive forces, Yang and Yin, which lies at the foundation of the sacred divinatory book the I-ching (or I-king). These two forces, represented in their concrete division by heaven and earth, attain their concrete union in man. Man can enjoy being and well-being only as a social being. The fundamental form of social life is the family, and the family is founded upon the virtue of filial piety. Faithful to the behests of antiquity, Confucius requires that this piety should not be limited to living parents, but should extend to the dead as well. For him, however, this side of the matter does not retain its former significance. The primeval belief in the full reality of the life beyond the grave, though not directly denied by him, has in itself no power whatever over his mind and interests him only through its moral and practical consequences. To the question of his disciples whether the souls of the dead really exist, he answered: "... if one says that they exist, then good sons will perhaps ruin themselves over the cult of ancestors; but if one says that they do not exist, then bad sons will perhaps leave their fathers altogether without burial." Hence this conclusion: "One must bring sacrifices to the ancestors as though they were actually present; one should worship the spirits and the genii as though they were before us".

In any case, remote ancestors occupy no significant place in Confucian morality; the force of filial piety is concentrated here chiefly upon the relation to one's immediate parents. Kun-tszy (Confucius) said: "During thy father's lifetime carefully observe his will; after his death ever direct thy gaze upon his actions; that son who for three years after the death of his father does not deviate in his conduct from the manner of acting of the departed, may be called one having filial piety".

In order to give a livelier idea of the Chinese view of this fundamental principle of their religion and morality, let us quote from Mr Georgievsky's book the conversation between son and father in the drama Pi-pa-chi, The Story of the Flute (the father proposes to his son that he set out for the capital in order to obtain the highest academic degree; the son is afraid to leave his aged parents and his young wife).

Father (addressing his son).

– Thou thinkest only of the pleasures of married life and fearest not to contradict thy father.

Son (falling on his knees and addressing Heaven).

– Heaven! I contradict my father?! (Rising.) O my parents! can your son oppose you? O! I repeat: nothing keeps me here except your advanced age. Dear father! suppose – and it is possible – that a flood should occur: what will be said then? First they will say that your son was not imbued with filial piety, that he abandoned his aged father, his aged mother, in pursuit of heaven knows what office; then they will accuse you yourselves of want of forethought and point out that you, having an only son, made him undertake a distant journey exposed to mischances. The more I reflect, the more difficult does it become for me to fulfil your command.

Father.

– Whether to fulfil my command or not, – that depends on thee; but tell me briefly: what dost thou understand by filial piety?

Mother (in an irritated voice).

– O heaven! thou hast lived to be more than eighty years old and dost not know in what filial piety consists: it requires that a son should lead his aged father on leading-strings, like a child.

Father (in a meek voice).

– Wife! what dost thou mean by this?

Son.

– Dear father! I will answer your question. The duties of a son towards his parents consist in the following: a son must take care that in summer and in winter his parents enjoy every comfort of life; he must himself every evening make ready the bed for his parents; he must every morning, at the first crowing of the cock, address his parents with the most respectful inquiries after their health; he must in the course of the day repeatedly ask his parents whether cold or heat troubles them; a son is obliged to support his parents when they walk; he is obliged to respect what they respect and to love what they love, down to horses and dogs inclusive; a son during their lifetime must not remove himself from the house in which they live. So thought the ancients about filial piety, so did they practise it.

Father.

– My son! the duties thou hast enumerated are the most elementary. There exist many degrees of filial piety, and thou hast not spoken of its higher requirements, of filial piety par excellence.

Mother (in an irritated voice).

– Unhappy man! thou art not dead yet; wait, – it is only after death that one can require of a son the fulfilment of those last duties of which the book the Siao-ching speaks. For the present the question is only of the journey to the capital.

Father.

– My son, hear me! The first degree of filial piety requires the service of one's parents, the second – the service of the sovereign, the third – the attainment of high rank. To preserve the body received from one's parents and carefully to avoid everything that may injure it – this is the beginning of filial piety; to attain high rank, to act in accordance with the requirements of true morality, to leave behind one a good memory for ages to come, to the glory of one's parents – this is the end, the summit of filial piety. He who, having poor and aged parents, does not strive after high rank, is not imbued with filial piety. If by thy merits thou shalt raise thyself to the rank of a mandarin and turn the wretched dwelling of thy parents into a magnificent villa, then thou wilt thereby have fulfilled all thy duties, – such is my extreme opinion.
