As soon as you drift off by day, or wake at midnight, —

Someone is here... There are two of us,

Radiant eyes look straight into the soul

In the dark night and by day.

The ice melts, the gloomy clouds dissolve,

Flowers blossom...

And in the transparent stillness of motionless harmonies

You are reflected...

These entries in the poetic diary run through the whole of Solovyov’s conscious life, recording how, for the chosen one, ‘one pair of eyes alone shines’.

So, what is described here is undoubtedly love, personal and mutual, sometimes giving the lovers cause for jealous laments and crowning them with bliss beyond this world. Outwardly, we know the hero of this romance: he is the author of the poems, in his earthly and mortal guise Vladimir Solovyov, Doctor of Philosophy. The heroine, however, in her mystical essence, is Eternal Femininity herself, the World Soul, Sophia; whether she also has an earthly guise cannot be inferred directly from the poems. Yet this possibility is perhaps not excluded; Anna Nikolaevna Schmidt will assure the hero of the romance that this is so. He himself, it seems, does not think so, although some grounds for a different conclusion may be offered by the obscure allusions in such inherently ambiguous and unclear poems as ‘Oh, What Does It Mean’, ‘I See Your Eyes’, ‘Why Words’ and ‘Not by the Will of Fate’: precisely those with which Anna Nikolaevna Schmidt later substantiated her claims, maintaining that they spoke of her herself as Solovyov’s female alter ego. In any event, the heroine of the ‘romance’ here is first and foremost the World Soul herself, and it is this fact that analysis must address before all else.

In the history of poetry, mysticism and speculation, Vladimir Solovyov is the only figure who not only had poetic and philosophical contemplations of Sophia, but also claimed a personal relationship with her, taking on an erotic character, of course in the most exalted sense. For this reason, he generally experienced earthly love as something of a fall or an act of infidelity. He could not become a father or a husband, for he felt himself as though betrothed (the articles on ‘The Meaning of Love’ also bear indirect witness to this). Of course, this was something quite different from what is described in Pushkin’s enigmatic poem ‘The Poor Knight’ [A6]: Solovyov’s shield bore not M. D. but S., and the difference lay not in the initials but in the mystical entities. Through the introduction of this element, in the light of this, so to speak, erotic epistemology, Sophia appears for the first time in Vladimir Solovyov not merely as a metaphysical essence but also as a hypostasis, a concrete female person, who can arrange rendezvous, write little notes (those who have seen them say that such notes, produced through ‘automatic’ writing, can be found in Solovyov’s archive), and generally ‘fuss over’ her adepts, to use Vladimir Solovyov’s familiar expression [A7].

The distinctive character and, in its own kind, uniqueness of Vladimir Solovyov’s mystical experience stand out clearly when it is compared with that of the great masters in this field, foremost among whom is Jacob Boehme. Despite being called ewige Jungfrau, Sophia in Boehme is essentially not at all a principle of Eternal Femininity [A8], still less a person who could be an ‘eternal companion’ and arrange ‘rendezvous’, however mystical. She is a principle of the universe, or the totality of creative energies in the Godhead. If, with considerable stretching of the point, she can still be called a Virgin, this is rather to indicate her opposition to woman. Let us recall that Boehme’s governing idea is not a pre-eternal sexual polarity, but its overcoming in the supra-sexual androgyne, the ‘mannliche Jungfrau’. Such was Adam before the Fall, whose integral image Christ restored in himself. Eve, on the other hand, the female principle, has only a temporary significance and must be overcome, as something bound up with sin. Thus, in Boehme’s system, Sophia has the significance of a metaphysical principle expressed in mystical language. Nor is there anything in Boehme’s personal experience, insofar as he tells us of it himself and it shines through his complex constructions, that would bring it close to Solovyov’s. On the contrary, the possibility of a mystical ‘romance’ is just as excluded here as, for example, in Hegel and his Idea, which is a metaphysical correlate of Boehme’s Sophia. Boehme and Vladimir Solovyov can be brought together only at one particular point, beyond which their inner dialectic takes them in different directions. The same must be said of such thinkers as Pordage, Saint-Martin and Baader, who, in their thinking about Sophia, either draw directly upon Boehme or reproduce him, and are guilty of neither a cult of Eternal Femininity nor a mystical romance with Sophia. There is no need here to dwell on the details of their doctrines [A9].

The poets of modern times, whose precursors are Dante and Petrarch, began to speak of Eternal Femininity: Shelley, Goethe and Novalis. Yet in none of them do we see the traits peculiar to Solovyov’s eroticism. Least of all in Dante, with his apotheosis of love in the figure of Beatrice (or Petrarch with Laura). Beatrice (like Laura) is a particular earthly woman, who has departed this world and revealed to believing love its heavenly content. This love is Sophian in the highest degree. For Dante, Beatrice is an embodiment or countenance of Sophia, and yet she is still not Sophia. She has a definite earthly biography that continues in heaven.

We already know what femininity is in Shelley from Solovyov’s own account: here the difference is still deeper. Goethe spoke with renewed force of the ‘eternally feminine’ in the mystical epilogue to Faust. By these words he enchanted even those who would not have wished to love him. And yet, how did he speak? It is not she, but it, das ewig weibliche, the principle of Sophian character, the female principle. This is better than Boehme’s misogyny, hidden under the mask of ‘androgynism’, but it is still only ‘das’, not ‘sie’. Of course, even this is already a mystical and poetic discovery, in whose light both the figure of Margaret and the female beings of the higher spheres about the throne of the Mother of God acquire a new meaning. Here the sphere of Sophia, of Sophian character, is outlined, but within it both its centres, the Mother of God and Sophia, merge without distinction. In Goethe’s depiction it is precisely the Mother of God, Mater gloriosa, who is the centre of the ‘eternally feminine’, towards which male and female beings are drawn, among them Una poenitentium, sonst Gretchen genannt, and Faust is drawn after her (it is curious that Goethe here repeats the mystical aberration of Pushkin’s ‘Poor Knight’, who likewise made ‘A. M. D.’ the centre of mystical eroticism). Although this merging of Sophia and the Mother of God has sufficient grounds in a certain sense, on the same grounds a distinction is also required, and its absence does not go unpunished. It should be mentioned here that this distinction was made with impeccable clarity, and wholly in the spirit of Solovyov’s teaching, by Anna Nikolaevna Schmidt in one of her ‘exoteric’ articles [A10]. Solovyov, for his part, not only distinguished firmly between the two mystical centres in his philosophising, but also separated them perfectly clearly in his poetry: witness, alongside the poems of the Sophian cycle already known to us, his own magnificent work of translation, ‘Praises and Supplications to the Most Holy Virgin’ (from Petrarch). We must therefore acknowledge that, on the question of Eternal Femininity, the great German poet has been surpassed and left behind by our contemplative. Goethe knew the one with whom Vladimir Solovyov had his ‘rendezvous’ neither poetically nor mystically. Nor did Novalis know her. The ‘blue rose’ of German Romanticism, the Sophian character of woman shining through Sonechka by virtue of love, recalls Dante and Beatrice and is, in any event, closer to Goethe than to Vladimir Solovyov. The Russian singers of Eternal Femininity, too, Lermontov and, among our contemporary poets, the earlier Alexander Blok and Vyacheslav Ivanov, do not coincide with Solovyov on this decisive point. They are in harmony with him insofar as it is a question of Eternal Femininity under its various countenances: the azure of heaven, the Beautiful Lady or the Unknown Woman, the luxuriant mystical rose; but this personal striving directly towards ‘Sophia Urania’ is foreign to them. Solovyov’s case still remains unique, at least in literature.

To add the final touch to this characterisation, let us subject the motif of Solovyov’s poetry that concerns us to the sharpest reagent at our disposal. Once again, Pushkin, with his wondrous insight, supplies it. He did not pass by mystical eroticism either: remaining inwardly alien to it himself, he managed, as though in passing, with the ease and grace peculiar to him alone, to recognise a profound mystical problem in a deviation characteristic of medieval Catholicism. I am speaking, of course, of ‘The Poor Knight’ in its original, unpolished, but more extensive version. There we read:

There lived in the world a poor knight,

Brave and upright in spirit,

Gloomy and pale in appearance,

Silent and simple.

He had a single vision,

Which he did not understand

(later variant: beyond the mind’s comprehension)

He saw (beside the cross)

On the way the Virgin Mary,

The Mother of the Lord Christ.

From that time, his soul asleep,

He looked at no woman,

And until the grave, to none of them

Would he speak a word.

. . . . . . . . . . . .
