(On Heinrich Eicken’s History and System of the Medieval Worldview)
As questions of religious and philosophical consciousness become more acute, interest naturally awakens in the Middle Ages as an epoch of intense and passionate religious life. Advances in historical scholarship also help to satisfy this interest. ‘Only ignorance of the medieval past made it possible to imagine it as an epoch of deadened intellectual activity and the hopeless decline of culture,’ says Professor I. M. Grevs in his substantial preface to Eicken’s book. ‘Medieval people thought with animation and anguish, and sought passionately and persistently... It would be a strange delusion to imagine them all as ignorant people. Barbarisation was merely the crust that then covered Europe, and even that coverage was incomplete.’ Professor Grevs points out the utter error of the eighteenth-century rationalists’ view of the Middle Ages as ‘a time of universal, cruel barbarism, of dark ignorance without exception, of a complete halt in the mind’s work on theoretical questions of understanding the world and practical demands for the improvement of life’. On the lips of superficial rationalism, the epithet ‘medieval’ still sounds contemptuous. One cannot but rejoice that Russian literature in translation has been enriched by so substantial and comprehensive a study of the history and system of the medieval worldview as Professor H. Eicken’s voluminous book, in V. N. Lind’s conscientious translation. Few books will be read with such absorbing and almost unflagging interest as Professor Eicken’s work, for it treats the highest values of the spirit and depicts a grand and original attempt by historical humanity to affirm and realise these values in life. The Middle Ages are distinguished by the extraordinary, exceptional seriousness and passion of their life, for this was an epoch of intense religious feeling, and every genuinely religious life is something unique in its concentration and significance. And what can arouse more absorbing interest than a sincere and passionate human life? Perhaps because of the historical distance, which effaces details and trifles and preserves only what is elevated and grand, the Middle Ages involuntarily find their symbol in a majestic Gothic cathedral, soaring towards heaven and speaking of eternity in this flight of stone, which now stands amid railway stations, theatres, restaurants and the other architectural structures of our varied and motley modern age. Every serious and genuine religious life necessarily presupposes a distinctive exclusiveness, a concentration upon one idea that outside observers call ‘one-sidedness’. ‘I am a consuming fire,’ Jehovah says of himself, and this concentration upon one idea distinguishes the Middle Ages to the highest degree, favourably or unfavourably according to one’s worldview: they are scorched and seared by this flame of consuming religious fire. He had a single vision, Beyond the mind’s understanding. With these lines Pushkin gave inspired expression to this trait in his poem about the Poor Knight, and his lines positively invite their use as an epigraph to Eicken’s book. Intense idealism, a thirst for the transcendent, the offering to it, the invisible, of empirical, visible goods, the soul’s unflagging upward impulse, ceaseless spiritual striving and the painful tragedy of its inevitable incompleteness: these are the traits that make us rank the Middle Ages among the heroic epochs of history, although there are just as many grounds for classing them among the barbaric. They scorch you with the hot, sometimes foul breath of parched ascetic lips; the furrow of tragedy is cut deep into a face emaciated by fasting and stirred by prayer. This countenance may be oppressive and terrible, but it is full of grandeur, and utterly alien to it are those petty and commonplace feelings that modern philistinism has bred.
What vision, then, stood before the ‘poor knight’, encased in the armour of a crusading warrior and clothed over it in a monk’s habit? What was the ideal of the Middle Ages, since of this epoch, unlike many others, one can say that it had an ideal of its own? This ideal is universal and grand; it was nurtured in the soul of the greatest religious genius of the Western Church, the blessed Augustine: ciuitas Dei, the Kingdom of God on earth, of this world. Conceived already in classical antiquity as a state of the wise and righteous, present to Plato’s prophetic vision and taken up by the Western Church at the moment of the old world’s collapse, it became the soul of a new historical construction, a new gathering together of scattered humanity. The means of realising it was papal theocracy. To subjugate the world to Christ by bowing it before the throne of the pope, proclaimed Christ’s vicar on earth: this was the programme and aim that inspired the best and strongest people of that time, including the most remarkable occupants of the papal throne, and inspired them as even dreams of the socialist Zukunftstaat, the ‘state of the future’, do not inspire people in our own day. What was at stake was by no means merely the ambition and lust for power of individual popes, but a universal historical idea, an entire worldview.
To understand the historical peculiarities of the Middle Ages, we must attend to the basic traits of medieval religious life, and in particular to the religious metaphysics of the epoch, to its distinctive understanding of Christianity, which approaches the world-denying religion of Buddhism. This trait is asceticism, conceived not as a path and means, but as an end. Not the sanctification of the world and the flesh, but their overcoming as far as possible; not the deification of the earth, but earthlessness, a complete and principled distrust of the world: this is what distinguishes the Christian worldview of the Middle Ages. It rested on singling out, in preference to the others, just one characteristic of Christianity, which has significance only in connection with the whole, and substituting it for that entire whole. Christianity, with its teaching on the reality and objectivity of the evil in which the world ‘lies’, undoubtedly rejects pagan immediacy, that childlike trust in the ‘world’, as yet undissolved by consciousness, which distinguishes, for example, the classical Greek in the early period of his existence. But the teaching that the world has been saved and the flesh deified by Christ occupies the central place in Christian metaphysics; hence the dominion of evil is only temporary and partial, not substantial in relation to the world and the flesh, but merely functional. Yet the truths of Christianity unfold in life only through a prolonged historical process (otherwise, what would be the point of history?); they unfold, one might say with Hegel, dialectically. And in the historical rupture that Christianity experienced at the turn from antiquity to the Middle Ages, what must have been felt most strongly was precisely the principled rejection of a paganism surpassed for ever, with its conception of the existence of ‘an idyllic peace between God, man and nature’.
‘For the ancient Greek, nature was a cosmos whose soul was the deity... Nature had a divine character, and the deity a natural one. The deity stood in an equally close relation to man. Among no other people did the boundaries of the divine and the human merge as they did among the Greeks... The world of the gods of the Greek Olympus was represented in forms of sensuous beauty. Sensuous emotions played the same role in it as in the human world, only they operated in the sphere of perfect beauty. In this latter sense the Olympian gods were moral ideals for the Greeks. Not abstract holiness, but eternal youth and eternal beauty were the distinguishing attributes of the Greek divinities. The moral principle for the Greek was therefore the aesthetically beautiful. Greek morality demanded the harmonious, even development of all dispositions of the soul and the restraint of all feelings within the bounds of order and measure... The contradiction between moral consciousness and sensuous nature was unknown in the youthful period of classical Greece, because the Greeks set themselves the task not of negating sensuousness, but of ennobling it aesthetically’ (Eicken, 19).
That is why the ideal of Hellenic virtue was formulated in the expression ‘καλός καγαθός’, ‘beautiful and good’, which is almost impossible to convey in our ethical language. Humanity had to awaken from this undifferentiated state of childlike immediacy and religious sleep, and it was awakened for ever by the Judaeo-Christian teaching on sin and redemption. It is unsurprising that ‘historical’ Christianity, that is, Christianity drawn into the process of historical development and maturation, should have felt this aspect, this opposition of its own to paganism, earlier and more strongly than anything else, and that the first determination it assumed in history should have been ascetic. Asceticism colours the entire medieval worldview.
‘The Church’s moral teaching was therefore founded not on a distinction between aspirations for the common good and selfish aspirations, but on the opposition of earthly interests to heavenly ones. The opposition of good and evil was reduced to the opposition between God and the world advanced by Christian metaphysics. The Spanish bishop Isidore, who died in 636, said: “Good is striving towards God, and evil is striving after earthly advantage and passing glory.” Bernard of Clairvaux once instilled the fear of God in these words: “Forget your people and your parents’ home, renounce carnal inclinations, forget secular customs, restrain yourself from your former vices”, and so forth. Catherine of Siena likewise placed wealth and worldly honour on the same level as religious sensuality. “The world,” she said, “is opposed to God, and God is opposed to the world; the two have nothing in common. The Son of God chose for himself poverty, low station, mockery, hunger and thirst, while the world seeks wealth, honours and enjoyment.” The world was a “vale of tears”, and human life a journey through this dark valley, filled with thousands of dangers and terrors, towards the spiritual world of the life to come, full of light and peace. Thus the life of the soul began, in essence, at the moment when the life of the body ended. The death of the earthly body was the liberation of the soul. The natural relation between life and death was reversed. This world-denying tendency of the Middle Ages found its fullest expression in the work On Contempt for the World, written by Pope Innocent III in 1198, when he was still a cardinal. It says: “We die while we live, and cease to die only when we cease to live.” Those who overcame the fear of death awaited their earthly end with passionate desire’ (Eicken, 279–280).
‘Love (charitas) is contempt for the world and love for God,’ says the Cistercian abbot Ogerius. ‘Love for God removes man from the world, and love for the world removes him from God.’
The paradox of the medieval ascetic worldview consists, in Eicken’s opinion, in the fact that this world-denying, earthless teaching led to the endeavour to take possession of this condemned world and this earth, to become naturalised in this world, as it were. Transcendent metaphysics proved to be bound up with the clerical positivism of the Roman see and its power-seeking designs. Those who recognised no values in this world devoted all their energy to taking possession of it.
‘Asceticism and the dominion of the Church penetrated to the very depths of the life of the Western peoples. Their political and economic life, scholarship and art, down to the minutest details of everyday life, were alike determined by these ideas of ecclesiastical teaching. These two traits ran through the entire structure of medieval life: on the one hand, the suffering trait of renunciation of the world, and on the other, the characteristic, violent trait of world conquest. In the Middle Ages the symbol of the Christian religion, the cross, was as much a “sign of the mortification of the flesh” as of “victory over the world”. The Middle Ages conquered and subjugated the world while simultaneously denying it. To die to the world meant the same as to live for the Church... In every instance where the world was denied on the one hand, the Church was affirmed on the other. An increase in asceticism necessarily entailed a corresponding increase in the Church’s worldly power. The two, the denial of the world and the Church’s worldwide dominion, were synonymous concepts in the medieval worldview. The originality and essence of medieval culture lay in the full elaboration of these two mutually conditioning tendencies. Only from this standpoint of the identical significance of asceticism and the worldwide dominion of the priesthood does the spirit of medieval history become intelligible. While the idea of the Church’s worldwide dominion brings all earthly affairs within the sphere of its activity, the Church itself strove, on the one hand, by virtue of its transcendent metaphysics, away from the earthly world, while on the other, by virtue of its hierarchical principle, it returned once more to the world and its interests’ (Eicken, 137).
In his work Eicken gives an entirely satisfactory explanation of the apparent contradiction between asceticism and the striving for power, in which some have seen inconsistency or the fruit of the popes’ personal ambition and lust for power. ‘The denial of the world and dominion over the world have their common point of departure in the cross of Christ.’ The reason for this lies in the medieval Church’s endeavour to save the world by force. Recognising no independent values in the world, and believing that the only means of saving it could be its restraint and complete submission to the ecclesiastical organisation, that is, strictly speaking, to the clergy headed by the pope, this organisation entered into a life-and-death struggle with the rebellious ‘world’. Denying any possibility, and consequently any task, of illuminating and sanctifying the world and the flesh, the Church bore down upon them with its full, then enormous, weight, suppressing them as far as it could. Even in the Middle Ages it never succeeded in suppressing the world completely and finally and bringing about the Church’s triumph; an unremitting, muffled struggle went on between the rebellious world and the world-denying, but for that very reason world-embracing, Church. Reality represented a de facto compromise determined by the balance of forces.
‘The resistance that human nature, bound to the conditions of earthly life, offered to the Church’s supersensuous, world-ruling idea, despite its overwhelming logic, was nothing other than a manifestation of the profound suffering of sensuous nature under the violence inflicted upon it. This trait of suffering occasioned by the denial of the world, deeply marked upon the countenance of the Middle Ages, was in the history of the people a reflection of the image of the Redeemer dying on the cross, in whom the Middle Ages saw the ideal image of human life. This characteristic trait of suffering, a feeling denied by the religious idea of the Church, transformed the world-ruling medieval Kingdom of God into a picture of the Passion of the Lord’ (Eicken, 306–307).
The Church’s spiritual despotism weighed upon medieval life, casting a distinctive ecclesiastical and ascetic veil over all its domains. The chief thing with which it did not and would not reconcile itself, against which it struggled most fiercely, was the division of life, so familiar to us, into ecclesiastical and secular domains. The medieval Church was unwilling in principle to admit anything secular, that is, alien or disobedient to it. As Eicken observes,
‘the religious spirit of the Middle Ages unconditionally rejected all secular culture, putting in its place the divine institutions of the Church. In its underlying idea the Church was not, as it asserted without being conscious of its own aims, a support for secular education and the state’s legal order, but rather their principled adversary. The existence of the state and the family, of secular art and scholarship, was assured only to the extent that they succeeded in protecting themselves from the Church’s religious idea. The destruction of existing secular institutions and the rebuilding of society after the prototype of the ideal Kingdom of God: such is the fundamental trait of medieval culture, regularly recurring in all its domains. Medieval culture created a grand system embracing every relationship, whose fundamental thought, the Christian idea of redemption, was consistently carried through even in the smallest events of human life. All the relationships of the Middle Ages were derived from this thought. The entire sphere of culture was transformed into the Kingdom of God on earth, into an allegorical representation of the Kingdom of Heaven... The Church was the positive value that secured the mental image of the supersensuous world. The idea of the Kingdom of God meant nothing other than the worldwide power of the Church. Thus, while seeking on the one hand to detach itself from the world, the Middle Ages constantly returned to it on the other. Denial of the world was equivalent to the transfer of all secular power to the Church, and the Church’s world power became the central point of the entire religious system. Since the Church’s inception, the Gospel of love had turned into a doctrine of dominion and violence... The idea of denying the world itself became the source of the Church’s “worldliness”. The more persistently the religious spirit tried to flee the world, the more deeply it had to immerse itself in worldly bustle. Denial of the world on one side conditioned an equally strong affirmation on the other. Through the Gospel of poverty the Church acquired incalculable riches; by its denial of sexual sensuality it transformed religious metaphysics into a system of the crudest sensuous conceptions; the Gospel of humility helped the Church become the greatest and strongest state of its time. In this internal dissolution of the supersensuous Kingdom of God lay the tragic contradiction of the medieval history of development’ (Eicken, pp. 656–657).
The ideal of Catholic theocracy rests on betrayal of Christ’s commandment. It succumbed to the temptation that Christ rejected in the wilderness; it took up the sword to build the Kingdom of God, not for some external, earthly and transient ends, but to establish holiness among people. Compulsory holiness, the dilemma of obedience to the Church or the stake: such was the worldview of the most powerful people of this epoch, whose spirit Dostoevsky reproduced so synthetically, with such astonishing religious and historical insight, in ‘The Grand Inquisitor’. Of Pope Gregory VII, one of the greatest representatives of medieval theocracy, his contemporary Peter Damian once used a prophetic expression that makes one shudder: ‘holy Satan’. Holy Satan! This is one of those lapidary expressions that characterise whole epochs: both holiness and Satanism are equally characteristic of the Middle Ages. It is characteristic that the greatest people of the epoch, its ‘heroes’ in the Carlylean sense of the word, stand in principle upon the standpoint of this ‘holy Satanism’.
Of Gregory VII we read: ‘He desired the dominion of the Church, not from a personal lust for power, but from ardent zeal for the divine idea expressed in the Church and in his ministry. It was not personal arbitrariness but the logical requirement of the system that guided his plans for world dominion.’ ‘His life and his teaching were at odds with one another,’ the heroic poem of Robert Guiscard says of Gregory. ‘He excelled in all virtues and burned with zeal for God,’ remarks Lambert von Hersfeld. This zeal for God impelled him in 1073, when he foresaw disagreement with Henry IV, to write in a letter to Duke Godfrey the Younger of Lorraine the words of the prophet Jeremiah: ‘Cursed is the man who keeps His sword from blood.’ He then plunged the Christian states, and especially the German Empire, into endless turmoil and devastating wars, in order to plant the cross upon the ruins of the world and establish the peace of the Kingdom of God. The same type of sincere devotion to the idea of the Kingdom of God through the Church’s power is represented by Norbert, founder of the Premonstratensian order, and by Bernard of Clairvaux, who taught: ‘To be killed or to kill for Christ is no crime, but, on the contrary, the greatest glory.’ ‘By the death of pagans the Christian is glorified, because through it Christ is glorified.’ This unconscious blasphemy against Christ on the lips of a saint of the medieval Church characterises its worldview better than anything else. The Cistercian abbot Arnaud, who directed the wars of extermination against the Albigensians, reported to Pope Innocent III on the capture of the town of Béziers: ‘Our men spared neither sex nor rank: they killed about 20,000 people with the sword. Terrible confusion arose among the enemy; the whole town was plundered and burnt. God’s avenging judgement destroyed it in a wondrous manner.’ The monk Peter of Vaux-de-Cernay described the events of the Albigensian war in the same spirit: after the capture of the town of Lavaur in 1211, the soldiers of the crusading army ‘burnt innumerable heretics with extraordinary joy’. On taking possession of another fortified place, the bishops, at least initially, attempted conversion, since the fortress had not been taken by storm but was surrendering on terms. But as this attempt proved fruitless, the soldiers fell upon the heretics and burnt them ‘with extraordinary joy’. Later, in the 1230s, Dominican monks travelled through the northern German lands and preached a war of extermination against the Stedingers, who were exterminated just like the Albigensians. A terrible embodiment of ‘holy Satan’ is Bishop Conrad of Marburg, a true type of the ‘Grand Inquisitor’, who fell at the hands of assassins, after which, in the words of the chronicle, ‘people once again breathed joyfully and cheerfully’.
This feature of the Church’s worldview, namely that it considered it entirely consonant with Christianity to give Christianity a spurious triumph by fire and sword, this presence within it of the spirit of the ‘Grand Inquisitor’, or ‘holy Satan’, brought it into inevitable conflict with the state. And indeed, quarrels with the state over power, disputes about whose hands should hold the sword, fill the Middle Ages until this question receives its final and authoritative resolution in the bull of Boniface III of 1302, which decrees: ‘Both swords are within the power of the Church, the spiritual and the temporal; one is used for the Church and the other by the Church itself; one by the priesthood, the other by kings and warriors, but at the will and discretion of the priesthood.’ The arming of the Church with armour, mail and sword thus became a dogma of the Catholic faith.
In its struggle with the state, the Church seeks to undermine its fundamental principles, to humiliate and discredit it. This argument is curious, taking shape as a peculiar hierocratic anarchism whose point is directed against the secular, godless, unconsecrated state. What is the state’s right to exist, or, since the state is the source of positive law, what is the right of law (ius iuris)? The religious metaphysics of the Middle Ages saw the cause of the state’s origin solely in man’s sinful nature; there was no place for it in the blessed primordial condition.
‘By reason of sin one man rules over another, whereas by God’s law man has dominion over the fish of the sea and the birds of heaven,’ observed the Archbishop of Milan in his greeting to Emperor Frederick I. Pope Gregory VII derived the origin of the state directly from the devil. ‘Who does not know,’ he wrote to the Bishop of Metz in 1081, ‘that kings and princes descend from those who do not know God, but in blind greed and intolerable insolence seek to rule their fellow men through arrogance, violence, treachery, murder, indeed through almost every kind of crime, with the help of the devil as prince of this world?’ Innocent IV expressed himself as follows in a letter to the emperor concerning the origin of the state: ‘Constantine placed in the hands of the Church the tyranny, the unlawful and unstable power, that had previously operated everywhere in the world, and what he had formerly possessed and enjoyed unjustly he now received from its true source as an honourable gift.’ According to Alvarius Pelagius, ‘only impious men established the worldly state at the beginning of the world, which is why before the Flood the first ruler among men was Cain; after the Flood, those who first obtained worldly government descended from the accursed tribe of the Hamites’ (Eicken, pp. 316–317). Such was the Church’s attitude to the state, and its attitude to sovereigns was no better. John of Salisbury calls secular princes servants of the priesthood, ‘who must carry out that part of the sacred duties unworthy of having the priest’s hands applied to it’. The Carthusian prophet Gvitso of Grenoble, who died in 1137, wrote: ‘The conduct of kings and princes is such that they wish to exalt themselves not through their own improvement, but through the harm done to other people and their humiliation.’ Pope Innocent IV called Frederick II a ‘dragon’ and the other kings ‘serpents’.
It is curious that already in the Middle Ages we encounter the theory of the contractual origin of the state, which was put to such revolutionary use in the eighteenth century. It was employed to cast further aspersions on the state and discredit it.
‘Know,’ the Archbishop of Milan told Emperor Frederick I in 1158, ‘that every right of the people to legislate has been transferred to you. Your will is law, as it is said: quod principi placuit, legis habet vigorem, “what has pleased the prince has the force of law”, for the people has transferred to him all its dominion and all its power.’ The same conclusions were sometimes drawn from this proposition as in the eighteenth century. ‘Is it not clear,’ asked Mansgold von Lauterbach, ‘that it is just to withdraw the rank conferred and free the people from subjection to one who himself first violated the contract by which he was raised to that rank?’ Another conclusion was also drawn from it, more characteristic of the epoch, namely that ‘both royal power and the priesthood, as Innocent IV said, exist among the people of God: the priesthood by divine calling, and royal power by human coercion’.
Starting from this conception of the differing natures of Church and state, representatives of the Church sought consistently to delimit these spheres. The question of the separation of Church and state was raised in the Middle Ages too, but found its practical resolution in the external subordination of the state to the authority of the Church in the person of the pope.
Gregory VII repeatedly declared, referring to the testimony of the early Church, that the ‘freedom’ of the Church was the aim of his endeavours. Yet ‘in the name of this freedom all the Church’s incursions into the sphere of the secular authorities were justified. For the sake of the “freedom of the Church”, Innocent IV ordered the deposition of Frederick II and the appointment of a new king, and finally preached a crusade against the Hohenstaufens. Even the cruel persecution of heretics was supposed to serve the restoration of “ecclesiastical freedom”, as Pope Gregory IX explained in bulls issued in 1233 and 1239’ (Eicken, p. 331).
The Church sought to remove from the sphere of influence of the disregarded, even despised, state not only ecclesiastical affairs but every task whatsoever except internal and external defence. The theory of the night-watchman state, which F. Lassalle ridiculed and refuted in his polemic against the Prussian liberals, also originated in the Middle Ages.
‘All the ideal tasks of culture, scholarship and art, and the schools that furthered their study, were placed entirely in the hands of the Church. The state was then excluded from the whole sphere of charity, from the care of the poor and sick, since it was assumed that works of merciful love primarily concerned the Church. Likewise assigned to the Church’s jurisdiction were all those branches of civil and criminal law that in one way or another, directly or indirectly, touched upon the interests of the life to come. In any event, the Church possessed, or at least claimed, jurisdiction in matters of guardianship and wills, in disputes over tithes and patronage; cases concerning such offences as blasphemy, sacrilege, violation of the sanctity of marriage and the like were subject to its courts. Conscription and the conduct of war, the sovereign right of coinage, the levying of taxes and duties, a limited supreme jurisdiction and police power constituted the entire substance of the medieval state’ (Eicken, p. 328).
Having diminished the state in its functions, the Church wished to retain supreme sovereignty over it and, according to its own needs, to raise emperors to the throne or remove them from it, to take pre-eminence from one nation and transfer it to another. The pope’s power, power of every kind including earthly power, was, as Raymond of Sabunde’s Natural Theology taught, ‘without limit, without bounds and without measure’. Naturally, the state could not submit without a struggle to the boundlessness of these claims. The dispute over prerogatives between the ecclesiastical and state organisations runs through the whole of medieval and indeed modern history, and its latest acts are unfolding before our eyes in the form of the final separation of Church and state in France. The clericalisation of the state in the Middle Ages necessarily gives way to its laicisation in modern times. Yet even now, medieval conceptions of both swords belonging to ecclesiastical authority still live on in Rome and the countries associated with it, and dreams have not yet died of restoring an order over which history has already inscribed for ever the indelible words: mene, tekel, peres.
Asceticism leaves its mark both on medieval economic activity and on the Church’s attitude to material culture. In relation to material culture, the standpoint of religious pedagogy was adopted, and, most characteristically, in its exclusively individualistic formulation, which had no room at all for the question of the role of material culture and the growth of national wealth as a necessary condition of the development of world history, and consequently of the coming of the Kingdom of God. Economic questions were considered only in connection with personal moral training. Owing to its moralism, the Church brought great rigour of principle to the evaluation of economic relations. Thus, for example, many centuries before any socialist critique of capital, the Church was an implacable opponent of interest on capital and fought it through legislation; it also rejected in principle private property and the accumulation of wealth in private hands. Even Proudhon’s formula was expressed almost word for word by Heisterbach in his homilies: ‘Every rich man is either a thief or the heir of a thief.’ In general, the Church brings a moral principle into the dark and most often amoral, or even immoral, sphere of economic relations, preaching abstinence, moderation and love of humanity. But at the same time, because of this same moralism, which here recalls Tolstoyism, the Church was not only a conservative but also a reactionary force. Seeking to preserve the primitive order of a natural economy for all time and leaving no opening for economic progress, which was necessary with the force of an elemental process, it thereby doomed itself to have that force break through against its will and beyond its influence. Individualistic asceticism is insufficient to establish <an order> embracing a principled attitude towards the national economy, which is a social process, with its own supra-individual laws, and which thereby impresses its stamp upon individual morality and activity as well.
The ascetic denial of the world and of the independent value of its interests also found expression in the Church’s attitude to the whole of spiritual culture, that is, to scholarship and art. All this was acknowledged and permitted only in so far as it received the Church’s sanctification, remained within its enclosure and met one or another of its needs. The attitude to spiritual culture was merely utilitarian: it was regarded as a means to the Church’s ends, not as a value in its own right. This domain, which in its own way was even harder to subjugate than the state, seemed to arouse the greatest suspicion and apprehension. There existed an entire culture that had developed outside any influence of the Church and was afterwards alien to it: the ancient world. And war was declared upon ancient culture; it was placed under a ban, and participation in it was likewise permitted only on the same utilitarian grounds, in so far as an apologetic weapon could be borrowed from it. Thomas Aquinas called the desire for knowledge of things a sin in so far as it did not have in view the ultimate aim of all knowledge, namely the knowledge of God. Roger Bacon maintained that scholarship unconnected with Christian doctrine ‘led to infernal darkness’ (Eicken, p. 524). The Church’s policy, directed towards implementing these requirements, led to outright obscurantism: for example, a series of councils forbids the clergy to study jurisprudence and medicine. Philosophy was naturally assigned only an ancillary role in relation to theology. Historical scholarship likewise served this task. It is curious to note that the greatest idea of the nineteenth century, the idea of evolution and even of progress, had been adopted by medieval historiography, already from Augustine.
‘Medieval historiography regarded the divine state of the Roman Church as the goal of human development, in which the history of all peoples found its unity. In the succession of peoples through time it saw a constant approach towards this universal goal. Thus historical scholarship, considering the destinies of peoples from the standpoint of the Christian state of God, adopted the concept of development. The exposition of the progressive development of the state of God constituted the medieval philosophy of history’ (Eicken, p. 569).
The Church’s influence was similar in lyric and dramatic poetry and in the visual arts.
In architecture in particular, the ascetic worldview found expression, alongside neglect of the provision of private dwellings, in the creation of churches, those eternal monuments of medieval piety which remain unsurpassed in the intensity of their inspiration even in modern times, with all their building technology.
‘The negation of material conditions in style and technique was the guiding idea of the art of building. Through its spatial proportions and its system, it achieved the appearance of having triumphantly overcome the earthly heaviness of matter. The same spirit that strives to free itself from all earthly conditions and manifests itself in the style also appears in the technique. Gothic art handled its material in a manner entirely contrary to that material’s nature: the filigree work of the towers, the perforated walls of the galleries and the delicate work of the window colonnettes would have been more suited to the nature of wood or metal than to coarse stone’ (Eicken, p. 647).
The entire medieval Church is this impulse to fly upwards, turning stone and lead into light wings, but their weight presses towards the earth and resists the proud design. And in this lies the tragedy, serious, profound and irreparable, that sets its stamp upon this epoch. It was doomed to an internal struggle with worldliness, which enfeebled its constructive energy, and to an external struggle with rebellious flesh and matter, which, like a compressed spring or compressed steam, developed greater resistance the greater the pressure became. Hence ‘the world, which represented an allegorical image of the hierarchical Kingdom of God, remained an unfinished work in the sublime style’. At the same time, an intellectual protest and rejection of the theocratic idea itself had ripened in history. Against the theocratic ideal and compulsory church allegiance was set the ideal of the free person and a free religious conscience. Humanism and the Reformation open the new epoch in which we live. The modern age can be understood precisely as a reaction against the Middle Ages, as a rebellion against their spiritual despotism and violence, as antithesis to thesis, which, according to Hegel, reflect upon one another. The Middle Ages denied the independent value and autonomy of culture and could not determine their relation to classical, pagan antiquity, or to all pre-Christian and extra-Christian culture in general, otherwise than by a bare denial of them; antiquity remained forbidden fruit. And so the first manifestation of the reaction against the medieval worldview is the restoration of antiquity: the discovery of classical antiquity, the restoration of a universal, unified tradition common to all humanity, is the first historical achievement of the humanist epoch. The Middle Ages regarded the rights and needs of the human person as such, of natural man, with undisguised contempt and rejection on principle. They knew only the whole, the Church and the members of that Church, reduced to the role of its obedient instruments. The reaction against the medieval worldview had to break this iron ring of universalism that oppressed the person and proclaim the rights of the person, the rights of natural man, who within the Church was by no means transfigured, but merely suppressed. This was humanism’s second and principal achievement. As Jacob Burckhardt, the acknowledged historian of the Italian Renaissance, observes, modern man was born in the humanist epoch, and consequently modern individualism originated then. Indeed, it seems to me that, in essence, the name humanism ought to apply not just to one particular epoch, the Renaissance, but to the whole of modern history, for in contrast to medieval theocratism this name best expresses its historical essence, its tasks and its one-sidedness.
The Russian historian of humanism, the late Professor M. S. Korelin, identifies the following traits as characteristic of humanist individualism: ‘first, man’s interest in himself, in his inner world; second, his interest, in the external world, primarily in another human being; third, the conviction of the high dignity of human nature in general and of man’s inalienable right to develop his capacities and satisfy his needs; fourth, interest in surrounding reality in so far as it has an influence upon man’.
Humanism and the Renaissance constituted a de facto protest against and negation of medieval ascetic theocratism. Yet in so far as religion remained a living historical force and the Church retained its religious authority, there was still a need both for a religious justification of what had taken place and for a religious protest against the Church’s teaching and practice. This religious clothing for the demands of humanist individualism was supplied by the Reformation, which, on the one hand, opposed to the claims of ecclesiastical universalism the rights of the believing, religious person, grounded in the doctrinal teaching on justification by faith and in criticism of the Church’s teaching on the sacraments and hierarchy. On the other hand, the Reformation gave religious justification to the secularisation of culture that had already begun in the humanist movement. The Reformation not only rejected the metaphysics of asceticism but generally reduced the role of the Church, which it regarded as a mere society of believers, to that of one among many institutions or factors in historical life, rejecting in principle the very task of the Church to embrace within itself every aspect of life, and thereby opening the way to secluded pietism combined with the general secularisation of life. Eicken is entirely right to point to this significance of the Reformation.
‘The Church’s ascetic morality, which derived the state, marriage, property and profit from a sinful principle, was overcome (?) by the Reformation teaching on justification. The latter did not set religious beliefs and concern for the salvation of the soul in opposition to worldly affairs, as the Roman Church did, but regarded these affairs as the true practical sphere in which faith operates. The teaching of the Reformation recognised the state as a direct divine institution, rather than one dependent upon the Church’s mediation... The Reformer regarded economic labour not as an institution necessary only because of the sinfulness of human nature and obstructing the state of Christian perfection, but as a condition absolutely necessary for establishing man’s right to exist. Religious edification and earthly activity were for him inseparably connected human tasks...
The Reformation therefore separated from the Church the entire sphere of the civil order of life, the state, the family and economic policy, in accordance with their legal nature, and left them to their own direction. The Apology of the Augsburg Confession expressed itself on this question in the following words: “This entire point concerning the distinction between the Kingdom of Christ and the civil kingdom has been usefully interpreted in the writings of our authors to mean that the Kingdom of Christ is spiritual, that is, it initiates in the heart the knowledge of God, the fear of God and faith, eternal righteousness and eternal life, whereas in external life it allows us to make use of the legal and state order existing among different peoples, under whose operation we live, just as it allows us to make use of medicine, the art of building, food, drink and pleasures” (Libri Symbolici ecclesiae Lutheranae). Consequently, the Reformation extended the sphere of its activity as much to the state, the family and economic occupations as to religious beliefs. Luther was a reformer of the former no less than of the latter’ (Eicken, 709, 713–714).
The Reformation recognised the Church as merely one among many aspects of human life, while humanism, in its extreme manifestations, especially in the most recent period, is not averse to removing it from the historical stage altogether. And so the majestic cathedral, reaching towards heaven, which in the Middle Ages dominated the poor, wretched and insignificant buildings huddled around it, begins in the course of modern history to be surrounded by new and alien structures. They encircle it, crowd it ever more closely, sometimes conceal it from view and in practice transform it from the one unique building into merely one of the city’s many buildings, in accordance with the ideas of the Reformation; sometimes, moreover, it is sealed up and no longer in use, as in the epoch of the great French Revolution, in accordance this time with the aspirations of a humanism that has turned pagan. The medieval cathedral, which knew no rival and was not only a house of prayer but also an assembly hall, a theatre for mystery plays, a court and an academy, is now surrounded by the palaces of secular rulers, museums with collections of statues from pagan antiquity and the latest works of art, theatres, universities, factories, labour exchanges and the future socialist phalansteries whose foundations are already being laid. Tourists inspect the cathedrals among other ‘sights’. This change in the outward appearance of the city symbolically reflected the whole immense transformation that took place in the consciousness of historical humanity during the modern age. The true spiritual architects of the modern age were undoubtedly the humanists and Reformers, headed by Luther, who struggled against the medieval Church, and the most recent history merely develops and embodies their ideals. From the seed they sowed there has grown a tree of many branches...
The Middle Ages and the modern age are as opposed to one another, and at the same time as similar, as the concavity and convexity of one and the same relief viewed from its two sides. The Middle Ages affirmed only the divine principle in life, which, however, as a divine-human process must be created through the free interaction of the divine and human principles. In seeking, in the name of this divine principle, to crush the human principle and its freedom, they fell into holy Satanism, into blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, for ‘where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom’. Conversely, the modern age, in its one-sided reaction against the Middle Ages, is inclined to forget the divine principle altogether. Wholly absorbed in the development of pure humanity, it stands on the border of godlessness, which in practice passes irresistibly into pagan polytheism, naturalism and idolatry. For religious nature abhors a vacuum, and in this sense one may repeat the many-sided and enigmatic saying that antiquity attributed to Thales of Miletus: πάντα πλῆρα θεῶν, ‘all things are full of gods’; for where the Spirit of God withdraws, evil spirits appear. The Middle Ages acknowledged an earthless heaven and merely tolerated the earth as an inevitable evil; the modern age knows chiefly the earth and remembers heaven only for private, personal use, as if on feast days in church. The Middle Ages set up monastic obedience as their highest ideal, the form of a willing slave in the name of the cross of Christ; the modern age has inscribed upon its banner human freedom and its affirmation in history, the free creation of culture, for which there are no bounds or laws except man himself. The medieval Church wanted to be everything, while denying and suppressing that everything; it wanted to be positive all-unity, while at the same time restraining multiplicity. Hence in practice it became a unity of emptiness, a bad, formal unity, that of a unifier with nothing to unite, for positive unity can be established only through free unification, through true sobornost, or conciliar communion, and not through the coercive discipline of clericalism. Conversely, the new humanist age is multiplicity without unity, a positive all that is still in the process of being ordered: a pluralism that cannot remain definitive but must be brought to unity in thought, feeling, knowledge and life; an individualism that longs to overcome its own disintegrating, atomising influence by trying various forms of external union, a false semblance of true sobornost, but thus far unsuccessfully. For true sobornost, the only possible form of it, a genuine overcoming and not merely a negation of individualism, is nevertheless attainable only in the Church, to which alone the designation ‘one and catholic’ therefore rightfully belongs, and not in the state or in an economic association. The meaning of this historical epoch may therefore be expressed in the following words of Vladimir Soloviev, spoken in his preface to the Critique of Abstract Principles: ‘Great is truth, and it prevails! Divine wisdom in its all-unity can say to all the false principles, which are all her offspring but have become her enemies in their discord, she can say to them with complete assurance: “Go straight along your own paths until you see the abyss before you; then you will renounce your discord and all return, enriched by experience and consciousness, to your common fatherland, where for each of you there is a throne and a crown, for in my Father’s house are many mansions.”’
Most of our contemporaries look down upon the Middle Ages as a past that has been lived through and outlived, overcome from within. Eicken takes this view too, seeing in the modern age the final synthesis and thus the reconciliation of the contradictions posed in history through their inward overcoming, the last, concluding word of history, not in the sense of chronology but in that of fullness and inner completeness. We can in no way share this attitude: the Middle Ages remain a condemned epoch of history, one that has been lived through, but by no means exhausted or overcome, while the ‘modern age’ is by no means this last word of historical development, for its incompleteness, or its limited and conditional character, is already clear to us. More than that, this historical epoch is entirely correlative to the epoch of the Middle Ages and cannot be correctly understood outside this relation, outside the mutual reflection of thesis and antithesis, as we put it above. This awareness of the now apparent relativity and inner limitations of our historical epoch does not yet imply its actual, chronological completion, which comes only when full historical maturity has been attained. The path of humanist culture as an ‘abstract principle’, in Vladimir Soloviev’s sense, must be followed to the end, and its temptations fully lived through and overcome. We must finish constructing this building, even though we already understand that it is not the highest form, not the last word in architecture, but in a certain sense merely historical scaffolding and in part material for the final construction. In historical development every link of the dialectical chain appears equally necessary. One can therefore perform the historical work now at hand while already recognising all the limitations of these historical tasks and discerning the possibility of something entirely different, something new not only quantitatively but qualitatively.
The humanist epoch of humanity’s history instinctively feels this chief weakness of its own, its unconquered multiplicity, the lack of order in its cosmos, and it tries to free itself from it, to establish in its turn something like a humanist theocracy. This endeavour found perfectly clear expression in the religion of humanity preached in the nineteenth century by L. Feuerbach and A. Comte; in the latter the cult of the religion of humanity even assumes the outward appearance of Catholicism. ‘Humanity’ becomes the deified macrocosm for modern man, and he clutches at this semblance of a church with instinctive avidity, if only to free himself from an oppressive loneliness and separation that cannot otherwise be removed. That is why the religion of man-godhood makes such advances precisely in the nineteenth century, as the latest and most mature epoch of humanist culture. This religion takes different forms and in the most recent period is most often combined with socialist theories of progress. The greatest resemblance to ecclesiastical unification, the most deceptive substitute for and semblance of the Church, is found in contemporary socialist catholicism, which, like medieval Catholicism, also lays claim, although with far less right and success, to determine every aspect of its adherents’ lives and to create its own distinctive culture. Yet empirical humanity, as it exists in history in the succession of generations, by no means yet constitutes the real unity attributed to it in the religions of man-godhood: it exists as a whole only in abstraction. Moreover, every attempt to turn it into a deity leads to ineradicable contradictions and sheer absurdities.
Matters are no better with the microcosm, the human person. The humanist epoch is distinguished by the extreme development of individualism: it liberates the person and cherishes the person especially. But in losing the unity of humanity it also loses the absolute core of the person, who is reduced to the level of an empirical fact, a mere knot in the chain of causality. The attempt to exalt natural man outside his relation to the Deity, to turn him into a man-god, encounters, on the one hand, the fact that the man-beast is undoubtedly present in him too, unleashed by this self-exaltation, and, on the other, the danger of transforming the human person no longer into a man-god but simply into a god, or a self-god, into Nietzsche’s ‘overman’ or Max Stirner’s ‘Unique One’, who no longer recognises fellow human beings. The pendulum of modern individualism therefore inevitably swings between base bestiality or philistine vulgarity on one side and, on the other, megalomania that ultimately resolves itself into a cry of historical impotence. One of the chief reasons for this must also be seen in the fact that the age of individualism, of the cult of the person, ultimately has no undisputed ideal of the person, but merely yearns for one. The medieval, ecclesiastical ideal of holiness, largely ascetic, has generally been rejected or lost. Humanity has already outlived for ever the ancient ideal of ‘kalokagathia’, which people sometimes try consciously or unconsciously to restore; humanity cannot erase from its history either the Middle Ages or their vote of no confidence in the world. The immediacy and naivety of the ancient world are lost for ever. Attempts to counterfeit Hellenism produce the same impression as bright rouge applied to an ageing face. The crisis of humanist individualism, the consciousness of its groundlessness, must arrive sooner or later as attempts are made to feel for firm ground, and it has already arrived or is arriving.
In modern times the idea of the state has also acquired exceptional importance; there appears to be a partial revival of its ancient apotheosis. The state seems to represent the only tangible form of universal human unity. Hence the understandable temptation to put an equals sign between the human microcosm and the state: L. Feuerbach, the principal doctrinal teacher of humanist socialism, for example, succumbed to this temptation. In general, modern socialism in essence carries further than any other doctrine the idea that it is precisely the unification of people through the state that brings salvation, for it assigns the state new and complex economic tasks and expects from state regulation of production and economic life the establishment of harmony and peace, and indeed the actual unification of humanity. Yet a crisis of statehood itself is already ripening in contemporary society. Doubt is voiced ever more loudly about the state’s very right to exist, that is, to apply the system of organised coercion that the state necessarily constitutes, and likewise about the state’s capacity to fulfil the tasks prescribed for it. The most recent anarchist movement marks a crisis in the idea of uniting people through the state and saving them by force through the state. If the ideal of compulsory salvation was rejected even when advanced in the name of the Church, in the guise of ‘holy Satanism’, it is all the harder to uphold it now, when it rests only on the actual self-assertion of Leviathan, now without any halo of holiness and justified merely by considerations of practical utility.
The distinguishing trait of the whole of humanist culture is its spiritual fragmentation. Admittedly, this multiplicity expresses its richness and fullness, but also its incompleteness. The Middle Ages held up a single, common sacred ideal, which they sought to stamp upon every branch of culture; the modern age has no such common sacred ideal. It knows many ‘values’, but these are values only for specialists or for specialised domains, which have no connection with one another and may even come into mutual contradiction.
In the Middle Ages the Church established a thoroughly principled attitude, for example, towards economic life, determined by the application to this domain of the ecclesiastical and ascetic ideal. The economic life of the modern age is either subject to the rule of natural instincts, or recognises only its own specialised and by no means undisputed ethical norms, the chief of which is: increase wealth. But since wealth as a means can be put to quite different uses and can therefore serve not only as wings but also as fetters for the human spirit, alongside true culture it gives rise to an ugly, corrosive philistinism or to a repulsive, paganising hedonism. (I call it paganising as distinct from pagan, because, as observed above, sincere and innocent paganism is now impossible.)
In the sphere of spiritual culture the same multiplicity, or the same disarray, is to be observed. Scholarship turns into separate disciplines, into individual specialities, increasingly estranged from one another. In philosophy and art, too, there exist only tendencies that mutually negate and destroy one another. Yet one cannot help thinking that this differentiation and disunity can here be only temporary and transient phenomena. The human spirit thirsts too greatly for unity to reconcile itself easily to its own fragmentation, and the ideal of scholarship and philosophy, integral knowledge, like the ideal of art, integral creation, the artistic transfiguration of the world and life, will not fade in the human soul enlightened by the unifying Logos; at most they can be temporarily eclipsed. For the present, however, all these separated principles go their own ways and must each follow their independent path to the end.
Thus we cannot recognise humanist culture as the highest product of history, as its ripe fruit. What we have in mind here is not the quantitative degree of its development, for it can of course still progress a long way, but the qualitative inadequacy of its very foundations, its existence outside religion, and hence its disunity and groundlessness. Its obscure striving for unity is a striving to affirm in life the religious, divine principle that was rejected along with medieval theocracy. In that theocracy, not only a false and coercive historical form was rejected, but also the profound truth contained within it, if only as a hint: namely that religion, seriously understood and sincerely accepted, cannot and must not reconcile itself to the role of merely one aspect of life, tucked away somewhere in a corner to which accommodating Protestantism relegates it, to the position of a dependent hanger-on of civilisation. No, it must inevitably strive to embrace everything, to encompass and sanctify the whole of life. And formally the Middle Ages were right in posing this task, which they unfortunately tried to solve by unsuitable means that contradicted it, thereby provoking against themselves the reaction of humanism, the triumph of the free human principle they had unjustly oppressed. Full truth is equally absent from medieval theocratism and from modern irreligious humanism. Only the free triumph of the divine principle in free human creativity can be recognised as the ripe fruit of history, as indeed follows from the divine-human character of the historical process. Religious social life, religious culture, inner unity in manifested multiplicity: this is the fruit ripening in history, although perhaps its final ripening lies already beyond history’s bounds, under a ‘new heaven’ and on a ‘new earth’. For the Christian worldview there can be no other philosophy of history.
The process of history unfolding before us grounds and clarifies our hopes for a new religious community, the thirst for which is already beginning to torment people. These new intimations cannot yet take shape and find expression in concrete images, for we are still children of this history, this culture, this social life, this statehood; yet we are already straining towards another life, towards another, immeasurably closer, more intimate and richer communion with people in religious life. This ‘synthesis’ of the Middle Ages and the modern age, the reconciliation of the seemingly irreconcilable, will be given only by the coming rebirth of the Church, in which the contradictions of history will also be resolved. The reborn Church will manifest within itself not only ‘the church as temple, but also the church as humanity, the church as culture, the church as social life’. The fact that such intimations and longings are already beginning to stir people is a clear sign that the humanist epoch, if it has not already approached full maturity, is approaching it.
All human history expresses a single creative thought, is subject to a single plan and constitutes a living whole. This abstract truth, always acknowledged by the mind, is comparatively rarely experienced in immediate feeling. But over Eicken’s book I felt vividly how close to us are both these Middle Ages and all the hoary antiquity that stands behind them; how far both we, with our aspirations, and our future successors upon the historical stage are one with all previous generations; how close to us are the Greeks, these sombre figures of the Middle Ages, and the humanists brimming with joy. And to find myself within this real unity of history, to feel myself its living cell, an atom of the divine-human body, was so joyful to me that a surge of invigorating feelings and uplifting hopes involuntarily rose in my soul.
