Political economy today belongs among the sciences that have forgotten their spiritual kinship. Its beginnings are lost in the shifting sands of eighteenth-century Enlightenment philosophy. At its cradle stand, on the one hand, the representatives of natural-law doctrines, with their belief in the uncorrupted nature of humanity and a pre-established natural harmony; and, on the other, the preachers of utilitarianism, J. Bentham and his disciples, who start from a conception of society as an aggregate of disconnected atoms, mutually repelling representatives of different interests. Society is considered here as a mechanism of these interests; social philosophy turns into the ‘political arithmetic’ whose creation Bentham envisaged. Political economy adopted from him an abstract, one-sided, simplified conception of the human being, which still rules it to a considerable extent. This is how, among other things, classical political economy’s premise of ‘economic man’ (economic man) arose: he neither eats nor sleeps, but is forever calculating interests, seeking the greatest advantage at the least cost; he is a slide rule, responding with mathematical regularity to the external mechanism of distribution and production, which is governed by iron laws of its own. Adam Smith had already based his investigation on a conventional methodological distinction between people’s altruistic and egoistic instincts: he studied the influence of the former in The Theory of Moral Sentiments, under the heading of morality, and that of the latter in The Wealth of Nations, under the heading of political economy. The latter thus began with a fraction instead of a whole. Subsequently, however, Smith’s successors forgot the conventional methodological character of this distinction too. Classical political economy, in the person of Ricardo, accepted Bentham’s doctrine as dogma. Thus there arose the worldview historically known as Manchesterism. The living psychological personality was deleted and replaced by a methodological premise: ‘economic man’. Society became, as it were, a bag of atoms whose mutual movement one had only to refrain from obstructing, while these atoms remained impenetrable to one another. Although socialism constituted something of an antithesis both to the classical school of political economy and to Manchesterism, in its foundations it merely continues Bentham’s spiritual tradition in the persons of Robert Owen in England, Lassalle and especially Marx in Germany, and generally in the most widespread form of materialist conceptions of socialism. It mechanises society and eliminates the living human personality, together with the inseparably associated idea of personal responsibility and creative will, to the same extent as Manchesterism. By way of illustration, let us recall just R. Owen’s doctrine that human character is formed entirely by external circumstances, and that there is consequently no personal responsibility or freedom; yet, starting from this fatalistic conception, and in manifest contradiction with himself, he nevertheless considered it possible in practice to call people to social reforms, appealing to their conscience and their freedom. A similar conception of the personality also underlies economic materialism, and the socialism founded upon it suffers from the same contradictions. In so far as socialism remains spiritually on Manchesterist ground here, it is the same Manchesterism turned inside out, or counter-Manchesterism, with this difference: instead of the isolated individual, a social class is substituted, that is, an aggregate of personalities with a common interest, the same economic man, but collective and class-based rather than individual. Economic categories are like masks concealing a living face, or the buskins of Greek tragedy. They turn people, as it were, into characters in a medieval moralité, wholly personifying only particular qualities. All that is given is a geometrical diagram of human relations, with only the most general outlines and silhouettes sketched in. An example of this peculiar stylisation is provided by Marx’s characterisation of capitalists as representatives of the drive to accumulate:

‘The capitalist has historical significance and a historical right to exist only in so far as he personifies capital; but in so far as he personifies capital ... the stimulus to his activity is not use-values and their enjoyment, but exchange-values and their multiplication. As a fanatic for the creation of new values, paying heed to nothing, he impels humanity towards production for production’s sake, and consequently towards the development of the social productive forces and the creation of the material conditions of production ... In this sense he shares the hoarder’s passion for enrichment for enrichment’s sake, for increasing value. But what in the one is an individual mania is in the other the result of the operation of a mechanism in which he represents one of the wheels ... At the beginning of the capitalist mode of production, the only passions are the drive to enrichment and avarice ... At a certain level of development, a conventional degree of extravagance, serving at the same time to display wealth and therefore useful for obtaining credit, becomes a business necessity for the capitalist ... But at its foundation lie sordid miserliness and anxious calculation ... Accumulate, accumulate! That is Moses and the prophets! Accumulation for accumulation’s sake, production for production’s sake.’

Similar masks are also placed over the faces of workers, who are transformed without distinction into abstract ‘proletarians of all countries’ and, in this stylised representation, inspired only by a savage hatred of capital. Recall that classic passage in Capital which depicts the final scene of the capitalist drama, with what seem to be iron masks as its actors.

‘Along with the constantly diminishing number of magnates of capital, who usurp and monopolise all the advantages of this process of transformation, poverty, oppression, enslavement, humiliation and exploitation increase; but at the same time the revolt of the working class also grows, a class that constantly increases and is constantly trained, united and organised by the very mechanism of the capitalist process of production. The monopoly of capital becomes an obstacle to the mode of production that developed along with it and under its influence. The concentration of the means of production and the socialisation of labour reach a point at which they can no longer endure their capitalist shell. It bursts. The hour of capitalist private property strikes. The expropriators are expropriated.’

What Marxist did not know these lapidary lines by heart and repeat them with a beating heart! And yet nowhere has Benthamite stylisation, the simplification of actual life that effaces all its colours, been carried so far as here.

Generally speaking, such a procedure in political economy is both right and wrong: it is right and permissible as a methodological convention, as a device of artificial simplification for the purposes of investigation. Here political economy does what every science does: to learn something, it forgets everything else and acts, as the present expression has it, ‘pragmatically’. Error begins only when the wholly conventional nature of this procedure is forgotten, when ‘pragmatic’ stylisation is taken for genuine reality and these methodological phantoms are substituted for living people. This partly explains the predominance of that peculiar economism which poisons the spiritual atmosphere of the nineteenth century. An equals sign is placed between ‘economic man’, a convention of political economy, and the human being in general; whatever will not fit the prescribed frame is either cut down or forcibly squeezed into it. Naturally, everything individual and concrete that resists this is mercilessly destroyed in the process. Yet we must never forget that political economy is a historical science, that is, a science of the historical and therefore of the concrete, and that what ‘theoretical’ economics permits itself solely for the purposes of simplification by no means corresponds to living historical reality, or, more precisely, corresponds to it only in part. In reality, political economy’s ‘economic man’ is only one, albeit a very important, aspect of the life of the human personality, of the manifestations of the active ‘I’. The national economy is the result of the individual activity of personalities; the development of productive forces is the people’s creativity in the economic sphere, and to a certain extent is also a phenomenon of its spiritual life. Adam Smith once made the unfortunate distinction between productive and unproductive labour, calling labour productive, in the economic sense, when it finds direct expression in material goods, in ‘things’, and calling every other kind of labour unproductive. With this distinction, likewise merely methodological, he drew a deep and wholly illegitimate boundary separating economic and spiritual activity; despite its wholly conventional character, this distinction still confounds economic thought, which already suffers from an excessive mechanisation of the economy. Of course, it cannot be denied that the economy is also a mechanism, particularly the modern national and world economy. But at the same time it is not, and can never be, merely a mechanism, just as the personality is not merely a slide rule of interests, but a living creative principle. Starting from the conception of mechanism alone, one cannot even fully understand economic life. Without personal initiative, a creative approach to it and various impulses of the will, neither routine alone nor self-interest alone can even maintain the economic status quo, still less secure economic progress, which is necessary if only because of the continual growth of population, with its Malthusian threat. The human personality is an independent ‘factor’ in the economy: in some branches of labour this is clearer, as in agriculture, for example; in others, such as industry, it is less evident, but it is a fact. Economic life is the interaction of freedom, the personality’s creative initiative, and mechanism, iron necessity; it is the personality’s struggle with the mechanism of nature and of social forms, with the aim of adapting them to the needs of the human spirit. In a word, an economy is run by a person in charge of it. Here we come to the subject of the present essay. Various motives, both self-interested and ideal, combine in the human soul, and political economy must by no means exclude motives of the second kind from its attention. In identifying motives of this kind, ideal values must also be taken into account, including such factors as a general worldview and religion. Religion, as a factor of economic development in so far as it is a factor in the formation of the personality, is thus brought within the study of economic life. Until recently, the dependence of economic life on factors of a religious order has been very inadequately studied, owing to the predominance of economism in scholarship. It may be said that scholarly attention to these questions has only recently begun to awaken. For the historian of economic life and economic ideas, and no less for the religious philosopher, this subject is a most enticing one. From this point of view, a world of its own is presented by the history of countries permeated by Buddhism, with its retarding and oppressive influence on every aspect of life, and in particular on human economic activity. The question of the connection between the economic stagnation and caste structure of the countries of the East and Buddhism is therefore a subject for a quite separate investigation. Similarly, the ancient world’s attitude towards economic labour, in so far as it was determined by a general religious and philosophical attitude towards the world alongside social causes, should also be a subject of great scholarly interest. A new, European attitude towards economic labour is brought into history by Christianity, and in this sense it is precisely within Christianity that both the national economy and the science of the national economy have their potential beginnings. A further turning point in this development within Western Christianity is introduced by the Reformation, and modern scholarship has long sought to understand and assess its significance. Finally, the prevailing temper of modern times, with its economic materialism and mechanical worldview, is also a factor in economic life that influences its character. We shall grasp the core of our question by attending to the different motivations for human labour. Economic labour can be performed exclusively under the pressure of necessity, as labour in the ‘sweat of one’s brow’ to obtain sustenance; but this alone seldom exhausts a person’s attitude towards their work. Labour is not merely an enforced burden: in most cases it also includes a certain ethical element, and can be regarded as the fulfilment of religious or moral duties. In connection with religious conceptions, labour, though performed in the ‘sweat of one’s brow’, is imprinted, for example, on the consciousness of the Russian peasantry as a particular religious practice. This is so in so far as one can judge from various studies, including the collection of agricultural sayings and traditional signs expressing our peasantry’s worldview which we find in Yermolov’s four-volume work. A religious and moral attitude to labour is characteristic in general of epochs dominated by a religious worldview. Labour then forms part of an overall system of ascetic practice. Asceticism in its practical meaning is an attitude towards the world connected with the recognition of higher, supramundane, transcendent values; particular judgements of value are established in relation to these values. This attitude takes one beyond the immediate, immanent given reality of this world. But precisely by virtue of what is, as it were, its negation of the world, it can become, and at a certain degree of intensity even inevitably proves to be, world-conquering, as indeed does every profound idealistic enthusiasm. A contemporary German scholar justly observes:

‘Asceticism in itself is not solely mortification of the flesh and dualistic contemplation, but also positive work for the benefit of the whole, a means in the service of the Corpus Christianum, and, when religious feeling is unleashed (Entfesselung), at the same time an emotional, aesthetic transfiguration of the world. Such asceticism did not hinder, and could not have hindered, the development of culture.’

Asceticism distinguishes the so-called ‘medieval’ and ‘monastic’ worldview. In its attitude towards economic labour, asceticism receives its most expressive formulation in the monastic practice of both Western and Eastern Christianity: labour is generally regarded here as a means of ascetic exercise, as an obedience whose significance and value lie, at least in part, outside the labour process itself.

Let us give a few examples. St Benedict called idleness ‘the enemy of the soul’, and ‘therefore you must engage in manual work at appointed times’. Pope Gregory the Great says: ‘If anyone wishes to attain the firm value of contemplation, he must first practise in the field of work.’ Bernard of Clairvaux judges as follows: ‘She who serves Christ must always pray, read or work, lest the spirit of temptation unexpectedly seize an idle mind. Sensual desires are overcome by labour. When you stop reading, you must work, so that you never remain idle, for idleness is the enemy of the soul.’ Guigo, the Carthusian prior, says: ‘A serious, prudent character is always ready for work. It does not become distracted through work but, on the contrary, becomes concentrated, since it always keeps in view not so much the work itself as the goal for which it works, namely the attainment of the highest perfection.’

The foremost medieval authority of Western Christianity, Thomas Aquinas, takes the same view. It was in the atmosphere of the medieval monastery that the formula so beloved of Carlyle arose: laborare est orare, that is, work corresponds in a certain respect to prayer. To characterise Eastern monasticism in this regard, let us quote the judgement of St Theodore the Studite, whose rule acquired guiding authority for Eastern monasteries (Philokalia, IV, 27):

‘All of you,’ he exhorts the brethren, ‘are under obedience to one another, like living members of one body. If the eye does not guide the hands, if one hand does not support the other, if the foot does not walk as the good of the whole body requires, if, in general, each member begins to act according to its own will, then not only will they fail to preserve their own strength, but, by disordering themselves, they will disorder the entire body. Therefore let everyone rejoice when he has occasion to work a little harder for others, enduring cold, rain and heat ... We do not shed blood as martyrs do; our limbs are not cut off, our bones are not broken; but if to our light and few labours we add the renunciation of our own will, with the desire to please and to serve our brothers with love, then through this we become like the much-suffering martyrs and even like the Lord Himself, who underwent crucifixion and death for us. Take heart, then, and labour!’

Thanks to this outlook, which determined their entire way of life, monasteries were, and in so far as they do not betray their calling remain even now, above all schools of labour, where, in the words of one Western monk, ‘everyone must be his own ox’. The lives of the saints of both the Eastern and Western Churches provide numerous testimonies to the educational significance of monasteries in this regard; one need only recall the place occupied by labour in the life of the Venerable Sergius.

Thanks to the ascetic discipline of labour, monasteries played an enormous part in Europe’s economic development during those epochs when the colonisation and cultivation of wild areas involved particular difficulties. In so far as the present stands on the shoulders of the past, it may be said in general that our present economic life, our national economy, rests, as upon its foundation, on the ascetic labour of monastic medieval Europe.

‘The monks contributed very greatly to clearing the vast and dense forests that covered central and northern Europe, and to turning the primeval forest and marshland into fertile arable fields and meadows. They were particularly engaged in cultivating gardens and vegetable plots ... They transformed the banks of the Seine, the valleys of the Rhône and the Moselle, and the deserted areas of Normandy into gardens and vineyards. Thus the strictest ascetics were at the same time the most industrious workers.’

Let us speak of the corresponding significance of Russian monasteries in the history of Russian colonisation in the words of Professor Klyuchevsky:

‘Three-quarters of the wilderness monasteries of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries were such agricultural colonies, formed when their founders moved out of other monasteries, for the most part also situated in the wilderness. A wilderness monastery cultivated a particular disposition in its brotherhood, at least among its most receptive members; a particular view of the tasks of the monastic life took shape. Its founder had once gone into the forest to find salvation in silent solitude, convinced that this was impossible in the world, amid the clamour of human life. Others seeking the same silence gathered around him and established a hermitage. The strictness of their life and the fame of their ascetic feats attracted from afar not only pilgrims and donors, but also peasants, who settled around the very wealthy monastery as their religious and economic support, felled the surrounding forest, built villages, cleared fields and “spoiled the wilderness”, in the expression of the Life of the Venerable Sergius of Radonezh. Here monastic colonisation met peasant colonisation and served as its unwitting guide. Thus, on the site of a hermit’s solitary hut, there grew up a populous, wealthy and noisy monastery. But among the brethren there was often a disciple of the founder who was oppressed by this unmonastic noise and wealth: faithful to his teacher’s spirit and tradition, and with that teacher’s blessing, he left him for an untouched wilderness, where a new forest monastery arose in the same way. Sometimes the founder himself did this, even more than once, abandoning his monastery to repeat his former experience in a new forest. Thus,’ Professor Klyuchevsky concludes, ‘out of isolated, disconnected local phenomena there arose a broad movement of colonisation which, proceeding from several centres, penetrated over four centuries into the most inaccessible backwaters and dotted the vast forest wildernesses of central and northern Russia with monasteries.’

Turning to modern capitalism, we must say that the influence of the iron mechanism is, of course, far more palpable here than in the simpler forms of a subsistence economy with little exchange. But capitalism too presupposes a distinctive psychology of its own. Modern capitalism is also connected with a particular capitalist spirit corresponding to this complex economic mechanism. Sombart considers the principal feature of this capitalist spirit to be economic rationalism, the methodical application of means to an end. Today we observe this rationalism of economic life in an already developed form. But how did it develop, what originally lay at its foundation, and what are the spiritual preconditions of this capitalist spirit and, to a certain extent, of capitalism itself? In its outward appearance, capitalist rationalism most closely resembles the classical school’s ‘economic man’; but does this ‘economic man’ derive from Bentham and political arithmetic, or does he have an entirely different genealogy? Several scholarly investigations have been devoted to this question in recent years. Foremost among them must be placed Professor Max Weber’s major studies: ‘Die protestantische Ethik und der Geist des Kapitalismus’ (The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism). Professor Schulze-Gaevernitz’s latest work was written under the influence of these studies.

In these studies, the genesis of the spirit of capitalism is connected with the spirit of Protestantism and Protestant asceticism. The roots of the modern national economy are discovered not only in the economic needs of our epoch, but also in the spiritual life of human personalities. A particularly important part in this genesis is played by certain currents of the Reformation, above all Calvinism in England, where it took the form of Puritanism. The essential peculiarity of England’s modern history is that the Reformation merges here with revolution, and the principal achievements of the movement for liberation, as well as its ideas, particularly those of the rights of man and the citizen and of freedom of conscience and speech, are inseparably connected with the religious movement of the Reformation. But England’s economic fortunes are also connected with it. The origins of English capitalism are related not only to the enclosure of fields and the Industrial Revolution, but also to the spirit of Puritanism. As is well known, Calvin himself, the ‘Protestant pope’, as his contemporaries called him, contributed considerably to the republic’s economic prosperity during his rule in Geneva. Montesquieu remarks in The Spirit of the Laws that ‘the English surpass all the peoples of the world in three important things: piety, trade and freedom’, thus linking these three traits inseparably. And indeed, the connection between Calvinist piety, mercantile enterprise and love of liberty is noted everywhere in England’s history. The economic historian Gothein observes:

‘Anyone looking for traces of capitalist development, in whatever European country, will always encounter one and the same fact: the Calvinist diaspora is at the same time a nursery of capitalist economic life. The Spaniards expressed this with bitter reflection in the following formula: heresy promotes the commercial spirit.’

What, then, is this inner connection that history establishes between capitalism and Calvinism? It is as follows. An essential characteristic of the ‘spirit’ of capitalism is that the ‘ideal’ capitalist considers himself under an obligation towards his property and regards its increase through productive expenditure as his duty; the highest good in capitalist ethics consists in the increase of wealth considered as an end in itself. It is the distinctive idea in capitalist ethics of a vocational duty towards property that establishes this particular capitalist spirit, without which modern capitalism would have been impossible, just as it was, for example, psychologically, and not only economically, impossible in the depths of the Middle Ages. Its origin is therefore connected not only with a series of objective economic and partly technological changes, but also with a new direction of creative initiative and personal energy. Industrial innovators ordinarily come under attack: legends, sometimes of a terrifying kind, form around their names, and relatively less notice is taken of how important strength of character and exceptional self-control, in a word, particular personal ethical qualities, actually are to the formation of these types. These traits are being lost to a considerable extent by the representatives of the latest capitalism, who are often guided either by crudely self-interested concerns or simply by habit, care for their families and the like. The ideal capitalist, however, has little in common with such types, or with the sons who squander what their fathers accumulated; his character also has certain ascetic traits. The German word ‘Beruf’, and still more the English ‘calling’, has a religious colouring, signifying a religious vocation to a given secular occupation. By contrast, the Latin Catholic peoples, as well as the Russian people and classical antiquity, have no corresponding word of the kind found among all Protestant peoples. In its present usage, this word is borrowed from Luther’s translation of the Bible. The concept ‘Beruf’ expresses the central dogma of all Protestant confessions. In contrast to medieval Catholicism, Protestantism starts from the abolition in principle of the opposition between the ecclesiastical and the secular or worldly: worldly pursuits, civil occupations and activity in the home, in a business or in an office are regarded as the fulfilment of religious duties, whose sphere is thus extended to every kind of worldly activity. At the same time, it proclaims the autonomy of worldly life and seeks to remove this life from the influence of the Church, that is, of the papal hierocracy. This expresses the Protestant secularisation of Christianity, accompanied, however, by the ethical shaping of worldly life on religious grounds. Those Protestant sects in which these ideals of a religious and ascetic regulation of worldly life were particularly strong also play the largest part in the history of capitalism and the formation of the capitalist spirit: Calvinism within the Reformed tradition, Pietism within Lutheranism, Methodism within Anglicanism and, finally, among the sects that grew on the soil of Anabaptism, Quakerism. The greatest importance in the history of capitalism belongs to Calvinism, especially in its British form, Puritanism. Why did it acquire such importance here? We know that Calvinism’s fundamental dogma was the doctrine of predestination: by an eternal act of the Divine will, utterly incomprehensible to us, some are predestined to eternal perdition and others to salvation. This fatalistic doctrine would seem to have been bound to paralyse the will and personal responsibility completely; yet, in practical application, these dogmas proved, on the contrary, to be most conducive to the formation of character and personal energy. In the disposition of people brought up on this teaching, it was bound to manifest itself above all in ‘a feeling of unheard-of inner solitude of the separate individual’ (M. Weber, l. c., 11), producing an individualism free of all illusions and coloured by pessimism: everyone within themselves and for themselves; people are divided from one another as if by a glass partition, transparent yet impenetrable, by the act of eternal election. The state of being elect cannot be determined by any outward or inward signs, nor can it be attained by anything; yet it is expressed in certain traits of conduct. Everyone must consider themselves elect, in the absence of any possibility of proving the contrary, and doubt itself must be driven away as a diabolical delusion. The state of election can be tested only by watching one’s conduct, by unremitting self-control, by constantly ‘taking one’s own pulse’; a methodical discipline of life, expressed above all in ceaseless vocational labour, is the first practical conclusion from Calvinist teaching. The God of Calvinism demands that He be glorified in the world through a holy life: everyday life must be methodically determined by ascetic discipline. What was considered obligatory only for monks and in monasteries is put forward here as a general requirement, and moreover applied to worldly vocational life. Those passionate, serious and concentrated natures that formerly furnished monasticism with its finest representatives remain, in Calvinism, in the world and actively express themselves within it. In this idea of the need to confirm one’s faith in a secular occupation, Calvinism provided a positive motive for that occupation’s development and linked practical ethics to the doctrine of predestination. In place of a spiritual aristocracy outside and above the world, it put forward a spiritual aristocracy of those chosen by God, saints in the world from all eternity. A similar character of secular monasticism or worldly asceticism distinguishes, though to a lesser degree, Pietism, Methodism and, especially, Quakerism, which played so outstanding a part in the social and political history of England and the United States (W. Penn). The brevity of this essay does not permit us to dwell on the particular features of these teachings.

All these sects share the characteristic that they require an ascetic style of life from their members. As Weber says of them, ‘Christian asceticism entered the marketplace of life, shut the monastery doors behind it, and began to permeate precisely worldly, everyday life with its method, with the aim of transforming it into a rational life in the world, yet at the same time not of this world, or not for this world’. Hence the constant, passionate preaching of strenuous physical and spiritual labour, both as an ascetic means and as an end in itself. And it is precisely not labour in itself, but rational, methodically regulated vocational labour that is required here of the individual. Among the signs of the usefulness of an undertaking or occupation, and even of its being pleasing to God, is its profitability.

‘If God shows you a way,’ says the Puritan preacher Baxter, ‘in which you can lawfully earn more than in another way, without harm to your soul or to others, and you reject it and choose a less profitable way, then you strike out one of the purposes of your vocation (calling); you refuse to be God’s managers (steward) and to receive His gifts so as to be able to use them for Him if He wishes. Certainly you must work to become rich not for the sake of carnal pleasure or sin, but for God’ (Baxter, I, 378, quoted in Weber).

To wish to be poor, as was often argued in these circles, is the same as wishing to be ill. Thus there developed the view that God blesses trade (God blesseth the trade); and the Old Testament cast of mind generally characteristic of Puritanism was also connected with the ancient Hebrew conception of the reward for virtue in this life. The Puritans’ favourite book therefore became the Book of Job, in which Jehovah is so fearsome and commanding, but which also points to the righteous man’s final reward, still here on earth, although, of course, for us today this ending in the Book of Job is merely a secondary detail. Particular emphasis in the Old Testament was placed upon passages concerning formal honesty; it was not for nothing that Puritanism was often called English Hebraism (Englisch Hebraism), with reference to its assimilation of the Old Testament spirit, with its self-righteousness and sober lawfulness.

In Puritanism there also awoke with tremendous force the belief, characteristic of Jewish messianism, that the Anglo-Saxons are God’s chosen people, called to rule over other peoples for the sake of those peoples’ own salvation and enlightenment. This constitutes, among other things, the spiritual foundation of English mercantilism, which apart from this conviction bears the traits of unashamed national egoism. Cromwell and his ‘saints’ were imbued with it, and this heightened national self-consciousness, whose roots reach back to the Reformation and especially to Puritanism, distinguishes England at the present time. As Professor Schulze-Gaevernitz aptly remarks, even now

‘the merchant sitting at his desk occupies the place to which God has appointed him in particular, and no one else; he can feel himself to be a small yet important wheel in the marvellous economic cosmos. The same merchant at his desk also serves the interests of British power: if he engages in maritime trade, he lays the foundation for the English navy in defence of Protestantism.’

Thus Puritan asceticism proves to be not only an economic but also a political virtue. Of particular significance for the origin of the capitalist spirit is its characteristic of encouraging the motives that impel accumulation while restraining consumption. In Puritanism, the permission to enjoy purely aesthetic or even sporting pleasures always has one limit: it must cost nothing. A person is merely the manager of goods entrusted to him by God’s mercy: like the wicked servant in the Bible, he must account for every penny. The idea that a person has duties towards the property entrusted to him, to which he is subordinated as a managerial servant or as a machine for acquisition (Erwerbmaschine), bears down upon life with all its chilling weight. The greater the property, the heavier the sense of responsibility for it, for preserving it to God’s glory and increasing it further through uninterrupted work. Gradually there develops the businesslike capitalist fetishism so familiar to us today. Worldly Protestant asceticism, to summarise all that has been said above, works with all its force against the carefree enjoyment of property and restrains consumption, especially of luxuries; it frees accumulation from the obstacles presented by traditional ethics, breaking the ascetic fetters on accumulation in the name of asceticism itself, not only legitimising the drive to enrichment but regarding it outright as a work pleasing to God, ad majorem Dei gloriam [to the greater glory of God]. Thus Puritan asceticism stands at the cradle of the modern ‘economic man’ who operates on the stock exchange and in the marketplace. The seventeenth-century epoch bequeathed to its utilitarian successor, above all, an extraordinarily tranquil, indeed, we may boldly say, a pharisaically tranquil conscience in making money, provided only that this is done in a legal form. A specifically bourgeois vocational ethic arises. Through the power of religious asceticism, there were trained for the bourgeois entrepreneur sober, conscientious workers with an exceptional capacity for work, attached to labour as a God-pleasing purpose in life and conscious of their responsibility towards them: the fathers of the modern ‘proletariat’.

‘The Puritan wanted to be a man of a calling,’ Weber concludes; ‘we have to be one.’ The economic cosmos now needs no props: coercively, even without particular inner motives or justification, it compels submission to that division of labour and that feverish activity which often takes on the character of an irresistible passion and sport. Yet even today the new colossal edifice rests on its old foundation.

‘From the school of Puritanism,’ Schulze-Gaevernitz observes, ‘the Anglo-Saxon world acquired sexual, national and social discipline, which forms a counterweight to the capitalist spirit. England attained supremacy in part because it surpassed its competitors in the purity of family life, readiness to make sacrifices out of love for the fatherland, and a sense of social responsibility. The superiority of the Anglo-Saxon type is founded upon capitalist, sexual, national and social discipline’ (l. c., pp. 46–47).

Awareness of the Puritan conception of entrepreneurial duty has not entirely died out even today among the contemporary representatives of Anglo-Saxon capitalism.

Such are the general conclusions of recent investigators of the early history of capitalism. One cannot but regret that research of this kind is almost entirely lacking in relation to Russian economic life, and in particular the history of Russian industry. ‘Economism’, equally characteristic of both our populism and our neo-Marxism, did not encourage the study of the spiritual factors of economic development. Material for such investigations would, one would suppose, be found in abundance in family archives and in historical and statistical data. Studies of the history of Russian industry in connection with the spiritual biographies and entire circumstances of everyday life of Russian pioneering entrepreneurs would reveal the religious and ethical foundations of the psychology of Russian industry. There is, for example, the well-known, especially close connection of Russian capitalism with the Old Belief, to which representatives of a whole series of the largest Russian firms belong. Clarifying the nature of this connection, and generally studying the influence of confessional differences on economic life, would be most interesting. It seems to me, however, that one may establish in advance that the connection between religious consciousness and economic activity must be related not only to a particular body of dogma, but still more to religion’s practical implications, and especially to the demands it makes at a given historical moment. What matters here is the manner in which its spirit penetrates life and exerts its direct influence, the degree, so to speak, of the religious and ascetic attitude towards life. Of great importance here, of course, is also the external position of a particular confession: persecution and harassment, by weeding out the weak, develop steadfastness and integrity of character, which manifest themselves in all spheres of life, including the economic sphere. Conversely, a privileged external position, the incorporation of the Church into the state, weakens the religious factor’s influence on life, even irrespective of the particular doctrine, at least in intensity if not in extent. It would be especially interesting to investigate specifically Orthodoxy’s economic potential, but this would require an extensive religious, philosophical and historical excursus taking us far beyond the bounds of this essay. Although radically different in its attitude towards the world from Puritanism and Protestantism in general, Orthodoxy, in its discipline of ascetic ‘obedience’ and ‘walking before God’, possesses powerful means of educating the personality and developing a sense of personal responsibility and duty, so essential to economic activity as to every other form of social service. The same is true of the Old Belief, which does not differ from it dogmatically. And if the influence of Orthodoxy’s religious discipline on the Russian people’s economic creativity is now becoming less and less perceptible, and often proves weaker than that of religious dissent, this provides further evidence of Orthodoxy’s lamentable decline at the present historical moment. Such, incidentally, is in part the fate of all ‘broad churches’, with their numerous and varied membership, compared with small but inspired sects.

At present, as indeed always, two attitudes towards the world in general and economic life in particular struggle with one another: the mechanical-utilitarian and the religious. In the first, various interests and their struggle are brought to the fore, while the element of awareness of duties and of social service remains comparatively in the shadows; in the second, awareness of duties is emphasised, and an understanding of social life itself as a system of mutual duties is affirmed. In the nineteenth century these two worldviews received sharply differentiated expression in various social thinkers and various socio-economic systems. The nineteenth century produced Bentham, R. Owen and Marx on the one side, but alongside them also Carlyle, Ruskin, Morris, Kingsley, Tolstoy and Vladimir Solovyov ... In particular, on the question of economic life and entrepreneurial activity, alongside the doctrine of class struggle as a universal, all-embracing principle of explanation, we have the doctrine of class duties and class service, expressed especially vividly in Carlyle’s and Ruskin’s ideas about ‘leaders of industry’. Carlyle, as we know, wants to see entrepreneurs as duty-conscious ‘captains of industry’, rather than self-interested servants of accumulation. These two outlooks struggle in life too, and in so far as ideas, public opinion and the general spiritual atmosphere influence the human personality at all, the predominance of one outlook or the other influences economic life. The dominance of utilitarianism and the decline of the personality threaten to undermine economic development, as people are already beginning to fear in relation to England, and still more in relation to France, with its economic stagnation. The national economy requires the spiritual health of the people. In Russian society, among the intelligentsia, the development of productive forces, an expression so often repeated by Marxists, is as yet very inadequately appreciated as a distinctive religious and ethical task, as a form of social service. Our views of economic life, especially of the course of industrial development, are dominated by an extreme Benthamism in one form or another, most often its Marxist variety, and the fiction of ‘economic man’ is accepted without analysis or criticism. Predominant attention is concentrated on distribution, understood as the outcome of competition and class struggle; there is comparatively less awareness of the significance of developing the productive forces as a creative task, of the growth of the entire national economy as the combined efforts of human wills.

This attitude found particularly characteristic expression in the way the question of agrarian reform was posed and resolved in our country. As is evident from all the statistical and economic data, the agrarian question is first and foremost a question of developing productive forces, and only in the second and relatively subordinate instance one of redistributing land. Yet in our social consciousness, only very recently, it was transformed with extraordinary speed and ease into a question of a general redistribution and the abolition of private ownership of land. Despite all its socialist exaltation, the development of productive forces, and of the effectiveness of productive labour in general, is in fact far from adequately appreciated in our social consciousness and meets with an arrogant, disdainful attitude. The aspiration to develop production and creative initiative in this sphere are all too often considered here exclusively from the standpoint of class Benthamism, as ‘bourgeois money-grubbing’, the pursuit of gain; conversely, the professions of the intelligentsia, whatever their degree of dependence on industry, on ‘capital’, be they law, literature, technology and so forth, are ordinarily judged by an entirely different standard, as something higher, idealistic and more worthy. In our society’s consciousness, the development of new branches of labour appears an undertaking of a far lower order than all manner of intellectual professions. This prejudice has real harmful consequences: the predominance of such judgements in public opinion morally corners representatives of industry and demoralises them, degrading them in public opinion and condemning them in advance; thereby, as it were, it pre-emptively removes moral responsibility from the leaders of industry and subjects them to a moral and social boycott. The whole constituted by the nation and its economy is thereby hopelessly split into different social classes separated from one another by impenetrable partitions. We must understand that the fate of our industry, like that of agriculture, and in general the entire development of the productive forces, for which capital is a necessary means, is our own vital concern as a people, in which the entire nation has a stake. Benthamism, whether in its original or its later form, that is, Marxism, proves exceptionally unsuitable for the social education of working people too. Although a capitalist economy is inseparably connected with the antagonism of social classes representing different aspects and interests of production, it is dangerous and harmful to reduce all social relations to the production process alone and to construct them solely upon this antagonism, upon centrifugal forces, forgetting the centripetal ones. Every class has its place in the production process, its duties and its social responsibility, from which it cannot and must not release itself in the name of its interests. It is awareness of social duties, rather than of interests, that educates people in citizenship; and in the educational sense, if its influence on the working masses becomes deep, Benthamism proves, in purely economic terms, to be a disintegrating and harmful principle in so far as it affects individuals’ attitudes towards their duties and destroys the ethical self-discipline that underlies every kind of vocational labour, for awareness of interests alone is insufficient for the self-discipline of the personality. Meanwhile, by the force of circumstances, the demands that economic life places upon the personality, above all as a ‘factor of production’, continually increase. The social progress of our time is inseparably connected with the growth of the personality, and consequently with an increase in personal responsibility and self-discipline. What political economy describes as the transition from an economy of low wages to an economy of high wages, that is, the increase in the productivity and intensity of labour which economically justifies higher wages, is inseparably connected with the self-discipline of those who work. But this discipline cannot be realised on the basis of bare interests alone: it presupposes recognition of higher ethical and ultimately religious values, of moral duties in the sphere of vocational labour. And, of course, in the direct experience of life, rather than in Benthamite theory, which effaces every distinction between the conscientious and the unconscientious, the capable and the incapable worker in every branch of labour. Benthamism seeks to heighten awareness of one’s particular interests, an awareness entirely legitimate, natural and ineradicable while class antagonism exists, making it the subject of a special and fervent preaching. When it goes beyond its legitimate limits and becomes the exclusive, determining principle that Benthamism wishes to make it, it becomes a factor that lowers the moral qualities of working people, retards the development of productive forces and intensifies social hostility, while at the same time lacking creative powers. And this education of the personality in the spirit of Benthamism, this cult of one’s own interests, whether those of capitalists or workers, is mistaken even from a socialist point of view. If socialism wishes to be a genuinely higher form of economy, one that does not lose what has already been achieved but is capable of developing the productive forces further, it can tolerate Benthamism still less; on the contrary, it requires a degree of personal responsibility and self-discipline that cannot be realised in the name of personal interests alone, but presupposes a high ethical culture.

Historical research, freeing thought from oppressive prejudice and one-sidedness, increasingly reveals the psychological roots of economic activity and clarifies the economic significance of the religious foundations by which the living human soul is determined. In the particular example we have considered, the question of the origin of the capitalist spirit, we can see most clearly how psychologically complex is the origin of ‘economic man’, whom political economy takes to be something simple, elementary and irreducible. This phantom of ‘economic man’ dissolves in the light of historical research. We need to free ourselves from many ideological phantoms, including ‘economic man’. We need to understand that economic activity too can be social service and the fulfilment of moral duty, and that only with such an attitude to it, and with society educated to understand it in this way, is the most favourable spiritual atmosphere created both for the development of production and for reforms in distribution, for economic and social progress. A resilient will and a keen eye are now too rarely encountered in our educated society; and owing to this low quality of the human personality, together, of course, with other external causes, Russia is undergoing a slow but certain and inevitable economic conquest by foreigners, if everything remains unchanged. To rise higher in the field of strenuous economic competition, we need, among other conditions, a different evaluation of economic activity from the intelligentsia’s disdain or a lordly, condescending attitude towards this prose of life. Russian renewal also requires national self-education, including, as one of its practical implications, a healthier, more sober and, I would add, more honest attitude towards the development of productive forces. There appears to be a lively interest in economic questions in our society. Russia’s economic needs are so obvious and pressing that they require no explanation; nevertheless, proper evaluations of economic activity and an understanding of the development of productive forces as a common national undertaking are still insufficient in our society. Public opinion belongs among the imponderable, spiritual factors of historical development and economic life; especially when comparing it with the so palpable influence of the iron economic mechanism of the world market, one might come to deny it altogether or to disregard it completely. Yet even modern natural science sometimes recognises imponderable forces as the most powerful; and public opinion, particularly the beliefs and convictions that guide it, is likewise an imponderable but real and powerful factor of economic development. For, let us repeat once more, the national economy is not only a mechanism but also the active work of human personalities, and social life is not only class struggle but also a complex system of mutual duties among these classes. And if the personality, which plays a part as a factor of economic development, develops under the determining influence of its ethical and religious convictions, then the particular religious self-determination of the personality, and religion in general, as something that influences every sphere of life, also belong among the important factors in the development of the national economy. Therefore, in pursuing the aim of Russia’s economic recovery and renewal, we must not forget its spiritual preconditions either, specifically the formation of a corresponding economic psychology, which can result only from society’s self-education.
