On the historical study of Christianity. — The purpose of this essay
Thought dwells with love and reverent curiosity on the earliest days of Christianity. At its historical cradle stands a long and ever-growing succession of scholars and thinkers, bringing here the fruits of their labour, reflection and observation. They seek to fix in memory every feature, even the smallest, that can be established concerning the history of early Christianity. Methods of study are refined to the point of virtuosity. They wish, as far as possible, to know and describe every stone of the holy land, to study its historical topography in detail, investigating for this purpose also the world that extended beyond its borders and surrounded it. Our rationalistic and unbelieving age, in the person of the most rationalistically minded Western, chiefly German, historical scholarship, is erecting, and in part has already erected, a massive monument to its piety, to its love for Christianity, shown in deed rather than word. It is heartening to think that this historical work, attracting scholars of the first rank, is in full swing and that precisely now, in the closing years of our decade, it seems to be becoming still more fruitful and acquiring still greater scope. Classical philology and epigraphy, history and archaeology, the history of religions and Oriental linguistics are working together to shed new light on the historical setting of early Christianity. In the most recent period, excavations in Egypt and elsewhere have brought to light, on scraps of papyrus, on potsherds, on metal and stone, new materials that still await fuller investigation but have already yielded some valuable results. The study of Eastern religions, developing so successfully precisely in recent years and raising a series of new questions about the interrelations of Judaism, Christianity and the mysterious East from which the Chaldean stargazers came to worship the Divine Infant, casts yet another light on the same question. As a result, despite the scantiness and fragmentary character of the materials and the inadequacy of direct sources, the historical epoch of early Christianity is acquiring ever more concrete outlines, drawing nearer to our sight out of the misty distance of historical perspective and schematic stylisation. If little new can be learned about early Christianity itself beyond what we possess in the New Testament books and the scant surviving writings of ancient Christianity, and what can be gleaned from their comprehensive study (although here too recent decades can boast of certain discoveries), the historical environment in which early Christianity was born and developed is nevertheless becoming more intelligible. A rich historical background is being created, against which individual features of the picture already known to us stand out afresh. I know that in certain circles there is distrust of this historical work, supposedly because its results are destructive of faith; the opinions of many of its practitioners give grounds for such apprehension (although even here one cannot fail to note recently a certain, if slow, turn among representatives of the critical tendency towards a return to Church tradition, brought about by the development of scholarship itself). I do not share this attitude towards historical investigation, so far as it remains within the bounds of rigorous scholarship. Certainly, if one is to regard some of the results of this investigation without disturbance to one's faith, one must abandon once and for all the view that the whole non-Christian world is condemned to nothing but the darkness of error and that its entire history is a senseless wandering in that darkness. For Christianity as a divine-human religion, the natural, human side of religious development, and consequently its historical paths, must in no way be ignored. Christ came when ‘the times and seasons were fulfilled’, when historical humanity had grown sufficiently mature for this. And if points of resemblance and affinity are found between biblical teachings and, for example, Babylonian beliefs, or connections are sought between individual features of Jewish and subsequently Christian apocalypticism and the religions of Iran and Babylon, such kinship, this existence of points of contact between Christianity and ‘paganism’, even if it were conclusively proved, would in no way undermine the religious significance of the biblical narrative or even its ‘divine inspiration’. It would testify only that individual aspects or features of truth, usually combined, however, with many errors and distortions, can also be found in ‘natural’ religions. Obviously, scientific discoveries of this kind, insofar as they can be considered firmly established and rigorously verified, and are not the product of hasty and thoughtless generalisations prompted by unbelief, should lead us to broaden and to modify somewhat our old ideas about humanity's religious path; a religious philosophy of history must elucidate the significance of natural revelation. But if we are not to consider them dangerous to the foundations of faith, both scholars themselves and the general public must keep firmly in mind the limits of historicism. Historical investigation is wholly incompetent to give a decisive answer concerning the highest religious values that constitute the content of the dogmas of faith. For the ultimate truths and foundations of faith stand above or below, but in any case outside, scientific proof, and consequently outside historical investigation. One cannot, for example, prove scientifically that Christ is the God-man; only personal religious experience, immediate intuition, can reveal this, for it is not ‘flesh and blood’ that reveal it to Peter when he confesses Him, according to the Lord's own words. Coming to faith is a free, truly miraculous act, like a new birth. And what cannot be proved scientifically cannot be refuted scientifically either. If the historical (‘Ritschlian’) school in Germany at present denies Christ's divine humanity, it does so on religious and metaphysical, rather than scientific and historical, grounds, because of its quite distinctive understanding of Christianity and the religious experience connected with it. Among the best representatives of historical scholarship, these limits of historicism are recognised, one might say, ever more clearly. And the most conscientious and perceptive of contemporary historians, aware of these limits, sometimes acknowledge even within scholarly investigation itself the inadequacy of the powers of natural explanation. Faithful to their scholarly duty, they seek to carry natural-scientific explanation through to the end, but do not shrink from admitting where it is inapplicable. In this sense, among the best representatives of historical scholarship you will more than once encounter the statement that, although the causes of the spread of early Christianity may be discerned in various natural facts, its birth nevertheless remains mysterious and miraculous.
Owing to the peculiar character of the subject, personal faith, personal religion and personal intuition have a primary significance in the history of Christianity. For the whole history of the emergence of early Christianity appears in an entirely different light to those who have come to believe in Christ, to those who do not believe in Him but believe only in His Father (the contemporary German school of Ritschlian theology), and to those who believe in neither the Son nor the Father at all. This explains, among other things, the astonishing religious and at the same time historical blindness of unbelieving investigators who consider it possible to explain Christianity without Christ, wholly apart from any influence of religious personalities, by some natural, elemental factors, economic ones, for example. It is as though someone set out to write a history of music while not merely failing to understand music, but feeling aversion to it. It is clear what sort of history one can expect from such an investigator. Here we should recall Professor Sohm's fine words. What he says to jurists applies to all investigators:
‘A new world surrounds the jurist, the world of Christian life through faith, a world in which he is unable to see anything with a jurist's eyes or grasp anything with a jurist's hands. Take off your shoes, for the ground on which you stand is holy ground! Christianity entered the world as something above the earthly, above the worldly. You will never understand this unless you yourself have drunk from the wondrous cup whose contents quench the thirst of the soul. Drink, and you will never thirst. Drink, and you will discover a new world, never seen by you before, the world of the spiritual, arching like a vault over the world of earthly things and bathing it in rays of light.’
I base my characterisation of early Christianity (Urchristentum), the epoch embracing the so-called apostolic and post-apostolic age, that is, extending approximately to the middle of the second century, not on those features over which there is controversy and on which different investigators or different confessions disagree, but on what constitute, so far as I can judge, firmly established historical facts that neither historian nor theologian will now dispute. It goes without saying that, in order to find such common features and discern such points of support, one must, first, confine oneself to a few broad strokes, and secondly, adopt a wide historical perspective in which all detail would merge, while what is pronounced and fundamental would stand out.
The modern person, with his questions and sufferings, anxieties and cares, yearns in his soul towards the sanctuary of early Christianity, when the Lord was so near, when the gifts of the Holy Spirit were poured out so abundantly, when the holy apostles lived and taught, when the holy martyrs shed their blood, when the foundations of Church order and doctrine were taking shape. He yearns towards it with his own pains and his own sufferings, in the hope of receiving an answer to his present questions. And many believe that there, in the promised land, they will find their golden age, the resolution of their questions and relief from their present anxieties. For Christianity as a whole, and especially for contemporary Christianity, early Christianity has the significance of a model, an example, a norm; at the same time it is the seed from which the historical plant grows. What, then, can we learn from early Christianity at the present time? In what can it still serve us as a model, and in what, conversely, can it not? For which needs of the soul will the modern person find a guiding norm in it, and for which will he find none at all? Or: what was present in early Christianity, and what was not?
Towards a characterisation of the condition of the ancient world
One of the most important gains of recent historical investigation is that we now have a much fuller, more vivid and more accurate picture of the spiritual condition of the world in which Christianity was born, of the fermenting vat into which its new leaven was cast. We can no longer be satisfied with a simplified and tendentious portrayal of the ancient world around the birth of Christ as having spent its strength, exhausted its potentialities and collapsed through its own rottenness. To diminish the strength of a defeated adversary, for the ancient world was after all defeated by the new faith, is by no means to magnify the victor, especially when this is purchased at the cost of historical truth. We cannot fail to be grateful to recent philologists and historians for the fact that, through their labours, the ancient world is taking on features that are increasingly living and significant, by no means dead. It cannot be denied that, spiritually, this highly cultivated epoch, like our own, no longer possesses its original freshness: the marks of weariness and decadence, epigonism and dejection plainly lie upon it. Yet this applies chiefly to the higher cultured classes, who lived their own distinctive and, apparently, even more isolated life than they do now; it applies less to the middle and lower classes, among whom Christianity chiefly developed at first. The culture of this epoch was distinguished by a very high level in all the most important fields. True, it was already, so to speak, a culture of the second order, Hellenistic rather than Hellenic, possessing no longer the language of Plato and Demosthenes but a considerably altered dialect, the so-called common language, the koine, in which the books of the New Testament were also written. Yet this koine was the language of the whole cultured world, rather than of a small Greek state: a world welded together by Alexander the Great and welded anew by the Roman emperors. Throughout the whole world of that time (the oikoumene), this language was universally recognised and known, just as a single authority and a single set of laws prevailed; the former boundaries of isolation and particularism had been destroyed, and many peoples had been absorbed into one state. This external unification, improved communications and so forth naturally made the preaching of Christianity much easier. (An inscription has survived on the tomb of a Phrygian merchant who made the journey to Rome seventy-two times, a clear sign of how secure internal communications were.) The firm policy of imperial authority under Augustus laid the foundations for a calmer and more secure position for the provinces, which for this reason were especially monarchically inclined and revived on this occasion their old memories of the religious adoration of Eastern despots in order to apply it to the cult of the Roman emperors. Augustus, as is well known, is first called god and saviour (Σωτήρ) in one of the inscriptions in Asia Minor. The culture of the ancient world had not yet reached complete decline or spoken its final word; on the contrary, it was rich in creative powers. In literature this epoch can name a whole series of outstanding masters of poetry and prose (Caesar and Horace, Virgil and Tacitus, among others). A literary character generally distinguishes this epoch, which also created new forms of its own (the philosophical diatribe, among others); with the reign of Vespasian begins the period now called the Second Sophistic (Wendland). Eloquence was very highly valued and was taught in the schools, as was rhetoric. ‘Writer’ and ‘orator’ were scarcely less honourable titles among cultivated circles than they are now. The philosophy of this period concerned itself chiefly with questions of a moral and practical character and, alongside the frivolous scepticism and militant atheism of some, produced exalted religious dispositions in others. In Stoicism we possess an enduring monument to the spiritual greatness of the man of antiquity; the writings of Epictetus or Marcus Aurelius, Plutarch or Seneca still make an impression today and sometimes astonish us by their approximation to Christian morality, an affinity recognised and noted by Christian writers too and sometimes expressed in direct borrowings from them. Stoicism developed the ideal of the philosophical righteous man, the ascetic who serves truth, and undoubtedly, by deepening moral consciousness, prepared the way for Christianity's successes. By preaching universal humanity and brotherhood, it helped to mitigate slavery. At the same time it sharpened an already intense individualism and concentrated interest on the problem of the personal self, which occupied the best minds of the time with irresistible force. Although historians possess no little material for characterising the profound moral decline and moral perversions of the imperial epoch (to which the Apostle Paul also bears witness in the Epistle to the Romans), a series of qualifications must nevertheless be made to this characterisation. The very presence in Roman society of such lofty moral teachings and of moral judgements and evaluations founded upon them compels us to regard the moral condition of the ancient world as, after all, not so hopeless.
At this time one can also encounter, in Seneca for example, discussions of the harm of much learning and of science's inability to answer ultimate questions, reminiscent of present-day talk about the bankruptcy of science. It cannot be said that this period was unacquainted with science already in the form of exact knowledge emancipated from philosophy. In the Hellenistic epoch (in Alexandria in the third century before Christ), it was precisely the exact sciences that attained an unprecedented perfection of their methods. Mathematics and astronomy, geography, mechanics, optics and medicine developed especially strongly, although as the Christian era approached, independent scientific creativity was already weakening (Wendland, 26–27). The school of Neoplatonism, which worthily crowns the development of Greek philosophy, provides the best evidence that the power of Greek thought had not yet been exhausted. A distinctive feature of the disposition and thought of the best people of this time was religious restlessness and the search for God. By the character of its problems, philosophy itself was increasingly becoming theology, while religious philosophy then, as now, often proved a surrogate for religion. A thirst for revelation, for the actual experience of the Deity instead of philosophising about Him, spread widely through society.
The condition of religion at this time also contributed to this. The native religion of Greece and Rome had largely disintegrated. Under the influence of philosophy, the original polytheism was gradually being transformed into monotheism, with the gods receiving a symbolic, allegorical interpretation. The influx of cults from all the countries incorporated into the empire effaced the individuality of the old national gods and levelled them into abstract figures, while at the same time producing a religious syncretism unprecedented in history. Eastern religions and cults, with their mysterious, eccentric and orgiastic features, exerted the strongest influence: Egypt (Serapis and Isis and Anubis), Syria (Adonis), Phrygia (Cybele), Babylon and Persia (the cult of Mithras) handed on their gods and their cults to the Roman state. They brought in their train their magic, astrology, sorcery and wizardry. To this must be added the revival of mystical currents in Hellenistic religion: the Orphics with their mysteries, the order of the Pythagoreans, the cult of Dionysus. All this strove to destroy the barrier between the human being and the transcendent world; in it all was expressed a thirst for revelation, salvation and redemption. In this sense the world was ready to meet the Herald of eternal, immortal life, to receive the Redeemer.
It is worth noting that at this same time the religion of man-godhood spoke its last (or first?) word in the form of the imperial cult. This cult, which should be considered in connection with antiquity's whole view of the possibility of deifying a human being, generalises and sums up what had previously been expressed in scattered hints. Humanity organised and living a state and cultural life, and the state as the organisation of that life, personified in the Caesars and first of all in the ‘saviour’ Augustus: this was the deity before which philosopher and simple man, devout pagan and sceptic alike bowed down and offered sacrifice. The imperial cult is the dome that crowned the ancient world.
Thus, although the ancient world was ill at the time Christianity appeared, it was not yet about to die at once. On the contrary, much of what the modern person loves and values in his culture, literature, philosophy, science, art and politics, he will find here too. In ancient history there are many of the basic elements of our present culture (apart from the development of exact knowledge and applied science, and the industry founded upon them, and consequently our socialism connected with it).
Christianity confronts the ‘world’ and culture from the very beginning. Christianity entered the world at a time when it was at its cultural zenith, and the culture of antiquity stood on the shoulders of the still older, vanished cultures of Babylon and Egypt. How, then, did it enter? To what did it attach itself, on what did it rely, and how did it define itself?
Christianity’s entry into the world. — The first preachers’ lack of historical weapons. — The power of their preaching
Christianity entered the world by unearthly paths. It made use of no means taken from the historically formed environment; it appeared as an entirely new and distinctive force, outside culture and outside history, rejecting the crooked and broken paths of history. It addressed itself not to the human being's historical exterior, nor even to his reason, but to his heart; it seized his will and kindled new life within him. The Apostle Paul's words concerning his preaching, that it takes place ‘not in persuasive words of human wisdom, but in the manifestation of spirit and power’, may serve to characterise the entire early Christian mission. Those who went out to preach were neither philosophers like the Stoics who then wandered about with their philosophical teaching, nor scholars (Paul alone had been touched by rabbinical learning, and even this was by no means the Hellenic wisdom of the age), nor men of letters, so highly valued in that literary age. Need much be said about Christianity's non-literary character when it is known that the apostles were ‘unlearned and barely literate’ men (as the apostles Peter and John are called in Acts: ἀγράμματοι καὶ ἰδιῶται)? It is doubtful whether all of them could read, these provincials who had grown up in a remote corner of the Roman Empire, Palestine, which, although not closed to Hellenistic influences, had nevertheless preserved its distinctive theocratic character even amid the culture of that time. About a century passed before the first writers appeared in Christianity. The sacred books of the New Testament, too, appeared far from all at once. The first Christian generation was content with oral tradition, with accounts of the Saviour's life and teaching from His apostles. Our canonical Gospels arose by no means as literary works, but as instructive readings for religious edification. Most of the apostolic epistles were originally also private letters to various communities, only later acquiring the significance of a possession of the Church as a whole. The earliest monuments of Christian writing already belong to the second century; one must see how far removed they are in content and form from the purely literary works of the same period, how simple and unpretentious, childlike in their purity but also childlike in their naivety, these writings are, wholly without concern for questions of culture or history, occupied only with questions of faith and religious instruction. Against the background of this literature, modest in both quantity and quality, the miracle of the fourfold Gospel stands out still more sharply, with the Face of Christ reflected in it, this image not made by hands, embodied in words. Criticism that attempts to explain the Gospel without Christ must halt powerless before this fact. The image of Christ cannot be invented: this is beyond human powers, and still less can it be ascribed to such modest writers as the authors of the New Testament books were.
Later, when Christianity, in the person of the apologists, begins to use in its preaching, besides its direct action upon the soul, the means of human instruction, to appeal to reason and rely on philosophy, it borrows these means from the school of pagan philosophy, from Stoicism and Platonism. In short, it takes them from the surrounding culture created by history, and to that extent loses its distinctive character outside history and enters history. And observe how weak, pale and often contradictory this defence is in the age of the apologists, right up to Origen. If one could think that the power of early Christianity lay precisely in this philosophical setting, one might fear that its cause was lost and that it could not withstand a battle with pagan philosophy, on which, moreover, it itself relies. Reading the apologists, one involuntarily recalls the Apostle Paul's characterisation of Christian preaching: ‘We carry this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing power may be ascribed to God and not to us’ (II Cor. IV, 7). Finally, the predominant body of the first Christians was also recruited, as one may conclude from the apostolic epistles and other sources, chiefly from the middle and lower uneducated classes. The wealthy and educated were a minority; and those pagan philosophers who theoretically seemed closer than others to Christianity (Stoics and Platonists) at first simply failed to notice it, and later regarded it with something more like hostility and believed the empty and foolish tales spread about Christians. In all its natural human equipment Christianity was powerless and helpless. It challenged the whole world, disregarding all human means and addressing itself directly to the heart with its mad, monstrous and paradoxical preaching of Christ crucified and risen. To accept such a Messiah and Saviour of the world was equally difficult and repugnant for Jews, who awaited a Messiah, but not such a one, and for pagans, whose prejudices of aesthetics, philosophy, nationality and conventional morality resisted recognising the Saviour of the world in a crucified Jew. It was as difficult to believe in Christ then, and, if you will, as easy, as it is now. For the word of the cross was offered and received, then as now, neither by the understanding nor by reason, which can only acknowledge the already accomplished fact of this acceptance and in one way or another interpret and justify it, but through some mysterious inner experience, inexpressible because irrational, or more precisely supra-rational, like a new birth, like life, like death, like love. This uniquely mysterious character of the birth of faith, and this position of Christ's preachers in relation to the world with its human wisdom and human evaluations, received an immortal, divinely inspired characterisation in the words of the Apostle Paul which the Church reads at one of the greatest moments of its liturgical cycle, at Vespers on Good Friday, when those praying stand as though before the cross of Golgotha with the lifeless body of the Divine Sufferer. Here is that triumphant hymn of victory over the world which will always find an echo in believers' hearts. Looking at the modest community, the fruit of his preaching in Corinth, one of the centres of learning of that time, the apostle says:
‘Christ sent me … to preach the gospel, not in wisdom of speech, lest the cross of Christ be made void. For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and reject the understanding of those who understand (Isa. 29, 14). Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputant of this age? Has not God turned the wisdom of this world into foolishness (Isa. 33, 18)? For when the world, by its own wisdom, did not know God in the wisdom of God, it pleased God to save believers through the foolishness of preaching. For the Jews demand a miracle, and the Greeks seek wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling-block to the Jews and foolishness to the Greeks, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ, the power of God and the wisdom of God; for the foolishness of God is wiser than human beings, and the weakness of God is stronger than human beings. Look, brethren, at yourselves who are called: not many of you are wise according to the flesh, not many powerful, not many nobly born. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong; and the low-born things of the world, the despised things and the things that count for nothing, God chose to bring to nothing the things that count, so that no flesh should boast before God’ (I Cor. I, 17–29).
Could a more decisive challenge be thrown down to the world than in these words? And after these words, need we ask the question now customary: what, then, was the Apostle Paul's attitude to the culture surrounding him, to science, to art? He had none at all. One need only put this question to feel that it is addressed to the wrong person and that there can be no answer to it. The Apostle Paul, and with him all earliest Christianity, stands in its religious foundation outside the world, outside history, and consequently outside culture as well. This fundamental feature of it is established not only by immediate religious intuition but also by modern historical scholarship. It was exclusively and, in the opinion of some, one-sidedly religious. It taught and concerned itself with a relation to God rather than to the world (and only in God with a relation to the world); it taught people to find salvation in God from the ‘world lying in evil’. The Apostle Paul, as is well known, said of himself that he wished to ‘depart’ in order to be with Christ, and that only love and concern for his flock compelled him to value life. Given this religious fullness, this reality of communion with God, which once led the apostle to say of himself that ‘he himself does not live, but Christ lives in him’, all the songs of earth seemed dull beside this music of the heavenly spheres resounding in the soul. The wall between this world and the world beyond had been removed, albeit briefly; the ladder between earth and heaven had at last been restored. To win a soul, it was necessary not to convince it but only to bring it into communion with this life of grace, not to prove Christianity but to show it, for ‘the Kingdom of God is not in word, but in power’ (I Cor. IV, 17). (Unfortunately, we have now lost this power and left ourselves words alone, hence the deadness and lifelessness of contemporary preaching.) Earthly life was regarded and valued only in relation to the ‘age to come’, and aroused no independent interest in itself. It had to be passed through, but only because there was no avoiding it.
The significance of eschatology in early Christianity
Moreover, the early Christians did not believe in the stability or long duration of this world; on the contrary, they expected its speedy, almost immediate end. All recent historical scholarship unanimously confirms the exceptional significance of eschatology, the teaching concerning the end of the world, in the disposition of early Christianity. Traces of this conviction that ‘the end is near’ and ‘the form of this world is passing away’ are scattered through the Gospels, the apostolic epistles and all early Christian writing. What we now, in the twentieth century, interpret in the broader sense of an inner necessity for the end of history, slowly ripening, was then understood in the sense of its immediate proximity. Recall that the Apostle Paul had to calm the Thessalonians, who had abandoned their occupations in expectation of the Second Coming. In the Montanist heresy of the middle of the second century, at a time when eschatological expectations were generally already beginning to fade considerably, these dispositions were reflected in an exaggerated and partly caricatured form: the prophet Montanus, with the prophetesses Prisca and Maximilla, leads a crowd of his followers to meet the coming Christ. As you see, adventists, who made it their speciality to determine the times and seasons of the Second Coming, are by no means a novelty in the history of Christianity; on the contrary, almost every significant page of Christian history has its representatives (it is enough to recall, for example, the Anabaptists, the Independents, the Fifth Monarchists and so forth). Nor should we forget here the influence of the historical environment in which early Christianity grew up: the apocalyptic dispositions of Judaism. Recent research into the religion of the Jews in the New Testament period has disclosed with particular clarity the development of apocalyptic conceptions and apocalyptic literature in Judaism.
Whatever one's attitude to the Apocalypse, and however one interprets it, it is undoubtedly also a historical document testifying to the disposition of the early Christian epoch. The concluding prayer of the Apocalypse, ‘Even so, come, Lord!’, was apparently one of the earliest prayers of Christianity. Not only the righteous people mentioned in the Apocalypse (ch. 6, vv. 9–10), but many Christians prayed for the hastening of the coming in glory. In one of the earliest surviving texts of prayers, given in the Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, the eucharistic prayer contains, among other petitions, ‘May the form of this world pass away’. Apparently the same meaning was also placed in the words of the Lord's Prayer, ‘Thy kingdom come’. Only in Tertullian, at the end of the second and beginning of the third century, do we find mention of the prayer de mora finis, that is, for the delaying of the end (though alongside the prayer de adventu, which never disappeared from liturgical use). Evidently, in this interval the prevailing disposition had had time to change considerably on this point. For some, the conception of the Second Coming was linked with the general end of the world; for others it bore the vivid features of sensuous Jewish apocalypticism, that is, an earthly kingdom of a thousand years, so-called chiliasm. In one form or the other, however, the idea of an imminent world cataclysm permeates the scant Christian literature of the first and second centuries. In the Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, a document of the early second century rediscovered only in 1883, the concluding chapter speaks of the Second Coming, before which the Antichrist will appear.
‘And then the sign of truth will appear: first, the sign of an opening in heaven, then the sign of the sound of a trumpet, and third, the resurrection of the dead, though not of all, but as it is said: the Lord will come, and all the saints with him. Then the world will see the Lord coming upon the clouds of heaven.’
The Epistle of Pseudo-Barnabas (from the end of the first century), highly esteemed and widely read in early Christianity, expresses its attitude to life as follows:
‘I am greatly comforted as I await my release.’ It also speaks of the nearness of the Antichrist (‘the final temptation has drawn near’), of ‘the last days’. ‘Near is the day on which everything will perish with the wicked one. Near is the Lord and His reward.’
In the First Epistle of Clement, Pope of Rome, likewise from about the year 100, the following is given as a motive for the exhortation to remain in peace and love:
‘Soon indeed and suddenly the will of the Lord will be accomplished, as Scripture itself testifies: He will come soon and will not delay, and suddenly the Lord and Holy One whom you all await will come to His temple.’
In the Shepherd of Hermas, a work of the middle of the second century, half apocalyptic and half didactic, widely read in the Roman Church and even revered as canonical, the destinies of the Church are revealed to the author in a series of visions. In one vision the Church is represented as a tower under construction and already nearing completion. ‘The tower is still being built … but it will soon be finished’, and this assurance permeates the entire work. At the beginning of the second century, Ignatius the God-bearer says in his Epistle to the Ephesians: ‘These are already the last times.’ The same motifs appear among the early apologists, who succeeded the so-called Apostolic Fathers in Christian writing. Justin the Philosopher (mid-second century), in the Dialogue with Trypho the Jew, says: ‘Meanwhile the times are drawing towards the end of the age, and he who will speak blasphemous and insolent words against the Most High already stands at the doors’, and so forth. Justin goes on to paint an entirely sensuous chiliastic picture. An even more sensuous picture of the thousand-year kingdom is painted by St Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons, renowned for his struggle against Gnosticism. (As is well known, some Gnostics, deeply infected with Eastern dualism and a negative attitude towards the flesh, were for that very reason also hostile to chiliasm and interpreted the relevant passages of the prophets and the Apocalypse allegorically. Irenaeus combats this interpretation.) The term used in the First Epistle of Clement in designating the community's address speaks eloquently of the extent to which Christians felt themselves ‘strangers and sojourners on earth’: the community sojourning (παροικοῦσα) in such-and-such a city. But enough quotations. There is no doubt that any picture of early Christian dispositions will be false and incomplete unless at its centre is placed this burning assurance of the nearness of the end, this impatient and passionate expectation of it, and this impulse to go out to meet Him who is coming. In this impulse early Christianity rose above the earth and separated itself from it, making itself indifferent to earthly values. Everything will soon burn; the heavens will pass away with a great noise; impious Babylon will fall; the hymn already sounds in heaven: ‘Fallen, fallen is Babylon’ (Apocalypse). One must strengthen oneself against the last temptations, which, incidentally, were not long in arriving in the form of the persecutions that began. It is not without reason that the figure of the first persecutor, Nero, is found in the apocalyptic beast, and the ‘number of the beast’ (666 or, according to other manuscripts, 616) is deciphered as the sum of the numerical values of his name.
For this reason there was, in general, no place in the early Christians' conceptions for history in our present sense. Their conceptions of the end remained external, and their expectation of it passive. Awaiting the end, they did not think that their descendants would have to settle and resettle on this tedious earth, or that history was only beginning a new chapter. Just as in a distant perspective all intermediate points merge and only the limits are visible, just as two mountains separated by a chasm, precipices and deep valleys merge into one from afar, so for the first Christians humanity's historical path was projected onto a single plane. Owing to this absence of a sense of historical perspective, they thought that everything on earth was finished; they were certain that the world was already ripe for this end. They fell victim to a deception of historical vision: we must now say this with loving reverence, but quite firmly. For us it has become clear, through the immediate experience of nineteen centuries rather than through inferences and dispositions, that history exists, with its tasks and problems. We now stand under the sign of historicism, and we also regard the eschatological worldview of the first Christians historically; we must therefore give it its full weight in understanding the history of early Christianity.
Early Christianity and the pagan ‘world’
The early Christians' attitude to the surrounding world described above, which arose from the intensity and fullness of their religious experiences, is also explained by the fact that this entire world appeared to them to be under the power of demons. It was a pagan world in which idolatry reigned, and its culture was pagan in its very origin. Christian communities felt themselves to be little islands lost in the boundless sea of paganism with its perversions, a frail little boat borne upon the ocean's waves. At first, therefore, this world could not arouse even curiosity, still less sympathetic attention. Self-preservation had to be their concern, and for this purpose they had to take up a position of distrustful and irreconcilable opposition to, and struggle against, the pagan world. Anyone reading chapter 17 of Acts, which recounts the Apostle Paul's preaching in the Athenian Areopagus and where his direct contact with the pagan world is felt especially vividly, cannot fail to be struck by the faint and one-sided impression made on him by the capital of Hellas, whose very ruins now speak so deeply to our hearts. Here there are no traces of admiration for the beauty of the statues or the elegance of the architecture. No, all that is said here, with stern brevity, is: ‘… Paul's spirit was stirred with indignation at the sight of this city full of idols’ (XVII, 16). All the seductive, enchanting beauty of the pagan city and its cult faded at the thought that these were idols, that people prayed to them instead of to the true God … Even one or another of us, for all our religious laxity, would lose his taste for the Venus de Milo or another ancient statue whose beauty we now admire if it stood in a temple rather than a museum and served as an object of religious worship rather than aesthetic contemplation. We can therefore also understand the irreconcilability, and sometimes the bitterness, with which later Christians regarded not only idolatry but the idols themselves. At the same time, before the eyes of the Christian, unarmed in the human sense and strong only in his faith and an otherworldly power, stood this Babylon, glittering and seductive, in purple and luxury, threatening to swallow up the new birth. Paganism and godlessness permeated all life around them, yet the first Christians had to live in this world. It encircled them in a tight ring. Just consider the Apostle Paul's constant concern to protect his communities from what was natural and everyday all around them. The Roman Christians are surrounded by unnatural sexual perversions; an incestuous man has appeared in the young Corinthian community; mixed marriages with pagans, the consumption of meat sacrificed to idols, appeals to pagan courts and the like arouse fresh anxiety.
Not content with this passive resistance, which is always the strongest, paganism also went over to an active offensive, both through measures of violence in the persecutions of Christians and through spiritual struggle. In the latter sphere, pagan writers attacked from outside (Lucian with satire, Celsus with philosophy); but the enemy within proved still more dangerous when, beginning already in the second century, he clothed a pagan essence outwardly in Christianity). We mean that pagan attempt to falsify Christianity, to leave it almost nothing but its exterior, which bears the general name of gnosis. This serpent's whisper of Eastern syncretism set within Greek philosophy represented a terrible danger to the Church, incomparably greater than the superficial, unsystematic, sometimes cruel but on the whole still not so devastating persecutions. Thus, besides its metaphysical and religious justification, the teaching concerning the world lying in evil also had immediate historical grounds in its favour: at issue was nothing more or less than preserving one's spiritual being from absorption by the hostile and alien element of the pagan world. Such a ‘wartime’ situation could naturally not remain unchanged for all time. This exceptional modus vivendi with the world had to change through the simple fact of Christianity's numerical successes, as well as its growing confidence in its own strength. Moreover, when Christianity wished to express its teaching by human means, to present and formulate it as a truth of reason, as philosophy, it had to turn to the arsenal of human means; these it could find, and in fact did find, in ancient philosophy. When the epoch of the development of Christian theology begins, followed by the Christological and Trinitarian controversies, Christian dogmatics in its formulations undoubtedly rests on the shoulders of Greek philosophy. Harnack and his followers therefore speak of an ‘acute Hellenisation of Christianity’ and see in it already the beginning of a substitution for, and distortion of, Christianity's originally simple and non-dogmatic essence. One may disagree entirely with this assessment of ‘Hellenisation’ and dispute its limits, but one cannot deny the fact that Christianity's attitude towards pagan philosophy gradually changes from negative to positive, sometimes extending to direct borrowings from it, beginning already with the apologists.
Early Christianity and the state
The ‘world’ surrounding the early Christians was an organised state, encircling the whole inhabited world of that time like a ring of steel. And this state, as the organisation of order, economic life, culture and religion, of everything by which humanity then lived, as the sum of all its values, became conscious of and proclaimed itself the highest principle in the world, a deity. This religion of ancient man-godhood, of which Feuerbach and Comte dreamed in the nineteenth century, found its realisation in the imperial cult. ‘The content of this faith is grandiose,’ says a recent historian, ‘for all the gifts of culture, from the preservation of physical life to the highest delights of the spirit, appear as gifts of the deity that is immanent in the state and at a given moment finds realisation in the emperor, his genius or his destiny … Hence it is entirely consistent that refusal to sacrifice to the emperor is treason against the state; and Christians refuse in full awareness that they are rejecting the “πολιτεία τοῦ κόσμου” (the kingdom of this world): they feel themselves citizens of another kingdom. It is equally consistent that they prove to be ἄθεοι (godless), for together with the state cult they reject all the gods, who exist only by the grace of the state.’ It was on this religious, rather than political, ground that Christianity collided with the Roman state and began an unequal struggle with it, a struggle that ended neither in a victory for the Roman state nor by any means in a complete victory for Christianity, which had put on the fetters of statehood.
Christianity could not and did not recognise the state as such a supreme principle, organising life, ordering it completely and resolving all questions: that is, humanity organised by measures of external coercion and self-sufficient in this organisation, the ‘kingdom of this world’. To recognise this would have meant bowing before the prince of this world in return for his loaves, for power, for signs. It answered the cult of state man-godhood with the Apocalypse, a book in which flaming words and fiery images foretold the destruction of the beast and his kingdom, sustained by violence and false signs. Against the authority of the ‘saviour’ Augustus it set the might of the Saviour of the world; against Caesar's ‘kingdom’, the ‘Kingdom of God’; against the power of the ‘autocrat’ (autokrator), the omnipotence of the ‘Almighty’ (pantokrator); against Caesar's lordship, the authority of ‘our Lord Jesus Christ’. The eschatological revolutionary character of the Apocalypse, which undermined the very foundation of the pagan state that had become conscious of itself as life's supreme and ultimate principle, was apparently clear to the hostile side too. For we know from the second century after Christ that the authorities prohibited the reading of writings of an apocalyptic character on pain of death.
And yet, for all their irreconcilability towards the pagan state as a religious institution, as the kingdom of the beast and the Antichrist, the first Christians were as far as possible from political revolutionism. Even the Apocalypse calls for patience and abstention from the sword and violence, and exhorts its readers to await the world catastrophe in the hope of its nearness. ‘He who testifies to these things says: Yes, I am coming soon! Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.’ Such is the concluding chord of the Apocalypse. And throughout early Christian literature you will encounter nothing resembling political utopias (admittedly, some historians suppose that the frequent calls to obey the authorities in Christian writing testify precisely to the nervousness and unrest of the political mood, but this conclusion is, at the least, debatable). Let us not forget, too, that in the first century Palestine was seized by a passionate striving for political liberation. These motives also play a part in the Gospel history in the condemnation of Jesus, and even before the crucifixion, when the people were given a choice, the terrorist Barabbas, very likely a political murderer, was preferred to Him. Palestine in the first century after Christ was the arena of continuous revolutions and insurrections, ending in an unparalleled extermination of Jews and the destruction of Jerusalem. According to the tradition preserved by Eusebius, before the revolutionary outbreak that ended in the destruction of the holy city, the Jerusalem community of Jewish Christians, generally closely connected with their fellow Jews, if only by attendance at the Temple and observance of the Law, received a prophetic warning and moved to Pella. This non-participation by the Christians, together with religious causes, made them so hateful to the Jews that during the final uprising of Bar Kokhba many Christians were killed by the insurgents. Such was the situation in the most unsettled place, and the same may be said with still greater force of other regions of the Empire, where Christians were a tiny minority. For those who lived by hope and assurance of the nearness of the greatest world catastrophes under the action of a Higher Power, political revolutionism appeared an uninteresting palliative. To this must also be added the general passivity of early Christian eschatology noted above.
Yet until the world cataclysm arrived, it was necessary to live within the state; there was no escaping it. Nor did the early Christians leave it. They accepted the state, but as an order of things intended to safeguard the possibility of existence, rather than as a deity. Only in the matter of offering sacrifices and preaching Christianity, which was a forbidden or unauthorised religion, did the apostles' words to the members of the Sanhedrin in reply to the prohibition on preaching Christ serve as the Christians' norm of conduct: ‘We must obey God rather than men’ (Acts V, 29). They resolutely gave what was God's precedence over what was Caesar's. In other respects Christians considered themselves obliged to behave loyally towards the authorities: they paid taxes, rendered obedience and generally regarded authority as an instrument of goodness and order, as an institution established by God, according to the Apostle Paul's well-known definition (Rom. 13, 1–7). Likewise, exhortations to pray for the ruler and for the authorities, ‘that we may live a quiet and tranquil life in all godliness and purity’, recur more than once in the apostolic epistles (I Tim. 2, 1–3; Titus 3; I Pet. 2, 13–17). All this acquires still greater significance from the fact that it was written in an age of persecution, the age of Nero, Domitian, Trajan and Hadrian.
3; I Петр. 2, 13-17).
In the literature of the Apostolic Fathers and the apologists we frequently encounter mention of prayer for the authorities. The hieromartyr Polycarp, a disciple of St John the Theologian, who had only recently seen Ignatius the God-bearer off to Rome to be torn apart by beasts, writes in his Epistle to the Philippians: ‘Pray also for kings, for authorities and princes, even for those who persecute and hate you, and for the enemies of the cross.’ And in one of the earliest prayers of the Roman community, from the end of the first century, preserved for us in Clement's First Epistle to the Corinthians, we see how this apostolic exhortation was fulfilled. It should be noted that the prayer dates from the end of Domitian's reign, marked by fierce persecution of Christians. About a quarter of the prayer's fairly extensive text concerns the emperor.
Prayer for the emperor persisted despite the severe trials experienced by the growing Church in the second and third centuries. ‘We cannot offer sacrifices before images of the emperors, but we pray for their welfare’ is a reply frequently repeated in the later acts of the martyrs. Although the testimony of the apologists is sometimes viewed with a degree of suspicion because of the special purpose of an apology, to defend Christians from persecution, its agreement with the evidence we have cited confirms its reliability.
Thus one may say that the early Christians were, or at least wished to be, loyal subjects and to acknowledge the obligations of citizens. Yet for all that they were, of course, bad citizens of the Roman state, and in his own way the Roman patriot Celsus was not entirely wrong when he exclaimed to these ‘anarchists’: ‘If everyone behaved like the Christians, the emperor would soon be left alone and isolated; the course of affairs on earth would soon fall into the hands of the wildest and most repulsive barbarians.’ Early Christianity's attitude towards the self-deifying Roman state amounts at most to passive acquiescence; but in this passivity its non-participation offers greater resistance to the state than outright rebellion and revolution. For Roman statehood was a religion; it demanded the activity of will and mind, the whole human being. To a true Roman patriot there was nothing attractive in the sight of ‘atheists and anarchists’ who denied the religion of statehood, even though they prayed for the sovereign, and it aroused growing anxiety in him. Christians' practical participation in the life of the state was determined by a state of passive indifference. Here the Apostle Paul's injunction that each should remain in the condition in which he was called held good. History has preserved for us only isolated names of Christian state officials (the most outstanding of them, Titus Flavius Clemens, was accused of atheism and contemptissima inertia). Nor could there have been many, since Christians were initially recruited from the lower class, and only later, in the third century, do they appear at every level of social position.
Especially interesting and acute is the question of Christians' attitude towards military service, further burdened as it was by idolatry and the levies imposed by troops on the population. Apparently no special ‘soldier question’ existed in early Christianity, for the simple reason that there was no universal compulsory military service; and naturally a Christian had no need to enter voluntarily upon this path of temptation. For those, however, who accepted Christianity while in military service, the Apostle Paul's principle of remaining in one's former condition continued to hold. Evidence concerning Christians in the army exists only from the year 170, that is, towards the end of our period; by then the presence of numerous Christians in the army, specifically in Marcus Aurelius's Twelfth Legion, fulminata Melitensis, is already an indisputable fact. As Harnack observes, the increasing number of Christians in the army first decided the question of Christianity's victory over paganism and the public recognition of the rights of the Christian religion. Tertullian, who himself testifies to the presence of Christians in the army, still raises the question whether a Christian may be a soldier and answers it negatively with his customary rigorism, in contrast to Clement of Alexandria, who warns Christian soldiers only against carrying out orders contrary to religion. In any event, life had already resolved this question affirmatively at that time.
Early Christianity's inner attitude towards the state was determined chiefly by expectation of the speedy end and submission to Providence. ‘Eschatology,’ Harnack rightly remarks in this connection, ‘thus became a quietistic and conservative principle.’ Not believing that this world would continue to exist for long, the early Christians could take no particular interest in its affairs, but merely bore patiently and passively the burden laid upon them as an act of obedience. ‘Take care,’ warns the Shepherd of Hermas, ‘like a sojourner in a foreign land, to provide yourself with nothing beyond what is necessary for life; and be ready, when the lord of this city wishes to expel you from it because you do not obey his law, to depart <yourself> to your own homeland and live according to your law without care and with joy’ (Similitudes, first similitude).
For the man of antiquity the state was everything: home, homeland, temple. For the Christian it moved from the centre to the periphery, for he had found a new dwelling, not only beyond this world but also on earth. This was the ekklesia, the Church, the community. Beneath imperial Rome an underground world arose that undermined it (Roma soterranea); every thread of the Christian's heart bound him to this world. Its rulings, rather than those of the state, had decisive force for him; here he found the highest norm of personal and social life. A new idea was born, a new commandment, a new and higher ideal of human fellowship, in a divine, theocratic, ecclesial union rather than in an earthly man-divine state. To this day these two planes of life, these two orders of relations, struggle and collide painfully, penetrating and rending the human soul and creating what appears to be a practically insoluble problem: the relation between Church and state. But Providence eased this agonising task for the early Christians. They were, after all, a small, forbidden, persecuted sect, which could have no influence upon the affairs of the state and was therefore free of responsibility for it. Early Christianity did not bear the state upon its conscience. It could regard it from outside, as an extraneous and alien world, sometimes with hostility, as the apocalyptic ‘beast’, sometimes with friendliness, as ‘God's servant’, and in any case considering its sojourn within it brief and transitional. Only when, having gained a majority within the state, Christianity was declared the state religion, and the state itself, if it could not become Christian, became a state of Christians, at least in name; when eschatological expectations finally faded and history began; when it became necessary to settle firmly and for a long time on this sinful earth: only then did the question of the relation between Church and state loom up with inescapable and ominous force. Christianity had to take upon its conscience and its responsibility the statehood that enveloped it. The ‘world’ lying in evil, which the early Christians had outside themselves, now entered within; and the struggle with it within became by no means easier, but much more complex and profound than when it had been outside and had martyred those who rejected its cruel yoke. The early Christians were simply spared this tragic discord by their childlike, joyful faith that everything would soon end and that the world was not worth troubling about; they were spared it by their position as a persecuted minority bearing no responsibility. Like springs in narrow clefts of rock, they kept their waters pure as a tear of rain, waters with which we still quench our thirst today. But the higher their level rose and the greater the surface they flooded, the more they took on the colours of their surroundings and the more extraneous elements they absorbed. A turbid mixture formed, almost impossible, to outward appearance, to disentangle. So it remains to this very day …
