The General Character of Jewish Apocalyptic Literature
The name Jewish apocalyptic literature denotes a series of works containing ‘revelations’ of mysteries concerning the present condition of the world and humanity, its past and, above all, its future. Strictly speaking, the name apocalypse, or revelation, belongs only to our New Testament ‘Revelation of St John’ (Ἀποκάλυψις Ἰώάνου), and was extended from it to a whole series of Jewish writings associated with it in literary terms. In recent church-historical literature these works are known as pseudepigrapha because they are usually pseudonymous. The period in which apocalyptic literature principally developed opens approximately with the Maccabean revolt and the persecution of Antiochus Epiphanes (168–165 BC), and is interrupted only by the final destruction of the Jewish community after the revolt of Bar Kokhba and others (AD 132–135); it thus embraces about three centuries. The earliest and classic work of this kind is the canonical Book of the Prophet Daniel. According to the prevailing opinion in critical scholarship, it is regarded as a pseudepigraphon composed during the persecution of Antiochus Epiphanes, in 165 or 164. In recent decades scholarship in the history of religion has collected and studied these apocalyptic documents with particular care. Critical editions of the texts, followed by translations of various apocalypses, especially the well-known edition of Old Testament apocrypha and pseudepigrapha edited by Professor Kautsch and of New Testament apocrypha edited by Hennecke, have made these documents accessible, at least to those who know German. In the judgement of specialists, the critical study of apocalyptic literature is still far from being considered complete. But this concerns matters of detail and does not prevent an understanding of its general spirit. The following are the most important documents of Jewish apocalyptic literature, apart from the Book of the Prophet Daniel.
1) The Book of the Secrets of Enoch, preserved in an Ethiopic translation, the so-called ‘Ethiopic Enoch’, is one of the most important and extensive apocalypses. A version of this book was discovered in a Slavonic translation and published by Mr Sokolov (the so-called ‘Slavonic Enoch’; English and German translations also exist). The book consists of several different parts brought together into a single whole by a compiler. According to Beer’s conclusion (Kautsch, Pseudepigraphen, 232), the different parts of Ethiopic Enoch date from between 167 and 64 BC, and it was finally compiled six or seven decades before Christ. It has been called the Jewish prototype of the Catholic Dante. Extremely extensive and varied in content, the book contains chapters on cosmology, history, messianism and eschatology in an exceedingly fantastic form.
2) The Psalms of Solomon (18 in number) originated around the year 50, in the period after Pompey’s invasion, and have survived in Greek. Some are devoted to messianic-apocalyptic themes.
3) The Book of Jubilees (the so-called Leptogenesis, Little Genesis) contains an account parallel to the Book of Genesis, with certain eschatological motifs. Its date of composition is difficult to establish; it has survived only in translation.
4) The Assumption of Moses (Assumptio or Ascensio Mosis, Ἀνάλεψις Μουσέως), a document of the first century after the birth of Christ, a fragment of which has survived in a Latin translation discovered in 1861, contains an outline of the history of the Israelite people, with an eschatological conclusion.
5) The Apocalypse of Ezra (in the Russian Bible, III Ezra, chapters III–XIV) belongs to the reign of Domitian, the period after the destruction of Jerusalem; it has survived in the Latin translation of the Vulgate and is one of the most significant and penetrating works of Jewish apocalyptic literature.
6) The Apocalypse of Baruch exists in two versions, Syriac and Greek. Particularly important is the former, which belongs to the same period as Ezra.
7) The Testament of the Twelve Patriarchs, preserved in Greek, Armenian and Old Slavonic translations, contains the exhortations of Jacob’s twelve sons to their children, into which apocalyptic motifs also find their way. Alongside this group stand apocrypha that have survived only in insignificant fragments, or are known almost solely by their titles (the Life of Adam and Eve, the Apocalypses of Elijah, Zephaniah, Zechariah, Moses and Abraham, testaments, and others). The apocryphal Martyrdom of Isaiah (Ἀναβατικόν Ἠσαΐου, or ascensio Jesaiae) is to a considerable extent Christian in character.
The Sibylline Oracles (oracula sybillina) occupy a special place in apocalyptic literature. These prophecies of the Sibyls, with their collective pseudonymity, were composed over many centuries; legend dates the appearance of the Sibyls to the eighth century before the birth of Christ, in Asia Minor, or more generally in the East. Plato (Phaedrus, 244 AB) speaks of the Sibyl as a public prophetess. In Rome the Sibylline Oracles retained canonical authority until the end of the imperial era. Hellenised Jewry subsequently employed the form of Sibylline prophecy, followed by the Christian world (among ecclesiastical writers we find references to the Sibylline Oracles in St Justin Martyr, Athenagoras, Theophilus, especially Clement of Alexandria and Lactantius, and even in Augustine, De civitate Dei, book XVIII, chapter XXIII). The authority of the Sibylline Oracles in the medieval Church is attested both by the familiar verse Dies irae, dies illa Solvet Saeclum in fovilla Teste David et Sibylla, Day of wrath, that day Will dissolve the world in ashes, As David and the Sibyl bear witness, and by the place allotted to Michelangelo’s four Sibyls on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, that is, in the painted imagery of a place of worship. The texts preserved thanks to this esteem (of the fifteen books known by title we lack only three: books IX, X and XV) contain many apocalyptic motifs from Judaism and early Christianity; books III, IV and V are particularly important.
XVIII, cap. XXIII).
Finally, rabbinic theology, the Talmud and ancient Jewish prayers (Shemoneh Esreh, Habinenu, Kaddish, Musaf) also contain certain petitions of an eschatological character. Even a Platonising spiritualist and individualist such as Philo proved not to be a stranger to apocalyptic thought. We must suppose, of course, that the documents known at present by no means exhaust the apocalyptic literature of the period under study.
Apocalyptic writing was not literature in the present-day sense of the word: the product of subjective, sometimes purely bookish creativity detached from the life of the masses. It was a popular literature, nourishing the moods of the Jewish masses and at the same time reflecting them. It may be likened to condensing clouds of vapour rising above the historical field, just as socialist literature today, at least in part, expresses the elemental moods of the working masses. These were the people’s beliefs, their wisdom and science, their religion. It would, of course, be wrong to characterise the whole Jewish religion in the time of Christ by this apocalyptic folklore alone, since alongside it Pharisaic ritual piety, the religion of the law, also possessed enormous significance; some scholars contrast apocalyptic thought as a popular religion (am ha-aretz) with the Pharisaism of the ‘scribes’, with the ossified ritualism of its hierarchical aristocracy. The best testimony to how intimately the world of apocalyptic images and aspirations had fused with the soul of the people is New Testament literature, for instance the so-called Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke). Here we find ourselves in an apocalyptic atmosphere; we hear its language and its imagery, as we feel with full force when passing directly from reading apocalyptic documents to those of the New Testament. Hence the understandable interest aroused today by the study of apocalyptic literature for a more exact understanding of the historical background of the Gospel story. Attempts have meanwhile become customary in rationalist literature to explain the Gospel through apocalyptic thought, to portray Jesus not only as wholly possessed by apocalyptic conceptions, but also as sharing all their conventional assumptions and the limitations of their age. The significance of apocalyptic thought as the historical environment that left its mark upon the language and imagery of the Gospel, most strongly in its eschatological parts, cannot now be disputed, whatever the character of one’s general religious worldview. Through the New Testament we have unknowingly adopted as familiar many images of this distant and now dead past, images born in the white-hot atmosphere of the last centuries of Judaism.
Among other causes, apocalyptic thought itself bears some responsibility for this white heat. As is well known, these centuries are marked in the history of the Jewish people by exceptional tragedy. It was an age of a small people’s desperate struggle, beyond its strength, for political and at the same time religious independence, first against the Greek and then against the Roman eagle; despite its utter hopelessness, this struggle was marked not only by defeats but also by successes, however insecure. From the very time of the Maccabean revolt the fire of political and religious messianism now lay hidden beneath the ashes, now burst out in revolutionary movements. We shall not dwell on the vicissitudes of this religious and revolutionary struggle, which ended only beneath the ruins of Jerusalem and its sacred temple, in flames whose tongues devoured Jewish apocalyptic literature along with Jerusalem’s buildings. Yet it was precisely this literature that inspired the entire movement, sustained hope of supernatural help from the messenger of heaven, the messiah, and promised the chosen ones the blessedness of the messianic kingdom in place of slavery, poverty, humiliation and violence. The revolutionary messiahs who appeared one after another in this age were foretold by the apocalypses. In general one may say, with one scholar, that ‘Israel perished of its eschatology’. On the soil of apocalyptic revolutionary fervour there also developed a distinctive social-revolutionary terrorist movement, Zealotism, which raised its head particularly in the final years, when the body of the Jewish people was already shuddering in its death throes; then ‘the war against Rome was joined by social revolution’. This significance of apocalyptic thought in the political history of Judaea further emphasises its popular character. It was the faith and hope of the people, as these had taken shape at that time through the whole millennium of Israel’s religious development and its entire long-suffering political history. After the destruction of Jerusalem and the fall of Judaea, apocalyptic literature first came under suspicion in the leading circles of Jewry, and was then wholly banished from use and entirely replaced by Talmudic wisdom. But it was then received into the Christian communities and became favourite reading in certain, chiefly ‘barbarian’, churches, in whose languages many apocalyptic documents have been preserved for us, and later also in the Slavonic East (‘Slavonic Enoch’!).
In their content too, the apocalypses constitute a kind of religious and scientific encyclopaedia of popular wisdom, expressing various aspects of the people’s worldview: in this historical amalgam, in which fragments belonging to different ages, even to different cultures and peoples, are combined into a single whole under cover of pseudonymity, the reverent reader found ‘revelations’ in cosmology and astronomy, physics, demonology, angelology, and the history of the past and the future. In short, this was a veritable ‘people’s university’ of diverse branches of knowledge. At the same time, apocalyptic literature resembles a basin into which the waters of different springs flow and mingle; in this capacity it possesses irreplaceable significance for the study of so-called religious syncretism. Contemporary scholarship in the history of religion is working with the greatest enthusiasm and diligence, though still with problematic results, to break this syncretic whole down into its constituent elements.
A multiplicity of motifs and complexity are the distinguishing features of apocalyptic literature. It therefore wholly resists any simple, unifying characterisation and requires painstaking, detailed study of individual questions. In everyday language apocalyptic literature usually means only ‘revelations’ concerning history and the final destinies of the world, eschatology. The philosophy of history and eschatology do indeed constitute, though of course far from its only theme, one of its most important and characteristic ones. I shall go further: precisely in these themes the creativity of apocalyptic literature is in a certain sense classical, in the same sense that Greek philosophy has classical significance for the history of philosophy generally. Greek philosophy already voices the fundamental motifs of philosophical systems and outlines, although sometimes only in embryo, the fundamental philosophical problems and tendencies, so that the whole subsequent history of philosophy can be represented as a development of the themes and an unfolding of the motifs of Greek philosophy. Jewish apocalyptic literature possesses an analogous significance for the philosophy of history and eschatology: for almost every idea, motif and mood in this sphere, either an analogy or a germ can be found in it. It possesses something of the significance of a formal logic, or a doctrine of the fundamental ‘categories’ of the philosophy of history. The associated interest in entering spiritually into the world of Jewish apocalyptic thought is felt with particular vividness in our age, in whose consciousness the problem of history’s meaning, its purpose and its outcome arises so persistently: an age gripped by a trembling sense of some swift, irresistible, even involuntary forward movement, a vague sensation of historical germination. This pervades our spiritual atmosphere and nourishes a movement so characteristic of our day as socialism; it breaks out in the bloody and intoxicated enthusiasm of revolutions, with their Zealotism but also their historical impetus. Our ear proves especially sensitive when it listens to the beat of the historical pulse of ages that are distant yet kindred. It is therefore not in the least surprising that, amid this triumphant march of historicism in modern scholarship, research in the history of religion should concentrate ever more insistently and intently, especially in recent decades, on the study of apocalyptic literature. To some extent this becomes a historical mirror for our own age as well, acquires an affinity with our burning, tremulous present and becomes for us a means of finding our spiritual bearings. Leaving aside all the other motifs of apocalyptic literature, in the present essay we shall confine ourselves to this one theme alone.
Apocalyptic Literature and ‘Sociology’
In the religious life of the Jewish people, apocalyptic literature historically takes the place of prophecy. When the prophets fell silent, believers began to seek encouragement amid the hardships of life in mysterious apocalyptic writings, veiled by pseudonyms and filled with symbols. The living, personal word of the prophet was replaced by the written, impersonal work of the apocalyptists. Compared with the fiery inspiration of the great prophets, who heard and proclaimed the words of God, the apocalyptists appear to us as epigones; they feed on earlier inspirations and prophecies, although they rework them in their own fashion. The prophets’ inspiration was bound up with their personalities and circumstances; it was occasioned by particular historical events, and the prophet himself was often not only a denouncer or ‘seer’ (nabi), but also a public figure. Taking contemporary events merely as its point of departure, prophecy rises, in majestic poetic images, to contemplate the ‘mysteries of the Kingdom of God’ and its destinies in the history of humanity, and of the Jewish people in particular. In contrast to this practical nature of prophecy, the apocalyptist remains a contemplative, a pious reader steeped in sacred texts, questioning God about what is to come. The prophets proclaimed to their people, and through them to all humanity, the idea of Yahweh as the God of history; they interpreted historical events as the dispensations of God’s wrath, as the fulfilment of His plan and His righteousness. Beginning with Amos, the earliest of the prophets whose words and deeds are recorded in a book, we observe the development of this idea: history as the revelation of God. Appearing in stormy and troubled periods of the people’s life as the storm-petrels of history, in Cornill’s apt expression, they peered into the future with an eagle’s gaze, seeking there the explanation of trials and the fulfilment of promises, if not for the whole people, then at <least> for the ‘remnant of Israel’, its ‘holy remnant’. They fostered in their people faith in the inevitable triumph of God’s righteousness, in God’s manifestation in history, and prepared that messianic worldview which, distinguishing the Israelites from all the peoples of history, prepared the welcome for the true Messiah, the expectation of the nations.
The apocalyptists received from the prophets the idea of a religious philosophy of history, of an inner lawfulness in everything that happens in the life of peoples. The Book of the Prophet Daniel, which, whatever date one assigns to its origin, in any case inaugurates apocalyptic literature, presents a magnificent symbolism of the philosophy of history, embracing the whole world-historical drama in its images and giving it a teleological interpretation. The influence of this book, not only on its own age but also on Christianity, was and remains immense. In Cornill’s just assessment, ‘it is one of the most important and influential books ever written: even now we operate with concepts and use expressions borrowed directly from the Book of Daniel’. It is wholly occupied with the problem of the philosophy of history, and all apocalyptic literature shares this characteristic with it. But here a great and essential difference between prophecy and apocalyptic thought makes itself felt. Both the prophet and the apocalyptist look into the future and seek in it an answer to ‘the accursed questions of the present’. But the prophet lives and acts in the present to a far greater degree than the apocalyptist. His sense of life is more immanent; he is more a moralist and denouncer, the embodied conscience of the people, than a dreaming visionary who has despaired of the present and therefore fixes his gaze on the age to come. The characteristic of the first disposition, courageous activity, the sense of God in history, prompts one to serve Him through historical deeds, to make history; this is a subjective, creative, anti-deterministic or, in modern terms, ‘pragmatic’ attitude to history. It is no accident that the prophets are also the greatest public figures, and sometimes statesmen and patriots; they combine the loftiest elevation of religious feeling with sober realism, I am prepared to say with practicality (let us recall only the political activity of the Prophet Isaiah). Their gaze remains unclouded by the world-historical and eschatological prospect opening before them; they retain both harmony among the powers of the soul and health of mind. They will therefore not drive their people to acts of desperation, nor inspire them to the mad eruptions of revolution that marked the age of apocalyptic thought, of a romantic utopianism engendered in part by historical hopelessness. What the prophets say in the active voice and imperative mood is expressed by the apocalyptists in the passive voice and optative mood. Hence, in their conceptions, the divine will, which governs history while also allowing room for human activity, is perceived as divine fate. For them, the strict determination of everything that happens in history possesses the greatest reality. That objective lawfulness which, although accessible to theoretical knowledge, is inescapable and inexorable in its iron tread, that fatality of lawfulness whose discovery Marxism so prides itself upon, is precisely an original feature of apocalyptic thought. History is viewed here from such angles that no place remains in it for the free human person. Fata volentem ducunt, nolentem trahunt: ‘The fates lead the willing and drag the unwilling.’ Historical lawfulness as conceived in apocalyptic thought and in modern sociology, for example economic materialism, differs not in its formal-logical character but in its content: religious, theistic fatalism of the Islamic type naturally promises a different outcome of development and portrays its course differently from the fatalism of economic materialism.
Fata volentem ducunt, nolentem trahunt.
A whole series of further features corresponds to this general passive-deterministic tendency of apocalyptic thought. Although considered separately they also admit of particular explanations, as a whole they harmonise with one another. These features are the familiar pseudonymity of the apocalypses, the symbolism of numbers and beasts, and the customary manner of portraying the past and present in the future tense, as a prediction made before they occurred, that is, of resorting to vaticinium post eventum, ‘prophecy after the event’. Taken together, they characterise the logical nature of apocalyptic thought, bringing it in this respect, sit venia verbo, ‘if I may be pardoned the expression’, close to modern ‘sociology’ with its abstract schemes.
The prophets spoke in the first person. They uttered aloud what they later wrote in books. They themselves were direct, active participants in the historical drama. Pseudonymity is therefore generally so uncharacteristic of prophecy. Admittedly, even in the prophetic books there are passages of an entirely apocalyptic character, but these germs of the apocalyptic literature to come are numerically submerged in their other contents. Conversely, pseudonymity constitutes a general and inevitable feature of apocalyptic writing, with its passively contemplative disposition. Here it is characteristic, and apparently has not yet received sufficient scholarly attention, that most pseudonyms are adopted as pure conventions, without particular concern for their plausibility, sometimes, on the contrary, with their fictitious and conventional character openly emphasised: Enoch, Baruch, Ezra, the patriarchs, Adam and Eve, the Sibyls. Strictly speaking these are not pseudonyms but rather titles, manifest conventions which, it seems to me, could not even then have deceived anyone about the supposed authorship of the persons named in the heading. Rather, these attributions may be understood as designating a particular school or tendency in whose spirit a given work was written, rather like all the various ‘isms’ of today. Even allowing for the age’s entire lack of critical care and its astonishing historical naïvety, which accommodated obvious incongruities, this significance of collective pseudonymity remains unrefuted. Pseudonymity corresponded to the impersonal or supra-personal character of the content of apocalyptic works. Again, we may perhaps approach an understanding of this peculiarity more easily by explaining it through a comparison with modern science, which apocalyptic literature, in its own fashion, wished to be for its own age. Science is impersonal or supra-personal; the proclamation of one or another of its truths by a particular scholar is merely a biographical and historical fact, having no significance for the truth itself. Once proclaimed and accepted, it becomes wholly independent of and alien to its spiritual father. Such too are the truths of apocalyptic thought, disclosed in visions and symbols. The prophets too had visions, heard the voice of God and proclaimed His will to the people. But their visions and revelations almost always had a definite, practical character, were related to a concrete occasion and connected with their practical mission; they were by no means intended to gratify anyone’s theoretical curiosity. The prospect of the future opened before them not in its general lawfulness but within the bounds of a particular historical horizon. This explains both the conditional and relative character of the prophecies and all the massive scale, and sometimes the contradictoriness, of their images piled one upon another: images impossible to disentangle without the guiding indications of the period’s history. Without establishing the place, time, occasion and circumstances, it is often simply impossible to understand what the prophet wished to say. This peculiarity of prophecy, which wholly prevents its conversion into an oracle for divining future events, and therefore excludes its literal, direct interpretation, makes it at the same time profoundly alive, historically concrete and tied to a given place and time. Conversely, apocalyptic literature deliberately refuses to attach itself to place and time; it aspires to abstract objectivity. It therefore consciously inscribes Enoch’s name over ideas born in the first century BC, thereby indicating their supra-historical significance. The visions and images disclosed to the apocalyptist also, in the overwhelming majority of cases, apart from the Prophet Daniel and III Ezra, possess an entirely impersonal character. They are disclosed as an object of knowledge, but neither authorise nor oblige the beholder of mysteries to do anything; indeed, he does not appear in person but hides behind a conventional symbolic pseudonym, just as an individual scholar hides and disappears within the impersonal collective of science. In these respects apocalyptic literature can be likened to the science of that age, and indeed not to a science of the concrete and historical, but to an abstract, theoretical science, corresponding most closely to that very problematic discipline of our own day which calls itself sociology.
This same abstract-sociological character of apocalyptic thought is also disclosed to us by its predilection for the traditional symbolism of numbers and animals, which became its conventional language or literary manner; consequently, an entirely definite conception of a particular literary genre and style is associated with it. Here again, extensive investigations and disputes in the history of religion and in exegesis can be, and are, conducted concerning the origin of each of these symbols and numbers. But leaving these to themselves, one cannot fail to be struck by the highly abstract schematism into which historical events are cast in this literature. After all, to portray the whole of world history as the succession and struggle of a few apocalyptic beasts is, in its own fashion, just as bold an act of logical abstraction and symbolism as we find in such present-day sociological concepts as ‘mode of production’, ‘development of the productive forces’, ‘feudalism’, ‘natural economy’, ‘capitalism’, and so forth. A logical counterpart to apocalyptic representations of the history of kingdoms as a succession of rams, goats, plants, clouds, waters and the like can be found in contemporary scholarly literature, for instance in Marx’s celebrated preface to Zur Kritik der politischen Oekonomie, where all history is first divided into two parts, Vorgeschichte u. Geschichte, ‘prehistory and history’, and the first part is then further divided into several symbolically designated epochs: slavery, feudalism, capitalism. These are new signs for the old symbols of apocalyptic literature. We have grown so accustomed to these historical symbols that we fail entirely to notice their abstract and conventional character, whereas in their logical structure they are, after all, those same apocalyptic beasts which seem strange and alien to us only because of their horns and hair, and by no means because of their logical nature. Many sociological schemes could easily be transposed directly into the language of apocalyptic symbolism. This schematism and rationalism of apocalyptic thought is revealed with particular clarity in its predilection not only for predictions of the future but also for vaticinium post eventum, prophecy after the event. To regard the latter as mere charlatanry or the product of exceptional credulity would itself be scholarly credulity. It is enough to notice that in several apocalypses, in Jubilees, the Testament of the Twelve Patriarchs and the Life of Adam and Eve, the whole history of the Israelite people from the creation of Adam is narrated in the future tense. Yet one cannot seriously suppose that it could have occurred to anyone to pass off the contents of a biblical narrative known to everyone as prophecy in the proper sense. The use of the future tense alike for past, present and future events within a certain general perspective has the purpose of disclosing their inner necessity, their objective religious lawfulness, in whose light all are represented as connected links in a single causal chain. This is exactly the same task that modern ‘sociology’ sets itself, claiming to explain the past in accordance with laws and to predict the future. In this Auguste Comte and Karl Marx join hands with the ancient anonymous apocalyptists. Admittedly, owing to the abstract-symbolic character of apocalyptic images, the ‘revelations’ of the apocalypses in fact concealed more than they revealed, and themselves require explanations and interpretations. Thus one can speak here of predicting the future only in a very qualified sense; but one must speak no less guardedly of the predictions of modern sociology, which lacks even the vividness of the artistic, massive images of apocalyptic literature and operates solely with cold, abstract, almost mathematical symbols. Prediction of the future in the precise sense of predetermining future events is, of course, equally absent in both. The concepts of sociology are generalisations, or more precisely abstractions from a certain mass of facts, and are their logical symbols; the images of apocalyptic literature are also a distinctive kind of generalisation, made not discursively but intuitively, as artistic images generally originate. But, of course, the entire difference in the content of the lawfulness established in ancient apocalyptic thought and modern sociology remains in force. In the former it is determined by religious fate, the ‘scientifically known’ will of the Deity, transcendent and supernatural in relation to the world; in the latter, by the ‘development of the productive forces’ or some other ‘law of the development of society’, by immanent, natural necessity. The sources of this determination are defined differently; its character remains identical. Thus, in a certain sense one may say that apocalyptic literature wished to be the sociology of its age. If we further recall that the apocalypses abundantly included information from other and most diverse fields, we may say that apocalyptic literature in general claimed to be the scientific encyclopaedia of its age. As regards other fields of knowledge, the present development of science reduces the Jewish apocalyptists’ natural-scientific worldview to childish babble. But as regards sociology, it seems to me that here, in epistemological terms, it stands on the same level as modern sociology, since both set themselves an equally mistaken and internally contradictory logical task: to create an abstract science of the historical, that is, of the concrete, but with the aim of using these abstract concepts, whose content is poorer than that concrete reality, to predetermine, to predict, that concrete reality. Ne sutor ultra crepidam! ‘Let the cobbler not go beyond the sandal!’
Ne sutor ultra crepidam!
Apocalyptic Literature and the Philosophy of History
Alongside a scientific-sociological understanding of apocalyptic images, it is also possible to approach them from an entirely different side, the metaphysical. Apocalyptic images can be interpreted not only as abstract schemes of empirical sociology, but also as symbols of the philosophy of history. Whereas the former sets itself the task of studying empirical lawfulness and recognises only an evolutionary-mechanical process of a purely natural character, the latter seeks to determine history’s inner, transcendent, meta-historical purpose, and thereby interprets it as a process that is not only causal but also teleological. Although the apocalyptists employ sociological methods of thought, in their interests and problems they go beyond sociology: their aim is not sociology but the philosophy of history. With the anguish of despair, with ardent passion, with undying hope in his heart, the apocalyptist fixes his clouded gaze upon the historical distance, where the mysterious blue line of the horizon both conceals and half reveals the distances of the future; and the seer’s soul is filled with the living tremor of this mystery. What, then, does his eye discern on that horizon?
To answer this question more distinctly, and it holds the key to understanding the most fundamental peculiarities of apocalyptic thought, we must first offer a brief discussion of the problems of the philosophy of history and the theory of progress. In general, a twofold orientation in history is possible. In the one case history is regarded as a process leading towards the attainment of a certain goal beyond it, yet still immanent to history and attainable by its forces. Let us provisionally call this view chiliastic (chiliasm is the thousand-year kingdom in which good triumphs on earth and in history). Every theory of progress is chiliastic in this sense, whether religious or non-religious: one may speak not only of Jewish and Christian chiliasm, but also of philosophical chiliasm (of which Kant speaks in ‘Streit der Fakultäten, cultural and socialist chiliasm. The particular content of chiliastic conceptions may vary, but the formal properties of chiliasm as a historical horizon, a historically visible though distant goal of history, remain unchanged. I have compared chiliasm to the historical horizon, and this comparison can be taken further. Does the horizon exist in reality? Both yes and no. On the one hand it is undoubtedly only our projection in perspective, and in this sense chiliasm is a deception of our sight. On the other hand, this illusion results from the real facts of the earth’s spherical shape and our planet’s position in astronomical space. Living under these conditions, we cannot fail to see the horizon and to take it into practical account. We know that the horizon is unattainable and constantly recedes from us whenever we attempt to approach it, but we cannot help striving towards it and keeping it before our eyes as an ultimate goal, if not in a geographical then in a spiritual sense. This contradictory, antinomic character of our historical horizon, with the blue line of chiliasm running along the very boundary between the transcendent and the this-worldly, is bound up with the general form of our empirical existence, with its temporality and discursiveness. We have a need for wholeness, bearing within ourselves the image of the absolute; but remaining in the fetters of temporality, we contain this absoluteness, this integral life, only in parts. Not wholeness but fragmentation, a constant movement in time, is our lot. Yet it is precisely through this fundamental contradiction, between the absoluteness and wholeness of our spirit’s demands and the discursiveness and temporality of the form of our existence, that the life of the individual and of all historical humanity becomes a constant movement, a constant succession of bearings and perspectives. Humanity must move for ever, since it cannot stop, after the image of the ‘Wandering Jew’. The historical series is always differentiated but never integrated. The historical horizon is always visible to us but never draws nearer. History is a process in time, but also an infinite one, since it cannot stop; the temporality, discursiveness and conditionality of everything historical are not its accidental property, accidentia, but its very essence, essentia.
Progress is infinite, but with that ‘bad infinity’, negative rather than positive, of which Hegel taught. Chiliasm as the ideal of history is in this sense precisely the same kind of category as the ideal of reason in Kant’s system. Scientific experience, by its very concept as established by Kant, cannot come to an end; but at the same time, and precisely for this reason, there exists the ideal of reason, engendered by a thirst for integral knowledge. The critique of reason explains the origin and meaning of this ideal, but also establishes its formal character, devoid of any determinate content. Like the ideal of history, chiliasm, the ideal of reason is absolute only in its form, having no absolute content. The latter belongs to the transcendent realm of things in themselves, which shatters the very form of temporality and discursiveness. If the historical series can be conceived as integrated at all, it can be so only outside the form of temporality, beyond the bounds of history. Thus the contradictory nature of the fundamental historical category, the ideal of progress or chiliasm, testifies to the non-absolute, non-final, conditional character of history in general. It also tells us that the noumenon of history, its actual absolute content, can disclose itself only beyond history’s bounds, and therefore cannot enter history itself, its phenomenology with its temporal, conditional and relative aims, except formally. History has its noumenon; the historical series can be integrated; but this noumenon is wholly transcendent, otherworldly, ‘not of this world’, outside history or above history. In history everything is relative. Hence chiliasm is merely the form of the absolute in history, that is, of the conditionally or relatively absolute, as a projection of infinite historical movement. But this does not diminish the full importance of chiliasm, its irreplaceability and ineradicability. It is the living nerve of history: historical creativity, sweep and enthusiasm are bound up with this chiliastic feeling. Of course, this is not the Kingdom of God on earth or in history, for to conceive of the Kingdom of God in the form of temporality and discursiveness, in the domain of particulars without the universal, involves a contradictio in adjecto, a contradiction in terms. Nevertheless, if history has its noumenon, if a metaphysically necessary stage of being is passed through in it, then chiliasm as history’s motive force also represents a certain positive religious value. But it is a means of orientation only in the horizontal plane, only in the historical cross-section, in the sphere of history’s discursive, immanent content; one should never forget this significance and its limitations.
Chiliasm in this formal sense exists for all people irrespective of their views, just as time and space, with its horizon, exist practically for everyone. For many people a chiliastic orientation in history, or ‘theory of progress’, constitutes their only philosophy of life, satisfying them wholly and making them indifferent and insensitive to the possibilities of another religious orientation, transcendent rather than immanent: an orientation not only in the horizontal but also in the vertical cross-section, not only in Euclidean but also in other dimensions. In practice, the chiliastic theory of progress plays the role of an immanent religion for many people, especially in our age with its pantheistic tendency. For such people the question is exhausted by one or another apparently scientific theory of progress. But for a religious understanding of the world, this by no means exhausts the question. Alongside an understanding of history as the work of human beings, entrusted to them and accomplished by human powers, there arises the question of the destinies of the world and humanity as the work of God, as His creative act, as a supernatural intervention in the life of the world that tears the delicate fabric of the immanent. The world created by God can also be re-created or transfigured by Him. The world can be renewed in a miraculous, supernatural manner, and then, in the customary expression of apocalyptic literature, this age (αἰών) will give way to a new aeon, and the number of these aeons may be indefinitely great (Origen). Thus we approach the ‘doctrine of the last things’, which lie beyond the bounds not only of history but of this world itself, with its discursiveness, space and time: eschatology. Even if he wished, a human being cannot remain exclusively within the immanent and temporal and wholly eliminate every thought of a possible interruption, not of time but of temporality itself, of a passage beyond its boundary, even if to an unknown destination. No one has ever experienced, or will experience under the present conditions of being, the final destinies of the world, the world’s transcensus, its passage beyond itself; and these might not trouble consciousness were it not for the birth and death of other people, together with the inevitable prospect of one’s own death. These are transcendent acts which, although occurring in time, in their content break or abolish this form of temporality; they prevent us from resting content with the immanent alone. A child of two worlds, a human being may forget his origin and lose a living sense of connection with the other world, lose the experience of the transcendent alongside that of the immanent; but he cannot be unaware of his impending departure from this world, and this is why eschatology and its problems cannot be uprooted from human consciousness. Clearly, particular eschatological conceptions are closely connected with the general metaphysical doctrine of God and the world, and represent a more or less consistent, more or less decisive inference from the premises of religious ontology. From materialist philosophy one may infer that personal death is a transcensus into non-being, while the world-process is a perpetuum mobile, or eternal cycle; from religious philosophy an inference of entirely different content must be drawn, and moreover one corresponding to the character of the particular religion. In general, eschatology is the vital nerve of religious doctrines, and their comparative-historical study is most interesting from this side as well. Whereas in chiliasm humanity sees a historical goal before it, in eschatology it discerns above itself and beyond this world with its history a supernatural goal. The world matures towards its transfiguration by the creative power of the Deity, and this supernatural, miraculous intervention of a deus ex machina, a ‘god from the machine’, inevitably assumes the character of a world catastrophe in the conceptions of a humanity that makes its own history by its own powers and feels firmly established upon this earth. This transcensus of the world from one aeon to another, inexpressible in the language of earthly concepts, can evidently be expressed only in symbolic images of the falling of the moon, sun and stars, the shaking of the heavenly elements, a world conflagration, and so forth. This transfiguration of the world is prepared by the spiritual process occurring within it, the struggle of opposing forces. The world-process, and within it the historical process, is also regarded in eschatology as a teleological process leading to the resolution of the world’s tragedy and thereby establishing its purpose and meaning; but for humanity this goal remains wholly transcendent and in this sense independent of humanity. A human being still has the possibility of hastening his own death by suicide, but is not granted the power to avert its inexorable approach; as for the death of the world, he knows neither its day nor its hour, for it is wholly the work of the Heavenly Father’s will and omnipotence. Hence eschatology, in complete contrast to chiliasm, can never become a historical goal attained through human action, and in general remains beyond human reach, which is why many so easily cast aside the very thought of it. Eschatology offers an entirely different orientation in the world from chiliasm. The latter is active and energetic in life to the same degree that the former is passive and quietistic. Before the face of eternity all historical values fade and evaporate, or undergo a radical revaluation. Andrei Bolkonsky taking part in the Battle of Austerlitz with a full awareness of the historical importance of the unfolding events, and the same Andrei lying on the field of Austerlitz and gazing into the deep sky with its drifting clouds, vividly express the transition between these two perceptions of the world, which almost exclude and mutually negate one another. We now experience the transcendent as a reality only in the depths of our spirit, in communion with the Church, ‘the Kingdom and not of this world’, the living organism of the transcendent; on the basis of this living experience we try to comprehend and feel life religiously, to divine the noumenon of history. Yet it yields reluctantly to our intuitive divination, remaining closed to us insofar as we live by historical phenomenology, by empirical experience. Chiliasm inevitably disappears from our field of vision when we raise our heads upwards; but when, wearied by contemplating the azure and powerless to surrender ourselves to it for long, we lower our heads and look before us, we find ourselves surrounded and enclosed on every side by the historical horizon. After the Transfiguration the apostles found themselves in their former surroundings on Mount Tabor, and the higher, authentic reality that had opened before them for a moment closed again.
We have tried to distinguish these two planes, the eschatological and the chiliastic, and to contrast the two orders of ideas, feelings and conceptions. Returning now to Jewish apocalyptic literature, we must establish that its contents embrace both these orders, but in a state of hopeless, chaotic confusion. This confusion produces a series of substitutions and confusions of concepts, giving apocalyptic thought precisely that specific character through which it played so fateful a role in the history of the Jewish people, dulling their sense of reality and historical realism, blinding them with utopias, and fostering religious adventurism and the urge to extort a miracle. Owing to this lack of differentiation in its conceptions, it could at the same time play the role of a fermentation vat in which a new leaven, Christianity, was fermenting. In the apocalyptist’s vision, as in icon painting, the historical, chiliastic and eschatological planes merge into a single image, flat rather than perspectival, producing fantastic, sometimes nightmarish but sometimes enchanting images. Historical aspirations are attributed an immediately eschatological significance; chiliasm, as the sum of earthly hopes and historical expectations, is likewise projected eschatologically. Yet the human plan of history and the ways of Providence, incomprehensible to human beings and therefore irrational or supra-rational for them, are incommensurable: human aims do not correspond to God’s aims. A crude anthropomorphism in the understanding of history was rejected and condemned on the road to Caesarea Philippi, when the apostle whose lips had just uttered for the first time the confession of faith in Christ, a word ‘not of flesh and blood but of the Spirit of God’, this apostle, who had equated his chiliastic conceptions with God’s ways, was told: ‘Get thee behind Me, Satan; thou art a stumbling-block to Me, because thou thinkest not of the things of God but of the things of men’ (Matthew 16:23).
History is commensurate with humanity only in the sense that it gives scope to human activity and teleology; in this sense history is made by human beings, or more precisely with their participation, which thus becomes a cosmic factor and enters into the general cosmic order. But both the personal will of the individual and humanity’s collective creativity encounter an external boundary in the objectively determined course of things, which is essentially mysterious and irrational. ‘At that time some came and told Him of the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. Jesus said to them in reply: Think ye that these Galileans were more sinful than all the Galileans, because they suffered thus? No, I tell you … or think ye that those eighteen upon whom the tower of Siloam fell and overcame them were more guilty than all who dwell in Jerusalem? No, I tell you’ (Luke 13:1–4). And when He who by His divine nature is the Logos of the world, in the human anguish of the self-emptying at Gethsemane, prayed as a human being, as an individual, and therefore as a part of the whole, to be delivered from the cup, He opposed His particular human will to the good, universal will of the Father, incomprehensible to a consciousness that isolates itself, and added: ‘Nevertheless, not My will but Thine be done’ (Luke 22:42). The human and divine wills are incommensurable, like the whole and a part that separates itself and posits itself as the whole. Hence the paths of a history planned by human beings and the paths of eschatology guided by a Higher Power are not identical. In other words, chiliasm and eschatology do not correspond and are not commensurable; they belong to different religious-metaphysical planes. This is why their apparent independence of one another is so sharply emphasised in the Gospels: ‘that day’ will come when no one expects it, when everyone feels especially secure and calmly attends to everyday business, marries and buys, as in the days of Noah … Jewish apocalyptic thought, conversely, effectively acknowledged this commensurability and included chiliasm among the details of eschatology. But it then became possible, and even necessary, to conceive historical or chiliastic goals as attainable by eschatological means, that is, with the participation of superhuman forces, as a deùs ex machina, a ‘god from the machine’; and eschatological images began to be filled with human, all-too-human content. There arose an intense expectation, fateful for Judaea, of a historical miracle, of supernatural assistance for political, national and economic purposes. Against this background Jewish messianism develops in all the contradictory complexity of its conceptions.
Different paths of apocalyptic thought intersect in the conception of the messiah as at a central knot, and it belongs simultaneously to all the different planes that Jewish apocalyptic thought confuses into one. The messiah, sometimes a personal, sometimes a collective image of the Jewish people, especially in later Judaism; sometimes a human being, an earthly king; sometimes a divine and supramundane being; sometimes mortal, as in III Ezra, sometimes immortal, enters into different conceptions and belongs to different eschatological series. He liberates his people, punishes their enemies, sometimes cruelly, and establishes an earthly kingdom with Jerusalem as its capital. Yet he also attends the resurrection of the dead and participates as judge in the Last Judgement after the end of this aeon. In that intense expectation of a new aeon by which apocalyptic thought lives, the messiah played the role of a living bridge joining both aeons and leading the world after him from the old aeon into the new. This mingling of several perspectives manifests itself in a multitude of particulars, breaks up into details both great and small, and can be traced only through detailed investigation of the relevant documents. We shall dwell only upon the broadest and most fundamental features.
The Messianic Kingdom
Apocalyptic literature, with its vivid imagery and at the same time its unbridled fantasy, naturally promises no clarity of philosophical distinctions. The boundary separating the historical from the eschatological is now entirely erased, now deepened until impassable, now so widened as to allow room for a special transitional state belonging wholly to neither sphere: the thousand-year kingdom of the messiah, so-called chiliasm in the proper sense of the word. Since most apocalypses were composed of different fragments at different times, all three possibilities are sometimes realised even within a single apocalypse, as in Ethiopic Enoch and, in part, III Ezra. A systematic treatment of this material can therefore proceed historically, with reference to individual documents, or classificatorily, by cataloguing individual statements under established headings. We shall confine ourselves to a few of the most striking examples, which also possess the greatest religious-philosophical interest. We find a portrayal of the messiah as national leader and liberator, and at the same time as illuminated by the light of divine righteousness, in the Psalms of Solomon, specifically Psalm 17, a classic document of Jewish messianism. It first portrays Israel’s wretched condition as punishment for its sin; in the second part messianic hopes find expression.
‘23. Look, O Lord, and raise up for them their king, the son of David, at the time which Thou, O God, hast chosen … 24. And gird him with strength, that he may strike down unrighteous rulers. 25. That he might cleanse Jerusalem of the heathen who trample it in destruction.’
‘27. That he might destroy lawless nations by the word of his mouth … and convict sinners by the word of their heart. 28. And he shall gather a holy people, whom he shall lead in righteousness, and shall judge the tribes of the people … 29. And he shall not allow unrighteousness to dwell among them.’
‘32. And he shall have the heathen nations to serve him beneath his temple.’
‘36. And there is no unrighteousness among them in his days, for all are holy and their king is Christ (the messiah), the Lord (κύριος).’
‘41. And he himself is pure of sin, that he may rule over a great people, convict rulers and destroy sinners by the power of his word …’
‘46. He shall lead them all in equality, and there shall be no arrogance among them to do them violence.’
Psalm 18, verse 7: ‘Blessed are those born in those days, for they shall see the good things of the Lord which he shall do for the generation to come. 8. They shall be under the rod of chastisement of the Lord’s Christ, in the fear of their God, in the wisdom of spirit and righteousness and strength.’
This picture of the messianic kingdom, an Old Testament Zukunftstaat, ‘state of the future’, is projected within the limits of historical space and time; it is separated from the present only by a certain interval, after which a kingdom opens that satisfies not only the burning aspirations of those who hunger for righteousness, but also a humiliated and affronted national feeling. Messianism merges with nationalism, a feature characteristic of all apocalyptic literature. Alongside other conceptions, the expectation of a messianic kingdom of the character attributed to it in the seventeenth Psalm of Solomon is common to almost all apocalyptic literature and constituted the people’s faith at that time. We know this well from the Gospel story, where we continually observe the desire of both the apostles and the people to turn the Saviour into the expected messiah. This expectation is shared both by Palestinian Jewry, to whose circle the Psalms of Solomon undoubtedly belong, and by the Jewish diaspora, however strong Hellenistic influences upon it may have been. We encounter this hope even in Philo, for all his spiritualism. It also entered the daily prayer recited three times, the so-called Shemoneh Esreh, the prayer Habinenu, an abridgement of the Shemoneh Esreh, and the prayer Kaddish, and then became firmly rooted in Talmudic literature.
In other cases the same messianic kingdom is projected at the end of history, yet still beyond its bounds, on that very border where history and eschatology, the empirical and the supra-empirical, meet. Such is the character of Jewish chiliasm as encountered in the most important apocalypses, in Enoch, III Ezra and Baruch. Acquaintance with this circle of conceptions is particularly interesting because they possess extraordinary tenacity in history and, unbeknown to many, also have enormous significance for our own present in the form of social utopias.
In the introductory chapters of Ethiopic Enoch the condition of the righteous, although after the judgement but evidently not yet in the final age, is portrayed in the following terms:
‘But the portion of the elect shall be light, peace and joy, and they shall inherit the earth (compare Psalm 36:11; Matthew 5:5). But you, godless ones, shall be struck by the curse. To the elect wisdom shall be given; they shall all live and shall not sin, neither through inattention nor through pride … They shall neither transgress nor sin throughout the days of their life, nor shall they die through the wrath of God, but shall fulfil the number of their days. Their life shall be filled with peace, and their years of peace shall be many, in eternal joy and in peace all the days of their life’ (I, 7–9).
III Ezra too, written, we must not forget, after the destruction of Jerusalem, speaks of the kingdom of the messiah that preceded the general resurrection and judgement:
