‘My son the messiah shall be revealed with those who are with him, and those who remain shall enjoy themselves for four hundred years; and after these years my son Christ (the messiah) shall die, and all people who have breath’ (7:28–29; compare 12:32, 34).
Pseudo-Enoch describes the extraordinary fertility of the earth ‘cultivated in justice’ (10:18–19). Nor does the author of the Syriac Apocalypse of Baruch, approximately a contemporary of III Ezra, spare his colours in describing the blessedness of this messianic age. Here the approach of the age of the messiah is accompanied by the following signs:
‘And Behemoth shall be revealed in his land, and Leviathan shall come out of the sea, and both mighty sea monsters, created by me on the fifth day of the creation of the world and kept for this time, shall then be food for all who remain. And the earth shall yield its fruit ten thousandfold, and on one vine there shall be a thousand branches, and on each branch a thousand clusters, and each cluster shall bear a thousand grapes, and each grape shall yield a kor of wine. And those who have hungered shall live in luxury; moreover, every day they shall see miracles. For winds shall go forth from me to bring with them, from morning to morning, the scent of fragrant fruits; and at the end of the day the clouds shall sprinkle healing dew. And at that time supplies of manna shall again fall from above, and they shall eat it in those years, for they have survived the end’ (29–30).
Elsewhere the thousand-year kingdom is depicted with these further features:
‘And when he has subdued everything in the world and seated himself for ever upon the throne of his kingdom, then grace shall be revealed and rest shall appear. And then health shall descend with the dew, and sickness shall depart. Cares, anxieties and sighs shall disappear among people, and joy shall dwell throughout the earth, and no one shall die prematurely, nor shall anything unpleasant ever happen suddenly. And lawsuits, complaints, disputes, vengeance, blood, desires, envy, hatred and all such things shall be subject to a curse, for they shall be uprooted … And wild animals must come out of the forest and serve humanity, and vipers and dragons shall emerge from their holes to place themselves at the disposal of little children (compare Isaiah 11:6). Women too shall then give birth without pain and shall not suffer while carrying the fruit in their wombs. And in those days the reapers shall not grow weary, nor those who stand be exhausted by work. For the work shall continue of itself together with those who work in perfect rest’ (73–74).
But these dreams of a national Zukunftstaat, a ‘state of the future’, and the hope of its miraculous realisation are usually joined to the solemn, sombre eschatological prospects of the resurrection of the dead and the Last Judgement, with its accompanying cosmic and historical catastrophes, after which everything begins anew: a new earth and a new heaven. God will manifest Himself in the world, and this manifestation will naturally and inevitably be a Last Judgement for all humanity, a source of ineffable blessedness for some and equally ineffable torment for others. Eschatology constitutes an important part of the content of apocalyptic literature, and its fundamental ideas were sanctioned by Christianity, with the final difference that Christ took the central place in it. But in accordance with the purpose of this essay, a detailed study of eschatology proper lies beyond its bounds.
Attention should also be drawn to another feature of the apocalyptic perception of history. This feature is a sense of history’s profound tragedy, naturally accompanied by a hopeless pessimism concerning the present and therefore disposing one all the more strongly to expect a historical miracle through which the era of the messianic kingdom will be ‘revealed’. It required this exceptional combination, on the one hand, of the tragic fate of the Jewish people and the complete historical hopelessness of their position, and, on the other, of their religious idealism, which bowed before nothing, their faith in God’s omnipotence and justice and in Israel’s unquestionable election by God, for such a disposition to be born from the interaction of these factors. Without any exaggeration one may say that no people has withstood such a historical test as the Jewish people did in this age. All the grotesque sensuality of apocalyptic conceptions must be attributed to a considerable degree to these external conditions, while the astonishing and incomparable tenacity of religious hope must be ascribed to the religious genius of the people, through whose awareness the soul of the world reached out towards ‘Him who comes in the name of the Lord’. And if only a few recognised Him when He came, this nationwide impulse nevertheless created the spiritual atmosphere for receiving Him whom Simeon the God-Receiver, the aged representative of his ancient people, awaited as ‘a light for revelation to the nations and the glory of Thy people Israel’ (Luke 2:32).
To the apocalyptist the messianic kingdom appears not as a natural continuation and historical development of the present condition, but as an entirely different creation. ‘This aeon’ and ‘the future aeon’: this is the fundamental antithesis with which he operates, the formal categories in which he thinks about the historical problem. What separates the present aeon from the future is not gradual evolution or progress, at the end of which, after all history’s ordeals, everything ends with a fine little feast and a wedding, as in the conceptions of contemporary socialism, but a cosmic and historical catastrophe. The present age exists only for the sake of the future aeon; in that aeon lies the resolution of all the riddles, apparent contradictions and injustices of existing reality. Particularly characteristic in this respect is III Ezra, the most sympathetic and closest to the modern age. Its author’s soul is wholly eaten away by doubt; with a force recalling the Book of Job, he questions the meaning of evil in the world and in history, the incompatibility of the perdition of sinners with God’s goodness, and the undeserved sufferings of the Jewish people, whose oppressors are by no means distinguished by virtue. To all these perplexities a single answer is given, pointing to the age to come: ‘This age hastens swiftly towards its end and cannot contain what is promised to the righteous in future times’ (4:26–27).
The birth of the new aeon is accompanied by birth pangs, historical and cosmogonic. The apocalypses devote much space to describing these messianic pangs, and with them the signs in nature and in history. The darkening of the sun and moon and disorders in the world of stars, the appearance in the sky of swords, horsemen and men on foot, turmoil in nature, the appearance of the sun at night and the moon by day, bloody dew upon the trees, the turning of fresh water into salt water, and so on and so forth, will mark the coming of the end of the world. In human society there is the same disorder and dissolution of every bond, the triumph of sin and godlessness. As though possessed by madness, people begin to destroy one another. Nation rises against nation, kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes and famine. All these calamities become more intense as the end draws nearer; finally there appears the personal embodiment of evil, the antichrist or Beliar, a conception which, as is well known, has deep Old Testament roots. The forces of evil muster with the greatest ferocity against the chosen people and the holy city. Only at the last moment of utter despair, unbearable torment and the complete triumph of evil does the resolution of the historical drama arrive. The messiah appears, defeats the antichrist, gathers the scattered sons of Israel, restores Jerusalem and inaugurates the thousand-year kingdom. In the background of this picture stands the eschatological prospect: the resurrection of the dead, the Last Judgement and the final sentence upon the righteous and sinners, the renewal of the world, the Kingdom of God (malkuth Yahweh), whose expectation permeates this entire age. It would be utterly impossible within the bounds of this essay to reproduce the details of unbridled apocalyptic fantasy, especially since this collation has already been made more than once in the specialist literature. The general meaning of this whole portrayal is that human means are powerless where primordial mystical elements struggle and rage. The noumenal nature of the world is deeper than any historical phenomenality in which the active human will finds support and points of application. The world ripens independently of it, as in the vivid comparison in III Ezra: ‘Go, ask a pregnant woman: when the nine months are fulfilled, can her womb retain its fruit? I said: it cannot. Then he said: like the womb are the dwellings of souls in the underworld’ (4:41–42). The objective lawfulness of the cosmic and historical process is beyond the reach of the human will; its aims are wholly disproportionate to its means. Yet, as we already know, a twofold conclusion may be drawn from this: either towards complete quietism or towards historical adventurism which believes in the support of miraculous power, a deus ex machina, and therefore wholly fails to measure its strength against its appointed task. Fatalism can be two-sided in its practical conclusions, and it was precisely its second interpretation that predominated in the history of Israel, as later in the history of Islam. Revolutionary Zealotism combined historical despair with fatalistic self-assurance, joined to a secret hope of provoking and hastening a cosmic and eschatological catastrophe. Messianism was the central nerve of the entire spiritual organism of the Israelite people in this age.
Apocalyptic Thought in the New Testament
The concepts and dispositions of apocalyptic thought form the historical background of earliest Christianity. It arose on the soil of apocalyptic thought, initially as one of its currents. Understanding this significance of apocalyptic thought is an important acquisition of modern historical scholarship, which, in accordance with its general tendency, is inclined to exaggerate it still further, regarding the Founder of Christianity as an apocalyptist blinded by messianic self-consciousness.
In the time of Christ the people awaited a Messiah, a King of Israel, who was to ‘restore the kingdom to Israel’ (Acts 1:6), and at first they saw precisely such a messiah in Him. They therefore expected corresponding actions and self-manifestations from Him. This expectation was so deeply rooted that even His closest disciple, following his confession of Christ, that act of faith, begins vehemently to contradict Him when the prospect of coming suffering and a shameful death, a picture of the future that was anything but messianic, began to emerge before him, thereby drawing upon himself the Saviour’s stern condemnation (Matthew 16:22–23; Mark 8:31–33). This conflict between two conceptions of the messiah’s vocation, the popular-apocalyptic, or more precisely chiliastic, and the new Christian one, runs throughout the Gospel story. The old gives way to the new not even after Golgotha and the Resurrection, when the disciples still continue to await the restoration of the kingdom of Israel, but only after Pentecost. The final severance of the newborn, the earliest Christian community, from the maternal umbilical cord of tradition occurs? only when, in the Apostle Peter’s first sermon, the sufferings of the cross and death become the central dogma of the new messiology, and are moreover regarded as foretold by the prophets (Acts 2:22–36), in whom previously only prophecies of the messiah’s earthly glorification had been read. Judaism and Christianity first came into direct collision as two different messiologies, as two branches of apocalyptic thought, grown from one root and outwardly clothed in an initial symbolism, sometimes almost identical but profoundly different in content. At this most burning and at the same time religiously intimate point, in their expectations of the future, they collided and parted as irreconcilable enemies, one with faith in the Messiah who had already come, the other with hostility towards Him as an impostor. In subsequent history the expectation of a messiah yet to come dies down and is covered with ashes, although, we think, it can hardly ever be extinguished altogether.
Jesus denied neither that He was the Messiah nor that He was King. He accepts Peter’s confession and Himself testifies before Pilate that He is King (Matthew 27:11; Mark 15:2; Luke 23:38; John 19:19–22). Whatever one’s attitude towards it, His messianic self-consciousness is the central fact of the Gospel story, increasingly acknowledged even by rationalist scholarship. Yet at the same time His kingdom is not of this world, and the fundamental apocalyptic idea that the Messiah must employ His supernatural power to establish an earthly kingdom, for historical and human purposes, is decisively rejected and condemned by Him, together with the whole conception of Jewish chiliasm. He rejects this supernatural help even on the terrible night of the betrayal at Gethsemane: ‘Or thinkest thou that I cannot now beseech My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels? How then shall the Scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?’ (Matthew 26:53–54). He says to Pilate: ‘My kingdom is not of this world; if My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight for Me, that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here’ (John 18:36).
Rejecting the messianic idea in its chiliastic interpretation, Jesus at the same time sanctions the eschatological ideas of apocalyptic thought. But the Gospel introduces a clear distinction between the chiliastic and eschatological planes, hitherto merged together, and, eliminating the former, reveals the latter all the more distinctly. ‘The Kingdom of God’, that expression with so many meanings, receives in the Gospel its specific, namely twofold, meaning: first, the Kingdom of God within us, as the religious good of communion with God in the Church, as the immediate experience of eternity amid the waves of temporality, of freedom in the fetters of necessity; and second, ‘the Kingdom of God coming in power’, as a result of the approach of the noumenal, and not merely empirical, upheaval of God towards creation and of the transfiguration of the world. The Kingdom of God is the soul’s personally religious, mystical contact with religious reality, the Church, and in it with Christ; yet its final advent also signifies the cessation of present empirical existence, a metaphysical upheaval, a change in the very foundation of the world in its relation to God. It is far from accidental that both the ‘pneumatic’ Gospel of John, in which the immanently religious character of the Kingdom of God is most clearly disclosed, and the Apocalypse, with its intense eschatology, are inscribed with the same name, that of the Apostle John. There is no contradiction between the two conceptions, because they refer to different planes. But no room whatever remains for a messianic Kingdom of God of this world, for Jewish chiliasm. Here the historical process is left to natural elements; history continues to be made by human beings and human beings alone, although as living religious persons they introduce into history the fructifying principle of the Kingdom of God, insofar as it really is within us and guides our actions, determining our feelings and dispositions. But for a Christian understanding of history it is impossible, and even sinful, when calculating the forces available for accomplishing a given historical task or attaining a particular historical goal, to include among them, figuratively speaking, regiments of angels as well. This is the same as basing calculations in a war with the Japanese not on the number of guns and trained troops, but on the number of icons assembled by Kuropatkin, even with the most devout veneration of them.
The eschatological chapters of the Synoptic Gospels, the so-called ‘Little Apocalypse’ (Matthew 24:3–44; Mark 13:3–32; Luke 15:22–37, 21:7–36), are undoubtedly connected in the external form of their symbolism with apocalyptic literature, as is obvious to anyone who has so much as acquainted himself with it. This symbolism is the historical ink in which the eschatological writings of the Gospel are inscribed. To deny or minimise this connection is equally inadmissible from the religious-historical, scholarly standpoint and from the religious one, since eternal content is expressed in a historically given, temporal form, clothed in historical flesh. Moreover, the broad development of apocalyptic and eschatological conceptions in the period under consideration appears, of course, by no means accidental. In a dim awareness the soul of the world reached towards the light of a new revelation, which appeared in the Messiah of Nazareth.
Only a specialised examination can establish the connection between the literary form of the Jewish apocalypses and that of the Gospel apocalypses. But whatever form this connection may assume in detail, the popular character of the Gospel apocalypse already hints at what is clear to the philosophising mind, namely their symbolic significance. These images function as symbols expressing the noumenal essences of a world transcendent to us. For the so-called ‘end of the world’ and the Second Coming of the Son of God do not belong among earthly, historical events of empirical reality that unfold in time and occur in such-and-such a year, as Beuningen and similar Adventists attempt to determine. It will occur in no year, nor in time at all, since it carries us beyond the very form of present temporality; it will occur outside time or, if one wishes, after time’s end, ‘and the Angel swore that there would be time no longer’ (Revelation 10:6), after the death of the world and humanity, which, like personal death, strictly speaking occurs outside time and constitutes the abolition of temporality. That cosmic transcensus which here, of course, presupposes the prior death of some and an instantaneous change, analogous to death, in others: ‘We shall not all die, but we shall all be changed, suddenly, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet’ (I Corinthians 5:52). Such ideas, concerning the realm of the transcendent, which is wholly inaccessible to empirical perception, can receive only symbolic expression, the images for which were taken from the ordinary language of apocalyptic literature. Hence every forced interpretation of the majestic, massive images of the end of the world, the Second Coming and the Last Judgement which applies to them the measures of historical events and chronological frameworks, rather than confining itself to elucidating their general religious ideas, represents not only the fruit of improper curiosity, an urge to peer through the veiled gates of cosmic death, and necessarily within it personal death, opened only as far as is needful, but also a straightforward methodological error.
A direct connection with apocalyptic literature in the New Testament is undoubtedly established by the ‘Revelation of St John’. For anyone acquainted with the original documents of apocalyptic literature, there can be no doubt that the New Testament Apocalypse belongs to the same literary type as the other apocalypses, and in this sense is not unique in its literary kind, but one of many works of this apocalyptically disposed age. Nor was it the only one in Christian literature, for other widely read apocalypses existed, although without canonical standing: the Christian parts of the Sibylline Prophecies and the Ascension of Isaiah, the Apocalypse of Peter, and finally the Shepherd of Hermas, which has also survived to our day, in visions.
In its date of origin too, the end of the first century, to which the most exacting and entirely independent criticism now assigns it, it is almost contemporary with the later Jewish apocalypses, for ex<ample>, III Ezra and Baruch. Yet this literary means emphasises still more strongly all the inner dissimilarity, and in part even opposition, between the New Testament Apocalypse and most works of Jewish apocalyptic literature, except perhaps the canonical Book of the Prophet Daniel. This difference is already apparent in a literary comparison, in which the entire uniqueness of the fiery images of our Apocalypse, a work moreover wholly individual, naturally emerges. But the difference will emerge still more deeply and fundamentally if we attend to the answers given in our Apocalypse to the questions posed by Jewish apocalyptic thought, and to the extent to which its messianic expectations are silently but expressively rejected and condemned by the New Testament Apocalypse. Only by understanding and feeling this shall we be convinced of how different the worlds before us are. Jewish apocalyptic literature is filled with expectations concerning the awaited messiah who has not yet come; at the centre of the New Testament Apocalypse stands the Messiah who has already come, the Word of God, the Lord Jesus. The former expected from the messiah’s coming the advent of the messianic kingdom and the overcoming of cosmic and historical tragedy. The latter depicts, after the Messiah’s coming, an intensification of the world’s tragedy, fresh efforts in evil’s struggle against good, and enormous successes of evil; the community of the faithful is persecuted and tormented and must arm itself with patience. The entire prospect of the messianic kingdom and rest, of the Kingdom of God on earth, falls into this abyss of cosmic tragedy, reopened and wider than before. In the furthest background the prospect of eschatology still remains, but now with its Christian definiteness: the Apocalypse ends with the ardent eschatological invocation, ‘Yea, come, Lord Jesus!’ Clearly, all the former messiology, all the hopes associated with the messiah’s earthly kingdom, are here rejected, freed from national narrowness and overcome in their sensuous-chiliastic interpretation. The impossibility of resolving historical tragedy within the bounds of history is affirmed here with renewed force. Only eschatology, with the images that precede it, the antichrist and the final torments and temptations, unites Jewish apocalyptic literature with the Christian Apocalypse. Thus a gulf opened between Judaism and Christianity, soon expressed in mutual estrangement passing into persecution. While the most active Jews awaited the chiliastic messiah, preparing his way through political and social revolution, the earliest Christian communities were gripped by a disposition not merely apolitical but wholly unworldly, a desire for and expectation of the immediate end of the world, the Second Coming and the final eschatological upheaval. Eschatology and messiology were the umbilical cord that initially bound Judaism and Christianity together, but they also constitute the point of their original and fundamental divergence. This is rooted, of course, in the mystical depths of religious perception of the world; it is complicated and disguised, but by no means overcome, even in our own day, and in general will remain until the times and seasons are fulfilled and, according to the Apostle Paul’s unfailing prophecy, the Judaeo-Christian quarrel ceases.
The problem of the Apocalypse belongs in general among those that have attracted attention in every age. This is not the place to dwell on the history of its exegesis, in which two principal channels were already established very early: a sensuous-historical understanding of the Apocalypse, roughly from Montanus onwards, and a spiritualist one, whose founder was the African bishop Tyconius in the fourth century. Studied as a literary document of its age, which for most present-day Protestant scholars now almost exhausts its significance, it is subjected to the action of various reagents commonly employed in historical criticism: dissections, comparative-historical and philological analysis, and so forth. There is neither possibility nor necessity of drawing any general conclusion from the entire motley variety of scholarly opinions, especially since acquaintance with the history of the question convinces one how few genuinely firm scholarly conclusions there are, and how many highly precarious, subjective and prejudiced views are introduced into it. The scholarly value of these investigations within their own field can by no means be denied, provided they do not overstep its boundaries in their conclusions. In the scholarly study of the Apocalypse, the earliest tendency to appear is the attempt to understand its individual features through the circumstances and events of the time when it was written (Zeitgeschichte, contemporary history). Whatever one’s attitude towards the Apocalypse, such study retains its importance by contributing to an understanding of at least one, and for many the only, possible meaning of its text. Literary criticism then appears, seeking to determine the Apocalypse’s original sources, Jewish or Christian, its compilation and the author’s tendency; the absence of an exact literary criterion is, of course, replaced by subjective estimation. This is work of the same kind as that undertaken by philologists on Homer, Plato and the New Testament authors. This method promises few positive results and often gives occasion for critical enthusiasms of an almost sporting character. Recently, on the initiative of Gunkel and Bousset, the religious-historical method, which seeks ancient myths of old religions in apocalyptic images, has made a stir. The search for religious traditions and analogies, the study of religious syncretism, is at present the most fashionable occupation, likewise sometimes turning into a scholarly sport.
The task of exegesis and historical criticism remains to employ various reagents in studying the Apocalypse as a historical document: the circumstances of its origin, its occasions, literary composition, language, grammar, syntax, and so forth. Yet in our conviction, whatever the shifting and constantly fluctuating results of this historical study of the Apocalypse, as of other sacred books, it is not this study but general religious premises, positive or negative in content, that establish the final judgement of and attitude towards the work. The historical circumstances in which a document originated, the reed and ink with which it was written, by no means predetermine the value of what is written. Within a given historical shell, beneath a given verbal phenomenon, there may lie content of abiding, noumenal significance, an inspiration not human but grace-given and divine. The general question of the possibility of such divine inspiration and religious revelation is connected with all the fundamental questions of a religious-philosophical worldview, the doctrine of God, Christ, the Church and the cosmos. It is certainly not resolved within the narrow bounds of painstaking religious-historical investigations, by which people now wish to exhaust the entire sphere of religious consciousness. Therefore, whatever the results of studying the Apocalypse as a historical document, it remains for us the word of God, a divinely inspired revelation concerning the destinies of the world and the Church. This, however, by no means eliminates the exceptionally mysterious character of the prophetic book. Its symbols remain a riddle for the intellect and religious consciousness, and every attempt to decipher them, to interpret them in detail, is inevitably accompanied by arbitrariness and subjectivism. It is therefore very important to establish a general standpoint concerning the significance and character of apocalyptic symbols. In its purpose the Apocalypse by no means presents a sociological generalisation and symbolic portrayal of the course of historical events as they are accessible to our experience. The Apocalypse is neither sociology nor a philosophy of history in the sense of a generalised portrayal of historical events symbolised in concepts, as may be said of most Jewish apocalypses. The subject of the Apocalypse is metahistory, the noumenal side of that universal process which reveals one of its sides to us as history. It is historical ontology, in which the inner mechanism of the cosmic and historical process is disclosed. The Apocalypse is a revelation not so much of the future as of what truly exists in the timeless depths of being and discloses itself in history as it matures. Revelation is needed not only to penetrate the future, but also to penetrate through the crust of phenomena into the realm of noumena. The events of the Apocalypse are prepared and unfold in two worlds, in heaven and on earth, in the world of spiritual powers and in human history; and the almost impenetrable partition separating the two worlds for us in our present condition does not exist for the seer, who discerns behind these events the spiritual powers that engender them. The destinies of the Church remain at the centre of this portrayal’s attention, and not only in earthly history but also beyond it. This metempirical cosmic tragedy is expressed in symbols often borrowed from the current apocalyptic vocabulary. Given the nature of their subject, they cannot be understood by us to the end, but only hint at the content behind them, which is assimilated according not only to the historical maturity of the age but also to personal religious maturity. For these same spiritual powers, rending the world through their conflict, are also recognised in personal religious experience; in this sense one may say that the individual soul too has its personal Apocalypse. The tragedy of history itself, rather than its external events, which constitute the subject of newspaper reporting or historical scholarship, becomes intelligible to us only in proportion to our personal spiritual experience and capacity to enter into it. What, for example, could the keeper of the Swiss hotel where Nietzsche lived during the period of Zarathustra have said about his sickly lodger, perhaps beyond the fact that he was an unassuming guest and paid punctually?
Several conclusions of a, so to speak, methodological character follow from such an understanding of the Apocalypse’s general content. First of all, its symbols do not refer at all to events in our empirical history, or at least do not correspond to it. The metaphysical picture of history does not coincide with its empirical picture. It is therefore fundamentally mistaken to decode them into events of concrete-historical, empirical content, almost of the sort reported in newspapers: for ex<ample>, invariably to see revolutions in earthquakes, cannons in the tails of locusts, and the like. Such interpretation often profanes the Apocalypse, turning its exposition into a special art of conjuring. There have been many enthusiasts for this occupation in every age, and there are not a few today. What is symbolised in the Apocalypse takes place in the world of souls, spirits and spiritual powers; these spiritual events may, of course, manifest themselves in events of empirical history too, in wars, revolutions, reformations and economic upheavals, but their inner, spiritual, noumenal significance may bear no correspondence whatever to their empirical-historical expression. The greatest events of world history may prove quite insignificant in the apocalyptic scheme, while events scarcely noticed in empirical history may possess wholly exceptional significance, such as, for ex<ample>, the execution of a certain Nazarene carpenter under Pontius Pilate. Hence the search for a historical horoscope, for an external placing of a given historical epoch within the Apocalypse’s symbols, is fundamentally mistaken.
Yet at the same time the very reality in which we too actually participate, with our spiritual life and our history, is symbolised in it. One therefore cannot deny in principle the possibility that parts of the chain of apocalyptic events may also emerge upon the surface of history, which then turns directly into Apocalypse. An apocalyptic experience of history in this sense is possible; and in that case the need returns to seek oneself and one’s age in the symbols of the Apocalypse, to look again into this mystical mirror in which every historical age sees itself. Yet the principal force and value even of these attempts belongs not to a rationalistic, in some people’s view almost scientific, method of deciphering symbols with a key to the prophetic alphabet, but to illuminating them on the basis of personal religious experience and inspiration, the interpreter’s personal apocalypse. Only where one feels this living breath of genuine religious experience, the living tremor of a personal apocalypse, are apocalyptic depths and distances disclosed, as, for ex<ample>, in Solovyov’s Three Conversations. Where, however, this assumes the character of literary acrobatics and an obvious adaptation to preconceived, often wholly non-religious themes and dispositions, it merely sustains the prejudice against the Apocalypse which, I know, exists among many sincerely religious and sensitive people. In any event, the Church acts wisely in displaying great restraint in its use of the Apocalypse while fully acknowledging its divine inspiration. This is expressed, among other things, in the fact that the Apocalypse has no liturgical use.
Yet however disputable, mysterious and undeciphered the individual symbols of the Apocalypse may be, no less transparent, important and essential are its fundamental religious ideas concerning the content of history and its outcome from the religious standpoint. In this sense, for all its mystery and incomprehensibility, the Apocalypse even now possesses wholly exceptional significance within the fullness of Christian doctrine. It provides a teaching about the earthly history of the Church and the character of history in general. Its fundamental idea in this respect consists in understanding the cosmic and historical process as a tragedy, and moreover as a wholly real struggle, neither illusory nor temporary, between two spiritual principles, the evil principle possessing its own metaphysical reality. Evil exists in the world as a positive, self-asserting power, not merely as the absence of good or the fruit of ignorance, misunderstanding and error. According to this metaphysical dualism, tragedy is not resolved in history but merely matures within it, and therefore reaches its greatest tension and full maturity towards history’s end. Its resolution is referred solely to eschatology, to a new cosmic epoch when the prince of the world will be cast out, evil bound and defeated, and the spotless Bride of the Lamb, saved from the enchantments and hostility of the Babylonian harlot, will prepare herself for the heavenly bridal chamber. Such is the metaphysical foundation of the historical process. Again, in accordance with the general character of the Apocalypse, this idea too cannot be applied directly to historical events, nor can the book be regarded as a guide to world history. Historical events as they are accessible to our direct observation may present another picture, quite unlike this one; ‘progress’, the growth of civilisation and material well-being, are possible in history, and yet history’s inner outcome is still not harmony but tragedy, the final separation of spiritual good and evil and, in it, the ultimate intensification of the world’s tragedy. This once again emphasises the conditional character of history, the limited framework of our historical existence. It is by no means a condemnation of history, which still represents a necessary, if tragic, path towards a higher stage of being; it is not even pessimism in the cultural-historical sense. Rather, it is a fundamental dualism casting a sombre, tragic reflection upon all history, upon humanity’s entire historical condition in captivity to the prince of this world. In any case, this eliminates dreams of earthly eudaimonism, since the struggle between good and evil is experienced as tragedy in both personal and historical life. At the end of history metaphysical evil receives its highest expression: a spiritual, personal embodiment, rather than a political or social one, in the Antichrist, who conceals its true nature beneath the mask of good.
Chiliasm and Socialism
The predominant disposition of the earliest Christians was joyfully eschatological: they expected the imminent end of the world. Jewish messianism with its chiliasm was almost entirely dissolved in this intense eschatologism. Yet these hopes have roots too deep in the human soul to be uprooted for long or for good. Very early, already in the earliest Christian communities, we observe chiliasm reviving once more, although in a new guise, yet retaining its old features; and this chiliasm proves so strong and tenacious that it enters into conflict with Christian eschatologism. This is evident above all from the fact that Jewish apocalyptic literature, viewed with suspicion after the destruction of Jerusalem and then wholly condemned by rabbinic Talmudic theology, now becomes the inheritance of the Christian churches. Chiliastic conceptions also penetrate early Christian literature, in St Justin, St Irenaeus, Hippolytus, Tertullian, Lactantius, Commodian and others, and enjoy wide circulation not only among heretics, the followers of Cerinthus and Montanus, but also in ecclesiastical circles: in the East until the Montanist crisis, and in the West much longer, until the beginning of the fourth century. Their support, however, was found in those few mysterious words about the thousand-year kingdom that occur in chapter 20 of the Apocalypse of John too.
‘And I saw thrones and those seated upon them, to whom it was given to judge, and the souls of those beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshipped the beast or its image, and had not received its mark upon their foreheads or their hands. They lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. But the rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years should end. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over them the second death has no power; but they shall be priests of God and Christ, and shall reign for a thousand years’ (Revelation 20:4–6).
Satan too is bound for a thousand years, so that he may not deceive the nations during this time. To this passage exegesis attaches the interpretation of a whole series of other New Testament texts and Old Testament prophecies. If the quoted passage from the Apocalypse is considered alongside the chiliastic depictions of Jewish apocalyptic literature, one is involuntarily struck by how the colours have faded, the images become subtler and the whole picture changed. On the basis of such a comparison one may say outright that Jewish chiliasm is rejected in Christian chiliasm, silently but expressively. Yet an external resemblance between them remains, permitting the assertion that Jewish chiliasm, transfigured and altered, survived in Christianity too. Thanks to these changes, however, Christian chiliasm lost all the definiteness of the Jewish form, along with its sensuous character. Christian chiliasm is a kind of hieroglyph, a sacred symbol admitting different, almost opposite interpretations. Already in the first centuries of Christianity two principal tendencies emerged in the understanding of Christian chiliasm, and with it the whole Apocalypse: the Jewish, sensuous-historical one, and the spiritualist one. For the former, chiliasm is the goal of history, the ideal of progress attained through historical development, and consequently belongs wholly to the future. According to the latter, chiliasm belongs as much to the past and present as to the future, since the thousand-year kingdom of Christ and His saints is the Church, and Satan was bound at Christ’s first coming. The representatives of Jewish chiliasm in early Christian literature are St Justin the Philosopher and St Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons, who, as mentioned above, quotes a passage from the Jewish Apocalypse of Baruch as a tradition deriving from John, the Lord’s disciple. The defenders of the spiritualist interpretation were representatives of Hellenistic philosophical influences, first Origen and later Blessed Augustine. In accordance with his general spiritualism and allegorical method of interpreting Holy Scripture, the former could respond to the idea of an earthly, sensuous kingdom only with indignation. Augustine adopts the same attitude, devoting book 20 of De civitate Dei to questions of eschatology. His fundamental thought, which became the basis of the worldview of the Catholic Church and later of medieval Catholic hierocracy, is this: ‘At the present time the Church is the kingdom of Christ and the kingdom of heaven. Therefore even now His saints reign with Him, although differently from the way in which they will reign then.’
In these two interpretations of the prophecy of chiliasm, two tendencies of ecclesial consciousness took shape. In one, the existing reality of the Church is more strongly felt and valued, as are the absolute religious goods recognised in a deepening and expanding religious experience. The sense of this fullness, which can be contained only through personal effort and inward ascent, does not dispose one to await new revelations. Yet alongside this conserving tendency there has always existed another in the Church, expressing a thirst for new revelations and bearing within it, for all its fidelity to the Church, the disquiet of unanswered questions, the dream of the City of God on earth and expectations of what is to come. This disposition already finds classic expression in the teachings of Joachim of Fiore (1145–1202). For these chiliasts in the religious sense, the Apocalypse’s words about the thousand-year kingdom are a symbol of their religious hope, a luminous point on the mystical horizon. The text quoted can evidently be understood in either sense; and what decides here is naturally not one textual interpretation or another, one exegesis or another, but the general religious worldview and disposition alone. It is therefore scarcely possible to settle conclusively upon either interpretation on purely exegetical grounds. The Church leaves this hieroglyph undeciphered. While a predominance of Augustinianism can still be discerned in Catholicism, in Orthodoxy neutrality in understanding the Apocalypse’s words about chiliasm is maintained to this day, thereby leaving room for different interpretations within the bounds of the Church’s teaching. Both more or less resolute chiliasts, at present V. A. Ternavtsev, and to a certain extent Vladimir Solovyov, N. F. Fyodorov and Dostoevsky, and resolute anti-chiliasts, the tendency hitherto predominant in ecclesiastical thought, alike count themselves Orthodox. Perhaps the time has not yet come when a dogma of chiliasm, of whatever content, could be formulated with complete clarity and distinctness in the consciousness of the whole Church. For the present, however, and this cannot be emphasised strongly enough, on this question there is no dogma, only opinions.
One may leave the passage of the Apocalypse under discussion unused, or allegorise it, but who will venture to strike these words out altogether, or assert that their meaning is perfectly clear to him and excludes every religious-chiliastic prospect? Who will dare such violence against the sacred text, who feels authorised to commit it! That is why throughout Christian history these mysterious lines hold the attention of souls disposed towards them; from Joachim of Fiore to our own day this chiliastic tradition has not been broken, this religious hope has not been extinguished. Yet this religious chiliasm, this thirst for new revelations, should still not be confused with the historical chiliasm of Jewish messianism. In itself religious chiliasm by no means promises the overcoming of historical tragedy; as the highest and final stage of religious development achievable in this world, it merely prepares for that overcoming. According to the Apocalypse’s text, it will be followed by the final and immense resistance of the worldly element, evidently still unconquered and untamed. Satan is released with his final malice, and he will deceive ‘the nations at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, and gather them to battle. Their number is as the sand of the sea. And they went out over the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city’ (Revelation 20:7–8). Religious chiliasm may find the Church in the catacombs, under persecution; it may pass entirely unnoticed from outside in world history, just as the emergence of the earliest Christian community initially went unnoticed.
Alongside this elevated, spiritual understanding of chiliasm, owing to the irresistible need for faith in historical progress, apparently ineradicable in humanity, the old Jewish, sensuous-historical understanding of chiliasm very soon raises its head again. There is a revival of the ideal of the Jewish messianic kingdom, of the historical overcoming of tragedy, of hope for victory over evil and the realisation of earthly paradise under the conditions of empirical, historical existence. The old apocalyptic thought of Jewry comes to life again, changing only its phraseology and outward guise. Throughout medieval history, alongside the main channel of Catholicism, in which the Augustinian view equating the Catholic Church with the thousand-year kingdom had prevailed, there arise sectarian movements fighting against it, of a vividly chiliastic and often simultaneously revolutionary-communist character. They assume fairly early a definite socialist or communist, and sometimes anarchist, character, and frequently join elemental movements of the masses. Thus in Italy the spiritual teaching of Joachim of Fiore quickly turned into the revolutionary-chiliastic doctrine of Segarelli and Dolcino, who became leaders of a peasant movement. Chiliastic ideas played the same role in the age of the Reformation, when the agitators and leaders of the peasant wars, the Zwickau prophets and Thomas Müntzer, were gripped by chiliastic fever. We observe perhaps its most acute paroxysm among the Anabaptists, when their movement in Holland and northern Germany became strongly coloured by chiliastic ideas. Here the idea was formulated, by a certain Melchior, that the kingdom of the New Covenant was approaching, but that the advent of the thousand-year kingdom must be prepared by a revolutionary uprising. The most striking episode of this Melchiorite movement is the history of the city of Münster, with the operatic figure of John of Leiden as David, king of the New Jerusalem. The chiliastic movement next passes to the British island, where it becomes the soul of the English Revolution, with its numerous socialist and communist offshoots. In short, the entire medieval history of revolutionary-socialist and at the same time religious movements can be presented as a continuation of the history of Jewish chiliasm in Christian dress. The doctrine of chiliasm was both the theory of progress and the sociology of that time; it was also the theoretical foundation of socialism for that age, its infant cradle, as it were.
The English Revolution produced the final eruptions of the popular chiliastic movement. After it, chiliasm among the masses seems to subside. It becomes the possession of closed circles, Pietists, Methodists and sectarians of every kind, down to contemporary popular sects, for ex<ample> our ‘immortalists’, who have come to believe in their own immortality, or intellectual ones, for ex<ample> our representatives of the ‘new religious consciousness’. It ceases to be a historical force, loses its ability to set the masses aflame and begins to disappear into the sands. But Jewish chiliasm is more tenacious than this outward impression might suggest. Le roy est mort, vive le roy! ‘The king is dead, long live the king!’ In that very eighteenth century, the century of rationalism, Enlightenment and scepticism, amid the thunder and crash of a revolution that imagined it was destroying the old world, there flies reborn from its flames the ancient phoenix that had already witnessed two thousand years of history: old Jewish chiliasm, the former faith in earthly paradise, but now in a new shell, first as political democratism, ‘liberty, equality and fraternity’ and the ‘rights of man and citizen’, then as socialism. Political democratism very soon disappointed the hopes placed in it and lost the chiliastic character that socialism, in its various shades, still retains. In the flames of the revolutionary pyre from which the undying phoenix was reborn, it admittedly underwent a considerable transformation; it lost much over the course of its long history and did indeed emerge considerably plucked, yet it retained its old chiliastic nature. In the general secularisation of life that distinguishes modern history, old Jewish chiliasm too became secularised and in this secularised form turned into socialism. In socialism one should distinguish the ‘goal’, or ideal, from the movement, or practice. The latter is the subject of scientific political economy and realistic social policy; the former belongs to the sphere of beliefs and hopes of a religious character in the broad sense of the word. Of course, in bringing socialism close to Jewish chiliasm I by no means have in mind socialism’s practical side, whose discussion belongs to political economy, but exclusively its religious nature. At the foundation of socialism as a worldview lies the old chiliastic faith in the coming of earthly paradise, as is often stated directly in socialist literature, and in the earthly overcoming of historical tragedy. For this faith, which constitutes socialism’s religious soul, the further elaboration of doctrinal particulars is of comparatively secondary importance. We know that, in accordance with the rationalist spirit of the age, socialism now also claims to be ‘scientific’; yet fewer and fewer people remain who are deceived by this semblance of science and are actually naïve enough to believe that socialist chiliasm can be scientifically grounded. To the same degree that science is competent to discuss real questions of social or socialist practice, it is, of course, by its very nature incapable of chiliastic prophecy. Even in the most recent socialism such prophecies are sometimes directly connected with religious premises, but most often they find their basis in neo-paganism, the religion of man-godhood, already emerging in Renaissance humanism but developed in modern times. Socialism is the apocalypse of the naturalistic religion of man-godhood. Insofar as the latter generally signifies religious impoverishment and aberration, the socialist chiliasm of our day, although it has gained infinitely in practical applicability, likewise represents a simplification, degeneration and even vulgarisation of old Jewish chiliasm. Socialism is a rationalistic recasting of Jewish chiliasm, translated from the language of cosmology and theology into that of political economy; all its dramatis personae, its characters, have therefore received an economic interpretation. The chosen people, bearer of the messianic idea, or, as later in Christian sectarianism, the people of ‘saints’, has been replaced by the ‘proletariat’, with a special proletarian soul and a special revolutionary mission. This election is now determined not by inward self-determination as the necessary condition of messianic election, but by the external fact of belonging to the proletariat, by one’s position in the process of production, by the mark of estate membership. The role of Satan and Beliar has naturally fallen to the capitalist class, elevated to the rank of representatives of metaphysical evil, or more precisely taking their place in socialist consciousness through their professional inclination towards accumulation. The messianic pangs and final tribulations correspond here to the inevitable and, according to the ‘theory of impoverishment’, constantly advancing impoverishment of the masses, accompanied by the growth of class antagonisms. At a certain stage of this process a social revolution occurs, effected either through the ‘dictatorship of the proletariat’ by seizing political power, or through the ‘action directe’, ‘direct action’, of French syndicalism. Chiliastic expectations had attached themselves before to elemental movements generated by political or economic necessity and inspired those movements. Contemporary chiliastic socialism plays the same role in relation to the proletariat’s social movement, which is naturally rooted in the objective conditions of capitalism and of the labour movement it engenders, in the struggle between labour and capital, entirely independent of socialism. The role of the deus ex machina facilitating the transition to chiliasm is played in socialism, again in accordance with the spirit of the age and its favourite pseudo-scientific mythology, by the ‘laws’ of society’s development or the growth of the productive forces. These first prepare the transition and then, once the process has reached a certain maturity, by virtue of its ‘inner and inevitable dialectic’, compel the transition to socialism, commanding the ‘leap from the kingdom of necessity into the kingdom of freedom’. Thus this role, previously assigned to the messiah or directly to the Deity, is here attributed to a personal, largely mythological abstraction, the pantheistic concept of the ‘law of development of the productive forces’. Yet it too performs the old service, that of a locomotive which will convey the historical train from the kingdom of necessity into the kingdom of freedom, into the Zukunftstaat or into the capital of More’s Utopia.
Le roy est mort, vive le roy!
In this new reworking of old chiliasm, eschatology suffered most, as one would expect from the naturalistic, wholly immanent religion of man-godhood, with its denial of a personal, supernatural God and personal immortality. In Jewish chiliasm, even in its crudest forms, and still more in its Christian receptions, the promises of earthly well-being in the messianic kingdom never exhausted the whole of apocalyptic thought or filled the entire eschatological plane, but were regarded merely as a link in the eschatological chain. In the background the prospects of the coming resurrection of the dead, universal judgement and final Kingdom of God always open up. In socialism, chiliasm naturally filled the entire historical plane and completely obscured every eschatological horizon. The lot of the final generations, who have the dubious good fortune to enjoy the socialist bliss of the Zukunftstaat upon the bones of their historical ancestors, albeit themselves facing the prospect of adding their own bones to them: such is the resolution and final outcome of historical tragedy here, that by which, in socialism’s conceptions, its agonising dissonance is harmonised and resolved. The extraordinary dulling of the sense of cosmic tragedy, conditioned by a terribly superficial, mechanistic-economic understanding of life, is positively astonishing when compared with the religious profundity and sharpened sense of tragedy of the Jewish apocalyptists. Socialist chiliasm is, of course, not always conceived in crudely materialistic and anti-cultural terms; all the promises of cultural refinement may be joined to it, as everyone dissatisfied with a simplified, barbarous understanding of socialism now insists. Yet this does not alter the religious essence of the matter in the least. It was precisely this spiritual impoverishment introduced into life through the replacement of genuine religion by the naturalistic chiliasm of ‘progress’ that V. S. Solovyov characterised with such acerbity and bitterness in the very last lines to come from his pen:
‘Prince S. N. Trubetskoy justly calls the current theories of progress, in the sense of increasing universal well-being under the conditions of present earthly life, vulgarity. From the side of the ideal it is vulgarity, or the tedious, endlessly repeated tale of the white bull; from the side of the supposed historical factors it is nonsense, a sheer impossibility.’
Yet is this only a religious aberration? Does this this-worldly, earthly socialist eschatology not also contain some new religious possibilities which Solovyov no longer saw then, although formerly he had been so close and receptive to the eschatological ideas of the Moscow philosopher N. F. Fyodorov? The last word has not yet been spoken here …
The Fundamental Antinomy of the Christian Philosophy of History
Two conceptions, two perceptions of history inevitably struggle within Christian consciousness: the optimistic-chiliastic and the pessimistic-eschatological. Both have deep roots in Christianity, yet they are so irreconcilable with one another. Their mutual relation may be defined as an antinomic conjunction: here we have a religious antinomy, logically insoluble but nevertheless psychologically experienced. Between them there is not a logical contradiction of contradictory assertions that cannot tolerate one another, but an antinomy of judgements, whose nature Kant explained in the Critique of Pure Reason in his analysis of the inevitable antinomies of pure reason. Such antinomies cannot and should not be reconciled, since they are irreconcilable, but they should be understood in their origin and significance. They can then at least be explained as expressing different sides or positions of being as a unity, which reason, with its present powers, is nevertheless unable to contain and understand without contradictions. Antinomies provide an experiential, manifest proof of the supra-logical character of being, or, what amounts to the same thing, of the inadequacy of reason’s powers to apprehend it adequately. The presence of antinomy inevitably leads us to conclude that the present state of being is transitional and not final; and in this evident incompleteness of its own it already opens glimpses into other possibilities of consciousness.
For non-religious consciousness life happened; it is an accident. For religious consciousness, however, life is given, and, as given from above, it is sacred, full of mystery, depth and abiding significance. Life is given to our consciousness in the form not of isolated individual being but of species-wide, historical, universally human and cosmic being; it flows within the infinite stream of life issuing from the Source of life, the God of the living, who knows no envy and created not death but life. Duties towards this universally human and cosmic life, and consequently towards history, together with the ‘talents’ entrusted to our disposal, are laid upon us at birth. For religious consciousness history too is a sacred mystery enacted, possessing meaning, value and significance in all its parts, as was profoundly felt in German classical idealism, especially in Hegel. Yet it is also our task, our work; we may and must relate to history ‘pragmatically’, as its creators. Action cannot take place outside personal goal-setting, outside historical tasks and ideals; these arise in active consciousness with the same necessity with which, looking ahead, we see the horizon before us. We may, of course, not look ahead at all, and then we shall not see the horizon; but when we raise our eyes it is inevitably before us. More than this, we cannot rid ourselves of the feeling that it is attainable, of the illusion that we can reach it, or of the entirely sober awareness that we can at least walk towards it. We are surrounded by a historical horizon upon which particular goals are projected with greater or lesser vividness, upon which a chiliasm of one content or another is outlined. Suppose we have entirely freed ourselves from Jewish chiliasm, from hope for a historical miracle as a deus ex machina, for the intervention of supra-historical and supernatural powers in history, acknowledging the historical path throughout its whole length as entirely open to humanity. Suppose we have become imbued with the pragmatic conviction that history is wholly our work, and that the supernatural powers of grace act in history not directly through miracles, but only by watering and nourishing the roots of the human soul in those depths where human aspirations and decisions ripen. Yet we cannot free ourselves from a formally chiliastic perception of the historical horizon, that is, from an actual belief in the attainability of the ideals of progress. Admittedly, in perceiving history in this way we constantly and consciously substitute only a part for the whole, phenomena accessible to us for the noumenon inaccessible to us; but we cannot free ourselves from this historical phenomenalism without renouncing an actively optimistic attitude towards history, the striving for historical harmony, for the resolution of dissonances, for progress. The religious perception of history manifested itself most strongly, after all, in the prophets, as the fruit of their enthusiasm and inspiration; it is inseparably connected with Christianity too, and consequently this whole order of feelings and ideas is somehow connected with Christianity as well. Admittedly, if we try to think through consistently this order of ideas imposed upon us by our practical attitude towards history, by our practical historical reason, we shall readily convince ourselves that the horizon is merely a necessary optical illusion and therefore unattainable, while progress resolves itself merely into infinite movement, into a bad infinity. We become convinced that what stands before us is an antinomy, slipping quietly from our hands like a shadow when we try to grasp it. One must fall into self-blinding illusionism, accept a fata morgana as reality, reconcile oneself to bad infinity and believe in the reality of the horizon in order to rest wholly content with the theory of progress, succumb to its historical harmonism and, having dulled one’s senses to other ideas and perceptions, establish oneself upon the conditional as upon the unconditional. In such a case historical chiliasm, cut off from its religious roots and transformed into the humanistic theory of progress so widespread in our day, brings a humanity that has grown heavy and is wholly content with itself and the world into religious hibernation, into winglessness. Of course, in such a case only the language of religious experience and mystical experiences can speak imperatively, awakening one authoritatively from sleep and making one feel the other, tragic side of being. The daytime noise of temporality alternates with the nocturnal whisper of eternity, and even amid life’s heat the icy breath of death sometimes passes; whoever has once admitted them into his soul hears this silence even amid the noise of the marketplace and feels this cold even under the blazing sun. Whoever has recognised through experience the real power of evil as the foundation of cosmic tragedy loses his former trust in history and life. Sorrow settles deep in the soul, and an ever-widening crack appears in the heart. Through the reality of evil, life becomes auto-intoxication; not only the body but also the soul takes in many poisons against which Mechnikov is powerless with his antitoxins. One’s historical sense of oneself too is coloured by the feeling of tragedy in life, in history and in the world; it loses its eudaimonic colouring and becomes deeper, more serious and darker. The idea of eudaimonic progress, with its hope for ultimate harmony, is increasingly displaced by the idea of tragic progress. According to this idea, history is the maturation of tragedy, and its final act, its last page, is marked by extreme and no longer bearable tension: it is an agony followed by death, lying in wait equally for individuals and humanity, and only beyond death’s threshold does new life await. Such a perception of the world ceases to be chiliastic and becomes eschatological.
In accordance with its twofold character, eschatologism may be bright, insofar as it anticipates a harmony not of this world, the ‘air of resurrection’, and sombre, insofar as it is coloured by a foreboding of the approaching end and the calamities preceding it. Personal eschatology, one’s personal relation to death, has a similarly twofold character. In earliest Christianity the tones of joyful eschatologism predominated; then people prayed ardently, ‘Yea, come, Lord Jesus’, and impatiently awaited His imminent coming. In the eschatologism of later Christianity sombre tones prevail, with the expectation of the antichrist and the final trials predominating. Yet anti-historicism is equally strong in both perceptions of the world; the sense of empirical reality and its immediate needs is dulled, just as a person preparing for death naturally loses his taste for and interest in everyday affairs and cares, and thought concentrates upon the unchanging and eternal. The sense of the world’s transfiguration, of the irreconcilable struggle of its elements, of the conditional character of history and of present life generally carries the spirit beyond history and even beyond the world, dulling its sensitivity to the world’s impressions and making it unworldly. An eschatological perception of the world sometimes grips the masses like a spiritual epidemic, as in our schism under Peter, and sometimes weakens altogether. The eschatological perception of the world struggles against the chiliastic, yet in practice it also combines with it, though in varying proportions. The general disposition is coloured by the predominance of one set of tones or the other. Yet if we try to make eschatologism too the sole guiding principle of the philosophy of history and carry it through to the end, we shall find that here too we are dealing with an antinomy. Eschatology negates history for the sake of eternity, the empirical for the sake of the transcendent. But it still does so only within the bounds of the temporal and relative, and thereby inevitably falls under their influence. Insofar as eschatologism is an intimate personal disposition, the music of the soul, it remains a living and authentic mystical experience. But one has only to turn it into an abstract norm, a dogmatic idea, for it too to prove merely a historical programme, and one that violently, fanatically mutilates living life: it becomes an embodied contradiction. Only this life is given to us immediately and immanently, and only in it and through it can we be born to a new one, by outgrowing it only within it. Yet this false eschatologism treats precisely this fruit-bearing life with a grimace of disgust and cold hostility, elevating the negation of history into a historical programme then carried out by violent, that is, the most earthly, means. This determines the sombre, ‘medieval’, ‘monastic’, ‘ascetic’ attitude towards life which provoked, as a natural reaction against itself, an equally one-sided chiliastic humanism. This false eschatologism lit the fires of the Inquisition, raised persecutions against human thought and freedom, justified spiritual despotism and ultimately aroused a hatred of itself that lives on to this day. Its falsehood consists above all in the fact that eschatologism can only be a personal perception of the world, a personal disposition, and not a historical programme, which moreover is very often carried out not even upon oneself but upon someone else’s skin. Precisely in this way arises the false-eschatological sanctimony so typical of this tendency.
Thus the attempt to resolve the problem of the Christian philosophy of history in the light of the immanent alone or the transcendent alone, chiliastically or eschatologically, cannot be carried through to the end and reveals the antinomic character of these resolutions. This antinomy is lived through in each person’s religious experience according to the character and depth of that experience. In V. S. Solovyov’s teaching we observe a classic example of such antinomism. Beginning in Lectures on Godmanhood and other works of his early period with a highly optimistic and harmonious worldview, according to which abstract principles are overcome and reconciled in the coming synthesis (under the appreciable influence of N. F. Fyodorov), he ends with the agonised, rending dissonance of Three Conversations and the ‘Tale of the Antichrist’, with its radical eschatologism. Such a disposition was a turning point for the author himself, for after the ‘Tale of the Antichrist’ one could only either die to the world by withdrawing into the wilderness, or simply die; and the preface to Three Conversations is filled with this foreboding of imminent death. Solovyov lifted the veil of Isis for himself and peered into an abyss into which a mortal is not permitted to look with impunity, just as he is not permitted to know either his future or the time of his death, his personal end of the world. In this sense Solovyov’s spiritual biography offers a wholly unique example in modern philosophy of the radical intensification of the problem of history with its antinomism. It was precisely this antinomism that manifested itself in his spiritual evolution. One cannot simply say that Solovyov abandoned one worldview and passed to another. No, both belong organically to the same Christian worldview which he always professed; essentially, he never wholly denied either of them, but in his religious experience at different times of life both members of the antinomy were psychologically combined with varying force. Solovyov, however, knew of this antinomic character and took it into account. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of K. Leontiev, who expressed a disposition of one-sided, radical eschatologism with an almost complete devaluation of earthly life, or of N. F. Fyodorov, who represents the opposite extreme. In Leontiev, however, this worldview is further complicated and veiled by his aestheticism, Nietzscheanism, the individual peculiarities of his taste, even his literary talent. He does not notice or ignores the antinomic character of the problem; but the ‘rosy’ Christianity he so detests does exactly the same, regarding religion chiefly as oil for greasing the wheels of the social mechanism or the chariot of progress, valuing it as a means to external ends. If the former, for all its seriousness and sincerity, sins through an impious attitude towards life, the latter is marked by an impermissible frivolity towards the sombre side of Christian eschatologism, its dualistic-tragic understanding of history. The idea of inevitable death cannot be made the sole guiding motive of life, but banishing from thought the remembrance of the hour of death is the height of religious frivolity. One must live with full respect and care for life, yet live without forgetting death and prepare for it through that very life.
I shall conclude with a comparison. In one of his letters to the late A. N. Schmidt, very significant in content, V. S. Solovyov recounts the following dream about him dreamt by an old lady, A. F. Aksakova: ‘She saw that a letter from me was handed to her, written in my usual handwriting, which she called pattes d’araignée, “spider’s legs”. Having read it with interest, she noticed that another letter, on magnificent paper, was wrapped inside. She opened it, saw words written in beautiful handwriting and golden ink, and at that moment heard my voice: “Here is my real letter, but wait before reading it”; and immediately she saw me enter, bending under the weight of an enormous sack of copper coins. I took several coins out of it and threw them onto the floor, one after another, saying: “When all the copper has gone, then you will reach the golden words too.”
Not everyone has golden words written in his hidden letter, but everyone bears within himself a certain living mystery, even if not always aware of it; everyone has a personal apocalypse concerning himself. Yet it cannot reveal itself until we have spent all our copper coins, given life everything we owe it …
