Ladies and gentlemen!

Invited by the St Petersburg group of the international student Christian association to speak at its formal annual meeting and share my thoughts and feelings about the present with my listeners, I hesitated for a long time before accepting the invitation. I am only too aware of all the difficulties, external and internal alike, that inevitably arise when a brief, occasional lecture must touch upon the most intimate and painful questions in the life of the modern soul; and if I overcame this embarrassment and hesitation, not without a struggle with myself, it was because I considered it my particular duty to respond to this call, coming as it did directly from the student body. For exerting a spiritual influence on our students and coming into intellectual contact with them has been, and remains, a constant concern and a cherished dream of mine. And although the occasion for my address is incidental, its substance is not, for it will express convictions that have taken shape slowly and painfully: what I hold to be true as a result of such scholarly work as I have been able to undertake, philosophical reflection and the experience of life, ‘the mind’s cold observations and the heart’s sorrowful notes’. Some of my listeners may also be familiar, from my earlier scholarly and literary writings, with the spiritual turning-point I experienced. As a result of it, I moved away from an atheistic worldview based on certain scientific and philosophical premises, testing these with mind and heart, with science and life, and retreating step by step, until I consciously returned to the faith of my childhood: faith in the crucified God and His Gospel as the complete, highest and deepest truth about man and his life. The way in which the Gospel teaching is assimilated, and the path towards it, may differ enormously both historically and individually: the sons of our age have to overcome especially many obstacles, intellectual and moral, in order to make their own what is revealed freely to a child’s heart, or to a simple but pure heart, and perhaps more fully and purely than to us. Christianity is not a religion solely for scholars or philosophers, or solely for women, children and the ignorant rabble, as the half-educated crowd of our time supposes. Its universality, its embrace of all humanity and all the people, is revealed above all in the fact that it is accessible, according to the measure of faith, personal spiritual endeavour and the heart’s striving, to the profoundest philosopher and to a child, to Augustine and to a shepherd, to Kant or Gladstone and to a Russian peasant. Beneath the crust of the outward man, of outward activity and bustle, everyone preserves a particle of the divine purity of their childhood, their original purity, for which Chekhov’s heroine in The Cherry Orchard weeps: ‘Oh, my childhood, oh, my purity!’ And this feeling is deeper, and therefore more powerful, than all empirical and historical differences. As an experience it is given in the religious life of everyone to whom that life is not alien, and speaking of it is not alien to such a person either. Yet to the intelligentsia all this seems so foreign, incomprehensible and abstract. Perhaps the powerful words and confession of a poet will prove more comprehensible here, particularly those of a typical poet of the intelligentsia, with a sick soul corroded by the contradictions of life: our own beloved Nekrasov, whose thirtieth memorial anniversary we celebrated only recently. Not everyone, perhaps, remembers these marvellous lines. The poet describes his return to his homeland and the impressions of home. ‘I recognise’, he writes:

The sternness of the rivers, always ready To withstand warfare with the storm, And the even murmur of the pinewoods, And the stillness of the hamlets, And the broad expanses of the fields... God’s church flashed into view upon the hill And with a childlike, pure feeling of faith Suddenly breathed upon my soul. There is no denial, there is no doubt, And an unearthly voice whispers: ‘Seize this moment of tender feeling, Enter with your head uncovered! However warm a foreign sea, However fair a foreign distance, It cannot mend our grief Or dispel our Russian sorrow! A church of sighs, a church of sorrow, The humble church of your own land: Neither Rome’s St Peter’s nor the Colosseum Has heard more grievous groans! Here the people whom you love Brought the sacred burden Of their unquenchable anguish, And went away relieved! Enter! Christ will lay His hands upon you And by His holy will remove The soul’s fetters, the heart’s torments, And the sores from the sick conscience...’ I heeded... I was moved like a child... And long I sobbed and beat My forehead on the ancient slabs, That He might forgive, might intercede, Might overshadow me with the cross, The God of the oppressed, the God of the sorrowing, The God of the generations that stand Before this poor altar!

Here is a union of the intelligentsia with the people than which there is none fuller or deeper. But have many members of the intelligentsia, readers and admirers of Nekrasov, bowed before ‘this poor altar’, uniting with the people in their faith and their prayer? No, not many. I shall say it plainly: a mere handful. The mass, almost the whole of our intelligentsia, has turned away from the common people’s ‘peasant’ faith, and spiritual estrangement has arisen between it and the people. In this connection I recall a chance scene from the life of the second State Duma. On a sunny spring day, when many deputies and journalists were strolling in the Tauride Garden during a sitting of the Duma, my attention was caught by a group of smartly dressed Petersburg people, deputies and newspaper staff, who had gathered to listen to something and were periodically shaking with laughter. In the middle of the crowd was a Volhynian peasant who had wandered in, an old man with a wonderfully sorrowful face and a distinctive head from which one could have modelled a statue of an apostle or painted an icon. Listening, I realised that the old man was telling of some vision he had had, in which God had sent him to announce His will to the people’s representatives. His speech was confused, but every time he returned to his mission and spoke of God, his words were drowned in general laughter; and he, meekly and patiently, grieving for the laughing gentlemen, began his tale again. I felt inexpressibly sad and hurt as I watched this scene, in which the spiritual tragedy of the new Russia was so vividly reflected, and I walked away in bitterness. For a long time I could still see from a distance the noble head of the old man, trying to explain something and persuade his listeners, and the laughing crowd of onlookers. Perhaps, indeed, I am not reproducing the scene altogether accurately, but that is how I perceived it at the time. ‘Are we not building the Tower of Babel?’ a Catholic priest who was a deputy and was also there quietly remarked to me on this occasion.

I do not deceive myself now either, and I too feel myself to some extent in the position of the old man at the Duma. Anyone who in our day ventures to speak before the Russian intelligentsia not merely about current affairs, chiefly political, but about the general purposes of life and its religious meaning, and who at the same time finds that meaning only on the ground of the Christian religion, must reckon in advance with an impersonal but powerful and utterly real adversary in the spirit of the age. An atmosphere of irreligion characterises the modern era in general, especially the end of the eighteenth century and the nineteenth century. The distinctive features of our age in this respect are conveyed with inimitable power and concision by our poet-philosopher Tyutchev in his poem ‘Our Age’:

It is not flesh but spirit that is corrupted in our day. And man is anguished with despair... He strains towards the light out of the shade of night And, having found the light, complains and rebels. Burnt and parched by unbelief, He bears the unbearable this day... And he knows his own perdition, And thirsts for faith... but does not ask for it. The age will not say, with prayer and tears, However it grieves before the closed door: ‘Let me in! I believe, my God! Come to the aid of my unbelief!’

Of course, in a general characterisation of an epoch one cannot fail to distinguish between the various countries of European culture; one cannot fail to note, for example, the religiosity of the Anglo-Saxon race, which has to a considerable extent survived to our own day, and which the Anglo-Saxons have also carried overseas, both to New Zealand and to the United States.

The most remarkable thing about this Anglo-Saxon religiosity is that it is not confined to the common people, as our Russian piety predominantly is, and is not regarded by the English intelligentsia as ‘religious prejudice’. Professor Schulze-Gävernitz says in his latest work that ‘religion is still the nerve of Anglo-Saxon culture’. ‘Outward facts,’ the German economist continues, ‘confirm this to the continental tourist at every turn. Sunday still sets its stamp upon the whole country. Alongside the clergy, lay preachers appear everywhere: doctors, lawyers, workers’ leaders, not only in enclosed chapels but also, and predominantly, in the open air, for instance in the parks of large cities, where carriages or pedestals are used as pulpits. Here a missionary carriage travels through the country, covered with sayings from the Bible and offering shelter to itinerant preachers; there sisters of mercy make their way into wine shops and criminals’ dens as bearers of “aggressive Christianity”. The pavements swarm with soldiers of the “Salvation Army”, and so on, and so on.

The leading minds of the nation, its spiritual leaders, share this national religiosity to a greater or lesser degree. The famous English statesmen Disraeli (Lord Beaconsfield) and Gladstone were fervent Christians and daily readers of the Bible. Gladstone, the author of The Impregnable Rock of Holy Scripture, is known to have liked to preach at Hawarden, and expressed this general conviction in letters to his wife: ‘... I am convinced that humanity’s well-being does not now depend on politics; the real struggle is being waged in the realm of thought, where a murderous assault is being made upon humanity’s greatest treasure, faith in God and the Gospel of Christ.’

And England’s recent prime minister Arthur Balfour has also written a book in defence of Christian teaching, entitled The Foundations of Belief. I need only mention further the names of Ruskin and Carlyle, in whom nothing can be understood without taking account of their exceptional religiosity; the so-called Christian socialists Kingsley, Ludlow, Morris and their present-day successors among the English clergy. Of course, it cannot be said that England, too, has remained untouched by the movement of negation in modern times. What were perhaps the most vicious and powerful arguments against religion were forged in the smithy of English thought and science. Hobbes and Hume, Bentham and a peculiarly interpreted Darwin and Bacon, together with other thinkers, exerted their influence, but perhaps to a greater extent on the Continent than at home. Nevertheless, even in England the spirit of the age of which I have spoken is beginning to make itself felt more and more; it has manifested itself still more strongly on the European continent, especially in certain countries and at certain periods, for example in France during the great French Revolution, and to a considerable extent even now in the Protestant part of Germany, and so on. Yet one can still say that in no European country does the intelligentsia know such wholesale, mass indifference to religion as ours does. Two currents have long been discernible in the history of Russian thought, and they continue to struggle to this day. One numbers few adherents, but among them are the flower of our national mind and genius, the objects of our national pride and glory. These are those who either remained spiritually with the people in its peasant church or, at any rate, did not separate themselves from the people in their belief in the living God. Among these few we number Zhukovsky, Pushkin, Tyutchev, in a certain sense Lermontov, Gogol, Khomyakov, Kireevsky, Chaadaev, the Aksakovs, Vl. Solovyov, Dostoevsky, Pirogov, Fet, A. Tolstoy and Leo Tolstoy, insofar as he stands on religious ground at all.

The antireligious current of thought, which counts among its ranks most progressive publicists and public figures from Belinsky to our own day, adopted a rationalistic-atheistic worldview that spread in a broad wave and constitutes the dominant faith of the Russian intelligentsia. I have not misspoken: this unbelief really is a faith, a faith in scientificity, in rationalism. The mass of our intelligentsia, with extraordinary ease, at the earliest stage of intellectual development, in adolescence or youth, accepts the dogmatics of atheism, attributing to it the predicate of scientificity. It has often been observed that prejudice is further removed from truth than complete ignorance. In matters of religion we have an inherited prejudice that science and philosophy exclude religion. Such an opinion can be explained only by utter unfamiliarity with the scientific and philosophical work that has been, and continues to be, vigorously pursued on questions of the history and philosophy of religion, its dogmas and its worship, with endless and, by their nature, understandably interminable disputes about these questions. I repeat: our Russian unbelief usually remains at the level of blind dogmatic faith. Dostoevsky, who made the study of Russian, indeed of world atheism something of his speciality, pointed with his customary penetration to this peculiarity of Russian spiritual development, which naturally has its historical causes and causes in everyday life. Dostoevsky puts the following characterisation into the mouth of Prince Myshkin in The Idiot, his alter ego:

‘It is so easy for a Russian to become an atheist, easier than for anyone else in the whole world! And our people do not simply become atheists; they invariably come to believe in atheism as though in a new faith, without noticing at all that they have come to believe in a zero’; and, Dostoevsky adds, this arises ‘not merely from base, vainglorious feelings’, but ‘from spiritual pain, from spiritual thirst, from a longing for a higher cause, for a firm shore’.

Often, reflecting upon the divided, still undeciphered and undefined countenance of the Russian intelligentsia, I have returned in thought to this thesis of Dostoevsky’s about its religious longing, its thirst for a firm shore, for a righteous life, for a new heaven and a new earth. And if at times one cannot help doubting the accuracy of this characterisation, neither can one reject it. In the second State Duma too, in the heated atmosphere of political passions, as I listened and looked around me and tried to decipher the true nature of the Russian intelligentsia, I sometimes saw clearly how far these people essentially stood from politics in the proper sense, that is, the everyday, prosaic work of repairing and oiling the machinery of state. This is not the psychology of politicians, of calculating realists and gradualists; no, it is the impatient exaltation of people awaiting the realisation of the Kingdom of God on earth, the New Jerusalem, and almost tomorrow at that. One involuntarily recalls the Anabaptists and many other communist sectarians of the Middle Ages, apocalyptists and chiliasts who expected the imminent advent of Christ’s thousand-year kingdom and cleared a path for it by the sword, popular uprising, communist experiments and peasant wars; one recalls John of Leiden with his retinue of prophets in Münster. Of course, the resemblance concerns psychology alone, not ideas. In the realm of ideas, however, whether for good or ill, whether to our happiness or misfortune, Russia reflects the ideas and moods of the age more decisively and straightforwardly even than the West. It also reflects that spiritual drama of the struggle against God and apostasy from God which constitutes the nerve of modern history; before it all the great political and social interests that raise waves and ripples upon the breast of the sea of history pale and recede into the background.

What, then, is the struggle here, and why is it a drama? The spiritual struggle that constitutes the basic theme and substance of modern history, beginning with the Renaissance and especially clearly from the eighteenth century onwards, is defined by cultivated humanity’s efforts to ‘settle down without God for ever and finally’, as Dostoevsky put it, or to ‘put God to death’, as one of the fiercest god-killers, Nietzsche, put it even more boldly: to reduce life exclusively to the immanent, without any connection with the transcendent; to deprive earth of heaven, not the cold, astronomical, Copernican heaven, but the Mosaic, biblical, or at least even Kantian heaven, the throne of God. In thought, in feeling, in intimate life and in its external organisation, in science and in philosophy, this struggle is being waged, so clearly foretold in the Gospel and the Apocalypse; and the greatest efforts are being made, have been made and will be made both to undermine and to vindicate the rights of religious faith. In this sense our historical epoch has no parallel in history, for isolated antireligious currents have always existed, but there has never been so conscious and convinced, so fanatical and irreconcilable an endeavour to bring man down to earth and empty heaven. If one had to express the spiritual essence of our epoch in an artistic image, in a painting or a tragic mystery play, that painting or mystery play ought to be called ‘The Funeral of God, or the Suicide of Humanity’. And these images ought to show with full force and vividness what humanity is attempting and what it is doing to itself. However the figures might be arranged on this fantastic canvas, one thing is certain: its overall substance will be neither an idyll nor a pastoral depicting the triumph of science and knowledge, nor a bourgeois comedy in which all obstacles are finally overcome and everything ends with the merry wedding of humanity the bridegroom to the state or society of the future as bride, but a serious, agonising tragedy.

Why, then, is this such a tragedy? Why does the funeral of God inevitably turn into the funeral of the very people conducting it? Because, in burying God in their consciousness, they are compelled to bury the divine in their own souls as well, whereas the divine is the actual, real nature of the human soul. One may think whatever one likes about oneself, regard oneself as a man-like ape, a reflex of economic relations, an automatic machine, a piece of matter endowed with consciousness by mechanical necessity; all this is said, and has been said, about man. Yet despite all these opinions he does not cease to be what ‘the hands that fashioned and created him’ made him, endowing him with the needs and properties of a higher spiritual nature. One can persuade a hungry man that he is full, and even so stun him with the logic of arguments that he considers himself obliged to try to believe it, but he will suffer hunger and feel unease. One can assure oneself and others that the wild carob pods on which the prodigal son fed in a foreign land are no worse, indeed better, than the calf prepared for him at his father’s house, but this too will not soothe him, will not give peace to his soul, will reconcile it neither with itself nor with life. For ‘tu nos fecisti ad te, cor nostrum inqueitum est, donec requiescat in te’ [‘You made us for Yourself; our heart is restless until it rests in You’], as blessed Augustine exclaims in his Confessions. Man is born for eternity and hears within himself the voice of eternity; he hears it with the sensitive ear of his greatest thinkers, scholars and poets, with the pure heart of his righteous people, with the creative genius of his artists. To live in time for eternity, to experience the absolute within the relative and to strive beyond every given reality, beyond every given content of consciousness, excelsior [higher], always excelsior: this is man’s calling, and this striving excelsior itself speaks of Him who dwells in excelsis [on high], and is a living revelation of God within us. Man cannot become absolute and self-sufficient for himself precisely because he will never be satisfied with himself, with his given condition, unless he sinks into base animality and actually becomes like an unreasoning creature. Yet at the same time man is conscious within himself of this power and this will to contain absolute content, to grow and expand, becoming a living image of the absolute, the image and likeness of God. This unquenchable thirst for a higher content of life has given birth, and continues to give birth, to religious faith.

Ибо «tu nos fecisti ad te, cor nostrum inqueitum est, donec requiescat in te», как восклицает в своей «Исповеди» блаженный Августин.

‘Much on earth is hidden from us,’ says Zosima in Dostoevsky, ‘but in compensation we have been granted a secret, hidden sense of our living connection with another world, with the world above and on high; and the roots of our thoughts and feelings are not here, but in other worlds. God took seeds from other worlds and sowed them here on earth and grew His garden; but what has grown is alive, and lives, only through its sense of contact with mysterious other worlds. If this feeling grows weak in you or is destroyed, then what has grown in you dies too. Then you will become indifferent to life and will come to hate it.’

Thus Byron’s Lucifer, having enriched Cain with a multitude of useless and lifeless pieces of knowledge, but turned him from his former faith by subtle slander, leads him only to the consciousness that he is nothing. And he confirms it:

And this shall be the sense Of all human knowledge, the limit Of all the wisdom within your reach: That you are nothing with your mortal nature. Bequeath this science to your children.

Our epoch is characterised by an exceptionally high estimation of its intellectual conquests. Many of our contemporaries imagine that the true life of humanity is beginning only now, while all previous history is a prologue or the darkness of savagery and barbarism. This peculiar historical cannibalism, as Herzen once called it, is in our eyes entirely unfounded. One cannot repeat about our own time the dialogue between Lucifer and Cain, when the latter asks Lucifer: ‘Are you happy? No, we are mighty. Are you happy? No.’ Our age, too, is mighty rather than happy. Possessing an unprecedented wealth of goods belonging to external, predominantly material, but also spiritual culture, it is no richer, indeed poorer, than previous ages in the most essential thing, in strength of soul, freshness and faith; and this poverty stands out in sharper relief precisely against the background of this deafening progress.

Having abolished the religion of God, humanity endeavours to invent a new religion, seeking gods for it within and around itself, inside and outside. It tries them one after another: the religion of reason (the cult of reason during the great French Revolution), the religion of humanity of Comte and Feuerbach, the religion of socialism, the religion of pure humanity, the religion of the superman in recent times, and so on. In the soul of humanity, which is losing God, a terrible emptiness must inevitably form, for although it can accept this or that doctrine, it cannot silence within itself the voice of eternity, the thirst for an absolute content of life. Having extinguished the sun, it strives to preserve the light and warmth, making convulsive efforts to save and retain the divine and fill the emptiness with new gods. But the unstable ground gives way beneath its feet, and the spiritual atmosphere becomes ever more tense and oppressive. This struggle of humanity for its spiritual existence, and its agonising efforts to seek firm ground now here, now there, are profoundly moving.

In the Acts of the Apostles there is the ever-memorable account of the Apostle Paul’s preaching in Athens, that Paris of the ancient world, the centre of the sciences and arts, of philosophers, scholars and artists. This city was full of idols, like our own culture, so that the great apostle ‘was stirred in spirit’. Yet, looking at them, he saw among these altars an altar bearing the inscription ‘To the Unknown God’, which provided the external theme of his sermon. Following the apostle’s example, one should seek such an altar in the Athens of today; and, of course, one can find it here too, discerning beneath the cover of negative words and destructive ideas a smouldering spark of faith and a devout altar. If you ask yourself what modern man lives by, what he has come to believe in instead of God, or, for that matter, if you ask the average Russian student or an older secondary-school pupil among the ‘conscious’ ones, he will of course answer at once: I want to benefit humanity; then, after thinking, he will add: by working out a scientific worldview for myself. Faith in progress, in science, in the possibility of resolving all life’s contradictions through the historical development of science and humanity, constitutes modern man’s simple catechism. This is common ground; then the particulars and differences begin: S.R., S.D., K.D. (and other combinations of letters). At its foundation lies the dogma of faith in reason, in the omnipotence of science. But is this faith in reason compatible with the general doctrine of man as a bipedal animal which, through chance, the play of material atoms and the struggle for existence, has reached its present condition and is to attain still more in the future? Where does this ‘plucked cock’, as the philosophical nihilist and Cynic Diogenes defined man, get his reason and science from, and what is the basis of such faith in them? What is the truth that science wishes to know?

This question of Pilate’s, addressed to Him who said of Himself ‘I am the way, the truth and the life’, to the divine Logos Himself, resounds throughout the history of humanity and finds no answer except in connection with religious faith. How are science and knowledge of the laws of the world possible? That is the question posed to humanity by critical philosophy in the person of Kant. How and why can a little lump of matter, albeit organised in a certain way, know the universe by reproducing it ideally within itself? What is this mysterious power of ideal reproduction? Sometimes these questions are brushed aside by reference to the achievements of science: does not modern technology testify to the power of mind and knowledge?

But to answer in this way is to substantiate the unknown by means of the known, to push the problem further away; and does not this very fact itself then require explanation? The organ of cognition, the brain with the nervous system, and the function of cognition are so incommensurable and incongruous that to speak of the brain and nerves knowing the world and its laws is to lapse not merely into mystical but into downright mythological nonsense, or else to affirm a thunderous miracle of the kind that representatives of the latest science do not admit at all. It is one or the other: either man really is the nonentity, the lump of dirt that materialist philosophy depicts him as, in which case these claims to reason and science are incomprehensible; or man is a God-like being, a son of eternity, a bearer of the divine spirit, and the possibility of scientific knowledge is explained precisely by this nature of man. Clearly, the dignity of science and its rights are not restricted but only affirmed by the religious teaching about man, and with the removal of the latter the former is undermined as well. In principle science rests upon religion, rather than contradicting it, as modern ideas have strangely come to suppose. If, however, we regard reason and science as a product and instrument of the struggle for existence in the light of a peculiarly understood Darwinism, we must finally strip them of their crown. If the power and significance of scientific truth lie only in usefulness, as the Darwinists say in biology and epistemology, then where did they get the idea that truth is always useful, and that error is not sometimes, and perhaps always, more useful? There is no way to neutralise this doubt, expressed by Nietzsche and repeated in certain works on the theory of knowledge. ‘There is nothing more unhealthy than thinking’, escaped O. Wilde’s lips; following the Greek sophists, he and other modernists consider it possible to ‘prove everything’ while regarding nothing as truth, mocking the ponderous, devout attitude towards science. A knife sharpened by science itself is being put to its throat; a crisis of scientific and philosophical consciousness is approaching, akin to the crisis experienced by the ancient world. Will science not yet have to seek support from the religion it now persecutes? The impending crisis of science, sophistical and Pilate-like scepticism, may establish more clearly the true relationship between religion and science, which great scholars and thinkers have always recognised, but which half-science has not understood. Science itself rests upon faith in reason, in the unity of the rational principle in microcosm and macrocosm, upon a religious and devout recognition of the value of truth and love for it.

In modern times voices are often heard speaking of a crisis, even a bankruptcy, of science, and sometimes these assertions are advanced as an argument in favour of faith. I consider these laments and assertions entirely unfounded and see in them a kind of misunderstanding. Science is alive and well and will, of course, continue to live and flourish. Vivat, crescat, floreat! [May it live, grow and flourish!] What is usually meant by the crisis of science is its loss of a competence that does not belong to it at all, its universalistic claims, which are attributed to it only by those who wished to replace religious faith with science. The tasks and significance of science are wholly relative and limited: it deals with a definite, logically and philosophically delimited range of problems of empirical knowledge in the Kantian sense, while being capable, by its very idea, of infinite progress. The horizon constantly recedes before it; new knowledge widens the domain of ignorance, but the island of knowledge is still surrounded by the sea of mystery and eternity, in the poet’s words:

Vivat, crescat, floreat!.

As the ocean embraces the terrestrial globe, So our life is encompassed all around by dreams; Night will fall, and with resounding waves The element beats upon its shore. That is its voice: it urges and entreats us... Already at the haven the magic boat has come alive; The tide rises and swiftly carries us Into the immeasurability of the dark waves. The vault of heaven, burning with starry glory, Looks mysteriously down from on high, And we sail, by the blazing abyss Surrounded on every side.

Rigorous science feels itself to be such a boat, surrounded by a ‘blazing abyss’ and borne upon the element of mystery; and this feeling nourishes the religious faith of great scholars. Before the ultimate questions of life and death, of good and evil, science stands without an answer now as before.

Another circumstance deserves attention: science as a concrete whole exists only as an aggregate of sciences, of continually multiplying scientific specialities. It is a machine assembled from a great multitude of wheels or parts. Complete knowledge, world reason, or the book of nature, is disclosed to humanity only in history; concretely, each individual, however great their intellectual power, reads only pages or lines in this book. Therefore the supposition that science really resolves all questions can rest only on a general faith in the power of science, in scientific method, in scientific reason; but this faith does not admit of empirical verification.

Thus science is incapable either of replacing or of abolishing religious faith, nor can it even defend its own existence against the raids of reckless scepticism without a tacit or explicit recognition of religious premises, namely faith in objective reason.

What I have said was intended to define only the most fundamental relations between science and religion as relations of solidarity and co-subordination. In particular matters, however, individual scientific teachings touching upon questions whose resolution one way or another is not a matter of indifference to religion can, of course, come into temporary conflict with one or another religious teaching. The development of science offers an endless number of such examples, although it also offers many examples of the clarification or removal of these conflicts through the further development of science... Work on clarifying these questions is the task of religious thought, which therefore is by no means a dogmatic, restful pillow beneath one’s head, but must remain under constant strain.

But if even science with its heavy artillery remains defenceless against the poisonous sting of scepticism, then the modern substitutes for religion are all the more defenceless, those in which humanity is assigned the role of deity and whose fundamental dogma consists in the doctrine of progress. I myself have already had much occasion to speak and write on this subject, and shall therefore be brief. Here we enter a whole labyrinth of contradictions and difficulties. They are easier to expose by comparison with the basic features of Christian teaching about man. According to Christian faith, man possesses moral freedom to will good and evil, and moral life consists in inclining the will from evil towards good. Through this struggle and its spiritual endeavour, ascetic discipline, the regeneration of the person is accomplished with help from above. Before man stands the absolute ideal of self-perfection: ‘Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect’, and ‘God is love’. Christian spiritual endeavour is therefore an endeavour of love and unceasing self-denial. A person can neither think nor feel himself cut off or separated from his neighbour: humanity, being saved in Christ and by Christ, is for him a living unity, a body of which he is a member. Hence love of God and love of neighbour are so inseparably connected here. This task does not exceed what is possible for the regenerate person, for he bears the image of God, the seal of divine love. ‘I am the image of Your ineffable glory, though I bear the wounds of transgressions’, as is sung in the majestic funeral hymns before the open coffin and the corpse decomposing within it: death can only temporarily distort this image, but cannot destroy it for ever. Christianity therefore promises, as the resolution of the world drama, the actual preservation of all values and the restoration of humanity to a new, eternal life. Man here, then, is not a self-appointed man-god, but a truly deified creature, a god by grace. Could man be exalted more highly? It is no accident that the rite of Orthodox worship includes the censing not only of icons but also of the worshippers, who are placed on a level with the icons. And indeed, if man is honoured with the image of God, however he may distort it within himself, is he not a living icon, a living ‘image’?

The modern worldview has rejected the entire religious foundation of this teaching, but retained those aspects of it which relate directly to man: it retained love of neighbour, dubbing it altruism; faith in the divinity of man, elevating him into a man-god; faith in the salvation of humanity, insisting upon the doctrine of progress. Only religious superstitions would seem to have been removed, while everything essential has remained, at least for the present age. But will not the building collapse without its foundations? Will not the ground give way beneath modern humanity? Does not this humanity slip from our hands like a pale phantom, like the earth-spirit that appeared to Faust, when we wish to embrace it? There are many signs that this is so, and many reasons why it cannot be otherwise.

Man is told that he is the highest thing in the world, that he is autonomous, that he is beautiful, that he is rational and self-sufficient, that he is a god, if not in his singularity and separateness, then in his totality, together with others. But life is proper to God, whereas this god is a decomposing corpse; his days and years are a gradual dying, an approach to the grave, in which, as we know, ‘even a genius’s skull is the worms’ inheritance’. When Plato buried his Socrates, that divine man who had been the light of life to him, what a cemetery this world became for him; and does it not become such for each of us when we lower into the grave what is most beloved and precious, what we love more than ourselves! And when so many lives around us are sacrificed for ideas rightly or wrongly understood, does this contradiction not become especially searing and agonising! One can, after all, suppress these feelings by the power of a hardened will, or remain in the ranks through the habit of discipline when those near and dear fall all around; but to overpower pain by straining one’s will and clenching one’s jaws is not to overcome it. Death introduces into the world a dissonance that even the deaf cannot fail to hear; hence the ceaseless struggle against the fear of death, now through a Mechnikovian inoculation, now through feeble consolations à la Feuerbach.

Thus the god is mortal individually and mortal as a whole; generation after generation moves in an unhurried procession towards the grave, leaving all its business and cares behind. And we are to be assured that service to this business and these cares for its own sake can not only fill life but give it meaning. This religion of humanity is a sort of cemetery philosophy; it is no wonder that it increasingly loses credit, yielding its place to the cult of the proud, isolated I, which in turn splits into separate experiences, or ultimately to the cult of these experiences themselves! Why should I seek some idol outside myself, in another person, in someone like me or worse than me, in the crowd generally, in the many (Viel zu Viele [far too many]), when I suffice for myself and can worship myself, when I am ‘the unique one’ (der Einzige)? Why anything sacred, why good and evil, when one can rise above, or rather stand outside, this distinction? Let us leave morality to priests and philistines, stop being dupes and become free individuals. The independent man lives in the freedom of absolute emptiness, of the imperious caprice of the moment. Why should consistency be obligatory, why even the inner unity of the person, the logic of moods, when there are only separate, disconnected experiences? Know how to make your own way, know how to get on, and woe to those who perish.

The nihilistic individualism to which our culture leads, like ancient culture before it, constitutes the most serious phenomenon in the spiritual life of the present. In their struggle against individualism, our advocates of social life strain every effort somehow to weld together a humanity that is falling apart and becoming atomised, through the rule of a cohesive majority, to curb anarchic individualism with socialist drill. But what instruments are available for this unification? What can overcome the disintegrating poison of individualism?

Ever since the religious sanction of morality was rejected, consciousness has been confronted with the question of morality’s nature. Insofar as philosophy, in Kant and his school, has made and continues to make desperate efforts to save the morality of duty, a task on which German idealism still expends its logical ingenuity, it arrives at religion as a necessary presupposition of morality. In Kant’s system practical reason leads to the postulates of the existence of God and the immortality of the soul, that is, to a religious foundation. Conversely, in those worldviews that are devoid of any religious colouring, the problem of morality assumes an utterly hopeless character: morality is reduced to self-abolition by the rejection of the idea of duty and its replacement by the idea of interest, personal or collective, by the instinct of animal self-preservation. Just as in medicine the growth of the literature on a particular disease is the best evidence of its prevalence and seriousness, so the crisis of morality in modern times, as in the age of ancient decadence, produces an extraordinary growth of literature on moral philosophy: everyone invents their own morality and proves it in their own way.

But we are assured that this crisis is short-lived, that a golden age is approaching not only of freedom and equality but also of fraternity. On what do these rosy hopes rest: on a spiritual transformation, on the regeneration of the person, on a new faith? No, we are told, this will come about through historical necessity, predominantly economic. Economic science tells us this, sociology predicts it. Allow me to observe that science, remaining science and possessing its characteristic caution and modesty, does not predict such things at all; it is faith that speaks of this, not science. First, the very capacity of social science to make predictions at all is disputed by many, not without reason, and the latest logical investigations into the nature of social science, I need mention only Rickert, lead precisely to this conclusion. Secondly, and most importantly, even if economic science can foresee something about the character of the economic order in the immediate future, this says nothing whatever about what the spiritual life of that epoch, or the human person, will be like. One can believe that economic reform will lead to spiritual regeneration only by first accepting a doctrine of man according to which he ‘is only what he eats’, is wholly a reflex of his economic circumstances or class position. And even if all these unacceptable propositions are accepted, the question remains what particular changes in psychology, in feelings, in self-assessment a change in economic circumstances will produce, and whether this change will be precisely of the kind and in the direction now imagined. One may think that the human person, although dependent on food, economic circumstances and the conditions of material life generally, is above all what he believes in, lives by, wants and honours. Starting from such an understanding, it is more correct to conclude that under the new order too the person may prove empty and morally disintegrated. Therefore, however highly we place concern for the material needs of the deprived classes, we must not forget man’s spiritual needs either. In modern humanity, not only among us but in the West as well, there has been a kind of going out of oneself into the external world, an abolition of the inner man, a predominance in personal life of external impressions and external events, chiefly political and social. Hence this need for bustle, for external impressions. Modern man strives to live as though he were never at home alone with himself: consciousness is filled, but one need only pause this kaleidoscope of external impressions to see how poor or empty his life is in content of its own. History has preserved for us an image of dazzling vividness and profound significance, symbolising our present spiritual barrenness, instructing and warning us. One of the greatest representatives of early humanism, who already bore within himself the contradictions of our present age of late humanism, Petrarch, relates in the account of one of his journeys how, after climbing a high mountain from which a marvellous view opened out, he opened at random Augustine’s Confessions, which he always carried with him, and read these words: ‘And so people go and gaze with wonder at high mountains and distant seas, at rushing streams and the ocean and the heavenly bodies, but meanwhile forget themselves.’ Petrarch sank into deep reflection.

Periods of decline accompanied by a high level of cultural development are generally distinguished by the dominance of the philosophy of Epicureanism, of the enjoyment of life in its refined, aesthetically ennobled forms. Ancient paganism elaborated this cult of pleasures in the age of its decline; modern neo-paganism is entering the same rut.

Has humanity, then, attained, or is it beginning to attain, happiness and joy, harmony and peace? Is it drawing nearer to them? Hardly anyone observing the symptoms of the spiritual life of European humanity would venture to say so. On the contrary, furrows of intense anxiety, agonising anguish and an unspoken, yet no less terrible because unconquerable, fear of death have settled upon its brow. ‘The despondency of nations and bewilderment’: these words from the Gospel may characterise the mood of the age. Or, as the Apocalypse says: ‘The angel poured out his bowl upon the throne of the beast, and his kingdom became dark, and they bit their tongues from suffering.’

A chilling pessimism and a kind of fear of life mingled with fear of death creep into the soul; those of little faith readily become superstitious; the sense of mystery living in the soul grows into a search for the mysterious; the need for religion seeks expression in an objectless religiosity, seeks to satisfy itself at least with the music of religious feeling; mysticism in religion, demonism without faith in God arise. The torments of the modern soul, the modern heart’s longing for God, are, of course, reflected most clearly of all in art, which cannot lie and cannot pretend. But more eloquent than any books are the epidemic suicides which, with or without an occasion, simply from anguish and the purposelessness of life, are becoming more and more frequent, especially among our nervous young people, cut off from their roots, and even among children. External events and occasions have an influence, of course, but they often merely aggravate a crisis that has been ripening.

Dostoevsky had already, with his customary penetration, noted the symptomatic significance of this phenomenon, now so greatly intensified, and connected it with the loss of religious faith. The age of the decline of the Roman Empire, saturated with unbelief and pessimism, was marked by an epidemic of suicides. The Cyrenaic philosopher Hegesias was even given the name of the orator of death and was expelled from Alexandria because of the success of his preaching of suicide. ‘Against the calamities of life there is the beneficence of death’, taught Seneca, in whom we find a veritable hymn to voluntary death. For some, death was incorporated into a system of Epicurean use of life; for others it was a way out for despair. Epicureanism proved just as lethal then as now. But the star of Bethlehem was already rising in the sky, and the learned and unlearned, wise men and shepherds, gazed upon it; a great joy was being born in the world, a joy for ever. ‘May My joy abide in you, and may your joy be perfect.’ Now twilight is again advancing over humanity, which withdraws into a stifling underground chamber and languishes there under the yoke of life; and with this ray a quiet call comes to every opening heart: ‘Come to Me, all who labour and are burdened, and I will give you rest.’ Once pessimism has appeared and become conscious, it cannot be overcome except by religious faith, for it feeds on doubt about the meaning of the world and the possibility of world harmony. Evil in the world and disharmony are so real and so invincible by external means that pessimism offers no way out unless a healing spring of faith and hope opens within the soul, making the ‘yoke’ of life ‘easy and light’, although it will not cease to be a yoke. Religion promises no painless festival of the kind of which the earthly organisers of humanity dream so vainly, but on the contrary a hard spiritual endeavour and a cross; yet it also gives the strength to bear that cross, pointing to its higher meaning and purpose and suffusing sorrow and labour with joy, that pure joy which humanity is losing.

What a striking juxtaposition arises if we compare the spiritual condition of ancient society in the first century of our era, with its culture but also its depravity and pessimism, and the spiritual condition of the first Christian communities, described in the Acts of the Apostles! What heavenly light illuminates this narrative; one cannot read it without joyful emotion! I think that never in history have people lived more joyfully than these poor communities, consisting of fishermen, slaves, shepherds and only a few representatives of the educated class. They did not possess the cultural goods with which ancient society dragged out its days, but in their souls there welled a living spring of joy and faith, the life of grace of the children of God!

Yet this modern pessimism seems to me a healthy and even noble reaction of the soul to the attempt to dethrone man, deprive him of faith in the highest good and force him to be satisfied with himself. For this self-satisfaction, complacency and equilibrium in a situation in which it is impossible for man to remain in equilibrium are already man’s perversion of his own nature, the quenching of the spirit, the selling of his birthright for a lentil stew. This is the philistinism in which our Herzen so suffocated. Man cannot endure earthly well-being; he is given only struggle, only the cross; and when he turns the accursed earth, so deeply soaked in sweat and blood, into a comfortable bed and a restful pillow for himself, forgetting all the contradictions of his existence, he sinks and becomes vulgar. No, in modern pessimism there is a pledge that man was created for eternity and for God, but, having lost this, suffers and longs all the more intensely the higher he himself stands. That is why ‘the kingdom of the beast’, that is, a civilisation raised up without God and against God, must inevitably be dark, when people begin to bite their tongues from pain. However scholars and philosophers may rack their brains, whatever substitutes for religion they may devise, they will not give man the peace that is given only by living faith in Him who promises: ‘Come to Me, and you will find rest for your souls.’

That the religious powers of the soul in unbelieving humanity have not died but only fallen dormant is proved, in my eyes, by the importance that aesthetic interest, feeling and service to beauty acquire in such epochs. Beauty is divine; God clothed the world in it at its creation, and the divine in beauty acts upon the soul directly or, as Solovyov aptly expressed it, magically, bypassing the reflective understanding. In the perception of beauty man breathes the divine, even if he denies it with his head. And in art, with its distinctive world, the modern soul finds its sole possibility of, so to speak, religious nourishment, to which it lacks direct access through prayerful and religious endeavour. Given this exceptional importance of art, it is natural to expect that in unbelieving epochs people will especially cherish aesthetics, so greedily do they seek beauty, so zealously do they devote themselves to its service. The sense of the beauty of nature is extraordinarily developed in our age, perhaps more than ever before: the music of the heavenly spheres, the heights of mountains, the abyss of the sea, the beauty of organic forms and flowers, all this enters into intimate kinship with the soul of modern man, which seeks rays of divine love in the world:

And, greedily seeking them one by one, We catch a reflection of eternal beauty; The forest sounds to us with glad tidings of it, Of it the torrent thunders with its cold stream, And the flowers speak as they sway.

Goethe’s mood of aesthetic pantheism is generally very congenial to the present age. This sense of nature, covertly religious, saves the modern soul from the dryness and lifelessness of its rationalism, as do great works of art. ‘By the Holy Spirit every soul is made alive’, a church hymn sings, and beauty is a gift of the Holy Spirit and an anchor of salvation for spiritually impoverished humanity. When I think of this life-giving effect of beauty, I recall the sick and suffering soul of Gl. Uspensky, who, like Garshin and certain others, undoubtedly suffered from the discrepancy between his intelligentsia worldview and the religious needs of his soul. Uspensky tells how, in the depths of winter in a village, his protagonist, that is, he himself, recalled his impressions of the Venus de Milo, which he had seen in Paris, and how this memory ‘straightened’ his soul (the sketch is indeed called ‘She Straightened Me Out!’). These are the touching confessions of a soul of the intelligentsia, longing for God and unaware of the true nature of its longing.

‘From the very first moment, as soon as I saw the statue, I felt that a great joy had happened to me. Until then I had been (so I suddenly felt) like this glove crumpled in the hand. Does it look anything like a human hand? No, it is simply a sort of lump of leather. But then I blew into it, and it came to resemble a human hand. Something I could not understand breathed into the depths of my crumpled, crippled, tormented being and straightened me out, ran with the tingling of a body coming to life through places where there seemed no longer to be any sensation, made my whole body crack just as it does when a person grows, made me wake just as briskly, without feeling any signs of recent sleep, and filled my expanded chest, my whole grown body, with freshness and light... Where, and in what, was the secret of this firm, peaceful, joyful state of my whole being, which had flowed into it in some unknown way? I could give myself no answer whatsoever to any question; I felt that there was no word in human language that could define the life-giving mystery of this being of stone. Smash this!’ he continues. ‘But that would be the same as depriving the world of the sun; then life is not worth living if one cannot experience this at least once in one’s life.’

Art takes possession of us even in feelings and moods wholly at odds with the modern worldview. Modern man can see a nymph in a damp grotto and naiads in the sea waves with Böcklin; he can delight in the Sistine Madonna and all the art of the Renaissance in prayerful ecstasy; the sombre, mystical grandeur of the Gothic church is accessible to him; he can praise the Creator with Beethoven, catching fire from the ardent hymn of joy and love for the Creator in the Ninth Symphony. Much that modern man does not permit himself logically and on his own personal responsibility, he can encompass aesthetically; thanks to beauty he grows wings, feels himself to be not a lump of matter or a bipedal ape, but an infinite spirit nourished by the absolute and the divine.

Yet this very translation of religious life into an exclusively aesthetic language expresses the limitations of our epoch, its one-sidedness and poverty. Aesthetic emotions do not yet create regenerative faith; aestheticism is encyclopaedic, it resembles a bee flitting from flower to flower, and can combine what is utterly incompatible.

Moreover, aesthetic perceptions are passive: they require no spiritual endeavour, no exertion of the will; they are freely given, and what is freely given can corrupt. Nowadays aesthetics and its criteria are already often proclaimed superior to ethics. Because of the dominance of aestheticism, the impression arises that our epoch, like highly cultured epochs in general, is exceptionally artistic, whereas this is explained by its one-sidedness, by the destruction of the other foundations of the human spirit; and even in a purely artistic respect it is an open question whether an inwardly rotting age of decadence can create greatness of its own in art, or whether it chiefly collects and catalogues the old. Some hold precisely the latter view. In any case, both these sides should be borne in mind when assessing modern aestheticism: its hypertrophy, the development of aesthetics at the expense of the soul’s courageous and active qualities, marks the decadent character and want of faith of our epoch. Yet at the same time, through its sands and rubbish the eternal element of the human soul is making its way, its need to live by touching the robe of the Godhead, if not with a hand raised in prayer, then <at least> with the feeling for beauty and, within it, for incorruptibility and eternity. Dostoevsky’s prophetic saying that ‘beauty will save the world’ has many meanings; leaving aside its, so to speak, apocalyptic meaning, one can say that even now beauty saves the world from despair, from rationalism, from complacent philistinism; even now it gives drink to the thirsting invalid and perhaps sustains his strength until recovery.

Indeed, has the above-described tendency of mind really established itself so decisively and finally among cultivated humanity, or is it only a phase, a mood that may pass once it has been lived through? It became clearly marked from the eighteenth century onwards, and especially sharply in the second half of the nineteenth; moreover, several waves have already succeeded one another within this tendency. The so-called Enlightenment of the eighteenth century, with its straightforward rationalism and simplified negation, can be regarded as already experienced and outlived. The age of Mephistopheles gave way to the age of Faust, the triumph of German speculative idealism that began with Kant; and whatever this idealism may have been, it cannot be regarded as an epoch of destruction alone. Then followed the brief triumph of superficial materialism and positivism with its denial of all philosophy. But materialism and positivism have now unquestionably been outlived. Religious idealism is reviving once more, together with philosophical and religious interest, which now receives such abundant nourishment from scholarly research into the history of Christianity and other religions. At the centre of these religious-philosophical and historical studies stands the investigation of everything relating to the person of the Saviour. ‘One can say,’ Professor Weinel remarks, ‘that no century has ever concerned itself so intensely with Jesus or asked about His significance as the one just past’; and let us add that at the beginning of the twentieth century this interest is not weakening but continually increasing. Apparently we are once again entering an age of Christological controversies, although conducted on a different plane and framed differently from those of the period of the ecumenical councils, namely the modern controversies about the historical person of Jesus; and, in our conviction, this new epoch is only beginning. Observers of the spiritual life of the West affirm that religious deadness is coming to an end.

The crisis of the person and of worldview described above is nowhere experienced with such tragic agony and fateful force as among us, although perhaps it is still only dimly recognised. This is explained partly by the general qualities of the Russian soul and the peculiar intensity with which it approaches questions of religious consciousness in the broad sense, and then by the specific traits of the intelligentsia’s psychology, with its weak traditions and historical ties, its theoretical cast and doctrinairism. But what has especially aggravated it here is the historical upheaval and crisis that we have lived through in recent years and are living through now. If spiritual anaemia is latent or chronic even in ordinary times, it becomes acute in exceptional epochs.

I shall not permit myself either to describe or to characterise all that we have experienced; it is too close and fresh for everyone, and the time has not yet come for an objective, impartial attitude towards it. At present Russian society, or at least that part of it capable of reflection and learning, is sunk in sombre thought and striving to draw historical lessons from its experience in politics, economics and culture, ready to gather new strength for creative work. Has the spiritual personality of the new man withstood the ordeal by fire; is all well within it? There is no doubt whatever that the political and social movement of recent years was wholly a movement of the intelligentsia, not in its participants, who came to include the masses of the people with their manifold social interests, but in its ideas, ideals, indeed its entire ideology. The power of ideas and intellectual moods in history manifested itself here with elemental force. It became completely clear that the intelligentsia in Russia is already a historical force whose significance in subsequent historical development can only increase, and that it is unquestionably a growing force of the future. Such an assessment of the historical role of the intelligentsia, and of the significance of ideas in history generally, compels us to regard the intelligentsia’s ideas and moods as having particular historical importance, and its position as doubly responsible. I believe that Russia’s historical future, its flourishing or disintegration, its growth or decay, is in the hands and under the responsibility of the intelligentsia precisely as a growing force of the future. Starting from such an assessment, one asks oneself with all the greater caution and anxiety: is all well in the soul of the intelligentsia; has that soul been shaken from its foundations, and is it sick? Above all I should not wish my judgements to be taken as condemnation or a desire to accuse anyone and shift responsibility for the horrors of which we are all, through collective responsibility, guilty. Like everyone else, I am trying to understand the causes of the corrosive bitterness that has crept into the soul in recent years, to look about me in the darkness that has enveloped us. Many sincere people in the intelligentsia who do not bind their judgements to a doctrine or programme admit that a residue of bitterness and painful bewilderment remains in their souls too. The boundary between good and evil, the permissible and the impermissible, freedom and despotic or anarchic wilfulness, party discipline and universally human morality has too often been lost and too easily crossed during this period for it not to leave an impression, not to sow doubt and anxiety in the soul. The excesses of partisanship and the tense atmosphere of political internecine strife called into question the very possibility of mutual understanding and agreement, necessary for practical constructive work and the common national cause; they threatened to make any constructive work whatever impossible. Such fears oppressed me personally with anguish in the second State Duma under the impact of my direct impressions of Duma life and work. It is impossible to calculate precisely to what extent our historical failures of recent years have been caused by unavoidable historical circumstances and dark historical forces, and to what extent by the circumstances of our intelligentsia’s mood described above. But it is certain that the latter’s share is also considerable. It was not so much particular points in the programmes of one or another party that made everyone irreconcilable and embittered enemies of everyone else; rather, it was their moral countenance that aroused a mood of quarrel and discord instead of reconciliation, creating an atmosphere of political passions untempered by anything conciliatory. The human being was absent; there were only members of different parties or representatives of different interests who could only draw dividing lines between themselves. But society cannot develop and live without a certain ethical minimum of solidarity and mutual understanding, however complex and diverse its composition; otherwise it will break up into several hostile bodies and ultimately become atomised. Thus what Dostoevsky described in Demons and Crime and Punishment only as a possibility, as a warning, and what many even regarded as political slander, has all become part of our everyday life. What we have experienced and continue to experience that is bitter and morally negative in our intelligentsia is, in my eyes, an experimental test of the weakness of the prevalent antireligious worldview and a proof by contradiction in favour of the religious one. The absence of spiritual health is reflected in every manifestation of life, in its entire tone. In modern times the historical significance of the moral person and that person’s health is generally diminished; I am inclined, on the contrary, to regard it as one of the immediate factors of historical life, and the person’s self-determination necessarily includes what they think about themselves, what they believe in, their entire creed. One cannot even imagine how all life would change, how differently past events would have taken shape and run their course, how even the dark present would have been illuminated, if we ourselves had become different. In this sense I regard the philosophical-religious credo of the Russian intelligentsia, uniting the majority of its young and old representatives regardless of their various political shades, namely its atheistic nihilism, as one of the most important factors in Russian history and one of the fundamental causes that have determined the course of events in Russia in recent years.

This proposition may seem less paradoxical to those who do not share our point of view if we dwell on one further feature of our time. Until the nineteen-hundreds the worldview and mood of the intelligentsia remained closed in upon itself, confined to circles, and one might have thought that the people’s soul was inaccessible and impervious to the intelligentsia’s preaching. The last decade, and particularly the last three years, has shown otherwise: the people, especially the younger generation in the countryside and the urban workers, prove receptive to the intelligentsia’s influence and gradually acquire its outlook or, as it is called, become ‘conscious’. I leave entirely aside the various political or economic propositions of the different programmes expounded to the people, for these are not what interest us, nor are they of primary importance in my eyes; and it is not they that truly revolutionise consciousness and bring about a profound upheaval in the people’s soul. No, every such initiation of the people into ‘consciousness’, every such assimilation to the intelligentsia, begins, in all the intelligentsia’s parties alike and under all their programmes, with the destruction of religious faith and the grafting-on of the dogmas of materialism and philosophical nihilism. Of course, the uneducated common man is wholly powerless to adopt a critical attitude and is as defenceless as a child before the influx of new teachings. With the same ease with which his enlighteners once came to believe in unbelief, he too accepts this joyless, deadening faith in unbelief. Naturally, one should not exaggerate the conscious character and firmness of his old faith, which sometimes disintegrates at the first touch. Of course, it is a childish, naive faith, but it nevertheless gave him a distinction between good and evil, taught him to live according to righteousness, duty and God. It nurtured that wondrous beauty of the people’s soul which is recorded in Russian history, in the lives of Russian saints, in Russian literature and in art. Thanks to it the people bore, and still bears, upon its shoulders the cross of its historical existence, of Tatar rule, of Muscovite statehood and of the Petersburg period, and expressed its ideal, its conception of righteous life, by giving itself the name ‘Holy Rus’: not, of course, regarding itself as holy, but seeing holiness as the ideal of life. Was Dostoevsky, that knower of hearts and lover of the people, mistaken, he who studied the people’s soul not only in health but also in sickness, not only in the native village but also in penal servitude?

And now this old faith and the spiritual order connected with it are collapsing, and a wholly new graft is being made onto the wild stock of the people’s soul. Neither Moscow nor Petersburg made, or could have made, a graft of such power and exceptional importance as the one our intelligentsia is now making upon the people. Only St Vladimir accomplished a deed of equal significance when he baptised Rus, which the intelligentsia is now gradually unbaptising. The history of Russia began with the baptism of Rus; the Christian seed fell here upon wholly virgin soil, upon uncultivated land; with unbaptising, an entirely new epoch of history begins. What, then, replaces the old faith; what rules of life, what norms? We know what the intelligentsia’s catechism says on this subject: Bentham, Marx, Comte and Feuerbach, in the Russian reworking of Lavrov or Mikhailovsky, Stirner: pursuing one’s interests separately, or pursuing those same interests together with others as class or group interests, or else the freedom of the self-asserting individual, the anarchic ‘everything is permitted’. But for the intelligentsia all these notions of interest are pure ideology, a pseudonym for ethical and even religious dispositions; it fights not for its own interest but for another’s, the interest of the oppressed classes. Moreover, even the most destructive conclusions of the most destructive doctrines do not by any means always, or fully, pass into action here, but are paralysed by inhibitory centres, by the influence of one’s milieu and public opinion, by cultural habits, and generally by the habit of handling theories and receiving various terrible words and formulas without action or fear. True, in recent years the intelligentsia too has lost its equilibrium, but this bears no comparison with the impression that the code of atheistic dogmatics must make upon the people’s soul. People worn down by illness and suffering, already inclined by their class position towards hostility to the privileged minority, people with neither intellectual preparation nor civilised habits, living generally in the most unfavourable cultural conditions, are given as dogmas for the guidance of life propositions which were, in any case, the product of a long philosophical and cultural development and grew upon culturally rich and saturated soil. Russian history is generally rich in extremes, but one can scarcely imagine a greater extreme than this imparting to an illiterate, poor peasant who has never left his village or the confines of his factory the results of the intellectual labours of Hume and Voltaire, the Encyclopaedists and Enlightenment thinkers, Feuerbach and Nietzsche, and so on, and so on. There is something truly dizzying in this. I shall not attempt to assess how fruitful this replacement of enlightenment by agitation has proved in political and social respects, but its moral-psychological and universally human significance can be assessed even now. We now have that result, the disintegration of the person, a profound paralysis of the will and moral feeling, in the sorrowful and unending epic of quasi-ideological crimes which all groups and tendencies of the intelligentsia disavow in horror. And of course they are right, insofar as no one really wanted all this, and it has proved an unforeseen result of the shocks to the people’s soul, the devastation in the treasury of its faith, brought by the doctrine of atheism in conjunction with the grievous events and trials of our time. I am wholly convinced that the extraordinary growth of crime, and moreover in the pathological atmosphere of a peculiar commitment to ideas, is a symptom of the sickness of the people’s soul, an acute reaction of the spiritual organism to the unhealthy food introduced into it in the form of new teachings united by the denial of religious values and absolute morality. Given the whole conjunction of historical circumstances, all this could not have produced any other shoots in the Russian field. Of course, I by no means forget either the horrors amidst which we have had to live in recent years, or the political circumstances and economic want which in themselves upset spiritual equilibrium and aggravated, just as they in turn were aggravated by, the spiritual crisis I am pointing to. It had another consequence as well, incidental but very important: it created and intensified internecine strife, giving it a tinge of religious fanaticism, making it a struggle not only of different political opinions but also of different faiths. This circumstance explains many features of the grievous and tragic events of the autumn of 1905, whatever their causes in all their complexity may have been. Even now this religious internecine strife greatly clouds Russia’s horizons and makes our position more difficult. Our people needs knowledge, needs enlightenment, but an enlightenment that would not make it spiritually poorer than it was or disintegrate its moral personality. Christian enlightenment, developing and educating the person, rather than the chance assimilation of scraps of knowledge used as a means of agitation: this is what our people needs. Russia’s historical future, the regeneration and restoration of our homeland’s power or its final disintegration, perhaps its political death, depends, in my conviction, on whether we resolve this cultural and educational task: to enlighten the people without disintegrating its moral personality. History entrusts these destinies to the hands of the intelligentsia. The experience of recent years has shown that it finds access to the people’s soul, while at the same time it has always possessed a passionate, irrepressible, self-sacrificing desire to serve the people in the form in which it understands that service. Everything lies in this understanding, and that is why the worldview of the intelligentsia itself acquires such exceptional importance, like the condition of the nerves and brain of the entire country. In the heart and mind of the Russian intelligentsia the struggle between good and evil, the life-giving and the deadly, the constructive and the destructive principle in Russia is taking place; and insofar as what happens among us unquestionably also has world significance, this struggle too is a world struggle. But this understanding of its historical mission and its significance should increase tenfold its sense of responsibility for its actions. Nowhere else, after all, is there such a situation: a great people, helpless, spiritually as defenceless as a child, at almost the same level of enlightenment as in the time of St Vladimir, and an intelligentsia that brings the enlightenment of the West chiefly in the form of various latest words changing with the speed of fashion, and that, however it is restrained or kept away, finds and of course will continue to find a path to this child. Two electricities: when they meet, what will they give, beneficent light and warmth, or destructive, incinerating lightning?

If the worldview of the intelligentsia itself, which it carries to the people, remains as it is now, the character of its influence upon the people will not change either; it will merely grow in quantity. But of course one cannot suppose that the intelligentsia will succeed, at least in the foreseeable future, in converting the whole mass of the people to its faith; some of it, in any case, will remain faithful to its former principles of life. On the ground of this difference of faiths an internal religious war must inevitably arise, comparable only to the wars of the Reformation. The people’s spiritual and state power will then melt away, and the vitality of the state organism diminish until the first blow from outside. The events we have lived through warn us sufficiently against this path. But can the heavenly thunder have rolled above us in vain? After resting a little and recovering from what we have endured, shall we really begin living in the old way again, with the old feelings, old thoughts and old frivolity, as though nothing had happened, nothing had been revealed, nothing gained? It simply failed, and that is all; it might not have failed if there had been a little more strength; we must try to ensure that next time it does not fail. The Russian intellectual is prone to this carefree laziness of soul, and such a soothing, pre-liberation mood is already beginning to take shape both in the press and in circles, as though we had not seen the Gorgon’s head, as though we had merely miscalculated and needed only to retreat a few steps, to return to our old positions. No, we cannot return to the old spiritual positions; we are separated from them by a chasm full of corpses. We have grown up and aged historically; it is useless and unworthy to pretend to be young. We must begin something new, take account of historical experience, recognise ourselves and our mistakes within it; for otherwise, if we see mistakes only in others, on the opposing side, we shall remain hypnotised by our hostility towards it and learn nothing. Inward reflection, self-examination, the accumulation of spiritual strength and the creation of culture are needed.

This self-renewal must touch upon various aspects, but if we descend to the very bottom, into the depths of the soul, then this creation of a new person and a new life must begin with religious inward reflection, with a new and more conscious religious self-determination. The new man, the new type of public figure, can be born only on the ground of this inward reflection. This will be that new thing in Russian life of which Dostoevsky dreamed as he was dying, in his last novel, that new thing which was absent from Russian life in recent years and which perhaps ruined the latest social movement and condemned it to impotence. Unlike England, Russia, apart from isolated exceptions, has not yet seen a Christian intelligentsia which, putting the ardour of its soul, its thirst to serve others and to undertake the endeavour of the cross into the Christian endeavour of active love, would overcome that oppressive atmosphere of hostility and hatred of humanity in which we suffocate and in which nothing but destruction can prosper. There is so much potential religious energy in our intelligentsia; it so persistently offers sacrifices upon its altar ‘to the unknown god’: can this ignorance really be for ever? I know how far from reality, how ridiculous this dream of a Christian intelligentsia may seem, and of an end to the breach between intelligentsia and people now sustained by religious disagreement. But this dream is too beautiful for us to part with it, and its realisation too necessary for life. New light is needed, new moisture poured upon the parched and cracked earth. In this spiritual desolation of our epoch, in its hopelessness, lies our greatest hope: spiritual death may prove the eve of spiritual resurrection, as it did nineteen centuries ago, and as it has repeatedly done since in history, when the Christian flame flared up with new strength from a barely smouldering fire.

As historical events unfold, the religious meaning of the Russian drama becomes ever clearer. Expressing itself in political and social crisis, it is rooted in the spiritual disintegration and inner discord of the Russian people. Despite so many sacrifices and trials, it has not been resolved. The disease has been driven inwards; it has merely passed from an acute to a chronic condition. We have learnt by experience that the commandment cannot be violated with impunity: ‘Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all the rest will be added to you.’ We concerned ourselves exclusively with this rest, neglecting man’s spiritual world, this true creative power of history. And we lost our spiritual equilibrium and scattered in different directions in pursuit of this ‘rest’, which became ever more fragmented and divided people. Here lies the true cause of our historical impotence, of our weakness in creation alongside such energy in destruction. Only a renewed person is equal to the task of setting disordered life in order, but this renewal is not produced by revising programmes or tactics or by a new political combination, however important these latter may be in themselves. The birth of the new man, spoken of in the conversation with Nicodemus, can take place only in the depths of the human soul, in the hidden recesses of the self-determining person. The endeavour of historical creation cannot be separated from the spiritual endeavour of the regeneration of the human person, which does not take place apart from our will. Gladstone was right: the most decisive clash of good and evil now takes place not in parliaments or popular assemblies but in human souls, and Russia’s historical destinies are now weighed in that invisible inner struggle taking place in the Russian soul. To that soul, to that struggle, and to us in whom it takes place, there therefore applies the stern word of Moses, the dying testament of Israel’s prophetic leader to his people, which predetermined its earthly destinies: ‘I call heaven and earth to witness: I have set before you life and death, curse and blessing. Choose life, then, that you and your seed may live!’
