II. THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST AND MODERN CONSCIOUSNESS
II.
In the book of the Acts of the Apostles, which tells how the apostles preached the faith revealed to them in Christ, who by His death and resurrection accomplished the work of human salvation, the episode of the Apostle Paul’s preaching in Athens, the cultural capital of that time, a centre of philosophy, art and literature, is especially close and intelligible to our own age (Acts, ch. 17). Anyone in our own time who, having received the truth of the Gospel into their heart, wished to speak openly about this faith would feel that they had come with preaching that sounds wild and strange to modern ears, ‘unscientific’ and unnecessary, representing ‘foolishness to the Greeks’: as though they had come to Athens, ‘this city full of idols’, on entering which even the great apostle ‘was stirred in spirit’. In inventing idols, modernity has proved even keener, more inventive and more subtle than Greek Athens, for it has also created abstract intellectual idols in the form of all manner of ‘scientific’ and unscientific theories, in which the modern soul has become helplessly entangled: the pantheon of modern Athenians contains political, socialist, aesthetic and scientific idols. Nor is this any longer the naïve, simple-hearted idolatry characteristic of the pre-Christian world; here one senses a rarer, more conscious and more obstinate spirit of resistance and idolatry, armed with the power of knowledge, abstract thought and refined sensibilities. The late hour before dawn casts sharper and denser shadows than the early hour of twilight.
‘All the Athenians and the foreigners living among them spent their time in nothing more gladly than in telling or hearing something new’: a trait preserved in its entirety among present-day Athenians too, so eager for every kind of aesthetic and intellectual entertainment. The Athenians therefore brought the Apostle Paul to the Areopagus and said to him: ‘May we know what this new teaching is that you preach, for you bring something frightening to our ears. We therefore wish to know: what is this?’ Yet when the Apostle Paul had set before them the teaching concerning God and Christ, the Athenians, their curiosity sufficiently satisfied, reacted to hearing of the resurrection of the dead: some mocked, while others said: ‘We shall hear you about this another time’; so the Apostle Paul ‘departed from among them’, and only some, ‘joining him, believed’.
No different reception should be expected from modern Athenians if one speaks to them seriously and sincerely of Christ’s resurrection, in which lie all the power, all the essence and all the content of Christianity (‘If Christ has not risen, our faith is vain’). Yet even in modern Athens some will be found who have already lost their inner equilibrium and are vaguely seeking a way out of the labyrinth of modern thought, although they do not admit it, sometimes even to themselves. Of them too one may say what the Apostle Paul said at the beginning of his preaching to the Athenians: ‘Athenians, in everything I see that you are somehow especially devout. For as I passed by and examined your sacred objects, I also found an altar on which was written: “To an Unknown God”. It is this One, whom you worship without knowing, that I proclaim to you.’
The modern Athenians who are close to us, namely the Russian intelligentsia, our own, dear to us and bound to our hearts by ties of blood, are indeed ‘especially devout’. They serve their faith, their religion, with utter devotion, to the point of martyrdom and heroism. They are holy in their devotion to their faith, but it is precisely in this faith that they have gone astray: they have lost their way in a dense forest and, finding no path, not knowing what to cleave to utterly and finally, where to give the ardour of their soul, they have become nothing but yearning, pain, torment and weariness. Within their sick and troubled heart they continually raise altars on which sacrifice is offered without ceasing, but they themselves do not know to whom to dedicate their altar; they do not know the name of their God. And their altar proves to be dedicated to ‘an unknown God’: to God, but unknown; unknown, but God. Thus this genuinely religious thirst is combined with a poverty of religious knowledge and faith, and remains so until at last the true name of the unknown is revealed. In our own day, the worship of the unknown God finds expression in service to one vague idea, one spiritual idol: the idea of progress, which represents, as it were, a particular instance of the universal law of evolution. Infinite progress, and therefore unknown and unfathomable to the human being, infinite evolution: these are the Zeus and Olympus of modern Athenians. Of this idea too, this altar ‘to an unknown God’, one may say in the Apostle Paul’s words: ‘It is this One, whom you worship without knowing, that I proclaim to you.’ For the doctrine of progress and universal evolution is a vague, unconscious preaching of Christ’s Resurrection, while the preaching of Christ’s Resurrection includes the truth contained in the doctrine of evolution and progress, if only these doctrines are set within their proper bounds and given a correct interpretation. How is this so?
Humanity has never regarded, and does not regard, its life, lying in evil and sin, poisoned by hatred and crime, distorted by weakness and limitation, as the due and normal lot of the human race. While not believing in the Saviour, it retains the need for salvation and faith in salvation. It now believes that, even if the individual human being or the individual generation will not be saved and cannot be saved, humanity as a whole will nevertheless be saved in the persons of future generations, which constitute, as it were, the goal of history, the way out of its tragic labyrinth. The path of progress is the path of humanity’s salvation; progress is its salvation. Thus modern humanity thinks, feels and believes. In the name of this faith, in the name of humanity’s salvation through progress, sacrifices are made; life, peace and freedom are given up. Humanity’s salvation in progress is modern humanity’s guiding flame: deprive it of this faith, extinguish this flame, and it will be left in impenetrable darkness; and it is precisely the most valiant, the purest and the most faithful who will be unable to endure this darkness.
But is there really salvation in progress? Does it save humanity from darkness, sorrow, humiliation and downfall? Is anyone saved, or can anyone be saved, by it alone? To these questions we reply three times: no, no and no.
What constitutes a living reality; what is alive: the human individual or abstract humanity? Can we speak of the human being as an existing reality if persons are continually destroyed or deprived of value, if humanity itself is reduced to a mere succession of generations and persons? Yet in modern eyes the concept of humanity has only this meaning. The curse of homelessness and of the mutual estrangement of generations inevitably falls upon people as soon as we begin to conceive of humanity in this way. The part cannot replace the whole: if, in present-day society, the capitalists enjoy all material goods, we cannot say that modern society is flourishing; and if, at the end of time, the last generations really do flourish and prove to be the fortunate heirs of all historical progress, there is equally no reason to think or say that humanity has been saved in their persons, that the tragedy of history has been overcome. The complacent capitalist who does not care for those close to him, his workers in particular, is the last person who can be considered the embodiment of an ideal. But the citizen of the Zukunftstaat can serve as such an embodiment just as little if he complacently forgets our sufferings, the price at which this Zukunftstaat was bought in history. In conceptions of the state of the future, of humanity saved by progress, one is inevitably forced to waver between two possibilities. Either the people of the future, with a more sensitive conscience and a more developed sense of universal human solidarity and love, will be tormented by the knowledge that their well-being was bought at so high a price, in which case they are a thousand times more pitiable and more unhappy than we are, and wholly unsuited to the role of the fortunate people of the future who crown world history; or, conversely, if they forget everything and attribute everything to themselves, we have a repulsive ugliness that makes one sick and queasy at the thought that so high a price was paid, that martyrs’ blood was shed, for these gentlemen’s philistine contentment and well-being. I am always astonished that those who profess the religion of progress and await the Zukunftstaat fail to notice the utter hopelessness inherent in their position, the wholly illusory character of their ideal. No, the idea of progress does not and cannot provide a way out of life’s tragic contradictions; human beings cannot find salvation from them in progress.
But progress is not salvation for a further reason: it does not conquer the chief enemy that strips life of value and meaning, death, which annihilates all values with its terrible nihilism. Sometimes people attempt to gain a philistine victory over death by blunting its tragic edge, inventing a means of making it as painless and peaceful as possible. The fact that death exists devalues life not merely by turning it into something temporary and contingent; it destroys the very bond of humanity and stamps all its spiritual life with fragmentation. What is conceived in the idea of ‘eternal life’ presupposes a new, qualitatively different way of apprehending being, distinct from the fragmentation of the temporal. And the thirst for complete, absolute knowledge and feeling that we experience in our soul requires, for its satisfaction, precisely a special life, qualitatively different from the one we know, an eternal life; only in it can the riddle of the human spirit be resolved. We cannot satisfy this hunger for eternity; we must not stifle it, for that would mean extinguishing the fire of Prometheus within ourselves, committing the greatest spiritual crime, a betrayal of the Holy Spirit. For future generations the same dilemma remains: either the same mysteriousness, contradictoriness, insatiability and incapacity to be satisfied of the spirit as in us, only greater, sharper and more tormenting, or dull, philistine complacency; may that never be!
What, then, does the doctrine of Christ’s resurrection give us, together with the coming universal resurrection founded upon it, the transfiguration of the world and of us within it, the new heaven and the new earth, the New Jerusalem in which ‘nothing shall any longer be accursed’, in which ‘God shall wipe away every tear, and death shall be no more, neither mourning nor crying nor pain shall there be any more, for the former things have passed away’ (Revelation XXI, XXII), and ‘time shall be no more’? It gives the only possible and conceivable way out of the tragic contradictions just indicated; it affirms the only rational and acceptable ‘theory of progress’. And what breaks through timidly and hesitantly as intimations in the hopes of modern humanity, it proclaims to the world in the solemn hymn of victory: ‘Christ is risen!’
Christ is risen: in the mystical centre of the world the decisive collision of good and evil, life and death, has already taken place; goodness and life have already won a decisive and unconditional victory, and Christ is risen. Such is the absolute fact that Christianity proclaims to the world and in which it lays its foundation. The resurrection of Christ is the covenant and promise of the preservation of all values, and above all of the absolute value of human individuals, mercilessly mown down by death, and with them the restoration of everything eternal and valuable that was created in history. It is the salvation of spiritual goods, of the true values of culture, the participation of historical humanity in universal creative activity, in teaching within the universe. This also gives an answer to the question of what purpose human history serves after Christ, why we are condemned to suffer and languish in this vale of sorrow when eternal truth has won its final victory and it has already been said: ‘Take courage, I have overcome the world’ (John XVII, 33). The universe, with its centre, humanity, the soul of the world, and with humanity’s history, is a divine-human work, not only divine but also human. Humanity can neither save itself nor transfigure itself and the world by its own powers, but neither should it be saved by force, like a child: it must attain inner maturity by way of the freedom of temptations; it must accomplish the historical process. And in Christian faith this process receives an absolute goal, although one lying outside itself: it prepares the world and humanity for universal transformation, for the meeting with Him who comes in glory and power. Whatever this process may be in its immediate content and earthly results, in its final goal it is in any event progress, since it is the path forward towards the absolute goal, towards the New Jerusalem. Consequently, participation in historical endeavour and in the realisation of progress is a task that is not only obligatory but also full of profound, incontrovertible meaning, although that meaning is not determined by immediate earthly results. And no act of creative endeavour, a gift of the Holy Spirit, is cast aside or destroyed by death, but is preserved as a bridge to the future, as something destined to be made eternal and to grow in the coming Transfiguration and Resurrection. And peoples will rise again in their historical and psychological individuality, with whatever in them is immortal, whatever is of the Holy Spirit; and the individuals who have died, without whom the world becomes empty, will be restored. All questions will be resolved, and we shall understand not as ‘in a mirror, in a riddle, but face to face’.
The dream of the New Jerusalem, the forefeeling of the world’s salvation and of universal resurrection and transfiguration, lies deep in the souls even of those who have rejected faith in the Saviour. Salvation is a real, accomplished fact, and its presence in human life cannot be removed. From this arise theories of progress, dreams of the Zukunftstaat, this faint reflection of the unearthly light of the New Jerusalem. But how pale and distorted these ideals are once they have been severed from their religious root and turned from ideals of the universal preservation and restoration of all values into a dreary, purposeless dream of the brief earthly happiness of later generations, bought at the price of the blood, sufferings and lives of those who came before. How everything most cherished and precious degenerates and withers when severed from its parent trunk! Truly, ‘without Me you can do nothing’.
But already we hear the chief logical idol of our time being brought forward against us: ‘scientificity’, before which many even courageous minds give way and bend the knee. We hear the hoarse, creaking, deathly voice of its oracles saying: how can anyone speak of resurrection, of miracles, of things of this kind at all, when science long ago abolished them and consigned them to the ranks of obsolete superstitions! Let us seek shelter beneath the canopy of one of the chief intellectual idols housed within the idol of scientificity, the idea of evolution. This doctrine, likewise an echo of forgotten Revelation, declares that everything develops, that new forms of being, new forms of life, are created. Through evolution the first living cell arose from dead matter; through the combination of these cells the animal world was formed; and the evolution of the animal world created Plato and Darwin, Newton and Shakespeare. This theory, like all scientific theories, denies the miraculous, although its adherents do not probe the true philosophical meaning of that concept, through mental laziness considering a miracle to be only a direct negation of the laws of nature. Yet without itself noticing, it leads us into a world of miracles, a world of new and continuous creation, a world of constant transfigurations. It is precisely the theory of evolution that brings us right up to the idea of universal resurrection and transfiguration. The theory of evolution establishes only the order in which a new creation comes into being, and by describing these conditions it makes us insensitive to the fact that we live in an atmosphere of continuous miracle. Is the appearance of life on our planet, of new species and, finally, of culture not a miracle, not a new creation? Rub your eyes and look around. Is it not a miracle that from an unenlightened mother and father, by the dark path of development in the womb, a great genius and luminary of humanity suddenly bursts into the world, bringing it a new message?
Our age likes above all to employ the idea of ‘natural necessity’, scientifically knowable and formulated in the laws of nature, setting against it an understanding of the world as the embodiment of creative ideas, as a continuous miracle. In doing so, philosophers of this tendency overlook just one kind of natural necessity: the natural necessity of… miracle, of new creation, of new life. For example, Marxism maintains that, by virtue of scientifically apprehended natural necessity—the development of the productive forces—a miracle occurs at a certain stage of that development: social transfiguration arrives, prehistory ends and history begins; or, as the same Marx formulates this thought in another way, the realm of necessity is followed by the realm of freedom. In place of a malicious, unhappy human world torn apart by enmity, there suddenly arises a radiant realm of human-gods, full of harmony and joy; history begins; a marvellous butterfly flies out of a filthy, ugly cocoon; a filthy egg bursts and inside it is a bird of paradise…
And so, on the basis of the very same concept of natural necessity with which modern scientific thought operates in Darwinism, Marxism and evolutionism generally, we too postulate and affirm the necessity of a miracle: Christ’s Resurrection, and after it universal resurrection and transfiguration as the highest and final link in cosmic evolution. The heart of the question is precisely where to seek the demiurge of the world who creates this ‘natural necessity’. Are we to see it in the half-fantastic, half-mythological conception of inert matter, wholly alien to our inner, immediate experience, or in the luminous power of the human and the world spirit? These initial philosophical and religious premises cannot be supplied by science; the human spirit draws them from its own depths, from philosophical and religious consciousness. For Christianity, death is not a physical but a moral necessity, the consequence of sin, of the separation of body and spirit that ought not to be; the corresponding physical processes are merely the outward realisation of an inward moral necessity. And if the sinful human being inevitably proves mortal, then immortality belongs, with ‘natural necessity’, to the sinless human being, to perfect holiness. ‘It was impossible for death to hold Him’: thus the apostles spoke in their preaching of the Risen One after the descent of the Holy Spirit.
‘One of two things: either the Christ of the Gospels is a myth, that is, either He never existed at all, or the historical Christ in reality differs greatly from the Christ of the Gospels (both opinions are widespread in our time); or such a Righteous One, if indeed He ever walked upon this earth, could no longer have become the prey of corruption. To acknowledge the contrary is to assert the impotence of the moral principle in the world altogether, to fall into such boundless pessimism that life seems a diabolical invention and dreams of progress foolish childishness. “If Christ had not risen, if Caiaphas had proved right, and Herod and Pilate wise, the world would have proved meaningless, a realm of evil, deceit and death. The question was not whether someone’s life had ceased, but whether true life, the life of a perfectly righteous man, had ceased. If such a life could not overcome the enemy, what hope remained for the future?”
In the resurrection of Christ the question of the meaning of life and history, of the truth of the world, was being decided. In Him everything would have died, and with Him everything rises again, is filled with reason and becomes radiant with light; even that theory of evolution and progress with which humanity now shuts itself off from religion receives its highest meaning and significance.
‘If Christ has not risen, our faith is vain’; history is vain, progress is vain, culture is vain: all is vanity, corruption and meaninglessness.
Christ is risen!
