III. HEROISM AND ASCETIC STRIVING
III.
(From Reflections on the Religious Nature of the Russian Intelligentsia)
Russia has lived through a revolution. This revolution did not yield what was expected of it. In the opinion of many, the positive gains of the liberation movement remain, even to this day, problematic to say the least. Russian society, exhausted by its previous exertions and failures, is in a kind of stupor, apathy, spiritual disarray and despondency. Russian statehood as yet shows no signs of the renewal and strengthening it so badly needs, and, as though in an enchanted sleeping kingdom, everything in it has again come to a standstill, bound fast in slumber. Russian civic life, darkened by numerous executions, an extraordinary rise in crime and a general coarsening of morals, has positively gone backwards. Russian literature is flooded by a turbid wave of pornography and sensational productions. There is reason to grow despondent and fall into profound doubt concerning Russia’s further future. And, at all events, now, after everything we have lived through, neither the naïve, somewhat over-idealistic Slavophile faith nor the rosy utopias of the old Westernism are any longer possible. The revolution has called into question the very viability of Russian civic life and statehood; without taking account of this historical experience, of the historical lessons of the revolution, no assertion can be made about Russia, and neither Slavophile nor Westernist commonplaces can be repeated.
The political crisis was followed by a spiritual crisis too, demanding deep, concentrated reflection, inward examination, self-scrutiny and self-criticism. If Russian society really is still alive and capable of life, if it harbours the seeds of the future, then this vitality must show itself first and foremost in the willingness and ability to learn from history. For history is not merely a chronology counting off successive events: it is living experience, experience of good and evil, which constitutes a condition of spiritual growth; and nothing is so dangerous as the deathly immobility of minds and hearts, the inert conservatism that contents itself with repeating old commonplaces or simply brushes aside life’s lessons in the secret hope of a new ‘upsurge of feeling’, spontaneous, accidental and uncomprehended.
Reflecting on what we have lived through in recent years, one cannot see in all this a historical accident or merely the play of elemental forces. A historical judgement was pronounced here; an assessment was made of the various participants in the historical drama; an entire historical epoch was summed up. The ‘liberation movement’ did not lead to the results to which it should have led, did not bring reconciliation or renewal, has not yet strengthened statehood (although it left a shoot for the future in the State Duma) or raised the national economy, not merely because it proved too weak to combat the dark forces of history: no, it was also unable to prevail because it itself proved unequal to its task, itself suffered from weakness caused by inner contradictions. The Russian revolution developed enormous destructive energy, resembling a gigantic earthquake, but its creative forces proved far weaker than its destructive ones. In many souls this bitter awareness has settled as the most general outcome of what we have lived through. Should this disappointment be passed over in silence, and would it not be better to express it, so as to ask why this is so?..
It has already been pointed out above that the Russian revolution was a revolution of the intelligentsia. Its spiritual leadership belonged to the intelligentsia, with its worldview, habits, tastes and social ways. Members of the intelligentsia themselves will, of course, not acknowledge this, being members of the intelligentsia, and each, in accordance with his catechism, will name one or another social class as the revolution’s sole driving force. Without disputing that, in the absence of a whole conjunction of historical circumstances (among which the unfortunate war of course takes first place) and of very serious vital interests among the various social classes and groups, it would have been impossible to stir them from their places and draw them into a state of ferment, we nevertheless insist that the revolution was supplied with all its intellectual baggage, all its spiritual equipment, together with its frontline fighters, initiators, agitators and propagandists, by the intelligentsia. It gave spiritual form to the instinctive strivings of the masses, set them alight with its enthusiasm; in a word, it was the nerves and brain of the revolution’s gigantic body. In this sense the revolution is the spiritual child of the intelligentsia, and consequently its history is a historical judgement upon that intelligentsia.
The soul of the intelligentsia, this creation of Peter, is at the same time the key to the future destinies of Russian statehood and public life. For better or worse, the destinies of Petrine Russia lie in the hands of the intelligentsia, however hounded and persecuted it may be, however weak and even powerless it may seem at a given moment. It is that window on Europe cut by Peter through which Western air enters our country, at once life-giving and poisonous. This handful possesses a monopoly of European education and enlightenment in Russia; it is their chief conduit into the depths of a people a hundred million strong; and if Russia cannot dispense with this enlightenment without risking political and national death, how lofty and momentous is this historical vocation of the intelligentsia, how fearfully immense its historical responsibility towards our country’s future, both near and distant! That is why, for a patriot who loves his people and suffers over the needs of Russian statehood, there is now no more absorbing subject of reflection than the nature of the Russian intelligentsia, and at the same time no more tormenting and anxious concern than whether the Russian intelligentsia will rise to its task, whether Russia will obtain the educated class it so badly needs, with a Russian soul, an enlightened mind and a firm will; for otherwise the intelligentsia, in alliance with the Tatar spirit of which there is still so much in our statehood and public life, will destroy Russia. After the revolution, as a result of its experience, many in Russia suffered an acute disillusionment with the intelligentsia and its historical fitness; in its peculiar failures they also saw the intelligentsia’s inadequacy. The revolution laid bare, emphasised and intensified aspects of its spiritual countenance whose true significance had previously been divined only by a few (and above all by Dostoevsky); it proved to be a kind of spiritual mirror for all Russia and especially for its intelligentsia. To pass over these traits in silence now would be not only impermissible but downright criminal. For what else can all our hope now rest upon but that the years of social decline will also prove years of saving repentance, in which spiritual forces will be reborn and new people, new workers in the Russian field, will be formed? Russia cannot renew itself without first renewing, together with much else, its intelligentsia too. And to speak of this loudly and openly is a duty of conviction and patriotism.
The character of the Russian intelligentsia in general took shape under the influence of two basic factors, one external and one internal. The first was the uninterrupted and merciless pressure of the police machinery, capable of flattening, of utterly annihilating a group weaker in spirit; and the fact that it preserved its life and energy even under this crushing machinery testifies, at all events, to its altogether exceptional courage and vitality. The isolation from life in which the entire atmosphere of the old regime placed the intelligentsia intensified the traits of an ‘underground’ psychology already characteristic of its spiritual countenance, froze it spiritually, sustaining and to a certain extent justifying its political monoideism (its ‘Hannibal’s oath’ to fight the autocracy) and making normal spiritual development difficult for it. More favourable external conditions for this development are only now coming into being, and in this, at any rate, one cannot fail to see a spiritual gain of the liberation movement. The second, internal factor determining the character of our intelligentsia is its distinctive worldview and the spiritual disposition bound up with it. I cannot but see the intelligentsia’s most fundamental characteristic in its attitude towards religion. Nor can one understand the fundamental characteristics of the Russian revolution without keeping this attitude of the intelligentsia towards religion at the centre of attention. But Russia’s historical future too is concentrated in the resolution of the question of how the intelligentsia will define itself in relation to religion: whether it will remain in its former, deathly condition, or whether in this sphere there still awaits us an upheaval, a genuine revolution in minds and hearts.
It has repeatedly been pointed out, following Dostoevsky, that the spiritual countenance of the Russian intelligentsia contains traits of religiosity, sometimes approaching even a Christian religiosity. These qualities were cultivated above all by its external historical fate: on the one hand, governmental persecution, which fostered in it a sense of martyrdom and confession of faith; on the other, its forcible severance from life, which developed dreaminess, sometimes over-idealism, utopianism and, in general, an insufficient sense of reality. Connected with this is the fact that the firmly established ‘bourgeois’ way of life of Western Europe, with its everyday virtues and its intensive, labouring economy, but also its winglessness and narrowness, remains psychologically alien to it, although perhaps only for the time being. We have a classic expression of the spiritual collision between the Russian intellectual and European bourgeois philistinism in Herzen’s writings. Kindred moods have been expressed more than once in the most recent Russian literature too. The finished character of this way of life, its attachment to the earth, its spiritual crawling, disgust the Russian intellectual, although we all know how much he has to learn from the Western person, at least in the technique of life and work. In its turn, this wandering Rus’, this free company of émigrés still living on the inspirations of Stenka Razin and Emelka Pugachev, even if translated into modern revolutionary jargon, is repellent and incomprehensible to the Western bourgeoisie too; and in recent years this spiritual antagonism seems to have reached its greatest intensity.
If we try to analyse this ‘anti-bourgeois character’ of the Russian intelligentsia, it proves to be a mixtum compositum made up of very different elements. There is a share of hereditary gentry privilege here, free for generations from cares over daily bread and generally from the everyday, ‘bourgeois’ side of life. There is a considerable dose of simple lack of culture, of unfamiliarity with persistent, disciplined work and an ordered way of life. But there is undoubtedly also a certain, though perhaps not so very large, dose of unconsciously religious revulsion from spiritual philistinism, from the ‘kingdom of this world’ with its settled self-satisfaction.
A certain otherworldliness, an eschatological dream of the City of God, of the coming kingdom of truth and justice (under various socialist pseudonyms), and then the striving to save humanity, if not from sin, then from suffering, constitute, as is well known, the constant and distinctive features of the Russian intelligentsia. Pain at life’s disharmony and the striving to overcome it distinguish its greatest writers too (Gl. Uspensky, Garshin). In this striving for the City to Come, beside which earthly reality pales, the intelligentsia has perhaps preserved the traits of its lost life in the Church in their most recognisable form. How often in the Second State Duma, in the turbulent speeches of the atheistic Left Bloc, I heard, strange to say, echoes of the psychology of Orthodoxy; suddenly the influence of its spiritual grafting revealed itself.
In general, the spiritual habits cultivated by the Church also explain more than one of the best traits of the Russian intelligentsia, which it loses as it moves away from the Church: for example, a certain puritanism, rigorist morals, a distinctive asceticism and, generally, strictness of personal life. Such leaders of the Russian intelligentsia as Dobrolyubov and Chernyshevsky, for example (both seminarians brought up in religious clerical families), preserve their former moral countenance almost untouched, although their historical children and grandchildren gradually lose it. Christian traits, sometimes absorbed without knowledge or intention through the surrounding environment, from the family, from a nursemaid, from a spiritual atmosphere permeated by Church life, shine through the spiritual countenance of the best and greatest figures of the Russian revolution. Since, however, this merely obscures the full, actual opposition between the Christian disposition of soul and that of the intelligentsia, it is important to establish that these traits are acquired, borrowed and, in a certain sense, atavistic, and disappear as earlier Christian habits weaken and the intelligentsia type reveals itself more fully, a type which manifested itself with the greatest force in the days of the revolution and then shook off even the last survivals of Christianity.
The Russian intelligentsia, especially in earlier generations, also possesses a sense of guilt towards the people, this kind of ‘social repentance’, of course not before God but before ‘the people’ or ‘the proletariat’. Although these feelings of the ‘repentant nobleman’ or ‘classless intellectual’ also have, in their historical origin, a certain social flavour of gentry privilege, they too impress a peculiar depth and suffering upon the face of the intelligentsia. To this must also be added its spirit of sacrifice, the constant willingness of its best representatives to make every kind of sacrifice and even their seeking after sacrifices. Whatever the psychology of this spirit of sacrifice, it too strengthens the intelligentsia’s otherworldly disposition, which makes its countenance so alien to philistinism and lends it traits of a distinctive religiosity.
And yet, despite all this, it is well known that there is no intelligentsia more atheistic than the Russian. Atheism is the common faith into which those entering the bosom of the intelligentsia’s humanistic church are baptised, and not only those from the educated class but also those from the people. So it has been from the beginning, from Belinsky, the spiritual father of the Russian intelligentsia. And just as every social milieu develops its habits and its particular beliefs, so the traditional atheism of the Russian intelligentsia has become a self-evident characteristic, one not even discussed, a sort of mark of good form. A certain education and enlightenment are, in the eyes of our intelligentsia, synonymous with religious indifference and denial. There is no dispute about this among the various factions, parties and ‘tendencies’: it unites them all. It thoroughly permeates, to the very bottom, the meagre culture of the intelligentsia, with its newspapers, journals, tendencies, programmes, rights and prejudices, just as breathing oxygenates the blood that then spreads throughout the organism. There is no more important fact in the history of enlightenment than this. And at the same time one must acknowledge that Russian atheism is by no means a conscious negation, the fruit of complex, agonising and prolonged work of mind, heart and will, the outcome of a personal life. No, it is most often taken on faith and preserves these traits of naïve religious faith, only turned inside out; and this is not altered by its assuming militant, dogmatic, pseudo-scientific forms. This faith takes as its foundation a number of uncritical, untested assertions: namely, that science is competent to settle questions of religion definitively too, and moreover settles them only in a negative sense; to this is added a suspicious attitude towards philosophy, especially metaphysics, likewise rejected and condemned in advance.
This faith is shared by the learned and the unlearned, the old and the young. It is acquired in adolescence, which, biographically, of course comes earlier for some and later for others. At this age the rejection of religion is usually received easily and even naturally, religion being immediately replaced by faith in science and progress. Once our intelligentsia has taken its stand on this ground, in most cases it remains with this faith all its life, considering these questions already sufficiently elucidated and finally settled, hypnotised by the universal unanimity of this opinion. Adolescents become mature men; some acquire serious scientific knowledge, become prominent specialists, and in that case they throw their authority as ‘men of science’ into the balance in favour of the atheism believed in during adolescence and dogmatically accepted on the school bench, even though in this sphere of questions they may possess no more authority than any thinking and feeling person. Thus a spiritual atmosphere is created in our higher education too, where the rising intelligentsia is formed. And it is astonishing how little impression people of profound learning, intellect and genius made upon the Russian intelligentsia when they called it to deepen its religious life, to awaken from dogmatic slumber; how little notice was taken of our religious thinkers and writers, the Slavophiles, Vl. Solovyov, Bukharev, Prince S. Trubetskoy and others; how deaf our intelligentsia remained to the religious preaching of Dostoevsky and even L. N. Tolstoy, despite the outward cult of his name.
What is most striking in Russian atheism is its dogmatism, the religious frivolity, one might say, with which it is accepted. Until quite recently, after all, Russian ‘educated’ society simply failed to notice or understand the religious problem in all its immense and exceptional importance and urgency, and took any interest in religion only insofar as it was connected with politics or the preaching of atheism. Our intelligentsia’s ignorance in matters of religion is astonishing. I say this not as an accusation, since perhaps there is sufficient historical justification for it, but as a diagnosis of its spiritual condition. In relation to religion our intelligentsia has simply not yet emerged from adolescence; it has not yet thought seriously about religion or consciously defined its own religious position; it has not yet lived through religious thought, and therefore remains, strictly speaking, not above religion, as it thinks itself, but outside religion. The best proof of all this is the historical origin of Russian atheism. We acquired it from the West (not for nothing did it become the first article of the creed of our ‘Westernism’). We accepted it as the latest word of Western civilisation, first in the form of Voltaireanism and the materialism of the French Encyclopaedists, then of atheistic socialism (Belinsky), later of the materialism of the sixties, positivism and Feuerbachian humanism, and most recently of economic materialism and, in the very latest years, criticism. On the many-branched tree of Western civilisation, whose roots reach deep into history, we took a liking to just one branch, neither knowing nor wishing to know all the others, fully convinced that we were grafting upon ourselves the most authentic European civilisation. But European civilisation has not only diverse fruits and numerous branches; it also has roots that nourish the tree and, to a certain extent, neutralise many poisonous fruits with their healthy sap. Thus even negative doctrines, in their homeland, among other mighty spiritual currents that oppose them, have a wholly different psychological and historical significance from that which they possess when they appear in a cultural desert and claim to become the sole foundation of Russian enlightenment and civilisation. Si duo idem dicunt, non est idem. No culture has yet been built on such a foundation.
Si duo idem dicunt, non est idem.
At present it is often forgotten that Western European culture has religious roots, that at least half of it is built upon a religious foundation laid by the Middle Ages and the Reformation. Whatever our attitude towards Reformation dogmatics and Protestantism in general may be, it cannot be denied that the Reformation brought about an enormous religious awakening throughout the Western world, not excluding that part which remained faithful to Catholicism but was likewise compelled to renew itself in order to fight its enemies. In this sense the new personality of European man was born in the Reformation (and this origin left its mark upon it); political liberty, freedom of conscience and the rights of man and citizen were likewise proclaimed by the Reformation (in England). The latest research also elucidates the importance of Protestantism, particularly in the Reformed tradition, Calvinism and Puritanism, for economic development too, through the formation of individuals capable of becoming leaders of the developing national economy. It was also predominantly within Protestantism that modern science, and especially philosophy, developed. And all this development proceeded with strict historical continuity and gradualness, without fissures or collapses. The cultural history of the Western European world forms a single coherent whole, in which both the Middle Ages and the Reformation era remain alive and occupy their necessary place alongside the currents of modern times.
Already in the age of the Reformation there emerged that spiritual channel which was to prove decisive for the Russian intelligentsia. Alongside the Reformation, in the humanistic Renaissance, the revival of classical antiquity, certain traits of paganism were also reborn. Parallel to the religious individualism of the Reformation, neo-pagan individualism grew stronger too, exalting the natural, unregenerate human being. According to this view, man is good and beautiful by nature, a nature distorted only by external conditions: it is enough to restore man’s natural state, and everything will thereby be achieved. Here lies the root of various theories of natural law, as well as of the most recent doctrines of progress and of the omnipotence of external reforms in resolving the human tragedy, and consequently of all modern humanism and socialism. The outward, apparent affinity of religious and pagan individualism does not abolish their profound inner difference, and therefore in modern history we observe not only the parallel development but also the struggle of these two currents. The strengthening of the motifs of humanistic individualism in the history of thought marks the age of the so-called ‘Enlightenment’ (Aufklärung) in the seventeenth, eighteenth and partly nineteenth centuries. The Enlightenment draws the most radical negative conclusions from the premises of humanism: in religion, through deism, it arrives at scepticism and atheism; in philosophy, through rationalism and empiricism, at positivism and materialism; in morality, through ‘natural’ morality, at utilitarianism and hedonism. Materialistic socialism too may be regarded as the latest and ripest fruit of the Enlightenment. This tendency, itself in part a product of the disintegration of the Reformation, is also one of the disintegrating principles in the spiritual life of the West, highly influential in modern history. It inspired the great French Revolution and most nineteenth-century revolutions; on the other hand, it also provides the spiritual foundation for European philistinism, whose dominance has for the time being succeeded the heroic age of the Enlightenment. Yet it is very important not to forget that, although the face of European life is increasingly distorted by the popular philosophy of the Enlightenment spreading widely among the masses and grows rigid in the cold of philistinism, the Enlightenment has never played, and does not play, an exclusive or even dominant role in cultural history: the tree of European culture is still nourished, even invisibly to the eye, by the spiritual sap of old religious roots. It is these roots, this healthy historical conservatism, that sustain the strength of the tree itself, although, insofar as Enlightenment thought penetrates the roots and trunk, it too begins to wither and rot. Western European civilisation therefore cannot be regarded as irreligious in its historical foundation, although it is indeed becoming increasingly so in the consciousness of the latest generations. In its Westernism our intelligentsia has gone no further than the outward assimilation of the latest political and social ideas of the West, accepting them, moreover, in conjunction with the most extreme and drastic forms of Enlightenment philosophy. Western civilisation in its organic entirety is, in essence, not even to blame for this selection made by the intelligentsia itself. From the Russian intellectual’s view of its history, the role of the ‘dark’ Middle Ages disappears altogether, along with the entire Reformation era with its enormous spiritual gains and the whole development of scientific and philosophical thought apart from radical Enlightenment thought. In the beginning there was barbarism, and then civilisation shone forth, that is, Enlightenment, materialism, atheism, socialism: such is the uncomplicated philosophy of history of the average Russian intellectual. Thus, in the struggle for Russian culture, one must struggle, among other things, even for a deeper, historically conscious Westernism.
Why, then, did it come about that our intelligentsia so readily assimilated precisely the dogmas of the Enlightenment? Many historical causes can be cited for this, but to a certain extent this selection was also a free act of the intelligentsia itself, for which it is to that extent responsible before its homeland and history.
At all events, the bond between the ages in Russian enlightenment is thereby broken, and our homeland is spiritually sick with this rupture.
Rejecting Christianity and the norms of life it establishes, together with atheism, or rather in place of atheism, our intelligentsia takes over the dogmas of the religion of man-godhood in one of the variants developed by the Western European Enlightenment. The fundamental dogma common to all its variants is faith in man’s natural perfection, in infinite progress achieved by human powers, and at the same time a mechanical understanding of that progress. Since all evil is explained by the external disorder of human social life, and there is therefore neither personal guilt nor personal responsibility, the whole task of ordering society consists in overcoming these external disorders, naturally by external reforms as well. Denying Providence and any primordial plan being realised in history, man here puts himself in the place of Providence and sees in himself his own saviour. This self-assessment is not impeded even by the plainly contradictory mechanical, sometimes crudely materialistic understanding of the historical process, which reduces it to the activity of elemental forces (as in economic materialism); man nevertheless remains the sole rational, conscious agent, his own providence. In the West, where this disposition arose already in an age of cultural flourishing and of man’s newly felt power, it is psychologically coloured by the cultural self-satisfaction of the newly enriched bourgeois. Although, from a religious standpoint, this self-deification of European philistinism, in socialism and individualism alike, appears as repulsive complacency and spiritual usurpation, a temporary dulling of religious consciousness, in the West this man-godhood, having had its Sturm und Drang, has long since become tame and calm (though no one can say for how long), as has European socialism. At all events, it is as yet powerless to undermine (although with slow relentlessness it does so) the foundations of labour in European culture, the spiritual health of the European peoples. Centuries of tradition and the historical discipline of labour still in practice overcome the disintegrating influence of self-deification. It is otherwise in Russia, where the bond between historical ages has been broken. In Russia the religion of man-godhood and its essence, self-deification, were received not only with youthful ardour but with an adolescent ignorance of life and of one’s own powers, and assumed almost feverish forms. Inspired by it, our intelligentsia felt itself called to play the role of Providence towards its homeland. It was conscious of itself as the sole bearer of light and European education in this country, where everything, it seemed to it, was enveloped in impenetrable darkness, everything was so barbarous and alien to it. It declared itself the country’s spiritual guardian and decided to save it as best it understood and knew how.
Towards Russian history and contemporary life the intelligentsia adopted a position of heroic defiance and heroic struggle, relying upon its own self-assessment. Heroism is the word that expresses, in my opinion, the fundamental essence of the intelligentsia’s worldview and ideal, and specifically the heroism of self-deification. The entire economy of its spiritual forces rests upon this sense of itself.
The intellectual’s isolated position in the country, his severance from the soil, the harsh historical environment, the absence of serious knowledge and historical experience: all this worked the psychology of this heroism into a frenzy. Especially at certain times, the intellectual fell into a state of heroic ecstasy with a distinctly hysterical tinge. Russia must be saved, and its saviour can and must be the intelligentsia in general, and even a particular so-and-so individually; apart from him there is no saviour and no salvation. Nothing confirms the psychology of heroism so strongly as external persecution, oppression, struggle with its vicissitudes, danger and even death. And, as we know, Russian history was unstinting in this: the Russian intelligentsia developed and grew in an atmosphere of continual martyrdom, and one cannot fail to bow before the sanctity of its sufferings. But even reverence before these sufferings, in their immeasurable past and burdensome present, before this ‘cross’, voluntary or involuntary, will not compel silence about what nevertheless remains true, about which one must not remain silent, if only out of reverence for the intelligentsia’s martyrology.
Thus suffering and persecution canonise the hero above all, both in his own eyes and in those of others. And since, owing to the sad peculiarities of Russian life, such a fate often overtakes him while he is still young, this self-consciousness too appears early, and his subsequent life then becomes merely a consistent development in the chosen direction. In literature and in personal observation anyone will readily find many examples of how, on the one hand, the police regime cripples people and deprives them of the opportunity for useful work, and how, on the other, it fosters a particular spiritual aristocratism, a kind of patented heroism, in its victims. It is bitter to think how much of the reflected influence of the police regime is present in the psychology of Russian intelligentsia heroism, how great this influence was not only upon people’s outward destinies but also upon their souls, upon their worldview. At all events, the influences of the Western Enlightenment, of the religion of man-godhood and self-deification, found in Russian conditions of life an unexpected but powerful ally. If a young intellectual, say a male university student or a female student on higher courses, still doubts whether he has matured sufficiently for the historical mission of saviour of the fatherland, recognition of this maturity by the Ministry of Internal Affairs usually removes even these last doubts. In terms of the inner work it requires, the transformation of a Russian youth or yesterday’s ordinary citizen into a heroic type is an uncomplicated, mostly brief process of assimilating certain dogmas of the religion of man-godhood and the quasi-scientific ‘programme’ of some party, followed by a corresponding alteration in his sense of himself, after which the heroic buskins grow of their own accord. In its further development, suffering, bitterness caused by the cruelty of the authorities, grievous sacrifices and losses complete the formation of this type, which may then possess anything at all except doubts about its mission.
The heroic intellectual is therefore not content with the role of a modest worker, even if he is compelled to confine himself to it; his dream is to be the saviour of humanity or, at least, of the Russian people. What he requires, in his dreams of course, is not a secured minimum but a heroic maximum. Maximalism is an inseparable trait of intelligentsia heroism, revealed with such astonishing clarity in the time of the Russian revolution. It is not a characteristic of any one party: no, it is the very soul of heroism, for the hero in general will not settle for little. Even if he sees no possibility of achieving this maximum now, and never will see one, his thoughts are occupied only with it. He makes a historical leap in his imagination and, taking little interest in the path he has leapt over, fixes his gaze only upon the bright point at the very edge of the historical horizon. Such maximalism bears the signs of possession by an idea, of self-hypnosis; it fetters thought and breeds a fanaticism deaf to the voice of life. This also answers the historical question of why the most extreme tendencies triumphed in the revolution, while the immediate tasks of the moment were defined in more and more maximal terms, right up to the establishment of a social republic or anarchy. Moreover, these more extreme and plainly mad tendencies became ever stronger and more influential and, amid the general leftward movement of our cowardly and passive society, which readily submits to force, pushed aside everything more moderate (it is enough to recall the ‘Left Bloc’s’ hatred of the ‘Kadets’).
Each hero has his own way of saving humanity and must devise his own programme for it. Usually one of the programmes of the existing political parties or factions is adopted as such; though not differing in their aims, usually founded on the ideals of materialistic socialism or, more recently, anarchism as well, they differ in their paths and means. It would be wrong to suppose that these political party programmes psychologically correspond to what they represent for most parliamentary parties in the Western European world. They are something far greater: a religious credo, the surest possible way of saving humanity, an intellectual monolith that can only be accepted or rejected. In the name of faith in the programme, the best representatives of the intelligentsia sacrifice life, health, liberty and happiness. Although these programmes are usually also declared ‘scientific’, which increases their enchantment, it is better not even to speak of the extent of their actual ‘scientific’ character; and, in any case, their most ardent adherents may, by the level of their development and education, be poor judges in this matter.
Although all feel themselves heroes, equally called to be providence and saviours, they do not agree on the methods and paths of this salvation. And since disagreements over programmes actually touch the innermost strings of the soul, party dissensions become wholly ineradicable. The intelligentsia, afflicted with ‘Jacobinism’, aspiring to the ‘seizure of power’, to ‘dictatorship’ in the name of saving the people, inevitably breaks up and scatters into mutually hostile factions, and this is felt all the more keenly as the temperature of heroism rises. Intolerance and mutual strife are such familiar traits of our party intelligentsia that mere mention of them suffices. Something like self-poisoning occurs in the intelligentsia’s movement. It follows from the very essence of heroism that it presupposes a passive object to be acted upon, the people or humanity being saved, whereas the hero, individual or collective, is always conceived only in the singular. If, however, there turn out to be several heroes and heroic means, rivalry and discord are inevitable, for several ‘dictatorships’ at once are impossible. Heroism as a widespread attitude towards the world is a principle that divides rather than gathers together; it creates rivals, not fellow workers.
Our intelligentsia, almost every member of which aspires to collectivism, to the greatest possible communal unity of human existence, is in its disposition something anti-communal, anti-collectivist, for it carries within itself the divisive principle of heroic self-assertion. The hero is to a certain extent a superman, adopting towards his neighbours the proud and defiant pose of a saviour; and for all its striving towards democracy, the intelligentsia is merely a particular variety of estate-based aristocratism, arrogantly setting itself against ‘ordinary citizens’. Anyone who has lived in intelligentsia circles knows well this arrogance and conceit, the consciousness of one’s own infallibility and contempt for those who think differently, and that abstract dogmatism into which every doctrine is cast here.
Owing to its maximalism, the intelligentsia remains largely inaccessible both to the arguments of historical realism and to those of scientific knowledge. Socialism itself remains for it not a collective concept denoting a gradual socio-economic transformation made up of a series of particular and entirely concrete reforms, not a ‘historical movement’, but a supra-historical ‘final goal’ (in the terminology of the well-known dispute with Bernstein), towards which a historical leap must be made through an act of intelligentsia heroism. Hence the lack of a sense of historical reality and the geometrical straightness of judgements and assessments, their notorious ‘adherence to principle’. It seems that no expression flies so often from the intellectual’s lips as this: he judges everything first and foremost ‘as a matter of principle’, which in reality means abstractly, without entering into the complexity of reality and thereby often freeing himself from the difficulty of properly assessing the situation. Anyone who has had to deal with intellectuals at work knows how costly this ‘principled’ impracticality of the intelligentsia is, sometimes leading to straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel.
This same maximalism constitutes the greatest obstacle to raising the intelligentsia’s level of education precisely in those questions it regards as its speciality: social and political questions. For if one persuades oneself that the goal and the manner of advance have already been established, and ‘scientifically’ at that, then interest in studying the intermediate, nearest links naturally weakens. Consciously or unconsciously, the intelligentsia lives in an atmosphere of expectation of a social miracle, a universal cataclysm, in a ‘chiliastic’ state of mind.
Heroism strives to save humanity by its own powers and, moreover, by external means; hence its exceptional valuation of heroic deeds that embody the programme of maximalism to the utmost. One must move something, accomplish something beyond one’s powers, giving up in doing so what is dearest, one’s life: such is the commandment of heroism. One can become a hero, and at the same time humanity’s saviour, through a heroic deed going far beyond the limits of everyday duty. This dream, which lives in the intellectual’s soul although realisable only by a few, serves as a general standard in judgements, a criterion for assessments of life. To accomplish such a deed is both extraordinarily difficult, since it requires overcoming the strongest instincts of attachment to life and fear, and extraordinarily simple, since it requires an effort of will for a comparatively short period, while its assumed or expected results are considered so great. Sometimes the desire to depart from life through unfitness for it, through inability to bear its burden, merges indistinguishably with heroic self-renunciation, so that one involuntarily asks oneself: is this heroism or suicide? Of course, the intelligentsia’s calendar of saints can name many heroes who made their whole life an endeavour of suffering and prolonged exertion of will; nevertheless, despite the differences that depend on the strength of individual personalities, the general tone here remains the same.
Evidently such an attitude towards the world is far better adapted to the storms of history than to its calms, which oppress heroes. The greatest opportunity for heroic deeds, an irrational ‘elevation of spirits’, exaltation, intoxication with struggle that creates an atmosphere of a certain heroic adventurism: all this is heroism’s native element. That is why revolutionary romanticism, the intelligentsia’s notorious ‘revolutionary spirit’, is so powerful among us. One must not forget that the concept of revolution is negative: it has no independent content, but is characterised only by the negation of what it destroys; the pathos of revolution is therefore hatred and destruction. Yet one of the greatest Russian intellectuals, Bakunin, had already formulated the thought that the destroying spirit is at the same time a creating spirit, and this faith is the fundamental nerve of the psychology of heroism. It simplifies the task of historical construction, for on such an understanding what it requires above all is strong muscles and nerves, temperament and courage; and, surveying the chronicle of the Russian revolution, one recalls this simplified understanding more than once...
The psychology of intelligentsia heroism is most impressed by those social groups and external situations in which it is most natural in all the consistency of its straight-line maximalism. Among us, young people in education present the most favourable combination of these conditions. Owing to youth with its physiology and psychology, to a lack of life experience and scientific knowledge replaced by ardour and self-confidence, and to the privilege of their social position, which does not, however, reach the bourgeois exclusiveness of Western students, our young people express the type of heroic maximalism most fully. And whereas in Christianity spiritual eldership is the natural embodiment of spiritual experience and guidance, among our intelligentsia this role has naturally been taken by the student youth. Spiritual paedocracy is the greatest evil of our society, and at the same time a symptomatic manifestation of intelligentsia heroism and its fundamental traits, but in an accentuated and exaggerated form. This grotesque relationship, in which the assessments and opinions of ‘student youth’ become authoritative for the elders, turns the natural order of things upside down and is equally ruinous to both. Historically, this spiritual hegemony is connected with the genuinely pioneering role that student youth, with its impulses, has played in Russian history; psychologically, it is explained by the spiritual disposition of the intelligentsia, which in its most tenacious and vivid representatives remains the same student youth in its worldview all its life. Hence that deeply deplorable and habitual indifference and, far worse, tacit or even open approval with which people among us look on as our young people, without knowledge or experience but charged with intelligentsia heroism, undertake serious social experiments dangerous in their consequences and, of course, through this activity only strengthen reaction. The very young age of the members of groups with the most maximalist actions and programmes has hardly attracted sufficient attention or been adequately assessed. And, far worse, many consider it perfectly in the order of things. ‘Student’ became a common designation for the intellectual in the days of the revolution.
Every age has its advantages, and youth has especially many, with the powers latent in it. Whoever cares for the future is most concerned about the younger generation. But to be spiritually dependent upon it, to curry favour with it, to listen attentively to its opinion and take it as one’s criterion, testifies to society’s spiritual weakness. At all events, it remains the signature of an entire historical period and of the whole disposition of soul of intelligentsia heroism that the ideal of the Christian saint, the ascetic striver, was here replaced by the figure of the revolutionary student.
With maximalism of ends is bound up maximalism of means, so deplorably manifested in recent years. In this indiscriminateness of means, this heroic ‘everything is permitted’ (foreshadowed by Dostoevsky already in Crime and Punishment and Demons), the man-god nature of intelligentsia heroism reveals itself to the greatest degree: its inherent self-deification, its putting itself in the place of God, in the place of Providence, and this not only in its goals and plans but also in the ways and means of their realisation. I am realising my idea and for its sake free myself from the bonds of ordinary morality; I permit myself a right not only over others’ property but also over their life and death, if this is necessary for my idea. In every maximalist there sits such a little Napoleon of socialism or anarchism. Amoralism, or, in the old expression, nihilism, is a necessary consequence of self-deification; here the danger of self-disintegration lies in wait for it, and inevitable failure awaits it. And those bitter disappointments many experienced in the revolution, that indelible picture of wilfulness, expropriation and mass terror, were all no accident but the unfolding of those spiritual potentialities necessarily concealed in the psychology of self-deification.
In reality the upsurge of heroism is accessible only to select natures, and only at exceptional moments of history, whereas life is made up of everyday existence, and the intelligentsia does not consist solely of heroic natures. Without actual heroic action or the possibility of manifesting it, heroism turns into pretension, into a defiant pose; a peculiar spirit develops of heroic hypocrisy and irresponsible fault-finding, of perpetual ‘principled’ opposition, an exaggerated sense of one’s rights and a weakened consciousness of duties and of personal responsibility generally. The most ordinary philistine, who is in no way above and is sometimes below his surroundings, upon putting on the intellectual’s uniform already begins to treat them with arrogance. This evil is especially palpable in provincial life among us. Self-deification on credit, which does not always make a hero, is capable of fostering pretentiousness. Deprived of absolute norms and unshakeable principles of personal and social conduct, man replaces them with wilfulness and makeshift rules of his own. Nihilism is therefore a terrible scourge, a dreadful spiritual ulcer eating away at our society. The heroic ‘everything is permitted’ is imperceptibly replaced by simple lack of principle in everything concerning personal life and personal conduct, the substance of everyday living. This is one of the important reasons why, with such an abundance of heroes, we have so few simply decent, disciplined people capable of work, and why the very heroic youth by whose course the older generation steers itself turns so imperceptibly and easily in life either into ‘superfluous men’ or into types from Chekhov and Gogol, and ends with wine and cards, if nothing worse. Pushkin, with the truthfulness of genius, lifts the veil over the possible future of Lensky, who died tragically and untimely, and discerns behind it a very prosaic picture. Try mentally to do the same with some youth surrounded by a hero’s halo, and picture him simply in the role of a worker after the affectation of heroism has died away, leaving in the soul the emptiness of nihilism. Not for nothing did Nekrasov, the intelligentsia’s poet, author of ‘A Knight for an Hour’, feel so strongly that early death is the finest apotheosis of intelligentsia heroism.
Do not sob so wildly over him:
It is good to die young!
Merciless vulgarity had not had time
To cast even a shadow upon him, and so on.
This same heroic affectation, superficial and unstable, explains the astonishing instability of the intelligentsia’s tastes, beliefs and moods, changing at fashion’s whim. Many now stand astonished at the change of mood that has occurred in recent years, from the heroically revolutionary to the nihilistic and pornographic, and also at this epidemic of suicides, which it is wrong to explain solely by political reaction and the grievous impressions of Russian life.
Yet this alternation and its hysterical character appear natural to the intelligentsia, and it itself has not changed in its essence, which has only revealed itself more fully in this change from the historical festival to everyday life; false heroism does not go unpunished. The spiritual condition of the intelligentsia cannot fail to arouse serious anxiety. And the greatest anxiety is aroused by the young, rising generation, and especially the fate of the intelligentsia’s children. Lacking an established way of life, torn away from an organic pattern of living and possessing no firm foundations of its own, the intelligentsia, with its atheism, straight-line rationalism and general laxity and lack of principle in everyday life, passes these qualities on to its children too, with the sole difference that our children, even in childhood, remain deprived of the healthy sap their parents received from the life of the people.
Extremely unpopular among the intelligentsia are the notions of personal morality, personal self-improvement and the formation of personality (whereas, conversely, the word social has a special, sacramental character). Although the intelligentsia’s attitude towards the world represents an extreme self-assertion of the personality, its self-deification, in its theories the intelligentsia mercilessly persecutes this very personality, most often reducing it without remainder to the influences of environment and the elemental forces of history, in accordance with the general doctrine of the Enlightenment. The intelligentsia is unwilling to admit that the personality contains living creative energy, and remains deaf to everything that approaches this problem: deaf not only to Christian teaching but even to Tolstoy’s teaching, which nevertheless contains a healthy kernel of personal inward deepening, and to all philosophical doctrines that compel one to take account of personality.
Yet its chief weakness lies in the absence of a correct doctrine of personality. The distortion of personality, the falsity of the very ideal for its development, is the root cause from which flow the weaknesses and defects of our intelligentsia, its historical inadequacy. The intelligentsia needs to straighten itself not from without but from within, and only it itself can do this, through a free spiritual endeavour, invisible but entirely real.
The distinctive nature of intelligentsia heroism becomes clearer to us if we compare it with its opposite spiritual countenance, that of Christian heroism or, more precisely, Christian ascetic striving, for the hero in Christianity is an ascetic striver. The fundamental difference here is not so much outward as inward, religious.
The hero who puts himself in the role of Providence, through this spiritual usurpation, attributes to himself both greater responsibility than he can bear and greater tasks than are within human reach. The Christian ascetic striver believes in God the Provider, without whom not a hair falls from the head. In his eyes history and an individual human life appear as the realisation of God’s ordering, although incomprehensible to him in its individual details, before which he humbles himself through an endeavour of faith. He is thereby freed at once from the heroic pose and its pretensions. His attention is concentrated upon his immediate work, his actual duties and their strict, unswerving observance. Of course, both determining and fulfilling these duties sometimes require no less breadth of outlook and knowledge than that to which intelligentsia heroism lays claim. Here, however, attention is concentrated upon the consciousness of personal duty and its fulfilment, upon self-control; and this shifting of the centre of attention to oneself and one’s duties, this release from the false self-perception of an uncalled saviour of the world and from the pride inevitably bound up with it, restores the soul’s health, filling it with a feeling of healthy Christian humility. It was to this spiritual self-renunciation, to the sacrifice of one’s proud intellectual ‘I’ in the name of a higher sanctity, that Dostoevsky called the Russian intelligentsia in his Pushkin speech: ‘Humble yourself, proud man, and above all break your pride... Conquer yourself, and you will subdue yourself, and begin a great work and make others free, and you will behold happiness, for your life will be filled...’
There is no word more unpopular among the intelligentsia than humility; few concepts have been subjected to greater misunderstanding and distortion, or offered such an easy whetstone for the teeth of intelligentsia demagogy; and this perhaps testifies better than anything else to the spiritual nature of the intelligentsia, exposing its proud heroism resting upon self-deification. At the same time, according to the unanimous testimony of the Church, humility is the first and fundamental Christian virtue; but even outside Christianity it is a very valuable quality, testifying, at any rate, to a high level of spiritual development. It is easy even for an intellectual to understand that a true scholar, for example, as his knowledge deepens and expands, only feels more keenly the abyss of his ignorance, so that advances in knowledge are accompanied for him by an increasing understanding of his ignorance, by a growth of intellectual humility, as the biographers of great scholars confirm. And conversely, self-confident complacency or the hope of attaining complete, satisfying knowledge by one’s own powers is a sure and unfailing symptom of scholarly immaturity or simply of youth.
