The same feeling of profound dissatisfaction with one’s creative work, of its failure to accord with the ideals of beauty and the tasks of art, also distinguishes the true artist, for whom his work inevitably becomes a torment, although in it alone he finds his life. Without this feeling of perpetual dissatisfaction with one’s creations, which may be called humility before beauty, there is no true artist.
The same feeling of the limitation of individual powers in the face of expanding tasks overtakes the philosophical thinker, the statesman, the social politician, and so on.
But if the naturalness and necessity of humility are comparatively easy to understand in these particular fields of human activity, why does this prove so difficult in relation to the central sphere of spiritual life, namely moral and religious self-scrutiny? Here the decisive significance of one or another supreme criterion, an ideal for the personality, reveals itself: is this criterion of self-scrutiny supplied by the image of the perfect divine personality incarnate in Christ, or by self-deified man in one or another of his limited earthly forms (humanity, the people, the proletariat, the superman), that is, ultimately by one’s own ‘I’, but standing before itself in a heroic pose? The ascetic striver’s increasingly discerning spiritual vision discovers ever new imperfections in limited man, distorted by sin and passions, and above all in himself; the sense of distance from the ideal increases. In other words, the moral development of personality is accompanied by an increasing consciousness of one’s imperfections, or, what amounts to the same thing, is expressed in humility before God and in ‘walking before God’, as is constantly explained in ecclesiastical and patristic literature. And this difference between heroic and Christian self-assessment penetrates every winding of the soul, its entire sense of itself.
Because of the absence of an ideal of personality, or, more precisely, its distortion, everything concerning the religious cultivation of personality, its formation and discipline, inevitably remains in complete neglect among the intelligentsia. It lacks those absolute norms and values which are necessary for this cultivation and are given only in religion. And above all it lacks the concept of sin and the sense of sin, to such an extent that the word sin sounds almost as wild and alien to the intellectual’s ear as humility does. The whole power of sin, its agonising weight, the comprehensiveness and depth of its influence upon all human life, in a word, the whole tragedy of man’s sinful condition, from which only Golgotha could provide a way out in God’s eternal plan: all this remains outside the field of consciousness of the intelligentsia, which is as though in religious childhood, not above sin but below awareness of it. Together with Rousseau and the whole Enlightenment, it has come to believe that natural man is good by his nature and that the doctrine of original sin and the fundamental corruption of human nature is a superstitious myth with nothing corresponding to it in moral experience. Thus no special concern for the cultivation of personality, for such despised ‘self-improvement’, can or should exist at all; all energy must be spent entirely on the struggle to improve the environment. Declaring personality wholly a product of that environment, they propose that this very personality should also improve the environment, like Baron Münchhausen pulling himself out of the swamp by his hair.
This absence of a sense of sin and of even a certain fear before it explains many traits of the intelligentsia’s disposition of soul and way of life, and, alas, many sad aspects and events of our revolution, as well as the spiritual decrepitude that followed it. Our intelligentsia has fed and continues to feed itself on many piquant dishes from the table of Western civilisation, thoroughly upsetting its already damaged stomach; is it not time to remember simple, coarse, but unquestionably wholesome and nourishing food, the old Mosaic Ten Commandments, and then to go on to the New Testament too!...
Heroic maximalism is projected wholly outwards, into the achievement of external goals; in relation to personal life, outside the heroic act and everything connected with it, it proves to be minimalism, that is, it simply leaves personal life outside its attention. Hence its unfitness to form a stable, disciplined personality capable of work, standing on its own feet rather than upon a wave of public hysteria that is subsequently replaced by decline. The entire type of the intelligentsia is determined by this combination of minimalism and maximalism, in which maximal claims may be advanced with minimal preparation of the personality, both in learning and in life experience and self-discipline; this is expressed so strikingly in the unnatural hegemony of student youth, in our spiritual paedocracy.
Christian ascetic striving perceives the world differently. In complete opposition to the pride of intelligentsia heroism, Christian ascetic striving is above all maximalism in personal life, in the demands made upon oneself; conversely, the sharpness of external maximalism is considerably softened here. The Christian hero, or ascetic striver (in our admittedly somewhat conventional terminology), does not set himself the tasks of Providence and consequently does not tie the destinies of history and humanity to his own or indeed anyone else’s individual effort; in his activity he sees above all the fulfilment of his duty before God, of God’s commandment addressed to him. He is obliged to fulfil it as completely as possible, and likewise to show all possible energy and selflessness in seeking out what constitutes his work and duty; in a certain sense he too must strive for maximalism of action, but in an altogether different sense. One of the most common misunderstandings concerning humility, put forward, incidentally, not only bona but also mala fide, consists in invariably interpreting Christian humility, the inward and invisible endeavour of struggle against self-centredness, wilfulness and self-deification, as outward passivity, as reconciliation with evil, as inaction and even servility, or as non-doing in an external sense, while Christian ascetic striving is confused with one of its many forms, albeit a very important one, namely monasticism. But ascetic striving as the inner ordering of personality is compatible with every kind of external activity insofar as it does not contradict its principles.
People are particularly fond of opposing Christian humility to a ‘revolutionary’ disposition. Without entering into this question in detail, I shall point out that revolution, that is, certain political actions, does not in itself yet decide the question of the spirit and ideals inspiring it. Dmitry Donskoy’s campaign against the Tatars with the blessing of the Venerable Sergius is a revolutionary action in the political sense, as a revolt against the lawful government; yet at the same time, it seems to me, in the souls of its participants it was an act of Christian ascetic striving, inseparably bound up with the endeavour of humility. Conversely, the modern revolution, being founded upon atheism, is in its spirit very far not only from Christian humility but from Christianity altogether. In a similar way there is an enormous spiritual difference between the Puritan English revolution and the atheistic French one, as between Cromwell and Marat or Robespierre, between Ryleyev or the believers among the Decembrists generally and the later figures of the revolution.
In fact, given appropriate historical circumstances, particular deeds called heroic are of course entirely compatible with the psychology of Christian ascetic striving; but they are performed not in one’s own name but in God’s name, not heroically but in a spirit of ascetic striving, and even with an outward resemblance to heroism their religious psychology nevertheless remains distinct from it. ‘The kingdom of heaven is taken by force, and those who make an effort seize it’ (Matt. 11,12): ‘effort’ is required of everyone, the utmost exertion of their powers to accomplish good; but even such an effort does not yet give one the right to a heroic sense of oneself, to spiritual pride, for it is only the fulfilment of duty: ‘When you have fulfilled everything commanded you, say: we are servants worth nothing, because we have done what we ought to have done’ (Luke 17,10).
Christian ascetic striving is continual self-control, a struggle with the lower, sinful aspects of one’s ‘I’, an ascetic discipline of the spirit. Whereas heroism is characterised by outbursts and the quest for great deeds, here, conversely, the norm is an even course, ‘measure’, restraint, unrelenting self-discipline, patience and endurance, precisely the qualities absent from the intelligentsia. Faithful fulfilment of one’s duty, each person’s bearing of their own cross, having denied themselves, not only in an outward sense but still more in an inward one, leaving everything else to Providence: these are the traits of true ascetic striving. Monastic life has a beautiful expression for this religious and practical idea: obedience. This is the name given to any occupation assigned to a monk, whether scholarly labour or the coarsest physical work, provided it is performed in the name of religious duty. This concept can also be extended beyond the monastery and applied to any work whatsoever. The doctor and the engineer, the professor and the politician, the factory owner and his worker may equally, in fulfilling their duties, be guided not by personal interest, whether spiritual or material makes no difference, but by conscience and the dictates of duty, and undertake an obedience. This discipline of obedience, ‘secular asceticism’ (in the German expression, ‘innerweltliche Askese’), also had an enormous influence on the formation of personality in Western Europe in various fields of labour, and this formation can still be felt today.
The reverse side of intelligentsia maximalism is historical impatience, a lack of historical sobriety, the desire to bring about a social miracle, a practical denial of the evolutionism professed in theory. Conversely, the discipline of ‘obedience’ should help cultivate historical sobriety, self-possession and restraint; it teaches one to bear the historical burden, the yoke of historical obedience; it fosters rootedness in the soil, a sense of connection with the past and gratitude towards that past, which is now so readily forgotten for the sake of the future, and restores the moral bond between children and fathers.
Conversely, humanistic progress is contempt for the fathers, revulsion from one’s own past and its total condemnation, historical and even simply personal ingratitude, the legitimisation of spiritual strife between fathers and children. The hero makes history according to his own plan; he as it were begins history from himself, regarding what exists as material or a passive object to be acted upon. The rupture of the historical bond in feeling and will thereby becomes inevitable.
The parallel we have drawn permits a general conclusion concerning the relationship between intelligentsia heroism and Christian ascetic striving. Despite a certain outward resemblance, there is no inner kinship between them, no point of contact even in a subordinate respect. The task of heroism is the external salvation of humanity, more precisely its future portion, by one’s own powers, according to one’s own plan, ‘in one’s own name’; the hero is the one who realises his idea to the greatest degree, even if he wrecks life for its sake: this is the man-god. The task of Christian ascetic striving is to turn one’s life into invisible self-renunciation, obedience, to perform one’s labour with all exertion, self-discipline and self-possession, but to see in it and in oneself only an instrument of Providence. The Christian saint is the one who has, to the greatest extent, through a continual and unrelenting endeavour, transformed his personal will and his whole empirical personality so that they are penetrated as fully as possible by the will of God. The image of the fullness of this penetration is the God-man, who came ‘to do not His own will but that of the Father who sent Him’ and who ‘comes in the name of the Lord’.
The difference between Christianity, at least in its ethical teaching, and intelligentsia heroism, which historically borrowed from Christianity some of its most fundamental dogmas, above all the idea of the equal worth of human beings, of the absolute dignity of the human personality, of equality and fraternity, is now generally more likely to be understated than overstated. This was furthered above all by the intelligentsia’s failure to understand the entire real gulf between atheism and Christianity, as a result of which the image of Christ has more than once been ‘corrected’ with the usual self-confidence, freeing it from ‘ecclesiastical distortions’ and portraying Him as a Social Democrat or Socialist Revolutionary. The father of the Russian intelligentsia, Belinsky, had already set an example of this. This tasteless operation, intolerable to religious feeling, has been performed more than once. The intelligentsia itself, however, takes no interest whatever in this rapprochement as such, resorting to it predominantly for political purposes or for the convenience of ‘agitation’.
Far subtler and more seductive is another, no less blasphemous falsehood, which has begun to recur in various forms especially often of late: namely, the assertion that the intelligentsia’s maximalism and revolutionary spirit, whose spiritual basis, as we have seen, is atheism, differ in essence from Christianity only in their lack of religious self-awareness. Supposedly it is enough to replace the name of Marx or Mikhailovsky with that of Christ, and Capital with the Gospel or, better still, the Apocalypse, because of its convenience for quotation; or one need not change anything at all, but merely intensify the intelligentsia’s revolutionary spirit further and prolong its revolution, and then a ‘new religious consciousness’ will be born of it, as though history had not already offered an example of a sufficiently prolonged intelligentsia revolution revealing all its spiritual potentialities, namely the great French Revolution. If before the revolution it was still easy to confuse a suffering, persecuted intellectual, bearing on his shoulders the heroic struggle against bureaucratic absolutism, with a Christian martyr, after the intelligentsia’s spiritual self-exposure during the revolution this became much more difficult.
At present one can also observe an intelligentsia counterfeit of Christianity particularly characteristic of our age: the adoption of Christian words and ideas while preserving the entire spiritual countenance of intelligentsia heroism. Each of us Christians who come from the intelligentsia discovers this cast of soul deep within himself. Intelligentsia heroism, having changed into Christian clothing and sincerely mistaking its own intellectual experiences and habitual heroic pathos for Christian righteous anger, finds its easiest expression in ecclesiastical revolutionism, in opposing its new holiness, its new religious consciousness, to the untruth of the ‘historical’ Church; it most readily feels itself a Martin Luther or, more than that, a prophetic bearer of a new religious consciousness, called not only to renew Church life but to create new forms of it, almost a new religion. Likewise, in the sphere of secular politics, the most ordinary intelligentsia maximalism, which forms the substance of revolutionary programmes, is simply seasoned with Christian terminology or texts and offered as true Christianity in politics. This intelligentsia Christianity, leaving untouched what is most anti-religious in intelligentsia heroism, namely its disposition of soul, is a compromise between opposing principles, possessing a temporary and transitional significance and no independent vitality. It is unnecessary to genuine intelligentsia heroism and impossible for Christianity. Christianity is jealous, like every religion, indeed; it is strong within a person only when it takes that person wholly, their entire soul, heart and will. And there is no reason to obscure or soften this contrast.
Just as between the martyrs of early Christianity and those of the revolution there is essentially no inner resemblance despite the entire outward identity of their feat, so too between intelligentsia heroism and Christian ascetic striving, even where their manifestations resemble one another outwardly, which can in any case be admitted only partly and conditionally, there remains a gulf, and one cannot stand on both sides of it simultaneously. One must die for the other to be born, and in proportion as the one dies, the other grows and strengthens. Such is the true relationship between the two attitudes towards the world. One must ‘repent’, that is, review, rethink and condemn one’s former life of the soul in its depths and windings, in order to be reborn to a new life. That is why the first word of Gospel preaching is a call to repentance founded upon self-knowledge and self-assessment. ‘Repent (μετανοεῖτε), for the kingdom of heaven has drawn near’ (Matt. 3,1–21; 4,17; Mark 1,14–15). A new soul must be born, a new inner human being, who will grow, develop and strengthen in the endeavour of life. What is at issue is not a change of political or party programmes, outside which the intelligentsia does not usually even conceive of renewal; it is not about programmes at all, but about something far greater, about the human personality itself, not about activity but about the person acting. This rebirth takes place invisibly in the human soul; but if invisible agents prove the strongest even in the physical world, then in the moral world too their power cannot be denied merely because it is not provided for in particular clauses of programmes.
Before the Russian intelligentsia lies a slow and difficult path of re-educating the personality, on which there are no leaps, no cataclysms, and only persistent self-discipline prevails. Russia needs new people of action in every field of life: in the state, to carry out ‘reforms’; in the economy, to raise the national economy; in culture, to work for Russian enlightenment; in the Church, to strengthen the teaching Church, its clergy and hierarchy. New people, if Russia lives to see them, will of course seek new practical paths for their service beyond the existing programmes, and, I believe, those paths will open to their self-affirming quest.
In its attitude towards the people, service to whom the intelligentsia sets itself as its task, it constantly and inevitably oscillates between two extremes: worship of the people and spiritual aristocratism. The need to worship the people in one form or another, whether as the old populism originating with Herzen and founded on faith in the socialist spirit of the Russian people, or in its latest, Marxist form, in which the same qualities are attributed not to the whole people but to one part of it, namely ‘the proletariat’, flows from one of the very foundations of the intelligentsia’s faith. But from that same faith there necessarily flows its opposite too: an arrogant attitude towards the people as an object of saving intervention, as a minor requiring a nursemaid to educate it into ‘consciousness’, unenlightened in the intelligentsia’s sense of the word.
Our literature has repeatedly pointed out the severance of our intelligentsia from the people. In Dostoevsky’s opinion, it was prophetically foreshadowed already by Pushkin, first in the figure of the eternal wanderer Aleko and then in Eugene Onegin, who opened an entire series of ‘superfluous men’. And indeed, a sense of rootedness in the soil, of a historical bond of blood, sympathetic interest, love for one’s own history and aesthetic appreciation of it, is astonishingly scarce in the intelligentsia; two colours predominate on its palette, black for the past and pink for the future. By contrast, the spiritual greatness and keenness of vision of our great writers stand out all the more clearly: descending into the depths of Russian history, they brought out of them Boris Godunov, The Song of the Merchant Kalashnikov and War and Peace. History most often serves as material for applying the creative schemes prevailing in people’s minds at a given time, for example the theory of class struggle, or else for purposes of polemical journalism and agitation.
The cosmopolitanism of the Russian intelligentsia is likewise well known. Brought up on the abstract schemes of the Enlightenment, the intellectual most naturally adopts the pose of the Marquis of Posa, feels himself a Weltbürger, and this cosmopolitanism of emptiness, this absence of a healthy national feeling which also hinders the formation of national self-consciousness, is connected with the intelligentsia’s estrangement from the people.
The intelligentsia has not yet thought through the national problem, which occupied only the minds of the Slavophiles, contenting itself with ‘natural’ explanations of the origin of nationality, from Chernyshevsky, who diligently destroyed the independent significance of the national problem, to the modern Marxists, who dissolve it without remainder into the class struggle.
The national idea rests not only upon ethnographic and historical foundations but above all upon religious and cultural ones; it is founded upon a religious and cultural messianism into which every conscious national feeling necessarily takes shape. So it was with the greatest bearer of the religious-messianic idea, ancient Israel; so it remains with every great historical people. The striving for national autonomy, for the preservation and defence of nationality, is only the negative expression of this idea, possessing value only in connection with its implied positive content. This was precisely how the greatest spokesmen of our national self-consciousness, Dostoevsky, the Slavophiles and Vl. Solovyov, understood the national idea, linking it with the worldwide tasks of the Russian Church or Russian culture. Such an understanding of the national idea should by no means lead to nationalist exclusiveness; on the contrary, it alone gives a positive foundation to the idea of the brotherhood of peoples, rather than of nationless, atomised ‘citizens’ or ‘proletarians of all countries’ renouncing their homeland. The idea of nationality understood in this way is one of the necessary positive conditions of the progress of civilisation. Through its cosmopolitanism our intelligentsia of course sheds many difficulties that inevitably arise in the practical working out of national questions; but this is purchased at the heavy price of the deadening of an entire side of the soul, moreover the side directly turned towards the people. That, among other things, is why this cosmopolitanism is so readily exploited by representatives of militant, chauvinistic nationalism, who thereby find themselves possessing a monopoly of patriotism.
But even this does not dig the deepest gulf between the intelligentsia and the people, since it is still only a derivative difference; the fundamental difference remains the attitude towards religion. The people’s worldview and spiritual disposition are determined by the Christian faith. However great the distance here between ideal and reality, however ignorant and unenlightened our people may be, its ideal is Christ and His teaching, and its norm is Christian ascetic striving. What was the whole history of our people if not ascetic striving, with the Tatar domination that oppressed it first and then Muscovite and Petersburg statehood, with this centuries-long historical burden, this standing guard over Western civilisation against both savage peoples and the sands of Asia, in this cruel climate, with unending famines, cold and suffering? If our people could endure all this and preserve its strength of soul, emerge alive though crippled, it was only because it had a source of spiritual strength in its faith and in the ideals of Christian ascetic striving, which constitute the foundation of its national health and vitality.
Like the icon lamps glowing in monastic houses, to which for centuries the people flocked seeking moral support and instruction, these ideals, this light of Christ, shone for Rus’; and insofar as it possesses this light, our people, I say this without reserve, is, for all its illiteracy, more enlightened than its intelligentsia. Yet precisely at this central point, in everything concerning the people’s faith, the intelligentsia has shown and continues to show complete incomprehension and even contempt.
Thus the meeting of the intelligentsia and the people is above all a collision of two faiths, two religions; and the intelligentsia’s influence is expressed first and foremost in its destruction of the people’s religion, which also disintegrates the people’s soul, dislodging it from the centuries-old foundations hitherto unshakeable. But what does it give in return? How does it itself understand the tasks of popular enlightenment? It understands them in the Enlightenment manner, that is, above all as the development of the mind and enrichment with knowledge. Yet for lack of time, opportunity and, more importantly, education among the enlighteners themselves, this task is replaced by a dogmatic exposition of the doctrines prevailing at a given time in a given party, all of it, of course, under the label of the strictest scientific rigour, or by the communication of scattered bits of knowledge from different fields. Here the full force of our general lack of culture makes itself felt, the shortage of schools and teaching materials and, above all, the absence of simple literacy. At all events, the task of enlightenment in the intelligentsia’s sense is placed before elementary instruction, that is, the communication of elementary knowledge or simply literacy. For the intelligentsia’s enlighteners these tasks are inseparably connected with political and party tasks, for which superficial enlightenment is only a necessary means.
We have all already seen how the people’s soul shuddered after being inoculated with a considerable dose of enlightenment in the sense indicated, how deplorable its reaction to this spiritual devastation was, in the form of rising crime, at first under an ideological pretext and then without even that pretext. The intelligentsia is mistaken in thinking that Russian enlightenment and Russian culture could be built upon atheism as their spiritual foundation, with complete neglect of the religious cultivation of personality and the replacement of all this by the mere communication of knowledge. Human personality is not only intellect but above all will and character, and neglect of this exacts a cruel revenge. The destruction among the people of centuries-old religious and moral foundations releases within it those dark elements of which there is so much in Russian history, deeply poisoned by the evil of the Tatar spirit and the instincts of nomadic conquerors. In the historical soul of the Russian people, the legacy of the Venerable Sergius’s monastery has always struggled with that of the Zaporozhian Sich or of the free bands that filled the regiments of the pretenders, Razin and Pugachev. And these formidable, unorganised, elemental forces, in their destructive nihilism, only appear to approach the revolutionary intelligentsia, although it takes them for revolutionary spirit akin to its own; in reality they are of very ancient origin, considerably older than the intelligentsia itself. Russian statehood overcame them with difficulty, imposing external bounds upon them and fettering them, but they were not wholly vanquished by it. One aspect of the influence of the intelligentsia’s Enlightenment ideology awakens these slumbering instincts and returns Russia to a chaotic condition that weakens it and that it overcame with such difficulty and sacrifice in its history. Such are the lessons of recent years, the moral of the revolution among the people.
From this the fundamental causes of the deep spiritual strife tearing Russia apart in recent times become intelligible: its division, as it were, into two irreconcilable halves, a Right and a Left Bloc, Black Hundreds and Red Hundreds. Division into parties on the basis of differences of political opinion, social position and property interests is an ordinary and widespread phenomenon in countries with popular representation, and in a certain sense a necessary evil; but nowhere does this division penetrate so deeply or disrupt the spiritual and cultural unity of the nation to such a degree as in Russia. Even the socialist parties of Western Europe, which most sharply set themselves apart from ‘bourgeois’ society as a whole, in fact remain its organic members and do not destroy the integrity of culture. Our distinction between Right and Left differs in that its object is not only a difference of political ideals but, in the overwhelming majority of cases, a difference of worldviews or faiths. If one seeks a more exact historical analogy in the history of Western Europe, it far more closely resembles the division of Catholics and Protestants, with the religious wars that followed in the Reformation era, than the political parties of today. It is enough to analyse the fundamental spiritual elements of these Right and Left Blocs to see this. Russian enlightenment, which the Russian intelligentsia is called to serve, has had to struggle against the age-old Tatar spirit deeply ingrained in various aspects of our life, against the arbitrary rule of bureaucratic absolutism and its unfitness for statecraft; formerly against serfdom and the institution of corporal punishment, and at present against the institution of capital punishment and the coarseness of morals; in general, to struggle for better conditions of life. This is the ideal content of the so-called liberation movement, whose difficulty and burden the intelligentsia took upon its shoulders, winning for itself numerous martyrs’ crowns in this struggle. But, unfortunately for Russian life, it inseparably connected this struggle with its negative worldview. Thus those who held dear the treasure of the people’s faith and felt called to guard it, above all people of the Church, found it necessary to combat the intelligentsia’s influence upon the people in order to defend that faith. Religious strife became intermingled with the struggle of political and cultural ideals, and our intelligentsia still does not know how adequately to grasp its full gravity and its menacing significance for Russia’s future. The almost wholesale departure of the intelligentsia from the Church, and the cultural isolation in which the latter consequently found itself, further worsened the historical situation. It goes without saying that for anyone who believes in the mystical life of the Church, this or that empirical form at a given historical moment has no decisive importance; whatever it may be, it cannot and must not give rise to doubt about the Church’s ultimate triumph and its enlightenment manifest to all. But, speaking of the empirical order and regarding the Russian local Church as a factor in historical development, we cannot consider it an unimportant fact that the Russian educated class has almost to a person defined itself atheistically. Such a bloodletting naturally could not fail to affect the cultural and intellectual level of those Church workers who remained. Gloating over the numerous sores of Church life is common among the intelligentsia, sores which we have no wish whatever either to minimise or to deny, while all the positive aspects of Church life remain incomprehensible or unknown to it. But does the intelligentsia have a genuine right to criticise Church life in this way while it itself remains in its former indifference or principled rejection of religion, while it sees in religion only ignorance and idiocy?
A Church intelligentsia that combined genuine Christianity with an enlightened and clear understanding of cultural and historical tasks, something so often lacking in contemporary Church workers, would, if it came into being, answer a pressing historical need. And even if it in its turn had to undergo the persecutions and oppression that the intelligentsia endures so much in the name of its atheistic ideals, this would have enormous historical, religious and moral significance and would find an altogether special response in the people’s soul.
But while the intelligentsia uses the whole force of its education to disintegrate the people’s faith, the defence of that faith, with a sad inevitability, increasingly assumes the character of a struggle not only against the intelligentsia but also against enlightenment, since in reality enlightenment spreads only through the intelligentsia: obscurantism becomes a means of defending religion. This unnatural position for both sides, sharpened precisely in recent years, makes our present condition especially agonising. To this is added the fact that self-interested supporters of reaction, swindlers fishing in troubled waters, use the struggle against the intelligentsia in defence of the people’s faith as a pretext; all this becomes tangled into a single historical and psychological knot. Habitual paths of thought and historical associations of ideas develop, and both their supporters and opponents begin to regard them as inwardly necessary and indissoluble. The two poles become ever more strongly charged with different kinds of electricity. Actual groupings of people into camps form according to this distorted standard, and a corresponding psychological atmosphere is created, conservative and despotic. The nation is split in two, and its best forces are squandered in fruitless struggle.
This situation has been created by our entire spiritual past, and the task of the age is to overcome this division, to rise above it, recognising that what underlies it is not an inner, ideal necessity but merely the force of historical fact. It is time to begin unravelling this Gordian knot of our history.
The soul of the Russian intelligentsia is woven of contradictions, as is all Russian life, and arouses contradictory feelings towards itself. One cannot help loving it, and cannot help recoiling from it. Alongside the negative traits symptomatic of a lack of culture and historical immaturity, which compel one to strive to overcome the intelligentsia, traits of spiritual beauty shine through its suffering countenance, making it resemble some quite special, precious and tender flower grown by our harsh history; as though it were itself that ‘red flower’, steeped in tears and blood, which appeared to one of its noblest representatives, the great-hearted Garshin.
Alongside the principle of Antichrist in our intelligentsia one senses higher religious potentialities too, a new historical flesh awaiting its spiritual animation. This intense search for the City of God, this striving to fulfil God’s will on earth as in heaven, differs profoundly from bourgeois culture’s attraction to secure earthly well-being. The intelligentsia’s distorted maximalism, with its practical unfitness, is a consequence of religious perversion, but it can be overcome through a restoration of religious health.
The nature of the Russian intelligentsia is religious. In Demons, Dostoevsky compared Russia, and above all its intelligentsia, to the possessed man of the Gospel, who was healed only by Christ and could find health and renewed strength only at the Saviour’s feet. This comparison remains valid even now. A legion of demons has entered Russia’s gigantic body and shakes it in convulsions, torments and cripples it. Only through a religious endeavour, invisible but great, is it possible to heal her and free her from this legion. The intelligentsia has rejected Christ, has turned away from His countenance, torn His image from its heart, deprived itself of the inward light of life, and, together with its homeland, pays for this betrayal, for this religious suicide. But strangely, it cannot forget this wound in its heart, restore its spiritual equilibrium or find calm after the devastation it has wrought upon itself. Having renounced Christ, it bears His seal upon its heart and tosses in unconscious yearning for Him, knowing no relief for its spiritual thirst. And this tormenting anxiety, this unearthly dream of an unearthly truth, sets its special mark upon it, makes it so strange, sullen, unbalanced, as though possessed. Like that beautiful Shulamite who had lost her bridegroom: upon her bed at night, through the streets and squares, she sought him whom her soul loved, asked the city watchmen whether they had seen her beloved, but the watchmen going about the city, instead of answering, only beat and wounded her (Song of Songs, 3,1–31; 4,1). Yet the Beloved, the One for whom her soul yearns, is near. He stands and knocks at this heart, this proud, disobedient intellectual heart... Will His knocking ever be heard?..
