The Hour Strikes

It is time to cease waiting, to cease hoping for happiness from beyond the sea. Out of that junk [рухлядь: broken-down lumber, wreckage] which has remained, it is necessary to begin making everything with one’s own hands.

Russia has psychologically entered such a band [полоса: strip, zone, phase] as demands discharge [разряжение: as of a charge]. The picturesque-heroic, illumination period of the revolution has passed. The epoch of constructions, of work, has arrived. But it has only been declared; it is not marked out in broad action, in methodical will.

Despite all the complexity of internal political and social colourings, there are traits covering with one mood the most various groups and strata of the population. With this mood are infected, to a significant degree, both revolutionaries and counter-revolutionaries, priests and atheists, old men and youths, workers and capitalists, the simple day-labourer and the Soviet dignitary.

This trait — reflection, disbelief, scepticism, expectation.

Even party frameworks, it appears, are not capable of disinfecting the broad masses from these moods.

How insanely few are the people obsessed with one definite organisational idea! Oh, how few they are, those who are capable of “chiselling away.” The insane leapfrog of changes of rôle [амплуа: an actor’s line of parts], of positions with different approaches, assignments, continues. Only yesterday he was still the chairman of a trust, tomorrow he is already occupied with the organisation of a theatrical troupe; today he is a specialist on calories, tomorrow he manages bathhouses. The revolutionary epoch demands, of course, leaps, but the epoch of settling-out [отстой: sedimentation, standing still] has arrived, and universalism turns into a tedious cobweb.

The time demands initiative, resourcefulness, executive capacity, yet millions of educated, knowing, quick-witted people remain in hibernation; in order to force them to reflect, to become inspired, one must all but douse them with boiling water or, in any case, draw up a protocol [протокол: official record, minutes].

But most burdensome of all is scepticism, disbelief. Enormous masses of labourers now remain in a state of inert expectation of outside unknown forces. They are convinced that abroad [заграница: the foreign lands] will come and “give”; that some sort of people will come and “oh, how they will set to work.” The more passive the people, the more they have all sorts of orientations towards external forces. God is now “cancelled,” but instead of god there has appeared the expectation of a harvest which will overturn Russia and coat with varnish all the peasant bast shoes; the divine principle [начало: beginning, origin] is invested in every “foreign representative” (whose head office is in Riga, with branches in New York and Constantinople); it is considered a sign of political maturity, instead of “Our Father,” to speak in a high style about the “solid capitals” of the Entente and America.

The overwhelming mass of the intelligentsia proved unadapted — neither to the tempo of war, nor to the tempo of revolution, nor to the tempo of our rebirth. The psychology of the quietly glimmering little flame of provincial enlightenment-work, of mystical radicalism, of zemstvo, third-element slovenliness, told in these years of world events merely as the laziness of the philistine [обыватель: the ordinary inhabitant], lulled by the quiet glimmering of little domestic curtains and Chekhovian “moods.”

And now, when war and revolution so viciously mocked the pacifist cornets who dreamed of a “sky in diamonds,” they ended in scepticism.1

1“A sky in diamonds” is a quotation from Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, representing futile, sentimental hope.

Of course, those who from day to day repeat that “we shall overwhelm them with our caps,” those too are gawkers, those too are Ivan-the-Fools, but between these two poses — of provincial self-praise and philosophical whimpering — there is a third, the genuine working pose: of unremitting labour and faith.2

2“Overwhelm with caps” (шапками закидаем) is a proverbial expression for cheap, empty bravado; Ivan-the-Fool is the stock figure of Russian folklore.

Whimpering and scepticism go alongside organisational and everyday [бытовой: of daily living] slovenliness. In a ruined poor country we conduct ourselves as though the earth groans under the weight of granaries. We are not at all pressed for time, we do not hurry. At every question, even an arch-official one, we first of all deliver a reply: “eh? what?” And the first thought is not at all action, but an attempt to parry effort and action. “But perhaps this is not needed,” “But what if up there they say [something]”… In short, instead of the simple words: “I hear [слушаю: ‘yes, sir’],” “yes,” “no,” — a whole philosophy; it is not for nothing that we in Russia have so many philosophers and psychologists. Perhaps this is the reverse side of passivity, of sluggishness. Perhaps this philosophical loading [загруженность: burden, congestion] is simply confusedness, slovenliness of thought.

Everyday slovenliness is our chief evil. “It is a trifle, it is a bagatelle, it is superficial — to demand that the desk be clean and the papers in order,” say the metropolitan, district and village Russians, all the time resolving world questions. Every neatness [аккуратность: also punctuality] and exactingness is “bureaucratism,” say the incorrigible decadents, not even conceiving that in Europe and America there already exists a million-strong army of bureaucrats working with precision to the minute, that the Proletariat and the factory administration enter and exit through the gates in thousand-strong crowds within 5 minutes, that all labouring Europe without sirens and bells lies down to sleep at 10 o’clock, and at 6 o’clock in the morning already buys a newspaper and boards the workers’ train.

It is time, then, it is time for us to catch ourselves! It is time to create cultural brigades out of those few who accept the new tempo of life, the new distinctness of its steps, the unclogged lines of motions, who know how to turn time into space and space into time. — What has happened with us in Russia?

A military-social tornado has swept through. With unprecedented force of destruction. But, to the astonishment of many, it has not only preserved its organising crater, it has come to possess an incredible voice of summons [призыв: also call-up, conscription], of energy, of will.

It demands, insists.

Of course, the deafened do not hear, the burned are under treatment, in many the souls fester. There are many who did not measure out their leaps, dislocated their legs and enrol themselves in the category of quieted-down little old men.

And yet the hurricane speaks, speaks.

Across all these nine thousand versts from Petrograd to Vladivostok it cuts out words:3

3A verst is approximately 1.07 kilometres.

To blows, to work!

And there are already people, there are severe labourers of the new epoch, drilling with their stubbornness through the rusty ruins of ruination [разруха: economic collapse, dislocation]: they are scattered across all Russia, but have merely not come forward as a played-together chorus.

We see them.

Here they are.

The factory manager who managed to create a new shop in the years of decline.

The foreman who stood at his post in the workshop from day to day, like a captain on the wheelhouse in a storm.

The worker or woman-worker who punched through with their own hands and machine-tool the labour-havoc [кавардак: muddle, mess], like an icebreaker through northern ice.

The builder of a station who worked amid the giggles and whimpering of gossips [кумушки: little godmothers, gossiping women].

The market-gardener who grew maize in these years in the region of Moscow and tomatoes in Vologda province.

“Specialists” — far from communists, but having come to love the new Russia and the new state and giving themselves over without any ulterior thoughts.

Inventors, laboratory assistants, who moved science forward with youthful joy.

Teachers, male and female, who lived in cold sheds on a crust of bread, but created an army of new youth.

Finally, artists of the theatre and of literature, speaking in the language of constructions and of pressure [напор: thrust, head of water].

They — these people — are the genuine command platoon of our country.

To the unformed crowds, to the scattered columns of the people, they cast a hard speech:

— Down with the panic rhythm, from campaign to campaign, from harvest to harvest, from rain to rain, down with all the weeks of cleanliness, the weeks of the louse, as in the ancient calendars of saints, down with disbelief, the rust of the psyche, tangled walking and gaping.

To bare methodology, to training, unremitting as a metronome.

To take the solemn seething [клокот: bubbling boil] of popular pathos, all the audacity of the revolution, to solder them through with verified [calibrated] oscillation, with even pressing [нажим: the pressure of a tool].

And all this — in an open will, proceeding along a through route [сквозной маршрут: direct, uninterrupted transit].

A course towards characters, a course towards active builders of life,

If they are not there, it is necessary to give birth to them.

Everywhere, at whatsoever point of Russia, it is necessary to begin working, it is necessary to take life by assault, by siege, by a methodical, stubborn siege.

There is no iron — make [it] out of wood. Do not ask and do not wait. There are no socks, take foot-cloths, but wind them on the foot artistically neatly.

With effort, or, more correctly, with severe violence over oneself, it is possible, having found oneself in a forest with only fire, a knife and half a pood of bread, to unfold within half a year a genuine economy [хозяйство: farm, household establishment]. One need only think into it on the very next day: how to set up more firmly the thrust-stakes [упорные колья: supporting stakes; упор is a stop, a thrust-bearing] for the campfire, to knock together a spade, to craft a house, to gather edible leaves, berries and roots and even to set up a pharmacy.4

4A pood is approximately 16.38 kilograms.

It is necessary to become dexterous detectives [sleuths] of life, to know how to orientate oneself rapidly and to unfold [развертываться: deploy, as troops].
