The Greco-Roman Setting. The Apostle Paul.

In speaking of the Greco-Roman setting, we do not yet have Greek philosophy in mind, or the various offshoots of Platonism that later exerted so powerful an influence on Christian thought, both Gnostic and orthodox. In the first decades of Christianity, indeed throughout the whole first century, this influence made itself felt only weakly, and chiefly through the intermediary of Alexandrian Jewish philosophy. For the present, what we have in mind is the social condition of the Greco-Roman world, especially that of Asia Minor, and its psychological and religious temper, which naturally corresponded to its socioeconomic condition. The spread of Christianity and the emergence of its new form, phenomena usually closely associated with the name of the apostle Paul, will remain incomprehensible unless they are understood as a natural mass phenomenon of social psychology. Paul was merely its most vivid exponent, as the most conscious bearer of the tendencies drawing the pagan and Jewish worlds together in a new religiosity. Karl Kautsky has given so clear and concise a picture of the general condition of the Roman world at the beginning of the Christian era that I can do nothing but borrow his interesting historical synthesis.

“At the time to which the birth of Christ is assigned,” says Kautsky, “the Roman republic was in its death throes, and the beginnings of Caesarism had appeared.” “Aristocracy and democracy alike had then proved bankrupt. The core of the people, the free peasantry, had withered within the Roman state; in many regions it had disappeared altogether. The greatness and glory of the state were built upon the peasant’s ruin. Perpetual wars, fought by the citizen militia, brought peasant agriculture into decline, while large landowners, who managed their estates with slaves, suffered no injury. On the contrary, these very wars supplied them with extraordinarily cheap slaves. It is therefore hardly surprising that the slaveholding economy rapidly expanded and displaced the economy of the free peasant. The free, vigorous peasantry melted like snow in the sun. Here and there it still scraped along somehow, but most of it turned into a proletariat, that is, a vagabond proletariat, since the demand for hired labor was still small, and there was nothing for the peasants to do. In industry, as in agriculture, slave labor predominated. Landless peasants flocked into the great cities, where, together with freed slaves, they formed the lowest stratum of the population.” “But as long as the democratic republic existed, mass poverty was not yet mass destitution. Having lost everything, the people retained their political power and knew very well how to use it, exploiting in the most varied ways the wealthy conquered territories that paid tribute. Political power gave them not only bread and spectacles, but sometimes means of production as well, landed property. Throughout the last centuries of the Roman republic, continuous attempts were made to create a new peasantry by allotting peasant holdings to proletarians. But all these attempts to arrest the course of economic development were unsuccessful. They foundered on the political and economic superiority of the great landowners, who obstructed their implementation as far as they could; and even when they did succeed, the landowners rapidly displaced the newly created peasants and bought up their lands. On the other hand, these attempts also foundered on the corruption of the vagabond proletariat, which no longer wished to work and preferred the amusements of the capital to the poor, laborious, care-laden life of the small peasant in the countryside. Proletarians often obstructed the implementation of social reforms undertaken for their own benefit, quickly squandering the estates allotted to them, or selling their political power to the wealthy great landowners and directing it against the social reformers.” “The thinking of the proletarians and their friends took a different direction when political life came to a standstill; when the propertyless sank as low morally and politically as the propertied; when democracy became as unstable as aristocracy; and when the ground had been prepared for the appearance of an autocrat, an emperor, the commander of a mercenary army, and for the beginnings of bureaucracy.” “With political power, the most important, or rather the only, source of income for the proletarian of antiquity dried up. Poverty now meant destitution as well. The poverty of the masses called forth terrible phenomena in Roman society, previously unknown. Pauperism, the poverty and destitution of the masses, became the most important social question, a question demanding a solution ever more insistently. For social development continued on its course: the middle strata disappeared more and more, the rich grew ever richer, and the number of the propertyless increased. Roman civilization could attain its heights only thanks to the abundance of labor at its disposal, which it expended without calculation. When the abundance of labor was destroyed, the abundance of products also disappeared. Agriculture and industry declined,

and became increasingly crude and barbarous. Then art and science also fell into decline.” “This social decline unfolded over a long period. Several centuries passed before Rome descended from the heights of proud grandeur it occupied under Augustus and his first successors to the wretched level at which it stood at the beginning of the migration of peoples. But the impetus toward decline had already been given in the first century of our era, and many of its features could already be discerned at that time. Along with this decline, and because of it, a new social force grew up. In the general collapse it saved everything that could be saved, and finally passed on the remnants of Roman civilization to the Germans, where they laid the foundation for a new, higher civilization. That force was Christianity.” Such is K. Kautsky’s characterization of the social conditions of the age. The decline of science, which was capable, in one way or another, of resisting the waves of superstition, helped them triumph, a triumph engendered by the terrible conditions of life. Corresponding to Platonic dualism, which in the upper strata expressed itself in increasingly fantastic but still philosophical forms, there was among the lower strata a profound weariness of living, an aversion to a world overflowing with suffering, and the natural protest of everything alive in the organism. All that, finding no place for real hope, exuberantly grew whole forests of fantasies and tales to console humanity. People yearned for a miracle and awaited it, for outside a miracle no salvation could be seen. Some went so far as to posit a fundamental opposition between an exalted spiritual principle and a base material one, between the heavenly and the earthly. Others understood the miraculous as the intervention of divine forces in the real world to transform it in the spirit of human needs. But both alike arrived at faith in something beyond the earth. This faith was a condition of continuing to live; outside it there remained only despair. Isolated oases of civilization, skeptical and refined, but rotten at their economic root and incapable of economic progress, were swept away by the wave of universal suffering and universal disintegration. A voracious superstition, tossing about in desperation, organic, not merely credulous but creative, fantasizing and enraptured, rejoicing in everything miraculous: such was the spirit of the age. It was a kingdom of universal historical falsehood and self-deception, because in the truth there seemed to be no glimmer of light. “Christianity,” says Bebel, “was the necessary outcome of humanity’s spiritual temper, determined by the social conditions of life. The oppressed masses, the victims of ignorance, did not know how to help themselves and were filled with gloomy despair. The economic and scientific underdevelopment of the age prevented even the few fighters for an ideal from finding a saving way out, and compelled them in the end to imbibe and propagate the same Christian ideas.” “Christianity arose at a time,” says Engels, “when even in Rome and Hellas, and still more in Asia Minor, Syria, and Egypt, there prevailed a wholly uncritical mixture of the crudest superstitions of the most diverse peoples, accepted on faith by everyone and supplemented by pious deception, or even outright charlatanism. Miracles, ecstasies, visions, spirits, incantations, and other magic played the leading role. Such was the atmosphere in which Christianity arose, and moreover among people whose ears were most open to such things.” The provinces had been ruined, all homelands had been killed, and there, as in Rome, no room remained for social life as the natural complement of personal life. The longing for personal immortality grew more anguished and became more constant as earthly personal life took an ever more unfortunate course. And with all this went a profound consciousness of one’s own sinfulness. People could explain the whole sea of suffering Author’s footnote : Hegel subtly noted this in his youthful work on Christ.

И при всем том, еще глубокое сознание своей греховности. only as a punishment sent down upon the whole human race for its sinfulness. And its sinfulness, the baseness of human beings amid the ruins of the old civilizations, stared one in the face. Religions arose one after another, each striving to explain the cause of evil and to find a way out of it through one or another form of redemption. Among other religions, the religion of the Jews also aspired to become universal. Together with Judaism, represented in the colonies of the metropolis chiefly by the poor class, there spread that specific form of monotheism, democratic and mystical in its essence and communist in its organizational form, which was primitive Christianity. Renan has given a masterly description of this endosmosis of Palestinian ideas into all the tissues of the half-decomposed Roman world. Christian propaganda followed in the footsteps of Judaism. The Jewish religion, even in itself, as a religious-philosophical conception, impressed people: “Judaism possessed no small power of attraction,” says Renan, “and this lay not in its forms, which on the whole differed little from the ritual practices of other religions, but in its extraordinary theological simplicity. It was accepted as a kind of deism, full of a philosophical spirit.” An excellent example of the endosmosis of which we speak is the secret influence of the Jewish colony in Rome, as characterized by Renan: “The principal Jewish quarter in Rome was the district beyond the Tiber, that is, the dirtiest and poorest part of the city. There, protected by the very contempt they inspired in everyone, but little affected by the mockery showered upon them, they led a very active social life.... Their synagogues were admirably organized.... Quite a few wealthy people patronized them, even adopting Jewish names.... Poor Jews, begging alms in a trembling voice, knew how to impress one wealthy lady or another with a saying from Scripture. To observe the Sabbath and other Jewish festivals meant, according to Horace, to certify one’s intellectual poverty and lower oneself to the crowd, to become ‘unus multorum.’ Goodwill toward everyone, the happiness of resting with the righteous, help for the poor, purity of morals, the quiet joy of family life, meek submission in the face of death, regarded as sleep: such are the features reproduced by Jewish epitaphs, full of touching gentleness and profound hope, and in this respect not inferior to Christian ones.” The Christians were the poorest of the poor among the Jews: “This whole little world,” says Renan, “these ancestors of the Roman prelates, were half-destitute proletarians. They smelled of garlic, repelled people with their filth, were distinguished by awkwardness and coarseness, dressed in rags, and had foul breath, like all ill-nourished people.” “Certainly,” Renan remarks, “the proud patricians, strolling on the Aventine and casting a glance across the Tiber, did not imagine what was being prepared in that cluster of poor houses.” Yet it was precisely in such quarters that the triumph of Christianity was being prepared. “The notion,” says Renan, “that Christianity spread through the preaching of a kind of missionary who went from city to city is completely mistaken. Only Paul and Barnabas did that. The great bulk of the work was done by workers whose names have remained unknown. Beside the illustrious apostles there arose another apostolate, obscure, lacking a dogmatic and professional character, but all the more effective. The Jews were very mobile at that time. They moved about through all the coastal cities as merchants, servants, and small artisans.... They predominated among the common people, Author’s footnote : I have taken the quotations from various chapters of his book The Holy Apostle Paul. The translation is everywhere my own.

Они доминировали среди простонародья, Примечание автора 1) Цитаты взяты мною из различных глав его книги «Святой Апостол Павел». as people full of enthusiasm easily predominate over the indifferent. Members of the Christian sect traveled like other Jews and carried the good news with them. Their gentleness, quiet cheerfulness, and patience made them welcome guests everywhere and drew hearts to them.” Thus, like an oil stain, first Judaism and then, along its tracks, Christianity spread among the democratic masses. But Christianity had to break with Judaism and burst its confines in order to spread with incomparably greater speed. Jewry only waited anxiously for the Messiah; the Christians already had him: concrete, certain, close, and beloved, having already fulfilled his redemptive ministry and promised a speedy second coming in glory. In the meantime he had bestowed the Holy Spirit. This Holy Spirit manifested itself not only in constant, enthusiastic expectation, ecstasies, and loving mutual relations, but also in the organization that the Christians developed as best suited to the transitional period that still separated them from the joyful and terrible day of judgment upon the mighty of this world and the triumph of poor Lazarus, that personification of the community of the poor. [cf. Luke 16:19–31] Kautsky characterizes this aspect of the matter superbly. “Chiliastic expectations are one of the most outstanding features of the spiritual life of ancient Christianity. But the supposition that ancient Christianity drew the most essential part of its power from chiliasm would be as mistaken as the opinion that the strength of modern Social Democracy rests upon the promise of some ‘state of the future.’” “Ancient Christianity[E6] became impossible for the rulers of its age to defeat because it became indispensable to the mass of the population. Its victory was furthered by its practical influence, rather than by pious dreams.” “Those in need could not be helped by exaggerated dreams of the bliss the Messiah would bring from heaven. The same strata in which chiliasm arose also provided the soil for energetic attempts to overcome the existing destitution. These attempts had to have a wholly different character from the attempts of the Gracchi. The latter appealed to the state; they wanted the proletariat to seize political power and make use of it. Now, however, all political movement had ceased, and the authority of the state inspired no confidence at all. The new social reformers wanted to transform society by means of special organizations entirely independent of the state, outside it rather than with its assistance. At the outset the Christian movement was exclusively urban, so that ‘peasant’ and ‘non-Christian’ became equivalent concepts.” “The direction of ancient Christianity was initially determined by the vagabond proletariat of the capital, which had lost the habit of working. To these elements production seemed a fairly indifferent matter. Their ideal was the birds of the air, which neither sow nor reap, yet are fed. [cf. Matt. 6:26; Luke 12:24] In seeking a different distribution of property, they had in mind means of consumption rather than means of production. Communism of consumption was by no means something unheard of to the vagabond proletariat of that time. In the last days of the republic, periodic public feeding of enormous masses of the needy and the distribution of means of subsistence to them had become commonplace; these continued in the first days of the empire. What could be more natural than the desire to systematize this feeding and distribution, to achieve a regular communism of the available means of consumption, partly through equal Author’s footnote : Expectations of the second coming and of Christ’s thousand-year kingdom. In essence the Christians adapted organizations that had already taken shape earlier and had been brought to the highest degree of perfection. Josephus relates of Essene communism: “They set wealth at nothing and, on the contrary, highly praise the community of property; among them there is not one man wealthier than the others. They have a law according to which all who wish to enter their order must hand over their property for common use. Thus among them neither want nor excess is to be seen, but everything is held in common, as among brothers.... They do not all live together in one city, but have their own houses in every city. When members of their order come to them from other places, they share their property with them, and the newcomers may use it as their own. Although entirely unacquainted, they stay with one another without further ceremony and behave as though they had spent their whole lives in the closest relations with each other. When traveling, they take with them only weapons to protect themselves against robbers. In every city they have a steward who distributes clothing and food to travelers.... They do not trade among themselves. But if someone gives a person in need what he requires, he receives from him in turn what is necessary. Even if he himself is unable to give anything, he may nevertheless confidently ask anyone for what he needs.” The first Christian communities were organized in exactly the same way. In any event, the Christian communities quickly outstripped the Essenes in one respect: they were international, corresponding to the international character of the great Roman empire, and this had great importance. The Essenes held firmly to Jewry. They remained a small sect and hardly ever numbered more than 4,000 members. Christianity, by contrast, conquered the Roman empire.[E7] Such were the conditions, such the manner of spreading, such the forces of original Christianity. Chiliasm itself, that is, the expectation of the Messiah, naturally had to acquire other features, no longer purely Jewish. To some extent, however, this had already been prepared by Pharisaism. It was precisely as a well-educated Pharisee that the apostle Paul, the great bearer of the new, universal Christianity, was capable of an exalted and mystical conception of Christ and the world to come. Harnack describes as follows the mystical messianism that, naturally under the influence of neighboring peoples, had already penetrated many Jewish minds: “Expectations of the future become more and more transcendent; they acquire an increasingly supernatural, otherworldly coloring. Something entirely new descends from heaven to earth, and an entirely new course of events replaces the old. Its ultimate goal appears no longer as a transformed earth, but as the idea of absolute bliss, whose place will be heaven itself. The person of the expected Messiah is increasingly decisively detached both from the idea of an earthly king and from the national idea, and also from the idea of God. The Messiah sheds his last earthly features, although he will appear as a man among men. He is with God from the beginning, descends from heaven, and accomplishes his work with superhuman means at his disposal. Moral features emerge in his image: he is the perfectly righteous man who fulfills all the commandments. There even arises the conception that his merits save others.” On the innovative activity of the apostle Paul, Pfleiderer observes: “Paul is reproached for allegedly having distorted the Gospel, introducing alien elements into it by mixing the pagan with the Jewish.

it is impossible to deny that Paul’s own teaching, namely the teaching of Christ as a being begotten outside time, who descended from heaven and became man; the teaching of his redemptive sacrifice to reconcile God with humanity; the teaching of his victory over death through resurrection and of the renewal of humanity, of the transformation of human beings into sons of God, immortal and living in fellowship with God: all these teachings were alien to the original Christian community. Conversely, these teachings touch very closely upon certain pagan conceptions and practices: the conception of gods taking human form and descending to earth; the myth of the God who suffers, dies, and rises again; and mystical rites intended to make humanity a participant in divine life. Such conceptions and rites were especially widespread in Syria, Cilicia, and generally in the countries where Paul carried out his missionary activity for fourteen years. It is evident that Paul fell under some influence from what he heard and saw here, and that this influence manifested itself in his teaching on redemption.” Pfleiderer, however, is far from censuring the apostle. He considers his conduct entirely rational: “What could the pagans among whom he preached have in common with the Jewish Messiah? They had neither understanding nor interest for him, and still less for Jewish law and worship. Yet some form of worship was necessary. Where could it be found except by adapting the old, widespread forms of worship to the new ideas? All this was natural.” And, we would add, even more natural than Pfleiderer thinks. Paul certainly did not ponder how he could most easily capture the minds of pagans. Rather, messianic ideas naturally entered, so to speak, into a chemical combination with the kindred ideas of the pagan world. In the chapter on Orphism we pointed out the closeness of Orphic ideas of redemption and Orphic redemptive rites to the Christian ones. But Orphism was only the Greek form of that Syrian, Asiatic religiosity of which Pfleiderer speaks. Long before, observation of the most divine phenomenon of nature, the sun, had given rise to the myth of a God who is born, serves the world by accomplishing mighty deeds, suffers (grows pale and loses strength), and dies in order to rise again. The plant world, with its yearly cycle, spoke of death and resurrection. But humanity put into myths the content supplied by life. In place of the radiant, burning, rapacious, invincible Moloch and Baal, figures of Attis and Mithras gradually established themselves, in which the sun was perceived precisely from the aspect of its service, suffering, death, and resurrection. It was precisely here that the naturalistic hypothesis, which originally had the character of a primitive religion only insofar as the sun inspired fear and hope and became an object of supplication, turned into a genuine historical religion, becoming a profound, mysterious archetype of human life. Individuals, peoples, and the whole race suffer and die; yet is not the cry of hope for resurrection, for victory, heard everywhere? The triumph of life over death: this was what deeply stirred the human being of that time in the spectacle of the rising sun, the return of warmth, the sprouting of plants after winter or drought. When nature showed him death, he wept, feeling his own mortality; when it rose again, radiant with life, he was filled with joy and hope. The God who suffers, dies, and rises again victorious was a symbol of life. His worship had long been a manifestation of all the emotions bound up with the question of life and death, enjoyment Author’s footnote : Hardly wholly and entirely alien. But Paul developed them much further. Entirely alien to the primitive community was the teaching of the futility of the law and of justification by faith alone, of which more below.

and suffering, defeat and victory. How could this worship fail to become worldwide, universal? And so it was becoming. Whether people prayed to Osiris, Attis, or Mithras, to Isis, Cybele, Demeter, Bacchus, Khumes, or Heracles, everywhere they prayed to great symbols of life. But of course, as life objectified itself, it cast upon nature what were like monstrous shadows, which were taken for gods. It was believed that the great drama, the real drama, unfolded elsewhere, beyond space, or in the stars, or above the stars, rather than here among human beings. Actual life was regarded as precisely the pale reflection of the divine drama. But what did the Jewish democratic masses bring with them? The tidings of the redemption of all the poor by an emissary of God, who through suffering had earned forgiveness and triumph for them and was ready to return to taste, together with them, the fruits of his struggle and his victory. For the prophets this was a symbol of the Jewish people’s suffering and victory. For the Christians it was a statement of historical fact: the one of whom the prophets spoke, as they believed, had come, suffered, died, and risen again. With the joyful tidings of this, the Jewish democratic masses addressed the proletariat of the whole world. And they encountered soil already prepared. “We know of a God who suffers, dies, and rises again. Is not your Jesus Christ this God?” “Yes, surely it is he.” “He was created before the ages, descended from heaven, became man, and, having fulfilled his ministry, returned to heaven, and surely shares dominion over the universe with God, the Ruler of the World.” “Yes, that is so,” the followers of Paul said in their hearts and in their preaching. They loved Christ still more, having become convinced that he was a deity. Then came the question of the essence of this deity and his relation to the Ruler of the World and the creation of the world. But Paul only approached these questions, leaving their solution to the coming centuries and to Hellenic philosophical thought. Let us now look closely at the authentic features of Pauline Christianity in its development. We can reconstruct this Christianity with considerable completeness, and its course of development is fairly clear to us, for here we are dealing with precious and authentic documents, namely Paul’s epistles. Unable to repeat the arguments of criticism here, we shall confine ourselves to listing those epistles considered authentic, in chronological order and with a few comments. The following may be regarded as authentic epistles of the apostle: 1) The First Epistle to the Thessalonians and the Epistle to the Galatians, which depict Paul’s system in its initial stage, as it took shape in his mind under the influence of the religious temper of the population of Antioch and of other pagans. 2) The First and Second Epistles to the Corinthians, which reflect the influence of Alexandrian Jewish theology, specifically through the intermediary of Apollos, half the apostle’s opponent and half his friend. 3) The Epistle to the Romans, representing, as it were, a summation of Paul’s whole teaching. 4) The Epistles to the Thessalonians,[E8] testifying to a further step by Paul toward a Hellenized, already semi-Gnostic Christianity. 5) The Epistle to the Philippians, and finally the Epistles to the Ephesians and Colossians, belonging to the apostle’s old age, to the Roman period of his life. The differences of style and thought characteristic of these last epistles lead many critics to regard them as works of his school, of his disciples, who passed them off as epistles of the master himself in order to give them greater authority. However that may be, they constitute a further development in the same direction in which Paul himself was moving. For some reason Renan thought it necessary to end his book on Paul with an unjust and hostile characterization of him. He tries to belittle him, not only in

comparison with the figure of Christ that he himself created, but even with the other apostles, of whom we essentially know nothing. In fact, for any impartial researcher acquainted with the monuments of the first century, the figure of Paul stands out distinctly, vividly, and interestingly against the murky background of mass movements, in whose chaos other persons can scarcely be distinguished. And he emerges clearly before us less from Luke’s diplomatic and conciliatory work, full of accounts of his exploits and miracles, than from his astonishing epistles. He was a man of fiery soul and indomitable will, angry and prickly, sparing neither himself nor others, a nature almost pathological in its unbridled force. But what is most interesting about Paul is precisely that this unbridled character gave itself wholly to one cause, one idea. For Paul neither love nor hatred exists outside his ideological struggle. Within it he can be tender and terrible, self-sacrificing and jealous, meek and hungry for power. Yet outside his preaching and the world of the churches he founded, there is and can be nothing for him. He is a monomaniac, and that is why his ideological influence is so powerful. He proceeds in a straight line, striking at a single point. He was gripped by the greatness of the mystery disclosed to him, the mystery of the world’s approaching end as the result of the fulfillment of time. For the world had already filled the cup of God’s patience to overflowing with its abominations. The law had saved no one, but merely illuminated with a dazzling ray the abysses and deformities of sin. Yet God still loves the world and has forgiven it for the merits of the great intercessor for the world, whom he himself bestowed upon human beings and who bore upon himself the sins of the world. He was crucified, and sin was crucified with him; he rose again, and human beings rose again with him. And now it is enough simply to know this fact, believe in it, and wait patiently. For the Gospel must fly around the world, must be proclaimed to the ends of the earth, as far as distant Spain; and then everything will be ready, the hour will come, the transfiguration will take place. [cf. Rom. 15:24; Rom. 15:28] In a language full of poetry, majestically fantastic, tenderly moved and enraptured, Paul paints his pictures of universal resurrection, judgment, and bliss. He rejoices with a great, wondrous joy that he can be proud of his humanity: he is already a partaker of God, an heir to eternal life, a redeemer of the sufferings of all creation; he is a judge of angels. But the higher Paul’s joyful pride in his humanity rises, the more profoundly, passionately, and insistently he affirms that all this has been bestowed upon humanity without its having earned it. Paul is a profound pessimist; he despises human beings. For him the flesh is full of lustful, loathsome filth. Only the soul, and not even the whole soul but merely its heights, does he regard as something like a little pure flame, scarcely flickering in our contemptible body. The more Paul hates the human being, the more he needs a gigantic faith in his transfiguration, a dazzling dream of his imminent greatness. The more he wishes to purify and elevate his ideal of the truly human, the spiritual, the more sharply he demonstrates that an abyss lies between this ideal and the bodily human being. Only a being midway between God and humanity, at the cost of suffering, humiliation, and death, throws a bridge across this abyss. Let us therefore love this being boundlessly and unreservedly. The teaching of Jesus? Paul seems not even to know it; he does not speak of it. It is the ministry that matters to him, the mystery of redemption, the death on the cross, the resurrection! And that is why, bearing in his breast the radiance of this world-justifying idea, this iridescent hope, Paul grows so fierce when he is reminded of the law of circumcision. What is it for? What does a lump of dirt, the bodily human being, wish to add by his works to the grace freely bestowed through the miracle of the sufferer, Christ the redeemer? That is why he is seized with horror and fury,

when he hears that people who have come to know the faith of the Gospel are sinning! Paul is such an eagle’s flight of pride and of joy in life made upright that one cannot but forgive him all the humiliating and dark aspects which, for that age, were inseparably bound up with the bright ones. Seeing no natural path to the ideal, Paul, himself a source of seething energy, deprived humanity of its power. The human being and his works are nothing. He turned him into a slave, a thing belonging to the Ruler of the World, because he wished to humble his actual being before his ideal being and to exalt the supernatural force, the only force mighty enough to recreate humanity. And in making the human being a slave of God, a powerless thing of God’s making (see, for example, the Epistle to the Romans, 22), [Rom. 9:20–22 (printed locator defective)] in order then to make him God’s dear son through the intermediary of God’s own love and action, Paul did not lament that he should remain the slave of another human being.[E9] Unlike the democratic Ebionites, whose temper was almost revolutionary, Paul is an opportunist. Everything must remain as before. What matters is the spirit’s soaring flight; otherwise one may remain a slave or continue to be a master. One need only avoid introducing into these relations anything that disgraces the soul. Above all, it is important to be indifferent to everything earthly. And here liberal Christians begin to appeal to Paul. They are happy, relying on him, to teach that Christianity is not of this world, that the poor man must reconcile himself to destitution while the rich man enjoys comfort, since all this is vanity before the light of Christian truth. But the liberals forget that Paul expected the end of the world from day to day, that he promised the “Zusammenbruch” even to his own generation. Paul’s opportunism did not resemble that of people content with crumbs, as enlightened pastors would like to think; it was the opportunism of anarchists preparing a general strike. Paul was an opportunist because of the greatness and impetuosity of his revolutionary idea. [cf. John 18:36] Slave, do not concern yourself with such trifles as freedom for this remaining scrap of time. [cf. 1 Cor. 7:21][E10] Love, pray, think, purify and adorn the soul, the bride: behold, the bridegroom comes at midnight! [cf. Matt. 25:6] He brings eternal freedom and will make you a brother of God and a lord of angels! Let us examine Paul’s ideas somewhat more closely, insofar as space permits. We shall briefly trace the development of his Christology, acquaint ourselves with his teaching on justification and with his morality in relation to the morality of the first Christian community. Paul’s Christology. Paul did not know Jesus during his lifetime. But as an advanced Pharisee he firmly believed in the coming of the Messiah, a man supernaturally endowed and close to God, who was to bring salvation to Israel and the world, delivering the flesh from death and bestowing resurrection. The steadfastness of the Christians in the face of persecution made him wonder whether the crucified and risen Jesus might have been the Messiah. In a dazzling moment of insight Paul brought all his inward labor to its conclusion and accepted Jesus. Yes, he had indeed been the Messiah. For Paul, who had not known Christ, neither his life nor his teaching was important; the facts did not obstruct the nascent dogma. The Messiah had been in the world and brought faith, a sure promise of the eternal life to come, for which the miracle of his resurrection served as proof: it showed that he was stronger than death. His true coming must be awaited with faith; the interval is given for announcing it to the world. The crucifixion and death are an act of mystical sacrifice: once and for all a redemptive sacrifice has been offered, reconciling humanity with heaven and consequently freeing people from the burden of sin. Pharisaic hopes revived and were illuminated, and the ecstasy of proclaiming the good tidings engulfed Paul’s passionate soul like a flame. Turning with his preaching to the pagans of Asia Minor, he found, as we have already said, prepared

soil. Suffering, death, and resurrection, as a drama of redemption, were the central idea of numerous cults, for example that of Adonis. The death of the god, bitterly mourned, his descent into the underworld, his solemn new coming, filling hearts with joy: such was the content of the religion of the sun, fertility, and life. This cycle was not always associated with a god; sometimes its hero was a demigod. When Paul began to preach his renewed Pharisaic teaching, at the same time presenting Jesus as the Messiah who had come, he met with full understanding and the question: “Is not this Jesus God?” But the idea of a god who had become man was too alien to a Jew. Paul confined himself to giving Jesus the title Son of God and mentioning him alongside God as the highest being after Him, to whom human beings owed so much. Yet the earliest epistles say nothing about Christ’s pre-existence, his beginningless eternity. They may be understood as meaning that Jesus was a human Messiah, exalted by God for his sacrifice, his work of redemption, his victory over death, just as, through his merits, all who believe in him will also be exalted. He is the first human being to have conquered death, our leader in this struggle. Following his example, we must crucify our flesh and live by spirit alone; then we too shall be transfigured into sons of God. Paul’s formula in the first two epistles is: “We await from heaven the Son of God, whom He raised from the dead, Jesus, who delivers us from the wrath to come.” [cf. 1 Thess. 1:10] Constantly repeated is: “God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ.” [cf. Gal. 5:24] Paul’s preaching continued in Macedonia and Greece. Did Paul’s horizon broaden along with it? Did his philosophy rise to greater heights, enriched by the ideas of Hellenic wisdom? No. Paul felt hostility toward Greek philosophy and, with embittered and arrogant humility, opposed his “foolishness for Christ” to the wisdom of the wise. [cf. 1 Cor. 4:10] He had to deal exclusively with common people, little informed about philosophy; what Paul had brought with him from Asia to Europe was enough for him. But, following in his footsteps, a teacher with a more fully developed system of views came to the same Corinth, the center of Paul’s Greek church. This man taught more in the spirit of the disputes and speculations of the philosophers, whose echoes naturally reached the poor quarters too. At the first news of the new teacher, Paul grew indignant and his jealous soul trembled. But on becoming more closely acquainted with the new teaching, he was struck by its coherence and adopted it, since it, so to speak, crowned the work of his own thought. Of course, however, he did not wish to appear as a pupil in the eyes of his flock. He therefore writes to the Corinthians that he had taught them only the beginnings of wisdom, that he had sown, laid the foundation; Apollos had watered, built further. [cf. 1 Cor. 3:6; 1 Cor. 3:10] In the Epistle to the Corinthians we already encounter new notes: “There are many gods and many lords, but for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things, and we for Him, and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we through Him.” [1 Cor. 8:5–6] God and Lord are distinguished as two different concepts: we have only one God and only one Lord; the Lord is not God. This is in the spirit of the earlier teaching. But some profound participation in the very creation of the world is already acknowledged for the “Lord.” True, the idea is not yet clear. The whole epistle is deeper in thought. Mystical philosophy breathes through the opposition of the two Adams. The ritual germ of the Mass is striking in its elaboration and importance: it is interpreted not as a simple remembrance of Christ, but as a mystical union with him, a miraculous continuation of the sacrifice he offered. The person of Jesus acquires ever greater mystery. [cf. 1 Cor. 10:16–17; 1 Cor. 11:23–26] [cf. 1 Cor. 15:45–49] Paul took this further step in his development under the influence of Apollos, with whom, into the stream of young Christianity,

flowed a brook of Alexandrian speculation. Apollos helped Paul take the decisive step toward the final deification of Jesus, which was repugnant to pure Jewish monotheism. Alexandria, with its divided monotheism, its idea of the One and His emanations, was to throw a bridge between the pure monotheism of the prophets and the longing for a concrete, humanlike God characteristic of the West. Perhaps Jesus himself, a God-possessed enthusiast, was inclined at the height of his ministry to identify the spirit dwelling in him with God himself. Perhaps this even brought about the collapse of his work in Jerusalem. But Alexandria was bound to welcome this idea. It was an echo returning to her of her own speculations and explorations, of the Hellenization of Scripture that she had undertaken. In the person of Apollos she zealously supported the idea, which had begun to fade, of the essential divinity of the carpenter’s son from Nazareth. Renan ingeniously reconstructs the relations between Paul and Apollos. “The most important fact was the conversion of the Alexandrian Jew Apollonius, or Apollos, who arrived in Ephesus shortly after Paul. He had a profound knowledge of Scripture in its Greek translation, knew how to interpret it with great ingenuity, and possessed an exalted eloquence. He resembled Philo, the eager seeker of novelty that was breaking through on every side within Judaism. He was already in close relations with the disciples of John the Baptist and had received baptism from them. He had heard reports of Jesus and was inclined to acknowledge him as the Christ, but his knowledge of Christianity was incomplete.” [cf. Acts 18:24–28] He supplemented this knowledge through conversations with humble bearers of Christian propaganda, the artisans Aquila and his wife Priscilla, friends of Paul who had settled in Ephesus by that time. Apollos’s preaching in this city met with enormous success. He encountered still greater success in learned Corinth, where people were fond of dialectical subtleties and disputes. [cf. Acts 18:24–28] “Apollos equaled Paul in knowledge of Scripture,” Renan continues, “but considerably surpassed him in literary education. He spoke excellent Greek, unlike Paul’s poor language. Apparently he surpassed Paul in the outward gifts of an orator. In disputes with the Jews over whether Jesus was truly the Messiah, he invariably prevailed and converted many.” [cf. Acts 18:24–28] The supporters of Paul and Apollos were already beginning to divide into two sects, and the two teachers decided to meet, which took place in Ephesus. [cf. 1 Cor. 1:12; 1 Cor. 3:4] “He found Paul there,” says Renan, “and had long conversations with him. He formed close relations with him, those of two friends rather than pupil and teacher, a feeling worthy of these two great souls, who were able to understand and help each other.” [cf. 1 Cor. 1:12; 1 Cor. 3:4] Apollos’s influence on Paul can hardly be denied. As we have said, new notes already sound in the Epistle to the Corinthians, which subsequently grow and become predominant in the last epistles. But what did Apollos’s teaching consist in, what was its originality? Above all, in a bold acknowledgment of the divine, supernatural, mysterious nature of Jesus Christ. The whole first chapter of his epistle, that is, the Epistle to the Hebrews formerly attributed to Paul, is devoted to proofs of this proposition: “God, who at many times and in many ways spoke of old to the fathers in the prophets, in these last days has spoken to us in the Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom He also created the ages. He, being the radiance of His glory and the image of His hypostasis,[E11] and upholding all things by the word of His power, having by Himself made purification for our sins, sat down at the right hand of the (throne of) Majesty on [Heb. 1:1–4]

high, having become so much superior to the angels as the name He has inherited is more glorious than theirs” [Heb. 1:1–4] (Hebrews, chapter 1, verses 1, 2, 3, 4). This Alexandrian teaching of the hypostasis,[E11] the radiance of glory, as a distinct person is entirely alien both to the official ecclesiastical teaching of the Jews and to the prophets of the aggadah. But the aggadah developed, advanced, and became paganized. Apollos, however, did not wish to break with tradition, and in the epistle he tries to find support for his teaching in the Psalms and the works of the prophets. These references show great learning, but all are based on misunderstandings. We cannot enter into an examination of this question. For us another question is more important: what compelled Apollos to seek a deity alongside the One God? Why did he so strongly wish to identify this deity with Jesus? The answer will shed light on the new allies acquired by Paul. In our view Apollos is an exalted exemplar of the Jewish intelligentsia of that time. An awakened mind and broad education seemed to make them the leaders of their people along the path of spiritual and cultural progress. To this end it was necessary to break down the partitions of narrow Jewry, the orthodox exclusiveness of the Jews. To break them down meant to weaken the enormous power of Jerusalem, the Temple, the priests and scribes, that mighty hierarchy which held a gifted nation in its claws. It meant to return Jewry to the earth, to culture, and definitively to place at its head its intellectual class, non-priestly and unofficial. The current in this direction was extraordinarily strong. The class consciousness of the, so to speak, bourgeois, secular intelligentsia impelled it into struggle with Jerusalem, and it extended its hand to the revolt against theocracy raised by the common people. It took the Messiah and his crucifixion from the hands of the common people and surrounded him with the halo of all its learning. Yes, the great prophet Jesus, rather than the high priests or the Temple! He is above the high priest and the Levites; he is “a high priest after the order of Melchizedek,” [cf. Heb. 6:20; Heb. 5:10] appointed forever by God himself. We no longer need Levites! He is above the Temple; he himself is the radiance of God’s glory. He has offered the redemptive sacrifice once and for all: we no longer need ritual. And to strengthen their secular high priest, whose priests henceforth will be people free in spirit, they raise him high above Moses and merge the idea of the Messiah with the idea of the Logos, in order to deify the source of the new faith, free of official doctors of the law, without shocking the deeply rooted belief in one God. The One God is the source of both the old and the new covenant; but there he spoke through prophets, here through the being nearest to him, through his Son, his hypostasis, the Logos. [cf. Heb. 3:3–6] The fiery Pharisee, wholly imbued with the idea of proclaiming the truth of universal salvation to every corner, and the ideologist of the intelligentsia of the Jewish diaspora, the enlightened aggadist, came together as well as could be imagined. Paul acknowledged in the Messiah, in Jesus, a supernatural being. And from that time these ideas took firmer root in him. The fundamental cosmic change brought about by Christ is proclaimed with great force in the Second Epistle to the Corinthians. Here it is said directly that the peculiarities and personal features of Jesus as such are wholly unimportant; it is the mystical aspect of his being that matters: “Christ died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died for them and rose again. Therefore from now on we know no one according to the flesh; even if we have known Christ according to the flesh, we no longer know him in that way. Thus whoever is in Christ is a new creation; the old has passed away, now all is new” [2 Cor. 5:15–17] (2 Corinthians, chapter 5, verses 15, 16, 17).[E12] In the Epistle to the Romans, that great compendium of the whole of middle-period Paulinism, there is talk of eternal life

I, 1, 2, 3, 4).

in the Lord Christ Jesus, of Christ’s being raised by God and other human beings by Christ. In the wonderful ending of chapter 8 (Romans), the Son of God is exalted above the angels. Yet even here Paul does not reach the open proclamation of pre-existence, the generation of the Word before all ages, preached by Apollos. Paul knows this teaching, agrees with it, and has inwardly accepted it, but seems not to dare proclaim it officially. Paul’s decisive proclamation of this dogma occurred only in the Roman period of his activity. Only as an old man, in his circular epistles, the so-called Epistles to the Ephesians and Colossians, does Paul affirm Christ’s primordial divinity. Many question the authenticity of these epistles. But even if they were written by Paul’s closest disciples, his spirit lives in them, and it can be asserted that in that case the disciples expressed openly and in writing what the master taught orally within a circle of the elect. The Epistle to the Philippians is less disputed, but there too we encounter a fairly definite indication of Christ’s original equality with God: “He, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal to God” [Phil. 2:6] (2:6). Of course, the beginning of the Epistle to the Ephesians goes further and is rightly regarded as a beginning of Gnosticism: “Since He chose us in Him before the creation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons unto Himself through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He has bestowed grace upon us in the Beloved, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins according to the riches of His grace, which He has bestowed upon us in abundance in all wisdom and understanding, having disclosed to us the mystery of His will according to His good pleasure, which He had previously purposed in Him, in the ordering of the fullness of time, to unite all things in heaven and on earth under Christ as their head” [Eph. 1:4–10] (Ephesians, chapter 1, verses 4–10). Such views involuntarily led further and further, and the already mysterious fact of redemption became still more mysterious. Using Psalm 67, with the uncritical attitude usual for that time, Paul or his disciple directly reveals the mystery of existence before all ages: “Therefore it is said: ascending on high, he led captivity captive and gave gifts to human beings”[E13] (Psalm 67:19). [Eph. 4:8] And what does “ascending” mean, if not that He had first also descended into the lower regions of the earth? [Eph. 4:9] “He who descended is also He who ascended above all the heavens, that He might fill all things” (Ephesians, chapter 4, verses 8, 9, 10). [Eph. 4:10] Thus Paul’s Christology grew: from the conception of Jesus as a human being who redeemed us through his merits, to the conception of an emanation of God, a radiation from him, which at the appointed time accomplished a great moral and cosmic revolution. There is no abyss here. There is only a steady magnification of the role of the divine principle and a steady striving to abase human nature, to deny it any role, any merit. Was this progress? The exaltation of Jesus created an enormous power of attraction for the new religion. Here was a God who won people over by his goodness and humanity, yet who was of course all the more worthy of worship the greater a god he was acknowledged to be. But then the mystical and heavenly aspect of Christ could henceforth obscure his democratic, earthly aspect. This made him acceptable to the upper classes, but could take him away from the lower ones. The struggle between the earthly and heavenly images of Christ forms the content of the struggle between Gnostics and millenarians.

Salvation by Faith Alone. Paul also came together with Apollos in a wholly negative attitude toward the old law, in proclaiming its end and the advent of “freedom.” Their motives were different. For Apollos it was important to strike a blow against the Jerusalem theocracy. Paul, first, because of his idealism combined with contempt for the flesh, could not acknowledge the flesh’s efforts to purify itself by works of the flesh as having any value whatsoever. Second, the demands of Christians faithful to the “law” stood across the path of his enthusiastic striving to proclaim his truth over the face of the whole earth. In him the intensity of ecstasy and faith truly passed over into boundless expansiveness. [cf. Gal. 2:1–14] We shall not dwell on Paul’s struggle with Christ’s disciples. This fact is now acknowledged by everyone and has been precisely reconstructed. Paul himself described this struggle in fairly great detail and with frankness in the Epistle to the Galatians. The struggle was fierce, conducted in quite a different spirit from the one in which the conciliator Luke portrays it. Several times Paul wrested from the Jerusalem Ebionites recognition of his apostolic dignity in exchange for tribute paid by the churches he had founded to the mother church. But then intrigues arose again. The Jews hated Paul, the enemy of circumcision, and in this respect the Jerusalem Christians differed little from them. This hostility eventually delivered Paul into the hands of the Roman authorities as a dangerous innovator and troublemaker. James’s emissaries also tried to destroy Paul’s work, appearing in the churches he had founded and, in the authoritative name of the true disciples and apostles, anathematizing him and refuting his teaching. Their victory would have meant the death of Christianity, its contraction to the status of a sect of Judaism. [cf. Gal. 2:1–14] But this victory was impossible. It was not only that the Jews of the diaspora were too predisposed to emancipation from the Jerusalem elite. Above all, the pagan proletariat itself was too well prepared to receive a messianism freed from alien rites. Of course the Ebionites were democrats. They were even more radical representatives of the lumpenproletariat, more consistent communists than Paul, more revolutionary. But they could not understand that these ideas would acquire their true sweep only with the destruction of the old nationalistic confines. Paul, by virtue of his very mystical exaltation, was an opportunist socially. In many respects he expressed the moral ideals of the more prosperous strata of artisans and merchants of Macedonia. Yet he was mighty precisely in his internationalism. The very idea of justification by faith alone is, in one of its aspects, extremely revolutionary. At a single stroke it destroys the privilege of the noble and wealthy, for whom “good works,” that is, sacrifices, charity, services to the church, and the like, are easier and more accessible. It also shatters the crust of blind, inveterate, dry ritualism. It proclaims freedom and spirituality. This was the role the idea played later too, for example in the hands of Luther and the Reformers. But it also had its profoundly negative side, vividly manifested subsequently in Augustine’s teaching: it made humanity absolutely passive before God. Future sonship was purchased at the price of the greatest slavery in the present. It is difficult to imagine a more profound expression of a spirit of unquestioning servility than the one we encounter in Paul’s Epistle to the Romans, in that very Paul who proclaimed freedom from the law: “Mercy depends neither on the one who wills nor on the one who strives, but on God who shows mercy.... Whomever He wills, He has mercy on; and whomever He wills, He hardens. You will say to me: why does He still blame us? For who will resist His will? [Rom. 9:16, 18–19] Author’s footnote : In Acts.

But who are you, a human being, to dispute with God? Will the thing made say to its maker: why did you make me this way? Does not the potter have authority over the clay, to make from the same mass one vessel for honorable use and another for lowly use?” [Rom. 9:20–21] This passage is the foundation of Augustinianism, which finds admirers to this very day, even among Russian professors of the idealist-Cadet persuasion. The Morality of Paul and the First Christians. Paul’s morality had as its foundation a double dualism: of body and soul, and of the pre-Christian human being and the human being after the Gospel. Everything fleshly is bad; everything spiritual is good. But in itself the flesh is stronger than the spirit. God’s law is given to curb the flesh and aid the spirit; yet even the spirit is unable to fulfill all the law’s demands. The flesh still proves stronger, and thus the law proves to be a source of sin, transgression, and a sick conscience. But Christ brought liberation from the flesh. The new flesh will be purely spiritual: “A natural body is sown; a spiritual body rises.” [1 Cor. 15:44] Complete harmony will be attained, the law will cease to exist, and freedom and love will reign. All these are most profound conceptions. The torments of conscience, the consciousness of human sinfulness, are so terribly strong in Paul, who in this respect represents the greater half of humanity, that the very acuteness of this pain compels him to seek a way out and seize upon one: so greatly does humanity thirst for freedom and purity. Christ voluntarily crucified the flesh, although he was without sin. It remains for us likewise to crucify our flesh, that is, to suppress it within ourselves. And this is possible already. It is possible because our spirit is supported in the struggle by the Holy Spirit left by Christ, namely by our certainty of the world’s imminent renewal. Then, at the sound of the archangel’s trumpet,[E14] all will change; we ourselves will change in the twinkling of an eye, and a wondrous, harmonious life will begin, bright and joyful through and through. [cf. 1 Thess. 4:16] [cf. Gal. 5:24] For the present we must live in expectation. The law has already lost its force. We are already free. There is already no sin. Does this mean that we have the right to do evil? Certain extreme sects of Paulicians drew this conclusion from the freedom they had received. Paul rises furiously against it: we cannot live according to the flesh; already now we must live in Christ, a lofty, pure life. That life alone is proof of our freedom, for we are free from the law only because we have crucified our flesh! We are already pure spirits, only temporarily retaining our shell, which Christ has conquered. [cf. Rom. 6:1–2; Rom. 6:15] [cf. 1 Thess. 4:16] [cf. Gal. 5:24] But how should this temporary life take shape? The new Christian manner of living reached its highest originality among the wholly propertyless, nonworking, destitute proletariat, which, as we have already seen, developed a distinctive communism. The renunciation of earthly greatness, the hatred of the charms of wealth and dominion, are self-evident here. But here too a negative attitude developed toward all labor, as an earthly concern. Here there developed, on the one hand, asceticism reaching the point of self-torment and, on the other, unbridled sensuality, orgiasm cloaking itself in religious ecstasy and considerations of the freedom bestowed by redemption. Paul struggled against all the extremes of the Christianity of the poorest and preached diligence, strict morals, honesty, moderation in everything, an orderly life of petty-bourgeois virtue. As a transitional condition, of course. Paul himself took great pride in being an artisan and living exclusively by the labor of his own hands. His favorite churches were the Macedonian ones, recruited almost exclusively from the stratum now commonly called the petty bourgeoisie. These facts explain Paul’s striking closeness

to the Christianity of the Reformation, that preeminently petty-bourgeois Christianity. In characterizing Paul’s Macedonian churches, Renan enthusiastically brings out their peaceful virtues, which correspond perfectly to their petty-bourgeois character. If mutual aid is spoken of here, it certainly did not extend to communism. Neither the ecstatic fervor characteristic of other churches nor their sharpened hatred of the authorities and the rich was apparent. A kind of idyll of good neighborliness and quiet expectation predominates. As for the moral level of the primitive church in general, in this respect the usual conception of the holiness of the first Christians must be regarded as one-sided and exaggerated. Renan himself, inclined to exalt the gentle and loving manners of the first-century churches, notes, yielding to the force of authentic documentary evidence, that is, Paul’s denunciations, much that is doubtful in these manners. Thus he says: [cf. 1 Cor. 11:5–6; 1 Cor. 14:26–33] “Bad habits began to penetrate within the walls of the churches and corrupt their morals. The absolute Jewish laws concerning marital relations were violated. Paul is passionately indignant over the fact that someone was openly living with his mother-in-law. [1 Cor. 5:1][E15] Many were full of vanity, a frivolous love of disputes and quarrels. Even the Holy Spirit, glossolalia (the gift of speaking in unintelligible tongues), prophecy, and miracle-working degenerated into repellent scenes. There were mutual jibes and jealousy; inspired persons of different categories constantly interrupted one another. This gave rise to a strange disorder at the meetings. Women grew bold and demanded equality with men. They prayed fervently and prophesied, having cast off their veils and let down their long hair, making the whole gathering a witness to their ecstasies, their languorous raptures, and their pious self-abandonment.” [cf. 1 Cor. 11:5–6; 1 Cor. 14:26–33] Renan attributes such manners to the Corinthian church alone, but they soon undoubtedly spread everywhere. Pfleiderer says of this: “Inspired sermons on sin, hell, grace, and bliss made an extraordinarily strong impression on the listeners. Conversions took place amid convulsions and gestures, sobbing and laughter, jubilation and moaning.” The picture of a hysterical fit is complete. Hysteria reigned among the Christians. The hystero-epileptic condition of their organisms explains much of the excessive and wild behavior that took place all the time. But alongside it, of course, there also lived a beautiful tenderness of feeling, a beautiful sense of brotherhood. Everything together acted with the force of psychic contagion, drawing in even people of the upper class, especially women, through the opportunity to experience moments of acute nervous tension. The morbid enjoyment of manic excitement, of hypnotic intoxication amid a mass of one’s fellows; the ecstasies of prayer reaching the point of hallucinations; self-abasement reaching the point of public repentance and public self-torment; brotherly love passing over into a concealed and therefore all the more burning eroticism: such were the real blessings the church bestowed upon aristocratic snobs in exchange for rich donations. To the destitute, however, it gave food, humane treatment, and the pride of being chosen by virtue of their very wretchedness. These features naturally played a greater role than that quiet and tenderly peaceful temper usually brought to the foreground. Of course such types were also to be found. We have no need to dwell specifically once again on Paul’s social opportunism, on his antirevolutionary stance, on his sanctification of the institution of slavery and his preaching of obedience to the powers that be. Above we explained the psychological source of this temper, antirevolutionary by virtue of the very radicalism of its mystical revolutionism. Its social source was [Rom. 13:1]

perhaps the fact that Paul was to a greater degree the ideologist of the upper, industrious, modestly propertied, peaceful stratum of the democratic masses, rather than of their lower, idle, propertyless, passionately dreaming stratum. Petty-bourgeois Christianity and proletarian Christianity will wage a long struggle. But alongside them there will also appear aristocratic Christianity, which soon withered, it is true, but tries to revive, and ecclesiastical Christianity par excellence, the ideology of a new class created by Christianity itself: the clergy.
