The Apocalypse and Its Spirit The communist spirit of original, popular Christianity is beyond doubt. We also see that it was a profoundly ascetic communism confined entirely to consumption. Was it revolutionary? Yes, certainly. In its rejection of the whole cultural world of that time, its radical, merciless rejection, and in its opposition to that world of entirely new forms of life, it is revolutionary. Any ideology that sincerely reflects the mood of the oppressed masses cannot fail to be revolutionary at its core. But Christianity was passive. Non-resistance to evil is indeed inherent in it. It was the result of utter despair, arising in some places from an understanding of the disproportion between the “two swords” at the people's disposal [cf. Luke 22:36–38] and the iron legions guarding Rome's “order”; in others it was explained by the experience of the collapse of a whole succession of desperate attempts at revolt. Nevertheless, Christ has two faces. As a communist, as the teacher of humble wisdom, of a full and sorrowless life in God, in straightforward faith in the existence of a supreme goodness that directs everything toward the good, he is a model of gentleness and forgiveness of all. As a denouncer of the prevailing order, as the bearer of
the vengeance that has seethed in the people's hearts, he is terrible and dark. He is a great reviler; he is ready to wield whips, [cf. John 2:15] and his threats are full of wild imaginings. The powerless people bequeathed its vengeance to its all-powerful protector, God. Even the pictures of the triumph of the righteous, the radiant pictures of the Kingdom of Heaven, pale before the overwhelming pictures of God's wrath. In this aspect too, as in its other aspects, the Gospel continues the tradition of the Old Testament prophets. Originally the Christian community knew how to harmonize its hatred with its abundance of love, its thirst for vengeance with its passivity. A person must be humble and passive. The wrongs done to him will be reckoned up; on that day the Great Avenger will know how to avenge him cruelly. As the years went by, the hope of the imminent, righteous, and terrible Judgment of the Risen One grew fainter in people's hearts, and the original harmony broke apart more and more. Some took the path of peace. They said that humility contained the whole essence of Christianity, that the authorities, that is, the entire order of the state, were of God. [Rom. 13:1] They denied the legitimacy of hatred, even concealed hatred; they replaced the Last Judgment with recompense beyond the grave. And recompense ceased to be punishment for the rich and noble for their happiness on earth, sustained at others' expense, and a reward to the poor man for his poverty. It became reward and punishment for services to the Church or blasphemy against it. “Righteous” emperors appeared, vicars of Christ, magnificent popes. There appeared sinners among the poor who had dared demand that gilded bishops directly emulate the apostles who renounced wealth. Whoever patiently bears the yoke of the prince of this world, [cf. John 12:31; John 14:30; John 16:11] not only for fear but also for conscience's sake, [cf. Rom. 13:5] is now righteous; the critic and the rebel, even when acting in Christ's authentic name and words, is accursed and goes to hell. Naturally, under these conditions the Gospel's apocalyptic face also became sharper and more definite, in opposition to its blessed face. The most passionate and active section of Christians took the path of the sword. They deified their own righteous anger; their Christ became implacable and formidable. Terrible pictures of ultimate vengeance, of a fiery revolution purifying the world, became the most beloved and cherished. Through almost two millennia runs a fiery thread of people expecting the world's imminent conflagration. Usually they only wait and proclaim, because their hatred is strong but their souls are weak. Yet from here it is only a step to “striking with the sword.” The prophets regarded Asshur and Babylon as the executors of God's wrathful designs. The Church Fathers glorified the barbarians' victories over Rome as the acts of God's scourge. Why should the dispossessed in revolt not understand themselves as an instrument of God? This did happen. A whole succession of great revolutionary movements interpreted themselves in precisely this way. But the socialist mystics, the genuine heirs of the Gospel's spirit, were seldom strong enough to wage their own revolutionary struggle, and to do so under the banner of their communism. The Peasant Wars in Germany and the English Revolution, the greatest of these popular movements clothed in religion, were uprisings of small property owners, who naturally found their ideology in the democratic Bible of small property ownership rather than in the communist, proletarian Gospel. The Apocalypse, however, was highly esteemed by the Puritans. The Apocalypse of John is the highest poetic expression of the aspirations of the most revolutionary section of those who believe in Christ. Recently the Apocalypse has occasioned much discussion owing to Mr. Nikolai Morozov's curious interpretation of it. The method Morozov employs is very interesting. It is quite probable that much in the Book of Author’s note 1: Kautsky, in his book Judaism and Christianity, arrived at approximately the same conclusion.
Revelation really does represent a horoscope expressed in symbols. It is clear that thunderstorm and tempest gave the Christian poet their colors. Nevertheless, the redating of the book's composition to the fourth century on the basis of astronomical calculations cannot be regarded as proved. There is very substantial evidence that the book was known earlier. Thanks to careful philological and historical criticism of the text, it may be considered established that this book is a work of compilation. Its basis is very ancient; some believe it is not even Christian. The results of historical criticism can be summarized in Martin's words: “The book's underlying Jewish text belongs partly to the fanatical period of the First Jewish War (AD 66–70), partly to a time some eight years later. Its Christian alterations betray two editors: one from Domitian's time, responsible for twenty-nine interpolations relating to the ‘Lamb,’ and another from Hadrian's time, responsible for the letters to the churches, as well as for the book's introduction and conclusion. Thus the book could not have appeared before the year 136, that is, considerably later than the apostolic period.” In the same Martin we also find a criticism of the Book of Revelation which by no means persuades us that the Christians who enthusiastically welcomed this brilliant anthology of revolutionary mysticism were bad Christians, but which vividly demonstrates how different Christ's two faces were from one another: “How strange that we could have thought it possible that a man who personally assisted Jesus' ministry could write or publish a book describing the Messiah's ferocious battles, in which he enters combat with a sword, in bloody garments, with all-consuming flame and an iron rod as his emblems, leads a warlike procession, and sheds torrents of blood in depicting the horrors of God's wrath; and, mixing into this a speculative doctrine of Christ in the spirit of the second century, never once mention the life of Jesus himself, cite a single word of his, a single feature of his image, or once look back to the slopes of the Galilean hills, the courtyards of Jerusalem, or the road to Bethany, upon which the dear image of our Teacher has been imprinted forever.” But let Mr. Martin read chapter 21 of the Gospel according to Luke [cf. Luke 21:1–38] a little more attentively. Is this not the very same spirit? The revolutionary and democratic spirit of the entire compilation is beyond doubt. It is steeped in hatred of the world of the masters. The end of chapter 19 sounds like a solemn chord: “And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse; and he who sat upon it is called Faithful and True, who judges and makes war in righteousness. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and upon his head are many diadems. He has a name written which no one knows except himself. He was clothed in a garment stained with blood. His name is the Word of God. And the armies of heaven followed him on white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword, with which to strike the nations; he rules them with a rod of iron; he treads the winepress of the wine of the fury and wrath of God Almighty. On his garment and on his thigh is written the name: King of Kings and Lord of Lords. And I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out in a loud voice, saying to all the birds flying in mid-heaven: Fly, gather together for the great supper of God, to devour the corpses of kings, the corpses of mighty men, the corpses of commanders of thousands,[E31] the corpses of horses and their riders, the corpses of all, free and slave, small and great.” [Rev. 19:11–18] Mr. Morozov attributes the Apocalypse to John Chrysostom. Author’s note 1: We have purely Jewish apocalypses in the canonical book of the prophet Daniel (Pseudo-Daniel, of course) and in the non-canonical but very popular Book of Enoch.
Apparently this is no more than an attractive but shaky hypothesis. At best, Chrysostom might be acknowledged as the compilation's last editor. But in spirit the great archbishop could have been the author of a work of this kind. A whole succession of great Church Fathers of the East, and to some extent of the West too, Ambrose of Milan, for example, represented popular Christianity and fought energetically against its transformation into an instrument of exploitation. Precisely the most gifted men, who entered the clergy not for a career and the acquisition of wealth but from ideal motives, could not fail to feel the beauty and power of genuine, original proletarian Christianity, ascetic and communist. A long series of quotations from Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John could be given here, but we shall confine ourselves to a single argument of John Chrysostom's: “Grace was upon the first Christians, [Acts 4:33][E32] for there was no one in need; that is, because they gave so zealously that no one remained poor. [cf. Acts 2:44; Acts 4:32; Acts 4:34–35] They did not give only one part, keeping another for themselves, nor did they give as though it were their own property. They abolished inequality and lived in abundance; and they did this in the most praiseworthy manner. They did not presume to put their gifts into the hands of those in need, nor did they give with haughty condescension, but brought their gifts to the apostles' feet. [cf. Acts 2:44; Acts 4:32; Acts 4:34–35] Everything needed was then taken from the community's stores, rather than from private property. Those who gave could not become proud. If we now did the same, all of us, rich and poor, would live far more happily. The rich would benefit from this just as much as the poor.” There follows an approximate calculation according to which, by pooling all the property of the inhabitants of Byzantium, three million pounds of gold could be gathered and used to feed everyone in common: “Do you think the treasury could ever be exhausted? And would not God's grace descend upon us a thousandfold more abundantly? Would we not turn the earth into paradise? If among three or five thousand people (the first Christians) [Acts 2:41; Acts 4:4] this gave such brilliant results and none of them suffered want, how much better must it succeed in so vast a multitude! After all, each new arrival will add something to our wealth.” Commenting on this remarkable sermon, Kautsky says: “Chrysostom tries to win his listeners over to communism by proving to them with figures how much more economical a common household is than fragmentation into many households. But Chrysostom says not a word about who is to produce everything needed for this communist household. In this sphere everything is to remain as before.” Be that as it may, Chrysostom had to suffer no little for his “demagogy.” The official Church, as we have already said, departed ever further from its course; from a church of the poor it turned into the principal mainstay of the established order. The Eternal Gospel Within the Church, the tendency to oppose apostolic Christianity to the doctrine and order of the state Church never died. The contradiction, indeed the opposition, between them was too evident; the class contradictions both of ancient society in its decadence and of medieval society were too powerful as well. In the twelfth century a heresy matured which summed up the spirit of all the communist heresies that had preceded it: this was the doctrine of the Third Gospel, formulated by Joachim of Fiore, an Italian abbot, and taken up by the “left-wing Franciscans,” who for a time gained ascendancy in the order under John of Parma, a disciple of St. Francis of Assisi. Franciscanism itself was profoundly anti-ecclesiastical in principle, despite all its sweet peaceableness.[E33]
Francis resolutely returned to Christ; or rather, he returned the Gospel to its author, the people, and reinterpreted the Christian ideal, long perverted, in the people's spirit. He himself in essence opposed apostolic Christianity to Catholicism. But he did this so “craftily,” so submissively, that the Church agreed to turn a blind eye to the “mendicant brethren.” The popes proved, of course, even craftier than Francis: they easily corrupted the order and turned it too into one more support of “order.” But the left-wing Franciscans, supported by the fraticelli, that is, poor laypeople, mostly artisans, who had attached themselves to the order, took Francis's communist precepts very seriously. And what was most characteristic of them was that they ceased to rely upon the Gospel, ceased to see in Christ's teaching the omega of wisdom and holiness. For them Christ was the forerunner of the final revelation, a new, eternal gospel, [cf. Rev. 14:6] the gospel of the spirit. Here John of Parma and the movement's greatest ideologist, Gerard of Borgo San Donnino, were assisted by the strange doctrine of the hermit and prophet of Fiore. Joachim's ideal was perfect monasticism, in no way different from the mendicant monasticism realized by Francis. But Joachim both desired and foretold the victory of this ideal over the whole of life, the absorption of life, of Church, state, commercial and industrial activity, of all culture, into the single ideal of sorrowless poverty. He wrote: “First there was a time when people served the flesh. Then came a time when people serve both flesh and spirit; it lasts to the present day. But quite another age is that in which people live for the spirit alone; its beginning falls within the period of St. Benedict's life.” Thus in Joachim himself we still see only a revolt against the Church in the name of Christ and the apostles. His promise, “the triumph of complete knowledge and perfect freedom,” is merely a repetition and a more concrete formulation of the millenarian expectations that had been smoldering continuously in Christian hearts. What is new here is chiefly the wholly hate-filled attitude toward the Church. It is not the world that is rejected in the Church's name, but precisely the Catholic Church, as the most evil thing in an evil world, the most poisonous thing in the realm of injustice. Joachim and his disciples preferred to the Church even such an enemy of it as Frederick II; they maintained that the Greek form of Christianity was, after all, superior to the Latin. They were ready to regard even the Muslims as an instrument of punishment worthy of God's hands. Apparently it was from fragments of Joachim's prophecies that Gerard of Borgo San Donnino compiled the Eternal Gospel. [cf. Rev. 14:6] But this belongs to the period after the death of Francis, who had partially realized the ideal of social equality, love, absolute poverty, and the triumph of the contemplative principle over the active. Many among the common people, intoxicated by the holiness of the figure of the saint of Assisi, compared him to a Christ who had come to bring true Christianity back to earth. But Francis had an extraordinarily gentle nature. He decisively avoided a clash with the Church, submitted to it, and thereby made his order a support of official Christianity. His disciples could not help going further. Between Francis's ideal, mendicant, contemplative Christianity and the splendid ecclesiasticism of popes, cardinals, and bishops lay an abyss. The right-wing Franciscans rapidly turned into idlers and deceivers. The left wing and the artisan people who held to it and sought justice muttered discontentedly. For a time the left-wing Franciscans triumphed under the fanatical ascetic John of Parma. Gerard then produced, by reworking Joachim, the fundamental book that expressed popular-Christian tendencies. This passionate nature overstepped the boundary. He left Christ to the Church. He deftly hinted that
Francis was greater than Jesus. Reworking the historical-philosophical constructions of the Book of Daniel, Apollos, Paul, Augustine, and others, he builds a grandiose scheme, pregnant with a rich future. In the beginning was the kingdom of the Father; it lasted four thousand years. This was the kingdom of a law that did not explain itself, issued categorical commands, and reigned implacably, harshly subjecting humanity to itself. This epoch ended with the appearance of the Son. The epoch of grace and faith began. The Gospel did not reveal the face of truth to people, but spoke in parables; much in it is obscure, incomprehensible to the mind. Faith is required of the half-seeing human being, a child's faith in what cannot yet be understood. Neither Jesus nor the apostles were perfect. Requiring faith and in return granting divine grace that heals and helps, they did not fully reveal the mystery of life either in their words or in their deeds. Hence the misunderstandings. Faith is unstable and easily clouded; grace does not shine equally for everyone. Christ's words and examples are unclear, susceptible to various interpretations. Look at what Christianity has become as a result. Can one look around, hear all the groaning of human anguish, see vice mocking God and seizing the reins of power in Christ's name, and say that Christ has saved humanity? By no means! But this time is drawing to a close. Powerful enemies, secular and of other faiths, will crush the Church, the chief obstacle to the triumph of justice. Joachim, the great prophet, announced the approach of God's third covenant, the last. In clear words, not veiled but entirely open, he taught the rules of perfect life, and the great son of man, Francis, gave an example in his own life. What, then, is the secret of the new life? The victory of contemplation over activity. One must cease desiring, striving, struggling, cease altogether, for every vanity, wealth, earthly love, words, power, torments a person; but blessed is the person who lives by contemplating God in all nature, in the stars of heaven and in the depths of his own heart. This is the kingdom of the Spirit. The Trinity is the prototype of the three stages by which human animality develops toward the purity of contemplation and peace. There is undoubtedly a supersession of ecclesiastical Christianity here, but there is no supersession of the very spirit of Christianity; it is purely formal and apparent. Christ, of course, cannot be set against the prophets, but only against the “old covenant” of the scribes and churchmen; the thought of the prophets merely developed further in Jewish Christianity. Likewise, the Eternal Gospel [cf. Rev. 14:6] was set against the Christianity of the scribes and churchmen, but restored the essence of proletarian Christianity, the basis of the doctrine of the originally ideal Christ, and in a form that was not so much purified as narrowed. The old millenarianism included a promise, brilliant with color, of more or less material blessedness and rejoicing; the “new heavens” shone, the “new earth” gave forth fragrance. The Eternal Gospel was faithful to the spirit of ascetic communism, but sought no renewal of life other than moral renewal. What the millenarians pictured as a preliminary righteousness in the interval before the solemn and dazzling Second Coming, bringing boundless happiness, became for the pure followers of the Eternal Gospel the essence, the true new life. There can be no doubt that the victory of this doctrine, so close to Buddhism, over culture, with all its injustice but also with all its living forces, would have led to a terrible calamity, to the collapse of progress. The culture of the Catholic Middle Ages in its forms belonging to the “masters” was a compromise between ascetic Christianity and economic progress, an ugly and motley compromise. Progress lay in the direction of the victory of life, that is, of economically progressive forces, over Christianity as a passive, superstitious, ascetic principle, and over the doctrines of the Church, which had made a subtle poison
out of this Christianity, furnishing it with a multitude of harmful admixtures. Secular society had to triumph definitively both over the “pure” custodians of the world-denying doctrine and over the murky mixtures of a clergy that had conquered the world by adapting itself to it and deceitfully adapting it to its own false Christ. In its content the Eternal Gospel [cf. Rev. 14:6] moved in the direction opposite to progress. Its triumph would have meant the victory of the “spiritual” over the “secular,” a victory not of the ruling clergy, which was already half secular, but of truly apostolic Christians. Gerard sought to move away from Christ, but only in order to come, through Francis, to a purified Christ. True, the Second Coming, that most authentic feature of genuinely popular and original Christianity, was apparently discarded; but after all this was still the poetry, the dreams, of the first Christians. Their “hygiene,” their already discovered, already tasted, unquestionable good, consisted in communism, love, indifference to worldly things, and the joys of an inward life contemplating God. All this, in its purest form, reminiscent of Pali Buddhism, was revived by the Eternal Gospel in response to the demands of the democracy of its own time. But while anti-progressive in essence, while a most genuine return in content, the Great Gospel was tremendously revolutionary in form. Not because it called for hatred of the Church. Though this was an important revolutionary feature, there was no new step in it. Rather, because a new movement forward was proclaimed, because the world was not acknowledged to be finished. The expectation of a Third Gospel, of the kingdom of the Spirit as an epoch of knowledge and freedom, signified a deep and fruitful dissatisfaction of minds and hearts. It was not only Gerard who died a martyr's death; his calculations, prophecies, and public appeals to various sovereigns to purify the world died with him. The very essence of his teaching, militant Franciscanism, died. But the ideas of the inevitable arrival of the epoch of the third covenant, of the inadequacy of Christ's gospel, of the Trinity as three stages of development, did not die. Kautsky establishes that this teaching became widespread and influenced Dolcino and even Müntzer.[E34] It is difficult to enumerate all the followers who through the centuries transmitted faith in the three kingdoms: of the Father, of the Son, and the coming kingdom of the Spirit, in knowledge and freedom. Dolcino and Müntzer, the two great heretics who “took the sword,” [cf. Matt. 26:52] and a long succession of medieval teachers, scholastics, and mystics repeated the hope for the renewal of religion; Lessing and the great idealists of Germany, Saint-Simon, the Polish Romantics, and our Russian imitators of them, down to D. S. Merezhkovsky, repeat the formula of the Eternal Gospel, await and predict the kingdom of the Spirit, which… still does not come. Or perhaps it arrives in part for the elect, as Heine thought. The content of the formula changed. We are now presented with the claim, as a piece of great wisdom, that the first kingdom was the kingdom of the flesh, the second of the spirit, and the third their union in harmony. But, first, this was stated with particular brilliance and depth by Hegel; and second, such a synthesis has in essence always been realized. Modern Christianity, as Rozanov rightly says, is precisely a synthesis of Christ's pure spirituality with worldly joy and triumphant corporeality. Of course, syntheses may differ, being more or less elevated and harmonious; the bare course of playing with antitheses and syntheses leads to nothing positive in this case. Lessing stood closer to Gerard: like the latter, he conceived the kingdom of the Spirit as the kingdom of knowledge and freedom. But for Gerard, knowledge meant knowing the futility of all activity, and freedom came down to liberation from all activity. For Lessing it was an eternal, insatiable thirst for an ever-growing, ever-brighter truth, the beautiful freedom of the individual from external fetters,
possible only on the basis of human brotherhood and equal rights. If we insist on fitting humanity's development into periods, then the most plausible thing to say is that from time immemorial there have lived within humanity a thirst for justice, that is, for harmony in relations between human beings, and a thirst for power. Christianity, pure, genuine Christianity, was a complete human renunciation of the thirst for human power. Our anti-Christian principle would then be a pure thirst for power without a trace of concern for justice. This principle found clear theoretical expression even before Nietzsche, particularly interestingly in the speeches of Hippias in Plato's dialogue Protagoras. Historically it is the purely aristocratic principle. And the synthesis will be their fusion in the growth not of ideas alone, but of practical life, of an actual economic transformation based upon the truth that justice is possible only on the basis of power, and, from a certain point onward, the growth of power only on the basis of justice. The Eternal Gospel [cf. Rev. 14:6] called for the universal spiritualization of life through an ever more universal and radical flight from matter. Be that as it may, the Eternal Gospel is great not for its answer, but for its question: it registered humanity's expectation, and no longer an expectation of the fulfillment of the gospel's promises, but of a new gospel. Since then new doctrines have sought to take the place prepared in advance. How many there have been, and how many there will yet be! For, as in those days, many fail to see that the new Gospel has now already arrived. In its synthesis it embraces and raises up not only the contradictions of paganism and Christianity, body and spirit, but also the contradictions of the individual and freedom, and much else. The spirit cannot be fitted into simple constructions. The exertions of latter-day epigones, seekers of the Great Gospel such as our Merezhkovsky, are insignificant, like smoky lamps before a sun that has already risen. We have mentioned Dolcino and Müntzer. We shall not describe the vicissitudes of heretical communism. We refer the reader to the appropriate chapters of Kautsky's History of Socialism. But we must note an important feature in these two heroes of heretical communism. A punishing, avenging deity is characteristic chiefly of the Old Testament. Yet Christ too has its features in the prophecies of the Second Coming. Small property owners, who always tended to find their ideology in the Old Testament portions of the Bible, did not go as far as communism in their social programs and aspirations. They often had enough revolutionary energy for serious action, even victorious action, as in seventeenth-century England; but neither their victories nor their defeats could change anything essential in the foundations of petty-bourgeois culture, that is, the culture of small property ownership. Small property inevitably engenders the rise of some small proprietors and the fall of others, and petty-bourgeois idealism, egalitarianism, is incapable of changing anything radically, incapable of curing the fundamental disease of human culture. The communists, however, the representatives of the proletariat, sought their ideology in the Gospel, and most often in its humbly wise, peace-yearning aspect. The Gospel's charm was, of course, enormously enhanced in their eyes by the promises of vengeance and victory included in it and developed in the Apocalypse; but vengeance and victory remained the business of the “Heavenly Father”: “Vengeance is his; he will repay.” [cf. Rom. 12:19; Heb. 10:30] Only occasionally, and usually because it was possible to unite the proletariat's communist aspirations with the peasants' revolutionary movement, was an actively revolutionary Christianity born. The communists, transfigured by enthusiasm, gripped by burning fanaticism, took the lead and with astonishing, self-sacrificing heroism fought to the last drop of blood for Christ's victory, that is, for the communist community
on earth. Christ's formidable face then hovered over their ranks, doomed to death. Had they won, the results would have been appalling, for no anarchist in the world could have consigned all aristocratic culture to fire and destruction with so profound a conviction of his own rightness, although that culture is a necessary stage in the development of a culture for all humanity. All or nothing! Justice must reign! The bonfire of the vanities kindled by Savonarola is but a shadow of the conflagration to which the Christian revolutionary was ready to consign the world. A cosmic upheaval, the Second Coming, the purification of earth and heaven by fire: these are the pictures hovering before him; and, sensing and acknowledging himself as the instrument of Jesus descending from heaven, of Christ coming a second time, he would have astonished the world with his genius for destruction. But he could not win. Fortunately. For justice triumphant before its time means the death of hope for true justice; the justice of universal poverty and wretchedness in Christ means the death also of the justice of universal wealth and wisdom in the true Holy Spirit, toward which humanity is moving.[E35] But even had they won, after a halt like those that have always followed barbarian invasions in civilization, the shoots of life would have risen again. The great process of humanity's struggle with nature would once more have gone its way, necessarily through the same social differentiation and concentration of wealth, for no other road to victory lay before humanity. Christian communism is harmful not only because of its ascetic tendencies, but chiefly because of its ahistorical character: the Christian who believes in miracles considers the advent of justice on earth possible at any moment; the stages of human construction on earth do not concern him. Precisely because of this detachment from the real economic process, the Christian revolutionary could dream of the joys of the millennial kingdom only as a gift from heaven. Once he becomes even something of a realist, intending to establish a just order on earth himself, he inevitably becomes an ascetic hostile to culture. All utopian revolutionaries, believers in miracles, have much in common. The “forerunner of the Antichrist,” Leonid Andreyev's Savva with his “healing dynamite,” is, in the essence of his teaching and in his methods, the blood brother of the Christian dreaming apocalyptic dreams. Much also brings this man of violence close to the non-resister Tolstoy: alike they condemn culture to destruction in the name of justice, alike they are ready to sacrifice even humanity itself for justice. Yet it is only that same bitter, absurd, tormenting culture that saves us. It devours, it crushes, but it alone will save. We must understand this terrible yet still sweet truth. It is the tragic truth of our history. The Latest Christian Socialism The latest Christian socialism has little in common with the heretical communism of the Middle Ages and the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In France and Italy, Catholic socialism, which at one time received something like an official blessing from Leo XIII, is an electoral maneuver by a Church backed against the wall. The Church is at odds with the republican government of France and with the Quirinal. The bourgeoisie is dispossessing it. The lower strata of the people are still full of superstition, but to consolidate its influence among them and induce the benighted masses to struggle for the Church's interests, it must, of course, tint its preaching with at least a faint color of love for the people and a thirst for social justice. Naturally, among the abbés who came forward preaching Catholic
democracy and socialism there were also sincere men, true children of that same democracy. But the higher clergy soon had to moderate their excessive zeal. Even for the best of them, Christianity always served as a hindrance rather than a help in their socialist development. Very rarely could they arrive at a clear understanding of the class struggle; they remained conciliators. Hardly anyone went beyond humane mediation between rich and poor, and whoever went further broke with the Church, and then with Christianity too. The Church has no wish whatever to carry its democracy so far as to quarrel seriously with the ruling classes. Recently even the most pitiful and pallid Christian socialism has been regarded with hostility by the new pope. In England Carlyle exerted a powerful influence on the advanced clergy. He vividly embodied a longing for the firm order of feudalism, idealized by distance in time, the longing of a man who was a victim of the soulless anarchy brought by the bourgeoisie, especially cruel to the point of ferocity in the first youthful years of triumphant capitalism, still unmoderated by the resistance of the organized proletariat. Dreaming of love, justice, order, the devotion of honest servants, the solicitude of virtuous masters, of a feudal-Christian morality of duty subordinating the individual to the whole, Carlyle and his spiritual followers, England's Christian socialists, knew how to criticize the evils of capitalism vigorously and vividly. But when they turned to positive constructions, they proved to be social and economic reactionaries and helpless utopians. In Germany Christian socialism expressed itself in perhaps its most interesting forms: official and conservative with Stöcker, conciliatory and patriotic-liberal with Naumann, right-wing social-democratic with Göhre, revolutionary with Kutter. The court chaplain Stöcker conceived the idea of wresting “our good German people” away from Social Democracy in Christ's name. His attempts ended in complete failure. To characterize his tendency, we shall give a short extract from his sermons: “We cannot promise you a socialist state as your agitators do, because it is unrealizable. But we know your want and your cares; and everything we can do, working together with you, to secure an improvement in your situation, we shall do honestly. And if the large workers' party once again lives at peace with the other classes, it will then be easier to help than it is now.” Naumann is more interesting. His criticism of Social Democracy is curious. “What,” says Naumann, “is Social Democracy's fundamental defect? That it is a doctrinaire, universal system. Social Democracy is Hegel's epigone, the daughter of the philosophy of the absolute. As such, it knows nothing of the living God or of the living people. It has replaced God with the development of technology, and the people with the proletariat: two concepts in place of two living forces.… Social Democracy is weak and poor in spirit. Despite its red colors, it has no blood; it is pale and inactive.… In place of bread it gives the people political-economic theory, that is, dogma. But dogmatists outlive their time. There are no eternal systems. And when theory is swept away, beneath it there will remain, as before, the old human heart, and it will demand its God.” What, then, is the Christian Socials' own program? Here is its essence: “We must think economic relations through precisely from the point where the Social Democrats leave them. They think about society as a whole; we must think about the separate parts of that society: the unemployed, day laborers, industrial workers, peasants,
artisans, merchants, officials; about each person in his separateness.”… “Christ is not a communist: he has no intention of tearing the Galilean fishermen away from their little boats and huts; [cf. Matt. 4:18–22; Luke 5:11] he rejects only an excess of property and teaches that all property belongs to God, and is merely entrusted to people for their use.… Christ wishes to lessen want, suffering, sin. To this end he works miracles and gives alms.” Pastor Göhre, originally Naumann's friend and comrade-in-arms, found within himself the strength to leave him, abandon his pastoral office, and join the ranks of the German Social Democratic Party. But here he naturally attached himself to its furthest right wing, adding himself to the number of its dubious elements. The highest form of Christian socialism is that set out in Pastor Kutter's extremely curious, fiery pamphlet They Must!, which has also been translated into Russian. We must dwell upon it in greater detail. Christian ideals contradict the established order of things to such a degree that a sincere Christian cannot fail to notice this and be filled with the greatest hatred and contempt for those supposed servants of Christ who try to use his name to uphold this manifestly anti-Christian social order. Kutter's book They Must! is not simply a daring pamphlet, but a kind of heroic deed, putting Pastor Kutter almost on a level with Ibsen's Pastor Brand. For he dared to state sharply, even heatedly, that the Social Democrats are at present the only true Christians, despite the fact that they deny both Christ and God. Strictly speaking, it was difficult to make up one's mind to voice this thought; arriving at it was not so difficult. The Social Democrats fight Mammon, [Matt. 6:24; Luke 16:13] the terrible prince of this world, [cf. John 12:31; John 14:30; John 16:11] who has corrupted and debased everything and engendered a sea of torment and calamities. They wage their struggle against him selflessly, to the point of martyrdom. Their ideal is the ideal of brotherhood, peace, and love. What does it matter what forms clothe this “conduct of life”? The essence lies in living deeds, and these are Christian. And this is true. True, because both original Christianity and scientific socialism are profoundly proletarian worldviews; that is why their ideals partly coincide. But in many respects they also diverge, because the modern proletariat is in many respects unlike the rabble of Palestine and the ancient Roman Empire. Anyone wishing to bring Christianity fully together with Social Democracy, and of course we mean only communist, popular Christianity, not the later “spiritual,” aristocratic Christianity, must either pass over in silence or fail to understand some of the most essential features of the ideology and practice of the modern proletariat, or impose upon Christianity elements foreign to it. Kutter does precisely this with complete sincerity and in all good faith. And however good his aims, however pure his soul, his book demonstrates better than anything else that in such a forced identification both Christianity and Social Democracy suffer. Kutter poorly understands the importance of Social Democracy's philosophical and sociological teaching; or rather, with the utmost sincerity he pretends to himself that he does not understand its importance, because it is consistently realist and acknowledges no other motive force, no source of actions, apart from the evolution of the “material universe,” that is, empirical reality. Author’s note 1: The Russian archimandrite Serapion Mashkin is reminiscent of Kutter; on him, see Morozov's article in the collection Literary Disintegration.
Kutter, however, cannot agree to this. Yes, humanity must realize justice in reality, in “matter”; he too recognizes this. But this justice has been given to humanity from above, as has the sense of duty commanding it to strive unswervingly for justice's victory. This transcendental moralism, infinitely dear to Kutter, is unnecessary to Social Democracy and cannot fit into its philosophy; for precisely this reason Kutter skirts it. Kutter says: “We have said it already and repeat it again: the issue is by no means Social Democracy's scientific theories. Was the issue how the first Christians conceived the new impulses of which they were the bearers? Did the great force moving them depend upon their weak, ill-defined dogmatics? ‘The spirit breathes where it wills, and you hear its voice, but do not know whence it comes or whither it goes.’ [cf. John 3:8] “And if at present the air is filled with words about the state of the future, the theory of surplus value, and so on, does this exhaust the principal task, the inner content of the Social Democratic movement? Its mission is to create the New; an astonishing and irresistible enthusiasm permeates it through and through. Is this not something far more significant? Let the Social Democratic theoreticians sit over their formulas! Anyone who in our day still believes that, for example, Marx's surplus value is the pulse of a new, raging force of the spirit does not know how world history moves, does not understand the hidden depths from which each new formation draws its creative forces.” So Kutter thinks. But if we look closely at the important new element present in Social Democracy and altogether absent from Christianity, we shall see that it is too essential to be brushed aside with a fine anti-dogmatic moralism. Christianity rejects culture; it calls for voluntary poverty and passive waiting for the kingdom of heaven. Even on moral ground the true Christian must struggle through passivity. To acknowledge material labor, the development of methods of labor and the growth of wealth, as of primary importance in the work of “redemption” is so foreign to Christianity that no bridge across this abyss is conceivable. Mammon! Mammon! [Matt. 6:24; Luke 16:13] But Kutter forgets that, in fighting capital, Social Democracy at the same time recognizes the path of capitalist development as the only conceivable one, the only one leading to “salvation.” And this is as important as anything could be. For outside this scientific analysis of the true paths of development there awaits us a boundless sea of utopian dreaming, sometimes inclined to place ethics above culture, which returns us to the wanderings of the past. In fact, Kutter himself has learned much from Social Democracy's “materialist dogma”: “God's plans are carried out through the transformation of matter,” he says; “the goal of God's path is corporeal existence.” Is this expression genuinely Christian? Let us grant that the chiliasts, the “crudest” of them, conceived the kingdom of God as a transfiguration of corporeal existence; but necessarily as a miraculous transfiguration, and by no means as an economic, historical transformation of the environment, and with it of the human being. Kutter has an excellent page in defense of the flesh. We shall quote it, because the question he discusses has also been interestingly raised in our “religious circles” by Mr. Rozanov. Kutter regards Christian spiritualism as hypocrisy: “You believe that matter has no significance. But God created man out of matter and spirit. [cf. Gen. 1:26–28; Gen. 2:7] You believe that you must strip matter from yourselves. But God clothed you and all people in it. You look toward heaven. God gave people the earth. [cf. Ps. 115:16] You create your own kingdom of the spirit for yourselves. God
breathed his Spirit into matter when he created man in his own image and likeness. [cf. Gen. 1:26–28; Gen. 2:7] “You struggle against God's law; you set your Christianity against his covenant of life. “It is clear that your Christianity must be hypocrisy. For it blocks God's way. The division between spirit and matter that it introduces dishonors him. Your kingdom of the spirit is the kingdom of a spiritual ideal, not God's kingdom. “Matter is not of the devil. Take comfort: love for it is not contemptible. Enjoyment of it is not sinful. Even its orgies are no more than humanity's reaction against the improper usurpation carried out by the spirit in forgetfulness of God. Matter is a stronghold of sin only insofar as humanity despises it.” But here there is an obvious substitution of God the Father, the God of the Old Testament, for Christ. The Christian Gnostics declared Jehovah a lower deity, the Demiurge, and even… Satan. The Logos came into the world to save the spirit from material captivity. True, Kutter may tell us that he throws out all Gnostic elements from Christianity and leaves only the chiliastic ones. But the flesh as it is is declared unclean, sinful, in need of purification by fire, everywhere and by all Christian teachers, even the bright utopian Irenaeus. Kutter does violence to Christianity, imposing pagan tendencies upon it. After reading the Gospel, can one really exclaim with Kutter: “Subdue the earth and fill it, [cf. Gen. 1:26–28; Gen. 2:7] for materialism is the cause, however weak souls may despise it; it is the path that will lead us once again out of the spirit's quagmires toward our primordial problem of life, toward our health, our happiness. Wherever material progress has come to a halt, there the well-being of the human soul has also been shaken.” No, this is not Christianity! Christ did not teach this. But let us not be seduced in general by the materialism of our fiery priest. In pursuit of it he has gone very far from the Christ of the first Christians, to say nothing of the Christ of Gnosticism and orthodoxy; yet he has by no means come close to Social Democracy. For Social Democracy, revolution is not an apocalyptic phenomenon, the intervention of the spirit, even in the form of a moral imperative impelling human wills, in the course of events of an economic order. It is not an act of the spirit as a separate principle altering the material process; it is only a form, one of the forms, of socioeconomic progress. Its essence lies in technological progress. New technology, a new degree of human mastery over nature, partly actual and partly potential, comes into conflict with obsolete state and legal norms and impels the new classes, grown in power, to break them, overcoming the resistance of decrepit classes interested in preserving them. The Christian is either a sworn enemy of violence, which condemns him to sheep-like peaceful renovation, or a defender of violence as the intervention of higher divine forces in the lower earthly life. Kutter neither summons nor acknowledges “angelic legions”; [cf. Matt. 26:53] he hopes for proletarian legions. But what moves them, for him, is God's absolute voice, trumpeting amid the roar of storms: all or nothing. Just listen to the romantic and mystical picture of Social Democracy our dear prophet makes for himself: “What does it want? In essence, it does not know this itself. Yes, it does not know! And this is precisely its advantage over other parties. They all know so well what they want! Ah, it is so easy to encompass the narrow horizon of one's own will. Only he who wants the immeasurable, the boundless, whose aspirations do not knock against barriers, who cannot fit his aims into words of prudence, possesses a real will. Behind such a will stands
the Living God! Did the ancient prophets know what they wanted when impelled by God's Spirit? Jeremiah sees with horror the fate awaiting him. Better for him to die than to live as he must live. But he must. [Cf. Jer. 20:7–9, 14–18][E36] And now the Social Democrats must. They bear within themselves a great, irresistible Duty. Where it leads they do not know. They have no need to know. Another knows.” With such romanticism, enthusiastically obeying the voice of Brand's God, who demands the realization of the boundless, one may plunge into an abyss, but it is difficult to build anything capable of standing! Kutter reduces all his Christianity to an elemental imperative, an impulse of the will toward the good, a blind, emotional, unreasoning impulse. He says: “Here is Christianity's new foundation. For Christians the good is not simply a law, but also a force. They have become imbued with its infinite reality. They live in the good. They are here for the good. For them it is no longer a law; it is their heartbeat, their element. They acknowledge nothing else any longer. To be good means for them to establish God's dominion on earth and in heaven. This is the wondrous simplicity that embraces them according to Christ's word.” “To live with God, obey him, surrender oneself to him,” the enthusiast repeats to us in rapture. Oh, how far we are from Marxism, imbued with enthusiasm but restrained by reason and thought, studying life strictly objectively, measuring every one of its steps against it, not so much struggling against elemental forces as illuminating and directing them, never setting itself any tasks except possible ones: “To believe in Christ means to say to sin: you must disappear, and to evil: you must fall. “To believe in Christ means to resist the forces hostile to him. “To believe in Christ means to have within oneself the living God, who comes and brings in his train the times of his justice. “To believe in Christ means to burn for right and against the denial of right. To drain suffering to the bottom, rather than coldly weighing and deliberating. It means to bear witness and cry out against evil. It means to make the impossible certain, the unattainable attainable, and what has never existed a present reality.” This is a very bright, blazing, but also blinding fanaticism that could cause incalculable harm both to culture and to its own bearers. Kutter-Brand! For him too, ultimately, obedience to the inner voice calling for a heroic deed is more important than accomplishing the work, than attaining the goal, as Plekhanov observed in Ibsen's Brand: “Christianity bears within itself absolute Duty, and we shall not hesitate, if necessary, to sacrifice to it the finest achievements of culture. It devalues, annihilates everything. Before its judgment, all good things seem indeed old and perishable. It does not concern itself with people's happiness in the narrow sense in which they themselves conceive it. It has one passionate demand: to create what ought to be.” This is terrible! For there is here absolutely no consciousness of what, precisely, ought to be! Here people reason in Christ's name exactly as Andreyev's Savva does in the Antichrist's name. This is romantic, fanatical anarchism, and by no means our socialism. And Kutter thunders: “Open the New Testament; on every page you will find revolution. The violent destruction of the old world is the fundamental tone.” The Apocalypse, Dolcino, Müntzer! A revolution of the absolute, a revolution of dreamers, the most terrible of all in its cruelty and the most useless! Is this the revolutionary character of Social Democracy, helping bring to completion, at an accelerated pace, the birth of the new world already carried to term within the old? We see that Kutter's “materialism” does not save him. He does not understand the process of humanity's growth and the coincidence, the identity, of this objective process with the subjective ideal of
advanced minds and the best hearts, with the subjective aspirations of the dispossessed section of society. Yet in this knowledge lie the strength and essence of scientific socialism. From our point of view, Kutter's sentimental revolutionism can only be harmful; it is the worst kind of utopianism, tolerable only so long as it does not seek to pass into action. And this harmful, fanatical character belongs to Kutter's socialism precisely because he clings firmly to his God. Who is Kutter's God? Do we need him? Is he not, on the contrary, harmful? For Kutter, God is the eternal idea of justice, the eternal, untamable movement toward the ideal, manifesting itself throughout the world, especially in human society: “For God it is immaterial where he finds people. Those who were called did not come to work; then he stretched out his hand to the atheists, and they took it. [Cf. Matt. 22:3–10; 21:28–32][E37] For he must move forward. The eternal postulates once again burst through the hard crust of time that has grown over them. Justice, love, brotherhood awaken. And if justice rises, must not the dust of vanity on its surface tremble? Hard rock trembles and breaks apart when the volcano reveals its hidden forces. How carefully modern society weaves the carpet of its well-being and covers with it the bare bones of the oppressed! But must it not tear when the demands of love gain force? Yes, the eternal postulates have been put forward again; the volcano of eternity is working once more. Already a muffled rumbling can be heard within. The surging masses are set in motion. Eternity burns and blazes; must not the rock of Mammon [Matt. 6:24; Luke 16:13] that we have piled upon it crack? In their fear they mutter: this is the greed of the mob, the accursed discontent of the masses, this is revolution and overthrow. But through this fear, through their unclean conscience, sounds the voice of the living God: I come to free my people from captivity. I shall lead them to springs of water, where they will quench their thirst; I shall wipe the dust from their brows [Adapted Rev. 7:16–17; cf. Isa. 49:9–10][E38] and release their limbs from Mammon's instruments of torture. I shall delay no longer. My justice has been profaned; my patience is exhausted. I shall strike those who have abused the dispossessed; I shall turn my violence upon those who have heaped acts of violence and injustice upon these little ones. For I am the Lord. This is revolution, but it is God who makes the revolution.” Thus God is duty, the striving for justice. But the question is: does this moral element manifest itself only in human actions, or can it manifest itself also through direct intervention, as the Apocalypse depicts it for us? Does it merely inspire the righteous and perform its work through their hands, or does it also command “legions of angels”? [cf. Matt. 26:53] Let us suppose that Kutter gave a more orthodox answer and said that God is by no means limited to the powers of a humanity pleasing to him, that “all things are possible to him.” [cf. Matt. 19:26; Mark 10:27; Mark 14:36] In that case we immediately become entangled in a whole succession of agonizing contradictions. Indeed, how far does God's power extend? A God who is not almighty, who is limited by some other force or law, ceases to be a sufficient guarantee of the victory of good and becomes psychologically unnecessary. There is no reason to postulate, besides the “divine in humanity,” that is, the striving for justice, enthusiasm, the voice of duty, a further transcendent force when that force is not absolute. Moreover, a God who is not absolutely powerful obviously cannot be certain of his victory and must therefore strain all his forces in the struggle against evil. If he has any reserves of heavenly hosts, we have the right to demand their aid in desperate moments of humanity's acute suffering. But God has always proved “long-suffering and abundantly merciful” [cf. Ps. 103:8; Exod. 34:6] toward evil. Human despair sustained faith in his power despite the evidence to the contrary; yet the heightened sense of one's own
human dignity cries out to God: “If you are strong, help! If you are strong and do not help, see the ‘tears of little children’ and do not help, then you are the devil. I renounce you, declare rebellion, and you will reconcile me with no sweet dessert.” And God replies: “My dear son, man pleasing to God, you were mistaken. I am not almighty; I strain all my forces in the struggle, but the enemy is strong. I see the tears of little children and weep myself. Pity your God as he pities you.” Thus one has to choose between an absolute God, but one incomprehensible to humanity and criminal in human eyes, and an all-good but limited god. In the first case there is only one way out: to declare that “the ways of the Lord are inscrutable,” [cf. Rom. 11:33] that he needs evil for some purpose. But if so, God ceases to be “goodness engaged in struggle” and becomes an incomprehensible sphinx, rising above our good and our evil. Evil too comes from him. For a person to whom understanding God's ways is already impossible, it is better “not to make a fuss,” as the Khokhols say, and merely repeat, “Thus it pleases God; such is God's will.” Kutter and his like-minded companions would not accept such a terrible outcome. Under the second supposition there is also a way out: to acknowledge as the divine force the world's tendency toward ever higher forms of life, to proclaim divine evolution as the one God. Evolution is the methodical building of the world. Some will say that God is the architect slowly constructing perfection out of an absolutely imperfect, chaotic material bordering on non-being. This would be a peculiar revival and modification of the Peripatetics' doctrine. Others will say that the living world builds itself, that a striving for perfection is immanently inherent in it, and that this is precisely the living god of the living world, its soul. There are no traces in Kutter of such an identification of the moral imperative with the law of evolution. The religion of evolution is apparently the last form of the religion of a god. When a god acting from outside is postulated, a Magnet of Good, a Positive Pole, and so on, a shadow of a personal deity still remains; with the second interpretation, immanent divinity, we arrive at pantheism. But even if Kutter resorted to one of these expedients, he would gain little. The “Positive Pole,” which by its power disturbed “matter,” “chaos,” “non-being,” producing in it that obscure, wave-like, mighty striving toward Light and Good which we call the world process or evolution, leaves us profoundly unsatisfied, for the question remains open. It is practically worthwhile to admit the existence, unprovable by science, of this extra-worldly Pole, this “Unmoved Mover,” only if the supposition gives an absolutely reassuring guarantee of the victory of good and definitively resolves the accursed questions. But a god who fully guarantees victory must be absolute. Humanly incomprehensible is this absolute god who organizes the world not by a single act of will, but over millions of eons and through an insanely tormenting process. All the artifices of James, for example, to combine omnipotence and struggle collapse. It is impossible. Omnipotence wins without struggle. Whoever struggles is not almighty. “Yes,” say the pragmatists, “but suppose God is not powerful enough to transform darkness into light at once, yet is strong enough to conquer it indubitably in time.” But we ask in our turn: what do we gain by supposing an unprovable transcendent god, if in practice he gives us only hope of victory? For confidence in his victory is backed only by the desire to be confident; the facts that can be adduced as proof of his power all Author’s note 1: Strictly speaking, despite the presence of a deity, what we have here is an anti-religious worldview.
have an empirical character immanent to the world. In short, the evolutionists' transcendent god entangles us in exactly the same way as any transcendent God-as-Good. An immanent god is another matter. Kutter could indeed renounce a transcendent deity and tell us that the god who creates the world, manifesting himself in the evolution of the forms of being, also manifests himself in the moral imperative: “Struggle for justice.” But in that case god is merely a metaphor, a symbol of real phenomena. Here there is no God outside the phenomena! God is precisely the totality of cosmic facts of progressive significance, the totality of all the world's good phenomena and human impulses. That we generalize these facts and give them one “name,” God, adds nothing to the weight of the facts. Only scholastic “realism” can try, within a pantheistic, immanent worldview, still to single out God and worship him. His living body is facts, phenomena, deeds. Outside them he does not exist. In essence, if Kutter, like the modern pragmatists, took this step, he would turn out to be an atheist. He would, of course, acknowledge evil and good and their struggle; but these would be only evil and good in human eyes. The struggle would become a process of harmonizing forces, a complex process of labor, but an entirely positive process. Having taken this step, Kutter would cease to be a theologian, a Christian, and become entirely a “secularist” and “freethinker.” Yet by remaining a theologian, gaining nothing, as I have tried to show, and becoming entangled in all the contradictions of theology, he very harmfully distorts the actual picture of progress. Social Democracy by no means demands blind enthusiasm; on the contrary, it demands the soberest and most thorough deliberation. It knows that the “giant of eternity begins to work” not of itself and for unknown reasons, but by virtue of economic causes that must be studied. Scientific socialism says with confidence where fighters “for justice” will be found, where its natural enemies are, when there are chances of victory, what precisely in the general plan is realizable at a given moment, and so on and so forth. With Kutter, however, it turns out that it is superfluous for a person to know where he is going and what obstacle he will encounter. His god cries out that his patience is exhausted, that right now he will punish the wicked and exalt the righteous, for he is the Lord! And to this provocative music, hoping for the Almighty's aid, the poor rise up, driven only by the voice of inspiration and indignation, and dash their heads against a wall. Even if they won, what would they undertake? Trusting in God, would they trouble themselves about an exact program of action? Yet God would give no help! Legions of angels would not appear during the battle, [cf. Matt. 26:53] nor come to assist in erecting the new order. “God, you have deceived us! When will you support us in our distress?” “What? Did I not give you enthusiasm, thunder in your soul, ceaselessly demand justice through the mouth of your conscience?” “You have deceived us, for if anything has been done, it has been done by these very hearts and these very hands. Do not appropriate to yourself what lived in me in anguish. But where were you? Where is what is yours?” Whoever exalts the “inner voice” into God, supposing that a God who knows how to speak eloquently to the heart also knows how to help in deeds… will be disappointed. For the “voice” is the voice of human self-consciousness… and nothing more. Kutter's Christian socialism is the highest form of the revolutionism of the old religion. But even if we correct and supplement Kutter according to the suggestions of James, Le Roy, Bergson, Loisy, and others, we shall still conclude that this socialism, by discarding certain elements of scientific socialism, puts out its own eyes, its knowing, observing
eyes, cripples its careful feet, friendly with solid ground, and, by introducing certain new elements, ties paper wings onto itself for falling rather than flying. But one cannot fail to welcome the courage with which Kutter advanced to meet Social Democracy: “Does it not look as though the words of the prophets are being fulfilled again in our days, when we ‘pagans’ receive from the hands of ‘Jews,’ Marx, Engels, Lassalle, a mighty engine, called Social Democracy, which must bring us closer than anyone else to the great aims of the Kingdom of God?” Although Engels is not a “Jew,” Kutter's assessment is heartening. Whoever does not shut his eyes or turn away sees. And if people come to meet us but cannot understand us wholly, cannot cast off their old garments, so that a priestly cassock is still visible beneath their red blouse, let us not be indignant. Of course, it is necessary to criticize sharply all “mixtures,” all involuntary falsifications of scientific socialism, but their presence testifies to the enormous attractive power of the proletariat and its worldview. Christian Socialism in Russia Among Christian socialists and Christian anarchists in Russia, Tolstoy naturally occupies first place. His influence among the God-seeking peasantry is said to be fairly strong. Generally speaking, however, many admire the great writer's teaching, but very few accept it in practice. Just as the Orthodox merchants and petty bourgeoisie are pleased to think that there are such monks of the great schema and great fasters adorning Russian piety, without any thought, however, of imitating them even moderately, so Russian society, and to some extent civilized society generally, seems proud of the “prophet,” sage, and moralist of unbending character who adorns it. They are proud, they are moved, and there it ends. Undoubtedly, the negative part of Tolstoy's teaching, that is, his criticism, is useful to the blind and half-seeing. He has a gigantic gift for viewing with extraordinary simplicity the phenomena of our ugly social life and wretched official religiosity. His criticism is poisonous and deadly in its clear simplicity. We are far from denying the greatness of some elements of Tolstoy's positive teaching. Love is a great principle. It is destined one day to shine over a reconciled humanity. But Tolstoy has no understanding whatever of love's paths. Despite millennia of experience, he does not see that love in itself, as such, is not a social force, that it shatters against the iron necessity of society's economic development. Tolstoy lacks an understanding of humanity's still-great enslavement to the forces of nature and of the absolute necessity of new technological victories and a new organization of cooperation to attain the objective possibility of people's living together in love on earth. Culture follows a strange path; it does not proceed directly to its goal, but by a wide detour, hateful to every moralist, through the dissolution of communal life and the horrors of social differentiation. Yet otherwise it is impossible to attain wealth sufficient to secure a humane and spacious existence for all. Tolstoy, however, like all ideologists of an economy based on production for direct use who resist capital's progress, opposes love to culture. This often enables him brilliantly to criticize the falsehood and shame of modern civilization; but it also makes him a victim of utopianism, and of a rather gray and joyless sort at that, a utopianism idealizing the homespun kingdom of Ivan-the-Fools. Failing to understand culture and rejecting it in its entirety, Tolstoy
also fails to understand the natural method by which culture unfolds revolutionarily, ascending stages ever closer to victory and, with a new turn from capitalism to collectivism, also to love. This natural method is the class struggle. Tolstoy, however, does not see classes; shortsightedly he discerns everywhere only good and bad people, and rejects struggle as contrary to love. For he understands love abstractly, as an absolute demand and a guiding commandment, rather than as a goal that is as yet only desired. A false, abstract understanding of love led Tolstoy to the harmful preaching of non-resistance, [Matt. 5:39] wholly equivalent to permitting evil, and to his ugly outbursts against the liberation movement, moreover arrogating to himself the right to speak in the name of the whole Russian people. The abstract and absolute application of the principle of love makes love itself heartless. Tolstoy, thinking in an authoritarian and theological way, has transformed love from a force serving humanity into a God who commands. This is precisely what makes his apparently wholly rationalized and purely moral Christianity a religion of the old, metaphysical type. Tolstoy does not love humanity; he loves his God. His God is love, [cf. 1 John 4:8; 1 John 4:16] but to love love more than humanity is a sin against both humanity and love itself. God-as-love easily comes into opposition with love for one's own species, and leads to the triumph of death rather than of life. In The Kreutzer Sonata, Tolstoy indeed points to an ideal that kills. What does it matter? What matters is not the triumph of life, but the triumph of justice. But this is terrible idolatry, human sacrifice to Moloch. Of course, however, life will know how to use everything in Tolstoyism that is suitable for it, and will step over the moral idealism of the sage who does not shrink from the most extreme conclusions. Every open mysticism is repugnant to Tolstoy. If it is not difficult to discover a hidden mysticism in his teaching, that is, an all-consuming, absolute ideal, its origin is apparently explained by the preacher's passionate desire sharply to oppose “what is God's is strong” to “the enemy's sticky stuff,” which is generally so deaf to the appeals of the apostles of love. Another branch of Christian “socialism” came from Vladimir Solovyov. There is, however, no reason to count Solovyov himself among socialists, even “in quotation marks.” The most characteristic figure among the “socialist” disciples of this pillar of Russian mysticism is Professor Bulgakov. This man possesses a large stock of bourgeois class instinct. He recovered very quickly from his initial, short-lived enthusiasm for revolutionary Marxism. From his close acquaintance with Social Democracy, Bulgakov carried away a clear understanding of its power, of the formidable danger approaching the bourgeois world. The struggle against Social Democracy therefore became the ex-Marxist's chief concern, as with his brethren in… apostasy: Struve, Berdyaev, Izgoyev, Galich, and other worthy converts to Kadetism. Bulgakov's first stratagem in the struggle against revolutionary scientific socialism was to proclaim the collapse of “that distinctive and integral system which genuine Marxism constituted.” Bulgakov joyfully registered the victory of “scientifically thinking and critical reformism.” Reformism in itself is safer for the bourgeoisie, and most importantly, as Bulgakov immediately pointed out, it lacks the breadth, the flight, the charm of a great, captivating idealism that renews the world. In Germany too, along with the proclamation of the truths of creeping reformism, an attempt was made to season it with Author’s note 1: His curious pamphlet Marx as a Religious Type will be discussed later.
Kantian metaphysics, to lend it, all too earthly as it was, a little of the pale-blue color of old religiosity. Bulgakov too paused for a moment at the synthesis of Bernstein and Kant, but… passed it by. In that same Germany there was something better to learn. If one is looking for a workers' movement entirely safe for the bourgeoisie, one will find it in the denominational workers' organizations. Their latest congress showed remarkable success: under the aegis of enlightened clergy of all confessions, about half a million workers have been united! At the same time, from the example of Russian events, our Kadet-Christian socialist saw how strong the revolutionary current in Social Democracy still was. In a remarkable article published in The Polar Star, Bulgakov assured the Kadets that the most educated among them would falter before a popular audience in a debate with the youngest and most inexperienced Social Democrat, because the latter possesses religious enthusiasm and the liberal bourgeois does not. Thus one must work out a half-bourgeois religious enthusiasm ad usum, for the use of, the proletariat and peasantry. I think a sound bourgeois class instinct speaks here through Professor Bulgakov's mouth. Of course, even by this route it will prove impossible not only to defeat but to shake seriously Social Democracy's influence among the proletariat; yet some struggle can still be waged on this ground. Especially by drawing in the advanced clergy.[1, p.176] Safe, risk-free, yet still giving something, trade-unionism of a peaceful type and exercises on religious themes, still so close to the semi-peasant strata of the proletariat, may vegetate alongside Social Democracy for quite a long time. And if Social Democracy is inattentive to enemies of this sort, a success like that achieved in Germany is possible. It is hardly worth dwelling here on such strange shriekers of apocalyptic and hysterical Christianity as Sventsitsky[1, p.177] and Ern, offspring of Solovyov's mad Discourse on the Antichrist. Their tendency always remains confined to a flock of holy fools and snobs. More interesting is the “many-sided” Merezhkovsky, working himself into a sweat. This writer, who has always written much, has recently been working especially assiduously. And how could he not work? An enormous task lies before him! Rumor has it that with Mr. Merezhkovsky the third stage of world history, the stage of the Holy Spirit, will begin, and that with him the Gospel of John will triumph. Besides, Mr. Merezhkovsky must reconcile the “two abysses,” the upper and the lower, bring Christianity to acknowledge culture, and permeate culture with the light of Christ's teaching. In novels and dramas, verse and prose, great and small philosophical, critical, political, and all sorts of other works, in Russian and French, Merezhkovsky performs his Herculean labors. Mr. Merezhkovsky defines his work more concretely as follows: in Russia there were great religious sages, God-seekers, genuine prophets of the loftiest mysticism, of which other peoples had never even dreamed. But these light-bearing men in one way or another reconciled themselves to autocracy, failing to understand that outside freedom there is no great future for our incomparable people. On the other hand, we had Author’s note 1 (p.176): Grigory Petrov, wavering in ideas but powerful in his gift for agitation, may become a dangerous and perhaps unconscious weapon of counterrevolutionary Christianity. He may, of course, take an entirely different road. Author’s note 1 (p.177): This gentleman was compelled to take off his neo-Christian mask and revealed a rather repulsive and cynical face.
Он, конечно, может пойти и по совсем другой дороге. brave, self-sacrificing fighters for freedom, but they took little interest in Christ, turned up their noses at mysticism, and thereby displayed a profound failure to understand our people's spirit and the extraordinary character of the coming illumination awaiting Russia. At last Merezhkovsky appeared. Long did he mature, and he matured. He matured and understood that he was destined to unite popular God-seeking and the religious philosophy of the Gogols, Dostoevskys, and Solovyovs with the political intransigence of the Bakunins, Chernyshevskys, and Herzens. Merezhkovsky rejects the state outright and demands a complete transfiguration of the earth. No, something extraordinary, dazzling, hard to put into words must be realized: heaven will descend to earth, the earth will drown in azure rays, the New Jerusalem will glitter with ruby and sapphire spires in place of factory chimneys. [cf. Rev. 21:2; Rev. 21:19]… The kingdom of justice will be realized in all its fullness. In view of so enchanting a program, Merezhkovsky, this divinely inspired Christian communist or anarchist or superman, looks down upon the positivists. He will not settle for small things. He condemns their methods as well. Blood and violence are abhorrent to him.… True, heroic self-sacrifice… c'est beau, it is beautiful! But scratch a revolutionary, unless he happens to be from a good family, and you will almost always find… a hooligan who has no respect for culture. To the hooligan, the coming boor, Merezhkovsky prefers even the petty bourgeois. Therefore the absolute destroyer of the state writes in Kadet organs, where he quarrels ever so prettily with Struve. And they publish him with particular pleasure. And indeed, Merezhkovsky is always in essence a counterrevolutionary. Praising revolution, he drowns it in the drunken fluid of verbose mysticism, turns people's heads, and with his peacock's tail tries to conceal the red banner of labor from the public's eyes. Merezhkovsky may sincerely imagine that he is doing something very serious. But in reality he plays the buffoon, gives the gawkers a fairy spectacle containing everything that glitters. And all of it, from Christ to socialism, despite the tear and the hysterically sincere tremolo in his voice, has become the subject of the most whipped-up, inflated literary chatter and publicity! Despite Merezhkovsky's talent, he is unlikely to succeed in remaining for long an idol even of the part of the intelligentsia closest to him. Beyond it, this conjurer in Lohengrin's tinsel costume can arouse nothing but fleeting curiosity. Of all the Christian tendencies of the intelligentsia, only Bulgakov's, seriously conducted, can represent a certain danger, and even that only if the advanced clergy take it up. It goes without saying that the main body of the clerical army will react sharply negatively to Christian-socialist attempts. In his time the intelligent Metropolitan Filaret characterized democratic Christianity, and this characterization still hovers before our pastors' mind's eye: “Democratic Christianity was proclaimed during the Paris Revolution of 1848. A cross was carried before the crowd of rebels, and priests were made to consecrate the tree of liberty. Democratic Christianity shot at non-democratic Christians; and when the Archbishop of Paris wished to stop the bloodshed, democratic Christianity killed the archbishop on the barricade.” Yet in reality, exactly like political liberalism, democratic Christianity is one of the few forces capable of supporting the tottering apex of the social pyramid. But such is fate: the resolute adherents of the old ways, those whom God has decided to destroy and has therefore deprived of reason, always suspect the “modernists” in politics, economics, and religion of treachery: “You are handing us over to our destruction; you are
ready to defect to the side of rebellion.” And inwardly gnashing their teeth at the obtuseness of the rock-solid conservatives, the representatives of new currents and of more developed, though less highly placed, social groups vainly try to explain with the utmost respect that they make concessions only to strengthen authority and order. And who is right, after all? The time will come when the pressure of the revolutionary wave sweeps away the stone dams of the unyielding men of strong authority. Their inflexibility will contribute to their destruction. But concessions also provide poor salvation: the people are given a finger and seize the whole hand; a little crack is opened for them, and they thrust an axe into it and fling the gates wide before themselves. The unyielding Pope Pius X and the yielding modernists, for example, are equally powerless to save Catholicism. Nevertheless, it must be noted that whereas it is more difficult to struggle physically against a manifestly anti-popular orthodoxy, political or religious, it is more difficult to struggle ideologically against false friends and crafty conciliators. Especially dangerous are the seducers and peacemakers who sincerely believe in the lofty significance of their mission and devote great talent to its service. Christianity in Russia has long been passing through a severe religious crisis, whose true underlying basis is undoubtedly socioeconomic. Many regard the Schism and sectarianism as long-threatening elements of something like the sixteenth-century Reformation. Hence some even suppose that Russia faces a revolution clothed in religion rather than openly economic, since, they say, by virtue of its numbers the peasantry will play the chief role in it and set its own stamp upon it. There is some truth in this. The peasant, of course, readily clothes his needs and demands in the ideological forms most familiar to him, and also most closely corresponding to his relation to nature and to society as a whole. But first and foremost we must not forget for a moment that the peasantry is not something homogeneous. Mr. Luchinsky rightly observes concerning the Schism: “The Schism as a social phenomenon in the broad sense must be distinguished from the Schism as a social-religious doctrine. In all probability, there was no ‘civic’ element in the Muscovite Schism; to purely ritual disagreements there was added a personal feeling of hatred, malice toward Nikon and others. There was probably little of it among the literate men who created the sects, but the masses were unlikely to understand these subtleties, unlikely to reject the empire from purely religious motives. Their harsh economic and legal situation impelled them onto the path of protest, but they lacked sufficient consciousness to formulate their discontent. It was therefore expressed in the only accessible forms, spontaneous rebellions and adherence to the Schism. There could also be coincidences where discontent with one's social position and religious protest merged into one, but such cases were isolated. Thus the masses gave strength to the Schism, but altered, if not its doctrine, then its appearance, its character, bringing by their mere adherence a ‘civic’ element foreign to the Schism as a purely religious phenomenon. If their economic and legal situation changed for the better, they immediately reacted by renouncing the civic element; or rather, it was not that they renounced it, but that it fell away of itself.” The peasant is not the bearer of any new social order: he strives for well-being, for a stable small holding. He may remain a schismatic, a Stundist, but the social core of his religiosity decays; only a form remains, rapidly Author’s note 1: In the biography of Shchapov appended to volume III of his works.
degenerating into dry formalism, or progressing along the lines of liberal Christianity, which will be discussed later. But the peasant's petty-bourgeois ideal is unattainable for the whole peasantry; only a minority enters the peasant paradise. With time, under the pressure of competition from big capital, the number of those forever deprived of hope of having their own holding will increase. Part of this vast class of the rural poor will enter the industrial proletariat and there gradually, naturally adopt the religion of scientific socialism. A considerable part of the rural population, however, will long toss between hope and despair. Hope for a “repartition,” or a “Pugachev rebellion,” for “the tsar's mercy,” or the appearance of a new “Stepan,” weakens and passes into mystical hopes. Here there is ample scope for fantastic Christian-communist moods. Here apocalyptically minded movements may arise, ready with wild fanaticism to carry out God's will and build upon the ruins of the masters' culture a dimly looming idyll of some vaguely awaited Divine Justice. Extravagances of holy folly such as the famous Malyovanshchina and extreme Doukhoborism are also possible. But for the urban proletarian to extend a helping hand to his rural brother, he will have to break through a thick layer of fantastic religious beliefs and promises. This is most easily done with a profound understanding of his own scientific worldview and his own practice as a great new religion, arising out of the old ones and come to replace them. Author’s note 1: The government endeavored to accelerate this process through the notorious Law of 9 November.
