Christian socialism represents either the authentic ideology of dispossessed proletarian or semiproletarian masses, or an artificial system of views designed to ensnare those masses. Liberal Christianity is the ideology of the aristocratic and middle classes, which seek to bring their religious consciousness into harmony with their expanded worldview and, for one reason or another, do not wish to renounce the Christian tradition outright. Liberal Christianity is extremely rich in forms, but two principal ones can be distinguished among them. The growing self-consciousness, scientific education, and cultural cultivation of the upper classes, including the clergy itself, generate in their representatives a skeptical attitude toward the “mysteries” of Christian dogma that cry out against reason, toward miracles, and toward the infallibility of Scripture and ecclesiastical authorities. At the same time, they begin not only to perceive clearly the mismatch between the Gospel’s commandments and their way of life, but also to take the side of the latter against the former with greater or lesser boldness. This is the gradual secularization of the aristocracy’s minds and hearts. Yet, aware of all the advantages that popular superstition brings them, of the full importance of the church’s support for “order,” and in some cases themselves members of the clergy, aristocratic liberals are very much afraid of shaking
the very edifice of the church; they simply interpret their religion very freely and broadly for themselves. Here we find every gradation, from slight doubt and a frivolous “God will forgive!” to profound atheism or even a new religious consciousness that is not Christian at all. But the church is not shaken by this. For the common people it remains as it was, even as strict with them as before. If the moral corruption of the clergy, reaching the monstrous depravity of unbridled, utterly unbelieving, parasitic masters, provokes Christian-socialist, “apostolic” zeal for its purification under pressure from below, from the poor brethren in Christ, such attempts are immediately suppressed with a severity that has nothing in common with liberalism. It was precisely this kind of liberal Christianity that lived in the minds of many cultivated and worldly people in fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Italy, and indeed constituted one of the chief cultural forces of that astonishing epoch. The poor could organize nothing but politically impotent heresies. The aristocracy lived at peace with a church indulgent toward the upper classes. Italy’s middle classes understood the enormous advantage of Rome’s and the Vatican’s central position in Europe and feared to shake the papal throne, which brought such immense economic advantages to the whole of Italy. An entirely different kind of Christian liberalism triumphed in Germany. Aristocratic, humanistic liberalism is the fruit of Christianity’s internal decomposition, the decay of its moral substance while its ecclesiastical shell is preserved. The liberal Christianity of the middle classes is above all a protest against this constraining shell, an indignation against its gradually corrupted, already half-pagan contents: a protest both against the conservatism of the ecclesiastical aristocracy, which seeks to keep the people and the rising bourgeoisie under unrelenting oppression, and against its liberalism, which loosens the moral reins for the aristocracy itself. The middle classes are revolutionary in their self-consciousness: they still have someone above them to struggle against, and this is above all the spiritual aristocracy. The bourgeoisie finds its ideology principally in the Old Testament, reinterpreting the Gospel accordingly, since for it the Gospel follows directly from the other books of the Bible. At first the bourgeoisie does not reach a frivolous, Epicurean view of life; it is serious, industrious, and moral. Nor does it arrive at acute skepticism; its skepticism sweeps away only the crudest and most absurd traditions. It therefore opposes both old, ossified conservatism and the aristocracy’s frivolous religious liberalism with its own renewed Christianity, adapted to new conditions, viable, profoundly serious, and self-assured. Germany, where the princes sided with the bourgeois reformation of Christianity out of rivalry with Rome and greed for church property, opened the way to Christianity’s evolution, to its slow and more or less healthy transformation. Both forms of liberal Christianity lead, of course, to the end of Christianity itself. Under normal conditions, aristocratic liberalism would eat away so thoroughly at all the contents of Christianity that its outward form would one day burst like an empty bubble, and … nothing would remain. This is Christianity’s internal disease. Bourgeois Christianity is a healthy modification, a healthy evolution of religion as it gradually adapts itself to new social conditions. At first the changes are not so very great, but little by little they grow almost imperceptibly. The name remains the same, the principles change slowly, and finally something directly opposed to Christianity begins to be called by its name. When this is noticed, a whole tangle of sophisms is erected to prove that the butterfly is identical with the caterpillar, that day is identical with night.
Liberal Christianity of the Italian Renaissance The best elements of the dying ancient world tried to revive, or at least to avoid perishing altogether, in the new Christian atmosphere, opposing its world-denial in the form of the Pelagian heresy. One of the central questions of religion is whether the world is regarded as something good in itself, created, like humanity, for happiness and capable of attaining it by overcoming evil through forces inherent in the world and in humanity themselves; or whether, on the contrary, this real world is regarded as a kingdom of evil destined for destruction and purification by fire, while the souls condemned to languish in it can hope for salvation only from forces outside the world, from the beyond. Christianity, in differing degrees, less in millenarianism, more in Gnosticism, and so forth, nevertheless on the whole advanced a decidedly negative valuation of the world. This is understandable, since both the original democratic Christianity and the later philosophical-aristocratic Christianity were products of social disintegration and individual disappointment. Later, however, with the gradual revival of hope and, so to speak, a taste for life, the resurrection of the ancient gods became inevitable. Flourishing Provence exhibited a Renaissance even in the depths of the Middle Ages. Naturally, the new paganism, humanism, mingled with Christianity, attempting to give it humane forms. The dawn of fifteenth-century liberal Christianity coincided intellectually with the sunset, the Pelagianism of Augustine’s day. The spirit of liberalism in the best sense of the word, broad tolerance and love of humanity, was to the highest degree characteristic of such ancient thinkers as Cicero and Seneca, who strongly influenced the Pelagians and their own enthusiastic pupils, the humanists of the Renaissance. The preaching of Christian love had been discredited by the dogmas and superstitions of world-denying mysticism. It is hard to say whether, in certain respects, the ethics of Cicero and Seneca did not surpass those even of good, sincere Christians. Professor Zieliński says of ancient humaneness: “Ancient humaneness required above all a positive attitude toward life, not because such an attitude was a logical conclusion from firmly grounded premises, but because its representatives were physically and morally strong and healthy people, to whom life vividly made itself felt as a source of the highest happiness.” And elsewhere: “For a humane society, virtue was a positive concept, not a negative one. A person was considered good if he was active, working with all his strength for the benefit of friends, country, and humanity.” It was this spirit that naturally began to revive with the appearance of the joyful, developed, critically thinking, and progressive individual. In place of the categorical commandment, further reinforced by the promise of paradise and the threat of hell, in place of the Christians’ love that negates the individual “for God’s sake,” honor once again becomes the center of ethics: that astonishing bond between egoistic and social feelings woven into a magnificent harmony. Guicciardini, a typical son of the Renaissance, writes in his Ricordi: “Whoever sets a high value upon honor succeeds in everything, for he fears neither toil, nor danger, nor expense. I have experienced this myself, and therefore boldly say and write: empty and dead are all human actions that do not proceed from this powerful motive force.” We may appreciate the thoroughly aristocratic character of this morality in those times from the rules of the “knights and ladies of the Order of Free Will” described by Rabelais: “Their rules contained the following: do what you will.
For these were free people, of good birth, well brought up, moving exclusively in noble society, who by nature possess a certain instinct and, as it were, a spur that drives them toward good deeds and restrains them from vice: they call this instinct honor.” But the principle “everything is permitted,” and even any weakening of fear and hope as the customary supports of morality, inevitably lead to abuses, since vulgar or unformed natures cannot find within themselves that “spur” of which Rabelais speaks. The weakening of faith often led to moral corruption, while the clergy’s moral disintegration provided a new stimulus for the developed individual to free himself from the bonds of ecclesiastical captivity. Burckhardt speaks admirably of this: “The heaviest responsibility that has ever weighed upon anyone in history lies upon the declining church. Under the guise of pure truth, it enforced with every means of violence an outrageous teaching, disfigured for the benefit of its own omnipotence, while surrendering itself to the grossest immorality in the knowledge of its own inviolability. To maintain this position, it resorted to murderous blows against the spirit and conscience of peoples, and many highly gifted people, having inwardly renounced it, abandoned themselves to unbelief and bitterness.” The monks, those “ascetics” whose duty it was to uphold the church through the holiness of their lives, became a byword and overstepped every limit of outrageous conduct. Masuccio, in a book dedicated to the King of Naples, writes among other things: “I myself have more than once attended the monks’ orgies, seen them with my own eyes and touched them with my hands. The nuns then either give birth to pretty little monks or abort the fruit of their wombs. If anyone wishes to maintain that this is a lie, let him search the monastery drains: he will find whole stores of delicate little bones there, as in Bethlehem in the days of Herod.” [cf. Matt. 2:16] Mendicant friars carried their idleness, filth, debauchery, and superstition everywhere, while the older orders set an example of insolent parasitism. Firenzuola describes them vividly: “Well fed, in their ample robes, they do not wear out their lives walking barefoot and preaching, but prefer to sit in beautiful morocco slippers in their splendid cells with patterned cypress floors, their hands folded upon their bellies. If they occasionally have to stir from their places, they settle comfortably onto mules and fat little horses, as though to rest. They do not weary their spirits with excessive study of books, lest knowledge develop in them the pride of Lucifer instead of monastic simplicity.” The following incident is characteristic of the morals of the higher clergy: the young Pier Luigi, Bishop of Fano, was everywhere renowned for his holiness. The Bishop of Parma, a son of Pope Paul III, envied him, came to him with his retinue, and … raped him. Under the pressure of an inwardly negative attitude toward the church, and sustained by life’s flourishing and a proud consciousness of increased human dignity, a new religious consciousness took shape. Burckhardt characterizes this new, sharply individualistic self-consciousness as follows: “Individual development in itself is neither good nor bad: it is inevitable. In it develops the modern concept of good and evil, a moral responsibility essentially different from that of the Middle Ages. The Italian of the Renaissance had to bear the first powerful movement of this new age. With his gifts and passions he became the most conspicuous, distinctive representative of everything lofty and profound that characterizes this age. Alongside deep depravity,
the noblest harmony develops within him, and he creates the highest art, which glorifies individual life to a degree that neither antiquity nor the Middle Ages could attain.” The religion of the noblest bearers of this individualism was a moral deism, which prompted Masuccio to exclaim: “The best punishment for the monks would be for God to abolish purgatory: then they would have to abandon their idleness and take up the spade.” Galeotto Marzio wrote: “Whoever leads an upright life and conforms in his actions to the inward, innate law will enter paradise, whatever nation he may belong to.” Individualism of an aristocratic type, easily unbridled, naturally often passes into an openly antisocial “will to power.” A consummate example of this type is Werner of Urslingen, who chose the following motto: “An enemy of God, of compassion, and of mercy!” Friedrich Nietzsche wholeheartedly welcomes this internal destruction of Christianity, this gradual replacement of its democratic and ascetic tendencies with frankly aristocratic and predatorily life-affirming ones. He also understood magnificently that the Reformation, by replacing at one stroke the miserable edifice of contemporary Catholicism in half of Europe with the solid fortress of sternly bourgeois-pious Protestantism, and thereby provoking a severe Catholic reaction in the other half, arrested the rapidly advancing process of Christianity’s decomposition. Nietzsche devoted a brilliant page of his Antichrist to a characterization of the Renaissance and the Reformation. It must be quoted here in full: “The Germans deprived Europe of the last great cultural harvest that could have been gathered for it: the Renaissance. Does anyone finally understand, does anyone want to understand, what the Renaissance was? A revaluation of Christian values; an attempt, undertaken with every means, every instinct, and all the powers of genius, to bring victory to the opposite values, aristocratic values. I see before me a possibility possessing an altogether otherworldly charm and color: it seems to me to glitter with all the terrors of refined beauty, to embody an art so divine, so devilishly divine, that one would search in vain for a second such possibility in a thousand years. I see a spectacle so rich in meaning, and at the same time so astonishingly paradoxical, that all the gods of Olympus would have cause for immortal laughter: Cesare Borgia as pope … Do you understand me? … Yes, that would have been the victory which today I alone desire: through it Christianity would have disappeared. What happened instead? A German monk, Luther, came to Rome; this monk, possessing all the vengeful instincts of an injured priest, rebelled in Rome against the Renaissance … Instead of understanding with the deepest gratitude the immense event that had occurred, the overcoming of Christianity at its center, his hatred could extract only nourishment for itself from this spectacle. The religious man thought only of himself. Luther saw the corruption of the papacy, whereas precisely the opposite was evident: the old Christianity no longer sat upon the papal throne. Life sat there! The triumph of life sat there! The great Yes to everything lofty, beautiful, and daring sat there! And Luther restored the church again! He attacked it … The Renaissance: an event without meaning, a great In Vain! Ah, these Germans, what they have already cost us! In vain: this has always been the Germans’ work! The Reformation, Leibniz, Kant, and so-called German philosophy; the wars for ‘freedom’; the empire: each time an In Vain for something that already existed, something irretrievable. The Germans also have on their conscience the
most unclean form of Christianity there is, the most incurable, the most irrefutable: Protestantism … If people fail to put an end to Christianity, the Germans will be to blame for it” …[E39] Liberal Christianity of the Reformation 1) In their social content, the Reformation movements in general express the struggle of nations exploited by Rome against the Catholic clergy, which had laid its heavy paw upon everything and everyone, from the poorest peasants to educated rulers. Even the local clergy often suffered from the arbitrariness and tyranny of the Catholic center. Rulers readily sided with the bourgeois apostles of the Reformation. The Anglican Church arose out of the crown’s struggle with the Vatican. But both in England and everywhere on the continent, it was nevertheless the bourgeoisie that emerged as the principal bearer of the Reformation idea. In some places its right wing, its wealthiest elements, aligned itself closely with the princes and the king; in others it acted quite independently. Economically heterogeneous itself, it stretched out in a long line, its right flank joining the princely movement against Rome, while its left, peasant flank approached the proletariat of the time with its Christian communism. The English Reformation numbers among its representatives that vilest of tyrants, Henry VIII; the upper-bourgeois and parliamentary Presbyterians; radicals and republicans of the most energetic type, headed by the great Oliver Cromwell; and the communist Levellers. The same pattern was repeated in Holland, Germany, Switzerland, and France. Martin Luther is usually considered the greatest hero of the Reformation. He was the leader of the right wing of the German bourgeoisie, indulged the princes, and abased himself before them, yet he remained the ideal of the overwhelming majority of Protestants. He is indeed the ideal bourgeois. In him it is easiest to see what the social content of the Reformation consisted in, and this is why I wish to quote a few characteristic sayings of this noble “renewer” of Christianity. Doctor Martin evidently held the loftiest, one might say Tolstoyan, conception of Christian patience and humility: “A Christian must often bow down and endure without the slightest resistance,” Luther writes to instruct the peasants. “A Christian is a martyr on earth. Christ explicitly says in Matthew 5: ‘Do not resist evil,’ [Matt. 5:39] and so forth. Do you see how the false prophets deceive you? They have made you Christians into the worst of heathens. Even a child ought to understand that the Christian commandment requires you not to fight injustice, not to take up the sword, not to defend yourselves, not to take revenge, but to surrender both life and property: let whoever wishes to plunder go ahead and plunder. Suffering, suffering, the cross, the cross: this is your right, Christians, and nothing else!” What humility! What purity of thought and feeling! Yet at the very same time, this same exalted disciple of Christ the Savior wrote to the princes: “The authorities must hunt down the rabble, beat them, strangle them, hang them, burn them, behead them, break them on the wheel, so that the people tremble and dare not slip the bridle!” At first the Reformation seized all the masses; everyone hoped for relief, and each social group sought to impose its own program upon the common movement against the common enemy, Rome. But real success was achieved only by those classes which the course of socioeconomic development had prepared for power, namely the princes in Germany and the prosperous bourgeoisie in Holland and Switzerland. Having struck a blow at Rome, the classes that had seized supremacy immediately
turned to face the masses pressing forward behind them and “pacified the rabble’s unbridled passions.” Arturo Labriola says, among other things, of the Reformation: “What is most worthy of attention is that the Reformation was originally a movement of interest to all social classes, including the proletarian class, which enthusiastically joined the anti-papal campaign and became its opponent only when it noticed the movement’s disastrous influence upon its own position. But this result, disastrous for the proletarian class, was not, so to speak, intended or programmatic. For the Reformation, regarding ecclesiastical exploitation and certain associated injustices as attributes of the Roman Church, itself intended to benefit precisely the most enslaved classes. This result followed from the dialectical process underlying every reformist activity, a process by which every such activity arrives at results opposed to its own conscious aim. For example, while in England serfdom, against which the agrarian revolution associated with Wycliffe’s name in 1381 had been directed, was abolished as early as the end of the fifteenth century, in Germany the Lutheran Reformation inaugurated the most cruel and savage feudal reaction, and an oppression of the peasantry scarcely paralleled in the annals of human history. The Reformation was unable to offer the mass of oppressed and despised peasants anything beyond cowardly and hypocritical verbal consolation and sophistical proofs of the inevitable necessity of their bestial condition. Thus it is not at all surprising if, after the suppression of the peasant uprisings, after the savage and bloody reprisals that followed them, beside which the pages recounting the French nobility’s cruel treatment of the participants in the Jacquerie of 1538 pale, it is not surprising if, after all this, the unfortunate peasants accused of rebellion mounted the scaffold with the cry: ‘May the devil help us now!’ They had become convinced that the closest ties of kinship existed between Luther’s god and Rome’s god.” All this is very true. The only strained point is the idea that it was specifically the reformist method, as distinct from the revolutionary one, that led to such results. For the French revolutions repeatedly presented the same picture and arrived at a similar result: the people were deceived, and the fruits fell to the class economically mature enough to rule. In part, the Reformation consummated the bourgeoisie’s victory over feudalism, as in Switzerland, for example; in part it led to an alliance between the bourgeoisie and the princes. In any case, everywhere it struck a blow at the lesser nobility. The bourgeois certainly received a very modest role in this alliance, but the social results of the Reformation nevertheless satisfied him more or less. As for ideology, it supplied him with one that was thoroughly satisfactory, and for a long time to come. What, then, was the ideological, religious content of the Reformation? First, the rationalization of religion, the limitation of authority and extension of the individual’s rights, and, finally, the sanctification in Christ’s name of the virtuous bourgeois life, of ideal respectable conventionality. All three aspects are closely connected. 2) Since very different social strata sought in the Reformation an expression of their class interests, the religious reflection of their aspirations also proved diverse. For the more privileged classes, the complete collapse of the clergy’s authority as a kind of police force was undesirable and dangerous. They therefore did not carry very far their denial of the spiritual fathers’ power to bind and loose. [cf. Matt. 16:13–20] In the Anglican Church even the bishop’s authority
was preserved, and the king fully replaced the pope. Lutherans hold firmly to the pastor. The further one moves away from the upper levels of society, the more spiritually democratic the Reformation becomes, reaching the complete ecclesiastical independence of the Quakers and various “priestless” currents of Anabaptism. Correspondingly, in the most victorious ecclesiastical forms of the new reformed Christianity, the purification of religion from superstition and its adaptation to reason remained half measures. Lutheranism, while sweeping away certain dogmas, sacraments, and rites, retained others wholly uncritically. The priest’s transformation of bread and wine into flesh and blood becomes a fundamental dogma of the right-wing reformers against the left. It preserves the priest’s significance as a miracle-worker and religion’s mystical and magical character. The left wing goes further in criticism; in rationalizing Christianity, it follows a straight road toward deism. The freedom of the individual, everyone’s right to read and interpret the Bible in their own way, and the recognition of the superiority of faith as a subjective, free feeling over external ritual and outward piety are the brightest aspects of the Reformation. But by no means everyone carried them to their logical conclusion. Luther furiously assailed heresy and “the whore, reason.” Increasingly he clung to the authority of his provosts and consistories, calling upon the secular power of his indulgent princely patrons, whom he himself served out of both fear and conscience, [cf. Rom. 13:5] to defend his timid and narrow-minded form of Reformation. The greater personal freedom permitted by the left-wing Protestants led to an endless fragmentation of religion, to the collapse not merely of the universal church but of little churches and sects as well, and to the complete recognition of religion as an entirely subjective, private phenomenon rather than a public one. Calvin occupies a distinctive position in the multicolored and misty current of the Reformation. Socially, his reform amounted to the rule of the middle bourgeoisie as a collective, and very closely resembled the ideal of Robespierre, that exponent of the same, so to speak, thoroughly individualistic bourgeois collectivism. Rule by terror, expressing the power of the bourgeois community’s centripetal forces over centrifugal bourgeois individualism, or, if one prefers, the bourgeois’s fear of himself, his fear as a member of society of himself as an egoistic private property owner, manifests itself equally vividly in Calvin’s Geneva and Robespierre’s France. The connecting link is the Genevan Rousseau, Calvin’s pupil and Robespierre’s teacher. We have pointed out that the joyful liberal Christianity of the Renaissance proclaimed the truths of Pelagianism anew. Faith in the individual, in humanity! Calvinism arrives at the opposite with a fanaticism that would have made Augustine himself shudder. Not only can no personal merit save anyone, but even to entertain the thought that a human being as such can do anything good is already a mortal sin. The republican petty bourgeois, the petit bourgeois, has no faith whatever in himself or in anyone else. Only an exalted higher will alien to him as an individual, as an egoistic shopkeeper and property owner, a will hammered into him from outside and not belonging to him, can break him and make him fit for life in society, that is, “virtuous.” For Calvin this is God’s predestining grace, fully expressed in the state with its law, prisons, and stakes. For Robespierre it is above all the state with its committees, revolutionary tribunals, and guillotine, but still resting upon the “Supreme Being.” In the eyes of both, “Epicureans” and aristocrats are Satan’s offspring, for here is the bourgeois unbridled, devoid of fear, and therefore undoubtedly plotting evil, seeking to subject his fellow citizens
to his will, thirsting for power, luxury, enjoyment, and fame: in short, an exploiter of his fellow citizens. The bourgeois must be frightened, or he will begin to gnaw at his neighbors, cease to be a sheep in the flock, and become a wolf. Do not slumber, then, servants of church and state! Terrible was the Terror of the last weeks of the Committee of Public Safety’s rule; but the Scottish Calvinists’, the Presbyterians’, sermons on hell are likewise filled with smoke and blood, and they are still more terrible. In their feverish imagination God rises as a monster beside whom Moloch, Shiva, Ahriman, and Satan are good-natured little beasts. This is where the republican petty bourgeoisie arrived when left to itself, striving to create a stable, viable, victorious collective out of material so unsuitable for the purpose as the petty bourgeois.[Author’s note 1] But such tyranny, such tension, could not last long. The petty bourgeois had to abandon his Brand-like severity, his “all or nothing,” his demanding, unbearable God or state. Calvinism, like the democratic statism of Rousseau and Robespierre, was a surge of the petty bourgeoisie toward collective self-assertion as a class. That surge failed. The big bourgeoisie was coming to replace the small and created its own forms of state and social life, thrusting its democratic brethren into the background. And the petty bourgeois, in general, submitted. How readily he submitted, wherever he had been unable to attain independence even temporarily, in Germany, for example, to the power of kings, princes, and emperors! Here he was not called upon to create politically. He was allotted only the narrow arena of the workshop, shop, and family. Here bourgeois individuality felt freer, and the Lord God was more indulgent toward it. The task was not to turn God into a political principle and realize a bourgeois democracy under the guise of theocracy, but merely to make the God and Christ of ancient Christianity and Catholicism into bourgeois figures. Protestantism proclaimed holy and sacred all the foundations of bourgeois life that proletarian-monastic Christianity rejected: family, property, good-natured contentment, moderate pleasure, and comfort. Of course, the bourgeois easily disrupts this harmony: sometimes poverty and ruin threaten him; sometimes “unjust wealth” tempts him. This is Adam’s original sin speaking within him; in it is concealed the transience and imperfection of everything earthly.[Author’s note 2] But on Sundays the church gives him something like a spiritual bath. On Sunday the equality, goodwill, and godliness of each and all are restored, oh, spiritually, of course! Sunday is the day of the triumph, in spirit, of the ideal of a fraternally loving bourgeoisie in Christ. Surely something will remain for the weekdays, those weekdays on which the property-owning shopkeeper, the individualist bourgeois, involuntarily comes to the fore? A precarious harmony of the bourgeois-heavenly and the bourgeois-earthly, yet one that accompanies with its psalms the whole life of the bourgeoisie among the Germanic peoples. A bourgeois, Gotteskirchliche “harmonium.” Koigen, in his book The Ideals of Socialism, characterizes Protestantism very profoundly: “Luther’s idea, faith, was of course destined to remain a holiday affair in the most literal sense: only on Sundays did the pulpit proclaim the equality of all people in faith. Socioeconomic activity Author’s note 1: For some details on bourgeois individualism and its varieties, see my article ‘Individualism and the Petty Bourgeoisie’ in the collection Essays on the Philosophy of Collectivism, published by Znaniye. Author’s note 2: See below the remark on the morality of Kant, who was intellectually connected with the triad Calvin–Rousseau–Robespierre. Heine had already noted this.
Protestantism left to the natural course of things, reserving for itself power only over the inner person. The sanctification of people’s common existence and their actions was expected from the inward voice, from the individual’s ‘conscience.’” “A person has a ‘conscience,’ and then neither the struggle for existence, nor the strong person’s aspirations to power and domination, nor people’s striving to exploit one another need frighten him.” Modern Liberal Christianity Historians of Christianity such as Otto Pfleiderer, who regard Christianity as a religious system still unfinished, still evolving and progressing along with the human race, count Lessing, Kant, Fichte, and Hegel, and still more Schleiermacher, among those who continued Christ’s work. These philosophers undoubtedly had immense significance for the development of humanity’s religious self-consciousness. It is equally beyond doubt that all of them tried, with conspicuous strain, to place their religious-philosophical constructions in a direct or indirect relationship to Christianity. But in any case this connection is very weak, often simply artificial and false. We therefore prefer to examine the systems of these philosophers in a separate chapter devoted to modern religious philosophy. Nevertheless, genuine liberal Christianity exists and develops intellectually. It flourishes principally in the theological and pastoral circles of Great Britain and Protestant Germany, but it has also manifested itself in a fairly strong movement among the Catholic clergy. The philosophical pragmatism of the American James exerts a powerful influence on the latter. Alongside James, however, one must regard the most celebrated of contemporary Protestant theologians, Adolf Harnack, as to some extent a father of Catholic modernism. Among liberal Protestants, Harnack’s influence unquestionably predominates. Harnack, who passed through an excellent critical schooling, a descendant of the Tübingen school of theology that shed such destructive philosophical and historical light on all Scripture’s obscure questions, remained faithful to Christianity. He became its strongest and most ingenious apologist, adapting it to the needs of the modern enlightened bourgeois. All this compels us to dwell upon the quintessence of the religious views of this pope of liberal Christianity. First of all, Harnack must, of course, overcome Christianity’s ancient-proletarian, anti-master, and communist asceticism. Only when cleansed of these elements does the Gospel become suitable for the enlightened bourgeois. Harnack therefore teaches: “Jesus speaks of three enemies in this world, but he does not say that we must flee them; he directly commands that they be destroyed. These three enemies are mammon, anxiety, and selfishness. Bear in mind that there is no question here of flight from the world; what is spoken of is only a struggle to be waged until complete victory. These dark powers must be overthrown. By mammon is meant earthly gold and earthly goods in the broad sense of the word, that gold and those earthly goods that become our masters and make us, in turn, tyrants over others; for gold is ‘concentrated violence.’ Jesus speaks of this enemy as though it were a living person, now as an armed horseman or a king, now as the devil. Against this enemy is directed the thought: ‘You cannot serve two masters.’ [Matt. 6:24; Luke 16:13] If anything within mammon’s domain becomes so dear to a person that he attaches his heart to it, trembles at the thought of possibly losing it, and
can no longer voluntarily renounce it, such a person is already mammon’s captive and in its chains. Therefore a Christian, if he feels this danger for himself, must not strike a bargain with mammon but begin a struggle, and not merely wage a struggle but positively crush mammon. Of course, if Christ were preaching in our own day, among us, his words would not have such a general character.” So, property owners! It is easy for you to reassure yourselves: convince yourselves that you have not become slaves to your property, that in a purely platonic sense you are capable of renouncing it at any moment … and enjoy possessing it, without being troubled by what was said about the “eye of a needle.” [Matt. 19:24; Mark 10:25; Luke 18:25] Anxiety and selfishness are treated just as gently. Christ merely taught people not to go to extremes; that is all. But Harnack concludes his struggle against Christ’s asceticism with sublime, if involuntary, humor: “If certain sayings of Jesus bearing on this matter have been transmitted to us and sound too general, then their meaning, in connection with the totality of his sayings, must undoubtedly be restricted (!). The Gospel demands self-training in holiness, strict vigilance, and the destruction of the adversary. But, without any doubt, Jesus demanded self-sacrifice and self-restraint on a much larger scale than we might perhaps wish.” (!) Harnack dismisses the social, class character of the Gospel out of hand: “When we encounter the word ‘poor’ in the Gospel, we cannot, without further ado, understand it as necessarily meaning the economically poor. In fact, however, at that time economic poverty and religious humility and sincerity coincided completely, in contrast to the Pharisees’ proud ‘exercises in virtue’ and their routine ‘righteousness.’ From this it is clear that we have no right to transfer our present-day concepts of ‘poor’ and ‘rich’ wholesale to those distant times.” You see: “poor” in the Gospel simply means “sincere,” even if the person is Stumm or Krupp himself! Moreover, Christ did not desire the abolition of social inequality: “By saying, ‘The poor will always remain with you,’ [cf. Matt. 26:11; Mark 14:7; John 12:8][E40] he intimated (?!) that social relations would never change in their foundations.” This is entirely in the spirit of the “Christian socialist” Pastor Naumann, whom we have already quoted. Further: “Jesus himself respected authority and wanted others to respect it.” The summary of Christ’s political teaching sounds Lutheran: “1) Jesus, as we have seen, was wholly imbued with the conviction that God establishes justice. Thus, in the end it is not the violent oppressor who will prevail; the oppressed will obtain their right. 2) Earthly rights are in themselves a trifling matter; losing them is not yet a great calamity. 3) The situation is so sad, injustice reigns so absolutely on earth, that all attempts by the oppressed to realize their right are fruitless. 4) And this is the main thing: just as God rules mercifully and makes the sun shine upon the good and the evil, so Jesus’ disciple must treat his enemies with love and disarm them through meekness.” [cf. Matt. 5:44–45] How convenient, Lord God, how convenient! But the most interesting part is the polemic with Strauss over the question of labor and culture. Strauss, as is well known, considered the chief defect of Christianity to be its lack of connection with labor and culture. Our Harnack replies to this accusation as follows: “Labor and cultural progress are undoubtedly something precious, and we must work in that direction. But the highest ideal does not lie in them; they cannot fill the soul with true satisfaction.
But this is only one side of the matter. I have always found that those who speak loudest of the pleasure afforded by work are those who do not trouble themselves too much with it, whereas real workers are far more sparing in their praise. In fact, there is much empty talk and hypocrisy here. Every kind of work is three-quarters stupefying, and the real worker eagerly awaits the longed-for evening, as the poet has observed so truly: Shoulders and legs and hands alike Rejoice that the torments are over Of the day spent at work. “And the results of work! Once it is finished, one wants to do it over again, and its imperfection falls like a heavy stone upon our soul and conscience. No, we live not insofar as we work, but insofar as the love of other people gladdens us and insofar as we ourselves devote ourselves to works of love. So Faust is right: work that is nothing more than work is repulsive: ‘And once again dreams will hasten there, Where life’s spring gushes forth.’” How noble, liberal, and … poetic! “A person of deep feeling gratefully accepts what the progress of material culture gives him, but he knows that his inner life and the fundamental demands of his spirit do not, in their essence, change in dependence upon all this. Perhaps only for a moment can it seem that something new is coming, that things really are becoming easier. Gentlemen! As one grows older and looks more deeply into life, one experiences no change in one’s inner world, no forward movement under the influence of the ‘progress of culture.’ On the contrary, one sees oneself always in the same place and begins to seek support where one’s ancestors already saw it.” This is excellent! Once the liberal Christian began speaking about labor, he had to arrive at the denial of progress. He tried to transform labor, which wins mastery over the world and secures happiness, into some sort of tedious, exhausting treadmill. In place of creative labor, the source of that religious-socialist feeling for the world most dangerous to the bourgeoisie, he substitutes the hopeless penal servitude into which his friends and patrons, the capitalists, strive to turn the worker’s labor. “Must we really wish the Gospel to stick itself onto the ‘cultural process’? I think that in this respect we must learn from it rather than do violence to it. It calls us to the true work that humanity must perform, and we dare not hide from this summons behind our pitiful ‘cultural work.’” It is superfluous to criticize this pitiful phrase. Here liberalism cuts its own legs from under it, arrives at the denial of its own foundation, cultural progress, at intellectual stagnation and reaction, clearly sensing that the road of culture leads away from those fortresses of cards which the learned professor has constructed, for the prosperous bourgeois who is triumphant for the moment, out of distorted and perverted passages from the old proletarian book. Hypocrisy and obscurantism! And this is the foremost representative of religious liberalism! We shall not dwell on the modernists here. These are half-hearted minds, convinced of the inevitable collapse of the tottering fortress of rock-hard Catholicism and wishing to repair it, thereby demolishing it still further. The curses of petrified dogmatists rain down upon them. “Belief in miracles, in the letter, unwillingness to reckon with the spirit of the age will bring Catholicism to destruction!” cry the modernists. “Freedom to interpret dogmas and sacraments, recognition of faith’s evolution, the desire to reconcile oneself with the spirit of the age will bring Catholicism to destruction!” cry the conservatives in reply. Both, separately and together, will bring you to
destruction, friends. Instability is fatal, and accommodation is fatal too, for the spirit of the age moves forward. Nothing new can be found in the modernists’ works: they are a weakened reflection of criticism outside Catholicism, of Strauss, Baur, and Renan; fragments of the philosophy of Kant, James, and Bergson. To Catholics all this is new and even scandalous; to us it is commonplace and in part seriously outdated. The only relative novelty in modernism is religious and general philosophical pragmatism, of which we have already spoken in connection with Kutter. Liberal Christianity in Russia Many are inclined to regard the gifted but eccentric Vladimir Solovyov as a pillar of enlightened and liberal Russian Christianity. His services to philosophy and theology, however, are exaggerated to an extreme degree by his few followers. At the beginning of his literary activity, Solovyov did indeed wish to present the cultural process itself as a mystical process of realizing God-humanity on earth. Similar ideas had been expressed before him both by certain Church Fathers, especially Clement, and by many Romantic philosophers. German idealism, at any rate, leaves Solovyov’s constructions far behind. The selected works of Solovyov published in German attracted no attention in Germany. The Germans found that Schelling’s third system represented a deeper and more powerful reworking of Gnosticism, even supposing that we need such refurbishments and generalizations of dead religious fantasy.[Author’s note] A tendency toward paradoxical, somewhat coquettish mysticism and scholastic constructions, a peculiar delight in triumphing over the difficulties of providing supposedly modern, supposedly scientific proofs of bizarre dogmatic monstrosities, ruined Solovyov. His quasi-Orthodox mysticism destroyed his liberalism; he died publicly raving in a thoroughly obscurantist, reactionary vein. Mysticism devoured him, as it had once devoured the souls of Gogol and Dostoevsky. Despite fairly zealous publicity and popularization, Solovyov’s works are unlikely to play a notable role. Nor does the ponderous work of the mystical Kadet Prince Trubetskoy, who interwove the moderate liberalism of the gentry with the doctrine of the Logos, have much prospect of doing so. Both these neo-Gnostics have died; their works are dying too. We must regard Rozanov and Berdyaev as the living representatives of liberal Christianity in Russia. Only the former, however, is of genuine interest; unfortunately, his discord with Christianity grows increasingly apparent, so that one does not know whether he can be included here. Rozanov began as a complete Iudushka Golovlyov, as that same Solovyov dubbed him. With posturing and grimaces, with sly shamelessness and a sort of chuckle sounding underneath it all at himself and at the reader, Rozanov proved the most impossible, paradoxical “truths,” not even of Christianity or Orthodoxy, but of Pobedonostsev’s official state ecclesiasticism. To the contempt expressed for him by the liberal mystic Solovyov, this gifted and unscrupulous rhetorician and apologist for every quasi-religious abomination insolently replied that Solovyov would one day come over to him. I do not know whether one can say precisely that his prediction was wholly fulfilled; at any rate, Solovyov sank ever more deeply into gloomy, delirious fanaticism. Rozanov himself, meanwhile, began moving to the left. It is said that some personal circumstance prompted Rozanov’s change of position. At any rate, proceeding from the question of marriage and the family, he began attacking ever more sharply first the Synod and monasticism, then Orthodoxy, and finally Author’s note: Almost all Solovyov’s epistemological theories are taken wholesale from Hamann and Jacobi, and his mystical theories from Plato, Böhme, Baader, and Schelling.
Christianity itself. In Russia, not only the petty bourgeoisie, the merchant class, and the prosperous peasantry, but also the parish clergy cling firmly to the family. Family and property are the foundation of life for the most respectable parishioners of our churches. Yet pure Christianity regards marriage, family, and property as an abomination, an indulgence of the flesh that can barely be tolerated because of human weakness. Christianity’s ascetic tendencies continue to make themselves felt in Russia to this day, since the Synod is in the hands of monks, and in many questions, perhaps secondary in themselves but collectively of considerable consequence, the Synod and the monastic clergy dominate life. Proceeding from the clash between the natural needs and ideals of the petty bourgeoisie, including the parish clergy, and ascetic ideals inherited from the Ebionites’ proletarian communism and the spiritualistic hatred of the world of the sages of ancient decadence, the Gnostics; in short, from the contradiction between secular, fleshly ideals and so-called spiritual ones, Rozanov embarked upon a kind of reformation of Christianity aimed at purifying it of its gloomy monastic elements. On the whole this is precisely what the Western Protestants did when they too did away with monasticism and Christianized the family, property, the bourgeois secular way of life, bourgeois respectability and virtue. Only excesses and debauchery, and also … every form of rebellion, were thereby declared sinful. “Peace and quiet,” the ideal of the middle and petty bourgeoisie, received “God’s grace” into the bargain. Strictly speaking, our Russian petty bourgeoisie never paid too much heed to the ways of Byzantine asceticism. But the time had come for the bourgeois to review and reassess himself, and through the mouths of Rozanov and others he naturally began criticizing every tradition in his religion that did not correspond to his own spirit. But the centuries since Luther had not passed in vain! Driven by the demon of modern criticism and a taste for slyly raising ticklish questions for amusement, for walking along the edge of the abyss, Rozanov went far in his criticism! On the one hand, he tried to exalt the “world,” secular, fleshly life as the bourgeois wants and loves it. Glorifying the joys of the flesh, he poetized in pantheistic fashion, or at least tried to, the process of animal existence, especially sexual pleasures, and saw in the begetting of offspring “an immortality of the race sufficient to replace the mystics’ ash-gray immortality beyond the grave.” The more Rozanov became carried away with coloring and gilding the “world,” the clearer it became to him that Christianity could not be repaired, that it was a force absolutely hostile to that world, an enemy of life and the flesh, a product of despair. For it was precisely hatred of existence here, despair of the possibility of happiness on earth, that gave birth to the convulsive hope of happiness beyond the grave! That dream then blossomed so richly, rose so freely into the unresisting atmosphere of fantasy, that it became a sweet poison killing the living, real joy of life and earthly concern for its genuine improvement. Liberalism began to burn Christianity out of Rozanov, just as Christianity had burned liberalism out of Solovyov. The bourgeois fears asceticism when his affairs are going well, or at least satisfactorily. In such a position mysticism too is tiresome and suspect to him. If enemies of every kind above and below, enemies stronger than himself, did not press upon him, he would follow Rozanov and arrive at a smug, grunting nihilism, at the positivism of the trough, the bedroom, the nursery, the marketplace, and the purse, while anything beyond these would be of the Evil One. [cf. Matt. 5:37] The triumphant bourgeois and the triumphant pig are one and the same. Pantheism would thereby become a hymn of praise to the triumphant pig, its pink piglets, its well-appointed sty, and the whole world, which, like a glove to the hand, is supposedly adapted
to the bourgeois’s happiness. “Everything has been wisely created for humanity’s use!” [cf. Ps. 104:24] But the bourgeois is not always happy. Only a minority of bourgeois are happy, and even that happiness is insecure. Even someone comfortably established, if perceptive, fears for tomorrow. He fears the coming proletarian and dares to call him the coming boor. Great are the bourgeois’s fears. To triumph openly, brazenly, undisguisedly is dangerous! Will a policeman’s shout always suffice to protect him against the darkly seething Acheron of the exploited? Religion is necessary as a restraint upon the masses; for them nonresistance, asceticism, the promise of reward beyond the grave, and the threat of hell are all good. What, then, is to be done? The best way out is to believe in nothing oneself, but not to shake the foundations. And sooner or later the bourgeois may well quarrel with Rozanov. They will read him with pleasure, but why does he make so much noise? He might lead these little ones astray! [cf. Matt. 18:6; Mark 9:42; Luke 17:2] In this respect Mr. Berdyaev, Rozanov’s constant opponent, is safer. Mr. Berdyaev is not a bourgeois property owner and family man; he is a bourgeois intellectual. In his head, religious questions are refracted in a peculiar way and, for his consciousness, detached from their living social ground. Rozanov’s constructions frighten him doubly, as an intellectual and as a bourgeois. As an intellectual living outside a direct connection with society’s economic fabric, outside the “business” to which bourgeois cling, he is frightened by the bourgeois impersonality of Rozanov’s ideals. The businessman lives without digging into himself, thinks about business rather than death, often values the firm more highly than life itself, and regards his children as his natural continuators. The bourgeois intellectual detached from life, by contrast, lives on the juices of his brain. He cultivates thought, his own thoughts and feelings, his personality; the family is for the most part a hindrance to him. The question of death stands constantly before him, first because he is accustomed to thinking more than living, and second because his unique “I” is infinitely dear to him. From his moods and desires, at the slightest weakening of the critical centers, which are strong only in intellectuals closest to rigorous, exact science and technology, there arises some metaphysical system guaranteeing him personal immortality, ranging from the mind-bending intricacies of supposedly critical Kantianism to the crude invitation of some Merezhkovsky to believe in the Risen Christ. Thus Berdyaev, as an individualist, fears the impersonal, elemental, mass bourgeois who, with Rozanov, seeks self-affirmation and an idealization of his family and lineage. But Berdyaev also fears Rozanov as a bourgeois. More precisely, he fears for Rozanov. Having cast aside mysticism and set foot on real ground, a bourgeois who happens to possess a good head and a generous heart may be unable to remain in the bourgeois camp. Indeed, can a human being, rather than a half-pig, simply accept the world? It is impossible, especially for broad strata of suffering people of all classes. There is much evil in the world, particularly in the social world. One cannot long remain in Rozanov’s position: everything that affirms the world is good; everything that denies it is evil. That is untrue. The world requires purification and reconstruction; this is obvious to everyone except a handful of stupidly conservative, brazenly selfish people. It will become necessary to analyze where in the world are the forces leading to the genuine, ever brighter and broader triumph of a fuller, creative life illuminated by an ideal, and where are the forces holding back the progress of the human race. And Berdyaev prophetically warns Rozanov: “You may easily arrive at the religion of socialism, which is already taking shape!” The bourgeois will not remain deaf to this warning. Berdyaev himself, likewise seeking to save his individualistic mysticism, asks Rozanov the same
question: do you accept everything in the world? But for him, of course, the world divides differently into good and evil than it does for the socialist. In the world there is the eternal, the souls of enlightened individuals, and there is the transient, everything fleshly, the entire economic dimension of life with all its progress. Let us not dwell on the flourishes with which Berdyaev embellishes this theme. Its meaning is clear: the summit of the world, reaching toward heaven, is the mystical intelligentsia, Berdyaev and his friends. If people of every station wish to be saved, let them read and revere the Berdyaevs, for Christ is with them, and by the power of thought and feeling, with God’s help, they will lead the world to the immeasurable happiness of union with the deity. Through their prayers a cosmic transformation will one day take place, after which will come the joy and revelry of disembodied sensuality and other such delights. You see that, for the bourgeoisie, Berdyaev’s high-flown, aristocratic, individualistic mysticism is safer than pantheism and the vindication of the flesh in Rozanov’s manner. The liberalism of the enlightened bourgeois Rozanov can scarcely still be called Christian, while Berdyaev’s Christian Octobrism hardly deserves the name of liberalism. One is almost an anti-Christian, the other almost a reactionary.[Author’s note] Liberalism and Christianity do not get along well together. Author’s note: After the publication of the notorious collection Vekhi and Berdyaev’s open letter to Antony of Volhynia, hardly anyone will dispute my opinion of Berdyaev and his associates.
