The Woman Question

Translated by Alexander Bakshy (1915), modernised by S. Alexander Laurent

It holds no minor place among the many “questions” with which we are preparing to enter the twentieth century. Just as love, in the opinion of one theology student, is divided into sincere and insincere, so all questions in general are divided into serious and idle. We must recognize as serious those behind which lies some actual fact, some change that has taken place in people's lives or consciousness, a change of more or less general and therefore social significance. The woman question must be recognized as serious, because such a change lies behind it. Many women and young women have ceased to be satisfied with family life and have lost the ability to sit quietly at home attending to household affairs. The restlessness of spirit that has taken hold of them often expresses itself in pitiful and comical ways, but it exists and is growing, and no amount of argument or ridicule will dispose of it. Indeed, what can we say in reply to a human being who tells us, “Such a life does not satisfy me; it is not enough for me. I do not want to be merely a means for giving birth to and raising other beings. I also want to live for myself, with a purpose of my own”? What that purpose might consist in, what these women actually want, is entirely unclear to the women themselves. It is clear only that they no longer want what they had before and have parted with it forever.

Woman's role in history corresponds entirely to her physiological role. She cannot conceive new life by herself, but life conceived by another or through another she carries and brings into God's daylight; without her participation nothing would happen in the world. This is as true of spiritual life and the ideas that govern it as it is of physical life. To fulfill her role successfully in the common history of humanity, woman possesses two opposite characteristic qualities, combining conservatism with changeability. The observation of folk wisdom, “A woman is a sack: whatever you put in, she carries,” necessarily finds its complement in universal experience: “Women hunger for novelty; settled peace frightens them.”

In periods when the vital ideas once carried, born, and nurtured by women still hold sway over humanity and give meaning to its existence, when humanity still needs them, women, satisfied with their historical work, display social conservatism above all. They satisfy their “thirst for novelty” only in private ways, indulging in new fashions and personal infatuations of amorous passion. But in periods when the old forms of life's principles are used up and exhausted, and a transition to new conceptions of ideas is required, women experience dissatisfaction with the traditional confines of life and a desire to leave them behind and meet what is new and coming, if not earlier than men, then more strongly and decisively. Before they find what is true, they eagerly seize upon everything that presents itself. Thus Mary Magdalene, before finding Christ, passed through the power of seven demons. Could we not arrive at that same number for the false ideas that have possessed the modern woman, some simultaneously and some by turns? Indeed, there are seven: the demon of “free love,” the demon of political agitation, the demon of deified natural science, the demon of outward “simplification,” the demon of compulsory celibacy, the demon of “economic materialism,” and the demon of aesthetic decadence.

All these demons can deceive and torment, but they cannot give real satisfaction, and still less to a woman's soul than to a man's. True satisfaction can come only from the one truth, which cannot belong to today or tomorrow: it is eternal. The point, however, is that a person's inward apprehension of eternal truth outgrows its own temporary forms of expression and action. To expect an entirely new, unheard-of word is, of course, a childish illusion. The one word of truth has been spoken, and we shall hear no other, because no other exists or can exist. It is not that word which has grown old, but our understanding of it. A new way of understanding, assimilating, and realizing the eternal word of truth is always possible, and is now becoming necessary. The turmoil of woman's soul is a clear sign of this need and of its approaching fulfillment. The solution to the woman question, as to all other serious questions, lies in Christianity understood, made meaningful, and brought to life. Women were the first to rise to meet the risen Christ. The meaning of the present women's movement, once delivered from its seven demons, is to prepare new women bearing myrrh for the coming resurrection of all Christianity.

The Eastern Question

By general recognition, the practical solution of this fateful question is being postponed for an indefinite time, long enough, in any case, for calm reflection.

In modern history this question, inherited from the most ancient times, took definite shape with the transformation of Greek Constantinople into Turkish Istanbul, four hundred and forty-four years ago . Was this destruction of the Eastern Roman Empire and the enslavement by Islam of the entire Greco-Slavic world on the Balkan Peninsula a meaningless accident? Christian contemporaries of the catastrophe, stunned and crushed by it, nevertheless found a justification for it: in the triumph of the hostile kingdom of the Hagarenes they saw God's punishment for the sins of Christians. Expressed with childlike naivety, this view is, in essence, profoundly right. The issue, of course, is not individual sins, of which there have always been enough everywhere, but a collective, historical sin. Upon this sin, and this alone, depended and still depend the fate of Constantinople and, with it, the solution of the Eastern Question, which is essentially a religious and political question.

Having overcome the last serious departure from Christian truth in the field of dogma, iconoclasm, Byzantium held firmly to the letter of orthodoxy; we shall not deny its merits in this respect. But in sacredly preserving the letter that kills, the Byzantines unquestionably forgot more and more about the spirit that gives life. This spirit disappeared from public life, and despite every individual effort, its loss led the collective organism of the empire into complete paralysis. Of peoples and kingdoms, as of individuals, the Christian spirit demands, first of all, dissatisfaction with oneself and a striving for perfection. Without this neither the actual preservation nor the improvement of life is possible. Yet Byzantine society, despite all the calamities it had endured, remained unchangingly self-satisfied and contemptuous of everything foreign, without any self-criticism or any effort to bring its actual social order into harmony with the higher ideal of goodness that it accepted verbally in abstract discussions.

But was the Western world more Christian than the Eastern? Certainly not, if we mean the ideal already attained; and certainly yes, if we look at living aspiration and actual movement toward what is better. With all the historical shortcomings of medieval Christianity in the West, it maintained an active religion. And when, in the fifteenth century, the Church's stern tutelage over peoples who had come of age began to draw to an end, these peoples came forward with the full measure of their spiritual powers and aspirations. The treasures of ancient Hellenic culture, which the Byzantine Greeks had kept unused, as in a miser's chest, passed into the hands of Western Europeans and powerfully advanced the great “Renaissance” of the arts and sciences, of which the Byzantine Greeks had never even dreamed. The Italian and German “humanists of the first generation,” sincerely devout men, made it their task to use the finest fruits of pagan culture to adorn and strengthen Christianity. Alongside this arose an untiring effort to extend the outward boundaries of the Christian world, until European enterprise had encompassed the entire globe. Finally, there was a third great movement in the Western world, pure in its sources although it strayed into every possible error: the movement to transform and regenerate the Church itself.

Whatever our view of the Western world at the beginning of modern history, it presented, in any case, the direct opposite of the decline of powers and paralysis of spirit from which the Christian East of that time suffered. The sources of life were then indisputably in the West. Our own homeland, having first taken from Byzantium everything it could bequeath to us, also had to come to those sources.

Meanwhile, from the eighteenth century onward, the historical one-sidedness of the West began to become apparent in Europe and then still more in America. Its active and enterprising character began to take an increasingly external and superficial direction. The heroic striving for great deeds began to turn into restless mobility; the affirmation of the human person, with its infinite aspirations and rights, began to turn into a denial of what is higher than the human person. Humanism, growing at the expense of piety, was itself absorbed by naturalism. The human principle, separated from the divine, lost the higher meaning of life and, despite all its formal gains, proved powerless in substance and fell into “bondage to futility, to the weak and beggarly elements of the world.”

This is the direct opposite of what destroyed Byzantium. In the West, God is increasingly forgotten, just as in Byzantium the human being was forgotten. In practice they forgot the essence of Christianity which they so zealously defended in words: that in Christ perfect God is inseparably and essentially united with perfect man, with whom, consequently, everything human in our life, both personal and collective, can and must be connected. By separating God absolutely from humanity, Islam did openly and honestly, as a matter of principle, what Byzantinism did secretly and falsely, in contradiction to its own profession of faith. On the ground of the error they shared, the Muslims were more in the right, and therefore stronger, than the Byzantines. They were bound to overcome them, because history has an inner logic and a moral meaning.

Yet for that very reason, people whose error is whole and consistent, though they justly overcome people divided between true words and a false life, cannot triumph in the end. The one-sidedness of the motionless East must reveal its inadequacy just as surely as the one-sided movement of the West. Indeed, in the very same eighteenth century when the first signs of inward spiritual impoverishment began to be noticeable in the West, the outward power of the Muslim state also began to falter. But who will stand when both historical powers fall? Who will abolish both one-sidednesses by bringing the whole truth to life? Is there a world power that could, through a genuine union, unite in historical life the divine principle with the human, piety with education, religion with humanism, the truth of the East with the truth of the West, and in the name of this whole truth say to the paralyzed Greco-Slavic world, “Rise and walk!”?
